) In all, 69 underage kids found
Shebeen raids for the youth CHILTON MELLEM
With June being a month to commemorate youth, law enforcement officers with the help of community volunteers did their bit to save youth from dangerous environments on Friday night. Neighbourhood watch members, Kleinvlei police, the victim support group, the Metro Police and an organisation called Eye on the Child joined forces to confront a number of shebeens in the area. Their task was to get underage youth out of these places as well as search for any weapons or illegal substances. They also sought to tackle shebeens who sold alcohol to minors between the age group of 13 to 18. “We want to see what youth are frequenting these kinds of places, what are the social problems, if their parents know where they are and if we need to involve a social worker,” said Supt Raquel Paulsen from the Metro Police. With a train of police vehicles and a Metro Police vehicle filled with volunteers, everyone was geared on taking their community back. Police and Metro Police officers entered the shebeens first bringing out anyone who looked suspicious or underage. As people exited shebeen outlets, volunteers were wait-
ing to take down their details. Shebeen patrons were also frisked by the police and volunteers alike. At one shebeen, an employee expressed their joy at the sight of the police raid. “Thank you for coming. These people come here with their friends, some of them belonging to the 28s. Once they are in, it is hard to get rid of them,” she said. As the police raid was carrying on, a young woman approached a police car with her sister. She had claimed to run away for her and her sister’s safety. She told officers that her boyfriend had threatened to rape her younger sister. Arrangements for a place of safety were immediately arranged. At the end of the night 69 youth were found at illegal and unlicensed outlets. These shebeens who have not complied with liquor regulations are now facing fines of up to R1 500 for none compliance. Sgt Carmen Marinus, head of social crime at Kleinvlei Police Station felt that the shebeen operation was a huge success. “The social crime office is busy with an intervention with the parents of these children who were found at the shebeens. These youth are our future generation and we have to make sure that they make the right choices,” Marinus said.
