Joy over new bus TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07 Love comes in all shapes and sizes. And at De Vrije Zee Primary School in Goodwood love came in the shape of a minibus – its first one in 85 years.

School principal Maria Da Conceicao says the decision to purchase a 16-seater was

birthed last year.

“Last year was the school’s 85th birthday.

As part of celebrations, the School Governing Body (SGB) decided that it was time to purchase a minibus as we have never had our own.

“The purpose of the bus is for teachers and learners to travel to sports matches. Those who struggle to get transport to school

sports may also make use of it,” says Da Conceicao.

She says in the past it was costly to hire buses to transport learners.

“This was a long-term project which was made possible by hosting various fundraisers such as civvies days. Last year our learners were very excited at the prospect of getting a bus. Parents approved the pur-

chase at a budget meeting,” explains Da Conceicao. “We are really proud of this accomplishment and support we received.

“All we want is for the learners to benefit from this.”

According to SGB chairperson David Assur, the purchase of a minibus is a historic moment for the school.

City prepares for energy purchases from IPPs Mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, on Friday cautiously welcomed the firmest commitment to date given by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his State of the Nation address that would enable municipalities to buy energy from independent producers (IPPs) in future.

“However, urgent clarity is required from national government on the legal and regulatory nuts and bolts of how this must happen,” Plato said in a statement.

“The City has been putting pressure on national government for many years to reshape the energy regime in South Africa to the benefit of our people and businesses.

Now we need urgent clarity from national government on the roles and responsibilities for municipalities and other stakeholders in terms of the New Generation Capacity Regulations in the Electricity Regulation Act,” he stated.

This is an important case for all stakeholders in the energy sector as legal clarification is required for the future purchase from IPPs to become a reality.

Plato clarified the following questions.

ons. We are working with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research about the production of such an IRP. We are also working with the Western Cape Government and GreenCape to look at several game changers that, from an energy perspective, will greatly contribute to energy security of supply and ensure a transition to a lower carbon future. For the supply side, we would consider all available and acceptable options at different stages of our future procurement. In principle, we’d look more toward renewable energy technologies that support a transition to a lower carbon future.

What needs to happen for a new energy future to become a reality?

The current Electricity Regulation Act is the contentious act that allows the national minister of mineral resources and energy to prescribe the amount and type of new generation. We have contended that it is the City’s constitutional mandate to provide power to its customers, allowing those customers to choose the type of power they receive.

The current National Integrated Resource Plan and the issuing of a ministerial determination in favour of the municipalities will assist.

The court case, set to be heard in May

2020, will ask the court for a declaratory order that sets aside the status quo and clarifies the legal responsibilities and parameters required for the power, so to speak, to be put back in the hands of municipalities.

What could the energy mix be in future?

The City-developed IRP will define this and will be in line with the City’s Integrated Development Plan and international commitments such as carbon neutrality of buildings by 2050.

When could we start actually seeing procurement happening?

It depends on the legal clarification and also the lead time to construction varies by technology type. At a minimum, if the decision is favourable, it will bring new power plants on line in three years’ time.

What are we working on in terms of energy equality for lower income households in terms of renewables?

We are undertaking a study to determine how best to overcome energy poverty, through various projects such as installing solar kits, solar home systems, increasing free basic electricity, improving access to gas, among others. Improving access to affordable electricity is a key deliverable that we are investigating at the moment.

There has been no death due to the coronavirus at any hospital in the Western Cape, despite rumours telling otherwise.

A tweet by a user claiming someone died at Louis Leipoldt in Bellville sent waves of fear over the internet last week. The novel coronavirus was given the official name COVID-19 last week. The tweet by user @marksmit222 said: “My good friend’s colleague, Steve Gouws, working at international Chinese company, ZTE, Cape Town, South Africa died at 1pm today after being exposed to another colleague who returned from China last week. Hospital refused to say coronavirus. They claim it’s swine flu (sic)”. He later said Gouws died at Bellville’s

Louis Leipoldt hospital. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), ZTE South Africa and Mediclinic have all denied that any patient has tested positive for the coronavirus. Jessica King, public relations manager at ZTE South Africa, has however confirmed the death of a contractor in their Cape Town office. She called Smit’s allegations “misleading, disrespectful to the family and totally unsubstantiated”.

The colleague mentioned in the post who supposedly brought the virus from China has recovered from his own illness and hasn’t been out of South Africa, she said.

Gouws was on a private cruise ship and not on ZTE business when he became ill, she added. “Any link to the coronavirus is false and we can only assume anyone still repor-

ting on this is purposefully attempting to sow unnecessary panic.”

NICD communications manager Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said they noted Smit’s tweets. “We would like to ask the public to disregard rumours of this nature and discourage the spreading of false information.

Should there be a positive case, official information will be communicated by the national Department of Health, the WHO and the NICD. Mediclinic also confirmed they had no cases of the virus. “We would like to provide the reassurance that, in strict accordance with NICD and national Department of Health protocols, Mediclinic has implemented the necessary measures to manage any patients presenting with symptoms and to prevent the potential transmission of the virus in our facilities.”

by Nailah gediagnoseer. Sy het behandeling ontvang en leef vandag ’n normale lewe, sê haar ouers. Die gesin is van Scottsdene in Kraaifontein.

ir die meeste ouers is die nuus dat jou kind aan kanker ly hartverskeurend.

Die meeste mense voel hulpeloos, maar sommige meen egter dat die ondersteuning wat hulle van familie en vriende ontvang ’n mens soms deur dié donker tonnel kan dra.

Vir die Humphrey-gesin van Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, is dit ’n werklikheid. Hul dogter, Nailah (14), was net 11 maande oud toe hulle meegedeel is dat hul eersteling aan Neoroblastoma-kanker ly.

Die gesin was verlede week gaste by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, waar Internasionale Kinderkankerdag herdenk is. ’n Spesiale geleentheid is gereël deur die Tygerberg-hospitaal se Kinderfonds en Kinderkanker-stigting van Suid-Afrika (CHOC).

“As baba is sy bedags deur haar ouma omgesien. Haar ouma het agtergekom dat iets nie reg is nie. Ons het haar toe na die dokter geneem,” vertel Nicolene (36), haar ma.

Haar pa, Steve (44), onthou ook Nailah het destyds baie gebraak. “Die proses het begin en daar is sonars en skanderings gedoen.

Ons het besef sy het kanker,” sê hy.

Nailah, ’n graad 9-leerder aan die Hoërskool Brackenfell, het chemoterapie ontvang en ’n operasie ondergaan om haar regternier te verwyder. Sy het nog vyf jaar lank as buitepasiënt vir toetse na die Tygerberghospitaal gegaan.

Eers rondom die ouderdom van ses jaar het sy heeltemal normaal begin leef.

“Tot en met daardie tyd het sy nog gereeld vir hospitaalbesoeke gegaan,” vertel haar pa. Sedertdien besoek sy net die nierkliniek.

“Dit was ’n moeilike tyd vir ons as gesin.

Jy moet sterk wees. Sy was nog net ’n baba.

“Ons moes vir berading gaan omdat ons nie presies geweet het wat die proses behels nie. Ons was jonk getroud, maar ons familie het ons ondersteun. Die ondersteuning by die werk was ook oorweldigend.

“Ons het gebid en ons is dankbaar dat ons

vandag hier kan staan,” sê Nicolene.

Lizaan Hendricks, ’n inwoner van Our Pride in Eersterivier, ontvang ook ondersteuning van haar ma nadat kanker by haar 2-jarige baba, Renesmee, gediagnoseer is.

Sy en haar dogter was ook gaste by die geleentheid verlede Vrydagoggend by die hospitaal.

Renesmee is in Januarie 2019 gediagnoseer. “Sy het blou merke ontwikkel, haar maag het konstant gewerk, sy was alewig koorsig en het baie gebraak.

“Ek het haar na die kliniek geneem en hulle het eers gesê sy was net siek, en dat die blou merke net kneusmerke is.

“Ná ’n besoek aan die Eersterivier-hospitaal is ons egter na Tygerberg verwys, waar die dokters toetse uitgevoer het. Sy is op 25 Januarie verlede jaar gediagnoseer,” vertel Lizaan.

Sy was geskok toe die dokters dié nuus met haar deel. “Ek het gedog my kind gaan sterf. Ek het nie geweet dat kinders ook kanker kon kry nie.

“Ek was bewus van chemoterapie en het geweet wat dit aan ’n mens doen omdat my

oupa daardeur moes gaan. Renesmee was egter baie sterk. Sy is ’n vegtertjie,” sê Lizaan.

Dié enkelma moes haar werk los om na haar dogter om te sien. Sy word egter ondersteun deur haar ma wat werk. Sy ontvang ook ’n afhanklikheidstoelaag waarmee sy Renesmee onderhou.

“Ek is positief oor haar vordering. Sy vorder baie goed. Sy is tans in remissie.”

Prof. Mariana Kruger, ’n pediatriese onkoloog en hoof van pediatriese en kindergesondheid by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, het by die geleentheid gesê hulle is verheug om hul pasiënte te kan genees.

Kankerdag gevier Internasionale Kinderkankerdag is verlede Saterdag 15 Februarie herdenk.

Volgens Laticia Pienaar, woordvoerder van die Tygerberg-hospitaal, kan kanker by kinders genees word, mits dit vroegtydig gediagnoseer word en daar toegang is tot die vereiste fasiliteite en toerusting om optimale gesondheidsorg te verseker.

Van die tekens waarvoor ouers en voogde moet uitkyk by kinders sluit in abnormale bloei, abnormale swelling en wit merke op die oog, onverklaarbare koors, gewigsverlies, pyn, hoofpyn, braking en moegheid.

Die Tygerberg-hospitaal samel tans geld in vir die modernisering van sy pediatriese onkologie-eenheid met behulp van Tygerberg-hospitaal se Kindertrust.

Sedert 2014 is daar ’n toename in kinders by wie kanker gediagnoseer word.

Lizaan Hendricks, ’n inwoner van Our Pride in Eersterivier, is hier met haar dogter Renesmee, by wie verlede jaar kanker gediagnoseer is. Sy ontvang nog behandeling. Die ma en dogter het verlede week ’n geleentheid by die Tygerberg-hospitaal bygewoon om Internasionale Kinderkankerdag te herdenk.

Fundraising four-ball for two charities Rachel’s Wishes and Reach for a Dream are joining forces to host a charity four-ball golf day at the Durbanville Golf Club on Friday 3 April.

Their aim is to raise funds to fulfil the dreams of children and create their perfect dream day.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation has brought hope, joy and healing to the children’s wards of South African hospitals for 30 years.

However, the organisation rely heavily on events such as this to ensure that each of these dream days are as special and tailor-made as possible.

Rachel’s Wishes is also a registered non-profitable organisation which was started in memory of Rachel Adcock, who died when she was three years old.

“Our golf day will provide

each participating player with a fun-filled day of camaraderie and charity. In order to ensure that this day is a roaring success, we invite you to support us by taking part or sponsoring us,” said Christine Adcock, founder of Rachel’s Wishes.

The cost of a four-ball is R2 600, including a prizegiving supper and auction.

Dit is weer tyd vir die Downsindroom-vereniging van die WesKaap (DSAWC) se jaarlikse fietstoer na George.

Vanjaar wil die span probeer om R65 000 in te samel en daardeur sy vorige rekord verbeter.

Die fietstoer het in 2000 begin toe lede van die Mountain Viewfietsryklub besluit het om op ’n unieke manier geld vir ’n organisasie in te samel, vertel Jones Strydom, een van die stigters van die toer.

Die klub bestaan uit werknemers van Korrektiewe Dienste, wat onder meer in Goodwood en in Bellville gestasioneer is.

Tot in daardie stadium het hulle ten bate van die Paarlskool in Brackenfell fietsgery, maar die skool het destyds weens logistieke redes voorgestel hulle pak eerder die fietstoer namens ’n ander organisasie aan.

Toe die speke eers vir die DSAWC begin sing, was dit amper asof dit liefde met die eerste trapslag was.

Vanjaar gaan altesaam 11 fietsryers die 473 km-roete aandurf en via Bredasdorp en Mosselbaai na George ry.

Hulle spring op 24 Februarie weg en sal na verwagting op 28 Februarie by hul bestemming aankom.

Tussen-in gaan hulle op verskillende dorpe stop, waar hulle by skole gaan aanklop en bewustheid oor downsindroom kweek.

Die onderskeie skole hou dikwels hul eie insamelingsprojekte en skenk dan die geld aan die fietsryers om vir die DSAWC te gee.

Jodi Hendriks, ’n downsindroom-lyer, begelei hulle saam met enkele ander DSAWC-personeellede. Hendriks, ’n groot Kurt Darren-liefhebber, lewer gewoonlik ’n klein vertoning.

Patrick Darlow sê die DSAWC word nie deur die staat ondersteun nie en het elke sent nodig wat vir hulle ingesamel word.

Vanjaar is die eerste keer dat twee fietsryers van die onderneming Freightmore saam gaan trap.

Hulle is nie juis bekommerd oor hierdie uitdaging nie, vertel

Brent Buckley van Freightmore.

“Dit is ’n voorreg en ’n eer (om hieraan deel te neem).”

Tineke Ganz-Malan, bestuurder van die Downsindroom-vereniging in die Wes-Kaap, sê dit is ’n voorreg om weer eens by die fietstoer betrokke te wees.

Dit gaan vir hulle meer oor bewusmaking as oor die geld, en om te wys “mense met downsindroom is maar net soos ons”.

Buiten geld benodig die DSAWC skenkings van onder meer kruideniersware, sjokolade, skyfies, sonskerm, neute, kitshawermout, sap, lekkergoed en petrol.

Verligting vir Kenhardt-boere TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

D

ie nie-winsgewende organisasie South African Water Warriors (SAWW) het onder meer water aan die Kenhardtgemeenskap in die Noord-Kaap geskenk.

Die organisasie is gestig deur Deon Smit, ’n afgetrede brandweerman van Goodwood.

Aangesien hy ’n passie het om water te bespaar, het hy SAWW in 2018 begin met die doel om water by die publiek en ondernemings in te samel en dit dan met die hulp van vrywilligers na gebiede te versprei waar nood is. Die waterskenking het op Saterdag 8 Februarie plaasgevind.

“Kenhardt is begroet deur ’n konvooi van 24 bakkies en vier sleepwaens vol kruideniersware, water, vars groente soos botterskorsies en aartappels, om ’n paar te noem.

Agter die konvooi het nege trokke, waarvan agt vol veevoer was, en een koeltrok met 30 000F water gevolg.

“In die snikhete temperature het boere gereed gewag so ver ’n mens kon sien. Trane is afgevee en emosie het hoog geloop by albei groepe. Altesaam 300 gesinne is gehelp met

kospakke wat gepak kon word uit die donasies van die publiek en ondernemings. Gevestigde boere, asook opkomende boere, kon almal hul deel van die voer ontvang,” sê Smit.

Volgens hom raak die droogte ’n werklikheid as jou spore in daardie dorre stof val.

“Die veld is leeg en skape staan teen die heining as hulle jou hoor verbyry. Die boere se moreel word gelig, die samesyn en gelag is ’n nodige verandering teenoor die stilte van kilometers tussen plase.

“Op die vraag watter van die donasies die kosbaarste is, was daar vele antwoorde: ‘Om te weet mense gee om vir ons’ of ‘Julle is almal vreemdelinge wat so ver gekom het om ons te help.’ Trane van blydskap en waardering vloei vir ’n paar blikkies kos of vars eiers, dis hoe ver gesinne al finansieel gebreek is deur die droogte,” verduidelik Smit.

SA Water Warriors is reeds besig met insamelings vir die volgende uitreik na beide Vanwyksvlei en Brandvlei in die NoordKaap, wat op Saterdag 18 April sal plaasvind.

Wen groot pryse in jaarlikse afvalplastiek-kompetisie NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk Dit is nou die tyd om aan afvalplastiek te dink.

Nie net kan jy die omgewing help nie, maar jy kan boonop groot pryse wen.

Ligstad, ’n nie-winsgewende organisasie, het onlangs ’n geleentheid gehou om

die jaarlikse afvalplastiekkompetisie van stapel te stuur.

Die kompetisie, nou in sy tweede jaar, val saam met die Bellville-wintermark wat van 23 Junie tot 4 Julie by die NG kerk Bellville-vallei gehou word.

“Plastiek is gevaarliker as springstof en ons moet daardie besoedeling bestry,” sê Erwin Schwella van CiviNovus, wat die

kompetisie help aanbied.

Hulle hoop om met hierdie kompetisie bewustheid te skep oor die gevare van afval en hoe dit tot ons voordeel herwin kan word.

Vanjaar is daar drie kategorieë waarin mense kan deelneem: ’n skoonmaakprojek, ’n kunswerk van afvalplastiek en ’n gebruiksartikel van afvalplastiek.

Die prysgeld is nog nie gefinaliseer nie, maar Schwella sê dit gaan minstens R5 000 per kategorie beloop.

Die pryswenners sal op Dinsdag 23 Junie om 18:00 aangekondig word.

Gala dinner in aid of Mes

A

n annual gala dinner was held last Wednesday in aid of Mould Empower and Serve (Mes) in Cape Town.

Mes works with unemployed people and the current activities are mainly focused in the northern suburbs. The premise of

the organisation is stopping handouts and instead restoring dignity and having people reach their full potential. Along with the Safe Space step-down shelter in Bellville, the Christian organisation also provides a job rehabilitation programme.

Emo Adams and the group Take Note provided the entertainment for the evening. Emo is seen here with Sean de Vries (left) and Lance Rhoda. Behind them are learners involved with the Pebbles Project.

She called on businesses to support their various endeavours, one being the employment of homeless people who are part of Mes’ job rehabilitation programme.

Coenie de Villiers was the master of ceremonies on the evening. He is a longstanding supporter of the organisation and says their employees are the true heroes in South Africa.

Só dra jy jou welvaart suksesvol oor “Pa koop, ek bou, my kinders verkoop, my kleinkinders het leë hande,” lui die Skotse gesegde.

Die suksesvolle oordrag van familiewelvaart is nie vir almal beskore nie. Die belangrikste redes hoekom die meeste familie-fortuine verdwyn – oor drie generasies heen, is weens die uiteenlopendheid van: . die familie se missie, waardes en geloofsoortuigings; . die beleggingsdoelwitte (fokus verskuif dikwels van ’n groei/opportunistiese na bewaring/konserwatiewe oogmerk); . die familie se intellektuele of hulpbronkapasiteit; . lewenstyl (eens konserwatief na uitspattig).

Elke suksesvolle familiebesigheid het sy eie fassinerende storie van unieke waagmoed, maar daar is sekere universele riglyne wat ons kan toepas op ons eie welvaartbeplanningstrategie. Hier volg ’n paar sleutelkonsepte vir oorweging met intergenerasiewelvaartskepping, gebaseer op insigte van James E. Hughes Junior in sy boek Family Wealth.

Beoefen spandinamika Ouers en grootouers se finansiële planne word dikwels deurmekaargekrap as gevolg van gades, kinders, asook broers en susters wat weens omstandighede finansieel in die moeilikheid beland (egskeiding, aflegging of siekte). Families is ’n eenheid van individue, wie se welstand interafhanklik is van mekaar en daarom is dit nodig om meer omvattende familiewelvaartbeplanning te doen.

Skep ’n positiewe missieverklaring Begin met jou familie ’n proses van ontdekking rondom jou eie missie, waardes en oortuigings. Dokumenteer, kommunikeer en belyn hierdie inhoud ook met diegene wat deel uitmaak van jou intergenerasie-welvaartplan. Hierdie missieverklaring behoort toeganklik te wees vir alle familielede. Die welstand (nie net finansieel nie) van elke familielid binne hierdie raamwerk is die sleutel vir hul voortbestaan, oor generasies heen.

Intergenerasie-welvaartbeplanning Baie min besigheidsbedrywighede begin met intergenerasie-beplanning. Dit is belangrik om vroeg, soos wat eksponensiële besigheidsukses sigbaar raak, intergenerasie-welvaartbeplanning te doen.

Die voordeel vir toekomsgenerasies om op vorige generasies se momentum voort te bou, moenie onderskat word nie.

Intergenerasie-welvaartbeplanning behels beplanning vir die eerste generasie (korttermyn), tweede generasie (mediumtermyn) en die derde generasie (langtermyn). Die geweldige klemverskuiwing kan nie genoeg benadruk word nie.

Ontwerp ’n raamwerk vir besluitneming ’n Verantwoordbaarheidsraamwerk moet vir die familie geskep word, waarbinne persoonlike verskille besleg kan word, selfs in die afwesigheid van die stigterslid. Die ontwerp en doeltreffendheid van hierdie raamwerk gaan ’n deurslaggewende rol speel in die suksesvolle oordrag van familiewelvaart na toekomstige generasies. Begin vroegtydig jou familielede betrek by jou familie se finansiële besluite.

Professionele raad Elke individu in ’n familie dra iets unieks (nie net finansieel nie) by wat ewe belangrik is vir die welstand van die familie om as ’n eenheid te kan funksioneer. Skep ruimte vir elke individu om by te dra in sy area van kundigheid.

Hersien die snelperke Ons weet almal hoe belangrik toerisme vir ons ekonomie is.

Daar is verskillende soorte toeriste hier in die Kaap, byvoorbeeld fietsryers, wyndrinkers, natuurliefhebbers, stappers, kampeerders en so aan.

Iets wat ons heeltemal van vergeet het, is dat Duitse toeriste byvoorbeeld gewoond is aan snelweë met geen spoedbeperkings nie.

My voorstel aan die minister van toerisme is dat ons hier in die Kaap ’n aantal paaie oormerk met geen spoedbeperking gedurende bepaalde tye nie.

Ek glo dit gaan ’n groot trekpleister wees en daar kan natuurlik toegangsgeld gehef word; die staat doen mos niks gratis nie. Dit behoort teen enige bedrag die moeite en geld werd te wees. Andersins, as die lughawe eendag toemaak, kan die aanloopbaan gebruik word. Killarney is ongelukkig nie ’n topspoedbaan nie.

Terselfdertyd kan ons ook begin druk plaas op die owerhede om van hul “spoedmalligheid” af te sien. Daar is al hoe meer standaardmotors op ons paaie wat beperk word tot 250 km/h. Sommige haal lankal meer as 300 km/h en van die elektriese motors 400 km/h.

Ek is glad nie verras dat dit lyk of almal vinnig ry nie; karre is nou eenmaal gemaak om vinniger as voetgangers, fietse en donkies te ry. En krag en spoed is seker van die wonderlikste vryhede waarvan ons ontneem kan word. Ek wil dit net baie duidelik stel dat ek glad nie ’n voorstander van roekelose bestuur is nie. Trouens, met spoed kom enorme verantwoordelikheid, soos om ’n vuurwapen te besit. Mense moenie dink dat ’n mens enige tyd en enige plek net

vinnig kan ry nie. En natuurlik – die wind in die Kaap sal ook verseker dat jy baie stadig ry.

Neem ander mense in ag met musiek Ek wil beaam wat “Ou Suurbek” van Brackenfell sê oor bure wat voel dat almal na hulle en/of hul keuse van musiek moet luister (“Respekteer jou medemens”, 5/2).

Ons self kuier graag en dis heerlik om met vriende of familie ’n jolige tyd te geniet.

So, ons het geen beswaar as die bure kuiermense het nie, maar wel as hul musiek só hard is dat ons onsself toesluit in ons huis en die TV so hard moet stel om weg te kom van hul musiek. Nie almal geniet dieselfde musiek nie. Hoe kan ’n mens kuier as die musiek so oorverdowend is? Ek dink as mense die beginsel van “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” volg, sal almal in rus en vrede woon.

Ons het nie sulke suurknolle nodig Aangesien die Duitse vriende en die naamlose briefskrywer (“Toeriste wil nie weer SA besoek nie”, 29 Januarie) niks positief oor ons pragtige land en die Kaap kon vind om te geniet nie, dink ek hulle moet maar gerus nie weer hierheen kom nie. Ons het nie sulke suurknolle en mense wat net die lelik in die lewe raak sien, nodig nie. Komaan mense! Kyk om julle!

Miskien moet hulle liewer Doebai toe gaan volgende keer. Ongelukkig het hulle nie ’n berg of pylsterte nie.

Besoek jou eie kliniek Ek verwys na die brief van anoniem in TygerBurger (“Kliniek se diens gaan agteruit”, 5/2).

Ons weet almal die klinieke is onder baie druk. Ek het nog altyd goeie diens by die Bellville-kliniek ontvang.

Ek sien die klaers is van Durbanville en Brackenfell. U val nie onder Bellville nie.

Miskien moet al die mense van Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kraaifontein en Kuilsrivier die klinieke in hul eie gebiede besoek. Daar is te veel mense wat Bellville toe kom en dit maak dit nog moeiliker vir die kliniek om by te hou.

Beggar seen going to liquor store I would like to add my story about beggars to the letter “Stop beggars ‘killing themselves’ ” by C. Liebenberg that was published in TygerBurger on Wednesday 5 February.

I wrote a letter to TygerBurger and to the Afrikaans daily newspaper Die Burger about two weeks ago. This was about a lady standing at the intersection of Okavango Road and Belami Drive, near Makro.

In this case, it is not only swollen hands, but a red/pink heavily swollen face.

She uses her income to go to TOPS at SPAR at CapeGate Lifestyle Centre. I have seen her many times, and besides this she sleeps just there on the ground where the old Blasters Restaurant used to be. This between people getting in and out of taxis that stop there.

Needless to say, I got a mouthful from a person in Somerset West, telling me if I have not been in that positi-

There are shelters, but they don’t want to go there, they say there are too many rules.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with this reader.

I had the same problem.

The neighbours were celebrating some event or other. It is all well and good if anyone wants to celebrate a special occasion, but for goodness sake keep it within a time limit.

You are not the only people in the neighbourhood. Please bear in mind there might be someone who is very ill, or someone wanting to watch a movie “in peace” or even a household with a tiny baby, and the parents need some rest.

As the writer of the letter suggested, tone down at about 23:00 and take your music inside as well as your conversation. I don’t want to listen to their music, conversation and “out of hand” laughter till the early hours of Sunday morning. I guess no one else in the neighbourhood does.

In our neighbourhood, some home-owners have lived there for 20 to 40 odd years. These noisy neighbours are only renting, and have no respect at all. I have reported them to the people concerned and also contacted law enforcement on that occasion.

á die sukses van die eerste konsert in 2019, word die tweede Kuier op die graskonsert op Sondag 5 April weer op Zevenwacht-wynplaas aangebied.

Vanjaar beloof dit om groter en beter te wees met drie kuns­tenaars – Snotkop, Ricus Nel en Juan Boucher.

Five positives for property in SONA In the lead-up to the State of the Nation Address (SONA), property experts were united in their hopes that the president’s address would provide clear leadership, a pragmatic outlook, and actionable plans to boost investor confidence.

Managing director for the Rawson Property Group, Tony Clarke says the speech held the following five positive elements for the property market.

Education and training “The emphasis placed on young people, education and training was particularly important,” Clarke says.

“If implpementation of plans in these areas goes well, the youth will be far better able to create a financially stable future for themselves. This will have a very positive knock-on effect for the housing market in the long-term by expanding our already fast-growing middle class X a vital component of a

healthy and active property market.”

Job creation Youth initiatives will also play a role in the president’s emphasis on job creation X another important influence on the economy, according to Clarke.

“Job growth is key to maintaining market momentum,” he says.

“Without it, consumers lose confidence to buy property, even if they can afford to do so.

By recognising the unemployment crisis and spotlighting reform through programmes like the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention, the government could go a long way towards boosting investor confidence.”

Student accommodation A more direct impact on the property market will be seen in the government’s planned

R64 billion investment in student housing X an investment that will also leverage at least another R64 billion in private capital.

This will not only address the growing need for affordable student accommodation across the country; it should also trigger a sizeable resurgence in market activity, as well as stimulating the construction industry.

Social housing The government’s planned investment in property is not limited to students either.

Ramaphosa announced a social housing programme that could leverage as much as R9 billion in private investment to construct 37 000 low-income apartments.

“Housing demand has definitely increased over the past year, especially at the lower end of the market,” says Clarke.

“The social housing programme recognises shortages in this sector and will help address this growing need.”

While Clarke says the current economic climate makes it unlikely that many of these tenants will be able to use social housing as a springboard to becoming first-time buyers in the near future, the general increase in rental activity will still help stimulate property market.

Renewable enegry projects With Eskom’s plight in stark focus, president Ramaphosa’s plan to increase grid capacity through renewable energy, amongst other sources, was understandably well-received.

According to Clarke, this will not only help alleviate load shedding woes and stabilise our embattled economy; progress on this front should also renew investor confidence, indirectly boosting property market

activity.

“Buyers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of environmentally responsible building and interior design,” he says.

“This will be a consistent trend in years to come as global climate change escalates.

We hope to see further opportunities for homeowners in this space as our government becomes more open to renewable energy and independent power production. We are very pleased to see more progressive attitudes start to filter into government policy.”

Clarke says that Ramaphosa’s address left more than one question hanging.

“However, I am optimistic that, should the outlined economic reforms be brought to successful fruition, a return to consumer, investor and market confidence will follow, bringing with it the restoration of South Africa’s fiscal health.

outh Africa will open their Over 50s Cricket World Cup tournament, sponsored by Evergreen Lifestyle retirement villages, against Wales at Cape Town Cricket Club on Wednesday 11 March, while defending champions Australia will tackle strongly fancied underdogs Zimbabwe at Claremont Cricket Club.

Favourites, India and England, square off at Green Point Cricket Club, New Zealand will face West Indies at Rondebosch Cricket Club, while Sri Lanka tackle Canada and Pakistan face Namibia at Western Province Cricket Club.

All 12 teams will be involved on match days, during a packed schedule, which will see them play at least seven 45-over games during 13 days – and eight, if they reach the Bowl or Plate final at Claremont CC on March 23 or the Cup Final at Newlands on 24 March.

“It’s going to be a great challenge and there will be some sore bodies, but we all have squads of 16, so we’ll get through – it’s part of the charm of this tournament,” said South African Captain, former EP and Proteas all-rounder, Dave Callaghan.

Tournament organisers have scheduled

the second round of matches at some of Cape Town’s most prominent cricket schools, including Rondebosch and Wynberg, the respective alma maters of Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis, as well as Bishops and Milnerton.

Reigning SA and WP champion Charl Visser, who had endured a rough day after a first race retirement, found his feet in the final and drove to a dominant win from Coetzee.

Durbanville het steeds ’n kans om die WPtitel te verower ondanks ’n wankelrige begin aan sy kolfbeurt Saterdag teen Victoria.

Die Durbies (157/7) het Victoria (155) met 3 paaltjies getroef.

Dit was in ’n groot mate te danke aan Byron Boshoff (52*) se kolfwerk.

Dit was twee Loubsers wat deeglik stem dikgemaak het in Brackenfell (126/1) se wegholsege met nege paaltjies oor Langa (125).

Nadat Johan Loubser (5/19) die Langa-kolwers vroegdag goed in toom gehou het, het Michael Loubser (102*, 45 balle, 8x6, 9x4) gesorg dat die Brakke ’n kortpad vat na ’n oorwinning.

UWK se kolwers het die afgelope naweek gesukkel om die mas op te kom.

Nadat die studentespan Saterdag met ’n skamele telling van 101 lopies ’n loesing van 113 lopies teen Kaapstad op die lyf geloop het, het UWK Sondag met 111/9 naelskraap deurgeskuur teen die Universiteit Kaapstad (107).

Nadat Kuilsrivier vroegoggend vir ’n skamele 33 lopies uitgeboender is deur Edgemead se Simon Blake (5/18) en Ettienne Joubert (4/11), het die tuisspan op ’n drafstap met 8 paaltjies geseëvier.

’n Uithaler-vertoning deur Tiaan Visagie (Curro Durbanville) en ’n driekuns deur Darren van Zyl (Monumentpark) was van die hoogtepunte in die afgelope naweek se o.19A-krieketwedstryde in die Peter Buttner Sportkompetisie.

Visagie (86* en 5/26) het saam met Yazeed Arendse (50) ’n leeue-aandeel gehad aan Curro se sege van 117 lopies oor HS Durbanville, terwyl Van Zyl met ’n merkwaardige boulskof in die wedstryd teen Proteahoogte vorendag gekom het.

In antwoord op Monumentpark se laerige totaal van 89 lopies was Proteahoogte op 88/6 op pad na ’n skynbaar maklike oorwinning.

Maar toe haal Van Zyl (6/23) die laaste vier besoekende kolwers uit sonder om ’n lopie af te staan en besorg aan Monumentpark ’n oorwinning met een lopie.

Vroeër het die verloorspan se Devin Jones (5/21) self kookwater-boulwerk gelewer.

In die Sammy Bloch/Medicare Apteke-uitklopkompetisie vir o.19-spanne het Stellenberg (t De Kuilen) en D.F. Malan (t HS Tygerberg) oorwinnings in die kwarteindronde beklink. In die ander kwarteindwedstryde speel HS Bellville vandeesweek teen Fairmont terwyl HS Durbanville en Curro Durbanville mekaar die stryd aansê.
