Depression is taking its toll on learners in our communities. Increasing crime, gangsterism and substance abuse are affecting more people than only those practicing. These social issues affect a community’s development on the whole. Working with local learners in the area, community worker Dhakir Christians, is seeing these problems among the youth increase at an alarming rate. Christians who has worked in Extended Public Works Projects of the City of Cape Town at various schools within Bellville South recently did a workshop with learners at Kasselsvlei High where he found that family life affected learners in many ways, sometimes leading to depression. “They are stressed by the workload at school and sometimes by high expectations by parents at home,” he said. “They do not know how to cope with stress thus resort to the ‘dreamland’ of drugs and alcohol. These youth are sometimes also deprived of parental love as parents are too occupied with their jobs or dysfunctional in their children’s lives. “In search of their own identity, youth are easily influenced by their peers. They befriend people who smoke and drink as they want to be ‘in the group’. “They think that smoking and drinking is a symbol of greatness which adds to the long list of being ‘macho’. They do not realise the deadly effects of smoking and drinking namely lung cancer, asthma, heart attack and strokes. With all these effects, they certainly do not have any bright future lying ahead of them.” Christian pointed out that in order to
combat these bad habits, there are few solutions that should be taken by the society. “Firstly, the school should organise programmes to motivate students as well as advise them on the dangers of their fatal smoking and drinking habits. “Anti-drug and alcohol campaigns should be held at least twice a year in residential areas and parents should play a part in helping their children to choose the right friends. A group of good friends can guide and lead the youth to a better future. “Parents should also show their affection for their children by spending more quality time with them. At this age, teenagers need others to pay attention to them and cater to their needs,” he said. Gangsterism and bullying are also a daily occurrence at schools and this is causing problems. “Usually, this problem happens in the secondary school and the cause may be due to broken family background and financial issues. “Due to this, the crime rate involving youth has increased tremendously. Dissatisfaction between the bully and his victim leads to revenge which can sometimes cause injuries and even death. “We must also prevent the problem of gangsterism from spreading. One of the preventive measures is to give counselling sessions to these problematic students. “They should be taught how to respect others regardless of the race, physical appearance or socio-economic background. “Awareness campaigns should be organised to make youth better individuals. The final way to prevent gangsterism in schools is through strict enforcement by the authorities,” he said.

City of Cape Town Metro Police officers were very active on our streets this weekend arresting 20 suspects for various offences They recorded eight by-law offences; issued 135 traffic fines; and confiscated 41 000 illicit cigarettes during operations and crime prevention patrols in various areas ranging from Bishop Lavis and Bellville South to the southern suburbs as far as Muizenberg. On Sunday morning, officers arrested two motorists in Modderdam Road in Bellville South and Voortrekker Road in Bellville respectively on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. Officers also pulled over a vehicle during a crime prevention patrol in Bishop Lavis and arrested one of the passengers for the possession of illegal narcotics after she was found with tik. On Saturday, the Metro Police Camera Response Unit arrested four motorists in the CBD, all on charges of drunk driving. Later that evening, officers responded to an accident on the corner of Vanguard Drive and Ja-
kkalsvlei Road in Bonteheuwel. One of the motorists involved in the accident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. During high visibility patrols in Atlantis, four suspects were arrested for public drunkenness and one for possession of illegal narcotics after he was found with dagga. Another suspect was arrested for assaulting a police official after he tore his uniform. During a joint operation with the South African Revenue Services in Goodwood, officers confiscated 41 000 illicit cigarettes. Owing to the recent shootings, Metro Police officers continued with their high visibility patrols and random searches in Grassy Park, Lavender Hill, Steenberg and surrounding areas over the weekend, leading to the arrest of six suspects for possession of illegal narcotics. They confiscated half of a Mandrax tablet and two parcels of dagga. “With the school holidays under way, we appeal to children to remember the rules of the road when crossing streets and to be very wary of strangers,” said Metro Police chief, Wayne Le Roux.

Special needs sudden reality “They get treated like doorstops.” Harsh words from a mother of a special needs child, who admits to once having the same kind of attitude towards disabled people. We see them sitting at a shop entrance. People walk past pretending not to notice. Some might stare and others will stop briefly to add a coin to the tin. “I was that person,” says Faranaaz Rinquest. “I used to look at people and I felt sorry for them, it’s not to say people are not concerned or compassionate, but they don’t really understand.”
Faranaaz’s reality changed on 23 January 2008, a date now engraved on her memory. A heart procedure on her son Ziyaad went horribly wrong and left the then five-year-old with severe cerebral palsy. Faranaaz recalls, “It was worse than death for me ... because they gave me someone else back.” She resigned from her job and over the past four years most of her life has revolved around taking care of Ziyaad. About a year ago things started to regress out of nowhere. Ziyaad’s mobility slowed down, he couldn’t swallow properly and he developed apnea, where there is an impulse from the brain to stop breathing. Increasing episodes of apnea
led to his readmission to Red Cross. After two months in hospital, with his dad at his side 24/7, Ziyaad is now back at home. His parents want to give him comfort care. Faranaaz explains, “The doctors asked me what I think, whether he is regressing towards death, and I said, well he’s definitely going somewhere and it’s not the positive way. “They said whenever we treat him, we’re not healing him, we’re just intervening with the process that he will eventually not be here any more. We’re putting his body through more work, because he has pushed further than what they expected for
his condition. “He will have no further surgery as any anaesthetic will be deadly. He cannot even be resuscitated. So we decided to give him comfort care for these last months. No more antibiotics, no more drips, no more interventions because his body is just doing too much work.” The Rinquests are just one of 28 families that Iris House Children’s Hospice is currently involved with. A group of American students is proving that travelling is more than just the tourist thing. Every year a group of students from the Johnson and Wales University in Providence come to Cape Town as part of their “Study Abroad” programme, and each year Mimosa Primary School in Bonteheuwel is an important part of their travel plans. Through their partnership with Hoeri Kwaggo Tours and Safaris, that arranges their travel arrangements, part of their itinerary is visiting the school and other areas where they get to speak to the communities on the Cape Flats. This year that partnership had more meaning as part of this initiative leaves behind something special that will benefit the community – a play park for the children. An important part of their time in the city is a four-day adventure camp that involves the Grade 6 learners from the school and a visit to Robben Island.
All the expenses for the learners are sponsored by students at the school. The students all get a chance to visit the school and surrounding areas to discover the circumstances of the children at the school. Last year the students were very moved by the circumstances of children from the area but noticed that there was no play area at the school. They then decided that they would collect money for the park, and one of the students had a better plan. Jessica Fernandez indicated that her parents would make the donation, and they would like to do it in memory of her sister, Daniela, who died last year. On Monday 25 June it all became a reality as the Daniela Fernandez Playpark was officially launched by JWU students and learners from the school. Frederick Ross, principal of the school, thanked the students for their caring, and said that the partnership played an important part in motivating the learners to know that there are people in another part of the world who cared about them.

A group of young people are setting their sights on sharing their faith in Rio de Janeiro. The Rio Faith Quest is a group of six youngsters from Elsies River, Matroosfontein and Belhar who want to attend the World Youth Day in Rio next year. This event is a Catholic initiative where pilgrims from all over the world gather in one place to worship together, share in their faith, acquire knowledge and various experiences. Marvin-Lee Presens (21) is one of the members of the group who has his sights set on this adventure. “It takes place in a different country each year, and when we read about how it changes the lives of those attending we knew that we wanted to be part of it,” he says of the event which is held every three years. Since making their decision they have been hosting various fundraising events but are also welcoming any sponsorships from any individuals or businesses to reach their target of an estimated R25 000 per person to
make their pilgrimage possible. Other members of the group are Meghan Samuels (17), Anthea Hector (19), Courtney Matthews (19), Nashville Solomons (21), and Mc-Arthur Joseph (27). “We have undertaken this quest because we feel that our experiences will be able to inspire other youth in our communities that they must be strong in their faith to achieve in life,” added Presens. On Saturday the group will be hosting an exciting Christmas in July event that takes the form of an indoor picnic and concert. It will be taking place in the Lighthouse Family Church in Arundle Drive, Belhar featuring young artists such as JeanO, Janeli Steyn, John Wolmarans, Jazzinco and many more. Tickets are R40 and the activities will start at 19:00. You are encouraged to bring along a blanket to have a “picnic” feel. In conjunction with the concert, the group is also hosting a blanket drive for homeless families and those attending this event are encouraged to donate their picnic blanket for this worthy cause. Do you know this man? An unknown, 47-year-old man was admitted to the Tygerberg Hospital on Monday 28 May. The man, registered as Unknown TBH Golf May, was brought to the hospital by ambulance after he was knocked by a car in Modderdam Road, about 100 metres from De la Rey Road. The first European Kyokushin Open held under the newly formed Kyokushin World Union, recently took place in Moscow. The aim of the tournament was to unite the different organisations in order to get Kyokushin included in the International Olympic Committee. South Africa was represented by Siyabonga Tyandela, multiple SA champion from the Peninsula Technikon, who was accompanied by Shihah Hennie Bosman, chairman of Kyokushin-kan Africa. In the third round Siyabonga received an injury to his left knee against one of the top Russian fighters and lost in extra time. Bosman had the honour of being selected as centre referee for the final rounds. If all goes well karate as well as Kyokushin will become Olympic events in 2020.
