FESTIVE SEASON: ROBBERY INCREASE

Security upped at post office TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

F

ollowing a recent armed robbery at Bonteheuwel Post Office in Jakkasvlei Avenue, the SA Post Office says they will be upgrading security measures at all its branches. SA Post Office spokesperson Johan Kruger told TygerBurger they annually see an increase in robbery attempts before the festive season. “Adjustments in security measures are made in line with this.”

On Friday 29 November the branch had to be closed after three men entered and demanded money. “Customers were referred to the Bishop Lavis, Langa and Gatesville branches. No customers or employees were injured and no customer property was damaged or lost. Our employees received professional trauma counselling after the event,” said Kruger. Bishop Lavis police have launched a manhunt into finding the suspects. Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi previously explained what transpired on the day of the

incident. “Once inside the building, they found a woman busy completing documentation. One of the men greeted politely and spoke with the teller on the other side of the counter. The third man took out a firearm and ordered the teller to open the door to the safe. The suspects spoke calmly to the teller, instructing him not to press the panic button. They assured the teller that their business is simply to fetch the money behind the counter as well as in the safe. “The men then warned the teller that if they don’t receive cooperation, they will shoot the woman, who

was the only customer in the post office. The suspects entered the safe and took cash from the safe as well as from the cash register,” explained Swartbooi. He adds that following the robbery, the trio ordered the staff of the post office to get into the safe. “The men instructed the staff to give them five minutes to exit the post office. No shots were fired at the scene. At this stage, the suspects are unknown,” said Swartbooi. Anyone with information is requested to contact Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
