Bella’s angels in 7th heaven Bella’s Guardian Angels Animal Rescue, previously based in Stellenberg, moved to Joostenbergvlakte at the beginning of December. The move was as a result of problems encountered at the old premises.

These included limited space and a shortage of parking. The new premises is bigger and can accommodate more cars.

Bella’s Guardian Angels Animal Rescue takes care of puppies, kittens, farm animals and wild birds. All these animals are brought in by people who rescue abandoned animals and animal welfare services.

Some of these animals come from as far as Philippi. Services offered include adoption of the puppies and kittens, birthday parties and seasonal events.

Residents are invited to visit the shelter and spend time with the animals. Pictured is Nicola Kruger, co-founder and manager of the shelter.

oodwood police have vowed to increase visibility in Anderson Street after residents raised safety concerns, comparing activity in the street to that of a taxi rank.

The street runs parallel to Goodwood train station.

A resident who requested anonymity says it’s no longer safe to walk in the area. “Prostitutes occupy the corners of the street at night. During the day, taxis are driving up and down picking up and dropping off com-

muters. During the morning peak, commuters queue in the street, standing in front of driveways to get a taxi. We need more police presence.

“The street is no longer what it used to be.

There’s too much activity and the people who live in this street are mostly elderly.

This used to be a wonderful area, but now it’s messy with crime and grime. There are often robberies as well. Taxis have been causing havoc using the street as a stop to collect commuters. It’s basically become a taxi rank,” says the resident.

Goodwood police station commander Col Sibusiso Mntambo says more patrols will be

done in the area.

“We will deploy officers for patrols in all our hot spot areas including Anderson Street especially during the night.”

The area’s community policing forum chair, John Ross, says complaints regarding Anderson Street had been discussed at a public meeting at Goodwood civic centre last year.

“All councillors, law enforcement and police attended. There were several elderly ladies who expressed their heartfelt fears for their safety. Unfortunately the manpower problem at Goodwood police station makes it extremely difficult to provide extra pa-

trols. This is left mainly to the NHW patrollers,” says Ross.

Goodwood NHW chair Leona van Wyk has offered safety tips to elderly residents who may find themselves walking in Anderson Street. “Don’t carry a big amount of cash on you. Avoid wearing jewellery and exposing your cellphone.

“Residents should carry their handbags in front of them. It’s also advisable to wear a whistle around your neck as blowing it in times of danger can attract attention.”

isabled people in Cape Town will soon have a transport service operating at optimal capacity, the City of Cape Town says.

For the service’s critics, this remains an empty promise.

Dial-a-Ride (DAR), the transport service aimed at helping those with disabilities get around, is operated by HG Travelling Services.

About 3 000 commuters are registered on the DAR database – 350 of which use the service regularly, and up to 2 270 on an ad-hoc basis.

In a statement, Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase says the City has just signed a new contract with HG Travelling Services for at least another nine months, until 30 September 2020.

DAR is partly funded by the provincial government and the City.

(“Disabled left stranded”) how local organisation The Ulwazi Project’s cerebral palsy clients were left stranded as DAR struggled to cope.

Ulwazi is hosted in the Bellville Library and relies on DAR to transport clients to and from classes. These classes are seen as a lifeline for the attendees. “(Coming to Ulwazi) is like their job,” Lydia Beets, mother of client Joseph Beets, explained. “They feel they have no purpose without it.”

In the latest statement Purchase says they have secured a bigger budget which can be used to replace and repair vehicles needed to provide the DAR service.

“Some of the vehicles may be ready within days, but in some cases, we will have to wait for parts coming from overseas.

“Be it as it may, we now have the funds and we are committed to having a full fleet of 22 vehicles operational as soon as we can,” said Purchase.

Wendal Koopman, chair of Ulwazi, says he is concerned that no actual dates are given by Purchase for when the service will im-

prove. “(Words like) ‘in due course’ and ‘as soon as possible’ means very little to the people with disabilities sitting at home.”

During the last few days, Ulwazi’s personnel tried to book seats for their members and were told they have no capacity.

Able-bodied teachers and members of the Ulwazi board have had to use their own cars to transport users.

These private cars can only transport one client at a time and in many cases, a separate car is needed for the wheelchair.

“The problem still persists and there appears to be no resolution in sight,” Koopman says.

V DAR users can report complaints to the operator’s call centre, or to the transport information centre on 0800 65 64 63.

V Eligible commuters can use the DAR service on an ad hoc basis (once-off trip) for which a booking is required each time a person wishes to make a trip.

The booking system works on a first-come-firstserved basis and can be made seven days in advance. Eligible persons can use the following number for bookings: 0800 600 895.

College sees drop in results Goodwood College has seen a significant drop in its matric pass rate for the 2019.

The Ruyterwacht school achieved a pass rate of 90.2%, down from 97.9% it obtained in 2018.

Goodwood College principal Virginia Africa says different factors contributed to the decline. “We had 112 learners register for the final exams and 11 were unsuccessful. It all boils down to work ethic and discipline.

Many learners also continued with subjects which they were struggling with. These include mathematics, accounting and life sciences. We advised these learners and parents to opt for more manageable subjects, but they continued. Extra classes were offered to learners, but not all attended.”

She says 42 learners achieved a bachelors pass, 50 achieved a diploma and nine achieved a higher certificate.

Fairbairn College obtained the highest pass rate in Goodwood at 97.2%, while President High School obtained 94.8%. JG Meiring High School achieved a 93% pass rate.

Results of the 2019 National Senior Certificate examinations are as follows: . Fairbairn College – 98.3%, . President High School – 96.2% and . JG Meiring High School – 93.8%.

Forty years of magic The College of Magic will celebrate its 40th anniversary by welcoming a new generation of aspiring magicians on Saturday 1 February.

Magic fanatics are invited to attend the beginner’s Course One at the College’s Victorian manor at 215 Imam Haron Road in Claremont every Saturday.

Course One explores the world of magic through a 15-week diploma course which includes rope magic, card tricks and coin effects as well as an introduction to the allied arts, namely juggling, mime, clowning and puppetry. The College of Magic first welcomed students on 23 February 1980. This year marks 40 years of teaching the art of magic and its allied arts, as well as life-skills to children and adults. Graduates of the institution include comedians Riaad Moosa, Stuart Taylor and Conrad Koch, actor Francis Chouler and film director Jenna Cato

Bass, as well as South African Magic Champion Olwethu Dyantyi. Founder and director David Gore is excited to welcome the next generation of students.

Over 2 000 fires since the start of summer @richardjohn_rj

ore than 2 000 vegetation fires have been doused since the start of the summer season – also known as the fire season.

This is according to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue services, who indicated that their services had responded to 2 048 vegetation fires between Sunday 1 December 2019 and Wednesday 15 January 2020.

“They were all within the boundaries of the city, covered by the 28 different fire stations,” Carelse says.

He added that no such incidents were recorded on Tygerberg Hill, which includes the Tygerberg Nature Reserve.

Cape Town has experienced very hot days over the last week with temperatures averaging 25 °C to 30 °C. Warm temperatures are said to continue well into February.

Carelse says there is a number of ways that the public can prevent wildfires. The following should be noted: . it is an offence to toss burning cigarette butts from vehicles or anywhere else; . the sale, distribution and discharge of

Decorators to learn ‘wedding’ skills The Bellville Cake Decorators Guild are hosting a wedding-themed “Day of Dems” on 7 March.

A Day of the Dems (or demonstrations) is an opportunity to see experts perform and teach a specific skill.

The day will see different demonstrators teach members and non-members to cover and stack a wedding cake.

The guild’s chair, Dewald Herbst, will show how to make edible fabric for “drapes” on the cakes. Attendees will also learn how to cut their cakes to get the most slices per person. Another demonstration will be on making “Cakesicles” which look like a mini Magnum ice-cream on a stick, but are made out of cake.

hotographer and artist Narda Rubens will exhibit at Art.b Gallery (the Arts Association of Bellville) from 29 January to 8 February this year. The solo exhibition will have two themes – Moonlight and Pypies. The gallery is housed inside Bellville library in Carl van Aswegen Street.

Born in Heidelberg in the old Transvaal in 1926, Rubens’ artistic career started when she received a box Brownie camera on her tenth birthday and fell in love with photography.

In 1999, after many years of commercial photography and teaching at various technikons, a discussion on Gaudi’s statement (“To be original you Narda Rubens have to return to the origin”), brought her back to using sunlight, but this time in a different way. She placed glass objects on a surface where the sun could shine through them from the back, expecting that it would perhaps make interesting abstract patterns, but when the light played around on the inside walls of glass, it revealed new and wonderful possibilities. To this day, Narda is still active as a photographer. “I’ve al-

ways been fascinated with light and what it could do both inside and outside of the camera, revealing and preserving moments of intense at-oneness with the wonders around.

Gaudi’s statement inspired me to use sunlight as the origin of my ‘writing with light’, allowing the light to bring the picture to me instead of me capturing the light reflected from the subject. I think that sometimes when the light is changing and I’m looking at a scene, but also into it and beyond it, there seems to be small moments when a more mysterious world shines through. Those are the moments I try to capture. I love what I do and find inspiration daily. I see myself as a photogra(93) phic explorer and do believe you have to allow your eyes to see what they see. You have to look to see what’s there – from all angles. Thinking back, I think my exploration of the orb stands out most. It signified completeness and mystery.

I’m excited to be exhibiting again, be it at the age of almost 94. I’ll always be an explorer.”

Carnival to light up the streets The 2020 edition of the Cape Town Carnival will light up the streets of the CBD on Human Rights Day, Saturday 21 March.

hen matters regarding the supply of electricity fall outside of the scope of the City of Cape Town and in the hands of national government, it compromises the ability of the City’s enterprise and investment department.

According to James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management, attracting tourism and investment is compromised as a result.

Green economy remains a viable solution to the current energy crisis, but there are many hurdles.

“These conditions and circumstances are not good for business, and I hope that the situation gets resolved soon for everyone’s sake,” he told TygerBurger last week.

To this end, Vos fully supports the City’s court application to buy renewable energy from independent power producers.

In December last year the City requested an expedited hearing on its energy case from the judge president of the Gauteng High Court.

The original hearing date is scheduled for

May 2020.

Vos said, “It is estimated that load shedding could cost the country’s economy up to R4 billion in just one day.”

“I heard from several companies that when the power is cut, so are their sales.

“Likewise, when conveyer belts come to a halt at factories, so does production output causing massive financial losses.”

In addition, electricity outages especially compromised the hospitality industry, and that resulted in job losses.

Vos engaged with hotels and guest house operators including several tourism attractions.

“The impact on our local tourism economy cannot be understated, especially when the tourism sector is responsible for thousands of jobs in Cape Town with over 1.2 million international visitors annually, resulting in approximately R15 billion in tourism revenue,” he said.

Vos said Eskom’s inefficiencies are increased by the current lack of alternative cheaper energy sources that can supply power to the national grid in a relatively shorter time.

Sokkiekaping met pryse vir skoolklere Daar kom ’n tyd in ’n mens se lewe dat jy besef jou ouers was reg oor die meeste goed.

As jy jonk is, dink jy mos jou ouers is net lastig wanneer hulle jou oor alles en nog wat aanspreek. Teen die tyd wat jy ’n tiener is begin die alewige nagging jou te irriteer.

Een van my ma se gunsteling-sêgoed was en is steeds, bly in jou nes dan bly jy ongekwes. Bedoelende as jy tuis bly, sal niks met jou gebeur nie. ’n Ander ding waaroor sy konstant moes praat is hoe ons ons klere behandel het. Moet nie op jul kouse loop nie. Hou op klippe met jul skoene skop. Daai kerrie gaan jou hemp vlek. Jy kan nie straatrugby speel met daai hemp aan nie. ’n Pen hoort nie in ’n hempsak nie.

Elke keer is ons vermaan en baie keer het ek gedink waaroor sal my ma tog so tekere gaan, dis tog net klere.

Een van haar waarskuwings was ook altyd dat ons eendag self kinders gaan hê.

Eendag het ongelukkig vir my aangebreek. Waar ek in die verlede ’n skoolsokkie net as ’n skoolsokkie gesien het, moes ek onlangs tot my groot skok besef dis meer as net dit. Of dit moet meer as dit wees, want toe my vrou by die huis kom met twee paar kouse het daar ’n vreeslike pyn deur my beursie geskiet. Die prys vir twee paar kouse is ’n allemintige R120, oftewel R60 per paar!

Omdat ek in my huis nie op die skoolgoedkomitee dien nie, gaan hierdie dinge meestal ongesiens verby. Uit die aard van die saak gee ek geld sodat die kind darem ordentlik geklee is, maar nooit het ek geweet dat ek die meeste van my ledemate betaal om dit reg te kry nie.

Toe ek hoor wat die prys van die kouse is, wou ek nie verder weet wat die ander goed kos nie. Wat ek nie weet nie, kan my nie seermaak nie.

Maar iewers in my agterkop het die buitensporige prys my gepla en ek het bietjie rondgekyk. By een winkel was die kouse meer as R40 goedkoper. Nou, ek is nie ’n kleremaker nie, maar ek laat my nie vertel dat die materiaal wat vir een paar kouse gebruik word R40 goedkoper as die ander materiaal is nie. Nooit.

Ek is ’n groot voorstander van eenvormigheid en al daardie edele dinge, maar in ’n land met soveel ongelykhede is dit ’n skreiende skande dat iets so basies soos skoolklere so duur is.

Ons almal staan verstom oor die dinge wat ons van staatskaping hoor en hoe pryse vir produkte soms tot 400% verhoog word, maar ons laat toe dat winkels wat skoolklere verkoop, met sokkiekaping wegkom.

Soos ek verstaan is daar ooreenkomste tussen skole en handelaars wat die handelaars die eksklusiewe regte gee om die skole se klere te verkoop.

Baie van dié handelaars het ryk geword uit die feit dat hulle geen kompetisie in die mark het nie.

Die kompetisie-kommissie het in ’n ondersoek bevind dat sommige skole kontrakte met verskaffers het wat uit 1974 dateer. Dit beteken dat ten minste twee generasies van skoolklere-verskaffers sonder enige mededinging geld gemaak het. Hoewel die kommissie beslis het dat baie skole onmededingende gedrag toepas, gaan hierdie praktyk voort sonder dat ’n haan daaroor kraai. En solank ouers stilbly oor hoe hulle uitgemergel word, sal daardie haan sommer nek omgedraai word.

I believe this to be a shocking state of affairs as many thousands of indigent South Africans must be affected.

Most cannot afford to pay commercial pharmacies, particularly at this time of year, therefore risk greater complications at further expense.

Vele sit met handjies oor mekaar gevou op die stoep van die tehuis en luister na mekaar se siektes en pyne en al hoogtepunt in hul lewens, is hul volgende maaltyd!

Om so ’n onproduktiewe bestaan te voer, is om jouself “dood” te verklaar, al lewe jy nog. Jou gees “verkrummel”, jou lewe raak dof en jou oë leeg ... ’n Ding waaroor ek al dikwels bespiegel het, is die name van ouetehuise. Dis gewoonlik iets soos “Avondrus” of “Aandskemer” of

Terwyl ek nog wonder wat my nou te doen staan, lui my selfoon. Die persoon stel homself voor as Ivor en gee my die goeie nuus dat hy my beursie opgetel het. Ons spreek af waar om te ontmoet en ek kry my beursie terug met die inhoud onaangeraak.

Baie dankie aan Ivor en sy vrou. Dit is mense soos julle wat ons weer laat moed skep vir ons land en sy toekoms.

Dog park a treat for furry friends I am the owner of two rescue dogs.

Homer is an absolute darling and loves everything in life including children, people, other dogs, his food etcetera.

Sally is the product of a dog fighting breeder and unfortunately only knows to fight other dogs, although she is a sweetie towards people.

Anyway, it was Homer’s turn for his annual injection on Saturday and as a treat, afterwards I took him to the Durbanville dog park in Vierlanden.

What a lovely idea this is.

We had such a great time and although there were no other dogs in the park, we spoke to and played with dogs in an adjacent garden, walked down to the dam and generally had a good time.

I really hope that the park is kept on, and if it is, I have promised Homer that I will take him there as a monthly treat.

nother finalist in TygerBurger’s Karaoke like a Star competition is making waves in the music industry.

The highly succesful competition was launched last year to give readers a chance to showcase their singing talents on a bigger stage.

Feodossia Charles, the eventual winner, has been performing all over the Western Cape and is carving out a career for herself.

Not to be left behind is Chalton Beyers, one of the ten finalists.

Beyers, who sings gospel, is hosting a gospel concert on 29 February at the Bethel Tabernacle in Kraaifontein. “I have been singing since I was five. I took the stage with my mother at a gospel show because she inspired me,” says Beyers.

Beyers says he chose gospel music because he can be himself and be honest in his performances. “I also want to convey the message of Christ. Through my music I want to tell people that there is light at the end of a dark tunnel.

When I went through difficult times in my life, music pulled me through,” says Beyers.

He says that the show, at which other artists will also perform,

will be more than a gospel show.

“It will be a worship encounter.”

Boost your home deposit savings First-time buyers are being urged to enter the property market as soon as possible because the banks are eager to lend them money, deposit requirements are low and home prices are set to start growing more quickly.

“In addition, the lenders have over the past two years become much more willing to advance so-called 100% loans for the full price of the property, and some have recently even re-introduced loans that cover the price of the property plus the additional costs of purchase such as bond registration, transfer and legal fees,” chief executive officer of BetterBond, Carl Coetzee said.

“This is of course very appealing to the young consumers who make up the bulk of first-time buyers and who really struggle to save even a 10 to 15% deposit in the current economic climate, when many of them are burdened with monthly repayments on student loans, car purchase agreements and credit and store card debt as well as rent, food and transport costs.”

However, Coetzee said that BetterBond encourages buyers to pay even a small deposit and borrow less than the total price of their home whenever possible because this will make their monthly repayments more affordable and save them a significant

amount of interest over the lifetime of their home loan.

“According to BetterBond’s latest statistics, the average home price for first-time buyers is currently R982 000, and a 10% deposit will, for example, lower the cumulative cost of such a home over the lifetime of a 20year loan by more than R227 000.”

While R98 200 is a large sum for most young buyers to save Coetzee said it is achievable, given determination and the right advice, including the following eight tried-andtested ideas for boosting savings:

Property, on the other hand, appreciates over time, so it is worth putting more effort into saving for a home than into hanging on to a fancy car that is probably also costing you a lot to insure, maintain and licence. If you are a couple with two cars, try to work out how you could live with one, and if you have one, consider downgrading to a cheaper vehicle and putting whatever you save each month into your home deposit account.

Create a home-based business and a second income People trying to save are often advised to get a second job, but actually it is better to find something you can do at home to earn extra money, so you do not waste time travelling or incur extra transport costs.

There are hundreds of options, and if you save everything you earn from these endeavours while living on your primary income, your home deposit account should grow quite rapidly.

Racing season to be kickstarted T

he aptly named Passion for Speed by G-Energy on Saturday 8 February, the first event on the Killarney International Raceway calendar, kickstarts the motorsport season with a mix of historic and modern racing to get every petrolhead’s adrenalin pumping – and if you’ve never visited Killarney, it’s an ideal introduction to the home of motorsport in the Western Cape.

Headlining the programme will the thundering Pre66/68 Sports and GT and Sports cars, beautiful big-engined beasts from the golden age of endurance racing bearing names such as McLaren, Lola and Porsche.

With entries from all over South Africa and beyond, this is international historic racing at its best.

Even more prestigious, if a little less spectacular, are Pre-65 Formula 1 racers of the international FIA Historic Grand Prix Association and the Pre-74 Historic Single Seaters, offering a fascinating glimpse of what world-class motorsport was like when Killarney International Raceway was built specifically to host the first ever Cape Grand Prix in December 1960.

Then we come bang up to date with the regional Sports and GT Cars races, featuring the ongoing David-and-Goliath rivalry between the V8 Chev-engined Maui Motorhomes Ginetta G57 and Dawie Joubert’s astonishingly agile 2.5-litre Lotus Exige. They’ll be

competing against the cream of GT3 ‘gentleman racers’ and sports cars from all over South Africa and beyond – expect fireworks.

There will also be races for the MillStock Cars Classic Cars and BEJO Trustees Fine Cars, and not one but two motorcycle categories – the closely contested RST Trac Mac Powersports and the RST Trac Mac Classic, Clubman and Breakfast Run classes.

Of special interest at this event is the traditional Fan Walk during the lunch break, when spectators are invited down onto the circuit to meet the drivers and get an upclose look at some of the international entries, cars that are rarely seen in South Africa.

Fine food and ice-cold drinks are available at the revamped, upmarket Trackside Pub and Grill, upstairs at the Clubhouse, light snacks and even colder drinks at the New Pits Lounge and the Karting Clubhouse.

Watch all the action, captured by cameras all around the circuit, as well as live timing, on TV screens on the Clubhouse Balcony and in the New Pits Lounge, then hop on the free Hyundai Shuttle and watch it live from vantage points all round the circuit.

Die fietsryers het altesame 23 medaljes ingeoes. Altesame 14 medaljes is in die tydtoets op Saterdag 11 Januarie ingesamel.

“Met ons seges het die fietsryers gewys dat harde werk altyd seëvier. Die klub se konstante goeie vertonings by die verskillende fietsrybyeenkomste is ’n bewys dat ons as ontwikkelingsklub op die regte pad is. Die ontwikkeling is veral duidelik by die jong fietsryers,” sê O’Ryan Bruintjies, voorsitter van die klub.

Volgens hom is die strukture wat in

plek is, wat betref administrasie en afrigting, die rede waarom die klub so goed doen.

“Dit is belangrik dat ons ouers betrokke bly by die kind se sport om te verseker dat ’n goeie balans tussen skoolwerk en fietsry gehandhaaf word.
