A

vacant house at 24 Beaufort Street in Goodwood, is becoming a concern for residents as they fear that suspicious activity is taking place there.

The owner of the house apparently died about seven years ago and it is now the property of the national department of public works.

Since his death, neighbours have noticed constant movement in and out the house by vagrants. Resident Angela Bailey says her biggest concern is that so many elderly people live in the road.

“We’ve been living here for about seven years. Since then this has been a problem.

In the middle of the night, one would hear

banging at the house or people arguing.

“It’s suspected that in this time, the house which seems to be accommodated by vagrants, was also housing prostitutes.

There’s always activity at the house even though it belongs to the department of public works,” says Bailey.

Throughout the years, Bailey says she contacted the local councillor Cecile Janse van Rensberg, the department of public works and the Goodwood police.

“In the period of 2016/2017, Councillor Janse van Rensburg arranged among others clean-ups, but then things went quiet. When I contact the police but they are not able to do anything about it and I’ve tried communicating with the department of public works on several occasions.

main anonymous, reveals that her business has been broken into several times: “In all honesty, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the vagrants occupying the vacant house who had broken into our business.

Janse van Rensburg says the property does indeed belong to the national department of public works.

“The previous owner passed away and bequeathed the property to the police. As such, DPW became the custodian of the property.”

She confirms that residents have come forward to complain about the house.

“Following the complaints, the City has intervened and has been liaising with DPW on a regular basis to convey the sentiments of the residents and to establish what the future plans with the property are.”

TygerBurger contacted the national department of public works for comment, but had not received a response at the time of print.

dog owner from Monte Vista claims he had to fork out close to R7 000 in veterinary bills after his Jack Russelcross was attacked by an American pitbull.

The incident occurred on Friday 11 October at a public park opposite Monte Vista Primary School.

Fabiola Marques (46) and her partner, Johan Liebenberg (53), took their little dog, Winston, for his routine exercise walk when they noticed another dog owner and his pet across the field.

“Our recollection of the event is not 100% because we were too traumatised. We were walking from our place to the field opposite the school where we train our dog when we saw the other dog owner enter the park with his dog on a leash.

“They took the leash off and it began to run towards Johan,” Fabiola remembers.

Johan picked up the couple’s dog.

“It jumped on top of him and he fell down,” Fabiola told TygerBurger.

The incident was also caught on CCTV footage.

Vic Barra, chair of the Monte Vista and Plattekloof Glen neighbourhood watch, confirmed this.

“We are aware of this dog attack incident, but I am afraid I cannot assist you as I have explained to Johan on numerous occasions that the only people we will allow to view this footage are the law enforcement officials that should become involved in this case,” Barra told the newspaper.

According to Johan, who saw the video, the owners of the pitbull saw them and let their dog off its leash.

“I remember seeing him coming. Fabiola tried to block the dog. I also kicked him off me,” Johan remembers.

They said they fear for the safety of their pet and they will not visit the park again soon.

Dylan Williams, the owner of the pitbull, Zeus, says he too will avoid the park.

According to him he regularly takes his dog for walks at the park. He, however, denies that he encouraged his animal to attack Winston and that he also tried to stop the scuffle. “Why would I encourage the dog to it?” Dylan asks.

“We took a walk and this is a park where we always go. He (Zeus) grew up at this park.

“I took my dog off-leash because he is a friendly dog,” he says.

He says on most days there are five or six other dogs at the park.

“When he sees other dogs he wants to go and greet them. He saw their dog and ran across the field.

“They got scared and they picked up their dog and started kicking my dog. The guy fell down,” Dylan explains.

He says that pepper-spray was used to ward off his dog and that his dog’s eyes were bloodshot as a result. This was confirmed by Johan who explained that he actually emptied out his pepper-spray can. “It did not help,” he says.

Dylan says he grabbed hold of his dog.

He says he is aware of the vet bill and that he indicated to Johan that he is willing to pay a portion of it. Winston sustained injuries to his tail, back, neck and the corner of his eye.

“I emailed them and I am still waiting on their response.”

Johan says apart from the vet bill he and Fabiola also had to settle some medical bills

Dylan says the only blood he noticed came from their hands.

According to Johan, he had to receive five stitches. He says according to an eyewitness this is not the first time the pitbull had attacked another dog. Dylan, however, denies

this claim.

Johan and Fabiola also made contact with the local ward councillor and SPCA to see whether they can intervene.

Johan and Fabiola opened a case at the Goodwood police station. TygerBurger contacted the station, but is still awaiting a response.

“Met ’n algemene toename in die aantal kuberaanvalle op beide individue en organisasies moet ons meer as net bewustheid skep; ons moet ook dringend daaraan werk om beter en veiliger sagtewarestelsels te skep, terwyl ons regstelsel ook opgeknap moet word – alles goed wat nie maklike uitdagings is nie,” meen hy.

Met Oktober wat Kubersekerheidsmaand is, word al hoe meer mense en organisasies aangemoedig om stappe te doen om hulself teen die wandade van kubermisdadigers in die kuberruimte te beskerm.

“Dit is krities, gegewe die huidige toename in strikroofpogings, wat ’n bedrieglike praktyk is om vals e-posse te stuur wat lyk of dit van ’n geldige, erkende maatskappy of departement gestuur is ten einde individue uit te lok om persoonlike inligting soos wagwoorde of kredietkaartnommers te verskaf, of om swendelary te pleeg,” sê hy.

“Indien ’n organisasie se stelsels nie voldoende beskermd is nie, is hulle kwesbaar vir aanvalle deur kubermisdadigers wat hulself as banke of regeringsdepartemente voordoen om niksvermoedende, wetsgehoorsame burgers en sake-inligting bloot te stel en uit te buit.”

Volgens Watson is dit hoofsaaklik die private sektor wat kampvegters vir inisiatiewe is om kubersekerheidsbewustheid te skep, terwyl die Suid-Afrikaanse regering nog ver agter is.

“Sodoende sal net iemand wat bewus is van kubersekerheid kan help om die ga-

pings binne die regering wat betref die hantering van kwessies van kubersekerheid bloot te lê. Namate tegnologie ontwikkel, sal meer en meer mense op dienste aandring wat van die regering verwag om hulle teen kuberaanvalle te beskerm.”

Watson erken dat kubersekerheid ’n moeilike saak is en daar is verskeie redes hiervoor. “Eerstens kom die kuberruimte nie die gewone reëls van die wêreld na nie.

Daarom is dit nie genoeg om ‘in ’n goeie buurt te woon’ ten einde teen ’n kuberaanval bestand te wees nie. Alles word al hoe meer met mekaar verbind en ons kan per ongeluk en oor ’n lang afstand ’n kuberaanval beleef. Dit is ook maklik om anoniem op die internet te wees, wat toerekening bemoeilik. Ideaal gesproke is hierdie misdadige aktiwiteite wat by die owerhede aangemeld en ingevolge ’n betrokke wet vervolg moet word. Ons moet ten minste in staat wees om die toepaslike wette wat oortree is, uit te ken en dan bewus te wees van die prosesse wat ons moet volg om die misdadigers aan die pen te laat ry.”

Watson sê Suid-Afrika het egter tans nie veel hiervan nie. Hy wys daarop dat die enigste regsdokument wat tans hieroor handel, die nasionale beleidsraamwerk vir kubersekerheid is, wat in 2012 deur die kabinet goedgekeur is.

“Ons het ook die Wetsontwerp op Kubermisdade, wat tot laat in 2018 as die Wetsontwerp op Kubermisdaad en Kubersekerheid bekend gestaan het, maar totdat dit onderteken is en as wet bekragtig word, kan nie veel gedoen word om hierdie kwessies aan te pak nie.”

Daarom is dit baie belangrik dat ons ons kubersekerheidsverdediging verskerp, sê Watson.

Goodwood police say the swift reaction from a woman and her family secured the arrest of three men for theft out of motor vehicle.

According to Capt Wayne Theunis, a woman heard a noise at her vehicle in the early hours of Monday 21 October.

“She looked through a window and saw three suspects. Two were inside the vehicle and the third was keeping watch. The

complainant woke up her husband and son who ran out and arrested the two inside the vehicle.

“The third fled on foot, but they managed to apprehend him and the stolen goods from the vehicle were recovered,” said Theunis.

The suspects aged 29, 31 and 33 appeared in the Goodwood magistrate’s court on a charge of theft out of motor vehicle.

More firefighters to fight summer fires A

n additional 51 firefighters will be battling out blazes this coming summer season.

The firefighters recently completed an eight-month training course after making it through the 2018 recruitment process, according to a statement by the City.

“Firefighters must undergo hours of training and prove their proficiency, which is by no means easy. Our new firefighters can be very proud of their achievements and for joining the fire and rescue service,” said Mayco member for

safety and security, JP Smith, who delivered the keynote address at the graduation ceremony in Epping on Friday 25 October.

The new firefighters were presented with their rank and badge, with the former pinned to the corners of their shirt collars and the badge above the left shirt pocket.

“They are now permanent members of staff and will be deployed to various fire stations across the metropole,” the statement reads.

Tygerberg Talent Competition showcased a variety of talents.

Showing off talent The annual seventh Tygerberg’s Talent 2019 Finals and Festival Day took place at N1 City Mall on Saturday 19 October.

A trio singing group, Hot Notes, was the winner of the competition. The group consists of Ronaldo Moses (22), Breyton Appolis (19) and Lezalin Dirkse (17) who are all from Kraaifontein.

Kirwan Daniels (aka Sir Kir), a 22-yearold aspiring rap artist from Matroosfontein claimed second place while in third place was a dance group from Uitsig called Tenacity Movement.

The Open Mic winner was Selwin Romeo Bok (22) from Kuils River.

The talent competition is one of the events under the Tygerberg Heritage Festi-

val. The festival is an innovative partnership project organised annually by Bold Moves Kemi Adebayo, chief executive officer of Bold Moves said, “We are extremely grateful and indebted to N1 City Mall for accommodating us again this year and going the extra mile in making sure we had a fantastic and well-organised event. The finalists and open mic contestants were very appreciative of wide range of vouchers donated by the N1 City Mall clients who supported the event. The positive and encouraging feedback from the audience in need for more of these events showcasing grassroot talents has motivated the organisers to do more for 2020.”

osing her child did not discourage her from fighting diabetes, and so, Anthea Usher from Goodwood is planning a memorial walk to raise awareness about the illness. The Caylee Usher Memorial Walk will take place at The Jack Muller Danie Uys Park in Bellville on Saturday 23 November from 10:00.

Anthea comes from a diabetic family, and she lost the battle to save her daughter, Caylee, last year, six years after the diagnosis.

The walk is named after Caylee because Anthea drew strength to raise awareness of the illness, one year after losing her 18-yearold daughter last year. Caylee, who had type one diabetes, contracted a deadly virus after six years of battling the chronic illness, injecting herself four times a day and sticking to a healthy diet.

Anthea says over the years she realised that not much support was given to patients or families living with diabetes and there was little knowledge about type one diabetes in youth. The walk is not just aimed at remembering Caylee, but to show support to those affected as well as to educate the public about diabetes in youth.

Anthea says this needs to be given a lot of attention in communities, workplaces and at schools.

“Educators need to know what to do if they have type one learners in their schools.

They need to know and understand the challenges that these children face every day of their lives. For example, understanding they may need to use the bathroom more frequently than others, to keep a snack handy in case their glucose levels drop, that they need to test and inject at different periods during the day and more,” she explains.

She says most diabetes related awareness initiatives are institutionalised and reach few people even though it affects many people in the communities.

Direct flights from New York to boost local economy DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke The much anticipated first direct flight from New York City to Cape Town is scheduled to arrive at Cape Town International Airport on 16 December.

James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities, is eagerly awaiting this milestone.

The same United Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamline that seats 252 passengers (48 business class) will be used for the three times a week service.

Tickets went on sale in May, from around $1 000, according to the airline’s website.

The website states that the 12 500km flight across the Atlantic will take about 14,5 hours, cutting current travel time by at least

four hours.

Vos says this achievement was made possible by the City’s participation in the Air Access programme.

“As a result, we as a City will be able to leverage our partnerships with New York and United Airlines to grow the US market.”

According to Vos, estimates show that 24 000 additional inbound passengers created by this new route will create 900 more jobs in the first year and some R421 million to boost the local economy.

“We need to challenge our thinking and adjust our plans regularly to ensure that they keep pace with the changing trade needs,” he says.

In addition, upgrades at the airport will increase its landings and departures to 45 aircraft per day, Vos adds.

The GrandWest Bursary Fund, established in 2007, is earmarked for young people from communities who were previously excluded from all social economic developments, and who want to improve their livelihoods and communities.

Genevieve Smith, sustainability manager at GrandWest, says the GrandWest’s bursary fund does not only target high academic achievers, but also considers student’s sheer will and determination to succeed despite life’s significant challenges.

The bursary, which does not have to be paid back, provides financial assistance to

tertiary students who matriculated in South Africa, are enrolled in full-time studies, and who live and study in the Western Cape.

Successful student applicants can expect the bursary fund to cover 75% to 100% of their tuition fee, with no payback. There is also a textbook allowance, ongoing academic support and mentoring and a job market preparation workshop. “Students who received the bursary will also need to do 40 hours of community service,” says Smith.

The process of selection is to submit an application form, this will be followed by a screening of applicants, shortlisting of candidates and then the final selection.

he statues of struggle stalwarts and freedom fighters, including the late Nelson Mandela, former South African president, will soon be on display at Century City.

The statue of the liberation leader, along with that of Oliver Tambo and Walter Sisulu and many others, will be moved from the Maropeng Visitor Centre in the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng to Century City. The Long March to Freedom exhibition, which currently consists of 100 figures that will grow into a procession of more than 400 bronze statues over time, is also known as the world’s largest representational collection of bronzes.

Individuals who struggled against oppression in South Africa from the early 1700s to Freedom Day in April 1994, will be honoured in the exhibition.

Can alcohol affect mental health?

A

lcohol and substance abuse can be a contributing factor to the onset of a mental health disorder due to the disruption in the neural pathways.

This is according to Claro Addiction Treatment Clinic psychiatrist, Dr Chanakya Jonnolagadda.

With mental health awareness month (October) coming to an end tomorrow, Jonnolagadda and the clinic’s programme manager Annalie Nienaber offers advice on how alcohol and substance abuse can lead to a mental health disorder.

Starting with the basics, Nienaber shares the warning signs of mental health.

“Mental health risk is usually accompanied by a change in a person’s level of functioning which includes a change in personality and behaviour, uncharacteristic anxiety, anger, depressed mood or mood swings, social withdrawal and isolation. Other changes include lack of self-care or risky behaviour, a sense of hopelessness or feeling overwhelmed, increased use of alcohol and substances which are often accompanied by planning around substance use activities, neglecting previous interests, education or work or family involvement and change in sleeping patterns,” she explains.

Jonnolagadda states that alcohol can have a severe depressant effect: “This is due to interferences with the dopamine reward pathway in the brain which can lead to the possible onset of a mood or anxiety disorder.

Should the person already be on an antidepressant for an underlined depressant or anxiety disorder, it will interact against these medications and be unable to bring about an improvement and continually make mental health worse.

“Alcohol and substance abuse can also lead to the onset of a mental health disorder due to the disruption in the neural pathways. In

our clinics, we often see the presence of a substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorder in up to 70% to 80% of patients. The latter, therefore, indicates the importance of dual-diagnosis treatment,” he says.

The amount of damage that alcohol can cause to the brain, Jonnolagadda says, is dependent on several factors including the amount of alcohol drunk, the age and gender of the person, how long the person has been drinking and the effect of alcohol on the unborn child.

Nienaber says people who are drinking heavily are at a much higher risk of traumatic brain injury due to more risky behaviour including increased risk of motor vehicle accidents, assault, and falls. “Binge drinking can cause problems like very high consumption of alcohol that can result in blackouts, and memory lapses. Excessive alcohol consumption can have long-lasting consequences on neurotransmitters within the brain, adversely affecting their functioning in brain circuits. Alcohol also destroys brain cells and contracts brain tissue.”

The relationship between alcohol and one’s mood has been described as “complicated”.

“Some people who are depressed use alcohol to try to feel better as alcohol can have a numbing effect on the low mood. However, in the long term, the use of alcohol can result in worsening depression due to a substanceinduced mood disorder. In addition, as a person who is drinking excessively can act in impulsive and reckless ways with negative consequences to that person, the prolonged use of alcohol can result in negative life events that can result in and worsen episodes of depression,” says Nienaber.

Alcohol often relieves anxiety in the short term. However, long-term use of alcohol worsens anxiety symptoms. “A person often drinks more to feel better, further worsening anxiety symptoms over time,” says Nienaber.

Bokke verskaf blydskap en depressie Daar is min dinge in die lewe wat met my emosies kan smokkel soos rugby.

Sedert ek as ’n laaitie die eerste keer gesien het hoe twee stelle van vyftien ouens met die ovaalbal jol, was ek, soos die Engelsman sê, hooked. Niks het my meer plesier verskaf as om middae ná skool met ’n selfvervaardigde rugbybal die oop vlaktes van my tuisdorp aan te durf nie. Vele dae moes ek ook die skel van my ouers verduur oor ’n geskeerde kledingstuk of die soveelste nerfaf knie.

Ons het ons eie spanne saamgeflans en ook op “toer” gegaan. Omdat ons naby die winkels gebly het, was ons span die Dorp. Die rugbytoere het ons dan geneem na plekke soos Nuwedorp, Bostraat, Gaatjie en Plaatjie. Hierdie wedstryde het baie keer in vuisgevegte geëindig, maar elke jaar is daar “getoer”.

My oudste broer het ’n plakboek gehad van al sy Westelike Provinsie- en Springbokhelde. Elke koerant en Huisgenoot is gefynkam vir foto’s van sy helde. Hy was heilig op daardie boek en wanneer ek skelm daardeur kon blaai het ek my verkyk aan ouens soos Faffa Knoetze en Carel du Plessis, Calla Scholtz en Danie Gerber.

En ek het gedroom om eendag die groen-en-goud aan trek.

Alles het by my om rugby gedraai. In my drome het ek oor Nuweland se groen gras gedartel en gesystap, geswenk en skêrbewegings gedoen, voor ek dan sierlik oor die doellyn geduik het. Die Nuwelandse skare het my naam gedreunsing, tot ek besef het dis my ma wat my naam roep om my vir skool wakker te maak.

Toe ek dertien was, is ek vir die Cravenweekspan gekies – die eerste ou uit my skool wat hierdie eer te beurt geval het. Voor my was daar baie goeie spelers wat vir die skoolspan gespeel het – ouens na wie ek opgesien het. Dus was dit vir my snaaks dat ek dan die eerste speler in die skool se geskiedenis was wat Cravenweek toe is.

Hoekom? wou ek by my afrigter weet.

Hy het my laat sit en verduidelik.

“Spelers van kleur mag nooit Cravenweek gespeel het nie. Kyk na die spelers op die televisie. Sien jy ’n bruin- of swartman?”

Ek is terug huis toe met ’n swaar hart en vra toe vir my broer om, onder sy toesig, weer deur sy plakboek te blaai.

Waar Faffa en Calla en Danie en Carel in die verlede net vir my bleddie goeie rugbyspelers was, was hulle nou wit rugbyspelers. My kinderlike onskuld is verwoes en ek moes begin aanvaar dat ’n bruin laaitie van Nababeep dalk nooit eendag vir die Bokke sou kon speel nie.

Maar dinge het begin verander. Hier en daar het spelers van kleur deurgekom en bewys dat as hulle die geleenthede kry, hulle net so goed kan wees. Ek natuurlik was net nooit só goed as wat ek in my drome was nie en het gou genoeg besef Springbokkleure is my nie beskore nie.

Maar die liefde vir my land en die Springbokke is onveranderd.

As ek Springbokwedstryde kyk, kan ek binne sekondes van ekstase na algehele depressie oorslaan. ’n Willie le Roux-aanslaan en nog ’n Faf de Klerk-skoppie jaag die bloeddruk op, maar ’n RG Snymanaangee en ’n Beast-skrum laat my uitbundig skree.

Alles is nie wel in hierdie droewige land van ons nie, maar dit gaan goed met ons rugby. Die Bokke het vanjaar nog net een keer verloor. Hulle speel Saterdag in ’n wêreldbeker-eindstryd en na my mening is daar nie een speler in die span wat vir iets anders as sy vaardighede gekies is nie. Ons land het ver gekom. En ons gaan wen die naweek.

Import tax too high I recently ordered a piece of clothing from Spain. I was shocked when it arrived, and I had to pay an amount of about 80% of the value of the article before it would be released to me.

This practically makes it impossible to buy anything from overseas as it is simply too expensive.

Yesterday I went to a big complex with many shops in Milnerton, selling anything from suitcases to clothes and plastic goodies. I guess most, if not all, of these items are brought in from China.

The million-dollar question is whether any import duties are paid and if not, why the discrimination against South African citizens while people can come from another country, set up shop and get a different set of rules?

I mean, many South African businesses would love to import stuff from overseas to sell here but they are penalised with outrageous taxes. Another thing I noticed the previous time I bought something there, was the lack of any receipt, which means they probably do not have to pay any taxes either. So again, why are South African businesses penalised while foreigners get a different set of rules?

How is it then that Dr Jacques de Vos is facing spurious charges of unprofessional conduct after giving a woman scientific facts about her unborn child – and thus, he has been barred from practicing medicine for over two years? When we are in desperate need as a nation for the medical skills and services of such a doctor, the Health Professions Council of SA has time to play political games bent on censoring freedom of pro-life speech, withdrawing and then reinstating charges, not providing the prescribed information for his defence, to the good doctor, all at a great loss to our suffering people.

Of jy kan wag vir die munisipaliteit om niks daaraan te doen nie, met die gevolg dat dit nie baie netjies sal lyk as jy in die straat gaan stap vir ontspanning, soos wat ek doen nie.

Volg die goue reël: stap in die rigting van aankomende verkeer.

FRIKKIE POOL Welgelegen

Klakouse mag oor my klippies loop Jare gelede het ek vermoed dat Kaapstad se waterbronne nie volhoubaar sou wees om aan die groeiende vraag te voldoen nie.

My huis is op ’n hoek geleë en al die sypaadjies, asook dele van my erf, was met gras bedek. My waterverbruik was ongeveer 20 kl per maand.

Die grasperke van ongeveer 400 m² is verwyder en met fyn klippies en plaveisel vervang.

Tans is my waterverbruik ongeveer 3 kl per maand.

Die besparing op water- en rioolkoste oor die jare het die koste van klippies en plaveisel gedelg.

Verder hoef ek nie groot grasperke en rante te sny nie en my eiendom vertoon esteties beter.

Ongelukkig is daar onder die stappers en drawwers party mammas en pappas wat dink dit is te “cute” as hul spruite handevol klippies optel en in die straat gooi, sonder om te dink wie moet agterna skoonmaak. Selfs van die ouer skoolkinders doen dieselfde.

So vir die “klipsypaadjieklakouse”, hou op kerm oor klipsypaadjies.

Loop gerus oor myne sonder om die klippies doelbewus deurmekaar te skop of in die straat te gooi.

Daar word oorgenoeg papiere, bottels, koeldrankblikke en selfs gebruikte babaweggooidoeke op sypaadjies neergegooi deur diegene en ongewenste rondlopers wat ander se handewerk en eiendom nie respekteer nie.

Geniet die mooi tuine wat baie huiseienaars op hul persele en sommige sypaadjies aangebring het.

Om te wag dat die munisipaliteit die sypaadjies en strate gereeld netjies en skoon sal hou, is wensdenkery.

Waar is die ‘toesighouers’?

Ek het vandag die briewe in die TygerBurger van 16 Oktober sorgvuldig gelees – “Moeg om vir ander te betaal”, “Te veel werkers wat slaap, niks doen”, “Gras gesny, maar morsig gedoen” en “Kom ons inwoners betaal minder ...”, en ek stem volmondig saam.

Daar is baie van ons vredeliewende belastingbetalers wat ons nooit bemoei met die politiek nie, maar genoeg is genoeg.

Eerstens was daar, as ek reg onthou, verlede week ’n relaas oor die parkedienste.

Dit gaan my verstand te bowe dat ’n amptenaar sê dit neem baie tyd om tenders goed te keur. My liewe land, julle weet mos wanneer die tenders ten einde loop, begin dus vroeg genoeg.

Kry kontrakteurs wat weet wat gedoen moet word om die werk ordentlik te doen. Geen wonder hierdie land se produktiwiteit is so laag nie.

Hier in Hoopenbergstraat, Perrynstraat en omgewing is die werk uiters morsig gedoen. Moet ons nou werklik tevrede wees met so ’n munisipaliteit se werk? Mense word betaal om te werk, nie te lê en slaap of gereedskap se stele af te lê nie. Waar is die munisipale amptenare wat toesig moet hou dat die werk na behore gedoen word?

Perseverance celebrates 50th A

Christmas Band with deep roots in the community is getting ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary on a high note.

The Perseverance Christmas Band was founded by the late John Frans and Johannes Moore, at the latter’s home in 39th Avenue Elsies River on 17 June 1969.

The two had left Young Guiding Stars Christmas Band the year before, and decided to start Perseverance with the motto Nehil Sed Optimus (Nothing but the Best).

On Saturday 2 November, Perseverance will host a Majestic Musical Journey at Artscape Theatre, where they will showcase their talent developed over 50 years.

Youth development has been its bedrock, and band member Keith Moore, son of the founder Johannes Moore, used to teach music after hours at his home in 39th Avenue and later in Belhar when he moved there.

“Parents started asking if we could teach their children to play an instrument and in 1996, the music development programme started.

Kevin Fisher, from Ruyterwacht, has come through the ranks – he joined in 1997 and went through the development programme with Keith Moore.

The music development programme turned 20 in 2016, and is an incubator for the band. Fisher went on to make music his career.

He will conduct part of the programme at Artscape on Saturday. Fellow bandmasters are James Hannie and Anthony Solomons.

Part of the repertoire includes “Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody”, described by Fisher as “a big piece”.

He reminds the band that this has been the song of the century, and nowadays bands are wary of taking on the full song, instead, they prefer to play a shortened version.

Perseverance is affiliated to the Western Cape and District Christmas Bands Union, which they were instrumental in establishing with the Young Royal Shepherd of Heidelberg in 2008.

Persies, as it is affectionately known, has 85 musicians – 50 of which will take part in the programme at Artscape.

Explaining their role in cultural development in Elsies River, the band said having young people in the band, keeps them out of gangs.

They also take in members from other bands for music tuition, thereby keeping the Christmas band spirit alive.

Moore said his father and Frans built Perseverance on Christian values, which they still hold on to 50 years on.

The gala event on Saturday will showcase different genres – from classics such as Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” to contemporary music of Ed Sheeran.

“We plea for support because we want to help the next needy child and we want to uplift the broken lives by adding value to their skills and talents,” said the band.

Rallycross returns A

n all-out battle to be crowned World Rallycross champion and fierce competition for a podium place will thrill spectators at Killarney International Raceway on Saturday and Sunday 9 and 10 November.

The two leaders are just one single point apart. The season finale, World Rallycross of South Africa, will see supercars accelerating faster than Formula 1s and international drivers with matching reflexes burning up the Killarney circuit of tar, dirt, straights, tight corners and airborne jumps battling for the world driver and car crown.

The world finale is brought to Cape Town’s Killarney track by IMG, The City of Cape Town and well-known SA event organiser WorldSport. Under the agreement with the City of Cape Town, the championship will also visit Cape Town in 2020 and 2021.

The top three supercar drivers are Andreas Bakkerud (Audi S1) and brothers Timmy and Kevin Hansen (Peugeot 208) with a field of 35 drivers in the chase.

The four-wheeldrive turbocharged 2 litre WRX Supercars produce 450 kW and 900 Nm of torque, catapulting the cars from zero to 100 km/h in just 1,9 seconds, faster than Formula 1s. The RX2 car category is just as hotly contested with Oliver Eriksson, Jesse Kallio and Ben-Philip Gundersen in the top three and 23 more drivers in pursuit.

Mountain bike league on the rise The Spur Schools Mountain Bike League (SSMTBL), now in its eleventh year, is growing from strength to strength reaching record proportions during the 2019 season with 18 757 riders competing in 57 events across South Africa.

According to founder and co-ordinator, Meurant Botha of Amarider, the league is achieving its goal of getting kids on bikes.

“The support of national and provincial Schools Cycling South Africa (SCSA) structures, regional co-ordinators, parents and teachers has been a key factor in the growth of the league and achieving our aim of getting kids to ride and race bikes. With the continuous involvement of Spur as founding sponsor, we have managed to grow the league from an initial 900 to nearly 19 000 riders,” says Botha.

Botha further ascribes the success of the SSMTBL to the ongoing development of new mountain biking tracks around the country in an effort to take the sport to the people with a strong focus on schools. Currently 60% of all SSMTBL events are being hosted on school grounds.

“It is important to establish good quality tracks, especially in outlying areas where travelling long distances to compete remains a problem for many kids. This was also a consideration when we decided to relocate the finals to Wagpos High School just outside of Brits this year. With the finals done and dusted, Wagpos inherits a custom built track where their riders can train and improve their skills,” states Botha.
