eritage watchdogs in Durbanville are worried about the future of the pink house in Queen Street Durbanville.

The empty house has been severely vandalised in the past few years.

The pink house is situated on erf 9701 in Queen Street, which belongs to Village Square Properties. Village Square Proper-

ties, an affiliate of Estantia Holdings, plans to develop the 1.48 ha on the corner of Oxford and Queen Street into a huge retail and office development, which will be named Village Square.

Alfred Bester of the Durbanville Heritage Society said he is concerned that the old house has been vandalised beyond repair and that an important historical building will be lost due to the lack of action from the developer and other authorities such as the

City of Cape Town and Heritage Western Cape to maintain the house and prevent further vandalism.

It is also feared that the developer let the house be vandalised on purpose for the developer to be able to apply for its demolition once it is beyond repair, or to revamp it as they wish.

Although the developer at the end of last year employed two security guards to watch over the property day and night, it is too late,

he said.

“Some of the wooden floor boards were ripped out and recently the house became a dumping site,” Bester said. He inspected the house in December last year.

“In some rooms all the floorboards are stripped out – every window pane has been broken. A valuable fireplace has been broken out, and pipes have been stripped. There is nothing left of historical value.

“The roof has holes and gutters and downpipes are not functional, causing further damage,� he said.

According to Bester the guards were often not at the premises when he checked, as they were apparently using toilet facilities elsewhere. “Why did the developer not make sure there are toilet facilities on the premises, so that the house can be monitored 24 hours per day?� he asked.

Bester said the City of Cape Town and Heritage Western Cape “failed in their legal obligation to protect heritage objects as prescribed in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act�.

The city, as well as Heritage Western Cape, which he described as “totally ineffective�, are to blame for this, he said. “We will be laying a formal complaint with the city manager as well as the National Heritage Council,� he said.

Rudi Rutters of Chameleon Architects responded in a letter to Bester and others that the pink house was already in a state of disrepair when Village Square Properties acquired the property during the latter part of 2011.

AndrĂŠ Pentz was appointed as heritage

consultant and an inspection was held with Sonja Warnich-Stemmet, a heritage professional of the Environmental Resource Management Department of the City of Cape Town, to record the condition of the house, Rutters stated. “A heritage statement was prepared, which will be submitted formally with a revised site development plan to relevant parties for comment,� he said.

Rutters further stated that it is the intention of the developer “to retain the heritage resource and to repair, renovate and maintain the building once approvals have been obtained.� “The final usage of the pink house will be

determined by Heritage Western Cape and the City of Cape Town in terms of the Heritage Act and the conditions of the site development plan for the erf,� he said.

Johan Botha, a director of Estantia Holdings, said it is their intention to restore the old house for commercial use, most probably a restaurant. “The building is older than 60 years now, and it is our statutory duty in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act to restore it. “We want to abide by it,� he said.

Botha said the construction of Village Square will start as soon as the financing of the project has been finalised.

Dié crèche, ’n Christelike dogsorgsentrum vir plaaskinders en omringende plase, word deur Badisa bestuur.

Die skooltjie is ’n paar jaar gelede gestig as ’n gesamentlike projek deur Durbanville Hills se ledeplase, die NG Kerk Kenridge en Badisa.

Gekwalifiseerde onderwysers sien om na die welstand en vroeë ontwikkeling van die plaaskinders van 3 tot 5 jaar oud.

Durbanville Hills het onlangs die heining laat oprig om die kinders se veiligheid te verseker en kunsmatige gras aangelê.

Dit is gedoen met geld wat deur die Durbanville Hills-plaaswerkerstrust ingesamel is.

The public is being challenged: take part in the Tygerfest Twilight Street Mile and rewrite the record books.

The street mile and fun run will involve loads of fun – and a bit of hard work – but will also kick off the first-ever two-day Tygerfest on Friday 21 February at Parow High School.

The Tygerfest is presented by the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP).

In 1981 South African Sydney Maree won the inaugural Fifth Avenue Mile in New York in 1981 with a time of 3:47.52, which remains the course record.

Professional and novice athletes are invited to do their best to chase down this almost impossible record at the Tygerfest street mile.

Then, straight after the street mile dust has settled, the Fun Run will kick off.

The Tygerfest Twilight Street Mile will start at 19:00 and the Tygerfest Fun Run at 19:15.

Gebou behoort nie meer aan Ministries ESMÉ ERASMUS

EC Ministries is nie langer verantwoordelik vir die maandelikse huur van die JC-dagsorgsentrum in Morningstar nie, omdat dit nie meer aan MEC Ministries behoort nie, het Marinda Cornelius, direkteur, gesê.

TygerBurger het verlede week berig (“Kinders sonder tuiste”) dat sowat 40 kinders van die JC-dagsorgsentrum in Morningstar in Durbanville tans tydelik in ’n motorhuis, asook in ’n kerk se pastorie gehuisves word nadat die sentrum sy huureenkoms vir sy gebou in Morningstar verloor het.

Dit was glo onder meer weens agterstallige huurgeld, wat sowat R20 800 beloop.

Die JC-dagsorgsentrum word die afgelope sowat 11 jaar gehuisves in ’n gebou wat behoort aan die Independent Order of True Templars (IOTT), ’n Christelike organisasie.

Bedryf Die JC-dagsorgsentrum is in Januarie 2003 deur Cornelius geopen en bedryf. ’n Huurooreenkoms vir huurgeld van R1 300 is sowat 6, 7 jaar gelede met E.E.M. Faure, nasionale leier van die IOTT, gesluit.

Faure wou aanvanklik geen huurgeld hê nie, het Cornelius gesê.

Volgens haar het sy self aangebied om te betaal vir hul watergebruik, wat Faure later omgeskep het in ’n huurooreenkoms.

Volgens Cornelius het sy in Mei verlede jaar reeds die sentrum aan die gemeenskap oorhandig.

Dit word nou deur Frances Louw,

prinsipaal, besit en bestuur.

Sy het gesê sy het nog tot Desember verlede jaar die huur, asook ’n maandelikse afbetaling van die agterstallige geld, betaal.

Dit was egter ’n direksiebesluit om geen verdere huur of agterstallige geld aan die IOTT te betaal nie, het Cornelius gesê.

Volgens haar was die gebou erg bouvallig toe hulle dit in 2003 in gebruik geneem het.

“Daar was geen heel venster nie, dit was nie omhein nie, die plankvloere was stukkend en die kombuis het uit slegs ’n staalkassie bestaan.

“Die toilette en wasbakke was in ’n haglike toestand,” het sy gesê.

Volgens Cornelius is die perseel vir jare gebruik vir prostitusie en dwelmhandel.

Spandeer Sy sê sy het destyds duisende rande spandeer om die perseel op te knap, ’n kombuis te laat installeer en die perseel te omhein. Sy het ook druk op die polisie geplaas om die gebied “op te ruim”.

“Mev. Faure moet dit maar daarteen afskryf, of ons hof toe vat as sy wil.

“Sy het tot voor Oktober laasjaar oor die jare geen pogings aangewend om die gebou op te knap nie, ons het dit self gedoen,” het sy gesê.

“As alles in ag geneem word, skuld MEC Ministries Faure niks nie.

“Die aanvanklike rede vir JC was om die kindertjies van die strate af te hou en dit is nog steeds die dryfveer.

“Die skool (in Morningstar) kan getuig dat die kinders uit JC goed gemanierd is en makliker aanpas,” het sy gesê.

Meeting to be held for Greenville ESMÉ ERASMUS

An environmental advisory committee meeting for the proposed Greenville Garden City, a new housing development in Fisantekaal, will be held in the Fisantekraal Community Hall on Wednesday 5 February.

The Greenville Garden City, a new town on 767 ha of land at Fisantekraal near Durbanville, will eventually accommodate over 16 000 homes, schools, community facilities, public spaces and transport infrastructure.

The project has been ratified by the conclusion of a memorandum of understanding between Garden Cities and the City of Cape Town.

Construction of the civil works for the first phase has already commenced. Building will start in June, comprising 868 new houses.

A total of 2 800 houses have been approved in terms of town planning regulations. The total project cost for these 2 800 units will amount to R382 million over the next three years.

The purpose of this first meeting is to establish a structure with representatives from the authorities and society, such as the community, civil society and government.

This structure will collaborate and monitor the environmental performance of the housing project to ensure that it is compliant with the relevant environmental conditions that have been set out.

The meeting will be held from 15:00 to 16:30. All interested and affected people are invited to attend the meeting.

Philharmonic starts summer fest in style The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s eighth International Summer Music Festival kicks off on 6 February at 20:00.

Durbanville het byna tot stilstand gekom by die gesig van ’n enorme hoop huisraad langs die pad. Gary Third (foto bo) beduie hier aan nuuskieriges watter huisraad te koop is. Hy en Ronel Visser is Dinsdag uit hul huis by die Quaintly Lodge te Vissershokweg 39 gesit deur die balju nadat hulle ’n uitsettingsbevel, wat uitgereik is weens agterstallig huur, geïgnoreer het. Dit het die balju twee dae geneem om die huis te ontruim. Talle nuuskieriges het daar stilgehou om na die deurmekaar hoop huisraad te kyk.

Gewonde man ná huisroof naby wynkelder gekry ESMÉ ERASMUS

’n Gewonde man, wat vermoedelik betrokke was by ’n huisroof in Van Riebeeckhof, is verlede Dinsdag omstreeks 07:00 deur spoorsnyers van die polisie in ’n veld naby die Contermanskloofpad, in die omgewing van die Durbanville Hills-wynkelder, gevind.

Die man was vermoedelik een van vier mans wat omstreeks 02:00 op ’n huis in Welgelegenstraat in Van Riebeeckshof toegeslaan het. Hulle het ’n skuifdeur na die hoofslaapkamer oopforseer. Die vrou van die huis het wakker geword van die geraas en

die mans deur die venster buite gesien.

Sy het op haar man geskree en hy het wakker geword. Hy het gesê sy en die kinders moet hulle in die badkamer toesluit.

Hy het sy pistool gaan haal. Die mans was toe reeds in die kamer en hy het ’n paar skote afgevuur. Een is in die wang getref. Die mans het met twee selfone gevlug.

Die polisiehelikopter en honde-eenheid het die gebied sedert die voorval gefynkam.

Die gewonde man is omstreeks 07:00 deur spoorsnyers gevind. Hy was vermoedelik op pad na die Du Noon-plakkerskamp.

Hy is in hegtenis geneem en daarna per ambulans na die Tygerberg-hospitaal geneem. Hy sal later in die hof verskyn.

Balans is die geheim by diereregte TygerBurger het die afgelope tyd ’n paar stories publiseer waar die beweerde benadeling van diere betrokke was, en telkens was die reaksie heftig.

Diere lê meeste van ons baie na aan die hart. Of ons nou troeteldiere het of nie, ons voel saam met enige dier wat na ons mening onregverdig behandel word.

Ons skree “Save the rhino!”, verag die ivoorstropers, walvisjagters, dolfynuitwissers, haaivin- en perlemoensmokkelaars, organiseerders van hondegevegte en haanuitdagings, en word woedend oor mense wat diere, veral troeteldiere, mishandel of verwaarloos. En met reg so.

Dan is daar dié wat dit ’n stappie verder vat en die gebruik van diere in flieks, sirkusse en vertonings afskiet, ongeag of daardie diere andersins geen oorlewingskans sou hê nie en ongeag of daardie diere goed behandel word.

Daar’s hulle wat nie vleis of enige diereprodukte eet nie en so “nee” sê vir die doodmaak van enige dier.

En ja, elke mens moet maar volgens sy/haar eie heil salig word, lui die spreekwoord, en elke godsdiens wat aan die gemiddelde wêreldling bekend is, staan respek vir ander, die aarde en alles wat daarop is, voor.

En dis ’n moeilike beginsel, want wie verdien meer respek as ander – die dier, die eienaar, die slagoffer, die veiligheid van ander? Wat laat die skaal balanseer?

Diereregte is ’n emosionele aangeleentheid, maar soos in enige ander ding, lê die geheim in balans. Vingerwys behoort dikwels by die vingerwyser te begin.

Guess I will have to clean the sidewalks I am writing from an overgrown, forgotten corner. After either being side-stepped or ignored by the five “agents” below, I have the following

questions: 1) Who is responsible for cleaning the sidewalks of public land?

Apparently not any of the following: 1) the builder of the new high school in Brackenfell; 2) the steering committee of the project; 3) the City of Cape Town local government; 4) the councillor for the specific ward; 5) the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Therefore: I am responsible for cleaning my neighbourhood sidewalks, and for picking up bins full of weeds every day the wind blows, thus “cleaning” the adjacent large plot of public land too.

I am all too aware of the numerous serious problems facing our community, but one-way communication is another. These “agents” must think we who are living in this area have coped with the mess for the past 30 years already, so why do we complain? At least acknowledge our existence then, please.

On Saturday in Checkers, and on Sunday in Shoprite (Parow) I “fell victim” to a new trend.

Two people that are together stand in different queues at the till, the trolley of groceries is then passed on to the one who reaches the till first. So, the one minute you think that you’re “next” for the cashier, the next minute the person in front of you takes a trolley of groceries from his friend/child/ partner. People please use your minds and respect others.

WYSIGINGS AAN DIE HERSIENE GEÏNTEGREERDE ONTWIKKELINGSPLAN (GOP) VIR 2013/14

Vrugtetert met lekker skop Ja, ja, ek weet ons moet nou slaaiblare en komkommer eet, die voordele van ontgifting bespreek en nuwe tekkies dié tyd van die jaar koop! Navorsing sê egter dis glad nie ’n goeie idee om met ’n dieet op ’n Maandagoggend te begin nie. Dan voel dit soos ’n straf en jou kanse op sukses is baie minder. Begin liewer op ’n Dinsdag. Daar is dus nog kans om een keertjie ’n lekker tert uit die oond te haal; dán kan jy sê die vakansie is nou regtig verby.

Hierdie resep vir vrugtetert met skop, het ek oor die jare verwerk en dit is voorwaar ’n wenner.

Dit lewer ’n groot tert; maak dus seker jou tertbak is groot genoeg. My bak se afmetings is 29 cm by 21 cm, maar dan is hy tjokkeblok tot bo vol. Die tert is redelik ekonomies en nie so erg ryk nie. Alhoewel daar alkohol in die sous kom, is dit nie noodsaaklik nie. Jy kan dit bloot weglaat en net melk gebruik. Nog ’n voordeel van die tert is dat dit goed vries.

Jy het nodig: 1 blikkie vrugtekelkie, perskes of pynappel met stroop (210 gr.­blikkie) . ¼ koppie vrugtekoekmengsel (rosyne, korente, lemoenskil) . 2 koppies koekmeel . 1 ½ koppies suiker . 3 eiers

stroop 1 koppie suiker ¼ koppie Amarula of Cape Velvet­likeur, sjerrie, soet witwyn of brandewyn . volroommelk (gebruik blikkie om mee af te meet) . 1 teelepel karamel­geursel . 1 eetlepel margarien of botter . . .

Plaas die alkohol (indien gebruik) in die blikkie en vul tot bo met melk. Kook alles saam oor lae hitte tot suiker gesmelt is.

Sny die tert in opdieningsporsies en giet die sous stadig oor die tert sodra dit uit die oond kom. Gooi klein bietjies op ’n slag oor en maak seker dit trek in en bedek die hele tert ewere­ dig, anders dam die sous op in die middel en die kante kry nie genoeg sous nie. Bedien met tuisgemaakte vla, goeie gehalte roomys of ‘n skeppie styfgeklitste room as die begroting dit toelaat.

Electric Light Orchestra will be heading to Cape Town for the very first time and are set to play the Liqui-fruit Amphitheatre in Paarl on Saturday 15 February.

TygerBurger spoke to lead vocalist, Phil Bates, ahead of the band’s South African tour.

Last time ELO were in South Africa, Phil says he played with ELO Part II, in around 1995, the band only played one outdoor concert in Johannesburg.

“It was a very strange tour we were on, hopping around from country to country with one gig here and one gig there,” Phil explains, adding that he’s always wanted to visit Cape Town.

“I’m actually very happy that we were able to arrange a concert there,” he says, speaking from his home in Berlin.

The British group ELO was formed in 1971, by Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne with the idea of creating popular rock music, with classical nuances. The group disbanded in 1988, only to be revived by drummer, Bev Bevan, in 1989 as ELO Part II, which is when Phil came on board.

“I have quite a long association with ELO,” Phil says. His own band at the time were signed to the same label as ELO in the 70s and toured with them internationally.

“When ELO Part II was being formed it was a perfect fit really, because of my past association with them and because I knew the guys and music very well,” he says.

Phil continues by saying while all of ELO’s songs are interesting and great songs to sing, the one that he feels really captures the spirit of the band is “Mr Blue Sky”.

“It has all the elements in there that represent ELO, I think,” Phil elaborates. He says fans can expect to hear this as well as “all the popular major hits” when the band performs locally.

They will be joined on stage by Gautengbased quartet, The Muses.

“We play with string sections of different sizes,” Phil explains, adding that the suggestion to use The Muses in South Africa came from the local promoters.

“We’ve been in contact and we’ve listened on YouTube and they seem very good,” Phil says; “It seems like an interesting combination – the young and old.”

Phil says jokingly that even if it doesn’t look like it on the outside, he would like to think that music keeps him young.

“Every concert is special,” he says, adding: “It’s a special thing really when you play music to an audience.”

He points out that different audiences respond in different ways, but says: “With this music, generally the response is very positive.”

Rates rebate increased The benefits that property owners can apply for have been increased.

All pensioners aged 60 and older and disabled people with a household income of R12 000 per month or less, qualify for property rates rebates.

This comes after the City Council decided that the rebate for the elderly and disabled persons should be increased for the current financial year.

Those with household incomes below R4 000, will qualify for a 100 % rebate.

New applicants can apply any time during the financial year when they reach the age of 60.

The conditions are: V Applicants must be 60 or older or a disabled person; V Household income must not exceed R12 000 per month; V Applicant must be a full-time occupant of the house and, V Applicant must complete application form, supply copy of his or her ID document and a proof of income.

New tools to help fight spread of TB City Health is looking at new and innovative ways to reduce the spread of TB. Authorities are serious about fighting this disease as they start implementing strategies that will include shortening the waiting period for results and access to treatment.

In 2013, 72 % of patients at city clinics were started on treatment within five days and City Health is looking to increase this figure to 85 %, thus reducing the spread of this airborne disease.

Existing strategies have already seen a steady reduction in the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) with reported figures having decreased from 877/100 000 in 2009 to 705/100 000 in 2012. This drop is particularly impressive in the light of the concomitant HIV epidemic.

“The high prevalence of HIV, which weakens the immune system of people infected, has been fuelling the TB epidemic,” said the city’s mayoral committee member for health, Lungiswa James.

“To make matters worse, TB is more difficult to diagnose in HIV infected people.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) promoted the GeneXpert test in 2010, the first new TB diagnostic test in the last 125 years.

South Africa was the first country in the world to immediately roll out the new test for all people who presented with TB symptoms.

Recently this new diagnostic test was added at all state laboratories. This test is not only more sensitive in diagnosing TB, but it also indicates whether the TB is resistant to Rifampicin, which will immediately see the patient being started on an alternate TB regimen.

The laboratory processes the GeneXpert test within two to six hours, so patients can receive their TB test results the next day.

Previously, the smear test used for TB diagnosis failed to detect the disease in about one out of three people and a follow-up sputum culture had to be requested, taking up to six weeks for the laboratory to produce results. Once TB treatment is started, patients are quickly rendered non-infectious.

Therefore, by shortening the waiting time for making the diagnosis, patients are able to start treatment a lot sooner and this reduces the spread of the disease.

SPCA cautions owners about pets and heat Pet owners, beware.

The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA is cautioning all pet owners to take extra care of their pets during the upcoming peak summer month – heralded by February’s advent.

They particularly warn against leaving pets unattended in vehicles.

“The CoGH SPCA inspectorate receives on average five calls a week pertaining to pets left alone in locked vehicles. This number tends to increase during summer,” the organisation says.

Doing this can cause shock, serious dehydration, heat stroke and hyperthermia.

“Dogs cool themselves by panting and excessive temperatures and confined spaces make it difficult for them to do so.

“It can take as little as a mere 15 minutes for a pet to succumb to the effects of heat exposure.

“A vehicle’s interior temperature can rise to double that of outside temperatures within minutes – and leaving windows ajar does not reduce this by much.”

One of the stipulations of the Animal Protection Act is that pet owners should always see to it their pet has access to cool, shaded areas and clean water.

“Dogs with thick fur should also be given extra care to keep them cool, calm and comfortable.”

If residents should see animals trapped inside locked cars, they are advised to report it immediately to the nearest security per-

sonnel, or directly to the SPCA Inspectorate.

Owners can follow these crucial tips to keep pets safe in scorching weather: VAll animals need a constant supply of fresh water.

VAll animals need shelter from the heat and dog kennels should be removed from direct sunlight. Rabbits and other small mammals kept in outside hutches should always be kept in the shade. All caged animals, even if they are indoors, should be kept out of direct sunlight. Bird owners must monitor the amount of sunlight and heat that can affect aviaries or birdcages which are close to windows.

Daniel and Friends launch NPO fund The Daniel and Friends Fund was launched with a function at Antikes outside Durbanville last Thursday evening.

The fund, a non-profitable organisation, was formed to honour the life of young Daniel le Roux from Uitzicht, who died at the age of three and a half on 23 August last year.

He was born with Leigh’s syndrome, a neurometabolic disorder that affects the central nervous system.

The fund’s aim is to support disabled children, together with their parents and/or caregivers and to equip parents with the skills

to take care of their children, and educate and raise awareness in the public.

A Valentine’s dance in aid of the fund will be held at Kaapzicht Wine Estate and will include a three-course meal, live entertainment by Rooies and friends and a great auction.

Kirstenbosch Gardens is the place to be this Valentine’s Day according to GoodLuck’s Juliet Harding.

She’ll be there herself of course, performing with GoodLuck for the Loved Up in the Garden Valentine’s event which also features performances by DJ Claas Brieler (Jazzanova) and Clara Hill, Lisa Kekaula (vocalist for Basement Jaxx, The Bloody Beetroots and The BellRays), Michael Lowman and Mathew Gold.

TygerBurger spoke to Juliet from America, where the band was invited to attend the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) show, a trade event for musical equipment.

Juliet says they are also using the trip to find inspiration for new material.

GoodLuck is an electro-swing group made up of Juliet, Ben Peters and Raiven Hansmann.

Ben and Juliet played together previously in a group called JacSharp.

“Ben always had this passion for electronic music,” Juliet explains. She and Ben started GoodLuck while still playing with JacSharp.

“We decided it was something people needed, they needed to be entertained in a club environment,” she explains, adding: “You want to dance, but you also want something different, so we wanted to fill that gap.”

The group started off with a year-long residency in Camps Bay and Juliet says they just grew and became successful.

Juliet says she thinks it’s their live shows that make the band, known for hits like “Taking it Easy”, “Harlem” and “Hop On Hop Off”, so successful.

“We performed for a year before having a single song on radio and it was a great little nursery for us to play every week in Camps Bay and to grow an audience there,” Juliet explains.

“As soon as the radio success started happening we started playing bigger shows, but we were very lucky that we had this year in a nursery as it were and just learning how to read audiences and really gauge what they enjoy, what they want and what they need from us,” she goes on.

“Radio’s been amazing as well,” she adds, saying: “The other day we were doing an interview and we realised that there hasn’t been a time where we haven’t had a song on radio since November 2010.”

“We’ve been so fortunate,” she says.

Juliet says they have also been focusing on the festival scene and have good partners working with the group.

“We’ve been blown away by the response that we’ve had, she says, adding: “Also it’s been a really quick uptake from their side.”

This year GoodLuck will again be touring Europe for three months over their summer period.

The Loved Up show will be GoodLuck’s first performance at Kirstenbosch.

Darling, you just have to go The Darling Music Experience, with the theme, Music Freshly Squeezed, kicks off this weekend.

The festival was launched in 2006 with the intention to bring chamber music to the West Coast.

The music, mostly performed by known national and international solo instrumentalists and small ensembles, is presented in a fresh and sometimes provocative and radical way.

This and the quality of the musicians in general, together with the ambience which Darling provides draws audiences from the West Coast, Cape Town, the wider peninsula and beyond. But the Darling Music Experience remains a community

event with free access for Darling’s disadvantaged population.

Festival highlights include the Darling Chamber Choir in a “Choral Fantasia” and the DMA Youth Choir performing traditional African songs, a jazz matinee with the world class Cape Town Trio and “Tango at the West Coast” with Stanislav Angelov and Albert Combrink.

dgemead band, Llevado, is hoping for big things this year.

Top on their to-do list are plans to record their first album and music video, but they also want to push themselves in the local festival scene, with an eye on getting booked to play as many festivals as possible.

TygerBurger last spoke to the band in 2010, when they had just changed their name from Entrenched.

Since then, they have been hard at work perfecting their songwriting skills, working on new material and their overall sound.

This is according to Justin Davie, the band’s frontman.

He is joined in the band by Sheldon Bredenkamp on drums, Noel Krieger on rhythm guitar and Christopher Wilson on bass.

History The band was formed when Justin, Noel and Sheldon met in high school.

“We all actually took music in high school,” Sheldon explains, adding: “But we didn’t know what we played.”

“I think I only knew you played guitar when I saw you on stage for the first time,” he says, talking to Justin.

When the two discovered they played different instruments, they started jamming together.

“Noel just decided he wanted to get in on the action as well,” Sheldon goes on, adding that they were later joined by Chris.

Deciding on a band name wasn’t as easy as forming the band. While they started as Entrenched, they were also called Finding Harm for a brief stint before deciding on Llevado, a Spanish word.

“Looking for a band name was really hard,” Justin says, adding: “We even asked our parents.”

“We were sitting around a table having a few beers with Sheldon’s mom and she was on the internet and she checked the word llevado,” he goes on. While they didn’t know the meaning at the time (it has different meanings, depending on the context), they decided to stick to its English pronunciation.

Justin describes Llevado’s music as commercial rock, while Sheldon adds “light” as an adjective, although they have been compared with Matchbox 20 and John Meyer.

Touring They joke that sitting on TygerBurger’s Orange Couch is a highlight for the band, but Sheldon also says: “I think touring to Joburg was the best for us.”

The band went to Joburg with The Undefind in 2010. “That was when we were all still free, now we’ve all got work, so it’s a

lot more difficult to get together and play shows,” Sheldon says, but he quickly adds: “We make the time for it; we always have time for the music.”

Llevado will be making time this Saturday (8 February), when they perform at the Sound Studio in Milnerton. “It’s a bring and braai, so it’s going to be lekker chilled,” Justin says.

The event is called the One Song Wonder Contest and Llevado will be competing against Gravitee, Kixx, Evolution, Midnite Special, Bourbon St and Switchtalk for a prize of R3 000 sponsored by Marika’s Restaurant. The day starts at 15:00 and entrance is free.

Concert pays tribute to Steinway piano The Cape Town Concert Series will, as a precursor to its new season, present a recital by Anton Nel, inaugurating the recently refurbished Steinway Concert Grand Piano.

This concert, not part of the subscriber series, will take place on February 8, and is a collaboration with the SA College of Music.

Nel will play “Sonata in D” by Mozart, “Sonata no 2 in G minor” by Schumann, Beethoven “Waldstein Sonata” and others.

The official opening of the new subscription season begins on February 22 with a recital by Charl du Plessis.

At this concert, Du Plessis will start his South African solo recital tour of his 10 favourite Steinways. The history, engineering and craftsmanship of every hand-made in-

strument will fall under the spotlight. He will play a range of music from Bach to Rachmaninov and Gershwin, showcasing the endless colour possibilities of each piano and will not only explain the inner workings of the piano but during the concert the whole mechanism and keyboard will be removed to show the delicate inside.

Dousing flames early could save lives ESMÉ ERASMUS

A total of 20 fire extinguishers were handed over to community leaders in Fisantekraal and Klipheuwel last Tuesday 28 January in a fire prevention remedial outreach programme by the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service Department.

In a recent severe fire on Wednesday 22 January at Fisantekraal three families were traumatised by a fire that broke out in the formal housing area.

Two formal residential annex homes and a wendy house and all their belongings were severely damaged after fire spread from the wendy house. Luckily nobody was injured.

The fire prevention remedial outreach programme was started last year to brief the community on the threats posed during a fire outbreak. The fire risks of having backyard dwellers on their premises were especially pointed out to them.

“The programme is aimed to educate local communities in how they must equip themselves to put fire safety measures in place at their homes – in informal and formal hous-

ing areas,” said David Willemse, coordinator of the Fire and Life Safety Education Department of Fire and Rescue of the City of Cape Town.

“In the formal areas we have the scenario of the backyard dwellers, which poses a major concern on the fire safety aspects in combating fires as was the case at this fire,” said Willemse.

An initial 20 fire extinguishers were handed over to prominent and active community members who attended workshops on 21 and 22 January – 10 to residents in Fisantekraal and 10 in Klipheuwel.

A further 190 will be handed out in each area soon. Thus, a total of 400 extinguishers will be donated and distributed to these communities.

The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services’ Fire and Life Safety Education Department has been busy since last year with this project amongst vulnerable communities in the city’s metro, northern informal and formal housing areas, Willemse said.

It was done in collaboration with the SAVE Community Foundation and Advance Fire Technology Systems.

Historic legends race at Killarney

I

nterest is building up rapidly as the Cape’s only annual international historic race meeting that is going to be held on the northern suburbs circuit at Killarney on Saturday, draws nearer.

In what is certain to be the most popular sporting event staged in the northern suburbs this year, Killarney has the huge advantage of being bigger, and having more varied spectator vantage points than other facilities. It can therefore accommodate a large crowd, many of them with their cars parked nearby and easily accessible.

An excellent overseas entry featuring a variety of the fastest and best sports cars of their time has been received.

These include Ferrari F430s and Lola T70 V8s. The Fords on the list are made up of GT40s, Daytona Coupes, Mustangs, Capri Peranas and a supercharged Cobra. The even larger Porsche challenge is headed by a malevolent 917 that in its final form as a twin turbo 917/30 in the Cam-Am Series in the United States, was rated the most powerful sports racing car ever built.

Saloon However Michael Campagne’s V8 Chev Corvette Super Sport that recently finished second in the international 6-Hour race on the Spa Grand Prix circuit in Belgium may be the best of them all.

On the saloon front, multiple former South African champion Sarel van der Merwe may find his Galaxie (die Rooi Gevaar), challenged by identical big ones in the hands of Dutch saloon champion At Verkuijien and the Cape’s Ferdi van Niekerk Snr in the pre’66 Legends events. Killarney was originally part of the Springbok Series of endurance events that included the famous Kyalami 9-Hour Race.

Die internasionale uitdaagwedrenne tussen Suid-Afrika, Engeland en Namibië is om die draai en beloof vir groot opwinding.

Tygerberg Raceway is die gasheer vir die uitdaagwedrenne op 8 en 15 Februarie in die 2.1-klas en hitstjor-klas.

Die Suid-Afrikaanse span is op 30 November gekies by die nasionale kampioenskap, wat ook by die Tygerberg Raceway gehou is.

Drywers in die SA span staan nou die kans om Protea-kleure te verwerf. Die nasionale wenner, Christo Kotze, lei die 2.1-klas, met onder meer Barend du Plessis, Micheal Norman in sy span.

it is weer tyd vir die MTBS! Dié grootste interskole-atletiekbyeenkoms in die land, geborg deur Die Burger, vind Vrydag vir die 20ste keer in die Bellville-stadion plaas.

Daar moet weer rekenskap gegee word van weke en maande se harde oefening – op en van die baan.

Hierdie byeenkoms is ’n absolute móét om te beleef. Indien jy nog nie deel was van die “grootse skouspel” van atletiek, sang en ritmiese ingeoefende bewegings nie, dan kan jy gerus Vrydag by die Bellville-stadion ’n draai gaan maak.

Reeds van Donderdag af stroom die ondersteuners en nuuskieriges na die baan en teen sononder is al wat ’n oop plek is reeds toegepak met gazebos, sambrele en stoele – net om seker te maak van ’n plekkie.

Die hekke maak Vrydag reeds om 05:00 oop sodat Jan en San Alleman nog ’n oop plekkie kan kry. Moet egter nie na 06:30 daar aankom nie – teen daardie tyd bars die stadion behoorlik uit sy nate en is die atmosfeer elektries. Die motoriste wat niks met die MTBS te doen het nie, moet verkieslik ’n alternatiewe roete kies.

Optogte Om 06:50 begin die verrigtinge met die optogte van die atletiekspanne. Daarna word dirigente van al vier skole om die beurt voorgestel en kry elke skool 7 minute om hul ding te doen en die beoordelaars al vroeg te beïndruk.

Daarna is dit tyd vir aksie. Om presies 08:00 klap die skoot vir die eerste item. Terwyl die sang voortgaan op die pawiljoen, kry die atlete nou die kans om hul slag te toon.

Spring gou vir Stellies se rugbydinee Die Hoërskool Stellenberg se rugbylegendesdinee, wat vanjaar op 5 Maart gehou word, is vinnig besig om een van die mees gesogte funksies van sy aard in die noordelike voorstede te word en beloof om weer ’n magdom bekendes in die rugbywêreld te lok.

Kaartjies vir dié aand, wat vanjaar rugbypersoonlikhede soos Neil Powell (Springbok-sewes-afrigter), Dawie Theron (junior Springbok-afrigter), Pieter de Villiers (Springbok-skrumafrigter), Divan Serfontein (oud-Springbok-kaptein), André Venter (oud-Springbok-flank), Toks van der Linde (oud-Springbok-stut) en Duitser Bosman (Varsity rugby) gaan hê, word soos soetkoek opgeraap.

Van der Linde sal die paneelbespreking lei, terwyl die bekende sanger/komediant Andries Vermeulen vir musiek en vermaak sal sorg. ’n Hele aantal gesogte rugby-items, wyn en verskeie ander aandenkings word opgeveil. Volgens die skool se rugby-organiseerder, Pierre du Preez, is daar nog ’n beperkte getal tafels beskikbaar.

“Ons waardeer die geweldige belangstelling van ons ouers, borge en ondersteuners en is dankbaar daarvoor. Ongelukkig is die getal tafels beperk, belangstellendes moet dus gou spring,” het Du Preez gesê.

Vanjaar is Stellenberg nie net die gasheerskool nie, maar ook die verdedigende kampioen en voel sekerlik die druk wat daarmee gepaard gaan. Hy gaan beslis swaar leun op sy sterk hekkies-atlete. Met WP-atlete soos Chané Leuvenink, Rozelle Meyer, Janka van Wyk, Tiaan Swanepoel, Keanen Leenderts, Eugene Kleynhans en Lance Blows in die span, gaan dit egter nie maklik wees om hom van sy troon te stoot nie.

Tygerberg, met die Meyer-broers, Francois Carstens, Darnelle Lewies, Austen Da-

vids, Marco Whitmore, Henko Maartins, Nico van der Westhuizen en Anneke Germishuys in sy geledere, mag dalk net die groot verrassingspakket oplewer.

Sterre Met Bellville se Zani Kruger aan die spits en ander sterre soos Lindi Anker, Eric Lochner, Angelo du Toit, Alec Heydenrich, Jessica Baker en Stefan Engelbrect daar om hul ding te doen, kan dié skool beslis nie buite rekening gelaat word nie.

Die gewese kampioen, D.F. Malan, het egter nie op sy louere gaan rus nie en sal beslis ’n grootse poging aanwend om sy verlore glorie te herwin. Met WP-atlete soos Carlo Vis-

ser, Rowhaldo Ratz, Jancke du Toit, Caioly Gabriel, Saskia Stander, Carla Werth, McMarshall Hartzenberg, Nika Jordaan, Suné Faure, Melindi de Beer en Nicole Pieters, almal slaggereed, gaan hulle beslis hul stem dik maak. Margaret Pansegouw, die organiseerder vir die afgelope 5 jaar, wil weer eens nie ’n voorspelling waag nie. Vir enige navrae rakende die byeenkoms kan die Hoërskool Stellenberg gekontak word.

V Geniet die MTBS op Tygervallei­winkelsentrum se groot skerm dié Vrydag van 10:00 tot 17:00. Die ope­ ningseremonie sal elke uur op die LED­skerm in die arena herhaal word. Daar sal ook deur die loop van Vrydag ’n video­ en fotogalery beskikbaar wees op www.tygerburger.co.za.
