“Dit gaan oor my veiligheid, my gesin se veiligheid, die gemeenskap se veiligheid.

Kleinvleipolisiehoof antwoord klagtes:

Hier is (van links) Richard Esterhuizen, Mauret ta Dolman, Iris Dubee, Neil Theys, Jerome Fitz, André Bantom, Julian Unthank, Wilma Brady en Dawid Ruiters. Agter is Christi Booysen.

“Dié stasie word nou gebruik as ’n ‘by the way’, sodat almal hier brigadier kan raak,” het hy gesê.

Verdere duidelikheid oor dié aangeleentheid kan met my of my groepsbevelvoerder, brig. Vincent Beaton, bespreek word.

Epileptic man from Hillview missing, family frantic

Police confiscate dagga cache in Kalkfontein Dagga has landed a 30-year-old Kalkfontein man in some serious trouble. Kuils River police found quantities of the substance in his wendy house in Vrygrond with a street value of R20 000, Capt Isaac van Niekerk of the police station said. This highly successful raid was executed by members in the past week during various crime prevention operations The star officer in this bust, W/O Gerald Swart, responded to a tip-off from the community. He and his team then confiscated the narcotics and arrested the man for dealing in dagga. “The use of drugs is problematic to the police of Kuils River, and therefore the management of Kuils River SAPS welcomes the information given by the community that led to the success of the arrest,” Van Niekerk said. “Young children experiment with drugs at an early age and therefore it is important for the police of Kuils Rivier to police drug trafficking effectively.” V The public is encouraged to anonymously supply information to prevent crime on the police’s toll free number, 10111.

A man from Hillview in Eerste River has been missing since about 04:30 on Saturday, his family says. The man, Riaan Jansen (39) was wearing a black jacket, khaki pants and was barefoot at the time. His sister Jacqueline Isaacs says he is mentally disabled and an epileptic, but they have no idea in which direction he may have gone. “It was still dark and raining heavily at that time of the morning,” she said. They started a search party at the time but could not find him. “The relatives of the person started a search party and the police were not really helpful in terms of copies of the flier they had arranged. The family had to go make copies themselves,” said Julian Unthank, chair of the Community Policing Forum of Eerste River and Greater Blue Downs. “They also had no assistance in terms of a search team being arranged. Currently they are still searching,” he said. The family are from 6 Antonie Delange Street in Hillview, where Riaan lives with his mother and sister.

Suid-Afrika is ’n boom-arm land. Kleinvlei High class of 1996 wanted! If you were in matric at Kleinvlei High in 1996, your presence is needed to make this class’s reunion a smashing success. This is the message from the new community organisation Education Horizon, which focuses mainly on uplifting Kleinvlei’s youth and the community at large through education. Their launch event, the matric reunion, will take place from 12:00 on Saturday 28 September at 55 Strelitzia Street, Eerste River. The theme for this bring-and-braai will be “Courageous Generation”. The organisation works in close partnership with other community organisations like the Teen Challenge Rehabilitation Centre in Melton Rose. For the event, the organisers are asking these former matriculants “to just pitch on the day”, said Johanie Malgas, part of the steering committee. The other members of the steering committee are Antonio Coericius and Chamoney De Voux. If you fit the bill, Johanie is also inviting you to add them on Facebook for more details on the reunion. “The reunion serves to be an uplifting experience in the area, which is currently riddled with gang violence and poverty,” he said. “It will serve to unite a large group of friends – who were once labelled by the school as ‘rebellious’ – of which 170 still managed to empower ourselves by passing matric in 1996,” he said. “We hope to form a support group for our generation (around the 35-year-old mark), as many of us are still living in the community and are also facing the stumbling blocks and personal problems of the broader community. “Most of us have reached success in our life and would like to plough back, or at least set an example to youth, that crime does not pay, and education does,” he said. hat started out as a plate breaking, turned into a “hostage” situation – with smashed viennas, a sjambok and claims of underage and naked searches of customers at Wesbank’s only supermarket. According to a number of residents, the alleged wrong-doing and abuse has been going on since the Wesbank Family Store opened, and two of the key players in the drama around the searches and other serious claims, are the manager and one of the security guards. Wendy Rin, manager, and Benjamin (presumed to be from the DRC), who refused to supply his surname to TygerBurger, are known throughout Wesbank for their alleged unsavoury treatment of customers. A story unfolds that denies belief. Ludicka de Villiers entered the family store and left her shopping bag on the cellphone counter’s glass pane. The parcel counter was unattended at the time. “The security saw me putting my bag there. When I wanted to leave, and taking my bag from the cellphone counter, someone knocked into me from behind,” said Ludicka. “In that instant when I took my bag, it snagged his (Benjamin’s) plate, from which he normally ate, from the cellphone counter. The plate fell and broke. It wasn’t my fault and I tried to explain what had happened. “He refused to let me go until I had re-

Heritage Day fun in Park Village Residents are reminded of the fun day planned for them in Park Village for Heritage Day. It will be a great day to spend time with the kids, relax, and enjoy neighbours’ and friends’ company while the kids take part in a treasure hunt and have their faces painted. There will also be a jumping castle, food stalls, and a potjiekos competition. And for those who can sing, there will be the special “Noot vir Noot” karaoke session at the park in Hermes Street. The Park Village Youth Committee is responsible for all this fun on 24 September. Petro-Ann Nicholas, secretary of the committee, reiterated that they wanted to give the community something to look forward to. As if all this festivity isn’t enough, there will also be band performances and something yummie to eat for the youngsters, she said. “This event has to be an unforgettable experience for young and old,” Petro-Ann said. Mfuleni CPF to meet The Mfuleni Community Policing Forum would like to invite all community organisations and structures to a general meeting. The meeting will be held on 26 September at 18:00 at the Mfuleni police station boardroom. Each organisation is requested to send two delegates to attend.

placed his plate. He then took my groceries and smashed the sausages that were in my grocery bag,” she said. At the same time, TygerBurger was around the corner at the Wesbank Multipurpose Centre with Ricardo le Roux, a community leader. When Ricardo got the call from Neville Hartnick, the owner of a small shop outside the supermarket, to come and assist Ludicka with the incident, we hurried to the scene of the incident. When confronted with TygerBurger’s questions, Rin refused to answer about other allegations such as this one – that the community has complained about to Ricardo in the past. “I’m not giving any answers, you are

rude,” she told TygerBurger, and tried to convince Ludicka to replace Benjamin’s plate, so the whole drama could be solved. Ludicka refused, because it had been an accident. On hearing the questions TygerBurger was directing at Wendy, Benjamin kept shouting to her: “Wendy, she’s nothing! She wants to scare you, don’t say anything!” When Rin insisted that she wanted to sort the problem out right there, Benjamin could be heard shouting inside the supermarket: “She won’t get out! I won’t let her leave! She will buy me a new plate!” And so the “hostage” situation started. TygerBurger next called the police for assistance.

5

Mfuleni police immediately dispatched two constables, Bonginkosi Makaula and Pahmo Nyai, to the scene when hearing that security was refusing to allow Ludicka to leave the store. Before confronting him the constable confirmed that Benjamin had been involved in a stabbing incident at the store before. “Are you here to search the people, or to intimidate the customers?” Makaula asked Benjamin. He then publicly denied refusing Ludicka to exit the store. Makaula then advised him about proper and legal searching practices. “Before you can search a person, you need to ask their permission. Then you need to take them to a private place. People will always get upset if you just search them,” he said. Ludicka decided not to replace Benjamin’s plate, and the police subsequently left. Outside the store, Jacqueline Bassick told TygerBurger: “That tall one (Benjamin), the last time, he slapped my son, Donnell. He called my son a gangster,” she said. Sharon Tieties had a more serious concern. “They searched my baby boy four times when he was just three years old,” she said. “All those times, he went with his carer to the supermarket. The third time, she got suspicious and wondered why, every time she and Shagon (now five) went there, the guys searched the baby right into his underpants,” Sharon said. “When I confronted him (Benjamin), he got angry and yelled at me,” she alleged.

Preschoolers step ahead for disabled kids The staff at Step Ahead Educare in Kuils River could not have known what a profound effect a recent visit would have on their lives. The school’s teachers paid a visit to Sivenathi, a licensed home for severely disabled children in Blackheath. These children, most of whom cannot do anything for themselves, immediately did the greatest thing for these educators: they crept straight into their hearts. So much so that Step Ahead has decided, as one of their main objectives for 2013, to make social contributions to mentally and physically challenged children, and as such, to raise much-needed funds for these special kids.

Sivenathi’s gratitude is immense. “We at Sivenathi hereby humbly express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Step Ahead Educare for their campaign towards helping our vulnerable and helpless kids,” Gideon Dalupa, manager at Sivenathi, said. “It is tearful to know that Sivenathi’s helpers are little children, innocent children. They are only one to six years old, yet at such a young age they are being taught to be kind and giving...Otherwise, how do we change the world? “Please help the little ones at Step Ahead Educare to help us. planned. “To realise our objective, everyone at Step Ahead is dedicated to the cause, and we are energised, excited and eager to raise funds to help these vulnerable children,” said Gail Eckhard, coordinator of the fundraiser. “Based on a needs assessment, our educare aims to provide curtains, bedding, wash buckets, kitchen utensils, paint, nappies, pyjamas, socks, toothbrushes, face cloths, soap and a washing machine and tumble dryer,” Gail said. Sivenathi will be receiving the intended social contributions during “an extravagant Debutante Ballroom event” on 5 October at the Sarepta community centre from 19:00 to 23:00, she said.

“The Phoenix Dance Company has committed to making a free contribution in the form of ballroom dancing,” Gail said. She said the creche wanted to express their commitment to the cause by inviting companies to sponsor their learners with special white T-shirts on which they wish to print: “We support the disabled”. The T-shirts will then be worn on Fridays. “We would like readers to realise that we all have a social responsibility. Someone has to do something to make a difference in the life of at least one mentally or physically disabled child.” V All interested parties can contact Gail Eckhard of the Step Ahead fundraising committee at 084 561 6352.

Our cultural diversity also our strength Heritage day (24 September), also known as National Braai Day as the result of a pointed 2005 media campaign, was not originally intended to be an official South African public holiday. But, when the Inkatha Freedom Party with its large Zulu membership, refused to sign the Public Holiday’s Bill because it omitted the inclusion of Shaka Day, a concession was made. Each year Zulu kings and warriors gather at King Shaka’s grave in Stanger and honour him on this day. King Shaka was the legendary Zulu king who played an important role in uniting disparate Zulu clans into a cohesive nation. It’s probably in this spirit that Heritage Day should be celebrated. Shaka will also be remembered as a heartless warrior, changing the tools and style of Zulu warfare to be effective in close contact, relentlessly and even brutally training his soldiers, and confusing his enemies with brilliant war strategies, thus gaining respect – and fear – of all nations, including the British and European settlers of the time. But it’s his brilliant ability to unite nations without shedding a drop of blood, that should also be celebrated. South Africans across the spectrum are therefore encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions on this day and to be committed and proud of the group you belong to, but also to embrace others’ heritage – and learn from it.

SMS V My husband of 50 years passed away at Karl Bremer on 3 September. I would like to thank the five lady doctors who battled to save him as well as the nursing staff of the emergency ward, ward 4A and ICU for their loving care. There are lots of criti cism of state hospitals, but he could not have had better care anywhere. Bless you all for your compassion and dedication. Rosemary Langmann V Why is Koeberg Road now being chopped up and Potsdam roadworks sus pended? Finish one then start the other. We waste thousands of rands of petrol and wear and tear just sitting idling. Dis ongelooflik. Anon V Duisend dankies vir die berig oor die “consumers protection act” (“Yes, you can return retail goods”, 11/09). Marius, Durbanville V Our postal service is world class. Letter from Milnerton to UK village in four days and its not the first time! Yendor ) SMS’e kos R1,50 elk.

INWONER Stellenberg

Why are we hiding beautiful gardens? Yes, Mr Jack Traut of La Rochelle (“All this protection

obscures the beauty”, TygerBurger, 11 September) this is what I just cannot believe. Instead of getting a satellite service in, everyone fights on his own, spending money they do not even have, but nothing gets accomplished. They destroy their beautiful gardens, for what? ANON Email

La Rochelle not what it used to be Re: “All the protection obscures the beauty”, TygerBurger, 11 September: Having lived in La Rochelle for 20 years, yes there have been changes. It is very costly to water an expanse of lawn these days. As a ratepaying citizen I am also expected to foot the bill for watering and tending the council verges. Maybe Mr Traut would like to subsidise my water bill. La Rochelle is a beautiful suburb which used to be peaceful, but no longer where I am situated. I am surrounded by dogs that bark every day, sometimes for hours on end, the continual smell of excrement in the air because dog owners cannot be bothered to clean up their yards, children that scream continuously, people sawing and grinding... As for the social problems, I think that it is the responsibility of government to sort it out. ANON La Rochelle

Bank teller worthy of our high praise I would like to express my gratitude to the teller, Danielle Neethling, at ABSA Bank, N1 City Mall. She provided incomparable service to an octogenarian father who has been their client for many years. My siblings and I had accompanied him to the bank on Saturday morning, 14 September. The bank requested

additional documentation to complete the desired transaction. We supplied these and were assisted as the bank was closing. The process was a lengthy one and the teller stayed behind for more than 45 minutes after the bank had officially closed to complete it. We were critically aware that it was the start of her weekend. If she had been disgruntled or rushed to conclude the transaction, we would rightly have understood. However, she was professional, patient and kind throughout. She deserves to be lauded for such dazzling service; wholly exceeding expectation. Thank you! IMOGEN CAMPBELL Vrijzee

You with the noisy bikes, cars: grow up! Camps bay and Constantia have their Porsches and Ferraris. What does Parow have? Parow has motor bikes and skedonks. These operate with impunity shattering the air with their noise as their owners strive to exact every bit of sound from the exhaust pipes while racing up Mcintyre street direction N1. Their meteoric progress can still be heard for kilometres by all the neighbourhood for minutes afterwards. They derive great pleasure by causing loud bangs in the smaller streets as they rip home and park in their driveways. All of this to “impress” the neighbours with their alpha behaviour. Neighbours are too intimidated or timid to approach these offensive characters and ask them to tone down their Grand Prix imitations. I remember as kids playing with dinky toys in the dust to loud brooombroooms. The more rich and loud the more powerful the toy. In short, grow up guys, so we can wave a friendly wave as you pass by instead of throwing down the tools in anger. ANON Web letter

NUUS NEWS

TYGERBURGER | EERSTERIVIER & BLUEDOWNS Woensdag, 18 September 2013

Soveel méér as net petroldampe MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

V

Graeme Daniels werk al ’n jaar by dié vulstasie in Eersterivier. “Daar is baie stres hier,” sê Graeme.

Community reminded of march against gang violence and crime

The community is once again reminded to take part in a march against gang violence. Residents of Park Village have organised the march and wish to make a positive change in their neighbourhoods after Eerste River went through a spate of gang-related incidents. Petro-Ann Nicholas, secretary of the Park Village Youth Committee, asked the community to rock up in droves Saturday 5 October to show their support for a gang free Kleinvlei and broader Eerste River.

“Communities must start to work together and stand up against drug abuse and gangsterism in Kleinvlei. We must let our voices be heard, and heard very clearly,” she reiterated. The route for the march will start at the Kleinvlei police station, via Station Road through Melton Rose, Spandau, a part of Keerom Street, and will end at the Kleinvlei sport grounds. The march will include prayers. V Contact PetroAnn Nicholas (secretary) of the Park Village Youth Committee at 083 230 5538 with queries.

Dié is ’n pastoor. “Dis ongelukkig ‘no work, no pay’.

Wrestling prize: champ’s belt

LFA: TOURNAMENT

Teams are on their way THOMAS CAROLUS

XWE (Xtreme Wrestling Entertainment) is set to bring the action to the Kraaifontein City Hall on Monday 23 September at 20:00. Several top wrestlers and live entertainment promises for a fun-filled evening. When asked, owner Johan Lamprecht described the Kraaifontein City Hall as: “A perfect venue for wrestling, the venue can house about 1 000 fans. It’s just perfect for our great wrestling fans.” XWE has had great success in the Kraaifontein and Brackenfell areas, having had several shows including a family day show and a show in association with the local church. XWE is set to deliver their biggest show to date. On 23 September XWE will be presenting Rise of the Champions in association with Burger Le Roux and Pierre Rossouw. The night will be filled with wrestling action, an MMA tournament, singing superstar performances and some special added surprises. Tricore Freestyle MMA is an MMA training centre closely tied to XWE; they have also bred several MMA champions. XWE has always said that when the time was right they would crown their first champion, and the time will be right on 23 September. The long-awaited championship belt will be contested for in one main event showdown. Also two legends will

of any other activities over the duration of this football spectacular. Northern Suburbs Local Football Association is once again proud to associate with, and support, this tournament. This tournament is very unique and quite special; it is one community tournament that attracts teams from all over the country.

T

he Northern Suburbs’ Local Football Association is proud to be host of the Inter-Provincial Local Football Association tournament over the weekend. The tournament venues will be Saturday at Symphony Park, on Sunday at Blue Downs Sport grounds and at Avonwood on Monday 23 September. The LFAs are Northern Suburbs, Breibacht FA, Northern Areas FA, Du Noon LFA, Delft LFA, Langa LFA, Cape District LFA, Mfuleni LFA, Pietermaritzburg FA and North End FA.

Quality This tournament has demonstrated that South African football is alive and well, and that it has many players of high quality, who are able to represent our country at the highest level. It will also give the visiting players from other parts of South Africa a chance to see Cape Town. Besides playing football this weekend they can make the time to visit our natural beauty including our magnificent Table Mountain, voted one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, our pristine beaches and of course Robben Island.

Fans This football event brings to this region, province and country, for the opportunity it presents to all the participants, the entertainment and competition it delivers to the thousands of supporters and football fanatics who unashamedly clear their calendars
