he property which houses Goodwood police station goes on auctioned today, 27 November.

The building at 13 Wiener Street in Vasco Estate, was built in 1956 and is zoned Single Residential 1 with a departure for public service usage.

The reserve price for the building, which the public works department has rented to the police for many years, is listed as

ing the issue. The auction will take place at Rawson Property Group’s head office on 222 Main Road in Rondebosch.

TygerBurger contacted the department for comment, but they had not responded at the time of print.

An effort was also made to obtain comment from Goodwood police spokesman Captain Waynne Theunis, but he referred us to provincial police as he could not comment on the matter. However, provincial police had also not responded at the time of print despite several attempts.

CPB stalemate ‘destabilising’ DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

stalemate between provincial government and the provincial community policing board (CPB) is threatening to destabilise local community safety structures should middle ground not be found soon.

It stems from directives issued by the department earlier this year, which changes the voting rights that were adopted by individual community policing forums (CPF) in accordance with national legislation.

This resulted in provincial police commissioner Lt Genl Sindile Mfazi to on 30 October place a moratorium on CPF annual meetings across the province, where new executives would have been voted into office for the next five-year term; this after the CPB called on the police commissioner for intervention.

Provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, last week called on Lt Genl Mfazi to lift this moratorium and allow communities to elect their leadership.

He also called on all CPFs in the province to abide by his directives and guidelines.

“These directives were issued to allow for all community based organisations including neighbourhood watches (NHW), nongovernmental organisations and the religious fraternity to participate in CPFs at the station-level,” he said in a statement.

He is of the opinion that the current Uniform Constitution for CPFs in the Western Cape, drafted in 2010, is now outdated. “(The UC) is no longer aligned with current legislation, particularly the Civilian Secretariat for Police Act and the Western Cape Community Safety Act,” he stated.

He expressed concern that this outdated constitution is being used by a few within the CPB to side-line community based organisations in terms of voting rights.

“Historically, these provisions have resulted in a lack of representation of NHWs and community structures on CPFs, in turn, causing much tension,” said Fritz.

According to Fritz the constitution is not aligned with the spirit of the Western Cape Community Safety Act, which aims to make CPFs inclusive of all community based organisations.

He added that the department’s directives were issued within the ambit of the legislative powers of the province, after much consultation and confirmation from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the national civilian secretariat for police and from the police.

Sean McCleland, chair of the Tygerberg cluster CPB, says Fritz’s statement is misleading.

“Firstly, the IEC is a political organisation and has no mandate to moderate functions or elections within a CPF. Secondly, the provincial commissioner, after consultation with the CPB, did not confirm the department directives as claimed by Fritz and thirdly, the constitution does not apply only to certain organisations or cultural structures. It applies to every safety organisation, both within government and community based within respective communities.

“Furthermore, the department is acting outside of their legal mandate in terms of the Constitution of the Republic, which clearly shows no legal mandate and no responsibility on the department to issue directives. Legally, the role of department is to promote, assist and monitor police part-

nerships,” he says.

McCleland says the constitution by which CPFs are managed, was instituted and approved of by the department, the police and CPFs at its inception and is focused on the implementation of national laws, not provincial legislation.

“Legally speaking the department cannot dictate to CPFs and the question begs as to why they forget their legal mandate.

Why are they attempting to force this onto CPFs and what is their agenda?” says McCleland. “It is causing political infighting and internal friction that is weakening community safety.”

McCleland confirmed that the CPB and the provincial police commissioner in a meeting on 16 November agreed that CPF annual meetings and elections will only proceed next year between 20 January and 28 February and will take place in terms of the constitution and not department directives.

The department was notified of this meeting, but did not show up and confirmed their refusal to attend the meeting, according to McCleland.

Fritz, on the other hand, continued to say it was unfortunate “that the functionality of all 151 CPFs in the Western Cape is now compromised because of a dysfunctional few”.

In reply to Fritz, McCleland said, “it is because of the attempts by the department to dictate to CPFs that this very problem has occurred, even although the department is admittedly way outside of its legal mandate”. Tygerberg cluster, under the assessment of the department was found to be one of the most functional in the province with the highest in submissions and compliance with the department strategy.

Art ceramics celebrated at market Art ceramics was celebrated at the annual curated ceramics market at Rust-en-Vrede in Durbanville on Saturday 16 November.

A total of 30 curated stalls showcased quality work. Among the exhibitions was a unique ceramics exhibition of work finished during a recent week of ceramic firing, where an anagama kiln was fired at the Millstone Pottery in McGregor.

The firing took 100 hours to reach temperature and five tons of wood (invasive species) were used in the firing. The kiln took five days to cool down.

A

Goodwood resident says she is living in fear after vagrants occupied two vacant houses a few doors away. The woman, who has lived in Goodwood for 25 years, says everything that could be ripped out of the houses at 68 and 70 Milton Road, have been carried away.

“I don’t feel safe anymore. They [vagrants] broke the windows at both homes, ripped the carpets out, cupboards and cables in the house were taken out. Anything worth selling was taken out of the house,” says the woman, who did not want to be named.

She is concerned that the houses would attract further unsavoury activities over the holidays.

“I’m at my wits’ end about these two houses and seriously hope something gets done before any of us gets hurt,” she adds.

Janse van Rensburg says when properties are left vacant, vagrant occupancy should be expected.

“Whenever a property is left unsecured there is the possibility that unauthorised persons will try to access the property. In this case it was indeed so that unauthorised persons were able to gain access to the property. Ideally the owner or the party representing the owner will accept responsibility to secure a property that has been left vacant for whatever reason.

“In the instance of a property transaction one would realistically have the expectation that between a current owner (or appointed representative) and a new owner, measures will be put in place to ensure that a vacant property is properly secured,” says Janse van Rensburg.

Several complaints have been raised about the properties. However Janse van Rensburg says residents should report complaints to the Goodwood police as they have “the mandate to deal with such complaints.”

Dirk van der Berg of Goodwood Armed Patrols says the previous owner was a client.

A few weeks ago suspects were caught and arrested: “One of our armed response officers apprehended suspects some time ago at the premises and police arrested them for housebreaking and theft.

“The biggest problem we as security company are facing is that we are not allowed to just go onto any property and remove unwanted people from the premises. If we had contact with the new owner then we can act to protect his premises. Hopefully the sale will be finalised soon.”

According to Andre van Rhyn, the executor of the estate, the properties were registered into the name of the new owner on Wednesday 20 November.

H

ome of Hope, a non-profit children’s home in Table View might be forced to close its doors if they do not get the necessary funding to stay afloat.

Home of Hope has provided a safe haven to over 20 abused, abandoned and neglected children.

Through the adoption of her own children affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and having grown up in a children’s home, Eleanor Brook (53) started the organisation in 2005.

“Most of our children have been with us since they were babies. Each child has their own story and their own obstacles, mental or physical, to overcome. Some of the children in our care were abandoned in dustbins to die, violently abused, raped, hungry and neglected due to poverty, infected with HIV and Aids and born bearing the effects of excessive drug and alcohol abuse by their mothers during pregnancy. With limited resources, we do our best to give them the love and care they deserve,” says Brook.

In 2011, Home of Hope, started a special needs school, Amathemba, which means ‘our hope’ in Xhosa.

The school is one of a few in South Africa which caters for children with learning disabilities as a result of FASD. They also have a farm where the older children can work and earn a stipend.

“We provide holistic care for every individual. Each child receives individual care, where the right therapy and interventions are given to assist with their disabilities, as far as possible. Our program also caters to 14 other individuals from impoverished communities who would not otherwise have access to education” says Brook.

Social worker Bianca Wichtmann says they are trying not to think about closing the doors. “How do you say to a child you can’t stay here anymore. This is the only place they know, and we are their family.

Wichtmann says they run a big project with very small legs. “We have new exciting projects in the pipeline but that has been put on hold as we are trying to keep our doors open. If we close, a lot of people will be affected. Not only the children but our staff will lose their livelihood.

They have a charity shop that sells second-hand goods, they also sell farm produce and have started a Back-a-Buddy campaign to raise much-needed funds.

“We are really trying to be sustainable, but we are having a tough time. Staff have had to go for months with a staggered salary but that has not affected their commitment and love. We believe the love that we have for the children and that we are a family here keeps us together,” says Wichtmann.

Brook hopes the public will continue to support them. “Our children know what it feels like to be abandoned, not feeling like they belong or having a place to call their own. We have promised to protect them from harm and give them a loving home and the brightest possible future. We hope the public will support our Back-a-Buddy campaign so we can continue caring for these beautiful children. Closing our doors would mean that our children will be separated and placed into overcrowded children’s homes across the Western Cape that don’t have the infrastructure to accommodate their needs or the training to understand their daily struggles,” she says.

Wichtmann adds that placing these children in new homes is also not an overnight process. “There is a huge waiting list. It also comes with the trauma and getting used to a new place. Closing will not only affect the children but the staff as well because we have invested our lives here, so it is a tough time for us but we are trying not to think of the worst,” says Witchmann.

he Glenwood Neighbourhood Watch recently announced their new committee at the annual general meeting at the Goodwood Sports Club.

Committee members include James Ellis as chairman, Jas Visser as deputy chairman, Tilana Mostert as treasurer and Hestia Schonken as a new member.

Ellis said they are focused on fighting crime and being more visible.

“More border patrols with neighbour-

hood watches were discussed as well as availing ourselves when assistance is required by police during operations. Furthermore we also are focused on assisting not only with crime, but when needs arise in our community,” he said. “There has been a drop in crime over the past two years.”

With the festive season approaching, Ellis asked residents to let the watch know if no one is going to be home. “If people are going away, they should please let us know in order for us to keep an eye on their homes.

Water restrictions may be reduced DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

ollowing mayor Dan Plato’s statement earlier this year, that water restrictions would be reconsidered in October, the City last week stated that a decision over this must still be made in consultation with the national department of water and sanitation (DWS) and all users of the Western Cape water supply system.

DWS have scheduled a meeting for the end of November, in which their modelling for the region’s next hydrological year will be presented for consideration and discussion,” said Mayco member for water and

waste Xanthea Limberg,” in a statement to the media on 18 November.

She said the City can’t pre-empt the outcome of the meeting, but will advise residents after consultations have taken place.

According to Limberg, dam levels have decreased by 0.5% over the previous week and are currently at 83.7%.

“Water consumption for the same period was slightly down, falling from 675 million litres/day to 674 million litres/day.

Currently the consumption target for the City is 650 million litres/day,” she added.

“Although our surface water supply is markedly higher ahead of summer 2019/’20 than it has been in recent years, residents

should keep in mind that rainfall for winter 2019 was again below average. This is the fifth year running this has been the case, as reflected in City graphs.”

In response to this statement, Sandra Dickson of the civic organisation Stop Coct, said the City is using the same rhetoric as last year.

“First Plato said restrictions would be reconsidered in October, but now they say November. As was the case last year, the City now says they have to wait upon DWS to lift restrictions.

“If the City could implement water restrictions unilaterally and increase tariffs, why must they now wait for DWS to decrease it?

she said.

Dickson says the City last year implemented a 30% water reduction, while DWS only asked for 10%, resulting in the 650ML consumption target, which was exceeded by about 25ML only for the last three weeks. “It is simply outrageous and indicates that the City thinks the public will not see it. They have double standards, which only benefits the City.”

Dickson adds that should restrictions be reduced to the lower level, the public would be paying 49 cents per KL less.

Hoe lank hou ’n World Cup-babelas?

Diegene wat al erg deur babelas gekasty is, sal weet dat daar nie ’n erger siekte as wingerdgriep is nie.

Sommige ouens raak so siek dat hulle voel hulle kan sterf. Die kop pyn, die maag is ontsteld en alles irriteer jou. Alle reuke maak jou naar, veral kos.

Nou die laaste paar weke het ek ’n vreeslike babelas. Gelukkig darem nie die dranksoort nie, maar wel rugby-babelas.

Met die wêreldbekerrugby het ek letterlik elke dag rugby gelewe.

Van voor die toernooi begin het, het ek al die programme oor rugby gekyk – ou wedstryde, dokumentêre programme, onderhoude met oudspelers, onderhoude met huidige spelers, plaaslike en oorsese ontledingsprogramme.

Daarna het ek elke rugbystorie in die koerante verslind. Oorsese koerante het ek aanlyn gelees om beter perspektief te kry oor wat ander mense van die Springbokke dink. In meeste gevalle het ek my vervies omdat die Bokke nie ’n kans gegun is nie.

Ek dink nie daar is meer iets te sê oor die euforie wat die land oorval het toe die Bokke uiteindelik met die gesogte trofee huis toe kom nie. Koerante het elke storie uitgewring wat oor die Bokke geskryf kon word. Onderhoude is gevoer met spelers se ouers en grootouers en ooms en tantes en predikante en honde en katte. Ons weet nou dat Faf de Klerk van Bokbloemer-faam eens op ’n tyd in ’n skoolkonsert opgetree het en dat Damian de Allende se broer die week ná die toernooi getrou het. Elke aspek van die seëvierende span se lewe gaan in die volgende paar maande ontleed word. Of, soos Joel Stransky onlangs op televisie gesê het, hul lewe gaan nog vir die volgende 24 jaar aan die groot klok hang.

En hier sit ek nou. Ek weet nie wat om naweke met my tyd te maak nie. Soms sit ek die opname van die eindstryd aan en kyk weer na Makazole Mapimpi se skoppie en hoe Lukhanyo Am die bal nonchalant vir hom teruggooi sodat hy die Springbokke se eerste drie in ’n wêreldbeker-eindstryd gaan druk. Wanneer Cheslin Kolbe tussen die Engelse spelers deur dans, druk ek die pauseknoppie net voor hy gaan druk en speel dit weer. Elke keer wil ek ’n traan stort.

Dan kom Mevrou en sê die wêreldbekertoernooi is nou verby en jy moet na die regte wêreld terugkeer en gaan kar was. Of haar winkels toe neem. Hoe lank hou ’n World Cup-babelas? wonder ek.

Dít is in die kind se belang Ek is ’n gekwalifiseerde en geregistreerde maatskaplike werker. Hiermee my professionele opinie en kommer oor die koerantberig “Rugbyafrigter kry trekpas ná onwelvoeglike optrede” (TygerBurger, 6 November).

Ingevolge die huidige Kinderwet en die Wet op Seksuele Misdrywe kan enige individu in die gemeenskap ’n beweerde seksuele oortreding teenoor ’n kind by die polisie aanmeld. Dit is belangrik om kennis te neem dat die beweerde oortreding, die strafregtelike ondersoek, hofverrigtinge en die regsbeslissing deur die hof nog steeds in die beste belang van die kind bly al word die beweerde oortreder ook onskuldig bevind.

Dus stem ek nie saam met dr. Theron wanneer hy sê dit is moeilik om te sê wat in elke kind se beste belang is nie.

Ingevolge die wetgewing kan die betrokke skool ’n strafregtelike klag aanhangig maak en is dit die wetlike verantwoordelikheid van die polisie om die klagte te ondersoek en die saak voor die hof te bring, selfs in ’n situasie waar dit nie die keuse van die kinders se primêre versorgers is nie.

Wetgewing en selfs huidige skolebeleid regverdig en beskerm die skool in hierdie verband. Volgens die berig is die rugbyafrigter deur ’n onafhanklike party in ’n interne tugverhoor skuldig bevind. Hierdie bevestiging is myns insiens bo redelike twyfel ’n sterk aanduiding vir genoegsame gronde vir ’n strafregtelike klag. Aan die ander kant kan die versuim om ’n strafregtelike klag in te dien ook geïnterpreteer word as ’n oortreding van die Kinderwet en die Wet op

Seksuele Misdrywe.

My verdere kommer is dat die rugbyafrigter uit sy pos by die skool ontslaan is, maar heel moontlik verdere kontak gaan hê met ander kinders omdat daar tans geen wetlike buffer is om verdere kontak met kinders te vermy nie. Die Kinderwet het duidelike beskermingsprosesse vir kinders teen oortreders wat strafregtelik skuldig bevind is, soos die registrasie van die skuldige op die nasionale register vir kinderbeskerming en seksuele oortredings.

My addisionele kommer is dat daar ’n sielkundige, ’n maatskaplike werker en ’n staatsaanklaer by hierdie situasie van die skool betrokke was en dit vir my voorkom asof die kinders deur die reg gefaal is en die oortreder wetlik skotvry hiervan afkom. Die moontlikheid bly dat ander kinders deur hierdie rugbyafrigter se sielkundig disfunksionele en patologies afwykende gedrag getraumatiseer kan word.

Hordes flocking to this ‘showpiece’ Oh, come on Pop-up Street Store of the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (TygerBurger, 20 November 2019) limiting the homeless to three items per person!

Now take Vasco Boulevard for a generous display of caring. Travelling suitcases (in perfect condition, nogal) and black refuse bags are off-loaded at the shacks with hundreds of clothing items which the homeless then sort, and what is “unwanted” is then dumped for the City council to remove.

Recently one gentleman brought a carload of bags which resulted in a to-and-fro journey from the car to the

shack – with “unwanted” items being taken back.

Such is the tempo of unwanted items being cleared out from households that it recently developed into items of various kinds being laid out on display for passersby to purchase. Oh yes, added to the above are those boots full of meals distributed regularly by motorists.

Gee, has it ever been better for the homeless? No wonder there are hordes flocking to this showpiece of a slum!

Voortrekkerweg kort verfraaiing Ek wil graag my kommer uitspreek oor die haglike toestand van Voortrekkerweg – vanaf Woodstock tot en met Bellville.

Daar is kerke, klubs en residensiële akkommodasie orals, en dis morsig. Kantooren sake-eenhede is nou ’n blyplek vir mense en hordes gesinne bly nou in kantoorruimtes. Wanneer het hersonering plaasgevind, of is dit sommer net vir intrek? Kan ons rioolstelsel die druk hanteer? Is die kragstelsel voldoende? Voortrekkerweg is nou vol slaggate en enige tyd bars waterpype.

Wat het geword van die mooi woonbuurte soos Goodwood, Parow en Bellville waarheen gesinne baiekeer op uitstappies gegaan het?

Mense word daagliks in Voortrekkerweg beroof. Wat kan ons doen om die straat te herstel?

Kom, laat ons saamstaan en ons hulpkreet tot die owerhede rig om met antwoorde vorendag te kom. Laat ons die raadslede verantwoordbaar hou, of dank hulle af! Ek hoop my noodkreet val nie op dowe ore nie.

Librarian in Bellville ‘saved a life’ It’s 2019 and like so many other South Africans I have lost faith in our government on national, provincial and local levels. l have also lost all faith in myself and my purpose here on earth.

Today, Monday 18 November, I was prepared to end my life. My depression has sucked the last drop of joy I had. I have been living for everyone except for myself. I had to return some books for a friend as these were one of the obligations I was forced to undertake every few weeks.

Nonetheless, I was at my lowest, lowest point. But upon reaching the main counter at Bellville Library I was greeted by a young, friendly newbie (Chad or Shad) who continued to ask me if I enjoyed these books. And when he realized I wasn’t feeling too good instantly encouraged me to get a book on positive thinking. I thought why is this over-enthusiastic guy trying to convince me to read a stupid book? - as if that would help.

He then continued to make a joke about one of the books he had read. He explained the different parts of the library and spoke about his dreams of becoming the wealthiest assistant librarian in the world which surprisingly made me laugh, much to my delight. This was the first time all week I had not thought about ending my life, but rather considering signing up and joining a library.

This enthusiastic young man without knowing had stopped me from committing one of the biggest sins.

I thank the Almighty for allowing me to experience such a miracle. The world needs to know about this great young man.

eer as 100 katte van ’n groot aantal kat­rasse, ook skaars soorte, is ingeskryf vir die internasionale katskou wat op Saterdag 30 November by die Marco Polo-klubhuis by die Durbanvillerenbaan aangebied word.

Dit wissel van die Lykoi, die weerwolfkat wat as die skaarsste kat beskou word, tot die Elf, ’n haarlose kat met krulore, sowel as Siamese, Persiese katte, Britse korthaarkatte, Burmese en Abessynse katte.

Die kleinste katras ter wêreld, die Singapura, sowel as die grootste katras ter wêreld, die Maine Coon, sal ook teenwoordig wees. Daar is ook ’n afdeling vir gewone huiskatte.

Die katskou, wat deur die Cat Association of Southern Africa (Casa) aangebied word, is die laaste katskou in Suid-Afrika vanjaar. Die assosiasie is geaffilieer by die Wêreld-Kattefederasie (WCF).

Daar sal plaaslike sowel as besoekende beoordelaars van verskeie organisasies wees, terwyl kampioenkatte van so ver as Gauteng af kom.

Rattle them bones in fun run The National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (Nofsa) invites the public for support in joining their upcoming 5km Fun Run/Walk on 30 November in Durbanville.

“You will not only run for fun, but there will be lots of prizes up for grabs. You can bring your kids along to enjoy face painting and jumping castles, where Sherpa Kids will keep them busy and entertained,” says a spokesperson at Nofsa.

The fun run takes place at the NG Church Bergsig on the corner of Boland- and Protea Way in Durbanville.

It starts at 08:00 and registration takes place between 07:00 and 07:45. Children under seven enter for free, children under 18 R60 and adults R100. Runners can register online at https://enter.entryninja.com/events/51942fundraising-fun-walk/enter. On-the-day entries will be R30 extra per entry.

ou might have heard or read about diabetes, or you know someone with diabetes, or perhaps you are diabetic. Much has been done to raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the individual and family.

World Diabetes Day was commemorated on 14 November and the focus was on prevention and lifestyle changes such as regular check-ups, achieving a healthy body weight and exercise.

The provincial health department’s Northern Tygerberg Substructure’s Zolani Zenzile told TygerBurger out of the 23 032 screenings done between April 2018 and October 2019, 1 899 patients were diagnosed with diabetes.

He said people are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes, if you are over 45 years old; you exercise less than three times per week; you have high blood pressure; you are overweight; and you have a family history of Type 2 diabetes.

“It is important to prioritise healthy lifestyles. Physical activity and healthy eating are considered essential in combating a number of lifestyle diseases, including diabetes. Many deaths and complications can be avoided. We would therefore like to encourage people to go for screening. The department has free testing available at all clinics when clients go for routine visits. Those with a strong family history of diabetes are often at risk of developing the disease,” said provincial minister Nomafrench Mbombo.

Zenzile explained that diabetes is a condition in which your body is unable to use the glucose from the food you eat.

“Glucose comes from foods such as breads, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes,

fruits and some vegetables. To use glucose, your body needs insulin, which is made by a gland in your body called the pancreas. The disease affects one’s metabolism which can cause excessive urination and continuous thirst.

“There are two types. Type 1 occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin. These patients must inject insulin to survive. Type 2 diabetes is caused when the insulin, which the pancreas produces, is either not enough or does not work properly,” he said. “Approximately 85 to 90% of all people with diabetes are type 2, and many people who have this condition are undiagnosed.”

According to Zenzile early diagnosis is extremely important.

“If you are over 35 and have any of the risk factors, you should be tested every year. A simple finger-prick test at your local pharmacy or clinic can diagnose the strong likelihood that you may have diabetes within a minute.

“Diabetes is a serious illness. If it is left untreated or is not well managed, the high levels of blood glucose associated with diabetes can slowly damage both the fine nerves and the small and large blood vessels in the body, resulting in a variety of complications. These include heart disease, blindness, amputation, kidney disease and erectile dysfunction or impotence. The good news is that with careful management, these complications can be delayed and even prevented, but early diagnosis is very important,” he said.

Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination; excessive thirst; increased hunger; unusual weight loss; tiredness; lack of interest and concentration; blurred vision; frequent or recurring infections; cuts and bruises that are slow to heal and boils and itching skin.

Beauty out of icecream sticks TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

A

Rugby resident is doing his bit for the environment and he is able to put food on the table through his crafts.

Geoffrey Wentzel (62) collects ice-cream sticks and makes jewellery boxes, fruit baskets, pen holders, cellphone holders and lamps among other things.

The father of two got the idea when he accompanied his sister and her daughter to Groote Schuur Hospital. As we walked into the reception, this basket caught my attention as it sat on the front counter,” he says.

Out of curiosity he enquired about the basket and he was told it was made by one of the patients.

“I was amazed, and they showed me the patient. I asked for his blessing to copy the idea. I was looking for a source of income,

and he agreed,” he says.

“Everywhere I go, I pick up things,” he says as he takes out a few sticks from his pocket.

“I love the environment and I believe this is me doing my bit. There are different sizes and shapes and it allows me to try out different things. I really enjoy doing this and I hope people can also see the value,” he says.

Wentzel works as a handyman at three residential complexes. He also uses wooded pegs for some of the goods.

“This is very therapeutic for me and very relaxing. It has taught me patience and it allows me to connect with my creative being.

I walk from Rugby to Mowbray and along the way I look for ice-cream sticks,” he says adding that he also uses toilet rolls to enhance some of his products.

Wentzel has gone through his own heartache. He is divorced and estranged from his

two children. He also lost businesses and his house years ago.

“I didn’t give up, instead I looked at how I can do things different. What can I do? I tapped into that inner being and now I use the ideas I get from God. Anyone can do it.

Find strength and turn things around.

“There is so much talent in the country.

I want my story to inspire someone. If I can do it anyone can do it. I love what I do, and I love looking after the environment. I’m in a very happy space when I’m making my products,” he says.

Give thanks to nannies W

hile thanksgiving is not traditionally celebrated in South Africa, Nanny ‘n Me founder Lara Schoenfeld says this is the perfect time to show thanks to childminders for the role they play in children’s lives.

The organisation, which offers weekly group sessions for babies and toddlers to come together with their nannies and engage in age-appropriate play, recently held their annual celebration

day.

Addressing the crowd of 1000 parents, nannies, babies and toddlers gathered at The Oval, Century City, Schoenfeld said, “You are brave and self-sacrificing; you carry so many burdens, and yet you come to work full of energy and love for our children.

You kiss their owies when we are not there, you make them lunch and let them sleep on your backs; you sing to them, play with them and laugh with them – nannies,

where would we be without you?” she asked.

She also went on to say that 69% of the nannies they surveyed take two hours to get to work after waking up at 04:30 every morning, and spend 12% of their income commuting to work.

Creating community Enjoying the celebration day was Veronica, nanny to two-year-old Jack together with his mother Nora. “I appreciate hearing

about different ways to teach children, and how the kids learn to play with each other and share,” she said, of the weekly groups.

For Nora, the community that Nanny ‘n Me has created has been a highlight. “The group has bonded so much that they do play dates and go to the library together on other days of the week.

I have peace of mind that they are always having fun.”

The sense of community spirit was tangible at the event, which is an opportunity for nannies to get the recognition they so deserve.

“We have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day; but why not Nanny’s Day?” asked Schoenfeld.

“Well nannies, this is your day.”

Book helps to explain ADHD AVRIL FILLIES

W

e all know the story of Goldilocks and the three bears from our childhood years but have you ever considered why Goldilocks got herself into so much (potential) trouble?

The Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), has just launched their new book All of these things are important to me – the first fictional story about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in South Africa.

“At least 20 children in South Africa suffers from ADHD, a disorder marked by symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The foundation provides free ADHD and mental health screening to children in disadvantaged communities,” says Prof Renata Schoeman, co-founder of the foundation.

Going back to the story of Goldilocks; maybe she struggled with inattentiveness, absentmindedly wandered off into the woods, and then impulsively entered a strange house.

And with her usual hyperactive way, started climbing on furniture ... She was lucky, but thousands of other kids aren’t.

“Although mental health clinics exist in the public sector, children with ADHD often never reach this point of diagnosis and treatment due to a lack of awareness and knowledge in their communities.

“They are never screened for ADHD, and may be labelled as naughty, or ‘stupid’, or just silently fall out of the educational system and only come to our attention when absorbed in the criminal justice system. These children never have the opportunity to flourish,” Schoeman says.

According to her, the foundation aims to remove mental health barriers to education.

“We visit underprivileged schools where

we provide non-profit (free) screening for ADHD, anxiety, depression, visual and hearing problems, and developmental problems to the children.

This ensures early referral, diagnosis and treatment, and improve the quality of life of these children,” she says.

In South Africa, there is a huge problem in identifying children with mental health problems due to lack of resources in the departments of health and education.

“Our intervention has a positive ripple effect by helping to keep children in schools and progress educationally, which enhances their chances of securing work and keeping away from vices.

“During the past two years, the foundation has been screening children for mental health disorders (such as ADHD, depression and anxiety), other learning disorders, and health-related problems (such as eye- and ear problems) in the Metro North and Metro East educational districts in the Western Cape,” Schoeman says.

In addition to screening at schools, they have recently opened a screening centre at Tygerberg Hospital and is currently also negotiating to secure a space for another screening centre at Badisa in Bellville.

As many conditions can “mimic” as ADHD or accompany it as co-morbid conditions – such as visual or auditory problems – the foundation is faced with a situation where the public sector, children in underprivileged areas where they are working in, have no access to these facilities.

Or where there are indeed facilities, children need to wait for months until they can be assisted.

“We, therefore, recruited also pro bono volunteers (optometrists, audiologists, and educational psychologists) to assist us. However,

“We also strongly focus on raising awareness and educating parents, teachers and the communities about ADHD and other mental health conditions. We provide parental guidance meetings, as well as teacher training.

We also believe that research is crucial and have completed a study last year analysing the data from our first year of operations, We received the excellence award for community service last year,” she says.

The book aims to increase awareness and educate communities about ADHD (and related mental health disorders).

The intent is that a parent or teacher should read the story with the child and use the scientific content that follows as a resource to answer the child’s and their own

questions about ADHD. The book is written in English, and has been translated into Afrikaans and isiXhosa, isiZulu and Sesotho to afford as many children as possible, the opportunity to hear the story in their mother tongue.

They will understand it and know they are understood when reading the story in their mother tongue.

The book launch is on Wednesday 4 December at De Oude Social Café in Pandoer Street in Welgemoed from 18:00 until 20:00.

Tickets cost R230 per person and include a signed copy of the book, as well as a signature Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation pizza and milkshake (this can be substituted for beer or wine).

UCT collaborates on TB vaccine clinical trial The South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (Satvi) – located at the University of Cape Town – as well as Biofabri and International Aids Vaccine Initiative (Iavi) recently announced an ongoing clinical trial to further evaluate the novel tuberculosis (TB) vaccine candidate MTBVAC in an adult endemic population.

TB is one of the top 10 leading causes of all deaths worldwide and kills about 1.6 million people annually. Each year, about 10 million new cases of TB are detected. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that the annual global economic burden of the TB epidemic is more than $20 billion (over R296 billion).

Mark Feinberg, president and CEO of Iavi, said: “We believe this trial is an important step on the path to addressing one of the world’s most urgent public health problems.”

Esteban Rodríguez, general manager of Biofabri, said: “In 2008, Biofabri acquired the commitment to make available MTBVAC vaccine worldwide and at an affordable price. Such a commitment enhances Biofabri’s involvement in the fight against tuberculosis disease, particularly in low-income countries.”

BCG, the only TB vaccine currently used for the prevention of TB disease, is derived from a bovine, rather than human, strain of TB bacteria. It is effective in preventing severe TB disease in infants and children. In adults, however, BCG has only variable effectiveness in disease prevention. MTBVAC is a live, attenuated (weakened) form of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB in humans. It might be more effective in preventing TB disease than BCG. Because it is attenuated, it does not have the ability to cause disease in healthy

people. A Phase Ia trial showed that MTBVAC demonstrated a similar safety profile to BCG at a similar dose.

The clinical trial, designated A-050, is a Phase Ib/IIa safety and dose-finding study of MTBVAC. This trial is designed to test different doses of MTBVAC and collect additional safety and immunogenicity information in healthy adults with and without evidence of having been previously infected with TB bacteria. It also has the potential to show whether vaccination with MTBVAC produces an immune response distinct from the response to BCG. In A-050, up to 144 participants at Satvi trial site in Worcester, South Africa, will receive either one administration of MTBVAC at different doses or BCG at the standard adult dose. Participants will be monitored for safety and immune response for 12 months after vaccination.

A look inside Pollsmoor prison NETTALIE VILJOEN With a prison population of 7 079, Pollsmoor has many stories to tell. And while the ones on overcrowding and gang violence need to be told, they do tend to drown out those that speak of regret and atonement.

sion,” says Lewies Davids, the manager of communications at Pollsmoor prison.

People’s Post joined him, with a group of social work students and social workers, during a walk-through of Pollsmoor medium C and the female centre on Tuesday 19 November.

One of these stories belongs to Ruth (a pseudonym). At eight months pregnant, she finds herself in the care unit for expecting women and women over 60. The 29-year-old is serving a three-month sentence for possession of drugs and suspicion of smuggling.

This being her first offence, she got a R3 000 fine or a three-month jail sentence.

Ruth says she simply could not afford to pay the fine. Besides the baby on the way, she also has three other children who depend on her.

With the father out of the picture and the prospect of a fourth mouth to feed, Ruth says she felt like she had no choice but to agree when her sister, who she was visiting in prison, suggested she smuggle in drugs.

Ironically, Ruth entered Pollsmoor as her sister left. Ruth says she now deeply regrets her decision and if she could go back in time

she would definitely not have done it. Her release is set for Sunday 2 February.

“When I get out I am going to take my children and return to my family home in Port Elizabeth. With the help of my mother, father and brother I hope to start over,” she says. If Ruth’s plan works out, she will be one of the lucky few.

Davids says reintegration into society is one of the biggest challenges inmates face once they leave prison. He says many of the offenders have been abandoned by their families. “They have paid the price for their crime but often their families, their communities don’t want them back. That is why our slogan is ‘Corrections is a societal responsibility’.” He encourages family members to visit their fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters in jail.

“That visit twice a month is sometimes the only thing they look forward to,” says Davids. After a tour of medium C and the female centre, it is easy to understand why.

Of the thousands held at Pollsmoor, 4 500 are awaiting trial. Repeat offenders and suspects accused of aggressive crime are held while investigations are ongoing. Others re-

main in prison either because they can’t get bail (due to the violent nature of the crime) or because they can’t afford it.

While the time awaiting trial is not supposed to exceed 24 months, it can stretch to six years or even longer depending on whether cases get postponed in the courts (for example, if a witness fails to appear).

Because of its central location in Tokai, Pollsmoor prison serves as the main gateway for suspects entering the prison system in the Western Cape. It is fed by 26 courts and 56 police stations. All of these factors, combined with South Africa’s socio-economic ills, have led to Pollsmoor being labelled the most overcrowded prison in the province.

Medium C, also called the release centre, houses male offenders who are either serving short sentences or are almost at the end of long terms. Here, 26 beds are squeezed into one cell roughly the size of a single garage, with one bathroom to share. Apparently, this is one of the less overcrowded units at Pollsmoor. At 15:00 sharp, inmates get shut into their cells. As the light starts to leave the room, so does the authority of the wardens. This is when the underground order of the Number Gangs (the 26’s, the 27’s and the 28’s) sets in – an old prison culture dating back to the early 1900s. The doors will only open again at 6:00.

Honouring the City’s biggest tree T

According to a statement, six of the champion trees recognised in the province are located at Arderne Gardens in Claremont. Pictured are the City of Cape Town’s officials and the Friends of the Company’s Garden.

he Ficus Elastica in the Company’s Garden was crowned a champion tree by the national department of environment, forestry and fisheries on Friday 15 November.

According to a statement this is one of the 90 remarkable trees identified for the Champion Tree Project run by the department nationwide. It is 27 metres tall and the branches reach 38.4 metres wide. It is located at the northern entrance of the garden. The tree is said to be part of the Ficus genus species, which is native to north-east India and southern Indonesia and forms part of the Banyan group of figs.

Explaining the project, the statement reads: “The significance of the recognition of champion trees is that it has protected status under the National Forests Act. “In terms of the act, no person may cut, disturb, damage or destroy any protected tree or possess, collect, remove, transport, export, purchase, sell, donate or in any other manner acquire or dispose of any protected tree or any forest product derived from a protected tree, except under a licence granted by the minister or in terms of an

exemption from the provisions.

Contravention of the act is seen as an offence that may result in a fine or imprisonment for a period up to three years.”

Zahid Badroodien, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for community services and health, says the City’s recreation and parks department is delighted about the accolade.

He says it is only through recognition, education and awareness that the City will be better prepared to care for trees.

Badroodien says trees carry a lot of history and the ones in the Company’s Garden are a unique variety that form part of Africa’s forest and tree heritage.

“The recognition and acknowledgement mean a lot as champion trees are now enjoying protected status.

“Trees with such significance should get the care they deserve as it also plays an important role in the ecosystem and educating future generations in showing respect for nature.

“I cannot imagine a city without trees – let us share the responsibility to protect these treasures,” says Badroodien.

New horizons for drag pageant The eighth Ms Drag Ambassador Beauty Queen will be crowned at the Kensington Civic Centre on Saturday 30 November.

The pageant, owned and run under the banner of the Ms Drag Ambassador South Africa Organisation (a registered non-profit organisation), creates a platform for drag and female impersonation to be recognised on a grand scale.

This year’s pageant theme is “Disney Reloaded” and patrons are invited to dress accordingly.

An array of contestants will take to the stage to vie for the title. Audience members will also be treated to spectacular entertainment including performances by drag cabaret artists and DJ Cool J. “We aim to select a Queen who is a role model, who embodies the values and morals of fairness and impartiality, a healthy respect for the rights of all people within and out-

side of the boundaries of the Western Cape and South Africa at large, irrespective of creed or colour, religion or affiliation, gender or orientation, disability or vulnerability and who is recognized as an ambassador of her community and LGBTI matters,” says Logan McGregor, the host and owner of the pageant.

McGregor, a multi-beauty pageant title holder, launched the event in 2012. She is a former Ms Mardi Gras National, former Ms Gay Western Cape and the current Ms Diva South Africa.

Today the pageant is one of the highlights on the LGBTI calendar.

It also enjoys the support of local heterosexual Kensington communities.

The Kensington Civic Centre has been home to the pageant from the beginning. McGregor, who hails from Kensington, embarked on this project to plough back into the com-

munity in which she was raised.

“This gathering signifies the vision of the Ms Drag Ambassador South Africa Organisation, aligning communities and merging our people into a collective population, ignorant and blind to physical differences and preferences which are the causes of disharmony in our communities,” says McGregor.

The public have been asked to comment on the allocation of a new provincial licence mark to all registering authorities of the Western Cape.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, MEC for transport and public works, published this notice in the provincial gazette on Friday 15 November.

“This move is a pre-emptive one, driven by the rate at which the department calls for input into new provincial licence mark for motor vehicles and vehicle licence fee increase. The current ‘CAA’ and ‘CAW’ licence numbers are fast approaching the 100 000 mark, both events expected to happen within the next month,” says Jandré Bakker, spokesperson for the department.

Other practical reasons for considering a provincial licence mark as opposed to adding more local marks to the existing ones are: . a municipality having multiple licence marks allocated to its registering authorities, e.g. the City with the CA, CAA, CEY, CF, CFM, CFR and CY licence marks. This situation sometimes leads to the manipulation of address information on NaTIS where a vehicle owner favours a particular licence mark of another area over his/her local licence mark.

. more than one municipality shares the same licence mark, e.g. the municipalities of Theewaterskloof and Overstrand share the CAM licence mark. . the current municipal areas do not in all respects align with the areas of the then department of inland revenue through which licence marks were originally established and allocated. This situation leads to a vehicle being allocated with a licence number that contains a licence mark (as programmed on NaTIS) at a registering authority that is not part of the local municipality of the vehicle owner – a situation where revenue (through vehicle licence fees) is then not paid to the correct municipality.

“When the CAW licence mark reaches 100 000 licence numbers it will be replaced by the new licence mark CAG as published in Provincial Gazette 7884, on 26 February 2018. This is an interim arrangement until such time that a new provincial licence mark is in place to cover all the areas of the province,” Bakker says.

The CAA licence mark will, however, be allowed to exceed 100 000, in the interim, as the higher than expected demand for CAA licence numbers will not allow for a new lo-

cal licence mark to be published in time. This means that such a licence number will therefore consist of a combination of 9 characters. However, the department would like to advise the public, traffic law enforcement authorities, as well as certified number plate manufacturers that one of the five sizes of number plates that are legally allowed on vehicles registered before 1 January 2010 will not comply with the SABS standards (SANS code) if a 9-character licence number is used. Therefore, instead of the 440mm x 120mm size number plate, the 520mm x 113mm size must be used as this will enable motorists to still comply with the law. As at 12 November 2019, 81964 CAA numbers have been allocated since its introduction on 13 April 2019.

In terms of the increase in vehicle licence fees, the notice proposed an average increase of approximately 4.5%.

“This is in line with inflation. Licence fees are, among other activities, predominantly used for maintenance and building of the road infrastructure,” Bakker says.

Children’s book on ADHD launched A

first of its kind book aims to create awareness about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

With 1 in 20 children in South Africa living with ADHD and an estimated 1-million South African adults, the book All of these things are important to me, is the first fictional book launched in South Africa. Writers are hoping improved awareness will help early detection and intervention.

The book, illustrated by David Griessel, is co-written by Prof Renata Schoeman, a psychiatrist, and the co-author of the South African management guidelines for ADHD, and celebrated author, Refiloe Moahloli.

Schoeman’s practice is based in Oude Westhof.

The book explores the adventurous life of Zee in a short and colourful narrative in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Sesotho, and through its captivating storytelling, explains how a child with ADHD perceives and lives in the world. The second part of the book offers a simple, but accurate explanation of ADHD: what it is, how it is diagnosed and how it is managed. It also offers valuable advice for parents, educators and health care professionals in understanding and ma-

naging ADHD. Schoeman says ADHD is a condition often misdiagnosed, and plagued by myths and misunderstandings, particularly with regard to treatment.

“When undiagnosed or not effectively treated, ADHD often sees children being unfairly labelled as naughty, delinquent, unteachable, and as adults, as lazy or incompetent. It’s important to talk about ADHD and how it hampers educational performance, self-esteem, relationships and productivity.

We also need to create awareness about other mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and substance abuse, which can sometimes surface when ADHD is either mistreated or goes undetected.”

Schoeman says the playful narrative of the book was intentional to ensure that children are entertained whilst parents use the scientific content to answer their children or even their own, questions about ADHD. “We wanted to create a resource that would be accessible to as many South Africans as possible in native languages and in the voice of a child with which both children, parents and teachers, could resonate.”

Parenting a child with ADHD can be challenging if one is not equipped but if you seek the right knowledge you can untap the potential of your children and help them to cope with their symptoms better.” . Proceeds from the book will be donated to the Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation, founded by Prof Schoeman and athlete Nic de Beer in 2017, which funds and manages the screening of children in underprivileged areas, not only for the early detection and intervention of ADHD but also other mental health conditions and learning difficulties.

The Foundation trains teachers and caregivers and upskill NGO’s in the early detection of ADHD and other mental health disorders. To date they have offered free mental health services to 21 781 children in the Western Cape and opened an ADHD screening centre at the Tygerberg Hospital earlier this year. They have also expanded to Gauteng where they launched in October 2019, and plan to be operational from early 2020. . Manure could be used to power feed plant ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme Cow manure may soon be converted to electricity to complement the current Eskom feed to a company in Klipheuwel, if the project is supported by the City of Cape Town.

Ruan Beneke, councillor for ward 105, which includes Klipheuwel, submitted a motion at the meeting of subcouncil 7 last Monday that the subcouncil in principle support this biogas electrification project in Klipheuwel.

According to the municipal agenda Afgri Animal Feeds in Klipheuwel is looking at

alternative energy sources to complement its current Eskom feed.

One such alternative is a green energy option in which methane gas from cow manure will be converted to electricity, and relayed back to Afgri Animal Feeds.

In order to proceed with this initiative, a servitude needs to be registered over a

small portion of City land and comment from subcouncil will be required as part of the process.

In order to expedite the application process, which still needs to be initiated by Afgri Animal Feeds, a recommendation that subcouncil in principle support this initiative was accepted at the meeting Monday.

Old online accounts a threat I

t’s very likely that you’ve been using the internet for many years and already forgot how many different accounts you’ve created.

However, old accounts pose a real threat as there’s a big chance they store a lot of sensitive data. If one of your old accounts is leaked, it can become an open door for cybercriminals to hack into your email, Facebook, and even computer or smartphone.

“News about data breaches and leaks are starting to feel like a common thing. And even though we tend to care about our most important accounts, we usually forget that those we barely use also contain sensitive information,” says Daniel Markuson, a digital privacy expert at NordVPN. “An important thing to remember is that consequences that follow a breach usually are not immediate. It can take months or even years until cybercriminals start using this data to access other websites where the same login details have been used.”

According to Markuson, a websi-

“Those huge numbers mean that if you’ve ever had an account online, at some point, your data was probably exposed in a breach,” he says.

Make a list of all your old online accounts and start deleting them.

Google your name, surname, and nickname you usually use online.

There’s a high chance you’ll be surprised to see on how many different social media pages and forums your name appears. Go one-by-one and try deleting the ones you are not using anymore. It might be more difficult than it seems, and this process will require patience.

Use online security tools, especially if you don’t want to think about digital security. Many of us would better spend our days thinking about plenty of other much more interesting things than cybersecurity. If you don’t want to think about that, you need to use digital security tools.

Talk about money taboo, says survey Money is a bigger taboo than sex, religion or politics, according to a survey by one of the world’s largest independent financial advisory organisations.

In the global survey, conducted by deVere Group, 56% of those polled ranked personal finance as the most difficult subject to discuss with family, friends and colleagues.

It came ahead of sex (18%), politics (12%), religion (8%) and health issues (6%) in the poll of more than 700 clients in Africa, the UK, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

“We’re moving towards the holiday period when people, typically, are more likely to get together with loved ones than at any other time in the year,” comments Nigel Green, founder of deVere Group.

“But the survey shows that what

they are least likely to be discussing is personal finance - including income, taxes, pensions, debt, savings and expenses.

“Money remains the biggest sociatal taboo.”

He continues: “The taboo of talking money needs to be broken down and normalised.

“We need to recognise and celebrate how money can truly provide individuals and their loved ones with incredible life-enhancing opportunities.

“In addition, high-net-worth individuals tend to be society’s primary wealth and job creators, major tax contributors and philanthropists.”

He goes on to add, “The de-stigmatisation of talking money would also help banish the ‘head in the sand’ attitude to personal finances that pre-

vents many from achieving their financial goals.

“Plus, when money is an awkward topic of conversation, it is easier for people to get an unfair deal.

These people typically tend to be women, younger people and ethnic minorities. Silence about money issues can often allow the unfairness to continue unabated.

“Finances can be complex and are specific to each individual. The answer is to seek independent, expert help from professionals who will be able to signpost people in the right direction.

“We use money every day, it’s an essential part of our lives. Therefore, we need to get more comfortable discussing it.

“Beginning a conversation about money is the first step.”

RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj A local non-profit organisation (NPO) who works with vulnerable children welcomed the conviction of a man found guilty of being in possession of child pornography.

The convicted Dawid Lotz from Malmesbury was handed down a 10year prison sentence at the Parow regional court on Monday 18 November.

Lotz worked as a control prosecutor at the Atlantis magistrate’s court until three years ago.

Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority told TygerBurger that Lotz resigned from the NPA in December 2016.

Childline Western Cape, who works with children who either are at risk of, or who have experienced sexual abuse and, or trauma and who has offices in Parow, say they are glad for any conviction and sentencing in cases which involves the possession of child pornography.

“It sends out a clear message that child pornography is a crime, and should be reported to the police.

“We are pleased to note that the many efforts being made to bring awareness to this issue, are bearing fruit,” Cheryl Morilly, deputy director, says.

She encourages parents and caregivers to be involved in their children’s social media activities and to talk about the dangers of sharing photos on social media.

“Parents should also be cautious about the kinds of information and photos which they share about their children on social media which may have potential dangers for their children such as their safety, their future digital footprint and which could negatively affect their self-esteem,” Morilly says.

Ntabazalila says the 44-year-old Lotz was sentenced to a 10-year direct imprisonment of which three years were suspended for five years. He was found in possession of 125 images of child pornography. Lotz was also sentenced to three years direct imprisonment for sexual assault which was suspended for five years.

Capt Frederick van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson, says the police are pleased with the outcome.

The matter was investigated by the police’s provincial family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit. The unit was made aware of Lotz being in possession of child pornography in October 2016.

According to Van Wyk the offices at the Atlantis magistrate’s court as well as the convict’s house were searched.

“Exhibits were seized by the provincial cyber crime unit,” Van Wyk explains.

Lotz first appeared in court on 31 December 2016 on charges of the possession of child pornography and sexual assault.

A further order is made that his name be recorded in the sexual offences register and that he is found unfit to work with children and also unfit to possess a firearm, police say.

With movies, board games, robotics, books and even clothing, the humble brick has morphed into a multi-billion dollar industry.

In the background, it has also had a growing following of a different kind – adults.

No longer are parents doomed to unintentionally step on their children’s lego bricks and hurting themselves while barefoot.

These days grown-ups step on their own lego bricks.

These adults are called AFOLs - Adult Fans Of Lego. Increasingly these AFOLs are getting together to share their passion for the interlocking plastic brick.

The CapeLUG group (LEGO User Group) was formed in 2016 by Marick Hornsveld from Somerset West.

The group now has 44 members from across the Cape.

They come together bi-monthly in Pinelands and have building competitions. Every other month they have a social gathering called Brickday.

Here members can share ideas and show what they’re working on.

In March 2019 the group was officially recognised by the Lego Group in Denmark and is now CapeLUG has also achieved RLUG status in March 2019 (Recognised LEGO®️ User Group) that means CapeLUG is now recognised by the LEGO®️ Group in Denmark.

Elmar Wentzel, one of the members who lives in Malmesbury, says he finds his hobby

very relaxing.

An engineer by day, he enjoys “following the instructions and creating something without thinking too much about it.”

He spends around seven to eight hours a week on it but says it’s not enough. He shares the hobby with his wife Colleen and together they have a separate room for their collection. The cost of it all differs from person to person, he says.

“Like any hobby, it depends on yourself how extreme you want to go. It is a quality product and also has collector’s items.”

He realised he wasn’t the only adult who enjoys Lego around four years ago when he spent time in a toyshop looking at the product. Here he met other shoppers and they started chatting about their passion.

Elmar says the biggest joy is when the group displays their goods at malls. “The expression on children’s faces during public displays - absolutely priceless!”

New social housing units in Bothasig R

esidents of Cape Town working in and around Bothasig, Century City or the City Bowl who travel from far flung areas now have an opportunity to live closer to work.

Construction of 314 new rental units is set to begin soon on land owned by Communicare in Bothasig.

The first of Bothasig Gardens comprising of 165 units was completed in 1994 and Phase 2 was occupied in 2013 with 120 units under the government’s social housing programme.

Phase three extends the social housing by adding 314 homes for families who would otherwise find living in Bothasig unaffordable.

This model is said to make it possible for Communicare to allocate over R20 million of its own funds to develop the social housing at Bothasig Gardens.

R162.8 million will be spent on this development financed through a combination of Communicare funds, commercial loans and government grants.

A loan of R33 million has been raised from Mergence Infrastructure and Development Debt Fund, an independent asset management company managed by Mergence Investment Managers.

“We are pioneers in impact investment in

South Africa. We choose to work with well managed institutions such as Communicare that make a social and economic difference to people’s lives.

We believe that our partnership with Communicare on the Bothasig Gardens development will assist in increasing the availability of affordable residential rental accommodation in Cape Town,” head of Investments at Mergence, Mark van Wyk said.

He said the development will afford 314 families the opportunity to be closer to work opportunities, to main transport routes along the N1, schools, hospitals and local shopping malls.

“It provides opportunities for Cape Town residents to live in areas from which they were previously excluded.

Along with these new apartments, we are creating a community for tenants by building designated play areas and a hall for recreational and cultural activities.

It is about creating the kind of community that we would want to share and be part of.”

Van Wyk said that saving money and wa-

ter is important for tenants.

“Communicare will install energy-saving lighting, heat pumps, dual flush toilets and water-wise showerheads to help tenants save.

The indigenous landscape gardens will be irrigated by using water harvested on site.”

Furthermore, to qualify for accommodation at Bothasig Gardens, van Wyk said that families must earn a household income of less than R15 000.

“However, 30% of the accommodation will be allocated to households earning less than R5 500 per month,” he added.

Construction on the two, three and four-storey buildings began this month.

“These are good quality studio, one- and two-bedroom homes that afford tenants a starter opportunity to achieve greater things.”

There are four different types of units to choose from to accommodate a range of people in different stage of their lives.

Power Series revs up for final showdown T

he season finale of this year’s Power Series sponsored by Wingfield Motors at Killarney International Raceway on Saturday 30 November features an additional attraction in the form of a one-hour endurance race for the Burly Pro GTi Challenge racers.

This category, as its name suggests, is only open to Volkswagens of various models, nearly all using some version of the proven two-litre GTi engine.

The longer format gives race fans a rare opportunity to watch frantic pit-stops, tyre swops, driver changes and even emergency repairs after crashes or breakdowns.

Its a fascinating aspect of motor racing that we don’t get to see in the exciting quick-fire eight and 10-lap sprint races that make up the regional championship Power Series at the home of motorsport in the Western Cape.

The bumper programme for the day also includes sprint races for the GTi Challenge, Shatterfix Fine & Millstock Cars Pre 1980 and 1990 Cars, V8 Masters and Makita Supercars, Pirelli Sports & GT cars and Formula Libre open-wheelers, as well as two motorcycle categories, the RST Trac Mac Clubmans, Classic & Breakfast Run Motorcycles and the RST Trac Mac Powersport Motorcycles.

Each round of the Power Series also includes a Fan Walk during the lunch break when spectators are invited down onto the circuit

Local race attracts elite tri-athletes Pablo Dapena took the crown in the inaugural Challenge CapeTown on Sunday 10 November, when he sprinted to the finish line in a time of 3:46:48.

The Spaniard finished approximately 90 seconds ahead of Australia’s Steven McKenna in second place, with local men’s contestant Matt Trautman coming in third.

First out of the water after a strong swim, Dapena formed part of a six-man bunch that dominated most of the 90km cycle from Big Bay into the Company’s Garden. But it was on the run where he showed his strength, and he quickly set the pace in front, together with McKenna, with Trautman following close behind. Dapena was ecstatic about his victory.

“The conditions were amazing. I had a great swim and enjoyed the flat and fast bike. The run was a little windy at times and that hill was a challenge, but I loved racing in Cape Town, and I hope to be back next year”.

The women’s race belonged to the UK’s Emma Pallant, who took a convincing win in 4:14:51 – seven minutes faster than South Africa’s Annah Watkinson, and almost 10 minutes ahead of fellow British pro Laura Siddall.

“I loved the swim and the run was tough,” noted Pallant. “The flat and fast bike made for an awesome day, and I had great fun on the course.”

This was a historic day for the race organisers, who successfully staged the first middle distance triathlon in the City of Cape Town. The 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run showcased the Mother City in a way that no mass participation event athlete has seen it before.

The day dawned to a misty but wind-free Big Bay, and the race opened with ideal swim conditions and water temperatures reaching 15.5°C. The cycle followed, which comprised three spectacularly scenic loops along Otto du Plessis Drive with its uninterrupted ocean views, followed by a ride into the City, and a final sprint along Adderley Street and Government Avenue in the Company’s Garden.

This was the first time that a cycle race went through the historic Garden.

The 21km run through the Zonnebloem and District Six precinct showcased many of the City’s most historically significant landmarks, including Parliament, City Hall, and the Castle of Good Hope. Three 7km laps completed the run, which included a brutal climb from the Castle all the way up to the M3.

“We couldn’t have asked for better conditions to stage this inaugural event,” said race director Gary Marescia.

The race attracted participants from 20 countries across the globe, with women making up 27% of the field.

Belhar Dolphins fall NOORE NACERODIEN Little after a week after going down 17-4 to Falcons, Belhar Dolphins fought hard, but ultimately succumbed to Westridge Yankees 7-5 in their Cape Town Softball Association Major league match in Turfhall on Sunday 24 November.

Elsewhere, Table View Tornadoes felt the wrath of Falcons, going down 9-4.

In the Super League, both games produced tight finishes.

In a game that produced 24 hits, Glenthorn A’s edged out Kenfac Phillies 8-7 in the early game.

A’s started off with four runs in the first innings, but Phillies’ Carla Swanepoel (2/4) was having none of that and cleared the boundary cones, scoring 3 runs

in the process.

Jenna Moses (3/4) fared best with the bat for Phillies with 3 scattered singles. Phillies came back strong in their last turn at bat but with bases loaded failed to produce when it mattered most. The game was marred by both sides not able to capitalise on having runners on base with Phillies (10) and A’s (8) runners left stranded on base.

A’s took 15 hits off Ester van den Heever whilst Phillies scored nine hits off Lisa Erasmus who struck out 3 batters and gave up a 6 free bases.

Lefty, Courtney Stevens, was the pick of the A’s batting with a flawless 4/4, including a double. Former Old Mutual Cubs stalwart, Zulfah Stellenboom (3/3), and Chaunees Goliath (2/3) were the other top offensi-

Maar aan die wenkant was darem ook Durbanville, die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWK) en Tygerberg-klub, asook Noordelikes-Goodwood in ’n tweede wedstryd.

Durbanville (189/3) was bobaas in sy buurman-kragmeting teen Bellville (187/7), danksy ’n uitstekende derdepaaltjie-vennootskap van 116 lopies tussen Jean Marais (100*) en Hayes van den Berg (49), en só ook die boulwerk van Tash-
