ubcouncil 22, which includes parts of Mfuleni and Eerste River, bowed down to the men and women who devoted their lives to the community.

The Civic Honour function, attended on Monday was an auspicious occasion attended by community leaders, workers and the public.

“This is about people who live in and are for the community,” said Subcouncil 22 chairperson, John Heuvel.

What was a difficult process, was endured by the various ward councillors who appointed the nominees.

Nominees Amongst those honoured, was the late Bobby Hendricks of Eerste River, a housing activist who was given recognition for his good deeds and endless fighting for the provision of housing.

“The nomination process was difficult and we came in very tongue tied. It does make you become emotional having heard all the nominees,” ward 16 councillor Gordon Thomas.

“I don’t think that there is a lawyer or parliamentary member who has not fought

against Bobby.”

Hendricks was a vital asset to the community of Eerste River, which today has since seen the development of many houses for its people. His daughter, Carlin Samaai, recalled fond memories of her father who prevented many families being evicted.

Missed “My father has helped many people, mostly women, especially the elderly and illiterate,” she says.

“He is sorely missed not just by his family but by the community who still come to the house asking if there is anyone that can help them,” she said.

Sylvia Hendricks received the award on behalf of her late husband.

“He had a very soft heart. No matter what time of the day it was, he always helped and refused to see families torn apart.”

Among the recipients was Reverend Enoch Sula, a pioneer who helped established numerous settlements in Mfuleni.

“These are the pioneers who have sacrificed to hold the community together,” said Gordon.

olden Arrow Bus Services’ application against MEC for Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, and two companies operating existing interim MyCiTi services was recently dismissed with costs in the High Court.

The City of Cape Town roundly welcomed the judgement in the case, since it threatened to halt the further expansion of MyCiTi services.

“This is wonderful news for the people of Cape Town. It means that current negotiations for long-term contracts to operate existing MyCiTi routes, as well as those in the rest of Phase 1A and Phase 1B, can continue and those contracts can be concluded.

Importantly, this ruling allows us to implement our vision of affordable and integrated public transport for all the residents of Cape Town,” said mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Brett Herron.

Golden Arrow Bus Services, which is also an operator of existing MyCiTi services in Phase 1A, applied to the court to compel the city to enter into a mediation and arbitration process around areas of dispute, and to prevent the city from going ahead and negotiating and concluding a 12-year contract in terms of the National Land Transport Act (NLTA) to operate MyCiTi routes in Phase 1A and Phase 1B. The judge said that the process of establishing an Integrated Public Transport Network was “extremely complex”. He found that compulsory arbitration and mediation where parties could not reach agreement was “inappropriate”.

“If the city were obliged to reach consensus on every issue and with every participant in the process, failing which it could be compelled to go to mediation and arbitration, it could become endlessly bogged down,” the judge said when handing down his judgement.

Being compelled to a process of mediation and arbitration would make it impossible for the city to fulfil its statutory mandate, as required by the NLTA, to take steps “as soon as possible” to integrate services into the larger public transport system.

The judgement said that the relevant section of the NLTA meant a contracting authority, such as the city, was obliged to negotiate but was not obliged to agree.

Golden Arrow’s application to compel the city to negotiate in good faith was also dismissed.

The judge said that the allegation that the city did not negotiate in good faith was a strong allegation, which implied fraud or dishonesty.

He found that the city was not obliged by section 41 of the NLTA to negotiate with Golden Arrow Bus Services about compensation for its vehicles and assets which would be made redundant by Phase 1A and B. The City has not refused these negotiations at all, but the parties have negotiated to deadlock on these issues. The fact that the city and Golden Arrow hold different views cannot justify an inference of bad faith or unreasonableness on the part of the city.

“We welcome this judgement. It is good for Cape Town,” concluded Herron.

“It feels great to receive the award. It shows that there is somebody who has left a legacy behind and that there are those who want to follow,” said Sula.

Police step up rail safety drive after teenager dies The Kleinvlei police are creating awareness about railway safety and regulations.

They are urging the community to abide by railway safety rules and regulations, especially when crossing the railway tracks.

Pedestrians and commuters are to only cross tracks using designated crossings.

Earlier this year an 18-year-old boy lost his life while walking with earphones, unaware he was to be rammed by a train.

Officer Annacletta Mothoalo, spokesperson for Kleinvlei police, said when it comes to such tragedies: “It is difficult to determine whether or not it is a suicide attempt or negligence when crossing the railway.”

She also raises concerns that insurance companies are also become stricter when such incidents are listed on claims.

“People are not supposed to be walking

over the railway crossings in the first place.

We urge them to be vigilant and not travel alone,” she said.

She also urges commuters to make proper use of trains, thereby preventing further risk of injury.

Metrorail, through safety campaigns, has issued various commuter safety tips which should be heeded at all times.

Metrorail encourages the public to make use of bridges and subways instead of crossing railway lines, to remain in the carriage until the train comes to a complete halt, always keep train doors closed and do not stand beyond the yellow line on the platform.

Also to avoid taking an overcrowded train, wait for the next one and to not engage in train surfing.

Cops issue burglary alert to residents A recent rise in house break-ins have taken place in Malibu Village, Eerste River.

Kleinvlei police communications officer, Annacletta Mothoalo says that the break-ins tend to occur in the early hours of the morning at around 06:00.

The police, however are doing their best at attempting to capture suspects with the assistance of the community providing valuable information.

“Neighbours must work hand in hand with one another as the crime rate is high and only increasing,” she said.

Residents are urged to to ensure that their homes are properly secured and to join community safety structures.

“People must come together and work together by taking initiatives to start their own neighbourhood watch,” says Warrant Officer Mothoalo.

The Mfuleni police on Friday, 19 April, received information of a firearm in one of the Somali spaza shops in the Burundi squatter camp in Mfuleni.

The police who searched the shop, found a .38 special with ammunition.

It is believed that when the firearm went for testing, it was confirmed linked to a case in Venda of April 2009.

A 32-year-old Somali male was arrested and charged for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

On 22 April at approximately 02:50, a taxi driver, waiting for staff at Mfuleni taxi rank became a victim of hijacking.

This ensued after two men got into the taxi and drove off with him still present in the vehicle.

It was said that the taxi came to a stop,

after which the driver jumped off and ran to the police station.

The whereabouts of the vehicle were circulated to the rest of the police.

It was eventually spotted by the police K9-dog unit and Mfuleni police an hour later.

Two male suspects aged 18 and 23 years old were arrested on charges of hijacking.

They have since appeared in court on 30 April.

The Mfuleni police would also like to warn the community, that they will not hesitate to arrest people should people come to the police station to falsely obtain their property which has been seized for investigation.

Police warn about car safety after rise in theft The Kleinvlei police are warning the community to ensure that their vehicles are properly secured, especially when visiting the Shoprite and Pick n Pay parking area.

A serious problem regarding theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles has been taking place in the area.

The police claim that owners tend to be negligent which is the main cause of the incidents.

“We discovered that the owners leave their valuable properties in open spaces where someone outside can see inside the vehicle,” said Kleinvlei police station commander, Colonel Joan Stroebel.

She is appealing to the public to make sure that their vehicles are installed with tracking devices. However, if they cannot afford this they need to make sure that they do not go shopping alone.

Winter warmth at the right time

GARY VAN DYK It’s all about compassion as The South African National Zakáh Fund (SANZAF) launched it winter warmth project in Uitsig last week.

The organisation’s signature seasonal project, Operation Winter Warmth launched nationally at all its offices in South Africa, but the excitement was running high at Uitsig Primary who will benefit from it.

A large majority of children and the aged live in wretched poverty in South Africa, hence, their campaign is targeted at underprivileged children, the aged and the homeless in need across the country.

In the Western Cape, the focus is specifically on deserving school children in the various communities. “Our objective is to provide these deserving school children with a woolly beanie, scarf and gloves to protect them from the cold,” says Moulanah Moegamat Hassiem, Western Cape chairperson of the organisation.

“The aged in our community are also particularly vulnerable to the cold weather.

Chances are we all know an aged person who fits the above description. Thousands of our aged in countless informal settlements and in old age institutions will be afflicted by the severe cold winter weather.

They have little or nothing to keep them warm.”

In Gauteng, the focus will be on the aged and destitute families who will be provided with a range of winter clothing items so that they could select the relevant items that they need, adopting the Islamic principle of equality, equity and dignity.

Beneficiaries will identify what they need from a variety of items.

Similarly offices in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape will provide blankets, comforters, and winter jackets to communities in need.

“Collaboration with like-minded people

These youngsters get in line for their beanies and gloves to keep them warm this winter. and our contributors enables us to expand our reach and fulfil our mission, providing quality new winter items for children and communities in need,” added Sajid Dawray, national chairperson of SANZAF. “We work with individuals, corporate donors, community and faith-based service organisations looking to give back through cause marketing programmes. We also work with manufacturers and transportation partners who provide in-kind support that help us work so efficiently.

Tests at family health day The Oostenberg Rotary Club, in Wesbank, is working hand in hand with the Department of Health and other Rotary Clubs in South Africa, facilitating Rotary Family Health Days at a number of sites.

The Department of Health will administer core services providing support in the form of auxiliary services, crowd control and data capturing.

Prior to the event, promotional activities will take place.

It will take place in at Disneyland Educare, 150 Main Road, Wesbank.

Specialist volunteers are needed, who could provide added services such as eye tests or dental and hearing.

The core services to be provided include HIV testing and counselling, TB testing, diabetes/blood pressure screening, polio and measles vaccinations, deworming and Vitamin A tablet administration.

Further services will be provided, depending on resource availability.

Hours are from 09:00 to 16:00 on 9 May and 10 May. The assistance of various NGOs who might be willing to assist, especially with running the site on Thursday and Friday, would be welcomed.

Drill cadets get down and boogie The Bishop Lavis Drill Cadets will be giving you more than their marching styles this Saturday.

You will be able to check out the boogie and beat when they host a fundraising musical concert in the hall of Bishop Lavis Secondary School from 16:00.

The main reason for the show is to show the parents and mostly the community that apart from just drilling and going through

their training programme that these children can have lots of fun as well.

The Theatre Arts Admin Collective invites applications for the 2013 Theatre Arts Admin Collective’s Emerging Theatre Director’s Bursary.

This year, two bursaries are on offer, supported in partnership with the Baxter Theatre Centre and Distell.

The Bursary offers an emerging theatre director a mentor, a small budget, a month’s rehearsal space and a week of performance at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective. It is recommended that directors work with already existing scripts as the month-long peri-

od has proved insufficient for devised work.

The Bursary is specifically designed for emerging theatre directors who have had at least some experience in directing and whose passion is to have a career as a theatre director.

Al ooit gewonder hoe Jan van Riebeeck, Simon van der Stel en ander koloniale voorsate se handtekeninge lyk? Die regte egtes – op die papier waar dié mense self geteken het?

Dan is Nasionale Argiefweek van 6 tot10 Mei net vir jou.

Die meeste mense weet nie wat argiewe is of wat daar bewaar word nie, sê dr. Gustav Hendrich, senior argivaris by die Weskaap se argief- en rekorddiens in Roelandstraat, Kaapstad.

“Argiewe en argiefbewaarplekke se waarde word dikwels deur die staat én die publiek onderskat. Aangesien dit ’n plek is waar geskiedkundige dokumente bewaar word, bly dit steeds ’n instelling van onskatbare waarde.”

Hy reken dat daar in die argiewe antwoorde lê oor die verlede, wat ’n sleutel is tot beter begrip van ons voorsate en die verhaal van ons land. “Nalatigheid om die verlede te erken kan daartoe lei dat ons die gevaar loop om die foute – soms tragiese foute – van die verlede te herhaal,” sê Hendrich.

Hy sê die hoofdoel van die argief is om waardevolle rekords vir huidige navorsers en die toekomstige geslagte te bewaar.

Met die herdenking van Nasionale Argiefweek van 6 tot 10 Mei by die argief van die Wes-Kaap, val die kollig op die waarde

van argiewe en hierdie betrokke argiefbewaarplek. Dié gebou huisves van die oudste oorspronklike dokumente wat vanaf 1651 dateer – reeds vóór die stigting van ’n verversingstasie in 1652 deur Jan van Riebeeck. Die belangrikste argiefversamelings is die rekords van die Hollandse Verenigde Oos-Indiese Kompanjie (VOC), die Bataafse Republiek, die Britse koloniale tydperk na 1806, die voormalige Kaapprovinsie, sowel as die hedendaagse Wes-Kaapse regering.

“Dié argiewe is onvervangbaar, omdat dit die enigste oorspronklike kopieë is wat beskikbaar is. Van die versamelings, waaronder die VOC-rekords, is selfs tot Unesco-erfenisstukke verklaar. Buiten die geskrewe dokumente bevat die argief ook ’n kaarteversameling en pragtige fotografiese versamelings, wat deur die publiek geraadpleeg kan word,” verduidelik hy.

Met Nasionale Argiefweek word gepoog om die publiek bewus te maak van die waarde van argiewe.

Sandra moes lae ‘wegkrap’ vir dié rol MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN Die rol van Rita sou haar weer “glamorous” laat lyk, het die vervaardiger en regisseur van die toneelstuk Die Leo’s vir Sandra Prinsloo belowe.

Sy lag net lekker, al is “glamour” die laaste ding wat ’n mens dink ’n veteraan soos Sandra kort.

In haar laat sestigs wil dit voorkom of sy nou besiger is as ooit, beter is as ooit. Sy het pas ’n Fiësta vir haar rol as ’n tienjarige seuntjie in Oskar en die pienk tannie gekry – slegs een van ’n rits toekennings in haar loopbaan.

By die KKNK het sy in drie briljante stukke opgetree – een daarvan die storie oor die disfunksionele Leo-gesin. Die Leo’s is van 9 tot 17 Mei in die Bellville-burgersentrum op die planke.

Sy vertel die regisseur, Hennie van Greunen, saam met wie sy aan Die Naaimasjien en Janneman gewerk het, het haar oor Die Leo’s genader.

Toe het ’n groep akteurs by Artscape bymekaar gekom en saam “gelees” aan die stuk.

“Ons het verskriklik gelag – ons het gelag dat ons van ons stoele afval!” vertel sy.

Só met die lesery het die akteurs vir die rolle duidelik geword: sy sou die heks van ’n ma, Rita Leo, speel en Tobie Cronje sou pa Ben wees, wat onvergenoeg en bitter op sy sterfbed lê.

Hiervandaan was daar bitter min tyd oor voor Die Leo’s op die KKNK sou open.

“Ons het basies drie weke en drie dae gerepeteer. Dis baie min tyd vir so ’n groot en lang stuk. Dis boonop ’n komplekse stuk.”

Sy vertel die rol van Rita was vir haar baie moeilik en dat sy in ’n stadium gedink het sy kan dit nie speel nie.

“Rita het getrou met ’n man vir wie sy nie lief was nie. Sy het haar toe in ’n ‘bubble’ afgesluit. Sy praat baie en raak die verskriklikste goed kwyt sonder om dit eintlik te bedoel. Sy lewe vir so lank al iemand anders, sy weet self nie meer wie sy is nie.”

Dis juis dit waarmee Sandra gesukkel het.

“Ek moes ’n realiteit binne hierdie absurditeit skep. Ek moet verstaan wie die mens is wat ek speel anders kan ek dit nie speel nie.

So, ek moes baie lae wegkrap, maar uiteindelik was ek mal oor Rita. Ná haar man se dood, het sy haar lewe in haar eie hande geneem en ’n ommekeer gemaak.”

Sy vertel dat ’n hoogtepunt van die hele Leo-ervaring die “onafskeidbare” span is.

“Ek ‘love’ om te sing”, sê die blondine met die borrelende persoonlikheid. As sy kon, sê sy, sou sy die res van haar lewe gratis sing, maar ’n meisie moet darem eet, veral as jy net ’n paar maande gelede besluit het om jou musiekloopbaan voltyds aan te pak.

Heidi het in die Afrikaanse Idols van kykNET deelgeneem – ’n gebeurtenis wat een van die hoogtepunte van haar loopbaan was.

Sy sê dit was gedurende dié kompetisie dat sy besef het ’n musiekloopbaan kan meer as net ’n droom vir haar wees.

Nie dat sang voor die kompetisie ’n onbekende terrein vir haar was nie. Heidi het klassieke sang beoefen en het ook lesse gekry by die bekende Riana van Wyk, saook by ander sangskole.

Heidi het grootgeword met musiek soos dié van Cliff Richards in haar ore, of klassieke musiek. Sy hou van musiek wat tydloos is.

“Ek sing meestal vir ’n ouer geslag,” sê Heidi. “Dis lekker saamsingliedjies,” verduidelik sy.

“Ons is ’n heerlike span. Ons het so lekker saam gelag – ons eintlik doodgelag! En toe ek op ’n kol gedink het ek kan dit net nie doen nie, was almal so ondersteunend.”

Sy onthou die openingsaand by die KKNK toe hulle nie seker was of die stuk ’n sukses sou wees nie.

“Die stuk is baie snaaks, maar dis galgehumor en ek het gewonder of Afrikaanse men-

se daarvan sou hou.

“Maar die gehoor was saam met ons van die begin af. Dit was wonderlik. En die laaste vertoning was ’n absolute hoogtepunt. ’n Mens het daar op ’n ‘high’ uitgeloop,” onthou sy.

Sandra sê hoewel sy al voorheen komedie gedoen het, is ernstiger werk vir haar makliker.

“Ek is altyd so half verbaas as mense dink ek’s snaaks!”

En wat wil die fenomenale, legendariese Sandra Prinsloo nog in haar akteursloopbaan doen? “O, báie!” Sy lag weer lekker.

“Ek kan werklik sê dat ek mal is oor wat ek doen. En nou is ek soveel vryer en ek het nie meer soveel kwessies met myself soos toe ek jonger was nie. Ek probeer om oop te wees vir enigiets. Wie sou nou ooit kon dink ek sal ’n seuntjie speel op my ouderdom! Partykeer moet ’n mens maar net spring.”

Sy is baie bly dat Die Leo’s in die Bellvilleburgersentrum se teater aangebied gaan word.

“Ek is absoluut ’n voorstander daarvan om weer lewe te blaas in die ouer teaters.

Mense moet weet hulle kan ook gehalte-produksies in die plaaslike teaters sien.”

Aan die een kant het die voorstanders beweer misdaad is wel laer in lande waar die doodstraf geld. Hulle argumenteer dat dié misdadigers moet besef hul grudade het gevolge. Van hierdie mense is self direk geraak deur “halsmisdade”, soos moord en verkragting.

Die ander kant het gesê doodstraf is onmenslik, dat ’n mens nie ’n lewe met ’n lewe kan vergeld nie. Die meeste van hulle het ook aangevoer die doodstraf is oneties, on-Bybels en on-Christelik.

Dit laat ’n mense wonder of misdaad nie aan die einde van die ketting gekeer moet word nie, maar aan die begin. Daar waar ’n gesin kinders moet koester, ’n skool verder moet opvoed, maar ook waar ’n samelewing moet ondersteun en liefhê.

Geweld is vandag heeltemal aanvaarbaar. In elke liewe fliek of TV-produksie is daar geweld, al is dit net ’n vuisslanery. Luister na musiek, kyk na rekenaarspeletjies, lees boeke, sien net hoe “harder” en gewelddadiger sport geword het. Hoe meer goed – en mense – opgeblaas en weggeskiet word, hoe meer bloed spuit en borrel, hoe beter. Dis vermaaklik. Geweld is cool. En ons steun dit, reg oor die wêreld waar oorloë woed, kinders kinders skiet, onskuldiges sneuwel aan die hand van “sagte mense”.

Sus ons ons gewete met die idee dat ons dit immers nie in die regte lewe uitleef nie? Dit lyk tog of verskeie ander dalk nie dieselfde dissipline het nie.

The only way to stop drug abuse in SA Who is chairing this meeting anyway?

The sale of drugs is a call for concern, particularly in the Western Cape and South Africa.

This in part, has generated many questions and quick responses have been that those involved want to make quick money, as a result of a huge profit margin.

Drugs commonly sold in South Africa are cocaine, heroin, Ecstasy, marijuana and Quaaludes. Why is it so easy to get a dose of these drugs with relative ease, in spite of adequate security measures the government has put into place.

Are these drugs from within or imported? Who is to be blamed, the government? Are the ports of entry this country so vulnerable? The law is flexible to those who are engaged in this line of trade. The execution of a South African lady who was caught with drugs in China was not enough warning to them and meant nothing to the authority.

The 24-year-old mom-to-be from Kuils River who opted to put her unborn baby up for adoption on the internet site Gumtree has had different reactions from the public.

Tamsyn Coerecius polled TygerBurger readers on what their thoughts are about this story.

Janay Booys: I am an adolescent myself and I can never imagine advertising my child on the internet. She could’ve waited and given the baby to someone who is able to adopt the child in a legal manner. I think she does not even know how the procedure works.

Sandiswa Kani: I can’t imagine what that girl was even thinking when she did this. She is selling her child like it’s furniture or a car, the normal ads you always see on Gumtree. It’s a shock to me really.

Pedro Garcia: I cannot believe a mother would give up her child like that.

She has no feelings towards that unborn baby. What was she thinking. I was shocked when I heard about the article for the first time.

Pierre Roxburgh: I’m shocked, but feel that maybe she was forced to do it by someone. I know she’s young, but she should’ve followed legal procedures.

Bryan Strauss: I’m in shock. If she even thought about doing such a thing then she is not even worth being a mother.

Elke dag ry sy op haar “klein karretjie” in die klas rond en het altyd iemand aan haar sy om haar te help. Teen 10:00 gaan sy huis toe om suurstof te kry.

“Ek hou baie van skool, maar mis so baie dinge oor my siekte. ’n Mens kan nie regtig sê ek het ’n normale dag nie.”

At the age of 45, Graham Ashley Turner is making a comeback to the MMA ring and this is a man with his sights set firmly on an EFC title.

It’s been 10 long years since his last fight.

After the defence force as a youngster, Graham started working as a doorman as well as VIP close-protection security.

Through this he was able to learn many forms of martial arts, but still found something was missing. That something was soon found after he watched UFC 1 and saw Royce Gracie submit his opponents that were much bigger than him without sustaining injury to himself. This was Graham’s first introduction to the art of Brazilian JiuJitsu.

Graham Turner will make his comeback after a lengthy lay­off in the MMA ring. Here he is sparring with one of his top students, Shaun de Lange.

MMA dojo In the 90s, Graham started his first school training in the art of street reality combat in London. He trained up fighters that competed for pro-tournaments on the British circuit reaching national level.

After that he moved back to South Africa and followed his dream of opening his own professional MMA dojo den.

“At the age of 45, I’m physically and mentally in the shape of my life. I have never felt this good. I see myself as a martial artist not a fighter. A fighter will stop training when he stops competing. A true martial artists never stops training even if he knows he’s done competing,” said Graham.

He has a busy schedule to say the least.

He is training 16 times a week, with anything between two and four classes daily at his Leviathans Den dojo in Durbanville.

“A lot of thought has gone into this massive decision. I’m not done yet, far from it.

I really feel my best is still ahead of me. I think it would be arrogant of me to step into the EFC ring for my first fight. I need to get the ring rust off.

Burning desire “That’s why I decided to compete in a proam fight on 25 May in Edgemead. I need the time in the ring before getting competing in the EFC in November. I have a burning desire to compete on the highest level and let me tell you I am ready for it.”

He also has a lot of respect for Kyokushinkan’s Shihan Hennie Bosman. “Shihan Hennie opened his doors for me and some of my students two years ago. He brought me back from being a prized fighter to the roots of a true martial artists.

“Training at Shihan Hennie is all about respect for each other and yourself. The traditional ethics is something very important to us. Although we are involved in different styles, I still see him as my teacher.”

“You know I have always had respect for Graham. His technique and power surprised me and let me tell you it takes a lot of guts to get back into the ring at his age.

I have no doubt he will make a success of his comeback,” said Shihan Hennie.
