BISHOP LAVIS PRIMARY: NEW TEACHER APPOINTED
Protest is fruitful TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
A
n additional teacher has been employed at Bishop Lavis Primary School after parents and learners took to the streets to protest overcrowding in classrooms. Classes were halted from Monday 2 March until Friday 6 March. Spokesperson of the school governing body (SGB) Monique Abrahams said learners and parents were fed up. “We were up in arms because we made the request for additional teachers in September last year, but haven’t received any feedback. There
are 691 learners who must be split between 17 teachers. The classrooms are in a state and we requested mobile classrooms as well, but we haven’t received any yet. “The learners are supposed to be busy with assessments, but if we never took a stand this issue wouldn’t have been addressed. The classes are too big. There are classes with up to 53 learners. Children can’t concentrate when classes are so huge, plus it’s too many learners for one teacher. In some cases there are learners who need more attention than others.” Grade 4 parent Kaylene Minords said she supported the protest. “More teachers are
definitely still needed at the school. If a teacher has 30 or less children in a class then it would be better for teaching. It’s unfair for one teacher to deal with more than 40 learners.” The provincial education department’s Bronagh Hammond said they’re aware of the application for additional posts. “We are aware of the request last year. The school received two more posts between the 2019 and 2020 educator establishments. Many schools request additional teaching posts, and we have to allocate where there is the greatest demand. They currently have a post to learner allocation of 1:40
“Disrupting teaching and learning time further adds nothing to this process and is only harmful to the learners,” she added. Bishop Lavis police monitored the protest on Friday 6 March. “The spokesperson for the SGB, Monique Abrahams indicated that the community had no other choice, but to follow the route of a peaceful protest. While on site, interacting with the principal and SGB, the message was received from the provincial education department that one teacher has been approved with immediate effect. We can confirm that the situation has now been normalised.”
