esidents of Bonteheuwel should get ready to see changes in the area’s central business district (CBD) soon.

The town centre forms part of the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (Murp).

The objective of the R19 million upgrade is to improve the general condition, func-

tionality, attractiveness and safety of the town centre.

The Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg says the town centre in its current condition does little to encourage people to visit and spend time in the space.

“The town centre is an important component of the MURP for Bonteheuwel as it is viewed by many residents as the heart of the suburb. It has the potential to play an important role in the day to day needs of the com-

munity. It has very little to offer to prospective investors.

“The upgrade, together with accompanying initiatives which are linked to making the centre safe, clean, attractive (through beautification) and events and activations within the space, form part of the City’s holistic and integrated plan to revitalise the town centre. The idea is to encourage people to spend more time at the town centre and also to encourage investment into the area,”

says Twigg.

The CBD upgrade work comprises of three components which include: . Public space upgrade – this comprise upgrading and revitalising the hard landscaping and forecourt of the library building, including a link to the subcouncil building as well as a multi-use play space that could facilitate different activities (both active and passive).

Functional perimeter fencing – the unnecessary fencing which currently divides the buildings from one another and the space, will be removed while other portions will remain for functional purposes.

Twigg assures that businesses will not be affected during this time: “There will not be any significant detrimental implications for any business as accessibility to businesses (shops on the ground floor of the double storey building) will not be interrupted within the footprint of the upgrade during the construction work.”

Subcouncil 5 chairperson Courtney van Wyk says the project is set to uplift the community: “This will be an attraction for future investment. Once the community sees the development, it will be worthwhile.”

But local trader Nazeem Dolly says he is concerned that the upgrades will result in privatisation: “My only concern is that after the upgrades, subcouncil will make a decision to have us pay for our spots that we stand at.”

Abubakar Mitchell, a resident who stays opposite the local town centre, shares his suggestion of what can be done in the area: “We need a proper supermarket, butcher and pharmacy.” He says so many elderly people need to travel to Vangate Mall to do their shopping. This needs to change.”

Rubber to burn at Killarney Motor Show K

illarney race track will burn rubber the coming weekend as Killarney Motor Show returns. The event will give car enthusiasts an opportunity to ride along as the drivers of the E36 Cup throw their BMW 3 Series racers sideways on the Extreme Arena.

The E36 is the third-generation BMW 3 Series, built from 1990 to 2000; immensely popular in South Africa to this day, it’s regarded as one of the best-balanced and most ‘chuckable’ sports sedans ever offered to local petrol-heads. Powered by a screaming three-litre straight six, it’s a popular basis for rallycross and drifting specials.

resident of Kasteelberg Road in Bishop Lavis says she is fed-up of people dumping their dirt in the open field in front of her house.

According to the woman, who requested anonymity out of fear of victimisation, the dumping happens any time of the day, almost daily.

“One thing I’ve noticed is that these people dumping their dirt aren’t from the area. If they want to dump, they must do it in their own area or find a legal dumping ground.

“Not too long ago a dead dog was dumped there and that smell came into my house. It’s not healthy for my family and I. My grandchildren are always getting sick and I believe it’s because of this mess,” she says.

At the time of the interview, TygerBurger noticed two young school girls walking along the pathway pinching their noses due to the foul smell.

According to Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg, a budget of more than R110 million is set aside for illegal dumping each year.

“Dumping occurs daily in all areas of the city, and it is simply not possible for cleaning staff to be in all areas at all times of the day. It is crucial that we work together in the fight against grime, by not littering or dumping, and reporting those who do.

Limberg says if illegal dumping stops, the millions of Rand budgeted for illegal dumping can be used in other areas.

“Law-abiding residents suffer the consequences of decisions made by those who choose not to dispose of their waste in a safe and legal manner. But in order for this to change, we need their help in reporting offenders.

“The untidiness of an area is not due to a lack of cleaning, but some residents who choose to dump their litter along a walk-way and other public spaces, instead of in the bins.”

Residents are urged to report illegal dumping in their community by calling the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089 or 0860 103 089, or, if they have the culprit’s vehicle registration number and/or can identify him/her, they should call 021 400 6157 or email solidwaste.bylaw@capetown.gov.za with the relevant information.

Limberg says any person found to be dumping illegally is issued with a Section 56 written notice, which includes a fine of R5 000 and the dumper may have his or her vehicle impounded. “The dumper is also liable for an impoundment release fee of R8 426 before they can reclaim their vehicle.”

Being rated on the wrong water pipe size, some residents in Cape Town continue to be unknowingly overcharged by the City of Cape Town, since the inception of the controversial fixed water charge in July 2018. This levy is based on the water pipe/meter connection size to your property, and was instituted to cover the costs of water reticulation, following the loss of water revenue after the drought.

A pipe 15 mm in diameter currently carries a levy of R64; a pipe 20 mm in diameter, a levy of R115; a pipe 40 mm in diameter, a levy of R460, a pipe 80 mm in diameter, a levy of R1 840, and so forth. The size of the meter connections are based on municipal plumbing records and have been indicated on water bills since July 2018.

Owners of a business park in Bellville have been paying a fixed water charge of R2 875 per month for what they believed was a 100 mm connection, since July last year.

lans to have the Bishop Lavis town centre upgraded is currently being considered.

This is according to Mayco member for urban management Grant Twigg, who says the project forms part of the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP).

“The aim of the Bishop Lavis upgrade is to improve safety, cleanliness and the general maintenance of public spaces within the town centre.

“This will require the establishment of a control room in the town centre from which the day-to-day activities will be managed and monitored by the precinct management. The control room will be linked to CCTV cameras that are to be installed within the town centre and will be monitored on a continuous basis in order to ensure quick response

to any incidents within the area,” explains Twigg.

The top storey of the Bishop Lavis Civic Hall will be made ready to accommodate the establishment of the control room.

“Repairs to the building in the form of replacing the existing roof, rewiring and other minor improvements are to be undertaken in the current financial year. We anticipate that the contractors would be on site by the end of April next year.”

He says the cost of the project is yet to be determined. “We are still in the process of requesting quotations for the repairs to the civic hall and the establishment of the control room, as well as improved area lighting and installation of CCTV cameras.

“This will also be implemented in a phased manner with the roof repairs and installation of a control room being earmarked for completion in the current 2019/ 2020 financial year.”

Brendon Daniels (47), wat nou ’n inwoner van Eersterivier is, het die aandag van baie mense gekry ná sy rol as Farakhan in die Suid-Afrikaanse fliek Four Corners. Hy het ook in verskillende kyk-Net-reekse verskyn, soos Arendsvlei en Sara se Geheim.

Sy nuutste verskyning is in Deon Meyer se nuwe sewe-episode- TV-reeks, Trackers.

Daniels, ’n voormalige leerder van die Hoërskool Elsiesrivier, het erken dat sy pad nie baie maklik was nie. “Die keuses wat ons maak, sal ons rigting bepaal. Ek het dit geleer op ’n baie jong ouderdom. Die daaglikse uitdagings wat ons kinders en jong mense moet hanteer, is skokkend, maar dit hang alles af van ons keuses.

“Jy moet ’n keuse maak om ’n sukses van jou lewe te maak en jy moet glo dit is moontlik. Geen probleem is te groot om te oorkom nie. Ek het ’n besluit geneem om myself met die regte mense te omring, en dit was mense van wie ek kon leer,” sê Daniels.

ie bestuur van die Tygerberg-dienssentrum in Parow probeer altyd om interessante projekte vir seniors aan te bied om die lewe vir die seniors in hul herfsjare prettig en genotvol te maak.

Dit was weer die geval gedurende Seniors­week, wat van Maandag 30 September tot Vrydag 4 Oktober gevier is. Seniors van die noordelike stadsgebiede het die week saam met hul vriende gevier.

“Ons het die week baie interessant begin met ouma- en oupadag, waar grootouers hul

kleinkinders na die sentrum kon bring om heerlik te eet, speletjies te speel en nuwe maatjies te maak. Om die kinders op hul gemak te plaas, moes hulle ’n opgeblaasde ballon in die lug hou. Wat hulle nie geweet het nie, was dat daar ’n tweede, derde, vierde, vyfde en later ’n twaalfde ballon was wat hulle in die lug moes hou. Die doel van die oefening was om hulle te leer om saam te werk, want nie almal kon die ballonne vashou nie en ’n paar het op die grond geval,” sê Linda Louw, projekbestuurder by die dienssentrum.

“Die brandweer is ook genooi om die kinders te kom vermaak, maar moes die kuier afstel omdat die brandweer se dienste elders nodig was. Die kinders is gou met ’n verrassingspakkie getroos en hulle het behoorlik ingeduik,” sê Louw.

Op Dinsdag 1 Oktober is ’n spesiale bederfdag vir die seniors aangebied, wat deur die sanger Charl Kruger en sy vrou, Adelheid, en ander geborg is. Geskenkpakkies en ander lekkernye is aan die seniors uitgedeel en die Krugers het die seniors se hande masseer en na hul stories geluister. Hy het ook die seniors met sy liedjies vermaak en volgens Louw wil sy al die borge bedank wat Dinsdag onvergeetlik gemaak het.

“Op Woensdag 2 Oktober het die Vrouebediening van die Sewendedag Adventistekerk in Parow die seniors met ontbyt bederf.

“Die ontbyt het bestaan uit gebraaide wors, tamatieboontjies, Franse braaibrood, klein tamaties, koffie en tee. Dis altyd lekker om sommer net te ontspan en te sit en gesels sonder om jou te bekommer oor watter ontbyt om te maak,” sê sy.

Op Donderdag 3 Oktober het Elsiesrivier se tak van Meals on Wheels die seniors genooi vir hul markdag.

“Ons het nie getwyfel oor hierdie uitnodiging nie, want verlede jaar se markdag was ’n wenner.

“Daar was só ’n groot verskeidenheid om van te kies, dat ons nie kan wag vir die markdag van 2020 nie. Vrydag was ’n gewone dag vir die seniors by die sentrum en het ons by verskillende winkels gaan kollekteer en agterna ’n heerlike middagete teen ’n billike prys genuttig,” sê Louw.

“As van die lesers nog nie deel is van ons nie, word hulle genooi om by ons betrokke te raak. Jy kan saam met ons oefeninge kom doen, groente skil, goed vir ons insamel, maar die belangrikste is om uit jou huis te kom en nuwe vriende te kom maak,” sê sy.

Die konferensie staan onder leiding van past. Susan de Villiers van die Apostoliese Geloofsendingkerk en sy is dienend by die Eersteriviergemeente.

“Ek het vir ongeveer tien jaar die enkelouerbediening van die AGS in Eersterivier gelei en het toe besluit om vanweë die groot behoefte aan leiding, ondersteuning en kameraadskap ander vroue te bemagtig.

“Met die goedkeuring en seën van ons senior pastoor, Trevor Herbert, het ek drie jaar gelede die interkerklike Vrouebediening begin,” sê sy.

Die tema van hierdie konferensie, #Destruction Impossible, is juis gerig op die skrifgedeelte 2 Korinthiërs 4 verse 8 tot 12.

“Vroue gaan deur soveel trauma, byvoorbeeld mishandeling (fisiek, emosioneel, verbaal en soveel meer), asook finansiële druk en werkloosheid. Soms spook hulle ook met die uitdaging van kinders wat betrokke is by bendegeweld en dwelmmisbruik en dit alles word in stilte gedoen. Soms word die nood so groot dat hulle selfs hul eie lewe wil neem,” sê sy.

Jodi takes Open Mic Jazz crown The nail-biting final of the Open Mic Jazz singing competition at GrandWest took place on Wednesday 16 October. The six finalists had the audience on their feet supporting their favourites.

At the end of the night, the judges crowned Jodi Fredericks (23) from Parow as the winner. Leah Adams (27) from Heathfield came second and Caitlin Farmer (21) from Maitland third.

Jodi, who is studying music at the University of Cape Town (UCT), walked away with R40 000. Leah, a music teacher won R15 000 and Caitlin, also a music student at UCT, went home with R10 000.

“All the finalists put on a superb show, the talent was astounding,” says Elouise Matthys, promotions manager at GrandWest.

“With an audience of more than a 1 000 people, it certainly felt like a proper jazz show.

Matthys congratulated all the finalists and especially the winner, Jodi. “We’d also like to thank and congratulate the organisers for putting together this excellent competition.

“The whole competition was an incredible success. GrandWest is looking forward to hosting it again next year.”

Liefde by die dam, genoem na Valiant Swart se treffer met dieselfde naam, is ’n vertoonvenster vir plaaslike talent.

Dit word in samewerking met Bok Radio en Via (DStv-kanaal 147) aangebied.

Die program, met musiek vir jonk en oud, beloof ’n musiekbelewenis vir die hele gesin of ’n

lekker dag uit saam met vriende.

Die bekende Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars en groepe wat vanjaar die verhoog gaan laat vlamvat is Die Heuwels Fantasties, Francois van Coke, Early B, Arno Carstens, Majozi, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Snotkop en Loki Rothman.

Pierre Greeff van Die Heuwels Fantasties en een van die organiseerders, sê: “Ons help graag ander; bring jou kombers en los dit na die konsert agter. Liefde Wen sal seker maak dit kry die regte

Greeff sê Meerendal is die ideale venue vir die Kaapse konsert.

This re-imagining of the Kramer Petersen hit of the 90s: Poison, tells the story of a young, idealistic social worker, who stands up to the drug dealers on the Cape Flats. When she discovers that her friend is caught in an unhappy relationship with a drug lord, she tries to rescue her. Most of the original Taliep Petersen compositions have been retained, while Kramer has written a new libretto. The shows are weekdays at 19:30 and Saturdays at 14:00. Die fonds verleen geldelike hulp aan pasiënte.

Geld is beskikbaar gestel vir Myrtle om daagliks van haar huis tot by die hospitaal en terug te reis.

Die fonds het weekliks sowat R200 beskikbaar gestel, sê sy.

Gedurende haar besoeke het sy gesien hoe ander pasiënte geldelik sukkel.

“Ek het baie gehuil. Daar was mense wat nie eens vir hulself ’n snytjie brood kon koop nie. Dis mense wat ouer is as ek. Party mense is al van 05:00 daar,” sê sy.

Myrtle, wat ook reeds bestraling ondergaan het, sê sy is om hierdie rede dankbaar vir die lewenslyn wat sy aangebied is.

Sy is ook onlangs gevra om as ’n ambassadeur op te tree vir Pink Lady Apples.

“Ek is dankbaar. Toe hulle my nader om te help, het ek ingespring,” sê sy.

Die organisasie beplan ’n fondsinsamelingsprojek op Saterdag 26 Oktober by die

Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset-Wes, genaamd Pink Lady Crafts for Cancer, waar Myrtle ’n gas gaan wees.

“Vir daai menses sal ek enigiets doen. Ek weet hoe dit voel as jy die dokter in die oë moet kyk en sê sorry dokter, ek kan dit nie bekostig nie. Jy weet jy moet die behandeling kry, maar jy weet jy kan dit nie bekostig nie. Dit wat die organisasie gegee het, is die grootste geskenk wat enigiemand vir my kon gee in my stryd teen kanker.

“Ek het baie respek vir die Pink Lady Apple-organisasie en wat hulle doen. Ek sal hulle help, solank hulle net ander kan help wat saam met my in die situasie is,” sê Myrtle. Haar volgende besoek aan Tygerberg-hospitaal is op Maandag 25 November.

“Dan sal hulle ’n volledige ondersoek doen. Daar sal ek hoor of ek in remissie is, en of ek all right is. Op die oomblik drink ek nog my pille elke dag,” sê Myrtle.

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust last week unveiled the redesign of its logo, website and social media pages. At the launch was prof Pierre Goussard, Kirsten Samuels, Candice Jansen, Jason Falken and Jennifer Geib.

@richardjohn_rj The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust unveiled a brand new redesign of its logo, website and social media platforms last week at a launch event – all of which had been inspired by the children, staff and hospital itself.

The launch was held on the Tygerberg Campus on Thursday 17 October where brand ambassadors Vicky Sampson, best known for her 1995 hit “Afrikan Dream”, and Quanita Adams, a stage and screen actress, were in attendance.

Jennifer Geib, brand designer described as the mastermind behind the trust’s new logo, took the guests through the process of the new design step-by-step. “It is a logo, but more than that, there is a lot of thought that go into it,” she says.

The process for the design involved tapping into the minds and thoughts of key stakeholders, and diving deep into the trustees and finding out who they are, she says.

“We held workshops and worked out what the vision and mission is for the trust. We also looked at the challenges and the opportunities faced by the trust. A lot of this process involved looking at the audience of the brand – both internally such as the patients, doctors and trust, as well as externally such as the media and donors.

“We wanted to touch these audiences in different ways,” Geib explains.

The design team conducted consultative processes which included questionnaires and talks held with stakeholders.

Geib says the team also wanted to have the services which the hospital offer, recognised. “The service that the hospital offers is great and cutting edge,” she says.

She adds: “The brand needed to be representative and united, translated easily and most of all it needed to be something that establishes the trust and makes it more visible,” Geib concluded.

The trust’s new logo also took some inspiration from the artwork done by the young patients, and also the building blocks of children’s healthcare.

Kirsten Samuels, digital account director who heads up the online platforms, unveiled the brand new website’s homepage. “It is all nice to be on social media, but it is important that we are present on the right ones.”

The updated social media accounts include LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

“Since we started in September, I am proud to announce that we had an increased presence on social media.”

About the website, she says: “If you are not visible online, you will not survive.”

On the new web homepage, visitors to the site can view who the trust and the stakeholders are, the

events they host past and present and how one can volunteer and donate.

“I am very proud to be part of this great initiative,” Samuels says.

Jason Falken, trust chief executive officer (CEO), said in his speech that the trust has a long history that spans back to 2001 – a total of 18 years. He says trust and unity is very important among the trust’s members, donors and recipients.

Prof Pierre Goussard, a pulmonologist and trustee, opened the launch saying that it has been a long journey to get where they are today.

He says that they are all privileged for having the opportunity to relaunch the trust and its image. “A lot of people and stakeholders were involved.”

He says the machinery they use in theatres cost millions and that with this rebranding and new image, the trust can hopefully help acquire new equipment, and also help make the experience of the children and mothers and fathers more pleasurable.

yden Senger (Durbanville Golf Club) bounced back from the heartache of losing in a play-off at Clovelly last month to win his first Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series title of the season at Royal Cape Golf Club recently.

By shooting a 2-under 70 in challenging conditions at Royal Cape, 18-year-old Ayden qualified for the #BridgeJuniorSeries regional final, where he will compete for the ultimate prize – an allexpenses-paid trip to the North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst in the United States of America (USA) in July 2020.

Ayden was the only player in the field to match the testing way that Royal Cape had been set up for the tournament, with all of the pins seemingly placed at inaccessible spots on the greens. One junior golfer who had no problem finding at least one of the pins, was 15-year-old Paarl Boys High learner John Rabie who took home a R5 000 Bridge Fund Man-

A chip in for birdie on the tough 3rd gave Ayden the early lead. But a double drop on the following hole set him back. A birdie on the short 8th got him back to level, but he immediately gave the shot back on the 9th. However, consecutive birdies on 12 and 13 and on 15 and 16 saw Ayden pull away from the field and seal the victory.

“I haven’t played Royal Cape in a while and it was much tighter than I remember,” he said. “I hit my driver so straight today and that is probably why I won, because keeping your ball out of the trees off the tee was key.”

Ayden is determined to win the Bridge Junior Series regional final and follow in the footsteps of fellow Durbanville Golf Club member Tyran Snyders, who in July became the first South African to win the North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst.

“Every young South African

golfer dreams about playing in America, against the best in the world,” he said. “So, having a shot at playing Pinehurst was one of my goals for the year.”

The juniorseries.bridgefm.co.za launched in 2017, is managed by the SA Golf Development Board and endorsed by GolfRSA. Open to boys and girls in the u.13 and u.19 divisions, the Series is played across 18 tournaments hosted by leading courses countrywide. The 18 tournament winners contest 36-hole regional finals in April 2020 with the two winners jetting off to Pinehurst.

“We are delighted that Ayden managed to secure a spot in the regional finals by winning at Royal Cape,” said Paul Stewart, chief executive at Bridge Fund Managers. “He is a young man with a very calm head, which is a big advantage when facing the challenges golf inevitably throws your way.”
