Sweden choir trip a success THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo The trip to Sweden by members of the Voce Armoniche Community Choir has been “lifechanging” Five choristers, Yaseen Valley, Yondikhapa Nojilana, Lathitha Dubula, Leigh-Ann Clarence and Emanuel Nquru attended the international choir workshops and were accompanied by choir master Christine Bam. They were invited to join Swedish group, Singing People Together, in a musical programme for a week.

Bam said the trip was lifechanging.

“Not only did our singers get to work with international groups, but they also had the opportunity to experience school in Sweden, work with the elderly and did workshops with asylum seekers,” Bam explained.

The choristers also formed part of the South African Choir, joined by members from Ijongo Primary and Joe Slovo High schools from Khayelitsha, Hector Peterson and Ceder High schools from Wallacedene and Stellenbosch.

“We sang at schools in different towns and communities and we also did workshops in different towns with all kinds of groups including elderly people and asylum seekers.

We also took part in international concerts and learnt Swedish and Haitian music,” Bam excitedly said.

She said the group was constantly told that South African performers have a lot of energy on stage.

That made them feel special and encouraged them to continue working with a soulful mindset.

“Furthermore, we learnt about the strict discipline in Sweden, but also that it is important for the whole community to get a chance to participate in music and choral activities.

“We plan to use this as a guide to further the music in our communities.”

Bam explained that the choristers were shy at first but settled in perfectly after a few hours.

“The children worked long hours every day and definitely learnt about perseverance. They were open-minded and welcoming

towards all the people we worked with.

They definitely made an impression.”

The group was pleasantly surprised when South Africans living in Sweden attended some of the performances to show their support.

Bam was thankful for Singing People Together for inviting South Africans on the trip.

Nojilana said the trip was an eye-opener as they got to experience a lot of things for the first time.

“We got to see some of the historical sites and performed on their Heritage Day where we met their mayor,” she said.

Although they had fun, she can’ forget how cold it was.

“I experienced the most piercing cold ever, that was not fun.”

Clarence said the trip was an amazing experience.

“I enjoyed interacting with other children who taught me so much about their culture.”

The trip has taught Clarence that she should always strive to expand her horizon and experience.

Terwyl die Karaoke soos ’n Ster-kompetisie weer aan die gang is, is die wenner van die eerste kompetisie besig om opgang in die musiekbedryf te maak.

Feodossia Charles van Blue Downs het met haar wonderlike stem en skitterende verhoogpersoonlikheid in Maart vanjaar die beoordelaars só beïndruk dat hulle haar as die wenner gekroon het.

Sedert haar sege was sy baie besig en het sy reeds by verskillende geleenthede opgetree.

Op Saterdag 30 November gaan sy die verhoog by die koerant Son se Jolkol in Grabouw deel. Daar gaan sy skouers skuur met bekende kunstenaars soos Early B, Loukmaan Adams en The Rockets.

FROM PAGE 1 “Because of the severity of their disability, everyone needs assistance in feeding, going to the bathroom and doing their daily tasks,” explains Evelyn Koopman, who helped start the project in 1997.

Evelyn’s daughter, Loreen, had cerebral palsy. Ulwazi saw the light because of a lack of facilities for grown-up people with cerebral palsy.

Evelyn says their aim is “to develop the fullest potential of severely disabled persons”.

They sell the arts and crafts created by the clients and use it to pay for carers and materials.

Yet, for the past three months, there has been little to no transport for their clients to and from Ulwazi.

This has had a severe effect on many clients.

Lydia Beets is the mother of Joseph Beets, who also has cerebral palsy. “(Coming to Ulwazi) is like their job,” she says. “They feel they have no purpose without it.”

Yet Joseph is one of the few lucky ones – he can still operate without a wheelchair and has been able to come on the odd occasion.

Evelyn says she tried to transport one of the 15 people herself before, but this required two cars per client – one for the disabled person and one for the wheelchair. This became too time-consuming as there aren’t that many cars going around.

Felicity Purchase, says DAR is operated by HG Travelling Services on behalf of the City. She says the service can transport approximately 2 347 passengers (approximately 7 700 trips per month) when the service operates at its optimal levels.

Asked if they were operating at reduced levels Purchase answered by saying they “currently have 13 vehicles in operation – nine DAR vehicles and two Quantum minibuses for users with other needs”.

She said they are hoping to have additional vehicles on the road within a few weeks.

Asked what disabled people without transport can do in the interim, she said DAR users do have access to the service.

She said they re-established a forum in August 2019 which addresses users’ complaints. This forum is set to meet once a month until all complaints are resolved and later once a quarter. Wendal Koopman, chair of Ulwazi, calls this a non-committal response. “It appears DAR is servicing the needs of some only,” he says.

“They do not give us definite plans (dates, numbers of vehicles) to be put in place to alleviate the issue.”

He says they call DAR repeatedly, but don’t get a response or are put through to an automated message recording service.

“If the service is operating as they say, then why is it that Ulwazi is not serviced?”

Enrico Lucas, contracts manager at HG Travelling Services, requested TygerBurger’s questions be emailed to him. By the time of going to print, he hadn’t responded yet.

he City of Town has appealed for harsher penalties when it comes to drivers license fraud as these incidents have been detected at all its traffic departments.

This follows after two men, Benito Judiao Mazive and Stambuli Twabe, pleaded guilty to fraud in the Goodwood magistrate’s court on Wednesday 13 November.

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the duo were arrested at the Goodwood traffic department on 2 May this year after producing false documentation. “The men were each fined R1 500 by the court. Unfortunately, the City has no control over the sanctions imposed by the courts, but our appeal would be for harsher penalties if we are to make a meaningful impact on this particular challenge.

Persons who end up on our roads without undergoing the prescribed driving tests and being deemed competent, are a danger not only to themselves, but other road users.”

On Saturday 9 November, staff at the At-

lantis traffic department caught a woman with a fraudulent driving license. According to Cape Town’s traffic spokesperson, Maxine Bezuidenhout, the clerk at the enquiries desk noticed that the woman’s temporary driving license she presented upon arrival appeared to be fraudulent. “She alerted management, who, upon checking the Natis system, found that the woman only had a learner’s license, despite claims that she had done her driving test at Goodwood.

“The suspect later confessed that she had paid a driving school R5 000 for the fake license.

“She was arrested and detained at Atlantis police station. The City’s Safety and Security Investigative Unit (SSIU), meanwhile, is looking into the allegations against the driving school,” said Bezuidenhout.

Smith warned if any person is caught with fake documents or number plates they will be arrested on a charge of fraud and handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution. “In the event that the person is convicted, a court of law will decide on the sentence to be imposed,” he said.

Player Faf de Klerk and his speedo became a viral sensation after meeting with Britain’s Prince Harry, after winning the Rugby World Cup, wearing nothing but his patriotic speedo.

Using his viral fame for good, the scrumhalf is collaborating with Cipla South Africa, which is based in Bellville, to challenge all men – even the Prince himself – to improve their personal “ball skills” when it comes to checking for signs of testicular cancer.

Using the tag #fafchallenge players and others alike are using social media to post Faf-inspired pictures of themselves to social media.

Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in men between the ages of 15 and 49, and if diagnosed in the early stages, the survival rate is 99%.

Despite this, the number of South African men being diagnosed with late-stage cancer

is on the rise, says Cipla.

Unlike prostate cancer (which requires a blood test or a digital rectal examination), early-stage testicular cancer can be detected through a simple self-examination.

Once a month, after a shower, check your testes for anything painful or unusual.

“An early diagnosis is the key to receiving potentially curable treatment.

“A significant impact can be made by simply increasing the awareness of self-examination among South African men,” says Cipla chief executive officer Paul Miller.

he Goodwood Neighbourhood Watch hosted their first community breakfast last week to show their gratitude for the contribution of elderly residents.

The event was held at the Goodwood Sports Club on Thursday 14 November.

Neighbourhood watch chair Leona van Wyk says the idea for the breakfast started a month ago.

Maria José, who has lived in Goodwood for 40 years, says the community breakfast was the first outing since the death of her husband in October. “I definitely needed to be at this event. After his death, I remained indoors because it was too difficult to face the reality of him not being around anymore. All I can say is thank you to the Goodwood Neighbourhood Watch for arranging this wonderful breakfast where we could mingle with our neighbours and meet new people.”

During his speech, Theunis gave the seniors safety tips: “People must remember that there are guys who make a living out of robbing our elderly people. It’s important for the elders not to create opportunities for these people to target you.

“When driving in your car, please place you valuables in the boot to avoid being a victim of a smash-and-grab. Instead of working in gardens during the week when all neighbours are at work and the street is quiet, consider doing it over weekends. Our people need to ensure their own safety as well.”

Mamas make cancer journey bearable TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji Being a cancer patient comes with its own challenges, but those challenges have become bearable all thanks to a group of mothers that are walking the path with patients.

Through the organisation Mamas Pay It Forward, cancer patients are being given an opportunity to focus on their recovery while these mothers take care of other things they need.

Started by Nicole Ludicks from Goodwood, Mamas pay it forward aims to provide care and support for those who have been suffering and impacted by cancer as well as abuse.

“We aim to provide a haven and care that exceeds providing basic needs, an organisation that’s actions are a reflection of its values, compassion and humanity.

“Our vision is to build a more conscious group of people, making them aware and understanding the impact of cancer and abuse on the individual as well as the family and furthermore the community. That change doesn’t only exist in words, but actions,” she explains.

Ludicks says cancer has a very deep impact on her life. “Losing two of my grandparents to this disease, I have personally seen the impact this has on families and the patient. I do not have experience with childhood cancer, however, I followed a story on Facebook right after the loss of my

Ludicks says the Facebook story triggered her desire to help. “I wanted to help ease the pain and support them through their grieving.

“Mamas Pay It Forward is more than an organisation to me, it is a banner of hope to those who not only are going through

this painful process, but a continuous family of unknowns, helping each other through it all,’’ she says.

Working with children and families all over Cape Town the organisation tries to do all it can to help through the resources that they get.

Talking to TygerBurger about how she feels about the work they do, Ludicks says:

“I feel very proud and honoured to have played a role in the kids lives that we have helped thus far and will continue to help in the future. And not to forget the angel warriors that have lost their battle to this dreadful disease and are now pain free in heaven watching over all of us,” she says.

To continue with the work that they do and offer a helping hand to the patients and their families, Mamas pay it forward will be hosting a fundraiser event on Saturday 30 November at the Table View Football Club from 09:00 until 17:00 and the entrance is free.

At the event there will be food stalls, children’s entertainment, and a potjie competition among other things.

Ludicks says through the fundraiser, they hope to raise the much-needed funds for them to have their annual Christmas party.

“We want to supply each family with a much-needed food parcel over the festive season and have at least one less thing to worry about. The success of this fundraiser will mean that these children or families will have a memory that will last a life time,” she says adding that despite them going through all this pain and suffering the organisation will put smiles on their faces and they will know that there are people who care about and love them.

Suid-Afrika toon duidelike vordering Die meeste beleggers is onseker wat die invloed van die volgehoue negatiwiteit en die mees onlangse mediumtermyn-begrotingsrede op hul langtermyn-beleggingstrategie behoort te hê.

Hoewel dit maklik is om meegevoer te raak deur al die negatiwiteit, is daar duidelike tekens van verbetering wat meer aandag behoort te geniet.

Ek het onlangs die voorreg gehad om na dr. Brand Pretorius (as hoofspreker) by ’n geselligheid te luister. Pretorius het ’n onbesproke bestuursrekord – eers by Toyota SA en later was hy die insolvente McCarthy Groep se legendariese sakeredding in die middel van die jare negentig.

Sy storie begin met ’n herlewing van sy eerste dag op kantoor, met vure wat figuurlik oral brand in die onderneming.

Verskaffers, aandeelhouers en werknemers het almal gemoedsrus by hul nuwe uitvoerende hoof gesoek. ’n Kernbeginsel (volgens Pretorius) vir McCarthy se omkeerstrategie was om te onderskei tussen wat belangrik (langtermyn) was teenoor wat dringend (korttermyn) was. Hierdie strategie was uiters doeltreffend, maar dit het steeds drie jaar geneem om die McCarthy-groep te red.

Indien ons na Suid-Afrika as een groot sake-eenheid kyk, dan was ons aan die begin van 2018 baie onrealisties oor hoe groot die Cyril-omkeerplan moet wees.

Hierdie plan moet ons land letterlik weer terugkry by die spreekwoordelike gelykbreekpunt.

Ek dink dit maak sin om ook hierdie omkeerstrategie in drie fases te verdeel: . Leierskapverandering en akkurate diagnose van probleme (bv. Eskom, begrotingstekorte, afgraderings). . Ontwikkeling en implementering van ’n omkeerstrategie. . Toenemende verbeterings vanaf vroeëre implementering begin momentum optel en het positiewe ekonomiese resultate tot gevolg.

Wanneer ons die individuele veranderings oor die afgelope 18 maande evalueer, is vordering duidelik te bespeur.

Fokus pres. Ramaphosa dalk eerder op die langtermyn- belangrike kwessies teenoor wat in die kort termyn dringend is, volgens die publiek?

Die ná-2017-skoonmaakpoging tot vandag sluit in agt kabinetskuiwe, nuwe uitvoerende leierskap by feitlik alle staatsbeheerde liggame, leierskapbestuursveranderings by ’n verskeidenheid provinsiale en munisipale kantore, nuwe leierskap by die Openbare Beleggingskorporasie, nuwe hoofde by die polisie, die Nasionale Vervolgingsgesag, die Staatsekuriteitsagentskap, die Gespesialiseerde Kommersiële Misdaadeenheid, die Valke en Misdaad-intelligensie, asook ’n deeglike Zondo-kommissie en voortgaande ondersoek na VBS Bank en beleggingsbeloftes van RSA-grootsake van ongeveer R600 miljard (Rapport, 10 November 2019).

Addisionele helpende kragte vir SuidAfrika sluit in volgehoue vrye joernalistiek (onder Sanef/MMA) en ons onafhanklike regbank, ’n nuwe ekonomiese adviesforum, ’n nuwe kleinsakeminister en ’n langverwagte kleinsake-adviesraad, ’n spesiale tribunaal om staatskapingsgeld te herwin, ’n teenkorrupsieforum en Richard Branson se belangstelling in die SAL. Suid-Afrika benodig tans dat alle Suid-Afrikaners aktief deelneem aan positiewe gesprekke oor die positiewe veranderings in die land.

Pretorius en sy bestuurspan skryf ’n groot deel van hul sukses toe aan hul keuse van “doelgerigte optimisme” ten alle tye. Bekwaamheid, integriteit en harde werk was al dikwels in die verlede ’n onstuitbare kombinasie.

Zig Ziglar het gesê “attitude determines altitude”. Suid-Afrika toon duidelike vordering, maar gee ons as beleggers die land ’n regverdige kans op herstel in ons beleggingsgesprekke?

Service was outstanding I am writing this letter to you to commend the fire department and the ambulance service for their very professional, pleasant and efficient service.

On Wednesday, I had to call in for emergency help. I got home at about 12:45 to find my partner unconscious.

A friend of mine told me to phone the fire services as they are good. I phoned them at 13:51 requesting assistance. They responded rather quickly in a fire engine and shortly thereafter the smaller vehicle (EMS) arrived and attended to my partner. One vehicle came from Durbanville and the other from Goodwood. The chaps (F Malenza, Jacques le Roux and Riaan Hyman and the rest of the team) were absolutely outstanding. They had requested the ambulance and the ambulance arrived at 14:47.

The lady medic or driver, C Mias, was so friendly, polite and efficient too, even when I nearly fainted in the ambulance!

I was so distraught and upset I did not pay attention to the number of the ambulance and the names of the firemen, but I saw a photo of them in the TygerBurger (how fortunate for me).

I really must compliment the fire services and the ambulance services for their superb, efficient and friendly service. Everyone is so quick to condemn them, but really any interaction I have had with these firemen has been superb. They have been at my complex before and were also so friendly.

Please pass this on to whoever is in charge of these fabulous chaps and the lovely lady, C Mias.

will definitely call on the fire services again should I need assistance (please never again).

Life begins at conception I share my concern with the negative sentiment of Layaa Trevor regarding the way many “men in our society think of women” in her letter, “Abortions: get your facts straight” (TygerBurger 6 November).

The boys and young men I work with around southern and central Africa are being taught to honour, respect and protect women.

Many have been misled by our state propaganda regarding the stages and conditions when abortions are legally allowed to take place.

The Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act clearly allows abortion “after the 20th week of the gestation period” if two medical practitioners “are of the opinion that the continued pregnancy – (i) would endanger the woman’s life; (ii) would result in a severe malformation of the foetus; or (iii) would pose a risk of injury to the foetus”.

With no time limit “after the 20th week of the gestation period”, an abortion 24 hours before labour is legally possible.

On Layaa’s second point: consenting children will not be criminally charged if they have sex while both are “a person 12 years or older but under the age of 16 years”.

So, a 12-year-old can legally have an abortion, without parental consent, with no rape having taken place.

Layaa clearly only wants her view on abortion protected; my thoughts on the issue are “ignorant”. Whatever happened to freedom of

speech? Do we now only allow state-sanctioned speech to hospital patients?

Layaa doesn’t want to be told what she “should and should not do with her body”.

We have no right to murder another – life begins at conception and the baby’s body is not the mother’s body – how can it be with different body parts, heart, blood group, sex etcetera?

The problem is the big sharp stones Everybody seems to be under the wrong impression regarding the stones on the pavement.

The complaint is not about the normal small stones on pavements.

The stones in question are those big sharp blue rocks that are placed on many street corners.

We tend to think only of ourselves In response to “Please think before you ‘scream’ ” by Rob from Bothasig (TygerBurger 13 November), I believe that if residents make provision for a walkway (cement slabs maybe) for pedestrians passing an affected property, there will be less criticism for the stones.

All too often I think we tend to think only of ourselves and not also of our fellow man. With a R22 000 spend I would have thought that a walkway could have been accommodated.

Customs duty fees are ridiculous I refer to the letter (“Do they pay the same import tax?”

TygerBurger 6 November) and I agree with this person 100%.

Everything Fedup has mentioned is exactly what I have experienced.

The tax we as the man on the street has to pay is ridiculous.

For instance, recently my aunt in the United Kingdom (UK) bought an Irish flat cap as a present for me for the approximate amount of R500.

In all the shipping papers she mentioned that it was a gift.

When the cap arrived in South Africa the couriers informed me that I would have to pay customs duty of R488 – cost of cap R500.

I actually queried the fact whether importers of containers full of clothes pay the amount on each sports cap that has been imported.

Op Vrydag 1 November tussen ongeveer 15:00 en 16:00 was ek op pad om iemand naby die taxi-staanplek op te laai – wat ’n nagmerrie!

Die een beampte het die verkeer in beide rigtings gestop dat ek ’n U-draai terug na Voortrekkerweg kon maak.

Nog steeds onseker oor waar die persoon wag, het die ander beampte my gevra om hom in sy voertuig te volg.

Hy het gewag tot ons veilig was en die pad na Durbanville kon neem. Baie dankie aan twee omgee- en hulpvaardige beamptes.

‘Store’ for the homeless needs donations T

he annual Pop-Up Street Store for the homeless needs your help.

With the event, organised by the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), the goal is to give those who have little, donated clothing while also retaining their dignity and power to choose.

The homeless will be invited to “shop” from clothes that are clean, sized and well presented. Each person gets to choose three items.

The event will take place on 10 December at the corner of Durban Road and Voortrekker Road, Bellville. The GTP calls on the public

to donate previously used clothing and shoes, and even new or partially used toiletries for the store.

The GTP’s collection target is 1 000kg of clothes.

Ander, soos die klein 18 maande oue Kiara Jansen van Eersterivier, het egter ’n operasie aan haar regterarm ondergaan. Kiara is met twee bykomende vingers gebore.

Een van die vingers is in Junie verwyder en die tweede verlede Dinsdagmiddag.

Die reeks operasies vorm deel van die jaarlikse Smile-stigting se Smile-week by die Tygerberg-hospitaal. ’n Soortgelyke week word ook jaarliks by die Rooi Kruis-kinderhospitaal in Rondebosch gehou. Die projek maak voorsiening vir gratis noodsaaklike operasies vir kinders.

Vir Kiara se ma, Chantel Jansen, is die operasie ’n seëning.

“Met haar geboorte het ons opgemerk dat sy 12 vingers het pleks van 10. Ek het aanvanklik nie geweet wat om te doen nie. Dis glo ’n seldsame verskynsel.

“Ons het die dokters daarvan ingelig en hulle het voorgestel dat ons dit vroeg verwyder, nog voordat sy skool toe gaan. Ons het gevrees dat sy op skool daaroor gespot sal word.

“Die hospitaal het ons ingelig oor die Smile-stigting en die werk wat hy doen. Ons het besluit om dit te laat verwyder,” sê Chantel.

Luchain, die dogter van Louise Snyers, ’n ma van Piketberg, is ook gedurende die Smile-stigting se Smile-week in die Tygerberg-hospitaal behandel.

Nkumbuzo Nkonyana van Reach for a Dream het die kinders vermaak terwyl hulle vir hul operasies gewag het.

Sy sê die verwydering van die eerste vinger was ’n sukses.

Daar is geen letsels agtergelaat nie buiten ’n klein, donker merkie op die vel.

Die tweede vinger is op Dinsdag 12 November verwyder. Die ma en dogter het in die hospitaal oornag net om seker te maak dat Kiara wel 100% gesond is. Hulle is die Woensdag ontslaan.

“Sy vaar baie beter. Die operasie was ’n sukses.

“Ek glo dat alles vir haar sal uitwerk. Dis alles te danke aan die vriendelike dokters, die verpleegsters en die res van die personeel by die hospitaal.

“Ons is ook dankbaar teenoor die Smilestigting en Vodacom wat die projek aanbied,” sê Chantel, ’n ma van vier.

Louise Snyers, ’n ma van Piketberg, se dogter, Luchain, sê sy is ewe dankbaar vir die gebaar.

Luchain (15 maande) is met ’n gesplete verhemelte gebore.

“Aan die begin was dit moeilik. Sy het gesukkel om te eet en om haar bottel te drink. Ons moes haar bottel eintlik aanpas, maar soos sy groter geword het, het

dinge beter begin raak.”

Louise sê as ’n werklose ma is sy dankbaar dat die operasies niks gekos het nie. “Ek is baie bly.”

Nog ’n ouer, Lainese Engelbrecht, se 11 maande oue seun, Zyke, is ook vir ’n gesplete verhemelte geopereer.

“Ek is dankbaar vir die stigting en die maatskappy wat die operasies moontlik maak.

“Net die feit dat hy makliker sal kan praat, maak my dankbaar. Hy sukkel op die oomblik daarmee,” vertel dié Bolandse ma.

Wendy Canterbury, streekkoördineerder van die Smile-stigting, sê die kinders het elk ’n rugsak ontvang, gevul met geskenke.

‘Frozen fun’ this festive season With school holidays around the corner and the festive season fast approaching, there are loads of activities to keep children occupied.

‘I am different, not less’ – disabled leader DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

G

rowing up disabled in the ’70s and ’80s, Karin Smit knows what it is to be sidelined.

But being a rebel at heart, she did not allow society’s attitude to stifle her dreams – instead she became a champion for the disabled.

Karin was only a toddler when she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and at age 13, had undergone a bilateral hip replacement. The Princess Alice Orthopaedic Hospital in Cape Town became her second home and pain was part of her everyday life.

Growing up she was constantly reminded of what she could not do – “matric has no use for you; you won’t be able to find a job, no man will ever love you” and most heartbreaking, “you’ll never be able to have children”.

“As a disabled person I was led to believe that love and marriage was a taboo for me.

I was not seen as a whole woman.”

Today Karin is the principal specialist for specific needs at Vodacom, married to the love of her life for 25 years, and mother to a healthy 17-year-old daughter Kelly.

“Thank God, I didn’t believe what I was expected to believe,” she said in a poignant talk about her struggles at the fourth annual

Karin completed matric at a mainstream school, and ten years later, earned a degree in social work. She met her husband during her third year at university.

“Many myths exist around hiring disabled people, but the truth is disabled people are the most loyal people you can imagine.”

Karin firmly believes that disability is as much a part of the country’s diversity as race, gender and religion are.

Battling to find a job, she started a recruitment agency, finding employment for disabled persons. “Of course I was told by many companies that they are doing me a ‘favour’ by hiring disabled candidates, and most of the time did not pay my fees.”

When she landed her first paying job in her thirties, it was at the telecommunication giant’s call centre. “This was like taking one step forward and ten steps back,” she says.

But it was the opportunity she needed to rise to the influential position she fills today.

Karin is currently completing her PhD in digital inclusion and in 2014 established the Women’s Network for Disability called WAND where she has empowered more than 300 girls with disabilities in special schools in Cape Town.

Having Kelly, she says, remains her biggest life accomplishment. Kelly means “fighter”, and born at 28 weeks weighing only 1kg, her battle was laid out for her.

“It wasn’t easy, and we almost didn’t make it, but I pursued my dream,” she reflects.

Her message to the disabled is significant: “You are different, not less. Don’t let anyone steal your dreams, ignore the naysayers and be kind.”

Karin’s philosophy encapsulates hard work and perspective, that leaves no place for self-pity. “Guess what. Life is bloody unfair and the sooner you let go of things you can’t control, the better. Get up and do what you need to do.”

Touching the Heart of society In five years, Brackenfell-based non-profit organisation (NPO) Daniel and Friends Fund has changed the way in which society views the disabled, or “differentlyabled”, as they coined the phrase.

Along with I am Special Ministries, a Durbanville-based upliftment and educational ministry, they established the Touching the Heart initiative.

“The Touching the Heart initiative is a project which hopes to create an awareness within society of the challenges and adversity which hinder the lives of disabled and medically-fragile children, as well as the loved ones who care for them,” explains Daniel and Friends Fund director Lianie le Roux.

Their vision is captured in emotionally gripping photographs by Brackenfell photographer Candice Rodriques in a one-ofa-kind coffee table book, published two years ago.

The fund was launched by Le Roux and Kate Laurie in January 2014 with the support of paediatrician Prof Pieter Fourie after their children passed away a week apart from one another. Michelle Philips joined as a director.

The fund provides a broad spectrum of support to almost 160 families city-wide which include, emotional and psychological wellbeing of the entire family and where possible financial assistance.

I Am Special Ministries, founded by Luani Oosthuizen, dedicates itself to equipping children in predominantly underprivileged communities with fundamental skills in self-confidence and empowerment.

Volgens Stephan Myburgh, die klub se voorsitter, was dit ’n glansgeleentheid met ’n maskerbaltema.

“Die klublede het omtrent geskitter in

he inaugural South African Jazz and Classical Encounters Festival at Spier showcasing some of the best South African jazz and classical artists takes place on Saturday 23 November. Gates open at 13:00.

The Kyle Shepherd Trio with Shepherd on piano, Shane Cooper on double bass and Jonno Sweetman on drums will open the one-day festival at 14:00 with some of the originals from the repertoire expertly assembled over the last decade.

Jazz will be alternating with classics.

The Night Light Collective brings an eclectic mix of original works by each of the group members, woven together and bookended by an arrangement Matthijs van Dijk did of the song “Down To The River To Pray”. In blending jazz, free improvisation and contemporary art music elements, they will play on traditional classical instruments, such as the violin, double bass and piano, traditional southern Afri-

can instruments such as the nyunga nyunga and umrhube bow, and electric guitar.

Next up will be Afrika Grooves with The Tune Recreation Committee, featuring two Standard Bank Young Artists of the Year winners, Afrika Mkhize (2012) and Mandla Mlangeni (2019).

They will be performing music from their 2019 Sama nominated Best Jazz Album: Afrika Grooves With The Tune Recreation Committee.

This multi-faceted presentation focuses on collaboration and musical exchange.

Violinist and composer Jan-Hendrik Harley’s ensemble, Je ne Comprends Pas, takes to the stage next, with Liesl Stoltz (flute), Visser Liebenberg (clarinet), Dave Thompson (trumpet), Gene Kierman (French horn, Nick Green (trombone), Frank Mallows (percussion), Nina Schumann (piano), Annien Shaw (violin), Petrus Coetzee (viola), David Pinoit (cello) and Marichen Meyer (double bass).

Harley loves the idea of this festival, “for it is a meeting place where I can hear the music ideas of the others, unadulterated by the commercial elements often associated with such meetings.

“We have something quite fundamental in common: regardless of our genre, we have something to say. And we all chose to say it with music”. Five of Harley’s compositions will be performed, four of them world premieres and the fifth, “Vlinder”, a revival. They are Residue for vibraphone and strings, Geometries for winds, brass and piano, Divisions for clarinet, brass, percussion and strings, and Suite No. 1, written for the whole ensemble.

Mandisi Dyantyis, trumpeter and vocalist, will be ending off the show.

The amphitheatre at Spier provides the ideal venue for the showcase with several outlets for casual dining, or pre-booked picnics.

Fifty years of festive lights celebrated A star-studded line-up will perform at the 50th annual switching on of the festive lights on Sunday 1 December at the Grand Parade.

Heroes keep marching on, in bronze TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

T

he Long March to Freedom, a procession of 100 life-sized bronze statues and the largest exhibition of its kind, opened at Century City on Friday 15 November.

The artworks depict South African and international icons, some famous and others unknown, and tells the story of the country’s struggle for freedom. The Long March to Freedom is developed, owned and operated by the National Heritage Project, a non-profit company.

Stuurman Brothers; to proud Xhosa and Zulu Kings, Maqoma, Shaka and Dingaan; to struggle veterans, Helen Suzman, Oliver Tambo, Albert Luthuli, and international leaders such as Haile Selassi and Martin Luther King Junior, the procession is a statement of pride in the country’s diverse history and cultures.

Next to each statue is a brief description and a did you know fact.

Sarah Haines, project director says this is a celebration of people that fought for South Africa. Speaking about the launch, Haines says it was wonderful. “Guests were blown away. Some had only seen the photos but to see these statues and stand in the middle of them was very emotional. A tour through the procession is an immersive and moving experience as visitors connect with the lives of the people so vividly created in bronze,” she says.

The project is a concept by Dali Tambo and Haines says when he told her about this idea, she didn’t think they could pull it off.

“The more we talked about it the more I believed in it. We had to find funding and the first 18 statues were exhibited at the ANC rally in Mangaung in 2012,” she says.

From there the statues have increased bit by bit. Haines has no doubt that the statues are an incredible learning experience. “Over the past nine years, since the project’s inception, the Long March to Freedom has enriched the lives of many 1000s of people, from those who worked or were trained on the project, to the school children who have never before had the opportunity to fully experience their own history and heritage, and the domestic and foreign tourists who laud

Their hope is that learners take full advantage of this exhibition. “In the new year we will have educational programmes for learners. We will have a dedicated type of class-

The exhibition will be open to the public daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Special entrance fees from opening until end of February 2020 are at R70 for adults and R50 for children under 12.

housands of runners from across the Cape and the broader South Africa will descend on the Rocklands Sports Field for the start of the 2019 JP21 Mitchell’s Plain Titans race on Saturday 23 November.

With its start line just outside Glendale High School, the race will take runners on a scenic route around the coastline before heading back to the sports field where families, communities and runners will meet in a festive atmosphere in the spirit of community building.

Online entries closed on Sunday 17 November but manual entries remain open on race day and Friday 22 November.

Come Saturday, a hive of excitement awaits the avid and professional runners alike who come from far and wide to enjoy the race. The race forms part of the Coca-Cola League.

For the 12th consecutive year, the race will consist of a 5km, a 10km and a 21.1km race open to all ages.

Partners include the City of Cape Town, African Bank, Community Chest and PPC. TygerBurger’s sister publication, People’s

Post, is the official print media partner.

Run or walk the various routes to see and learn more about the vibrancy and culture of Mitchell’s Plain.

Entry fees are R110 for licenced and R170 for unlicenced runners in the 21.1km race.

Adults in the 10km race pay R70 licenced and R110 unlicenced, while juniors in the 10km pay R50 if licenced and R75 if unlicenced.

Entry to the 5km fun run is R20.

Race-day entries, race card and number collections will take place on Friday 22 November from 18:00 to 20:00 and on race day at 04:30 at Glendale. The 21.1km race will start at 06:00 with a cut-off time of three hours and 30 minutes. The 10km race will start at 06:15 with a cut-off time of two hours and the 5km race will start at 07:30.

All finishers will receive medals.

There will be ample secure parking, however, runners and spectators are urged to arrive early to avoid traffic.

Last year’s 21.1km men’s winner, Elroy Galant.

Brackenfell duo take home medals Brackenfell Shotokan Karate recently had their KSA Cape Town Karate Championships at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology Sport Centre.

More than 50 karateka of all ages and grades from various federations participate in an invigorating and highly intensive training session with former World and European Team Kumite Champion, Sensei George Best.

Best seminar wows local karateka Former World and European team kumite champion, Sensei George Best, was invited by United Shotokan-Ryu to conduct three seminars in South Africa.

The purpose of these seminars was to provide South African Karateka with the opportunity to experience high-level training with one of the world’s most-respected kumite (fighting) practitioners and coaches. The first seminar was held in Kempton Park, while the second seminar took place in Makhanda (previously Grahamstown). The third and final seminar was held in Brackenfell.

The Brackenfell seminar saw more than 50 karateka of all ages and grades from various federations participate in an invigorating and highly intensive training session.

While Best cut a somewhat imposing figure in his karate gi, his excellent teaching skills and rapport with the participants ensured that the seminar was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance.

Best hails from Manchester, where he is a full-time karate instructor and head of Hasha Karate Great Britain.

He was first selected to train with the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) junior and senior squads at the tender age of 13. During this time, he trained regularly with some of the most ferocious karate fighters in the world. As daunting as this was, his persistence and resolve paid dividends, when at the age of 16, he made his debut as a senior in an international

event in 1984.

During his distinguished career he assisted England and Team Great Britain in winning the European Team Kumite Championships on five occasions, and the World Championships twice, making them one of the most successful karate nations in the World.

Best’s passion for his art is infectious, and although the seminars were gruelling, his encouraging, humble and gentle manner inspired and motivated the participants to give of their very best right up until the final exercises and drills were completed.

United Shotokan-Ryu chair, Gary Grapentin, has already been in discussions with Best regarding a follow-up seminar in the future.

Best’s South African seminar marks the third international instructor seminar which United Shotokan-Ryu has successfully hosted in South Africa during the past 12 months.

Previous international guest instructors include Sensei Pascal Lecourt (France) and Sensei André Bertel (Japan). United Shotokan-Ryu seminars are open to all instructors and karateka irrespective of style, affiliation or association.

For many local karate athletes and spectators, this prestigious championship has become very popular and testing the best against each other.

There were 426 entries from 24 clubs who contested this year’s championship in categories ranging from children to veterans, representing all styles of Shotokan-Ryu, Goju-Ryu, ShitoRyu and Shorin-Ryu. South Africa’s best and some that are in the South Africa’s national team also showcased their skills, the categories were extremely competitive with a number of exceptional athletes in the senior categories. SPAR CHALLENGE: SA PROTEAS VS ENGLISH ROSES

outh Africans still basking in the euphoria of the Springboks’ stunning 32-12 victory over the England Roses in the final of the Rugby World Cup in Japan have another enticing sporting encounter to look forward to – the three-Test SPAR Challenge Netball Series between the SPAR Proteas and the England Roses in Cape Town at the end of the month.

The Proteas won South African hearts with their outstanding performance in the Netball World Cup in Liverpool earlier this year. It was their most successful World Cup campaign since 1995, when they won the silver medal and their dazzling exploits on the court put netball on the map in South Africa. They reached the bronze medal play-off, only to lose to the hosts and Commonwealth Games champions, the England Roses.

Now netball enthusiasts will be able to see them in action at home, in the city that will host the 2023 Netball World Cup.

The three Tests will be played at the Bellville Velodrome on Friday November 29, Saturday November 30 and Sunday December 1.

It will be an interesting encounter as both teams have new coaches, who will be put to the test in this series.

England are currently ranked

third in the world and South Africa are ranked fifth.

The Proteas and the Roses have met 58 times in all, with England winning 44 Tests and South Africa 14. In the last six matches between the two teams, England have won four and South Africa two, but the matches have all been close, hardfought affairs. The players with the most caps against the Roses are captain Bongi Msomi, recently retired Maryke Holtzhausen and Karla Pretorius, who was named Player of the Tournament at the World Cup in Liverpool.
