wo young men from Eerste River, Selwyn Lottering (20) and Dewandre Fritz (19) started a project to assist matriculants with their matric ball.

The project “I Will Help A Friend In Need” was established in 2019 when the men wanted to assist matriculants who are financially unable to fund their matric farewells.

“Both of us struggled financially with our matric ball, we know how it feels to have nothing a week before the matric ball,” says Lottering.

Lottering says they saw the potential and a need in the Kleinvlei community and took a leap of faith.

The name of the project came about when they were discussing their own need for assistance and how they want to help others who are in the same situation. They know how it feels to be in need of finances or a support structure.” says Lottering.

The project does not have specific criterion but what is important is that the learner’s school fees need to be paid and there must

be a definite need for the child. All the matriculant has to do, is to approach them and tell them what they need.

The men provide a vehicle, dresses or suits, shoes, decorations for the house, ticket money and hairstylists from the barber or salon. All these items and services are donated by the community. At the moment they are helping five learners from Kleinvlei High School.

“Excited, proud, satisfied, anxious,” said Lottering, those were the emotions he felt when they helped their first matriculant earlier this year.

According to Fritz, they have received positive feedback from their community and the community is willing to help in any way possible. The majority of their candidates are from Eerste River, but they are open to helping matriculants in other areas as well.

They help out at the schools by giving motivational speeches and help the learners with their academics. Their project, I Will Help A Friend In Need is the sister project of #TheDifference, which is a school mentorship programme run at Kleinvlei Secondary and Melton Primary schools.

School transport should be safe

Schools and parents should monitor the safety of transport used by learners. This request was made after the City of Cape Town transport enforcement unit impounded a minibus at a school during an operation in Kuils River on Thursday 29 August.

Richard Coleman, spokesperson of the City traffic service, says officers stopped the

VW microbus outside a primary school. There were eight children, aged between 10 and 13, inside. The driver didn’t have a driving license or public driving permit, nor an operating license. Officers also found four crates of alcohol and two, five litre bottles of alcohol in the boot. The driver received a fine and the vehicle was impounded.

crisis in firefighting in the City of Cape Town is lurking if firefighters affiliated to the trade union South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), execute their threat to work only office hours from 1 October.

In a letter to the City, dated 28 August, MacGregor Erasmus Attorneys informed the City, on behalf of Samwu, that all its members will only work strict 40-hour shifts according to their employment contracts, effectively from 1 October – thus normal office hours from 07:30 to 16:00.

Firefighters work 80 hours overtime per month, as they need to be on standby in 24hour shifts at the fire brigade after hours, over weekends and on public holidays.

The City has remunerated these workers for the additional 80 hours by paying them an allowance of 22.8% of their salary over about 10 years.

With about 60% of firefighters in the City, members of Samwu and 40% of another trade union, it will affect more than half of the fire department’s operational workforce.

According to the letter, the firefighters have continued to work 240 hours overtime per month in good faith and in the interest of service delivery, despite the absence of a collective agreement.

“Samwu has on numerous occasions requested that their members get paid for the additional 80 hours they work per month in accordance with the provisions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) or the City’s own overtime policies.

“Samwu’s members have decided that they will no longer work these excessive hours without being paid for it lawfully ...,” according to the letter.

The City has been given a month to make the necessary arrangements, stated the letter.

This letter came after Samwu withdrew from negotiations for a fire services collective agreement in November last year.

According to Archie Hearne, a Samwu organisor in Cape Town, the 22.8% allowance for overtime has been in place since 2012, while at other municipalities firefighters are paid a much higher allowance – up to 80% for instance at the Polokwane municipality.

“We have engaged with the City to propose new conditions and better working conditions, but nothing has materialised.

“All stood still since 2012, until last year when a deadlock was reached and we have withdrawn from negotiations,” he said.

According to Hearne, they have asked for an increase in the overtime rate from 22.8% to 72%. They were offered a 30% overtime rate last year, but rejected it, he said to Ty-

gerBurger.

From information TygerBurger obtained anonymously, it seemed that a firefighter (40) with 20 years service earns R22 052 per month in Cape Town.

According to the source, with the current 22.8% allowance for overtime, he gets paid R5 028 before tax is deducted.

Of the 22.8% overtime rate, 10% is for working night shifts, and the other 12.8% is for the extra 80 after hours on Sundays and public holidays.

“The firefighters have to stay on the fire station premises and are not allowed to leave at all during their 24-hour shifts.

“However, officers and heads are allowed to go home at 16:00 to be on standby from home and also getting paid the 22.8% allowance.

“One such officer has received approximately R19 000 in allowance, whilst they very seldom get called for assistance.

“This is notat all fair,” according to the source.

The City did not respond to any of TygerBurger’s enquiries, except for Richard Bosman, executive director for safety and security of the City, confirming that the City has received the letter and “will respond appropriately”.

Bosman said residents are assured that services will be rendered on a sustainable basis.

The second annual Kuils River Chess Club Cayote Spur Challenge will take place at Zevenwacht Mall on Saturday 12 October from 09:00 until 14:00. Gurshwin Heinze, chairman and team manager of Kuils River Chess Club, says they launched the club at the inaugural event in August last year.

They are planning to have the tournament annually.

Heinze says the challenge is open to the schools in the area, but anybody who have a group, club or team can participate. Entry is free.

Thanks to the sponsor, Coyote Spur, there will be prizes for the best male and female players. The winning school team will also receive a floating trophy. Kuils River Primary School are the defending champions.

The challenge will take place in the Woolworths Court at the mall.

Last year about five schools participated and Heinze says, unfortunately, they can’t accommodate too many school teams. They are looking for eight to a maximum of 10 schools. He says they will also facilitate individuals who want to participate on the day but they will not be eligible for the pri-

zes.

The participants will play against each other and the scoring will be done by the organisers.

The team who had the most winners will determine who wins the trophy. Heinze says the main reason why they present the challenge in the mall and not in a hall somewhere, is for people to see.

“Not all schools offer chess and the club hope to spread some enthusiasm to get chess into more schools in the Kuils River area. “We want them all to have at least a chess team and then we want to get them to play each other.”

Keegan Solomons is the head coach at the Kuils River Chess Club (KRCC), which is affiliated with WP Chess. The club is open for boys and girls from age five and up, and for seniors. They meet every Wednesday at 18:00 at Soneike High School in Highbury for an hour.

Heinze says he tells parents they can pick their children up from 19:00, but if they still want to play a little longer, they can – until 20:00 latest, as it’s a school night. He says when they started KRCC they wanted to do things differently to other clubs where the children just play against each other.

According to Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police, the woman transferred the money into the account of someone she had met on an onli-

“The fraudster told the woman that he must get a gallbladder operation in Paris, France. He then asked her for money, whereby she transferred money into his account – first R20 000 and then twice the amount of R44 240. It was deposited into a Bidvest and Capitec account.

The two coaches do not charge for their services and the club membership covers their rental. Heinze says they are in need of some equipment and would like to have some club T-shirts made.

The KRCC is only a year old and Izzy Solomon (9) recently became the first club member to make the Western Province team. Izzy will represent the WP u.11 team at the SA Open in Johannesburg.

Ward councillor passes away CARINA ROUX

ommunity members were shocked to hear of the sudden passing of ward councillor Ricardo Saralina (48) on Sunday 1 September. Saralina suffered a severe stroke on Saturday afternoon and passed away on Sunday morning.

He was the ward councillor for ward 19, which include among others, Kalkfontein, parts of Sarepta and Highbury, Camelot and Wesbank. He became a staff member of the Democratic Alliance in 2012 and served as a constituency officer before being elected ward councillor in 2016.

Desiree Visagie, ward 11 councillor, said, ‘‘Saralina was an on the ground community person, loved by all and adored for his outgoing personality.’’

She said he will be missed by the community and colleagues for his passion for his work and his love for people. “He was very outspoken about issues near to his heart and went the extra mile to get things done and delivered. His legacy will live on through the changes he brought about in his ward.”

Johannes van der Merwe, chair of subcouncil 21 (which include wards 11 and 19), said he had the privilege of working with Saralina since December last year. He will remember Saralina for his enthusiasm and passion. “He was very proud about the projects in his ward such as the upgrade of the Kalkfontein Community Hall and the taxi rank in Wesbank.”

His wife of 23 years, Liezl, told TygerBurger she is still in shock. She knew him for 27 years, since she was 19. “He was the most genuine, caring person, with a good and open heart.”

Liezl said Saralina would always try to help and would sometimes send people electricity or buy them bread or milk. His favourite motto was, “honour your parents.” He

Ricardo Saralina believed one should have respect for your elders. He was a good father to their son, Leo (24) and they ‘‘could chat for hours’’, said Liezl.

There were many challenges on his path, but ‘‘nothing could get him down. He would always come out stronger.” She said he would always make time to take a call from a community member. He was not only ‘‘hands on” in the community, but he could also fix electrical and other stuff around the house, said Liezl.

V A memorial service will be held on Thursday 5 September at 19:00 at the Hoofweg Primary School in Wesbank. The funeral will be on Saturday 7 September out of the Bible Tabernacle Church in Welcome Estate. Further details were still to be confirmed at time of going to press.

Braxton coming in November Pop diva Toni Braxton recently confirmed the inclusion of South Africa on her As Long As I Live tour schedule.

Locals show off their products at beer fest Beer lovers flocked to GapeGate Shopping Centre for the Craft Beer festival over the weekend.

This year, the annual festival evolved into a fully-fledged craft beer festival, allowing local breweries to show off their

amazing produce as well as by-products.

Some of the breweries onboard included the very popular Boston Brewery, Italian Job, Kings Brewery, Red Sky Brewery and Shackleton Brewery. Desirée Rorke captured the merriment.

Badisa’s facilities now spick-and-span T

he facilities of Badisa Kuils River received a much-needed makeover courtesy of the Ackermans Ububele Volunteering programme on Friday 30 August.

The local Ackermans Support Centre has been working together with Badisa on various projects over the past nine years. This time they decided it was time to give Badisa’s facilities itself some attention with help from the Ackermans Ububele volunteering programme.

A team of nine directors and seven personal assistants from across Ackermans were hard at work on Friday to make the reception area, the therapeutic room and the garden area more child friendly.

A jungle gym and bench were put up, while used tyres were transformed into play equipment. The outside wall was

fixed and painted. Murals were added and a hopscotch painted on the pavement. Painting was also done on the inside. The paint was donated by building contractor E Williams Electrical while Top Carpets donated carpets and blinds.

New posters went up and the therapeutic room is a lot brighter after a LED light fitting was added. Ackermans donated some new furniture, bean bags, toy boxes and toys, buddy bears, cushions and blankets.

In the afternoon a fun day was hosted for the eight early childhood development playgroups supported by Badisa Kuils River. The children, 48 in total, each received a gift bag with stationery and other goodies. The eight day mothers also received a “thank you” goodie bag for themselves, as well as an activity box with educational toys inside.

The project team and the playgroups who came to enjoy the newly renovated facilities at Badisa.

Talk on cargo shipwrecks A talk on sunken cargoes in 500 years of the international maritime trade will be presented on Tuesday 10 September at 18:30 by the Western Cape branch of the S.A. Archaeological Society. It will take place at the auditorium of the SA Astronomical Observatory. John Gribble, will share evidence of South African shipwrecks. Historical shipwrecks comprise the bulk of SA’s underwater cultural heritage and are a vast repository of information – in particular for European maritime trade across the globe during the last five centuries. The cost is R10 for non-members.

Learn how to ward off an attacker W

hile evading an attack is always superior to blocking an attack, it’s still useful to know what to do when confronted by an assailant.

At TygerBurger’s annual self-defence morning taking place on Saturday 12 October, women will be taught simple yet practical moves to ward off an attacker.

The course is presented by Francois du Plessis, a 5th dan karate instructor with 36 years’ experience.

“No one ever wants to be in a situation where they have to fight for their lives, but the sad reality is we live in a country where women are attacked, raped and killed on a daily basis,” says Francois.

The past month’s brutal murders of Lynette Volschenk (32) from Bellville, Jesse Hess (18) from Parow, and University of Cape Town student, Uyinene Mrwetyana (19) come to mind.

“It’s all about being alert and aware of your surroundings. Subjects we discuss include body language, routine, safety at home and your children’s safety,” says Francois.

The event, sponsored by Bassett Alarms, will be held at Durbanville High School’s gymnasium from 09:00 to 11:00.

Mayor answers tariff questions DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

F

ollowing the recent complaint made to Nersa by civic action group Stop COCt, to probe electricity tariffs and levies in the City, TygerBurger posed more questions to mayor Dan Plato about issues raised Below is his response in a Q & A format.

Q: Why is the City’s rand and cent value of electricity tariffs higher than the rand and cent value approved by Nersa?

A: The total amount billed to customers includes the regulated portion of the tariff as approved by Nersa, as well as an unregulated portion that arises due to questions regarding Nersa’s authority under the Electricity Regulation Act to approve surcharges on the tariff versus the City’s authority under the Municipal Systems Act to implement these.

For the 2019/20 financial year, this unregulated tariff amounts to 23,4c/kWh. The electricity tariff consists of regulated and none regulated portions Nersa is only mandated to look at the regulated component thus the difference.

Q: Is the City prepared to sit around the table with Stop COCT as they requested a meeting to discuss the various questions and provide explanations as pertaining to their allegations?

A: The City’s political and administrative leadership has in the past spent many hours with Stop COCT and has also spent time responding to tariff-related and other matters in writing directly or indirectly, sadly to no avail, as this group has continued to ignore the information provided to them which has had the effect of misinforming members of public.

It is unfortunate that this group continues to falsely claim that the City does not engage with them. The City has always been and remains open to engaging all of our residents.

Q: Can the City supply proof that 65% goes

to Eskom?

As per the City’s budget figures, one can see that: . approximately 65% goes toward bulk purchases; . 10% goes toward the rates account for indigent assistance; . 25% for maintaining the electricity service Q: Did the city take the General Valuation for 2018 (GV2018) into account in that it would push property values up and into new tariff blocks, when they calculated the 8.88% increase?

Mayor Dan Plato A: Yes, absolutely. It actually led to an overall lower tariff increase than would otherwise have been the case.

In addition, when the tariffs were designed an estimation was made as to the impact of the new General Valuation on the revenue to be earned, which actually resulted in a lower overall tariff increase than would otherwise have been the case.

Q: According to Stop COCT, public participation was entirely ignored by the City, the Home User Charge was rejected by the public, but the City went ahead and increased it.

A: The City did not ignore the comments of the public. However, the City faces challenges in terms of fixed cost recovery that cannot be addressed without a change in the tariff structure to accommodate these. At no stage has Stop COCT or any other civil body made any counter-proposal that in any way addresses the challenges that are faced in the most optimal and sustainable manner, with due understanding of the pressure that the City is under and the balancing act that

is required in tough economic times. In terms of the number of complaints officially received when the tariffs were out for public comment as part of the budget, this was a relatively low number.

Approximately 0,05% of customers responded with any comment about the service charges. From these comments, half were directed at the national government sphere and energy. Where a concrete business case was provided about a set of tariffs, these taPHOTO: SAMANTHA LEE riffs were amended.

The home user charge was first touted by the City some years ago.

Customers were communicated with. When the charge was due for implementation, it was postponed due to public inputs. The City decided to give customers more preparation time to prepare for the implementation of this charge. The fact is the City cannot subsidise the cost of providing electricity further.

Whether usage goes up or down, it costs the same to provide the service. Income helps the City to continue to provide a quality service to all our customers by investing in infrastructure, operations, maintenance, and service levels. Also, note that there was a reduction in the tariff per kWh for the home user category which means that one can still limit costs by reducing usage.

V On Monday 2 August, Nersa requested a mediation meeting between Stop COCT and the City about complaints esculated by City customers on electricity tariffs and levies implemented by the City. The meeting will take place in Cape Town on 10 August.

Two rape convictions in K’fontein Kraaifontein police are pleased with the sentencing of two men who were handed heavy sentences by the Blue Downs regional court for rape on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 August.

Luwando Wagraya (27) was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the rape of a 20year-old woman in May 2011.

According to spokesperson Capt Hein Hendricks, the woman was walking with a friend at 21:00 in Maroela Street in Wallacedene when three men approached them and attempted to rob them.

“They forced the victim into the nearby bushes while her friend managed to got away unharmed. The victim was raped by all three men,” Hendricks said.

He said the men were later traced and arrested before making their first court appearance in July that year where they were denied bail, but later released after bail was granted. “The three suspects failed to appear before court at their next appearance and warrants of arrests were issued.”

Hendricks said Wagraya was rearrested in 2017 and stayed under police custody until he was sentenced on Monday 26 August.

He further said that one of the three original suspects has since passed away and the other was still on the run. He pleaded with members of the public to contact the police if they knew of his whereabouts.

In a separate incident, 24-year-old man was handed a 23-year imprisonment sentence after raping a 15-year-old girl at her home in Bloekombos during a break-in on 23 November 2017. During the episode, Hendricks said that the man threatened the girl with a knife before raping her. “The suspect was arrested and appeared at the Blue Downs regional court on 29 November 2017.”

Ek het simpatie met alles waarmee skeidsregters by klubwedstryde te doen het, want jy word uitgejou deur “kenners” op en langs die pawiljoene. Dis nie net die spelers wat hulle hieraan skuldig maak nie, maar ook die klub se ondersteuners.

Ek is bly dat die skeidsregters nou gesê het tot hiertoe en nie verder nie, maar my Saterdag was bederf.

Vir rugbyklubs in die Superligakompetisies van die WP was Saterdag ’n baie belangrike rugbydag, want die kwalifiseerders vir die topses sou deur die naweek se uitslae bepaal word.

Alles hang nou in die lug, want die wedstryde is nie gespeel nie en teen druktyd was dit nog nie bekend wanneer die wedstryde gespeel gaan word nie.

Baie mense mor omdat die skeidsregters tot nou toe gewag het om hul griewe te lug – amper hier teen die einde van die klubrugbyseisoen.

Die gesegde lui: liewer laat as nooit, en indien die staking aan die einde van die seisoen gebeur het, sou dit nie dieselfde uitwerking op almal gehad het nie.

Sedert Saterdag het ek baie tyd gehad om na te dink oor wat skeidsregters alles opoffer om hul Saterdae op die rugbyveld deur te bring. Dis sy tyd – tyd weg van sy gesin, sy petrol wat hy uitry na die verskillende rugbyvelde, en dan moet hy vir sy veiligheid op die veld vrees.

As ’n liefhebber van rugby en ook afrigter by ’n klub, weet ons nie waardeur die skeidsregters moet gaan om ons wedstryde te hanteer nie.

Die minste wat ons as Jan Publiek kan doen, is om skeidsregters met dieselfde respek te behandel as wat jy van hom verwag. Sonder skeidsregters word wedstrydbepalings nie afgehandel nie en almal in die WP het dit nou gevoel.

In sommige huishoudings is dit juis die wegwedstryde wat gebruik word om dit saam as ’n familie deur te bring en nie om deur onderonsies tussen toeskouers, spelers en die skeidsregter gekonfronteer te word nie.

Hopelik het alle rugbyliefhebbers nou ’n dure les geleer en sal ons meer gedissiplineerd op ons sportvelde optree.

Verteenwoordigers van klubs het Maandagaand die vergadering by die Sportinstituut by Nuweland bygewoon, waar die griewe van die skeidsregters bespreek is. Voorstelle is van die vloer gevra oor die pad vorentoe om ’n herhaling van die afgelope Saterdag te vermy. ’n Ultimatum is aan klubs gestel dat hulle voor Dinsdag 3 September om 14:00 ’n dokument moes onderteken waarin hulle onderneem om te verseker dat skeidsregters veilig sal wees by hul klubwedstryde. Indien die veiligheid van die skeidsregters nie gewaarborg word deur klubs nie, gaan die klub in die 2020-seisoen geen skeidsregters vir hul wedstryde hê nie.

In die verlede is daar telkens ’n beroep gedoen op klubs om juniors, seniors en vroue beskikbaar te stel om hulle as skeidsregters te bekwaam.

Hopelik het die staking van die skeidsregters nou weer hierdie kanaal oopgemaak.

Ricardo is our Electricity – it’s guardian angel actually a big joke My wife and I are senior citizens. We were driving home from visiting family in Fish Hoek on the Koeberg Interchange just before joining the N1 when I noticed that my car was over-heating and steam was coming through the bonnet of the car.

I stopped immediately on the side of the road with hundreds of cars streaming by as it was peak hour traffic.

I got out of the car to view the damage that I thought had occurred. Before I reached the bonnet to open it a guardian angel was approaching me with a bottle of water in his hand.

He literally came out of nowhere as I did not see him stop his car. He immediately assessed the problem and explained exactly what remedial action needed to be taken.

He calmed us down especially my dear wife, who like most wives tend to panic quite quickly. He sorted the problem out and we were on our way home. This guardian angel insisted on following us home to ensure that we arrived there safely. He refused any form of compensation whatsoever. His name is Ricardo and he is involved with the Summer Greens neighbourhood watch.

Ricardo, we want to express our deepest appreciation to you. You make the doom and gloom we all see daily in the news go away and make us aware that most of us, whatever our background is, are good human beings.

It’s about time that this matter is brought to light.

My point is that this levy they charge for maintenance of electricity infrastructure is exorbitant and putting a lot of pressure on an already heavily financially burdened public. They don’t maintain electricity infrastructure!

Stad skuld ons ’n verduideliking In reaksie op die artikel “No formal investigation, says City,” (TygerBurger, 28 Augustus) ontstaan die vraag oor hoekom die Stad so sterk kapsie maak teen ’n ondersoek aangaande sy tariewe en tariefstruktuur.

Indien die Stad se tariewe met die Nersa-tariewe klop, behoort die Stad so ’n ondersoek toe te laat en aan te moedig, om hul bewerings te bewys.

Ongelukkig doen die Stad nou alles in sy vermoë om Stop COCT, wat die klagte by Nersa gelê het, te diskrediteer. E-posse wat aan die Stad gestuur word, word nie beantwoord nie en die kwessie word as “vals nuus” deur

die burgemeester, Dan Plato, afgemaak.

Gedurende die begrotingstydperk het die Stad wel om openbare deelname gevra.

Die publiek het meer as 4 000 e-posse aan die Stad gestuur, waarin sterk kapsie teen die heffing van R162,50 per maand op elektrisiteit gemaak is. Die Stad het hierdie en ander besware ignoreer en voortgegaan om inderdaad die elektrisiteitsheffing te behou en te verhoog.

Die goedgekeurde tariewe is op die Nersa-webtuiste vir almal om te sien. Tog beweer die Stad sy elektrisiteitstariewe verskil nie van Nersa s’n nie. Ek noop die Stad Kaapstad om sonder verwyl hierdie kwessie aan te spreek.

Met elke besoek word ’n nuwe lys voorsien van verdere dokumentasie wat verlang word, hoofsaaklik oor klein bedraggies, soos byvoorbeeld die terugskryf van bankkoste, soos blyk uit herhaalde besoeke aan jou bank. Die aandrang op bykomende bewyse en die fokus op beuselagtighede is tydens die besoeke verduidelik as vereistes wat die bestuur stel. Dit is so rigied dat dit die perke van redelike bewys van inkomste geheel oorskry. Verder is ’n mens uitgelewer aan ’n situasie waar daar by ’n toonbank deur ’n glas gekommunikeer moet word ten aanhore van almal wat op hul beurt wag.

Dit mag moontlik nie die bedoeling wees nie, maar dit toon geen respek vir die vertroulikheid van inligting nie. Tydens die wag op jou beurt het dit ook vir my duidelik geraak dat van die ander reeds by herhaling daar was. Ek wag ook op die uitslag op my appèl oor die buitensporige 2018-waardasie van my huis. Dit kan volgens korrespondensie nog 18 maande neem.

Container homes save you money and time Shipping containers offer an interesting alternative to traditional construction techniques.

As economic pressures increase, and affordability continues to limit access to property, millions of South African families are without a reliable place to call home. At the same time, millions of shipping containers are sitting idle and empty, begging the question: could the burgeoning trend of container living solve both problems at the same time?

“Shipping containers certainly offer an interesting alternative to traditional construction techniques, particularly when it comes to affordable living,” says Tony Clarke, managing director of the Rawson Property Group. “We’ve already seen some very forward-thinking container solutions going up ... and I think the opportunity is there to leverage this type of construction for a number of other applications.”

Another benefit of container properties is their compatibility with off-grid solutions like solar power, solar lighting and rainwater-harvesting systems. Clarke says this ability to function without municipal connections makes them an ideal solution for desperately needed rural facilities like clinics and schools.

“Building anywhere outside of the normal reach of municipal infrastructure can be very difficult and costly, not only because basic services would need to be installed, but also because transport for construction crews and equipment gets very expensive,” says Clarke. “The mobile nature of a container, and the fact that it can largely be built offsite, makes it a very smart solution for this type of structure.”

With the typical cost of a container home being about a quarter of an equivalent brick and mortar property, shipping containers could also offer a very affordable alternative

for RDP housing projects. However, the cost is far from the only benefit of using container homes for low-cost housing.

“Shipping container homes are not just affordable, they’re also dramatically faster to construct, and can normally be built to 90% completion in an offsite factory,” says Clarke. “That means more homes can be built for the same amount of money, in a shorter period of time, and can be delivered to site virtually complete, minimising the risk for potential vandalism.”

Container homes can also be sturdier than cheap brick and mortar construction and (with the right cladding and basic maintenance) can be just as comfortable, stylish and long-lasting as their traditional counterparts.

Shipping containers aren’t just affordable housing alternatives for the needy. Clarke says high-end container homes have also become popular among eco-friendly homeown-

ers looking for a more compact lifestyle.

“More and more people, particularly in younger generations, are moving away from the traditional three-bedroom, two-bathroom family home in favour of a smaller space housing just the essentials,” says Clarke. “Container homes are perfect for this kind of lifestyle, being affordable, compact, eco-friendly and relatively easy to expand down the line. They’re a great option for younger buyers looking to get a foot in the market, or older buyers wanting to downscale.”

With their flexibility and unique design aesthetic, shipping containers have also become popular as retail, café and restaurant facilities. According to Clarke, this type of application isn’t limited to trendy malls in hipster areas. “Containers are a great way to introduce marketplaces and social hubs within informal communities, providing safe spaces for small business owners”.

Bellville se Leeus hou bekeruitdeling D

ie Bellville-Leeus setoutrekspan het sy eerste prysuitdeling in samewerking met die Metro-Noord-onderwysdistrik in Parow gehou.

Verskeie trofees en medaljes is aan atlete toegeken.

Die individuele trofees en medaljes is deur David en Chantel Leonard geskenk.

Die geleentheid is ook deur Carel Moller, president van die Suid-Afrikaanse Junior Toutrekunie bygewoon en hy het die meeste trofees oorhandig.

Die atlete wat toekennings in hul onderskeie afdelings ontvang het, is: Chrismari Sparks (stewelafdeling) en Deon Volgraaff (kaalvoetafdeling): beste trekker en toegewydste bywoning; Kaythan Napier (stewelafdeling vir seuns), Shineen Potgieter (stewelafdeling vir meisies) en Storme Williams (kaalvoetafdeling), trekkers wat die meeste vordering getoon het; Ashleigh Gombard (stewelafdeling) en Marize Pansegrouw (kaalvoetafdeling), is as die beste opkomende nuwe trekkers aangewys; Leona Hoon is as die beste waterdraer aangewys; Michaela Williams is as die leier van die jaar aangewys. Kaylee van Renen het die wisseltrofee vir die beste anker ontvang. Dis geskenk deur Desire Els.

Die junior span in die kaalvoetafdeling het die wisseltrofee van Johan van Zyl ontvang, terwyl die 320 kg-A-span die kaalvoetplaatafdeling gewen het.

Wilhelmien Stegemann was die aanvoerder van die span.

Die stewelafdeling is as die span van die jaar aangewys. Die trofee, geskenk deur Thinus Els, is deur Carel Moller oorhandig.

Die 520 kg-A-meisiespan is ook vereer. Els was die aanvoerder van dié span.

Charét Potgieter is as die junior sportvrou van die jaar in die kaalvoetafdeling aangewys.

Dié trofee is deur Tracey Williams geskenk.

Lourens Watney is as die junior sportman van die jaar in die kaalvoetafdeling aangewys. Hy het die wisseltrofee van Tewis (Oom Papies) van Papendorp ontvang.

Ellené Els is as die sportvrou van die jaar in die stewelafdeling gekroon. Dié wisseltrofee is geskenk en oorhandig deur Els. Sheldon van Greunen is as die sportman van die jaar in die stewelafdeling gekroon. Hy het die wisseltrofee van Ray Williams, skenker, ontvang.

Wilhelmien Stegeman het die beker as die beste aanvoerder ontvang. Dit is ook deur Williams oorhandig.

Die 520 kg-meisiespan is as die span van die jaar aangewys en het almal WP-kleure by die WP/Wynlandkampioenskap verwerf. Hulle is (van links) Elandia van Renen, Ianca van Greunen, Ellené Els, Clarize Griessel, Thinus Els (afrigter), Mijanke Swart, Kaylee van Renen, Lisa-Mari Volgraaff, Michaela Williams en Carel Moller (president van SAJTU). Clarissa Nel was afwesig toe die foto geneem is.

Die 320 kg-A-span is as die junior span van die jaar aangewys. Hier is (van links) Johan van Zyl (SATJU-skeidsregter en skenker van die wisseltrofee), Nicole Stegemann, Kayla Stegemann, Charét Potgieter, Wilhelmien Stegemann (aanvoerder van die span), Eric Louw, Iwan de Jager, Kean Botha, Deon Volgraaff en Lourens Watney. WPRU: KRISISVERGADERING GEHOU

D

ie WP-Rugbyunie (WPRU) strompel steeds voort van die een krisis na die ander.

In die jongste episode het ’n sleutelarm van die WPRU, die unie se skeidsregtersvereniging, verlede week geweier om enige fluitjieblasers beskikbaar te stel vir die afgelope naweek se belangrike reeks klubwedstryde – onder meer die laaste sarsie Superligawedstryde.

Dit is waarskynlik die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van klubrugby in die WP dat so iets gebeur.

Skynbaar is die verduideliking vir die skeidsregters se optrede dat die blasers enersyds te veel geteiken word deur misdadige elemente by sommige sportterreine, en dat hulle nie voldoende beskermende ondersteuning van die WPRU ontvang nie.

Andersyds voel die skeidsregters blykbaar dat hulle nie genoegsame geldelike steun van die moeder-

unie kry nie.

Maar inderwaarheid strek die ongelukkigheid onder die skeidsregters (en so ook die algemene publiek) veel verder.

Daar is voortdurende onderlinge struwelinge in die WP se rugby-opset; administratiewe flaters duik van tyd tot tyd op; daar is ’n onnodige sloerdery met die kontraktering van Curriebeker-spelers en die WPRU se finansiële situasie is in ’n erge warboel.

By die skryf hiervan het dit bekend geword dat alle belanghebbendes die afgelope

Maandag 2 September koppe bymekaar sou sit tydens ’n krisisvergadering op Nuweland – om minstens die probleem ter wille van ’n gerusstelling en tevredenheid by die skeidsregters tuis te bring sodat die klubwedstrydprogram weer sy gang kan gaan.

Indien konsensus in hierdie verband nie bereik sou word nie, maar terselfdertyd besluit sou word dat alle onafgehandelde wedstryde steeds moet plaasvind, dan gaan ons vanjaar nog Superliga-klubrugby sien tot vlak in die somermaande.

Sensei George Best from Great Britain who assisted England and Team Great Britain (GB) in winning the European Team Kumite Championship on five occasions, and the World Championship twice will host a seminar in Brackenfell on Tuesday 10 September.

The seminar will be held in the Brackenfell Primary School hall.

United Shotokan-Ryu Karate in South Africa secured his services and the Western Cape seminar will be hosted by Sensei JP Müller in Brackenfell with the venue to be confirmed at a later stage.

“We are very excited to host Sensei Best and for him to share his knowledge and expertise with our students. This is the very first time we will have a sensei of his calibre and international status conducting a seminar.

“We will cover all the basis from basics to advanced and competition fighting (kumite).

We are also opening the doors to students from all forms of karate making it an all styles seminar in kumite,” said Müller.

Sensei Best is renowned for his kicking techniques, as well as for his speed and power.

His distancing, timing and body movement are phenomenal, making him one of the greatest karate exponents Team GB has ever produced.

White to orange belts is scheduled from 17:30 to 18:30 with green to black belts from 18:45 to 20:15.

Marlon, die spiertier: Marlon Isaacs van BellvilleSuid is die algehele wenner in die o.21 junior-afdeling van die Mr Northern Suburbs-liggaamsboukompetisie. Dit is onlangs in Bishop Lavis gehou. Hy het ook ‘n tweede plek in die “physique”-afdeling behaal.

Die Tygerbergse spanne het maar aan die kortste ent getrek met die sewesrugbytoernooie vir juniors die afgelope naweek, met Paarlse skole wat met die louere by al drie saamtrekke weggestap het.

By die Hoërskool Brackenfell se Netwerk Makelaars/Cheslin Kolbe-toernooi vir o.16spanne het Stellenberg darem byna verras.

Die Stellies is eers in die eindstryd naelskraap deur Paarl Gimnasium koudgesit.

HS Durbanville het vierde geëindig.

By HS Monumentpark se toernooi vir o.15spanne is Stellenberg in die halfeindronde (deur HJS Paarl) uitgeskakel, terwyl Brackenfell, Durbanville en HTS Bellville ook nog tot in die kwarteindronde stem dikgemaak het.

Stellenberg het ook die halfeindronde gehaal in HS Durbanville se Peter Buttner Sport-saamtrek vir o.14-spanne voordat hy deur Paarl Gim (die uiteindelike kampioen) die trekpas gegee is.

Durbanville, HTS Bellville en Scottsdene het darem ook tot in die kwarteindronde gevorder.

In die laaste skole-sewestoernooi hierdie seisoen sal die volgende skole se o.17- en o.15spanne die komende Vrydag en Saterdag in die Paarl in aksie wees: Stellenberg, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Milnerton, HS Tygerberg en Edgemead.

Flower Power at Killarney Killarney International Raceway celebrates the coming of spring with the Flower Power event sponsored by Wingfield Motors on Saturday 7 September, the seventh of nine rounds on this year’s Power Series calendar.

Along with the warmer weather, the temperature in the pits will be rising as the regional championships in the various categories heat up.

With only two rounds left after this one, this is where titles can be won and lost in one decisive weekend, in the Mikes Place Clubmans Saloons, Millstock Classic and Shatterfix Fine Cars, Burly Pro GTi Challenge, Pirelli Sports and GT Cars, Makita Supercars and Formula Libre Single-seaters.

You can also be a part of the excitement in the pits paddock, which is open to the public all day, and on the famous “fan walk”, when spectators are invited down

onto the circuit during the lunch break to meet the competitors in one of the categories and get some unforgettable selfies.

Visit the Trackside pub and grill upstairs at the clubhouse for ice-cold drinks and fine food, including their signature cheeseburger or refuel with takeaways and even colder drinks from the New Pits Lounge and the Karting clubhouse.

There are pedal karts, pushbikes, jungle gyms and more for petrolheads-intraining at the clubhouse kiddies korner and below the New Pits Lounge.
