RESIDENTS: ‘LONG OVERDUE’

Parow roads upgraded REYANA STEYN

I

t will be smooth driving for motorists now that Parow roads are being upgraded. Improvements to Picton Road in Parow Central and all roads in Parow West kicked off on Monday. Roads will be milled out and resurfaced, and bumpy roads are being re-tarred. Other improvements will include all stop streets being repainted; replacement of road names and faulty traffic signs to be fixed. “These are busy roads and they must be

fixed,” says Rick O’ Connell, councillor of the area.

Upgrades “Hundreds of cars use the roads daily so to make things easier for people on their way to work the upgrading is taking place at night to avoid any disruptions. The upgrade to the roads will also improve the lives of motorists and the entire community as it will prevent accidents from taking place.” He says the aim of the upgrade is to beautify the area and make it safer for the commu-

nity. “All the residents in the area will be happy as this road has been problematic for a while. It will be safe for children and everyone to walk on too,” he added.

High time Parow resident Charne Hill says she uses Picton Street frequently and that “it is high time that something is being done”. “I’m glad to see that the street is finally being revamped to make it safe. “With the road in a bad condition it made

the area look bad and with the area it will look much better. It was also easy for accidents to occur.” Another resident, Justin Prins, says he is elated that the roadworks will be taking place at night. “I am happy that the road is being upgraded but also that they will only be working on the road at night and that the upgrade will not interfere while I drive to work.” O’ Connell says the full roadwork upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of February.

Hospital call centre expands Tygerberg Hospital is one of eight facilities identified for a call centre pilot project, which has proved to be highly successful in recent months. The Western Cape Government Health call centre has been available for patient complaints for five months and will roll out to all health facilities in the metro during the 2013/2014 financial year. Hélène Rossouw, spokesperson for Theuns Botha, Minister of Health: Western Cape Government, said an analysis of the average client showed that they prefer make a phone call when logging a complaint or giving a compliment. “The numbers of calls are far in the majority, compared to text messages or emails,” she says. In the five month period, 594 complaints were logged. The complaints line receives an average of six calls per day and most com-

plaints are lodged between 09:00 and 12:00. In total, during this period, 594 queries were raised of which 578 were resolved, that is 97 %. The majority of complaints are resolved within five days. Hélène says a survey by the call centre shows that patients are very satisfied with the service. At present 16 complainants are awaiting feedback. She says overall, the majority of complaints that exceed all other complaints are about waiting times. The second most common complaint is about the attitude of hospital staff towards patients. “This is exactly the value of the complaints line. It enables the department to identify the facilities that face the most challenges. Now we can target our resources towards specific problems,” says Minister Botha. Botha says the success of the pilot has

proven they can roll out the call centre to service all facilities across the province. Each financial year another district will be added to the service with the aim to offer the service to all patients across the province by 2018. At present, the call centre is available between 07:00 till 19:00 for clients from the selected health facilities which form part of the pilot project. The eight facilities identified for the pilot project are Tygerberg Hospital, Mitchell’s Plain Community Health Centre, Khayelitsha Site B Community Health Centre, Retreat Community Health Centre, Somerset Hospital, Helderberg Hospital (Somerset West), Wesfleur Hospital (Atlantis) and TC Newman Community Day Centre (Paarl). V The call centre number is 0860 142 142. To send a text message, SMS the word HELP to 31022 or email service@westerncape.gov.za.

Egpaar uit motor, kaper glip in JANA BEKKER

’n

3

Shaun Jansen, te bel by 021 918 3010.

2nd shot at maths, science Students who have passed matric but did not obtain a high score in mathematics and physical sciences, have a chance to improve their marks with the help of the successful SciMathUS programme at Stellenbosch University (SU). They will hopefully follow in the footsteps of the 2012 group, where all 104 students who wrote the final examination passed, also continuing the 100 % pass rate over the previous four years. The programme offers talented and motivated students, who are educationally disadvantaged and did not qualify to be admitted to university programmes, a second chance.

Students may apply for SciMathUS if they have passed Grade 12 with a minimum of 50 % in Afrikaans or English, a minimum of 30 % in mathematics and physical sciences, or 80 % in mathematical literacy and also 50 % in any four of the subjects designated for university admission. The students will rewrite the Grade 12 exam. Prospective students may apply for the programme until 31 January and application forms can be downloaded from the website at www.imstus.sun.ac.za/scimathus.html or alternatively phone 021 808 2301 or 021 808 3032.

Turning up heat on crime Since the inception of Operation Rubicon, much successes have been attained in the Parow area. Operation Rubicon is the brainchild of the cluster commander, Brig Darius van der Ross, W/O Jacques Mostert of the Parow police said. “A plan was devised where members from Parow such as shift, crime prevention and sector managers work during the hours in which these types of crimes are the most prevalent. “Members from Parow have also pledged to do extra duties during their time off and are also supported by detectives and members,” Mostert said. They have also been joined by members of Bellville, Bothasig and Goodwood who are also performing duties when they are on rest days. According to Brig Van der Ross, the fact that everyone is working together

shows the degree of support the cluster stations have for each other and is also a force multiplier. A large number of police members are deployed on a daily basis, some in uniform and marked vehicles, while others are in civilian clothes and unmarked vehicles. Since the inception of the operation on 11 January, good successes have been achieved as numerous arrests were made for the following crimes: possession of drugs and dangerous weapons, as well as for murder and robbery. According to Mostert besides the drugs, various other dangerous items which could have been used to commit crimes have been taken off the street. The main goal of Operation Rubicon is to turn up the heat even more on criminals in Bellville cluster, Mostert concluded.

Police nab 41 ‘drunk drivers’ Metro police officers arrested 41 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol and drug-related offences during patrols and operations across the city this weekend. Officers also issued 441 traffic fines and recorded 30 bylaw offences. On Saturday 19 January officers arrested 10 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol at a roadblock in Voortrekker Road, Parow. Another four motorists were arrested for the same offence in Atlantis. A joint operation with the SAPS resulted

in the arrest of three motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol, while another three motorists were arrested for the same offence in Parow, Bellville and the Cape Town CBD respectively. During routine patrols in the Maitland area, officers arrested one suspect for possession of illegal narcotics after he was found with dagga. Officers arrested another suspect in Lansport Road, Hanover Park, for the same offence after he was found with 18 packets of tik.

Help ensure a better life for animals JANA BEKKER A photo of a badly mistreated, cringing Rhodesian Ridgeback cross, is stuck onto Sue Blias garage wall. The photo shocks and one can’t help but wonder if this poor dog had to be put down. Seconds later, at the sight of a second photo (alongside the first) of a healthy, happy animal, sheer relief washes over you, as you realise this skin-and-bone dog was nurtured back to perfect health. This is the kind of change the Karoo Animal Protection Society (KAPS) makes in the lives of animals. Sue and Gloria Pitlou started a KAPS branch in Bellville in 2007 and six years later, they are still doing everything in their power to ensure a better future for animals of the Little Karoo. All the items for sale are donated. At the moment they have a Sylvac Green rabbit, a special collector’s item. Sales are held at Sue’s home in Ridgeworth. Iris House shows TV their ‘awesome’ kids Iris House in Welgelegen started 2013 with a bang. On Friday 11 January, some of the Iris House families, care team members and founder Sue van der Linde, were filmed live on the popular youth show Hecticnine9 on SABC 2. Iris House is committed to enriching the quality of life for special needs children and young people with life-limiting or lifethreatening conditions and providing support for their families. Presenter Danilo interviewed Sue on the set finding out what the centre offers and also highlighting the needs of Iris House in 2013 – namely that they need a house. Sue explained that they were hard at work raising funds to purchase their own property after a property on the grounds of Karl Bremmer Hospital fell through. The other Hecticnine9 presenter Ayanda spoke with some of the families and children getting a big hug from Julia Wright, one of the Iris House children, who simply loves the show. Iris House appealed for support to make the goal of R2 million rand in 2013 to purchase their own property a reality. They also encouraged people with a passion for children in the northern suburbs to join their growing volunteer team. “Iris House has a holistic approach to caring for special needs children, this extends to educating people as to how to respond to special needs children they may encounter in their day to day lives,” said Sue. “We are thrilled that South Africa got to see some of our awesome children on TV and realise they are just children and are not to be feared.” The children, parents and care givers were treated to snacks and tons of fun backstage, and despite this being a very long afternoon with rehearsals for the children every-

one had a wonderful time on the set. Iris House would like to thank the Hecticnine9 crew and SABC 2 for giving them the opportunity to highlight the needs of special needs children everywhere. If you would like to make a contribution to this much-needed service you can donate securely via their website www.iris-house.org or contact them on 021 559 0800. Should you have time on your hands and would like to volunteer then please contact sue@iris-house.org for more information

A dog that had been living on her own for about four months at the Cobble Walk shopping centre in Durbanville, has been captured recently and is now looking for a lovable forever home. The dog, which has a keen preference for KFC, has either run away from home or has been abandoned by her original family. “Whichever it was, no family has come forward to claim her so far,” said Joan Masterson of the Petfinders organisation. “She evaded capture for months until we managed to secure a humane dog trap from the SPCA. “We put some KFC in it and finally managed to rescue this little dog on Sunday 13 January. “She has turned out to be a real little darling – very playful, loves people and other dogs and loves playing with kids,”

Missy is looking for a forever home after finally being captured.

said Masterson. They now need to find a home for her as the man who rescued her, has three large Alsations who are not taking too kindly to her. “However, we found that she has become very attached to her ‘rescue daddy’ as a home was found for her with a family with a labrador. “The two dogs got on like a house on fire – until the ‘rescue daddy’ left!” she said. Missy, as the dog is now called, escaped through a window to try and follow her “rescue daddy” after he left and he had to turn around and go through a whole process of searching for her again until she was found. “So, she has what might be called separation issues. “We are looking for someone that will adopt her who is at home most of the day, has a very secure yard and who will give her special love and attention so that she can become an integrated part of a family again. She would have to be an inside doggy. So far we have not found that special person or family. “She is black and white, three years old and the cutest little dog out. She is medium-sized and in very good health. “She will be spayed before placing at her new home.” Anyone interested in adopting her, can contact Leon Butor on 021 976 1720 (o) or 082 887 7352 with enquiries. A strict home check will be done before Missy is placed with anyone and followups about her well-being will also be done.

nie, was ek baie verveeld,” sê hy.

Eddie gaan nou tydelik by sy ma-hulle in Parow-Noord tuis. Hy het môre (Donderdag 24 Januarie) weer opvolgafsprake by twee dokters. Ooggetuies kan Cheri by 084 953 3569 bel.

Fate repays his good deeds Sidney Dicks (43), who is not only a father of four but also responsible for 170 children at the SOS Children’s Village in Thornton, Goodwood, won the grand prize in the Pick n Pay smart shopper promotion. This will see the Child and Youth Care Development co-ordinator leaving his responsibilities behind next year and making his way to London on holiday on a British Airways flight in unparalleled airline luxury. He has dedicated his life to caring for children and was previously a director at the Athlone Youth and Family Development Centre. “Working with the youth is my passion. It is said if you do what you are passionate about you will never work a day in your life, and that is the truth for me,” he said. Sidney who lives on site at the Children’s Village and is involved in any emergencies that arise, such as sick or injured children, has never won anything in his life before. “My wife and I have never been overseas so this will be our first trip,” he said. “When I was told the news I was completely overwhelmed. A friend has told me about his business class flights and I never thought I would have the opportunity to experience it.” Sidney, a keen Liverpool supporter, is planning to go during winter in 2013 to

Beakie the penguin received reconstructive surgery to his beak after he was knocked down by a vehicle in Simon’s Town. PHOTO: TRACY SHAW

Beakie can tuck in again after surgery When Beakie had an unfortunate run-in with a car in Simon’s Town in October, it was clear that dining on fish would in future present a problem for this cute penguin. Knocked down by a speeding vehicle his lower mandible was severely damaged by the impact of the car and his lower beak split in half. The bird was brought to the rehabilitation centre of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (Sanccob) in Table View where the veterinary team tried several procedures, but to no avail. Not ready to give up, Sanccob’s rehabilitation manager, Nicky Stander, consulted a former Sanccob vet, Dr Tertius Gous, who in turn got in touch with Dr Gerard Steenkamp, an experienced veterinary dentist based at the University of Pretoria. After examining photos of the penguin’s beak, Dr Steenkamp was confident that he could mend the mandible and offered to do the reconstructive surgery free of charge. Tracy Shaw, from the National Zoological Gardens (NZG) in Pretoria agreed to take care of the penguin at the zoo. With a flight-sponsorship by Bid Air Cargo (Cape Town), Beakie was flown to Johannesburg in his own personal “enclosure” and was taken to the faculty of veterinary science of the University of Pretoria in Onderstepoort in preparation for the big day. On 18 December, he underwent a CT scan and Dr Steenkamp performed the surgery. When the brave little patient came to, he had a beautiful new beak, with the help of some delicately placed stitches, pins, wire, and dental acrylic. The operation was very successful and Beakie was taken to the NZG to get back on his feet. Since the operation, Beakie has been under the post-operative care of Dr Adrian Tordiffe, who administered a 14-day course of antibiotics to fight off any potential infections to the wound. The first few days he was very sleepy and claimed a permanent spot in the colony where he dozed alongside his 32 new penguin friends. At first, he wriggled a lot during feeding times, but became more comfortable as the days went by. After three weeks, he surprised everyone at the NZG by coming right up to the bucket and taking his first fish all on his own. “Now he pushes his way to the bucket and is really starting to show his own special personality. The big adventure of Beakie has proved that the endangered African penguin is most certainly the most resilient of species, and we need to do everything in our power to help save these incredible little birds,” said Francois Louw, of Sanccob. Beakie will be flown back to Sanccob and released at Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town.

A shared passion to help others ANDRÉ BAKKES The odds of finding someone who has dedicated 20 years of his/her life to voluntary service is slim, so it is indeed a long shot to find a husband and a wife who have done this together. Gary (54) and Shirley Müller (51) of Bothasig have been serving as volunteers for the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre since the 90s. They have seen riots, blazing fires, fatal accidents, gunshot and stab wounds, and people in desperate need. Alternatively, they have also witnessed tears of joy, rejuvenation, reconciliation and hugs that seem to last forever. Making a difference for no compensation is probably the most noble thing one can do in a society that has been consumed by isolation and self-interest. They received a pat on the back by the city in December last year at the first annual Disaster Risk Management Volunteer Awards – along with 104 other volunteers. The volunteers’ “outstanding dedication to duty”, equates to 985 years of voluntary service to safeguard Cape Town. About 45 of those years were contributed by the Müller-family, who are currently based in the Milnerton unit. Says Gary: “I started in May 1990 and Shirley started one year after me. Those days it was Civil Defence and then changed to Civil Protection. It started when we took our son to an open day at Milnerton fire station. There was a stall that elaborated a bit on this volunteer programme and I thought it was fascinating!” Gary’s love for first-aid was the catalyst for his enlistment and since then he has used this knowledge to save hundreds of lives. Just this Saturday he started at 18:30 and only signed off at 03:30. In this time they attended to a motor accident, a stabbing incident of a youngster, a house robbery in Table View and a suspected heart attack at Killarney racetrack. It often happens that injured or sick people are taken to the fire station before they go to the hospital, so one moment the volunteers could be keeping themselves busy in the operations room and then they are tasked with emergency CPR. Gary spent more than 400 hours last year doing voluntary work at the Milnerton unit. He also works for ER24, so there is precious little “Gary-time”. Shirley used to be more active in the the care and comfort section of the unit, but these days she has become less involved due to the demands of her daytime job at Trafalgar Property Manage-

Shirley and Gary Müller proudly hold their Disaster Risk Management Volunteer Award certificates. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES ment. When asked why people should consider becoming volunteers she responds: “The medical staff we have at the moment are so over-worked. People sit on their backsides and do nothing! Why don’t they give something back to the community?” Gary is also the chairperson of the local neighbourhood watch, part of the community policing forum and has previously helped out at the victim support unit. “Youngsters from as young as 16 can become volunteers at the Milnerton unit, which keeps them off the streets. Over the years there have also been many who used this as a stepping stone to become firefighters and paramedics,” he adds. Gary and Shirley’s stories captivate one and all, so in many ways they are compensated in experiences and a feeling of making a difference. Sometimes they will just walk around in some mall then someone will come up to them and thank them for saving someone’s life or delivering a baby. “Half of Du Noon can be named after me – since I delivered them into this world!” laughs Gary. Volunteers enlisted with the city have played an important role in assisting during major incidents and disasters in Cape Town, such as major wildfires, flooding and fires in the informal settlements and even dealing with oil spills along the coastline. V Contact Gary on 083 402 9218 if you want to join any of the organisations he belongs to.

Civic Honours a great accolade As of this Monday (21 January), residents can nominate individuals or military units for Civic Honours. These prestigious awards recognise South African citizens who have followed responsibilities which include, excellence in upholding the rights of others; serving others above oneself; or contributing to nationbuilding through outstanding service and achievements. Individuals, organisations and military units that have distinguished themselves are acknowledged through extraordinary acts of service or outstanding contributions to their community and the city. The awards are given in terms of the City’s Civic Honours Policy, which was adopted by Council on 3 December 2008. The policy identifies the following main categories for awards: V The Mayor’s Medal which acknowledges outstanding contributions that are made voluntarily by individuals or associations in various fields, such as community affairs; social affairs and services; cultural affairs; youth affairs; recreation and sport; conservation; economic affairs; and extraordinary bravery. V Freedom of the City is an award given to individuals, military units or organisations which have distinguished themselves through heroic service. There are currently three living Freemen of the City: former state president and Nobel

laureate Nelson Mandela; Nobel laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; and former chancellor for the University of the Western Cape, Dr Richard van der Ross. V The signing of the Civic Honours Book which is an invitation for a person to sign or inscribe their name against a citation of their achievement in the “Civic Honours Book”. V Freedom of entry into the City is an accolade which is only given to military units, to recognise the outstanding service to their country and city. Military units that receive this honour may march through the streets of Cape Town during all ceremonial and other occasions with ”swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying”. A Civic Honour may be nominated on behalf of a living person or in memory of a deceased person. All the nominations must be presented in writing, indicating the honour to be bestowed and include an adequate motivation. The public are invited to submit their nominations through post to the Office of the Executive Mayor, Private Bag X9181, Cape Town 8000 or via email to Levona.Africa@capetown.gov.za before Friday 22 February. The Civic Honours Policy is available on the city’s website at www.capetown.gov.za/ policies; or a copy can be obtained by phoning 021 400 5841.

TYGERBURGER | ELSIESRIVIER Woensdag, 23 Januarie 2013

So, toe ek haar goed leer ken, het ek geweet hierdie is my lewensmaat.”

Bespreek by 021 979 1911 of 083 406 0111.

Music Exchange brings the entire industry together Music Exchange, South Africa’s two-day independent music conference that gets everyone in the music industry talking, is set to take place on 21 and 22 March. Music Exchange brings the industry together to discuss, debate, collaborate and get down to the business of making music. Every year it offers artists, industry professionals and like-minded individuals the chance to network, exchange ideas and catch up on the latest industry trends. In 2013 Music Exchange has taken it a step further by creating a digital album from selected artists interested in uploading their demo on http://www.soundcloud.com/musicexchange/dropbox thereby qualifying them to be selected to feature on this collaboration album, celebrating the continuing rise of South African music. All attending artists’ submissions will

be considered for selection. Artists will also be selected to perform at a showcase and are requested to upload their demos together with a photograph and a short biography no later than Friday 15 March 2010. Over the years Music Exchange has had a number of success stories. A collaboration between Evolver One and international promoter and manager, Doug Davenport at the 2010 Music Exchange conference was key to the group successfully recording their third album. This yielded four radio hits. For 7th Son the introduction to Stuart Rubin, former BMG marketing director, at the 2009 conference led them to re-record the Australian hit “The Boys Light Up”, which went on to became their first hit. The event is at the Cape Town City Hall. For more information, or to book, visit www.musicexchange.co.za.

Bianca lifts junior golf trophy Bianca Theron (Devonvale GC - Boland) recently won the Nomads WGWP Junior Championships with an impressive four shots at the Metropolitan Golf Club. Bianca who resides in Brackenfell shot two rounds of 69 finishing on 138. JiSun Kang (Altantic Beach) finished second on 142 shots and Durbanville star Kelly Erasmus a shot further back on 143. From the outset the tournament was expected to be highly contested with eight of the top 10 juniors in the country competing. After Round 1, Mae Cornforth from Potchefstroom CC (North West) led the field on two under par 68, with Bianca one shot behind. In third position, JiSun was level par 70 and Kelly two shots behind on 72. With near perfect conditions, everything was set up for an exciting second round in

the afternoon. After the front nine Bianca was level par for her second round, with JiSun one shot behind and Kelly two shots behind. On the back nine, JiSun’s approach shot on the par 5, 12th hole cost her, whilst Bianca cemented her lead with a birdie on the par 4, 13th hole to finish the second round on one under par 69 giving her victory. JiSun finished the second round on two over par to claim second place and also lift the Prentice Cup – Best Gross 36 Holes – Closed (WP), as the highest placed Western Province player with a score of 142 (70,72). This follows JiSun’s second place at the Boland Junior Championships earlier in the week. After a difficult first round Cara Gorlei from Milnerton GC had a level par 70 second round to secure fifth position on 147 (77,70).

Fairways for Badisa Badisa Tygerberg will host a golf day on 1 March at the Bellville Golf Club. This welfare organisation that takes care of families and empowers individuals, families and communities to sustain their relationships within the family unit hopes to raise funds with this event. Badisa is only partially subsidised by the government, therefore the organisation relies on the generosity and support of

donors, which enables them to attend to specific and the general needs of the communities and the establishment of sustainable development programmes. Four-balls including a light supper and goodie bag cost R1 200. Sponsors can also advertise at a hole for R1 200. Phone Fransie on 082 441 7667 or 021 939 9120 to stroll the fairways for Badisa.

Just hanging to be king of the air

Ruben Lenten in action at Big Bay, Bloubergstrand where the Red Bull King of the Air extreme kiteboarding event will take place from 1 to 15 February.

Next month Bloubergstrand will play host to one of the most extreme kiteboarding events in the world. The Red Bull King of the Air competition is all about height and hang time and in a week from now kiters from across the world will be counting on our Cape Doctor to provide just that. The event started in 1999 and was held in Hawaii in 2005 for the last time where Dutch kiteboarder Ruben Lenten took the honours. “Since the inception of this event in 1999, the jumps became bigger and bigger” says Lenten who competed against sports legend Robby Naish in the final in Hawaii. It was a dream come true for the young daredevil who is continuously tracking storms around the world, in search of the next biggest ride. Since 2005 the King of the Air event has taken a break but this year it is back in full force. Lenton along with 23 other top riders will push themselves to the limits in search of maximum fly time. The event will take place at Big Bay between 1 and 15 February depending on weather conditions. During this event 16 of the world’s best kiteboarders who were invited by the King Of The Air committee and eight wildcard competitors who were chosen by sending in their most extreme tricks, will battle it out for honours. There is only one South African among the invited kiters, Luke McGillewie. Lenten is surely one of the favourites to take this year’s title. Despite the King of the Air competition not being held for the last seven years, Lenten has not been idle. The clip Ruben Lenten produced together with Red Bull and Eyeforce shows his most important goal in life: “Fly hard”. “The clip was created when I had the idea to capture my signature style of extreme kiteboarding. “This is only possible when the conditions are perfect. In the clip we have been monitoring the wind forecasts at different spots to get the ultimate storm. “The predictions for Ireland looked perfect, but unfortunately the storm lost all its power overnight and it was impossible to fly high enough. “Miraculously an even better storm appeared on the radar for the Netherlands. “I could not believe my eyes, exactly what we needed. A real Dutch autumn storm. It was the perfect playground for me,” he said. “In South Africa and in the Netherlands we organised two extreme kiteboarding events to help young talented riders get better and prepare themselves for the Red Bull King of the Air,” Lenton said. V To keep track of the Red Bull King of the Air competition join their Facebook Page or visit http://redbullkingoftheair.co.za. See what heights Ruben Lenten can achieve with the right weather conditions on YouTube.

KRIEKET: TOPVERTONINGS IN WP SE EERSTE LIGA

Keen young footie talent on show THOMAS CAROLUS

MCSA/OLD MUTUAL/TYGERBURGER/4289/E

Football fans can looked forward to an exciting display of Western Cape’s young talent at the Trinitarians Football club’s sixth annual Easter Tournament for the under-13 age group, which takes place at the Uitsig Sports Ground, Elsies River from 30 March to 1 April. Over the years it has grown from strength to strength - changing the football landscape. The 2013 version promises to be another exciting tournament filled with thrills and spills. For the youth in Cape Town, especially in our disadvantaged areas, it is an opportunity to get expo-

sure in the game of soccer but more than that it is also a means to express themselves and enhance their leadership skills. “To win is not everything and sometimes too much emphasis is placed on winning and not enough emphasis is placed on the individual’s development,” says the spokesman for the club Martin Keith Julie. The total prize money up for grabs is R7 000. The two teams contesting the final will each receive playing kit valued at R1 500 per team. The closing date for entries is Monday 4 March 2013 and the entrance fee per team is R400. For more information contact Robert Pretorius on 082 082 4419 or Martin Keith Julie on 084 222 1482.
