STRICT LOCKDOWN: ‘ROADS NOT ESSENTIAL’
Potholes a problem TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
T
he call for potholes to be repaired has been an ongoing cry for residents of Goodwood. With recent heavy rains, the number of potholes has since increased. Problem streets include Alice Street, Beaufort Street, Cambridge Street, Essenhout Road, Frangipani Road, Hamilton Street, Louis Trichardt, Orchid Road, Townsend Street, Van Rensburg Road and Victoria Street. Resident James Ellis says the issue of pot-
holes has been an ongoing problem. “Goodwood is now at a high speed approaching competition with areas like Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Witbank and surrounds when it comes to the terrible state of our roads,” Ellis says. “This topic has now become a huge problem and has been going on for years with a long history, raised with the relevant departments, but with no successes reached. The condition of these roads are terrible, filled with potholes and even getting bigger by the day. “The so-called repairs done are temporary and within a day or two, we are back to nor-
mal. My opinion is that there’s no checking and control, no quality check after a job has been done, but signed off.” Leona van Wyk also says damage to vehicles is a concern. “We damage our vehicles when we drive through these potholes and it costs us a lot of money.” The City’s portfolio chair for transport, Angus McKenzie, says during the period of 1 July 2019 to 26 March this year, the City’s transport directorate attended to 17 415 potholes across the city at a cost of over R43m. “When alert level 5 lockdown came into effect from 27 March, roads and stormwater
services were not considered essential services according to national regulations. This resulted in the roads and stormwater depots reducing their workforce to only a small complement to attend to emergencies. “The timing of the lockdown further meant that depots could not conclude the Winter Readiness programme, which is vital in preparing for the rainy season. Water ingress is one of the key contributors to the formation of potholes and the Winter Readiness programme focuses on clearing blockages or potential blockages in time for the winter rains.
