Dancing Dancing to to the the beat beat
Residents of Bouter Close in Leonsdale got together to do the Jerusalema Challenge in celebration of Heritage Day on Thursday 24 September. Valentino Stander, who stays in the area, said the ongoing gang violence never deterred mothers and children from making this challenge a success. “The mother’s took it upon themselves to practice the dance moves with the children and also arranged for braai meat for the children to celebrate the day.”. NEW VISION: ‘RESPECT FOR THE UNIFORM’
New commander in charge TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
E
lsies River police station has a new commander. With 34 years experience in the police service, Brig Mark Hartzenberg from Parow said making a difference in communities concerning safety and security is what drives his passion. He started his new journey on Monday 14 September. “I have a passion for the South African Police Service’s uniform and what it stands for. My policing journey started at the age of 18 and I was enlisted in Kimberley on 1 January 1986. I was then posted to Phillipstown, 55km from De Aar. After two years I re-
turned to Kimberley. I have worked at various police stations in the capacity as station commander in Roodepan in the Northern Cape, King William’s Town and Dimbaza in the Eastern Cape, New Brighton in Port Elizabeth, Da Gamaskop in Mossel Bay and now Elsies River.” He noted that the crimes trending in Elsies River are gang related murders and attempted murder. “The hot spots are in our gang infested areas which consist of Avonwood, Leonsdale, Clarkes Estate and Adriaanse. Recently The Range has also become a hot spot. These gang fights are mostly about territory and drug turf. Burglary of businesses is also a matter of concern especially in the Elsies
River Industrial and Epping 2 areas.” He said his vision is to create a sense of unity within the police station. “I believe if and when we are united, then we will be a stronger force to attend to our crime challenges within our precinct. I also believe that when my support structures within the police station are properly in place and know what is expected of them, then my operational structure will operate as a well-oiled machine. I have this vision of seeing Elsies River police station becoming the best police station where excellence is defined,” said Hartzenberg.
Welcome Brig Mark Hartzenberg, Elsies River police’s new station commander.
