GOODWOOD: ‘TERRIBLE STATE OF ROADS ARE SIMPLY BEING IGNORED’

F
ive frustrated Goodwood residents took matters into their own hands and started the process of filling potholes in their street. The pothole situation has been an ongoing challenge for many communities across the metro. Wouter Immelman, who is also a Goodwood neighbourhood watch volunteer, said filling potholes recently wasn’t a first for him as last year he filled what he described to be a “massive pothole” in front of his house. Towards the end of September he got together with four other residents of Getrude Street and filled up 37 potholes.
“We would really love to do this again but would require the assistance of more residents. Between Gertrude Street and Dirkie Uys Street, which also crosses onto Merriman Street, we filled 25 potholes. That evening we started at 21:00 and finished at about 00:00. For the filling we used cement. This has brought much relief to residents in our street,” said Immelman. Leona van Wyk, chair of the Goodwood NHW, said in her 24 years of living in Goodwood, their road have neverbeen resurfaced. “Always a temporary patch done with extremely poor workmanship. Why was Giel Basson resur-
faced when there really was no need for it to be done?” Goodwood Ratepayers’ Association chair, Faizel Petersen said there’s a general feeling of disappointment and frustration that the City of Cape Town has allowed the conditions of the roads to deteriorate to the extent that it has. “There are many elderly people in our area who could end up in an accident when hitting a pothole and potentially loosing control of their vehicles. There are some residents who have mentioned damage to their tyres and rims, so it has become frustrating driving in the area. “There were repairs done by one group in

Gertrude, Dirkie Uys, Versveld and Merriman Streets. Other residents mentioned they also did it around Hugo Street,” said Petersen. He added that calls had been logged throughout the year, as there were individual potholes spread out, however with the lockdown being in effect, with roads maintenance department not being operational, the issue has been getting worse. “Since last year, we as the GRRA and our members queried with our ward councillors, when the area will be getting all roads resurfaced as it has been many years since our area received a resurfacing. Again, we note surrounding areas getting their streets resurfaced, where the terrible state of our roads are simply being ignored.” V Photos on page 2
