KLEINVLEI: OVERALL DECREASE IN CRIME
LEBOGANG TLOU
Helen (Van Rooi) is die ma van Damon (Hartzenberg) en Donna (Rockman). rime statistics released by police minister Bheki Cele on Thursday 12 September reveal a general decrease in reported crimes at Kleinvlei police station. The Kleinvlei police station also oversees the Eerste River community. With a 4.5% decrease in theft, Kleinvlei police station is ranked 23rd in the top 30 stations listed as having a decrease in this crime. According to the statistical findings, there have been decreases in reported sexual offences, aggravated robberies, property and other serious crimes during the present financial year. Kleinvlei police station showed a 17.1% increase in police detected crimes from the previous year. The station reports a 299 case increase in crimes detected by police action. Although no sexual offences were detected by the station an increase in cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as drug-related crimes, indicates effective police intervention. These increases were 10.2% and 19.6% respectively. In contrast, only 133 cases of driving under the influence (in comparison to the previous figure of 144) were detected by police patrols. Cape Town mayor Dan Plato,
says there is a complete breakdown in the criminal justice system – from policing to prosecutions. “For 10 years we have seen the crime rate go up year after year for some of the most serious categories – murder, hijacking and home invasions. These are some of the crimes that residents fear most and they continue to increase with no end in sight. “Police officers on the ground are doing their best in very difficult circumstances, but they are hamstrung by management failures and their lives are put at risk,” he says. The City has put measures in place to try and make up for the police resource shortages and management failures, but the more money we spend on law enforcement, which is the primary function of the police, the less we have to spend on other services for our residents.” He says, an additional R165 million has been made available during the adjustment budget in January this year, to respond to residents’ calls for increased safety. “This is the biggest budget allocated to the safety and security directorate in 10 years. This is not enough though, and we need police management to function properly. It is time for president Ramaphosa to intervene and put our residents’ interests first.”
