DAUGHTER DONATES KIDNEY: MEDICAL AID WON’T COVER DONOR

A new lease on life GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

A

gift of life from a daughter to a father should be honoured in any community, but it is frowned upon in some cir-

cles. Abigail Willemse from Ravensmead has discovered that giving a kidney to her father, could leave her destitute because her medical aid does not cover the costs for donors. While the clerk who works for the city’s Library and Information Services cannot describe her joy at giving her father another lease on life, she has had to be treated for depression after the reality of facing the costs of being a donor hit home. “Nothing can beat seeing my father now,” she says. “I have been watching him suffering since he was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2010. “At first my mother wanted to be a donor, but the risk of it not matching was too great to take the risk. “That is when I decided to help because my father was always first in line when any of us needed his help,” she said. She added that while she wanted to do it immediately, medical advice said that she needed to be older, so she waited patiently. “As a family we had to learn about being patient and trusting God,” she said. “First there was tests for more than a year at Groote Schuur, and then the joy of discovering that I was a match.

Suffering “After my second daughter was born I decided that we must go ahead because my father could not take the suffering any more. “This was also a very trying time when my medical aid let me know a week before the procedure that they would not be covering my costs. “Luckily the transplant division at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital negotiated with my father’s medical aid to pay for me as the donor as well, and the operation then took place on 16 August.” Abigail’s union is still in negotiations with the city regarding the stance of the

Her father, Marthinus Snyders, is still coming to terms with his new lease of life but acknowledges his daughter’s gift of love. “It’s still a long way to go to full recovery,” he said. “But, since the operation I am more independent, I don’t have to go for dialysis, and I am forever grateful for what Abigail has done. “I value this second chance at a normal life again, and I even appreciate being able to go

to the toilet again,” he said with a broad smile.

Family Abigail continued by adding that this time in their lives had brought the family together, and also made them aware of the importance of organ donations. “Our family has grown closer since the procedure, but it is important to get the message out there of the importance of organ donations.

“Some people are still scared, but if they can see the joy on my face when I see my father living normally again, they may want to change their minds. “There may have been a setback when it came to my medical aid, but I still trust in the Lord who gave me this opportunity to make this sacrifice for my father.” At the time of going to press TygerBurger was still awaiting response from The City of Cape Town with regard to their medical aid procedures.

Police rescue baby after kidnapping

Confiscated liquor goes down drain GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

It looked like the setting for the festive party of the season at 35 Squadron of the SAPS in Belhar on Thursday. A table was packed with all your top of the range brands of whisky, brandy, vodka, gin, beers and wines, but the absence of party music told you that there would be no drunken revellers enjoying these refreshments – they were destined for destruction. While some of the gathering gazed longingly at the wares on display provincial commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen Arno Lamoer, pointed out that it was a consignment of liquor that was

destined for the drain. Joining Lamoer at the facility were Community Safety MEC Dan Plato, and Economic Development MEC Alan Winde who took part in the process of destroying the liquor. Lamoer explained to the visitors that the facility was used to store the thousands of litres of confiscated liquor, which was kept there until court cases had been resolved. It is then disposed of safely so that it does not pose any threat to the environment. On Thursday about 14 000 litres of various types of alcohol confiscated from illegal establishments were poured down the drain.

Instant action and investigation saw Bishop Lavis police reunite a kidnapped baby with her family. During last week a one-month-old baby was taken from her mother in Bishop Lavis and on Saturday detectives got a major breakthrough. They received a call from the police in Uniondale who informed them that a member of the public saw the article on the missing baby in the local newspaper. Bishop Lavis police constables Brendan Gordon and Celeste Davids followed up on this information and drove to Uniondale to fetch the baby, now nicknamed Grace by the police, and arrest the suspected kidnapper. Grace surely crept into the hearts of police in Bishop Lavis who assisted the baby and mother with food, nappies and other baby essentials before she was handed back to the family. A 38-year-old woman from Uniondale was arrested and will appear in court during this week, on charges of kidnapping, but they are expected to make more arrests in relation to this crime.

Station commander Brig Christopher Jones, left, welcomes baby Grace back home, with Constables Celeste Davids and Brandon Gordon.

Job seekers find work on city’s database The City of Cape Town’s job seekers’ database is a lifeline for those struggling to find work in the city. The deputy city manager, Mike Marsden, explains that the job seekers’ database is a central electronic database of job seekers who are eligible to perform work for the city or city-appointed service providers on community-based projects or programmes. “The database is accessible at each subcouncil,” he says. To be eligible for the database, a person must be unemployed when applying and when an opportunity becomes available. The person must be a South African citizen or eligible to work if they are a foreign citizen and must reside in Cape Town.

The job seeker must also be of legal employable age and be physically fit to work in relation to the requirements of the position. Marsden points out though: “Registration on the database is not a guarantee of employment.” He says: “The selection of community members from the database for work on particular programmes or projects must be based on random electronic selection.” He explains that the short-list for suitable candidates must be limited to the relevant community for which the work is to be performed. “The person must be a resident of the particular community within which the project is to be carried out,” Marsden says. He adds that the community boundaries

will be determined by the department responsible for the service and will be stipulated in the contract documentation. The person must meet the physical requirements of the job and the process will take place at subcouncil offices under the supervision of the subcouncil manager or a designated official. “The names of successful job seekers, who have been employed for a duration exceeding two weeks, will be excluded from the job seekers’ database for a period of six months,” Marsden says. Unemployed community members can register on the job seekers’ database at their respective subcouncil offices by completing the job seeker registration form. Wellness mobiles to screen learners in Western Cape The Western Cape Government has announced a new health initiative that will expand the access to healthcare services of learners in schools in the Western Cape. The healthcare initiative is a first in the country. The Provincial Departments of Health and Education are launching a Wellness Mobile Service which will see a fleet of five state-of-the-art mobile units visiting schools across the province to screen Grade R and Grade 1 learners, particularly in poor and rural areas for conditions that require medical and dental intervention. The mobile units will also provide preventive dental care to learners. The wellness units will be staffed with professional health staff who will undertake the screening of the learners and provide diagnostic assessment and treatment options as required. Referral to health facilities will be ensured where necessary. Typical school health screening will include: learners’ vision and hearing; ear, eye and skin examinations; testing of gross and fine motor skills, mental health, speech, and tuberculosis; and oral health care. The initiative will run parallel with the current integrated school health programme service. For these five mobile wellness units the Western Cape Department of Health has budgeted R11,5 million which will contribute towards the payment of staff, fuel and other consumables. The Department of Education has allocated R12,5 million, which will cover the cost of the leasing the mobile service. This will include the driver/operator, vehicles, equipment, maintenance and support. The Western Cape Government’s initial commitment to this project will be R24 million. The first five mobile units are planned to hit the roads by mid-2014.

Bishop Lavis police on top of brazen crimes GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Police in Bishop Lavis are not allowing gangsters to rule the community. In November two constables ended up arresting one of the most wanted suspects in the area after an intense chase through the streets and a struggle that could have ended in death for both of them. On Thursday 7 November the constables Raymond Plaatjies and Nigel Msebi were on duty when a local resident reported shooting taking place in Eleanor Street, Bonteheuwel. When they got there the community gave them more information and they spotted a suspect further down the street and gave chase on foot. Plaatjies headed off in a different direction to Msebi hoping to cut the suspect off in the next street. He ended up clambering onto the roof off a shack in the area from where he spotted his colleague in pursuit of the suspect, luckily straight in his direction. As he tried to arrest the suspect he noticed that he was armed but this did not deter him.

Struggle A struggle then ensued as the policeman tried to disarm the suspect who was trying to pull the trigger as they fought. Luckily Plaatjies got the gun away from the suspect and handed it to Msebi, but he was not giving in easily as he tried to grab

the policeman’s weapon, calling on friends to help overpower the lawmen. By that time more policemen had arrived and the situation was brought under control with the suspect arrested. Investigation revealed that the gun on the suspect, who has affiliations to the Rude Boys and 28s, was fully loaded and had its serial number filed off. The suspect turned out to be Virgil Jonas, 21, already a suspect wanted for murder, from Borriehout Street, who now also faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, theft of a firearm, pointing of firearm, resisting arrest and damage to state property.

Gun Police also had another success in relation to an incident that happened earlier this year. On January 30, at approximately 21:30 the owner of a shop in Gloxinia Street, Kalksteenfontein, was at his shop when three males entered his shop. One of them drew a gun and ordered him to give them all the money; he only had R900 in the store and gave it to him. When the police arrived at the scene the owner gave the police a description of the suspect and he was found in Gloxinia Street by Constable Brandon Gordon. Further investigation by Detective Constable Ettiene Lerm has resulted in Latief Ruyaad, 22, facing 15 years behind bars after being found guilty in a court of law in November.

Minimum wage increase for domestics Minimum wages for domestic workers in urban municipal areas have been increased by 7.6 % as from 1 December and will remain applicable until 30 November next year. This in terms of the Sectoral Determination for the domestic worker sector legislation. The minimum wage increases in the rural municipal areas are to be increased by 8.6 %. South Africa has enacted legislation to protect domestic workers resulting in the promulgation of Sectoral Determination 7: Domestic Workers. This determination establishes conditions of employment and minimum wages for employees in the Domestic Worker Sector in South Africa, Bernard Reisner, an industrial relations consultant of Cape Labour & Industrial Consultants, said in a press release. With effect from 1 November 2002, an em-

ployer must pay a domestic worker at least the minimum wage prescribed. The new hourly minimum rate for a domestic worker who works more than 27 hours a week is R9,63, the new weekly minimum rate is R433,35 and new monthly minimum rate is R1 877,70. The new hourly minimum rate for a domestic worker who works less than 27 hours a week is R11,27, the new weekly minimum rate is R304,29 and the new monthly minimum rate is R1 318,48. Reisner has published a booklet which outlines all the requirements of the law pertaining to domestic workers. The booklet is entitled You, Your Domestic Worker and the New Laws. It can be obtained by contacting Reisner on 021 423 3959 or bernard@capelabour.co.za. V Also visit www.capelabour.co.za.

Neighbourhood watch foils rape attempt GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Riverton Estate Residents’ Association is making a major difference in fighting crime in their community. At midnight on Saturday their Neighbourhood Watch team rescued a young mother of three from being raped on the open field in Lakeside Street. Association chairperson, Steve Ross, said that he is very proud that their team was able to save this woman. “The woman resides in Pinetree Village and she was attacked by a man on the field who wrestled her to the ground. “Fortunately our patrol vehicle was in the

area and we saw the struggle in the darkness as we shone our lights on them. “The man had already undressed and exposed himself and was busy ripping the woman’s clothes off, when we tackled and apprehended him.”

Swift Ross went on to applaud the local police for their swift response and the suspect was arrested and faces a charge of attempted rape. He also found it ironic that this happened so early in the campaign of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, but pointed out that the organisation had reported that the floodlights on this

field needed to be fixed in July already. “We have sent them numerous emails in this regard because there have already been some muggings here. “The floodlights are located next to 41 Riverton Crescent and when it functions, it illuminates the entire field up to Lakeside Street. “These floodlights have been off since Tuesday 23 July and we have reported the faulty lights before, but nothing has been done to date. “The festive season is coming up and we would not want any news of crimes happening there, if it could have been prevented by the simple task of having the lights switched on.”

Let’s all do good, let’s all forgive bad What inside seemingly good people makes them do really bad things? What motivates them to one day just silence their conscience, turn a blind eye and hurt, devastate, abuse and neglect? And they live among us. They work with us, do their Christmas shopping with us, wave at us, laugh with us, give presents, share – care even. They will discuss the horrific impact of violence, crime, vandalism and corruption in our beautiful country and its people with you. They will shake their heads at the devastation of war to people and infrastructure, how “fighting for a cause” can border on the ridiculous. They will wonder what motivates people to be senseless and heartless abusers of innocent women and children with you, how they could simply neglect their own father, mother or grandparents. They will get all upset about the maltreatment of animals with you, how people can leave them at home or at the roadside, without even batting an eyelid. They will consider reasons why some people can be so manipulative, unscrupulous and selfish, that with lies and deceit they will do anything to get what they want, regardless of the consequences to others’ feelings, circumstances, belongings or even lives. Yes, we all wonder, but many of us “good people” have dirty hands too – cupboards full of skeletons. It’s the season of giving. Let’s make ourselves guilty of giving the good and forgiving the bad – in all areas of life.

Of dink julle miskien hulle sal as afskrikmiddel dien teen inbrekers? ANTIKEFKEF Stellenberg

Buy Proudly South African as a rule Your letters and SMS columns seem to contain multiple concerns about buying South African-made clothing. I have repeatedly approached all the major clothing retailers on this matter. I’ve spoken to shop staff and managers, and even written directly to the head offices of these retailers. The response I have received is

utterly dismal! The head offices either refuse to respond or they respond with rude letters that basically tell me to EFF-off! The staff and managers in the shops all promise to escalate the matter but those are as good as the electioneering promises of “a better life for all”… Despite drawing attention to the vast socio-economic benefits and direct benefits to individuals, these greedy self-obsessed retailers for the most part flatly refuse to support South Africanmade products. I have refused to buy imported clothing since May 2012, but I will reluctantly support SADC country’s products as that at least keeps their people in their countries and does not adversely affect our unemployment. It is only by reduced sales that these idiots will realise the need to amend their purchasing patterns. And in case you’re wondering, no, SA-made goods are not more costly than imported – well, not at retail level! Actively demand South African-made clothing. Revive our economy. Keep people at work and out of our houses! Reduce crime. Reduce insurance premiums. Be Proudly South African – even if the government sucks! BRIAN COX Durbanville

Employ them with a broom and bag Recently I observed the large amount of leaves and dirt that collected in the gutter next to our street. This of course ends up in the drain next time it rains and eventually blocks the drain. So when someone rang the doorbell asking for a job or some money I replied: Sure, I’ll give you a broom and a refuse bag and if you sweep the gutter from the top corner to the bottom corner on both sides and put the dirt in the bag I

will pay you 20 bucks. The offer was gladly accepted and he was back after about 40 minutes with two full bags to collect payment and actually did a fine job. I think this is a win win proposal so next time someone knocks on your door asking for a job – go fetch your broom and a refuse bag. WILLIE Sonstraal

Lost my trust in the police service Our house in Bellville had been broken into and robbed on Friday afternoon. I received a phone call from my fiancé that he had contacted the police at 17:15, the time he arrived home. He told them that he was afraid to enter the house as he thought the criminals could still be in there. I arrived home at 17:45 and no sign of police. I contacted them again and was told the team was busy and they should be there any minute. At 18:00 all lines were engaged. At 18:10 I contacted them, to be told they had just changed shift and the previous shift have not informed them about the complaint. I was furious. They eventually pitched up at 19:10 and looked very uninterested. The two policeman didn’t even go to all the rooms that had been violated and started their report. We were informed that they know about a drug house in the area but don’t have enough evidence to obtain a warrant. The law also states if a person enters my property, I cannot harm them unless I am being attacked. I know SAPS cannot change the law but why let the criminals get away with it because you are changing shift? I have lost my trust in the SAPS, the department of government that is supposed to protect its law abiding citizens. TAMSYN SMIT Web letter

FC CAPE TOWN: EYES EUROPEAN MARKET

Youth coach impressed THOMAS CAROLUS

F

C Cape Town have underlined their commitment to youth with the appointment of development coach Thomas Trucha. Trucha, who hails from the Czech Republic, started his duties with the Parow-based club six weeks ago, tasked with nurturing the young players for the first team and ultimately preparing them for the European market. The 41-year-old, who holds UEFA A, UEFA B, and UEFA PRO badges, says he has been impressed with the structures already in

place at the club.

Focus “My first experience was that the players have been given very good conditions in order for them to focus on their jobs as professional footballers. The club owner, Errol Dicks, is a very hard working man and he demands the same attitude from all people in the club. “I appreciate working with such big names in South African football, like Duncan Lechesa head coach and John Comitis,” Trucha explained. “We are now at a stage where we can build up individual pro-

grammes for players from the development department. “My challenge is to make young players understand how big their options are here at FC Cape Town. This is the first important step because if they have the bigger picture, then they’ll have a very good chance to obtain an offer from Europe. “If the players understand how big their options are, then it is sure that the club will develop more players like Emmanuel Emenike, and Hassan Wasswa.” Since Trucha’s arrival at the club, his focus has been to understand the personalities, strengths and weaknesses of all players.

He has been able to discuss his analysis with the technical team as to how they will initiate the development of each player’s physical, technical and tactical abilities. And from what he has seen so far, there is plenty of potential.

Skills “The youngsters at FC Cape Town have a very good first touch and fantastic dribbling ability. These are the first skills checked for by the European scouts. If the players work on their physical and tactical part of their game, then their time will come soon,” he concluded.

Champions again

Yaseem Petersen (4/20) was Milnerton se suksesvolste bouler.
