ROAD OF DEATH: GRANDMOTHER KILLED

Call for traffic calming TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

oncerns have been raised about motorists driving over the speed limit in Halt Road, Elsies River. This comes after a 64-year-old woman from Epping Forest was killed while crossing the road on Tuesday 2 February. This accident, which claimed the life of Yvonne Marais, caused a stir on the Elsies River – My Hometown Facebook page as several residents expressed their distress about motorists who drive above the 60km/h speed limit. Chair of the Inspire Network non-governmental organisation (NGO) Steve Ross has

described the area as “notorious” for accidents. “The stretch of road between Elsies River High and Owen Road is known for some terrible accidents through the years. Many people lost their lives and property was severely damaged due to speeding and reckless driving. The recent death on the road of a well respected grandmother once again highlighted the importance of having traffic calming measures placed on Halt Road,” said Ross. He said the section of road attracts high volumes of pedestrians as it passes by the schools, Elsies River Civic Centre, the local library, I-Can Centre, clinic and day hospital as well as numerous shops. “Some residents suggest that traffic lights

are installed at the intersections with 25th Avenue, 34th Avenue as well as at Landros Avenue. These intersections are very difficult to cross as oncoming traffic often travel in excess of the speed limit.” Dino Steward of Dino Towing Services suggested that circles be installed in Halt Road to alleviate speed limits. “A life is more important. This is an arterial road and having more stops could result in more smash and grab incidents.” Ward 28 councillor Chris Jordaan has urged motorists to adhere to the speed limit. “Halt Road was designed to have a side road in order for the community to have easy excess to the main road. However, some reckless drivers use the road to speed and have

absolutely no regard for the pedestrian crossing which is where the accident took place. Some irresponsible and reckless drivers find Halt Road to be a speed track. It’s not a death trap as described by the community, but rather ill disciplined road users.” Commenting on the accident, Nyanga police cluster spokesperson WO Joseph Swartbooi said the incident occurred around 14:35 on Tuesday 2 February. “Upon arrival at the scene, officers were met by the gruesome scene of a woman lying on the bonnet of a white VW Golf that was static in Halt Road. A 20-year-old man, who was the unlicensed driver of the vehicle, was very much traumatised after the incident.” A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
