SMASH-AND-GRABS: POLICE URGE CAUTION

lsies River police is urging all motorists who become victim to smash-and-grabs to open a case. In the Elsies River policing precinct, hot spots include the corner of 35th Street and Owen Road as well as Avonwood Drive in Leonsdale. Police spokesperson Col JC de Bruin has advised motorists says it often happens that due to shock, motorists chose to leave the area instead of going to the nearest police station: “Arrests have been made, but sometimes victims don’t open cases. “They just want their belongings such as

cellphones back. “There is no set time when smash-andgrabs happen, they happen sporadically.” He says police have also noticed that some incidents happen during midnight hours when people come from parties and use their cellphones while driving. “The bright light from the phone then attracts the suspects and people are caught off-guard,” says De Bruin. “Motorists need to be vigilant at all intersections. Refrain from placing valuables on their car seats. Report all suspicious behaviour,” he adds. The corners of Robert Sobukwe and 35th Avenue, Borchards Quarry and Heilbot in Bishop Lavis and also Jakes Gerwel Drive

at the Bluegum and Jakkalsvlei intersections in Bonteheuwel are also common hotspots, says Bishop Lavis police spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi. He asked motorists to be careful. “All valuables are to be placed safely in the boot. Refrain from using your cellphone while driving, and this includes passengers. “I encourage all motorists to report such incidents.” Goodwood police spokesperson WO Waynne Theunis has advised motorists to drive on after a smash-and-grab incident. According to the police, smash-and-grabs happen daily along Voortrekker Road, but few cases are reported. In most cases, cellphones are snatched

when drivers have their windows rolled down. In other cases, windows are smashed and handbags snatched from the front seat. Additional hot spots include the corner of Hugo and Voortrekker roads, as well as Jakes Gerwel and Voortrekker Road. “When in that situation it is not wise to chase after them, because these suspects operate in groups. “We’ve managed to arrest a number of suspects. The most common modus operandi is to smash a window and grab property from inside the vehicle.” Theunis says the suspects often stand at traffic lights. V What is your opinion on this article?
