BONTEHEUWEL: FATHER AND SON (2) DIES
Gang violence rife TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
W
ithin a space of just five days, seven people were murdered as a result of suspected gang violence in Bonte-
heuwel. According to local councillor Angus McKenzie, these incidents occurred between Wednesday 3 June and Monday 8 June. “Two people, a father and son, were killed on Wednesday 3 June, three were gunned down on Sunday 7 June and another two were murdered on Monday 8 June. These deaths were as a result of drive-by shoo-
tings,” explained McKenzie. Residents contacted TygerBurger stating that they fear for their lives. It’s believed that a war is raging between the Hard Livings and Playboy gangs as they battle for supremacy. Last week Wednesday (3 June) Mogamat Johnson and his two-year-old son, Zhario, were shot in Bonteheuwel Avenue. The 31year-old man died on the scene and the toddler in hospital. According to provincial police spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa, Johnson was walking from a nearby shop on Bonteheuwel Avenue at 19:15, carrying the child when a
vehicle stopped next to them. “Two unidentified males climbed out and started shooting In a more recent incident, on Sunday 7 June, a 38-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded in Blackberry Street, and a 19-year-old man was shot and injured in Bramble Way. Provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said cases of murder and attempted murder were registered. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. A 40-year-old father, who requested anonymity, said he is concerned about the impact these shootings will have on the livelihoods of his three children. “I have two sons
and one daughter. My boys are growing up witnessing this kind of violence and it has become something which they, unfortunately, find normal. As a parent, I try to set the correct example, but I can’t control who my children get exposed to. I pray that the wars come to an end,” he said. A 58-year-old grandmother said her grandchildren can’t be children. “These gangsters are taking over our streets. We need to get our freedom back.” According to McKenzie, tensions are high at B Block. He says it is unacceptable that innocent people are being affected by this violence in the community.
