Painting party The Grade 11b class of Uitzig High in Uitsig were hard at work over the weekend when they started redecorating their classroom. Teacher Peter Neethling says the idea was sparked when he discussed what changes they would like to see in their school and they decided that sprucing up their classroom would be a good idea. It all fell into place when Cosatu’s Tony Ehrenreich approa ched the school with a project to start giving a facelift to local schools. Paint, brushes and other equipment as well as refresh ments for the day were provided and the group were ready to tackle the task. Ehrenreich says that this was a pilot class for similar projects for other schools in the area. “This will no doubt inspire others to follow suit. We now need to raise more funds for more paint and equipment to support these learners to change their lives in more ways than one. Elsies flats crumbling

esidents complaining about the condition of some blocks of flats in Avonwood Estate in Elsies River, have reached breaking point, as the flats are literally falling apart around them. Residents in the flats near the Avonwood Sports Ground, have been unhappy with the state of their dwellings for a number of years, and promises to improve their lot have come to nought over the years. They have once again drawn up a petition detailing some of the problems and sent it to local authorities, but have not received any feedback as yet. Community activitist Aletta Lottering,
who is originally from the area, has once again taken up the plight of the community. She feels that too many promises have been made to this community, and none of them have been kept. “Nothing has changed,” she said.
Sewerage crisis “There are problems in almost every flat in this area and range from broken window frames where the cement is just rotting around it to mould in many of the houses where painting just does not help. The biggest problem however, is threatening the health of these residents where the sewerage system is not working properly. “Most of the pipes in the walls are damaged and this results in major problems for
people living on the bottom floors. “The water just seeps into the walls and gathers at the bottom, then these toilets at the bottom block-up and don’t work so they can’t be flushed properly. This poses a constant health hazard attracting lots of flies and other bugs.” Berenice Saaiman who lives in Hendrina Court, said that they had been promised upgrades many times but it never happens. “Everytime its an election year we are promised many things, but nothing gets done,” she said. “We’ve gone to complain to the council many times but they just tell us that they will look into it. Meanwhile, the suffering continues for all and we don’t know where we must go next.” V To Page 2

Lottering also added that some of the basic services were not delivered in the area. “The people have complained that the dirt is sometimes not collected in the area, and most of the washing lines that should be provided have all broken. “People have put up their own but it is not enough for everybody, which leads to problems when everybody tries to use the existing lines at the same time.” Lottering added that while drug-abuse and crime were also a major dilemma in the area the people feel that they are neglected insofar the repairs and upgrading of these flats are concerned. “They need something to be proud of but they can’ be proud of these flats that are just falling apart - it leads to other problems. This time around we don’t want promises - we want action!”

Two community workers are taking it upon themselves to take the message of responsibility to the generation of “Born Free’s” in Bellville South. Dhakir Christians and David Maritz have taken their programme to schools and youth organisations, where they speak to youth about how they can contribute to a better future in their communities. They recently took time to speak to learners at Kasselsvlei High where they addressed the youth about the opportunities that are there for them in a new South Africa. Christians explained that Born Free’s are those born after the apartheid era or just before it ended. “We have to tell them of the legacy of apartheid that existed before
they were born,” he explained. “They must know about the uprisings of the youth in 1976, the part that youth played in the struggle and how it is now time that they must play a part in preserving that freedom. “They learn about it in history, but what we want to do is give them the perspective of people who lived through those times.” Christians also pointed out to the youth that Born Free’s make up 40% of our population, according to census figures. “There’s a lot of criticism against this new generation. Many see them as apathetic and apolitical, unaware of the history of the struggle that made our lives better. “They must be made aware of the legacy of Nelson Mandela, be motivated by it, and be prepared to play their part in their communities.

‘Child rapist’s house’ burnt down @gvdcapejazz

he community of Delft is up in arms once again, after news of another young child being raped and a neighbour arrested. They retaliated by burning down his house. This incident occured last week, Wednesday, and is the latest in a series of abuse against children that has been prevalent since the start of this year. Police have confirmed the incident saying that they are investigating the case but due to the sensitive nature of the incident, are not giving out anymore informatio, apart from the fact that residents indeed burnt down the suspect’s house. They also confirmed that a 40-year-old had been arrested.

Family friend A community member who did not want to be named commented that a resident was also injured during the arrest of the suspect on Thursday. He also pointed out that this was another case where the perpertrator was known to the family. “We were told that these neighbours were good friends and the victim’s family trusted him. “The little girl was a regular visitor to the household and she was treated like family so how could something like this have happened? We are all in shock and fear for the safety of all our children,” he said. The incident comes in the wake of other attacks on Delft children since January 19 this year. A 9-year-old was left to die after she was raped and set alight beside the R300 highway. On February 8, another girl, Siphokuhle Flephu, 11, was found dead in a shack in Delft and had allegedly been raped. A week earlier, a six-year-old Delft girl was raped in a communal toilet in the area. While residents are still in shock and calling for urgent action a major call to prayer will be happening in the area on Sunday. Reverend Oscar Bougardt is one of the organisers of the event that will take place at The Hague Recreational Centre in Delft Main Road. “We’re calling on all who want their voices heard against this violence to support this event,” he says. “This is the chance for Delft to show that

While Elsies River on the Cape Flats may be featured in the news for the crime, gangsterism and drug abuse that is the scourge of some parts of this community, Riverton Close is home to a young man, whose talents as a pianist is taking him to the top. Eben Wagenstroom is a final year music student at the University of Cape Town, but the love for his music has been earning him accolades since his days at Tygerberg High School in Parow where in his matric year he performed at the prestigous Carnegie Hall in New York. Now four years later, that journey continues as this young talent in the classical world gets ready for another trip that will see him take to this stage yet again. This weekend he was hard at work practicing and packing his bags to travel to New York to be part of the Behre Piano Associates Adamant Music School Anniversary Concert that will be taking place on Sunday. Eben was very excited about his trip pointing out that he was glad to be invited to play at this concert. “Last year I was part of the Adamant ‘Traditional Sessi-

With another young person killed in Bonteheuwel over the weekend, and shootings threatening the community almost every day, a Joint Peace Forum is getting together to fight the scourge. This Sunday (9 March) they are calling on residents to unite for peace with a march that will be starting at 14:00. Soraya Salie is one of the organisers and pointed out that too many people are affected by all the gang shooting that has been happening in the area. “Too many innocent people are affected and residents are living in fear for their own lives and mostly for the lives of their children who are sometimes caught in the crossfire,”she said. We live in a community under siege by a few who have total disregard for our children who must go to school and for parents who must go to work to earn a living. “People have become priso-
ners in their own homes and we must stop it.” Salie pointed out that the residents of Bonteheuwel condemn the shootings and appeal to the culprits to stop immediately. “This community will not be dictated to by those who have total disrespect and disregard for the peace loving residents of Bonteheuwel. “We call on every peace loving person in Bonteheuwel to take hands and unite for peace. This area has a strong history of resistance against apartheid and we fought hard for our freedom. Now we must fight for the peace in our neighbourhoods.” At this inter-faith prayer service and march the community will be calling on the police and authorities to take strong action against perpertrators. As a sign of unity they are appealing to everyone to wear a white sweater or shirt at the march. The march will be starting from the bus terminus in Bluegum Street. Die persentasie stygings in blok 2 van die volledig huishoudelike kategorie oorskry die standaardstyging weens die verlaging in die subsidievlak in hierdie blok, wat op sy beurt deur verbruikspatrone en die watervraagstrategie genoodsaak word.

Trapsgewyse tariewe (1-6) is vanaf 1 Julie 2013 vir die huishoudelike groepskategorie ingestel op grond van vorige oorlegpleging met kliënte. Verdere stappe is gedoen om dié kategorie verder in lyn met die volledige huishoudelike kategorie te bring.

Die spesiale kortings vir senior burgers en persone met gestremdhede vir die boekjaar 2014/15 verskyn in die tabel hier onder:

Hoogtepunte van voorgestelde wysigings • RESIDENSIËLE TARIEWE: Algehele styging in inkomste uit die groep is 7,63%, maar individuele kliënte sal waarskynlik verskillende stygings waarneem op grond van werklike verbruik. Die verskil tussen die gemiddelde en werklike styging spruit uit die verhaling van die tekort aan inkomste uit die hulptarief vir blok 1. • Verbruikers wat 450 kWh per maand ontvang, sal dieselfde persentasie styging waarneem, ongeag die tarief wat vir hulle geld. Daar is dus geen verandering in die subsidievlak wat hierdie verbruikers op die hulptarief ontvang nie. • GRATIS BASIESE ELEKTRISITEIT: Hulptariefkliënte wat minder as 250 kWh per maand ontvang, sal ’n gratis basiese toevoer van 60 kWh kry, terwyl diegene wat tussen 250 kWh en 450 kWh per maand ontvang ’n gratis basiese toevoer van 25 kWh per maand sal kry.

Die polisiebeampte van Beaufort-Wes het agtergekom hy is in die verkeerde baan en kon nie die afdraai Kaapstad toe neem nie. Hy moes afdraai Paarl toe. Die beampte het eenvoudig voor my ingery en het my voertuig links voor getref. Nou ontvang ek ’n oproep van Telesure (deel van Auto & General), wat my meedeel dat die polisie voel hulle gaan nie betaal nie. Die versekeraars reken hulle sal nie finansieel baat om die saak verder te neem nie. En ek is die onskuldige party! Waarvoor het ek versekering? Beteken dit dat die polisie net kan skouer optrek en die onskuldige publiek moet pa staan vir hul foute? Waar is die regverdigheid? Hoeveel ander gevalle is hier ter sprake? Beware of sly wood sellers I am the average South African and therefore enjoy a decent braai at least once a week. However, nowadays it is becoming a costly exercise with the prices of everything rising, but being a good South African it is not negotiable whether to braai or not. So to beat rising costs, I decided to braai just once a week and to buy my wood in bulk which will cost me less. Something I never considered was the slyness of the “wood people” – specifically referring to the people selling wood next to Kenridge Primary School on weekends. About two weeks ago I had replenished my wood and went to them and ordered 1 000 pieces at R1 per piece – equating to R1 000. It was to be delivered at my home. In due time they arrived and delivered the ordered wood. After they left, I was looking at the amount of wood and it seemed as if I was done in. When counting the wood, I discovered they delivered only 600 pieces, crooking me of R400. There are families who can’t even afford to have a daily meal and yet good food is discarded daily. We would love to have decent homes and decent jobs to sustain our families. ‘L’ signs will not work Although Frank’s idea has some merit, it is actually pretty silly in the South African context (“Introduce a sign for new drivers”, TygerBurger, 26 February). Firstly, there is no legal requirement in South Africa for a learner driver to display an “L” sign. I refer you to the K53 website, under their FAQ: “There is nothing in the legislation concerning L-plates. They are not a requirement and are purely optional,” – see more at www.k53-test.co.za. Secondly, with the lawless driving mindset of a huge portion of our population, your suggestion would not work. The only way to fix drivers’ attitudes is to double our traffic police and increase penalties, at the same time as removing the thousands of unroadworthy and unlicensed vehicles and drivers from our roads. Ajax Cape Town handed coach Roger De Sa a perfect debut on the bench at the Athlone Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Polokwane City on Friday night. Goals from Keagan Dolly and Nathan Paulse secured the Urban Warriors all three points. The fixture was Roger De Sa’s first match in charge of the Parow based side and he took the bold move of making a few changes to the usual starting line-up which was utilised by his predecessors. Captain Dominic Isaacs was suspended for this match , while Rivaldo Coetzee was making his debut for the team after coming through the youth academy. Ajax Cape Town was quick off the mark, their quick inter-passing and running off the ball caught Polokwane City napping. Ernesto Telinho was first to test the Polokwane City defence but he pulled his shot at goal wide of the target.

Tempo Ajax continued to play at a high tempo and this clearly bothered the visitors as they to slowed the game down playing long diagonal balls to get behind the Ajax Cape Town defence. Thulani Hlatshwayo marshaled his defence well, containing the visitor’s attacks and setting up the counter attacks from within his own half. Mention must be given to Ajax debutant, Rivaldo Coetzee who at 17 was the youngest member of the Ajax Cape Town side. He partnered Hlatshwayo in the centre of the Ajax Cape Town defence.
