BISHOP LAVIS: NO SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS HAVE BEEN APPOINTED

‘Reinstate our teachers’ TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

T

he provincial education department says they will not be reinstating two teachers who were dismissed from John Ramsay High School in Bishop Lavis for awarding fraudulent marks to Grade-11 learners. This follows after learners, parents, the School Governing Body and the Bishop Lavis Action Community (Blac) staged a picket on Wednesday 13 November as their dismissal was in relation to the promotion and progression policy. A frustrated parent, Yolanda Gelant, says in addition to the dismissal which took place in October, no substitute teachers had been appointed. “My son, who is in Grade 11, has not had a mathematics teacher for a few weeks now. This is so frustrating because he’s going to matric next year and the last few weeks of Grade 11 was supposed to be the foundation for his final year. “The fact that no one has been appointed is a clear indication that the department doesn’t care about our children because if they did, they would’ve made a plan long ago,” says Gelant. According to Abdul Karriem Matthews, Blac civic activism coordinator, the education system is skewed. “This policy dictates that a committee, as determined by the school, meritoriously look at border cases when a learner fails to obtain the required 30% pass rate. Although this is a discretionary process decided by the committee, two teachers were dismissed by the department. “Their positions have been vacant for the past two months. They were pivotal in the schools’ recent success in the Motsepe Football Tournament over the past two seasons in Pretoria and Bloemfontein respectively. One teacher taught mathematics to the senior grades,” says Matthews. He has warned that should the teachers not be reinstated, the organisation will call for continuous mass action. “Our working

John Ramsay High School learners picketed outside the Bishop Lavis school on Wednesday 13 November. class schools are underresourced with a learner to educator ratio of anything between 1:40 and 1:60. It is impossible for teach-

ers to provide individual attention to our learners. Add the social problems of gangsterism, no decent housing as well as dys-

functional families and it would come as no surprise that our children fail. V To page 2.
