Origami fun unfolds

L
earners from two Cape Town Schools, Harvest Primary in Mitchells Plain, and Wesbank Primary 1 in Kuils River have been given the opportunity to be taught the art of origami by the master himself. Sipho Mabona, a Swiss origami artist, together with Woolworths has made this initiative possible. As part of the 2014 Woolies Back to School campaign, the retailer decided to partner with internationally acclaimed origami artist Sipho to create bespoke artworks for an ad campaign that centres around safety features, and the unique innovations, that make their Back To School range different. Sipho has been creating paper airplanes since the age of five and after 15 years of folding paper planes, he ran out of designs and turned to origami for inspiration.
Shapes He remembers when he was small their landlord always use to tell his mom that if he doesn’t stop throwing airplanes out of the window, then he will have to evict them. Now aged 33, his styles include intricate representational designs to abstract geometrical shapes. Sipho who’s actually a teacher, said while he was studying he was getting really bored in class. Most of the time he would rather sit and make different kind of shapes out of paper. “Origami is an art that relies heavily on the imagination of the beholder. Children have a wonderful imagination, so it’s been great to work on something for children,” said Sipho. Therapeutic This was nothing new at all to the learners from Wesbank Primary 1 School. Kyoko Morgan teaches origami to the learners twice a week. She says: “It’s very therapeutic for the kids. While you are busy working in class a child will start opening up about their circumstances at home. Which usually aren’t such pleasant things to listen to.” Sipho says that he wants to spread origami to other places especially to underprivileged places where people can see that you can actually make something out of nothing. “It is
a privilege for us to be able to bring such a unique art form to learners in South Africa.” “Origami is an interesting and specialised skill that embraces something as basic as a flat piece of paper and turning it into something spectacular, of high value. There are very few people as skilled as Sipho so learning from him is a great honour,” said Fred Benistant, creative director at Woolworths.

According to our records we have received complaints about assaults, robberies and domestic violence originating from the abuse of alcohol,” Theunis said. They also meet the wrong kinds of people at bars and clubs,” he added. Theunis said that in the coming holiday season the Goodwood police will take on a no-tolerance stand on the abuse of alcohol. “We will bring in more forces to assist us with this,” he said.

According to the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) the crisis on South Africa’s roads demands a tougher approach. The AA continues to lobby for the blood alcohol limit to be brought in line with world standards. “The AA has for some time proposed that the 0.05 % limit be reduced to 0.02 %,” says AA spokesperson Graeme Scala. “This allows some leeway for medications that contain alcohol, but still emphasises that one alcoholic drink puts you over the limit. A blood alcohol limit of 0.02 % means than drinking even one beer (4% alcohol per volume) will put an individual over the limit.” Should you be caught driving under the influence of alcohol you could face up to six years in prison and/or be slapped with a fine of up to R120 000. Alcohol abuse is the main contributing factor to road accidents. Richard Coleman, media spokesperson for traffic services for the City of Cape Town, says every driver has a responsibility to be safe on the roads if they drink any alcohol and they are planning to get on the road. “If you have used any substance that could affect your driving ability then let someone who has not, drive your vehicle. If no one is available then call one of the companies that provides a lift service,” he says. In South Africa, the legal limit when driving is a blood alcohol count of 0,05 grams per 100 ml. In the case of a professional driver, it is 0,02 grams per 100 ml of blood. In literal terms this equals two thirds of a beer or spirit cooler with 5 % alcohol content; 75ml of red or white wine per hour with an alcohol content of 12 % to 14 %; and up to one 25ml tot of alcohol per hour for whiskey or brandy drinkers. Two drinks in one hour will more than likely put you over the legal limit. Coleman adds that people should obey the rules of the road and also, not use a cellphone when driving. “Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. The rule is simple: Do not drink and drive,” he said. According to Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, spokesperson of the South African Police Service’s media office, the office is not in a position to provide any information on the subject of drunk driving due to the moratorium on the release of statistics as well as the fact that culpable homicide cases are not categorised as being drunk driving related. New Life Community Projects in Uitsig is on a mission of making children a positive part of their community. This initiative in the area is part of groundbreaking work of psychologist Professor Gerrie Smit, currently the executive director of the organisation. He has worked with communities in need for many years and his particular focus is on children at risk, drug abuse, out-ofschool youth and street children. Smit is also currently a member of an international research group investigating family violence in impoverished communities and also heads a project aimed at alleviating poverty in high-risk communities. While he visited the site last week he pointed out that New Life Community Projects has been active since 1996. “Our other project is in Beaufort West and the focus of this programme is on vulnerable families and children at risk for not going to school, those that dropped out of school or living on the streets,” he says. “The project operates from community based container facilities and community based “home schools” for children that are out of school, identified through street outreach work on the streets of these communities. “These home schools are run by trained women from the community in their homes to provide educational and therapeutic support for children and their families, to ensure sustained school attendance and positive family life.”
Family Smit also explained that another focus was on strengthening mother-child attachment via therapeutic interactive video guidance, interactive involvement of fathers and other family members to prevent children from leaving the family and dropping out of school. “It is about giving vulnerable families and children access to therapeutic and educational support on a 24-hour basis, run by community members themselves. “The project is based on principles of good practice that will ensure the activities are relevant and effective for the target population. “An essential element is the understanding that a positive and caring family and community environment is essential in developing self-esteem and a sense of belonging in children. Dis vir ’n verandering baie verfrissend om na hip-hop-musiek te luister met ’n positiewe boodskap. Dié inisiatief is moontlik gemaak deur die departement van onderwys. Mariline Roman en Natasha Olifant, wat die werksessie bygewoon het, sê hulle het baie geleer oor hoe om hul gesin te bestuur en konflik met gesinslede te hanteer.
Mans én vroue het die werksessie bygewoon. Hulle was in afsonderlike lokale verdeel waar hulle ingelig was oor hul rol as ouers, positiewe selfbeeldontwikkeling, die ontwikkelingstadiums van kinders en ook hoe om die transformasie van kinders te ondersteun, monitor en te hanteer. Daarna is hulle weer saamgevoeg om hul interpretasie van die nuwe inligting met mekaar deur rolspel te deel. Fasiliteerders het ook wenke met ouers gedeel.
Dawn’s soup kitchen open The Dawn Cares community centre has taken on a new initiative to empower the underprivileged in their community. A soup kitchen is up and running feeding communities in Sarepta, Kuils River and Kalkfontein three times a week. They distribute different delicious meals

The aftereffects of Guy Fawkes The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate was inundated with complaints about the illegal discharge of fireworks as people marked Guy Fawkes’ Day on 5 November, despite the repeated and widely publicised calls for the responsible use of fireworks. “This demonstrates once again that while the city does as much as it can, the buy-in from communities is essential,” said the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith. In Table View, for instance, two people were fined for illegally discharging fireworks. Three injuries were recorded in this area, in-
cluding a four-year-old boy who sustained burn wounds to his left hand as a result of malfunctioning fireworks. Officers also confiscated several bottles of alcohol. “It is impossible for the city’s Law Enforcement officers to be everywhere and police every incident of the illegal discharge of fireworks, especially since these ‘celebrations’ are not limited to one day, but tend to stretch over several weeks. “Guy Fawkes proves to be a headache every single year and I think the time has come to start having a serious conversation about ways to mitigate the impact on residents.
“Whether this be engaging national government on imposing a ban on the sale of fireworks or setting limitations on when fireworks can be sold or used (for instance gatherings like Diwali), or lobbying for stiffer penalties for transgressors. Psigopaat bekend as mens sonder ’n gewete Ons sal in drie aflewerings “die psigopaat” bespreek. Vandag is die eerste artikel, maar jy moet verseker nie die volgende paar weke se uitgawes van die koerant misloop nie. Ons hoor die term “psigopaat” redelik algemeen gebruik. Vir meeste mense roep ’n psigopaat beelde op van ’n fliek soos “Silence of the Lambs” of van ’n wreedaardige moordenaar. Soms word psigopatie ook verwar met psigose as versteuring. Nie alle psigopate is egter misdadigers, reeksmoordernaars en verkragters nie. Net soos alle misdadigers, swendelaars en moordenaars weer nie as psigopate geklassifiseer kan word nie. Wat is ’n psigopaat? Dr. Robert Hare, ’n kenner op die gebied van psigopatie, omskryf psigopate as na binnegerigte uitbuiters wat sjarme, manipulasie, intimidasie en geweld gebruik om ander te beheer en om hul eie selfsugtige behoeftes te bevredig. Hulle toon ’n gebrek aan gewete en gevoel vir ander mense, en sal koelbloedig vat wat hulle wil hê en doen soos wat hulle goed dink en sosiale norms en verwagtinge verbreek sonder die geringste gevoel van skuld of jammerte. Een van die eienskappe van ’n psigopaat is sy onvermoë om diepgaande emosies te ervaar. Dit beteken egter nie dat hy nie bekend is met emosies nie, maar hy gebruik dit op meesterlike wyse en op ’n slinkse manier. Sy gedrag en optrede is egosentries en hy gee nie om vir ander mense se gevoelens of vir sosiale verantwoordelikheid nie. Die psigopaat se persoonlike verhoudinge is sonder diepte en dikwels van kortstondige duur, terwyl hy tog sal vertel van sy goeie verhoudinge met mense. Die psigopaat is bekend vir sy vermoë om te manipuleer. Hy doen dit gewoonlik om op die gevoel van ander te speel om te kry wat hy wil hê. ’n Voorbeeld hiervan is ’n swendelaar wat ’n meisie trou vir haar geld, haar gebruik en dan los om weer aan te beweeg. Wanneer die psigopaat hom vasloop of uitgevang word, toon hy gevoel en jammerte. Hierdie jammerte is egter vals en nie ware skuldgevoelens vir onreg en seerkry wat hy iemand anders aangedoen het nie, maar eerder om die gevolge van sy optrede te hanteer. Die psigopaat staan dan ook bekend as iemand wat nie ’n gewete het nie. Hy toon ’n gebrek aan berou en skuldgevoelens oor ’n misdaad of antisosiale gedrag. ’n Kenmerk van die psigopaat is sy onvermoë om positief uit vorige slegte ervarings te leer. Daarom word baie van die psigopaat se antisosiale of misdadige gedrag herhaal. Hierdie is maar enkele kenmerke van die psigopaat. Volgende week kyk ons verder hierna. Moet asseblief nie nou rondloop en mense links en regs psigopate noem nie! Die evaluering en diagnosering deur ’n gekwalifiseerde professionele kundige persoon soos ’n psigiater is nodig. Want sien, ons Suid-Afrikaners vier nog net so lekker Guy Fawkes as in die verlede – ondanks die feit dat net sekere gebiede toegewys is daarvoor en dat net sekere handelaars vuurwerke mag verkoop. Ongelukkig word daar nie by dié reëls gehou nie. Vuurwerke word steeds geskiet in woonbuurte en onwettig verkoop in die informele handel. Buiten die jaarlikse hoeveelheid ernstige beserings aan veral kinders (selfs blindheid), sorg dié argaïese Britse feesviering vir die allerverskriklikste uitwerking op honde reg oor die Skiereiland. Honde verstaan nie dat die simpel mensdom maar net iets vier wat in 1605 in Brittanje gebeur het nie (toe Guy Fawkes die Britse parlementsgebou met buskruit in sy peetjie wou blaas). Nee, vir baie honde is dit so goed soos ’n oordeelsdag waar alle hel rondom hulle vlamgevat het. Baie raak beserk, en beseer hulleself deur vasgevang te word in draadheinings en veiligheidshekke. Baie kies die hasepad, beland voor motors of beseer hulself op ’n ander manier. Baie keer nooit weer terug na hul huise nie. Veeartse sal bevestig dat die geestelike skade wat honde opdoen wat aan geraasfobie ly, ernstiger is as die fisieke skade. Is dit regtig nog nodig vir Suid-Afrikaners om jaarliks dié Britse malligheid te gedenk? Beslis nie!

We must all buy proudly SA Companies continue to import products that could be made locally. South Africa has become an import economy while raw materials remain a key export. Even food production that was once an economic pillar is being imported. This must change if we hope to create work. Since commerce is driven by profit, it operates where profits exist, thus job creation is a result of business and not necessarily its agenda. It is therefore important that locals support commerce that has a long-term benefit for our society. Imported products support job creation outside of South Africa and contribute to local job loss. That local political and business leaders are obsessed with foreign status symbols reflects a lack of commitment to the “Proudly South African” campaign. While locals buy affordable products, many social leaders eagerly showcase their imported lifestyle. Furthermore, building a durable economy with millions of economic migrants within our borders is a challenge. The value of local labour is undermined because desperate foreigners are cheaper to employ. So, when unskilled, cheap migrant labour remains within our borders, they also burden the limited supply of water, electricity, municipal and hospital services available to locals. The burden on the ratepayer increases as the economic refugee makes an impact on the progress of infrastructure. Those who live in comfort must assist the less fortunate trapped in poverty by creating local jobs. I suggest locals continue to support businesses which have our shared long-term interests at heart. Paying more for a

Make bridges not holes in fences In response to “Cross railway lines where it’s safe”, TygerBurger Kraaifontein, 6 November: Reading this article I noticed that no one posed the question “Why?” Why are holes been cut in fences and why is the line being crossed at these specific points? I stay near Eikenfontein station. From my house I have to take a close to one hour journey, on foot, through Scottsville, one of the more notorious suburbs in Kraaifontein. Yet my house is in a five minute, direct line from Eikenfontein station. The bridge at Eikenfontein station is completely blocked off by fencing, which does not allow travellers access from one side of the railway line to the other, except via Scottsville. A danger most try and avoid. Yes and the sad part is that it’s the sickly, aged, infirm and children who utilise the holes in the fences. Simple solution, build bridges and subways or redesign existing bridges to make it safer to cross lines. RICHARD PICK Kraaifontein
Bikers make more noise than Zeppelin Your front page story (“Pure Harley-vreugde”, TygerBurger Durbanville, 6 November) was a good read, however I would greatly appreciate it if the general motorbike crowd would be more community spirited as regards the noise emissions from their machines and the adherence to speed limits. My house borders Eversdal/ Fairtrees/Lubbe Street and apart from the trucks who use
their air brakes, the motorcyclists are by far the noisiest vehicles flying past my house on a daily basis. Over weekends the volume (both in terms of numbers and sound) increases tremendously. Despite the law limiting the sound emissions, some of these machines can still be heard 700 metres and more passed my house. Some of the smaller engines have this high pitch scream while some of the bigger bikes growl deep enough that you cannot hear the bass from Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” (something not even my mother could get right). I shudder to think what will happen when these guys (or ladies) misjudge the change in the traffic lights and smash into a car... There have been a number of accidents at the Stodels bend but now a speed camera has been installed... Maybe we should install a few more traffic cameras. D ROSSOUW Durbanville
Thanks for getting me out of paper jam I would just like to comment on the “Slice of Life”, TygerBurger, 6 November. I was involved in that accident where the truck transporting the newspapers hit my car first, overturned and then hit a few more vehicles in front of me. Thank heavens there were no critical injuries in the accident, but I would like to commend the emergency teams that helped all involved. They did outstanding work on that morning and I would like to say thank you so much to all of you. I would also like to thank the gentleman Phillip from Odendaal break-down services who was absolutely amazing in helping me retrieve my belongings, contacting my insurance and assisting my husband in getting to me at the accident. Uitenhage boxers can’t take heat It was a horrid outing for Uitenhage boxers when they came down to participate in the “Battle of the North” in scorching weather in a tournament outside Van Riebeck Hof Mall in Durbanville recently. The fight was staged by Xtreme Boxing Promotions and sponsored by DALS Motor Group, Studio Pascal and Cape Road Assist. First to taste defeat was Mzuvukile Daniels who faced a stocky but “boxable” Zimbabwean flyweight Alexander Gambinda. Daniels gave signs of hope but was soon bombarded by assortments of heavy blows by Gambinda forcing referee Clifford Mbelu to stop the fight in the third round. Asanda Jacobs faced Knysna’s left handed Daniel Julies – with both intent on knocking the lights out of each other it was the lanky Khayelitsha fighter who came out tops.

Daniels kissed the canvas in round two and was counted out by Deon Dwarte. In the main bout Bulelani Kwanini faced a tough and clinical Johaness “The Pearl of Paarl” Salie. Kwanini showed he could box as he had Salie huffing and puffing in the first two rounds. From round three the fitter Salie ruled with an iron fist and dropped Kwanini with a vicious punch that connected the ribcage. He dropped like a pole and ringside doctors had to resuscitate him. Xtreme Boxing Promotions manager Wesley Levendal thanked all those who braved the scorching sun: “Could not be more proud of my boxer Johannes Salie; I asked him for a third round knock-out and that’s exactly what he did,” said Levendal.
