Happy Valley homes ‘second rate buildings’ Residents of Happy Valley wait in front of the Mfuleni Police Station yesterday for the release of 12 people who were arrested for riotous behaviour. The three men and nine women were arrested at a building site in Happy Valley while protesting against the city’s choice of contractor to complete a housing project. According to Robert Rasmeni, general secretary of the Happy Valley Community Development Forum (HVCDF), the houses are of poor quality to say the least. According to Capt Nomathemba Muavha, spokesperson of Mfuleni police, the 12 suspects were to be released yesterday with a fine. Photo: Chilton Mellem
) Domestic worker never gives up
She graduates at last JANA BEKKER
Sheer determination paid off for Nosipho Sheila Mdini, a 42-yearold domestic worker from Boston, when she received her National Diploma in Human Resource Management last week. “Since I was little, I told myself I wanted to be a graduate,” says Sheila. This dream had to be put on hold when she fell pregnant in 1987, at the age of 17. As she had a child to bring up, Sheila could not complete matric, but the dream persisted. In 2004 Sheila completed a computer course and in the following year,
she registered as a part-time student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. This go-getter paid for her studies with her salary and when she received her diploma last week, her studies were paid in full. “It wasn’t easy,” Sheila says. “After I completed the second year, I wanted to quit, because it was too much for me.” Sheila had five subjects in her first year and four in the second year and with a full-time job, she merely didn’t have enough time to juggle everything. Sheila persisted, however. Mondays to Thursdays she went to class between 17:20 and 19:20 and still had
to find the time to study for tests and exams, but she managed it. Despite being busy between work and studies, Sheila made time for love too and in 2007 she married Mxolisi Dala. During exams though, she took time off to study. Her employer of the past 12 years, Carin Human, is very proud of Sheila. “She is a real inspiration,” she says. About her choice of career Sheila says: “I want to work in human resources. It is such a broad field and I like to talk. I am a people’s person,” she says. Sheila’s only daughter, Philiswa
(21) is repeating Grade 12 this year, to obtain a better result for university exemption. “My daughter says I am an encouragement,” says Sheila. While Sheila was studying towards her degree, Communication 1 was added as an additional subject to the diploma, which meant Sheila had to study an additional year, in which she completed that one last subject. Although she cannot wait to work in her field, Sheila’s set on doing it right. “I do want to work in human resources, but I will only leave my current job once I have found another position,” she says.

Motorists can now look forward to a quicker way of getting to their destination following a set of robots which have finally been put up in Kuils River. With no robots on the corners of the Stellenbosch Arterial and Saxdown Road, chaos erupted causing traffic back-ups and numerous accidents have also occurred. After regular pressure from residents travelling on the road, ward councillor Cynthia Claasen made plans to have the robots put up. The robots have been up and running since Sunday and she says they have already had positive responses since then. “There was a Stop Street at the Saxdown Road which prevented motorists from getting onto the Stellenbosch Arterial and this caused mayhem on the roads,” says Claasen. “I was inundated with emails from residents asking for something to be done urgently. I then went to the area to witness for myself what the problem was and I had first-hand experience what the people were complaining
about.” She says it took her hours to get onto the Stellenbosch Arterial Road and this pushed her even more to set plans in motion. She says motorists who came from Saxdown Road had to drive along the yellow line just to get onto the road, but once they were on there they would have to battle to get across to a lane. “I know now that it was a disaster and the motorists were battling to get to where they needed to be,” says Claasen. “I am just so happy that the problem has been solved. Other roads will also be looked at where robots are needed.” Shaun Van Schalkwyk, a motorist, says it is better driving now. “It was problematic at first, but now it is much better. It gives motorist a fair chance and we all get an equal chance on the road.” Natasha Hendricks also agrees that the road is better to travel on. “I use that road to get to work and since the robots have been put up, it has been so much easier.”

Groen ‘sticker’ sê ‘go home!’ Wee jou as jy ’n groen sticker op jou lêer het wanneer hulle jou in noodgevalle by ’n privaat hospitaal sitmaak.
Die antwoorde sal my seker bly ontwyk.
Ratepayers to talk housing
groen vlak. Nee wat, so by geel rond.

Cops discuss corruption CHILTON MELLEM
Mfuleni police staff were reminded about the prevalence of corruption among their ranks on Wednesday. The talk was conducted by Capt Nomathemba Muavha, spokesperson of Mfuleni Police Station. “Our vision and aim is to create a safe environment for everyone living in the community. We should investigate all crimes and the root and causes of crimes,” Muavha said. She continued to emphasise to the officers how important honesty and integrity was in their line of work. “Honesty is very important to us as community members won’t come to us if they do not trust us, so it’s important to be trustworthy,” she said. Latching on to the topic of the community, Muavha felt it important just to remind officers that community members should be treated with the utmost respect. Many times
disabled and homosexuals are discriminated against in society. She advised officials that they should be treated with the same level of respect. A good work ethic was also encouraged. An example of a ringing phone was made, where she said that a phone should be answered promptly. Many tip-offs are received by police telephonically. Muavha then returned to her message on corruption where she defined the act of corruption being the involvement of at least two people. Three key examples of corruption were touched on during the meeting: leaking valuable information, accepting bribes and abusing one’s power were all classified as acts of corruption. Officials were told that if anyone were to be found guilty of accepting gifts and not declaring them, caught abusing their power or giving classified information to criminals, they would be charged with corruption. After the talk, a question and answer session was held and the officials were given an opportunity to say their say on the topic of corruption.

City residents can now phone a new toll- free number to report any incidents regarding street children and street people. This number – 0800 872 201 – according to Cornelia Finch, district head of the City of Cape Town’s social development sector, was rolled out as part of the Give Responsibly campaign. This campaign, launched last month, aims to discourage members of the community from giving irresponsibly. “Handouts given directly to street people sustain a deeply damaging lifestyle on the

With our programmes we aim to get them off the streets, by a holistic approach,” she says. “If you really want to help, phone the tollfree numbers to find out how and where you can help. “You can also report street people to this call centre, from where action will be taken, either by means of a social worker or organisation,” she says. According to Finch the call centre will be manned by four dedicated staff members, and she advises the public to phone the call centre, instead of the police or ward councillor, in cases involving street people.

The initiative came about when two educators from the school, Zahida Sonday and Lizelle Rose heard about the profiling called Ident-A-Kid being done at Bastion Primary School in Brackenfell. The idea turned to action when 1 800 Palm Park learners completed their Ident-A-Kid packs. This included a DNA mouth swab which was done by nurses from the Eerste River Hospital and thumbprints which were done by the Kleinvlei police. “This is a broader awareness of child safety. We are also planning on having a traffic

officer coming to address learners about road safety in the future. As for the Ident-AKids, we hope that we never get to the position that we have to release fingerprints to the police, but if so, police will have fingerprints, DNA and a photo of the learner,” said Floris Meissenheimer, principal of Palm Park Primary School. Meissenheimer feels that as a community, everyone has a responsibility to care about the youth. The two Palm Park Primary educators both have a background in counselling. They also run a trauma room for learners who have been abused or need someone to talk to. The police and nurses were only more than happy to help out on the day. “We are glad to be part of this and assisting children in the area,” said Sgt Carmen Marinus, head of social crime at Kleinvlei Police Station.

First the manholes, now the brass padlocks are popular among thieves. This is due to the high monetary value of brass and copper. Dr Les Rencontre, director of electricity services of the City of Cape Town, said because of the theft of the padlocks, the city has received numerous complaints of open electricity kiosks. He responded to a complaint by a Durbanville resident, James Black, who found an open electrical kiosk outside his house on the corner of Paul Kruger and Hibiscus streets. Although the City locked the box after he complained, he said it is not the first time boxes have been left unlocked. “I want someone to sit up and do something to make sure nothing like this is repeated. Can you imagine what would happen if a child played there?” he asked. According to Rencontre the maintenance of electrical equipment in the city is done on a

Pageant with difference sporting the odd teddy. “Most girls aren’t comfortable to model in bikinis, so we changed that category to pyjama-wear,” said Holmes, The money raised at the pageant will be ploughed back into buying equipment such as needles and blood pressure machines. The organisation is sponsored by the department of health but also rely on their own funds. They also offer their services free of charge and help people with various chronic illnesses. They cover illnesses such as high blood pressure, sugar diabetes, HIV and unhealthy weight gain. If a patient has a problem that needs more expert attention they will refer them to the nearest clinic. If you are wondering how health care and modelling go together, then Reliable Action, a non-profit organisation (NPO) married the two concepts on Friday with their beauty pageant. The beauty competition which saw 11 local girls show their talent also served as a fundraiser as well as good fun. “We hope that people will enjoy it, and like the singing and dancing items that we have in our line-up as well. It’s important that people know about us so that we can help them,” said Samantha Holmes, one of the organisers and a member of Reliable Action. What gave this pageant a twist was that the swimwear category was replaced with pyjama wear. The girls, who ranged from 15 to 27 years of age, posed in their nighties, bed time slippers, gowns and were even caught

Those who help you Those who save lives for a living are appealing to the public to help them compete at the International World Rescue Challenge in London this year. Helping the Western Province rescue medic team compete on the world stage has never been easier, since all one really needs to do is to have a great time! This weekend (27 and 28 April), a big fundraising event will be held at the Northern Cricket Grounds in Goodwood. There will be market stalls, a potjiekos competition, quad bike rides, pony rides and a bikini car wash! Bands will also entertain the crowd and Derek Gordon will be doing a show on Friday. Fascinating car exhibits by Jags Club, Exotic Cars, Crankhandle Club, Vintage Cars and Street Rods will certainly be a feast for the eyes. On Friday one can even enter the six-a-side cricket playoff tournament at R30 per player and on Saturday raffle tickets will be sold for some stunning prizes up for grab. Since the event will stretch over two days, one can just pitch a tent and sleep over! Saturday night will culminate in a disco. Donations are welcome at the gate. Walk ‘good exercise’ CHILTON MELLEM
The Mfuleni police put their best foot forward on Wednesday when they held their walk-athon in the warm blaze of the sun. “This is a great way to de-stress as well as a great way to get exercise. Some of our detectives are so piled with file-work that they do not see sunlight during the day. So I am sure to have something like this is a good change of scenery,” said
Capt Nomathemba Muavha, spokesperson for Mfuleni police. The initiative was brought up in a meeting between Muavha and other officers to boost morale of officers. Admin clerks, constables, sergeants, warrant officers and captains made up 23 Mfuleni staff who joined in the fun. Clocking in at just over 45 minutes, Sgt Christine Meyer was the first to finish the three and a half kilometre walk. “It was a nice walk and I would
like to do it again, even on a weekly basis would be great. I didn’t expect to come first though, I just came to enjoy myself and walked for the fun of it,” Meyer said. This walk has inspired her to get back into walking and brush up on her fitness. As if winning was not enough she also received a surprise hamper for making it first. Most of the Mfuleni staff agree with Meyer that this should be done more often and that they enjoyed their brief exercise session thoroughly.
These lifesavers are counting on you! Here is Manfred Engelbrecht, Alfred Jafta, Fabian Hoffman and Andrew Holmes (back), and Darren Pick, Christopher Smit and Darrel Bowyer (front).

Marie Curie, a two times Nobel Prize winner, including one for her co-discovery with her husband Pierre of the radioactive element radium, also “attended” the function in the body of actress Bev Cooke-Tonnesen. Radium is used in cancer radiotherapy, as well as a neutron source for some research purposes. Apart from the scanner, which was made possible by Curie’s life work after all, “Curie” herself was the belle of the ball. She entertained guests with quirky accounts of her life back then when everything she touched became radioactive! Curie died of cancer in 1934 due to an overexposure to radium.
Theft a drain on resources
A centre equipped with a PET/CT scanner for the early detection of cancer, was officially opened last Thursday 19 April at Tygerberg Hospital in Parow.
“Missing drain covers are not only a danger to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, but more so to our children who play in the vicinity. “The replacement of the covers is an unnecessary expense to the City – the money could rather be used for new infrastructure or maintenance,” said the chairman for Subcouncil 3, James Vos, after numerous incidents of stolen drain covers were reported to the municipality. Ward 3 and ward 70 form part of Subcouncil 3. “We continue to call upon the community to please keep their eyes and ears open and help the city’s Copperheads to combat this activity by calling 0800 222 771 with any information. It would be especially appreciated if the information is as detailed as possible, for example, if it is a vehicle, provide the make, colour and even number plate of the vehicle,” says Vos. Vos explains that damage and theft of municipal property is a serious criminal offence. He went on to say that this degrades the environment, creates the perception that matters are out of control and, as a result, the values of homes and businesses deteriorate. “This has a major impact on the overall quality of life in our community.” Vos explains that he constantly lobbies the municipality to make main roads more aesthetically pleasing, with landscaped entrances and centre medians as well as street sweeping and litter picking, only to see drain covers stolen and essential street signs wantonly bent and broken, as well as the destruc-
The scanner worth more than R15 million, will now be available to patients of the Western Cape’s three academic hospitals. This is the first PET/CT scanner in the provincial state health sector. This initiative is a joint venture between the Western Cape Department of Health, who paid for the building of the centre, and NTP Radioisotopes, who donated the scanner. At the opening function, Western Cape Health Minister Theuns Botha, said: “The cost-saving implication of this technology is phenomenal, and also means that greater numbers of patients will be treated more appropriately, with improved outcomes for all. This is such a great example of the public and private sector working together for the wellbeing of the people of the Western ‘Marie Curie, Dr Dimitri Erasmus and Prof Annare Ellmann take a closer look Cape.” a the new PET/CT scanner. tion of litter bins coupled with dumping. “Drain covers and road signs are important for the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike, and damage to these signs creates an unsafe and potentially dangerous situation; needless to say, repair and replacement of these items are also extremely costly and counter-productive.” Residents are urged to report missing or damaged road signage, drain covers and litter bins – phone the call centre on 0860 10 30 54 all hours.
Missing drain covers pose a great danger to residents, pedestrians, motorists and especi ally children.

Help Little Fighters fight cancer REYANA STEYN
Fighting for children who have been diagnosed with cancer – this is why the Little Fighter Cancer Trust was formed. The trust, which gives relief to cancer babies and their families, has been selected as one of the beneficiaries for the ’Cause We Can!/ Want Ons Kan! charity concert featuring some of the top names in the SA music scene. TygerBurger is the media sponsor of the event. The amazing concert is set to take place on Sunday 29 July and will showcase artists such as Laurika Rauch, Andriëtte Norman, Alan Committie, Zanne Stapelberg, ADAM, Heinz Winckler, Koos Kombuis, Wicus van der Merwe, Lize Beekman, Brandon October, Emo Adams and Take Note, Pedro Kruger and Dowwe Dolla. “We are trying to raise money to help the families of the children
who have been diagnosed with cancer,” says Mandie Erasmus from the Little Fighter Cancer Trust. “Cancer is not a thing that happens to a person of a certain age. We need to create awareness in South Africa as more children are being diagnosed and these families need support.” She says some of the parents lose their jobs and businesses because of the medical bills and because they want to give their children the best medical care. “These people need petrol money, food, clothes and money for hospital and doctor bills and that is where we come in and try to assist.” The trust was started in 2010 by Tania Goslett and Thomas Engela in Paarl. They were offering support to families but then they realised that they needed to be a bigger trust to offer assistance to more families. In less than a year they were offering support to 40 families all over Cape Town and even Johannesburg.
Children from St Joseph’s Home for chronically ill children along with Thomas Engela, one of the founders and caregivers.
The trust shows support to any child diagnosed with cancer under 18, but if the child is over the age and still has cancer, the relationship will continue. Erasmus came on board after her mother, grandmother and grandfather died of cancer. “Cancer patients have always been close to my heart. I started reading the trust’s Facebook page and after Tania and Thomas asked me to get involved I started doing fundraisers.” From these fundraisers outreach programmes were started and the Bag of Hope project was born – the trust makes up food parcels for the families of the cancer children, they also refurbish the beds and drawers. Families also receive bags containing cereal, noodles, coffee, tea, sugar, shampoo, conditioner, toiletries and other things they may need. Children receive bags with clothes, shoes, stationery, toys, toiletries, juices, a blanket – all the essentials they may need. “For Mother’s Day we want to do something for the mothers too because they would sit at hospitals sometimes for years while their children are receiving cancer treatment and often they have to sell their belongings to pay for the treatment,” says Erasmus. “That’s where we come in: we distribute bags to the mothers with nice feminine goodies and flowers. We will also be cooking a nice lunch for them on the day.” Erasmus says the goodies are and will be delivered to various places who care for children who have been diagnosed with cancer. She says for the future they are looking at getting vehicles to help with the transporting of the goods. They are also looking at buying a house close to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. “We want the mothers to come to the house and have a place to un-

We also want to empower the mothers, many of them have given up their jobs to be able to be with their children and we need to assist them,” says Erasmus. “We want to have short courses, including computer literacy to empower these women.”
She says it is “heartwarming” to be one of the beneficiaries of the Cause We Can!/Want On Kan! concert. “We are very humbled to have been selected as a beneficiary. We will be able to better our service to the community. We are thankful for the opportunity,” she says.
In

Transport still big hurdle for disabled I am a 57-year-old paraplegic due to a car accident in 1984. I lost my motor vehicle claim in 1989 due to negligence at the Table View Police Station. The police lost the original accident report and the High Court only accepts the statement taken at the time of the accident. Those years things were very difficult for the disabled. Jobs were unheard of. I worked very hard and went through so many humiliations and insults trying to get a job. The grant those years was R189 per month and I was a single parent; my son was six years old at the time. I did different courses and offered my skills free to companies just to show that I am able. In 1989 I started at a company as an Autocad operator. Those years companies paid you whatever they wanted to. They told me that I was lucky so I should be grateful. The person that I replaced earned R600 per week, I was paid R120 for Autocad and accounts because I was disabled. That did not put me off, it just made me stronger and more determined to do better. I also got my driver’s licence in 1989. Those years no driving school had ever taken a disabled person on the road. These were only some of the challenges I had to overcome. The letter will be too long if I told you everything. At the moment I am working at Murray & Roberts Foreshore, Cape Town as a receptionist. My problem is public transport. I have been registered at Dial-A-Ride since 2009. Nontando at Dial-A-Ride has finally after writing so many letters to so many different people including the mayor’s office responded, by saying they will work something out. Apparently Dial-A-Ride has only 27 vehicles and 6 000 registered people. Nontando together with the mayor’s office responded 5
April 2012. They are busy negotiating to solve my problem. I take the MyCiTi bus from the airport to the Civic Centre. I need transport to the airport. The MyCiTi bus is very wheelchair friendly and the staff very accommodating, they will help push me to work. The pavements are not very accessible, no ramps. I live in Ravensmead and start work 07:30 till 16:30 Monday to Friday. At the moment I use the MyCiTi bus from the Cape Town airport to the Civic Centre in town. The bus is very wheelchair friendly and the monthly is R424, very accommodating. My problem is getting to and from the airport, people charge R50 per ride and some are very unreliable. I have to ask different people every day. My stomach is like a tumble drier, I have this constant fear, worry, that I will not get to work. It is important for me to be at work on time every day. The reason for this letter is, to make people aware of the transport problem disabled people have. The government encourages Persons with Disabilities to become independent and apply for jobs, but how can they apply for jobs when they have no way of getting to work? There are so many disabled people who would prefer to earn a salary than depend on a government grant. This is 2012 – surely by now South Africa should be better equipped to accommodate transport for the disabled? Public transport in general is a major problem in South Africa. It should not only be a Dial-A-Ride problem. We should be able to take public transport. I need to address this problem to people that will be able to act positively. Please assist!
Plan is to empower local NGOs Positive leadership is empowering community organisations. This is the feeling of local community worker Frank Julie who started the People First Foundation (PFF) two years ago to build the capacity of NGO leaders in the community. Last week they hosted their fifth Open Leadership Forum at the Leliebloem Childfren’s Home in Athlone with more than 70 participants benefiting from the activities. Julies pointed out that with the current recession in the country many organisations were struggling to raise funds to keep their projects going, but this was a forum for them to Frank Julie, ready to em become aware of power NGOs in the com innovative ideas munity. Photo: Gary van Dyk to keep running. “At this forum they were given the chance to ask questions from five development specialists on a variety of issues. “These included labour law and public employment services, local governance, leadership and management, media, fundraising, staff development, monitoring and evaluation, as well as other related issues. “Those who attended were impressed with the responses from the panel,” he said. Another important aspect of the forum was the opportunity for networking and Julie thanked the leaders for taking the time to attend the forum. He also alerted them to future planned events such as donor forums where leaders can meet and engage critically with donors on funding practices in a time of financial crisis and NGO legal compliance. PFF is also planning a series of workshops to train non-profit leaders to become more effective in their organisations. Interested leaders are free to visit the PFF website, www.peoplefirstfoundation.weebly.com or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Indulge in a chocolate pot Rich, smooth and totally decadent. Serve in very small portions, decorated with maraschino cherries. 1 x 90 g or 100 g slab good quality dark chocolate 30 g (30 ml / 2 tbsp) butter 125 ml (½ cup) cream (not whipped) Break the chocolate into blocks. Add butter and melt on MEDIUM (50% power) in microwave oven, stirring frequently. Add cream and mix well. Pour into a bowl or, for individual servings, into small cups, Martini glasses or shot glasses. Place in fridge to set (the mixture will set quickly). For a lighter, more mousse-like texture, whip the cream first before combining with the melted chocolate and butter. Serves four or more. Start off with no more than two tablespoons per person – it is very rich, but delicious! . Dalene is a food stylist and recipe developer. Contact her on 021 913 4457 or 082 562 9787. Start your tertiary preparations NOW It’s the end of April, but matrics must start making plans for their studies in 2013. While the April holidays are slowly fading, and this year’s Grade 12s are only just settling into their last year at school, an education expert warns that those who want to pursue studies next year must start investigating their options and submit applications to the tertiary institutions of their choice. “It is imperative that the lessons of the last three or four years are used to make this group’s experience less stressful than those of the thousands upon thousands of prospective students who had their dreams dashed in recent years,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, director of the Independent Institute of Education. In past years, many prospective
students left their registrations and applications until the last minute (or even later). Great distress resulted when masses of applications could not be considered because they were late, a candidate’s chosen course was already fully subscribed, or a school-leaver’s academic record disqualified him or her for a chosen path. “This year’s matrics must act immediately to ensure they have sufficient time to investigate their options and apply timeously. Taking action now can save a lot of heartache and complications, including unexpected financial blows, later,” says Coughlan. She says the following tips will empower students to make the best choices for their unique circumstances, without the pressure of looming deadlines forcing them in a direction they would not other-
wise have chosen: . Broaden your scope and check out campuses for yourself. “Guidance teachers at school can only offer advice on that with which they are familiar, which often limits their guidance to a small number of public universities. A smart student will explore options in the public and private sector, and will go to the campuses themselves rather than blindly trust advertisements,” says Coughlan. . Check the facts. “This is your future so fully explore registration and accreditation, entrance requirements, duration of qualification, price, campus size, equipment, staffing and success rates. Don’t be fooled by hollow promises – check the facts on which all promises are based and if there are no facts to back them up, walk away. Read the small print.”
. Keep your options open by having options. “You must apply to more than one institution and even across institution types (for instance public and private institutions, universities and colleges). It is also better to apply for more than one qualification. Once your results have been released, your foresight will mean that you will be in a position to make the best available choice.” . Meet the deadlines. “Several institutions have surprisingly early closing dates and it is important to get your application in on time. While many private institutions offer the advantage of having closing dates that don’t fall within your Grade 12 year, you should not leave applications to them too late either, as the demand on many high quality programmes is high.”

. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. “If degree study is what you want, then familiarise yourself with the different levels of achievement needed for the same degree at different institutions. Understand now what the alternative access routes to degree study are should you not qualify this year.” . But remember, life is not lived by degrees. Coughlan points out that it is a myth that all the best opportunities come to those with degrees. “A person with a respected, vocationally focused diploma can be more employable than someone holding a generic undergraduate degree. A degree is no longer the door opener it used to be. Employers are looking for a match between what they need and what you have studied.”

Mr T Man CD will blow you away GARY VAN DYK
Trumpeter Vernon Steer will be blowing up a storm at The G-Spot next week when he launches his debut CD. On Monday 30 April he will be giving the public a taste of what can be heard on the release when he appears with the Richard Caesar band at the venue in Epping. Caesar also produced the recording. Steer confesses that it has been a long, and hard journey in music for him, but the harmony has given him lots of joy. It all started when he listened to Louis Satchmo Armstrong as a fiveyear-old on his grandmother’s gramophone records. “It was just something about the tone of the trumpet that intrigued me and I was hooked,” he says. “I started learning and from about 11 started playing in Christmas choirs and other bands.” The family stayed in Claremont and was forcefully moved to Hanover Park due to the Group Areas Act where Steer spent most of his formative years. At 16 he was already performing in a band called Extraction from

Grassy Park, but loved playing all kinds of music. “I loved playing anything,” he says with a sparkle in his eye. “You would find me playing the ballroom scene with Ikey Gamba on a Friday, a pop scene on the Saturday and on a Sunday get involved with a heavy jazz jam in Athlone. But, I just had to be playing all the time.” In the early ’80s he recorded the hit song “Kalimba Party” with Tomorrow’s World in Johannesburg whilst also working and recording with Jonathan Butler before he broke into the international market. Thereafter he returned to Cape Town and joined the Prison Service Band which was disbanded in 1989 and the band members were transferred to various prisons as wardens, but Steer kept up with his music playing wherever he could. He played with Paul Simon on his SA tour in 1994 along with saxophonist Micheal Brecker, and exCapetonian multi-instrumentalist, Tony Cedras. Another exciting time was when he worked with Afro-jazz brass pioneers, Mike Mahkalamele and Stompie Manana in the Workforce Band at the popular ’80s jazz haunt, the Village Pub which later became The Villa Revue in Maitland. Another well-known venue he performed at was the Inn on The Plain, managed at the time by veteran crooner, Rudolph Paulse, in the
bands Together and Horizon which included the legendary Robbie Jansen. “This was an exciting time for me,” he says. “During this time it was almost like going to university to be working with someone like Robbie because you were always learning so much more about your craft. “I also loved performing with the Schilder family; the brothers Tony, Chris and Richard – each one had their own individual style and were always willing to share their knowledge with you.” Since then he has always been on the scene performing at a wide range of gigs, his most recent being with the group Touchdown at the GSpot in Epping. He feels that this is the right time for his debut release and is very glad that Richard Caesar is behind the project. “We virtually grew up together,” says Steer. “Apart from being a friend he is a phenomenal performer and people are going to be knocked out with his production of the album.” The album is called Mr T Man, and Caesar is embarking on a new side of his musical journey by assisting the many unsung heroes of local music to get their material recorded. Doors for the concert at the GSpot in Gunners Circle Epping open at 20:00 with tickets, R40, available at the door. CDs on sale for R100.

Calm and cool heads by the boys from Bishop Lavis ensured that the club remains unbeaten at Newlands Cricket Stadium when they won their second consecutive Western Province 1C AMA-20 final by 5 wickets against Milnerton last Sunday. Milnerton elected to bat first and scored 98/6 with Robbie van Harte the pick of the Milnerton batsmen with an unbeaten 47 runs. A 37-run fifth wicket partnership with John Maritz (27) helped them to a reasonable score after a batting collapse in the middle with both the Bedford brothers failing to contribute with the bat. Bishop Lavis, who lost their first wicket with the score on 2, also struggled to get their innings off to a good start and it was a 45-run partnership between the experienced Justin Miller (20) and Earl Abrahams (16) that stabilised the innings in the middle. But at the end it was a memorable innings by Simeon Fondling (21 not out) who steered the boys from Bishop Lavis to their second consecutive title at Newlands. Fondling was also rewarded with the Man of the Match award. Captain, Dale Rainers was full of praise for his charges and said the win was not only for the club but the Bishop Lavis community as a whole. “It is an honour to represent your club at Newlands and the occasion is so much sweeter when you are victorious,” he said. The Bishop Lavis CC will host their Presentation of Awards ceremony this Saturday (28 April), at the Bishop Lavis Civic Centre starting at 18:30. Tickets cost R30. Contact club chairman, Joseph Fondling, on 082 420 2996.
Simeon Fondling was chosen as Man of the Match with Bishop Lavis CC's victory at New lands.
