Great goals are in sight for the Bishop Lavis Development Forum after a meeting held on Saturday.

More than 60 members of the community representing schools, learners, sports codes, transport as well as related NGOs and interested organisations, got together at Bishop Lavis High School to adopt the organisation’s vision and constitu-

tion, as well as form committees for the various sectors in the organisation.

Welcoming the attendees Roshin Ramawoothar, deputy principal of John Ramsay High, reminded the meeting about the importance of this initiative and the need to build a better Bishop Lavis and surrounds.

“The work done here today is to secure a better and prosperous community, to move away from the past and build up a strong community

that takes ownership of their own environment.

“We must all take responsibility for our actions and show that our goals are attainable. We must mobilise Bishop Lavis now!”

Another member Keith Daniels also outlined the ethos of the forum emphasising the importance of staying true to the purpose of the organisation.

“We must not listen to ‘hearsay’,” he said.

“Our aim is to respect and support the leaders of the the forum because they need all the support they can get to make our goals come true.

“This initiative is for the greater Bishop Lavis, not one individual or area, and it must not be used to serve our own interests but that of the forum and the executive.”

The sectors involved in the forum are: Safety and Security, Religious groups, Small Business, Health Services, Sport, Education, Transport, Youth Development, and needs of the differently abled.

Each of these sectors will be meeting separately with their elected officials to formulate their own goals and visions for projects in the area.

‘Help police to fight crime’ “You’re helping to fight crime in your community.”

Adonis estimates the street value of the dagga siezed, to be in the region of R100 000.

The suspect faces charges for the illegal possession and dealing in dagga and will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court this week.

In another incident four men were arrested on the R300 when they conned a local resident out of his ATM card and very cunningly withdrew cash from his account.

On Friday 9 March, at about 16:30 the victim attempted to draw money from the ATM at the Caltex Garage in Delft Main Road, when he was distracted by men who offered him help.

During the distraction the men swapped his card and slipped away.

According to her, local SAPS personnel and members of the National Intervention Unit responded to information provided by the public and searched a house in Freedom Farm in Delft.

The victim reported that he received an SMS informing him that the suspects had withdrawn R800 from his account.

Police recovered the cash withdrawn, several ATM cards and four cellphones used during the crime.

The suspects will also appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court this week.

African Drum falls silent The drums are silent at a local nitespot after complaints from neighbours.

The City of Cape Town’s Liquor Enforcement Unit partnered with the South African Police Services to inspect African Drum, a nightclub in Elsies River, during the early hours of Thursday 8 March.

This followed complaints from members of the public about loud music.

Officers confiscated four of the club’s amplifiers, given that the owner ignored previous notices issued regarding the creation of a noise nuisance.

The equipment will only be released once the city is satisfied that the establishment has met all of the necessary requirements and that no further complaints have been received from the community.

The Liquor Enforcement Unit will continue to conduct operations like this in residential areas here complaints are received from residents.

Themkinkosi Mvoto (32), from 10 Talani Street, Zonne­ dal in Kraaiforntein went missing af­ ter his Blue Mazda 3 was found aban­ doned on the R300 in Delft on Satur­ day 18 February at about 12 noon.

At the time of his disappearance he was wearing blue jeans, a navy and red golf T­shirt and white Puma tak­ kies. He is originally from the Eas­ tern Cape and only stayed in Kraai­ fontein for the last three months.

Take a stand against crime The Ravensmead Community Police Forum is planning a march against crime for Wednesday 21 March.

Starting at 09:00 it will begin at the park next to the police station in Christian Street, then proceed to St Andrews High School in Owen Road.

With this march they aim to inform and educate people about crime and crime rela-

ted issues in Ravensmead, Cravenby, Uitsig and Eureka.

All the churches, community organisations and people from these communities are hereby invited to join this march to take a stand against crime and claim their communities back.

I’ve been a resident of Elsies River for many years and the vandalism in my area is getting out of hand.

They’ve burgled my house in broad daylight, they’ve stolen my water meter, all outside taps have been replaced by plastic ones as they have all been stolen, they stripped my outside toilet of all copper fittings, brass numbers were stolen off my wall, the mat on my front stoep is missing, the drain cover in my driveway has been stolen, plants have been stolen out of my garden.

The neighbours in my area have all had their water meters and also other items stolen and these thieves don’t care about the inconvenience they cause.

When the council guys were busy repairing my water leak after the water meter was stolen in the middle of the night, a trolleypushing couple passed them.

The woman distracted them while the guy stole an axe off the truck.

Saturday will also be super with legendary N2 in action, more Dance Extravaganza, Abby (also known as Koekie), the Little Dynamics Jazz Band, and a Magic Show.

Apart from this entertainment there will also be a variety of stalls selling some tasty treats and lots of bargains.

For the young and the young at heart there’s also the funfair with its rides and swings.

Rugby fans are also catered for with the rugby featured on the big screen with suitable refreshments on hand.

Admission to the carnival is R20 for adults, and R10 fr children. Parking is available at R10. Security is also important with police and security presence throughout the event.

We have people pushing shop trollies down our street daily and even during the night. What sane people will push trollies around in the early hours of the morning?

I believe the local shebeen in our area also buys some of the scrap from these guys.

In the past vagrants used to knock on our door for food (after they’ve had their “spirits”) and we got to know them but this lot is different.

They knock on the door for food but look around for what they can steal. If I take too long to answer the door then they walk to the backyard scouting around for things to steal.

With it now being lent (a time for giving to the poor) I don’t feel I want to give anything. Residents in other areas of Elsies River are also complaining about vandalism.

It is time that the residents of Elsies River stand together and stamp out vandalism.

This event came just two days before the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, in which a handful of blind and visually impaired cyclists from all over the country take part.

These cyclists not only overcome exhaustion, but also the obstacle of being visually impaired.

The cyclist in the front of the tandem bike is called a pilot and the visually impaired person in the back is called a stoker.

According to the local Lions president, Martin Kallis, the club is very proud of its work with visually impaired people.

“I have a passion for the blind people who ride in the Argus! For us it’s a huge thing.

Chairperson of the SA Tandem Association of the Western Cape, Allen Swartz, says about 40 visually impaired people took part in Sunday’s Argus.

Swartz only has good things to say about their relationship with the Lions.

“We are so amazed that there are people who have so much love and kindness in this world. We depend on people who can see to practise this sport,” he says. . Meanwhile, on Monday TygerBurger heard that one of the visually impaired cyclists, Cindy Jacobsz, and her pilot, Mickey Minie, were involved in an accident just 16km from the Argus finish line.

Minie has been released from hospital with bruised ribs, but Jacobsz was still being treated for a broken pelvis at the time of going to press.

Musiekleiers byeen vir indaba Van die land se voorste komponiste, musici, musiekonderwysers en bedryfsleiers in die musiekarena, trek van 25 tot 28 Maart by die Musieksentrum Hugo Lambrechts in Parow saam vir SAVMO (Suid-Afrikaanse Vereniging vir Musiekonderwysers) se jaarlikse kongres.

Eben Wagenstroom van Elsiesrivier is ’n beurswenner wat by die Hugo Lambrechts se SAVMO­kongres ge­ lukgewens sal word.

Die onderliggende tema is die volhoubaarheid van musiek as loopbaanrigting en die aanbieders sal kenners op hulle gebied wees.

As gasheer nooi Leon Hartshorne, uittredende president van SAV-

MO en direkteur van Hugo Lambrechts, alle lede van die vereniging asook nie-lede wat by musiekonderrig betrokke is, hartlik uit om met eweknieë te kom skouers skuur.

Vir musiekonderwysers skop die kongres op 26 Maart om 08:30 af met die vereniging se algemene jaarvergadering, gevolg deur die amptelike opening en eerste aanbiedings van 14:00 af. Die aanbiedings begin met ’n lesing oor kopiereg deur SAMRO en ’n groepbespreking oor die skep van nuwe komposisies en improvisasies deur SA komponiste, onder

leiding van prof. Zelda Potgieter van UPE. Die eerste dag se verrigtinge loop van 19:00 af ten einde met die presidentsrede en ’n beurswennerskonsert deur twee Kaapse pianiste Eben Wagenstroom van Elsiesrivier en wenner van die Gladwellbeurs en Artscape se 2012-nasionale jeugmusiekkompetisie, en François Botha, wenner van die Kathleen Irish-beurs.

The music vibe is coming alive in the community!

There’s the Cape Town International Jazz Festival happening at the end of the month, but before that you can warm up with local sounds at Jazz on the Lawns at Bevcan Sportground on Saturday 24 March, and its just been announced that the same venue will be hosting a major Gospel Music Festival, Gospel on the Lawn, on the Sunday after the jazz festival.

Starting at 10:00 on Sunday 25 March, the festival will feature top groups and artists including the likes of Gospel diva Bella, and groups like New Birth, Kunjalo, and Jesus Company that will feature guitar virtuoso Allou April.

Veterans Tommy Saaiden and Walter Brown will also share the stage with their contemporaries.

Organiser Calvin Peters, who is also hosting the jazz event, said that there were many requests to host such an event by the public.

“For me the jazz goes hand in hand with the gospel side of things because many of our young jazz musicians come from the gospel field, and want to showcase their talents to the public.

“With this event we want to show the public the amazing talent that there is among the people and invite families to come and enjoy themselves with a family picnic day with great music,” he said.

The event will be preceded by a Praise and Worship service from 09:00 to 10:00 conducted by Tommy Saaiden.

“This is not just for those patrons who wish to come early and get a good spot,” continued Peters.

“But it is also for those not wanting to miss out on their Sunday church service.”

Festival-goers are encouraged to enjoy a family picnic on the lawn by bringing along their gazebos, beach umbrellas and fold-up chairs.

The festival is children-friendly and includes a play area with jumping castles and games. Safe and secure paid parking facilities have been put in place at selected factories in the area.

Tickets are being sold through various churches and religious organisations. Gas braais and open fires are not allowed but an area has been demarcated for this purpose. Alcohol will not be sold or allowed at the event. There’ll be various food stalls as well as arts and crafts markets.

Bevcan Sportsground is situated on the corner of Bofors Circle and Goodenough Avenue in Epping Industry (off Viking Ave and Vanguard Drive).

Tickets are R100 pre-purchased or R120 at the door, children under-10 are free while those between 10 and 15 pay half.

Back to basics for karate clubs The Eerste River club of Funakoshi Karate South Africa recently took part in a tournament at Camps Bay High School.

All the clubs in the Western Cape areas took part in this “Back to basics” tournament of Funakoshi Karate South Africa, under the leadership of Shihan Sanette Smit.

She is an eighth dan in this style and has 42 years’ of experience in the sport.

The aim of this tournament was to go back to the basics of karate. Students took part in kumite (fighting) and grading forms (set of combined basic movements).

Senpai Eben Shepherd who leads the Eerste River club was very proud of their achievements.

“We had eight students taking part, including myself, and we brought home a total of 12 medals,” he said.

“I feel very proud of my students, bearing in mind that some of these students only had one month of training and our club is only three months old.

“This shows you that anybody of any age can take part in karate, it is never too late to start.

“Karate is not only a sport, but also a way of living. I take this opportunity to thank our Shihan Sanette; she is truly a great master. I urge anybody to take part in this wonderful sport.”

Senpai Eben achieved a gold medal in the veteran kumite (fighting) division.

Triathlon growing in SA Team Simply Store, a local team of amateur triathletes finished off their triathlon season with multiple podium finishes at all the local races and a grand finale at the recent 11 Global/WP champs.

Five team members have been selected to represent Western Province at the SA champs in Port Elizabeth later this month.

The team comprises of eight athletes racing in age categories from 19 to 49.

The cyclists train in their spare time as they all hold down regular jobs; some members are university students and others have their own families. Thanks to their sponsors, these athletes have

been afforded the opportunity to compete in numerous local events.

At the BSG Energade race in Worcester last year, the team did a very successful handover of training kit to development athletes.

Triathlon is a growing sport in South Africa. Annual events such as Ironman 70.3 in East London and Ironman South Africa in Port Elizabeth are now becoming increasingly popular to international athletes. These events have put South Africa on the map as an ideal location for the sport and many professionals are spending more time here to train for and compete in the various events.

Bellville, Tygerberg-klub en Durbanville was die afgelope naweek aan die wenkant in die voorlaaste reeks tweedaagse krieketwedstryde in die WP se eerste liga.

Die Universiteit Wes-Kaapland se aanspraak op die titel in die topaf-

deling het egter ietwat van ’n knou gekry toe sy kragmeting teen WPklub onbeslis geëindig het. Ondanks knap boulwerk deur Nathan Swartz (5/47) en Aviwe Mgijima (3/36) moes UWK reik na ’n groterige wentelling van 245 lopies. Dale Campbell (103*) en sy makkers het moedig probeer, maar kon net 169/8 haal. Akkurate draaiboulwerk deur Louis Delport (5/69) het Bell-

ville (204) ’n oorwinning van 18 lopies oor Victoria (126) besorg.

Vroeër het stewige bydraes met die kolf deur C. Russel (47*) en Stefan Joubert (40) die Bellvilliete op koers gehou.

Ryan Milne (99) het uitstekend walgegooi vir Edgemead teen Tygerberg-klub, maar Edgemead se 202 lopies was nie genoeg om ’n nederlaag af te weer nie. Tygerberg

(98/4) moes uiteindelik net 97 lopies vir ’n oorwinning aanteken – wat Jancan Adams (38*) se manne met gemak reggekry het.

Durbanville, wat ’n eerstebeurtvoorsprong van 109 lopies teen Primrose gehad het, het die besoekers Saterdag vir 161 lopies uitgehaal – danksy Morné Heyneke (4/22) en Mark de Stadtler (4/44) – sodat die Durbies die verlangde 53

lopies vir ’n oorwinning vermag het met nog agt paaltjies staande.

Milnerton het egter ’n donker dag op Strandfontein beleef. Ten spyte van ’n goeie veelsydige vertoning deur Robin van Harte (4/52 en 49) en Richard Holman, wat altesame 10 paaltjies in die wedstryd ingeoes het, is Milnerton (118) met 211 lopies deur Strandfontein (262/9, gesl.) verslaan.

Hierdie uitslag het meegebring dat Bellville, De Kuilen en HS Tygerberg nou al drie saam bo-aan hul afdeling in die Peter Buttner-sportliga is en daar gevolglik tot die komende Saterdag gewag sal moet word om te sien wie aanstaande week teen waarskynlik Brackenfell in die eindstryd sal speel.

De Kuilen (181/8) het Bellville (177) met behulp van ’n goeie spanpoging met twee paaltjies getroef.
