Arrests for drugs, guns Several suspects were arrested for the possession of drugs and illegal firearms in the Delft policing precinct. According to Capt John Bartlett, police spokesperson, on Monday 8 February at approximately 22:30 officers arrested a 35year-old suspect of Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East, when he was found in possession of a firearm without a license and in illegal possession of ammunition. The suspect was arrested at a house in Steelpoort Street, Leiden and a silver Taurus PT92CZ pistol with a brown wooden grip and one magazine containing two rounds of ammunition was confiscated. The serial number of the said firearm was filed off,” says Bartlett. In a separate incident on the same day at approximately 21:50 officers arrested a 27-year-old suspect in Mohawk Street, The Hague, for possession of a firearm without a license after he was found with a black

CZ75 pistol with one magazine and seven rounds of ammunition. “The serial number of the said firearm was also filed off.” In yet another unrelated incident, officers arrested a 28-year-old suspect from Delft South for dealing in drugs after he was found in possession of an unknown amount of tik and an undisclosed amount of cash in Pietersielie Street, Delft South. It is suspected that the cash was utilized in the commission of the crime. On the same day at 19:15 officers from public order policing, Faure, arrested a 45-year-old male suspect of Leiden for dealing in drugs. The suspect was found in possession of 30 parcels of dagga and 31 sticks of dagga at a house in Shangani Street, Leiden. At 19:35 officers arrested a 42-year-old male suspect for dealing in drugs after he was found in possession of 100 parcels of dagga in a house in Horse Sugar Court, Leiden,” says Bartlett.

New homes for 43, ‘This is dignity’ W

estern Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertius Simmers, says with 43 deserving and qualifying beneficiaries moving into their brand new homes in the Forest Village Housing Development in Eerste River on Thursday, 4 and Tuesday 9 February 2021, the Western Cape government is once again demonstrating that it is wholly committed to improving the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. “Over these two days, all those who benefitted from this project are from neighbouring communities. “To date, a total of 2 537 units have already been handed over. This comprises of 579 for N2 Gateway beneficiaries, 474 from the Southern Corridor, 144 Priority Cases and 1 340 locals, which includes Eerste River, Eerste River South, Electric City, Faure, Dreamworld, Blue Downs, Malibu

Village, Kleinvlei, Rosedale, Mfuleni and Fairdale. “Our entire focus as government is to make a life changing difference in the lives of our people who require it most. This is why we’re particularly focused on assisting the elderly, persons with disabilities, those that have been on the housing demand database for 15 years and longer as well as our backyard dwellers. “By assisting our people in this manner, we’re ensuring that they have a dignified roof over their heads, a safe place they can call their own home and in addition to this we’re also ensuring true integration, as people from different backgrounds, cultures and languages are being brought together to form a brand new community,” says Simmers. Sharon Burger from Eerste River was overjoyed upon receiving her home.

“This is unbelievable. I am grateful. Living in people’s backyard is not nice at all and having been on the waiting list for 19 years it feels unreal to be standing in my own home. This is dignity. I can only say thank you from the bottom of my heart,” says Burger. Simmers urged beneficiaries to value the asset which they receive and take care of it. “We encourage citizens to draft a will, so that they leave a legacy for their children. They should also not consider renting or selling the property, as doing so would suggest that they never had a housing need to start with. “It is important to note that should a beneficiary wish to sell the property within the first eight years after receiving the property, compelling reasons for the sale would be required, permission from the state is needed, while government should be given the first opportunity,” says Simmers.

Beneficiaries Sharon Burger (right) and Alec George received their new houses.

Window for ECD sector relief closes, final calls to apply Early childhood development (ECD) operators, owners or managers have three more days to apply on behalf of their ECD workers for the government’s Early Childhood Development Employment Stimulus Relief Fund. Application to the fund, which opened just over a week ago, will close at 23:59 on Friday 19 February. The national social development department received R496 million from national treasury as part of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s Covid-19 relief measures to assist ECD programmes and services im-

pacted by the pandemic. Of this amount, R53 million has been earmarked to support ECD programmes and services in the Western Cape. Application to the fund does come with certain restrictions. Individual ECD workers cannot apply to the fund themselves. ECD operators, owners or managers must apply on behalf of their ECD service, and if successful, they will pay the ECD employees. Successful applicants may only use the funds to subsidise the cost of employment for workers and this financial support will be limited to a maximum value of R4 470

per staff member. The types of ECD programmes which can apply include ECD centres, playgroups, mobile ECD programmes, childminders and toy libraries. The DSD stated the support will vary according to the type of ECD service. A maximum of four staff members per ECD centre will be supported and a maximum of one staff member will be supported at non centre-based ECD programmes. Applicants must have the following in place: . All ECD services making an application will need to have a bank account in the name

of the ECD service. . ECD services that do not receive funding from provincial department will need to be registered on the central supplier database (CSD) (www.secure.csd.gov.za/Account/Register). . The registration number generated from the CSD database will be required for the stimulus application. V Applicants must use the govchat.app portal to apply. For assistance with the application, call 0800 089 666. For more information about the qualifying criteria, visit www.dsd.gov.za.

Killer gets 45 years jail time A

nother killer off the streets. These are the comforting words from Const Timothy Harris, of the serious and violent crimes unit at Mfuleni police station, following the sentencing of a 42-year-old triple murder suspect from Happy Valley to 45 years imprisonment in the Blue Downs magistrate’s court on Tuesday 9 February. According to WO November Filander, police spokesperson, in the early hours of Sunday 5 May 2019, the 40-year-old Mozambican male, Justino Canhavano, went to a shack in Harts Street, Happy Valley, looking for his girlfriend. “After confronting her for drinking alcohol with other people while leaving their child alone at home, an argument ensued between the victim and the suspect, who forced him out of the shack. The suspect left but later returned and set the shack on fire with the victims still inside it. “The shack was burned to the ground, killing all three victims, including the

suspect’s 27-year-old girlfriend. The community assaulted the suspect, and police were notified and arrested him. Later during the investigation, a confession was obtained from the suspect,” says Filander. The suspect appeared in the Blue Downs magistrate’s court on Thursday, 9 May 2019 and the case was postponed till 25 June 2019 for a bail application. “His bail application was denied, and the case was transferred to the Blue Downs regional court. “Two years later, on Tuesday 9 February 2021, the 42-year-old Justino Canhavano was found guilty for the triple murder of 22-year-old Sikelela Mihle from Happy Valley, 27-year-old Nomveliso Sithole from Happy Valley and a man who at this stage is only known as Daniel,” says Filander. Station commander of Mfuleni police, Brig Fana Dlamini, applauded Harris for his hard work to bring about the suspect’s conviction.

Mfuleni woman still missing, help needed The Mfuleni police are appealing for assistance in locating a missing mentally disturbed woman, 20-year-old Kefuwe Nkonyana from Msunduzi Street, extension 6 in Mfuleni. According to WO November Filander, police spokesperson, Nkonyana went missing around 11:45 on Friday 29 January, after telling her mother that she’s going to visit her

sister who lives not far from them. “This was the last time her mother saw her and she never arrived at her sister’s house. “She was last seen wearing a blue dress with purple flipflops,” says Filander. Filander says they appeal to anyone with information to contact the investigating officer, Const. Yamkela Magadla, on 066 514 6049 or 021 909 9642.

Institute runs clinical trial for Covid vaccine Task, a clinical research institute based in Parow, has begun several medical research projects aimed at finding solutions to Covid-19. One of these research initiatives involves repurposing a 100 year old TB vaccine called Bacille Calmette-Guérin, or BCG for short. BCG vaccination has been in use for many decades to prevent severe forms of tuberculosis in children. Task hopes that running a clinical trial with local community volunteers may show that revaccinating adults with BCG may lessen the severity of the symptoms of the disease. The trial, which started in May 2020, involves 1 000 volunteers. The last participant visit will be in October 2021, with these results being made publicly available

shortly thereafter. “We are pleased that we can play our part in the fight against the pandemic. Task is committed to better health for all and we value our local community in Cape Town as they are instrumental to achieving our goals,” commented Duncan McDonald, head of business development and communication. The organisation is also conducting numerous other intervention and vaccine studies aimed at combating Covid-19. All of these trials are approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and dedicated ethics committees, who in conjunction with Task ensure that the trials are conducted safely and ethically.

Faulty alarms are a threat to security M

any people have become accustomed to that one neighbour’s car alarm that is triggered weekly or even daily – and this desensitisation is the exact problem when it comes to home security. Security and alarm systems are placed in the home to alert homeowners, security agencies and neighbours of possible threats. But when an overactive alarm system leaves everyone feeling desensitised to the sound, which has become commonplace, this is the perfect opportunity for criminals to attack. “The problem with faulty security systems, like an alarm, is that neighbours eventually become desensitised to the sound of it and nobody bothers to go out to investigate the actual cause,” warns Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications for Fidelity ADT. “Meanwhile, many of these scenarios are the work of crafty criminals working on a way of gaining entry to the premises,” Hattingh says. Common things criminals tamper with in-

clude electric fencing and automated gates. They also take advantage of loadshedding, which runs alarm and gate motor batteries down, says Hattingh. It is, therefore, critical to ensure alarm systems are working correctly. The armed response company offers five ways to take action and avoid an overactive security system: . If an alarm is sounding regularly, check if the property is protected by a security company and report it so that they can investigate. According to Hattingh, people often blame security companies, but the truth is homeowners install security systems without linking them

to armed response, so no signal comes through to the control room when these are activated. Security companies cannot respond to activations they are not aware of. . Approach the homeowner and express your concern without accusing them of being inconsiderate and negligent. If they have recently moved in they could still be getting used to the property. New users are in the top five reasons for overactive security systems. . Know the causes of overactive security systems so that you can identify potential causes easily. These can range from insects to loose wiring and battery problems. The

‘Koeberg containment building is safe’ Eskom is fully cognisant of the risk of corrosion of civil structures at the Koeberg Power Station, which is a result of the station being located in a corrosive environment. This Eskom says in a statement as ongoing testing on the Koeberg containment buildings, which house the reactor and associated nuclear components, have proven the structures to be capable of withstanding the most severe accident. This containment programme has been managed closely since construction. “The tests comprise quarterly and annual measurements to identify any abnormal movement (such as expansions, settling, etc.), visual inspections to identify physical deg-

radation (such as cracks, spalling, efflorescence) and by performing the integrated leak rate tests (ILRT) on a 10-yearly basis. The results of the ILRTs have shown conclusively that the design functions of the containment buildings are met. The test results of the ILRT were also compared with international plants of similar design and it was found to be in-line with industry norms. The ILRT represents the worst case accident scenario and proves the containment buildings to be capable of withstanding the most severe accident,” Eskom says. The main concern to the long term system health of the containment buildings is the deterioration of the externally exposed concrete surfaces due to

chloride ingress that causes reinforcement corrosion and the potential effect on the pre-stressing tendons. Concrete repairs have been implemented to reinstate areas of the external facades where spalling and delamination occurred due to reinforcement corrosion. “A long term solution to prevent rebar and tendon corrosion due to chloride ingress is the implementation of an induced cathodic protection system,” Eskom explains. The information from the ongoing testing, inspections and maintenance is included in the assessments being implemented as part of the work required for Koeberg’s life extension. Eskom remains confident that the issue is under control.

associated security company will often be able to detail what could trigger an alarm. . Ensure everyone in the household knows the security protocols and codes and how to summon help in an emergency. . Get proper security systems in place and link these to an armed response service. “There is always an explanation and a way to sort the problem out, so be neighbourly by trying to be part of the solution,” Hattingh says. Most armed response security companies also allow their clients to test their alarm systems to ensure efficacy. Simply call your provider to ask how. “The most secure suburbs rely on neighbours working together to keep criminals out. “This means people who have security systems should ensure they are working 100% all the time and, therefore, a true call for assistance in the event of an activation, not a noise the neighbours turn a blind eye to,” Hattingh concludes.

Free antenatal care available F

rom 13 to 21 February is Pregnancy Education Week and the City of Cape Town’s health department is encouraging women to visit their clinics for antenatal care. “It is important that women attend antenatal care as soon as they find out they are pregnant, preferably before 14 weeks of pregnancy. This helps to ensure the pregnancy and birth is a positive experience,” said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. Antenatal care at public health clinics is free and pregnant women are encouraged to attend all antenatal visits, scheduled every four weeks to 28 weeks of pregnancy, thereafter every two weeks to 36 weeks, then weekly until the delivery. It is important to return to the clinic immediately when experiencing any of the following symptoms: abdominal pain (not discomfort), blurred vision, liquid (amniotic fluid) leaking from the vagina, persistent headache, reduced foetal movements or vaginal bleeding. To ensure a safe pregnancy and healthy baby, it is important to eat healthy meals and to do safe physical activities. Pregnant women should abstain from smoking, using illegal drugs and drinking alcohol.

Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of pre-term labour, low birth weight, and birth defects of the mouth and lip (cleft palate). Smoking during, and after pregnancy also increases the risk of infant death syndrome. The use of illegal drugs during pregnancy increases the risk of pre-term labour, low birth weight, and developmental delays in the child. Drinking alcohol while pregnant can harm the unborn baby, and cause birth defects known as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Disease (FASD). When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol it goes into her bloodstream and to the unborn baby. Alcohol damages the unborn baby’s growing body and brain resulting in many types of birth defects. FASD is permanent. No alcohol for mom during pregnancy means no FASD for baby. If you or someone you know is suffering from depression during pregnancy or after the birth of the baby, speak to the healthcare professional at your clinic or your doctor, or get help from Postnatal Depression Support SA. SMS “help” to 082 882 0072 and they will contact you.

NPO calls for assistance to feed children: The Social Community non-profit organisation is appealing for donations to assist in feeding children in the Bishop Lavis area. Chairperson August Williams said making sure children are fed is a priority for them as many don’t know where or when their next meal will come from. “We currently feed children aged three to 14. Any assistance, in the form of vegetables, will be appreciated. We aim to feed the poorest of the poor. Donations can be dropped off at 55A Lenton Drive.” PHOTO: TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS

Technology used to connect patients with loved ones Due to hospital visitations not being allowed to limit the risk of possible Covid-19 transmission, staff at Karl Bremer Hospital have come up with an innovative idea. Here tablets are now being used to connect patients with their families. Patients can chat to their friends and family by means of a video call. “The tablet has given the patient the opportunity to speak to and see their loved ones without any obstacles and, by doing so, there has been an optimistic response from both sides,” says Denise Barnes, assistant nursing manager. Barnes says technology has greatly improved the way the hospital team communicates, especially during the pandemic. “When taking into account the visiting

policy under the current regulations, not only does it protect the patient, but their loved ones too. The use of tablets within our wards has ensured continuous communication between the patient and their family at home, as being away from home and unable to see your loved ones tends to have a toll on the overall recovery of a patient, which ultimately leads to a negative bed flow within our busy units,” Barnes says. She says the use of tablets has given patients and staff a sense of hope as they continue to fight Covid-19. “It has definitely been a rewarding feeling to see how thankful our patients and their relatives are, and we remain hopeful that the circumstances we are living in will change in the near future,” Barnes says.

Helping entrepreneurs Is Covid-19 home to find their ‘why’ testing a better option? The age old question of “knowing your why” was the title of the latest virtually held entrepreneurs workshop that saw business owners from throughout South Africa zooming in to listen to and field questions to the panel. Margaret Hirsch, Hirsch’s executive director, and Marlene Powell, a top business coach with ActionCOACH, created a discussion with guest speaker Harry Welby-Cooke, the master franchisor of ActionCOACH South Africa. Their virtual audience was left in no doubt that they could get through this difficult period in our history, and thrive. Welby-Cooke started the session off by congratulating Hirsch and Powell for the time hosting the virtual workshops every week since the start of the pandemic – and before that, once a month. “It’s people like Margaret and Marlene who are selflessly helping entrepreneurs to overcome challenges in their businesses who will ultimately help change the face of business in the country,” Welby-Cooke said. He pointed out that every course of action that we take and action we set starts with a decision. “When you go back to finding your why, it needs to be personal to you. What gets you up in the morning? What do you love doing? Where do you want to make a dent in the universe? The most successful companies in the world have made their why about their customers and their employees. About finding out more about their customers and what they need. About making employees feel special and cared for. About taking the priority away from self and making it about the other person.” Powell pointed out that our feelings often determine our business’s strength. “Whatever we are feeling is going to have a direct impact on our business. It is so important to feel motivated and to get up every morning knowing why we are in business and how the success of our business will impact our personal lives and the lives of the

Guest speaker Harry Welby-Cooke, the master franchisor of ActionCOACH South Africa. people around us. You need to know what your ultimate vision is for the business,” she said. Hirsch concluded by adding that you need to find out exactly what is important to you. If you don’t feel the emotion, then perhaps it’s not for you. “Do what you love and the rest will flow. Be mindful of why you do what you do. Money doesn’t last, passion does. Do not chase money, attract money.”

If you ever had to wait anxiously in a long queue inside a triage centre with other people who were also fearful of having contracted the virus, you may see the benefit of a home-testing kit for Covid-19. Created by Zinacare, a company formerly specialising in testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the Covid-19 home-testing kit is now available to the public by online order for R1 099. It was not confirmed at the time of print whether the test is covered by medical aids. Founder and head of product from Zinacare, Philip Mngadi, says the Covid-19 home-testing kit will have a range of benefits, and most importantly, will ease the pressure on medical workers. In a statement from the company, the kit is promised to ensure faster and more convenient access to test results for patients. The kit is said to be a more flexible and accessible alternative to local testing stations. “These at-home kits promise a full laboratory analysis and secure online results, typically within 24 to 72 hours after lab receipt,” reads the statement. Mngadi tells TygerBurger the process is as easy as one, two, three. “Test kits are ordered online, delivered and picked up by UPS (a global shipping and logistics company) and results are emailed to you.” But could it be so simple? As testing does not require the sampling of blood, technically, it can be administered by the patient or a family member. This, however, raises the question of ethics. In response, Mngadi says, “We will manage the ethics of home testing with the way we communicate results to patients. If a patient’s test was supervised by a medical professional, he or she will

get the results telephonically and the physical copy of the results report by email, in case a patient needs results for travel or work.” He adds, “In the event that a patient’s test was not supervised, the results will only be communicated telephonically by our trained care team.” The laboratory’s care team of nurses and doctors are tasked to communicate the results to the patient. A patient testing positive for the coronavirus is then advised to contact the 24-hour coronavirus hotline for the next steps or to send “Hi” on WhatsApp to the dedicated helpline. Zinacare intends that this will reduce the pressure on healthcare workers to do testing. It will also allow patients with mild cases to self-isolate at home until the virus is out of their system. What home testing will not be able to do is reduce the number of people showing severe symptoms or those in need of hospitalisation and oxygenation. Fortunately, the number of infections has decreased in the past few weeks since the passing of the second wave’s peak. In a media statement released recently, the City’s Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, said, “We are cautiously optimistic about the downward trend overall as it’s indicative of continued compliance to health protocols. “While this is good news, we want to encourage residents to continue being vigilant and exercising Covid-19 protocols. This will be the status quo for a while still as we cannot discount the possibility of a third wave.” V Contact the 24-hour coronavirus hotline on 0800 029 999 or send “Hi” on WhatsApp to the dedicated helpline on 0600 123 456. SLICE OF LIFE

Min het ek toe geweet ek sal my vandag binne-in daardie debat bevind. Feit is, katte jag. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! Want so ’n foto wil ek nooit weer kry of sien nie. Dalk KWV. – Werner van Tonder

Thanks for the memories, Newlands

felt at home. Farewell Newlands, thank you for everything. NIKITA SCHRONEN e-mail

“The sweetest part of leaving home is knowing that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, you’ll always carry it with you.” A day I was dreading the most has come. On Saturday 23 January the last game of rugby was played at Newlands. It wasn’t the best game from the home team, but the past 133 years have been nothing short of magical. From seeing the likes of Corné Krige and Morne du Plessis run out to seeing the young guns of Jean-Luc du Plessis and Chris van Zyl running out of the oldest stadium in South Africa Newlands had it all. It had tears, it had laughter, it had lots of stressful moments, but most importantly, it was the home of many memories. It was the place where Chester Williams would break through the opposition defence on his way to the try line. It was the place where Schalk Burger could not wait to go into “Hulk mode” and tackle everybody in his way. It was the place where I watched my very first rugby game. How do you say goodbye to a place that’s like home? Newlands, thank you for being the best home anyone could have ever asked for. You gave me memories that I’ll carry in my heart forever - from my first time as a fan, when the flag was bigger than me, to my last time sitting in the stands when I attended the funeral of Chester Williams. They say home is not a place, it is a feeling. Every time I visited you, I

Graag lug ek ook my opinie oor hierdie interessante onderwerp.

M. SUMMERS E-pos

Brackenfeller wil forum stig As Brackenfeller is ek besorg oor ons as gemeenskap. MARIANA VAN WYK Parow

Scintillating start to season The 2021 Western Cape Rotax Max Challenge karting season exploded to life on a typically searing Cape February day thankfully punctuated by an occasional breeze at Killarney on Saturday 13 February. The action was just as hot on track in a day of contrasts that saw both a bit of domination as well as some cracking fights for glory through the afternoon. Senior Max was surely the race of the day as Andrew Rackstraw took the overall win without winning a heat. In a dramatic afternoon, pole man and South African champion Tate Bishop exited the first race early, leaving Jason Coetzee to storm to the win from Rackstraw and Kyle Visser. Bishop then took advantage of a fraught five-way fight ahead of him to move up from the back and pounce for the lead and make off for the second race win over Kyle Visser, while Rackstraw and Storm Lanfear pulled a last lap move on Charl Visser for third and fourth. Bishop then took care of early leaders Rackstraw and Coetzee to make off for another heat win in the final, but Charl Visser’s day went from bad to worse when he exited after coming from behind to second to release Rackstraw, Kyle Visser and Lanfear after Coetzee was stripped of third for his part in Visser’s demise. That meant that Rackstraw took the day from Kyle Visser, Lanfear, the troubled Charl Visser and Coetzee. It was a different matter in DD2, where Joseph Oelz came, saw and conquered on his DD2 debut for his return to karting following a year away. Joseph put it on pole position and steamed away to a trio of race wins, with a fastest lap each time over reigning South African champion Sebastian Boyd. Behind them, Masters winner Conor Hughes kept the battling Jared Jordan, Andrew Thomas and Michael Jordan at bay for third overall, ahead of a splendid dice between Steve Beaumont, newcomer Rafe Tayler, Andre Steenkamp and rookie Gil Simoes.

It was a case of more domination when WP Mini champion Reza Levy put a season of quietly learning the bigger class to great use as he troubled the Senior frontrunners en route to a compelling high school Junior Max win. The constantly improving Matthew Wadeley however left Killarney with a new Junior Max lap record as he made Levy work for his final win. Wadeley also held Ethan Stier off for second overall with two heat seconds to Stier’s one with Jaden Jacobs fourth from Joshua Smit and Joaquin de Oliveira, both of whom later concentrated on their Mini Max afternoons. De Oliveira had a brilliant day in senior primary Mini Max as he made off up front to deliver a clean sweep with three fastest laps too. He left his rivals to fight it out among themselves as the top five each had a turn on the podium through the day in a great start to the Mini Max season. Out of town visitor Erich Heystek improved through the day to deliver a fine come from behind third in heat 2, before going one better to take second for the day by a point from Joshua Smit and another ever-improving local Jordon Wadeley, Keagen Beaumont, Jude Stuart, Ethan Deacon and Oliver Roach. While those three races saw domination, junior primary Micro Max was on the other hand once

again most entertaining. Kegan Martin overcame Dale Hobbs to win the first race but hit trouble in race 2, before bouncing back to pass Hobbs early and drive off to the final heat win. That was not enough to stoop Hobbs from taking the day from Martin, while Aiden Beaumont overcame a tight battle through the day to beat Eric Norman to third. They came home ahead of a most entertaining day long wrought between Matthew Roach, Matthew Chiwara and Siyabonga Ntuli for fifth. Michael Danks meanwhile laid early claim to the 2021 WP baby Bambino title with yet another dominant pole, triple race wins and a triple fastest lap run en route to the win for the day. Impressive Jozi rookie visitor Kayde Cornofsky diced all the way with Siyabonga Ntuli on their way to second and third. And John Norman pinched a podium third in the final heat en route to fourth from Ruan Lewis and Liam Wharton. The opening round of the Northern Regions Rotax Max Challenge is next up at the Formula K Raceway on 6 March, before the second round of the KZN regionals at iDube on 14 March. Then follows the first 2021 Rotax Max National back at Killarney on 26 March 2021. All races remain scheduled to continue without spectators under lockdown regulations.

rugby player from Eerste River has just received a huge boost on her journey to becoming a professional player when she was chosen for the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute. Lucretia Louw, a 24-year-old local from Keerom Street in Kleinvlei, Eerste River, received the news of a lifetime when she opened her emails. There were only 32 spots available at the prestigious institute and she was chosen as one. Louw says she couldn’t be happier. “Firstly I am immensely thankful that I was chosen to join this group. I am actually over the moon. My dream is to work hard so that I can play professional rugby. If I reach my goal I would like to inspire women on and off the rugby field,” says Louw. According to Louw she would encourage young girls to play rugby. “Rugby is not just a sport, it is love and passion and it brings something out in you that you didn’t even know existed,” says Louw. Louw started playing rugby in 2018 when the Eerste River Rugby Club was established and according to club coach, Alexandrie Joseph, she performed well. “We live in an area marred by social imbalance, lacking enough mentors, role models and positive reinforcement, leaving young girls falling prey to all forms of abuse, eventually succumbing to a sense of hopelessness. The Eerste River Rugby Women’s team became an offering of safety with the possibility for dreams to take on a substance of its own. Lucretia,

together with five or 10 other girls, kicked-off the team with little to no experience. Now standing at 22 team members they managed to endure the grueling training sessions as well as survive the 20 plus matches against more established rivals such as Maties, Macassar, Kuils River, CPUT and Dolphins, to name but a few. Wins were few yet very sweet. It however always served as a learning curve to the novice players. Driven by a determination born from dire circumstances, with the help of the coaches the girls never gave up and continued to practise on their own even through lockdown. “Lucretia stood out from the beginning and rapidly raked in those sought-after titles of team captain, Sportswoman of the Year, as well as the players nomination for Player of the Year awards. Her dedication spanned even through lockdown when she continued practising and motivating others within the team. This beautiful young lady, youngest sibling to three brothers (one of whom passed on), raised by a single parent, is truly an inspiration and role model to her team and community. The Eerste River Rugby Football Club as well as her team mates wish her well on this exciting journey even though they will miss having their strongest center and flyhalf player watching their backs,” says Joseph. Anyone wishing to contribute in any way toward helping her buy those amenities not covered by the scholarship, are welcome to contact Joseph on WhatsApp on 074 926 2872.
