DEVELOPMENT DECISION: REVIEW DEMANDED

T
he Durbanville Community Forum (DCF) has taken matters to court to have the decision taken by the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, about the proposed Uitkamp development on the farm Clara Anna Fontein outside Durbanville reviewed. The approved development comprises about 700 residential units, a retirement village, a private high school, an open space network and a small private nature reserve, as well as the upgrading of the existing conference centre. The DCF applied for a court order in the High Court last Monday to review and set aside and/or correct the decision of Bredell
in granting environmental authorisation on 25 November 2011 in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (Nema), as well as Bredell’s decision made thereafter on 27 February 2013 to dismiss the appeal submitted by the DCF to set aside the decision to grant environmental authorisation.
Court order The application is for a court order against Bredell as first respondent, the City of Cape Town as second respondent, and Boetie Louw as a trustee of the AFM Louw Familie Trust as third respondent, as well as the other trustees as the fourth and fifth respondents. Other approvals that still are still necessary before construction work can start, is
the amendment of the urban edge by the city, as the land lies outside the urban edge. The urban edge as defined runs along Odendaal Street and Vissershok Road. Approvals are also still necessary from the city for rezoning and subdivision. Both matters are currently pending before the city. Members of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management (Spelum) committee did a physical site visit on Monday on Clara Anna Fontein. Unfortunately TygerBurger was not allowed to attend the meeting, but Christo Kannenberg, chairperson, said that a decision will only be taken after a discussion at the next Spelum meeting on Wednesday 11 September.
The history of the planned development of the farm land dates back to June 1978 when Louw already had plans drawn up for the future township development on an area of 127 ha.
Application An affidavit from Danny St Dare, a wine farmer of Caradell farm and a member of the DCF’s executive committee, was filed in support of this application on behalf of the DCF. In his affidavit St Dare states that the key issues are the conflict of the development proposal with existing planning documents; the high agricultural potential of the land; and the extent of the Uitkamp wetland on the land. FROM PAGE 1 In the scoping report, as part of the Environmental Impact Report (EIR), it is stated that the land is generally of low agricultural potential and have been lying fallow due to extensive gravel mining and inadequate rehabilitation of the land. In his application, the developer, Boetie Louw, used a soil map apparently prepared by the Trust’s town planning consultants (First Plan), showing 70,2 % of the land to be of low agricultural potential, 29,4 % of medium potential and 0,4 % of high potential. This soil map was based on a soil survey completed by Bennie Schloms in August 2003. The original soil map of Schloms was not included in the EIR. St Dare stated there is general consensus among Durbanville farmers that the land is high potential land and is ideal for vineyards. “This is supported by an analysis by an experienced soil scientist, Dr Freddie Ellis, on the original soil survey report by Schloms,” he stated. According to the analysis by Ellis, which was compiled in July 2013, at least 60 %, but potentially up to 75 % of the land is highly suitable for the cultivation of vineyards. Ellis stated in his report that the Schloms report does not support a finding that 70 % of the land has low agricultural value. He also stated that the soil map by First Plan, that was filed in the EIR, differs significantly
from the soil map recreated from Schloms’ data. He continued that the map by First Plan misrepresents Schloms’ findings and appears to be prepared by an unqualified person. “It cannot be relied upon by any official considering the agricultural potential of the land in question,” he said. St Dare stated in his affidavit that the allegations of extensive ruinous gravel mining are an exaggeration and the soil map by First Plan is not a misinterpretation, but a misrepresentation. He stated “it is fair to conclude that at a very early stage Boetie Louw (the developer) acquired high potential land for the sole purpose of development and has systematically pursued that goal over the years.” “Louw specifically relies on the degradation of the land, caused by himself, due to gravel mining and inadequate rehabilitation, to motivate his entitlement to development rights. He even exaggerates the extent and effects of the gravel mining to create the impression in the minds of officials, consultants and the public that the land is generally of no or low agricultural value.” St Dare also stated the development is in conflict with several existing planning documents.
At the time the environmental authorisation was granted on 25 November 2011, the Cape Peninsula Metropolitan Urban Structure Plan, which was replaced in 2012, was still in force, but Ayub Mohamed, the director of integrated environmental management, who granted environmental authorisation on 25 November 2011, ignored the requirements. At the time the application was brought for environmental approval, the applicable land use planning framework, the Western Cape Provincial Spatial Development Framework (WCSDF) did not provide for urban development on that land. According to the WCSDF, the urban edge of portion 18 meets all the characteristics of a permanent urban edge. According to the city’s Draft Northern District Spatial Development Framework, which was approved in July 2012, the portions 18 and 19 fall outside the urban edge, and are thus depicted as undesirable for urban development. Also, in an internal memorandum dated 9 September 2011 by Chris Rabie, director of environmental and spatial planning, to Ayub Mohamed, director of integrated environmental management (region 1), it was con-
cluded that this development is incompatible with all the relevant planning policies. Furthermore, the wetland delineation study done on the Uitkamp wetland that extends into the land on which the development is to take place, was omitted from the EIR and “the occurrence of seasonal and temporary wetlands denied”, St Dare stated. The wetland, which is protected by statute, is part of the historic Mosselbank drainage system. In this report it was recommended to zone all temporary, seasonal and permanent wetland zones as open spaces and to exclude them from the development. “It is obvious that the recommendations, if followed, would have led to a scaled down development, as a number of these areas, such as some housing, the main entrance and the school site fall into this zone that needs protection,” St Dare stated. The above-named respondents must now show cause, if any, why the decisions referred to should not be reviewed and set aside and/or corrected. If any of the respondents do want to oppose, they must then deliver notice thereof within 15 days after receipt of the notice of motion.

Man dies in stabbing A
young man (25) of Brackenfell was stabbed to death in the early hours of Sunday morning in the well-known Blizzard’s pub in Wellington Road in Durbanville. Ashley Makerdooj and friends went to the pub for a last drink after they were at a friend’s birthday party at a home in Brackenfell. According to the deceased’s father, Rakesh Makerdooj, his son’s friends came to his house shortly afterwards to tell him about the tragic incident. Ashley, who was his only son, worked at Kwik-Fit in Brackenfell. Ashley’s friends told him a group of men was interfering with a white female, who was at the pub with his son.

and he bled to death. According to bystanders, the man who stabbed him ran out, jumped in a waiting car and drove off in the direction of Morningstar. Kelly Maree, owner of the nightspot, told TygerBurger everything happened very quickly and although paramedics arrived at the scene, they could not save Ashley’s life. “It is tragic that a young man lost his life and I have sympathy with the family. “We do not tolerate such behaviour, but try to manage the pub in a civilised manner. In the eight, nine years of existence, this is the first such incident, he said. The Durbanville police confirmed the incident and said they have video footage of what happened. At the time of going to press, they could not disclose more information. No arrests have been made yet. Ashley is survived by his father and his mother, Nissa, and a sister, Ricasha (27), both from Pietermaritzburg. The funeral will be held in Pietermaritzburg.
Crime scene Another man, who wants to stay anonymous, was at the bar when Ashley was stabbed. According to him he put his jacket with his cellphone and car keys on Ashley in an attempt to stop the blood. When the police arrived they told him not to remove his belongings as it is part of the crime scene, but to collect his jacket with his phone and keys at the police station. When he went to collect it, nobody knew anything about it, he alleges. But in the meantime his car, a blue Citroën C2, was allegedly stolen. His white Blackberry is apparently also stolen, as a stranger, some “Jerry” answered when he made a call to his own phone. He has laid charges of theft.

Hennie Bosman the statesman STEHAN SCHOEMAN Former world karate champion Hennie Bosman from Bellville is more than a world-beater when it comes to life. During August he played an important role when three parliamentarians from Russia and Japan met to discuss diplomatic ties. It is the first time since World War II that these two countries have met on parliamentary level. “Every year I travel to Japan and to Russia and I have a very good relationship with both countries. The bottom line is that karate brought these two countries together,” said Bosman. He was invited by Michail Slipenchuk,the deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on natural resources, environmental management and ecology, who is also the president of Kyokushin karate in Russia. Bosman who studies and speaks Japanese, was asked to make the Japanese delegates feel welcome and to also help with interaction between the two countries. “I was really honoured that they asked me to attend. The sport we all love made a massive impact in bringing them together. Everything went smoothly and new friends were made, which is brilliant. “I also gave a masterclass to 70 junior karateka in Ulan Ude, Russia. The local newspaper, radio and television stations covered the event.” Slipenchuk has invited Bosman to bring some of his junior karateka to train in Russia early next year. This will give them the opportunity to learn and compete with some of the best in the world. Russia is known for their hard working ethics.

Grace Nienaber (55) was op borgtog in verskeie ander sake van bedrog, waarin sy na bewering “goedkoop” drank verkoop, maar dan met die geld verdwyn het, toe sy op hierdie nuwe klagte in hegtenis geneem is. Sy het ook tevore al tronkstraf uitgedien op bedrogklagtes. Twee Spar-supermarkte in Bellville is na bewering met onderskeidelik R40 000 en R10 000 se vleisbestellings ingeloop, terwyl ’n vrou van Bellville R26 750 verloor het. ’n Soortgelyke saak is ook by die Durbanville-polisie aangemeld vir die bedrag van R7 500 en een in die Strand vir sowat R27 000. Nienaber is op 14 Augustus in hegtenis geneem en sal weer op 19 September in die Bellville-landdroshof verskyn. Volgens Veronica de Kock, ’n eiendomsagent in Bellville, neem sy gereeld bestellings by vriende as sy ’n winskopie teëkom. Sy het van dié lamsaanbod te hore gekom en bestellings van vriende geplaas. Sy en Nienaber het begin Augustus in ’n koffiewinkel ontmoet, waarna sy die vleis bestel het. Toe die vleis moes arriveer, was daar egter allerhande verskonings van onder meer dat die vragmotor in Calvinia gebreek het, en later dat daar by ’n weegbrug beslag op die vragmotor gelê is.
“Ek moes daarna my eie hardverdiende geld trek om al die depositogeld aan my vriende terug te betaal,” het De Kock gesê. ’n Spar-supermark in Bellville het op 5 Julie 200 skape teen R24 per kg en en 20 agterkwarte teen R600 stuk bestel. Die vleis is nooit afgelewer nie, omdat “die trok by Malmesbury gebreek het”. ’n Kwikspar in Bellville het ook vleis bestel en sowat R10 000 se deposito betaal. Nienaber het na bewering in September 2010 verskeie mense, onder meer ’n apteker en werknemers by ’n skoonheidskliniek by die Cobble Walk-winkelsentrum in Sonstraalhoogte, genader oor goedkoop drank. Sy het bedrae van onderskeidelik R52 300 and R63 000 van voornemende klante as deposito ontvang. Nienaber is op 30 Januarie 2009 tot drie jaar korrektiewe toesig, asook twee jaar tronkstraf, in geheel opgeskort vir vyf jaar, gevonnis. Sy is toe skuldig bevind daaraan dat sy valslik R250 000 by ’n sakeman in Brackenfell geleen het om ’n gemeenskapsprojek te begin, wat nooit die lig gesien het nie. Sy het ook onder valse voorwendsel ’n tender by die departement van arbeid hiervoor bekom. Sy het egter die geld gebruik om ’n motor vir haar seun te koop. Nienaber sal weer op 22 Oktober in verband met die bedrog met die drankverkope in die Bellville-landdroshof verskyn. V Mense in Durbanville wat soortgelyke verliese gely het, moet ao. An ongoing audit on police criminality, in July revealed that as many as 1 448 police members in South Africa have criminal records – a crisis parliamentarian Dianne Kohler Barnard, DA shadow minister of police, has taken up. Of these criminal cops, 306 had criminal records before they joined the police and 1 142 committed crimes while in the police, Kohler Barnard says. Documents show Gauteng with the highest number of criminal cops with 325, followed by the Eastern Cape at 275, KwaZuluNatal at 173, Free State at 141 and the Western Cape at 140.
Still employed According to her the vast majority of these perpetrators are top brass including one major-general and are all still employed by the police, yet to be fired. It was further revealed, she said, that 568 of the 1 448 members are guilty of multiple and serious criminal offences. “The breakdown shows that there were a total of 3 204 offences committed by the 1 448 convicted police members who are still employed in the SAPS,” she said. This includes 54 for murder, 116 for attempted murder, 37 for rape, 33 for attempted rape and 917 for assault. Kohler Barnard subsequently this month called on National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega to take immediate action and
dismiss the criminal police officers, as she is empowered to in terms of section 36 of the SAPS Act. “The police are constitutionally entrusted with preventing, combating and investigating crime, it is therefore imperative that the people entrusted with this duty are not criminals themselves,” she said. According to Kohler Barnard, the audit of police criminality only went up until the end of 2009, and she believes this figure to be much higher if continued to 2012.
Convicted “In 2010/11, 2 154 members were criminally charged, only 869 were suspended and only 520 dismissed from the service. In 2011/12, 1 323 SAPS members were charged with murder, rape, armed robbery and corruption. Are those who were convicted still working within the SAPS? If this audit is anything to go by, there is a strong possibility that this is the case,” she said. Meanwhile she wrote a letter to Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa requesting that he explains the rationale for keeping convicted criminals in the police service. According to her no deadline has been set for the completion of the “audit process” which was begun in 2010 and not one criminal member of the SAPS has been dismissed. Since the news broke two months ago, neither the provincial police, nor national police responded to several media inquiries from TygerBurger. We were referred to the provincial media office and office of the provincial commissioner. We wanted to know how many policemen and women with criminal records are stationed at stations in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, and what these charges were.

Straatmense raak nou groot kopseer ESMÉ ERASMUS
D
ie probleem met straatmense wat inwoners lastig val, het onlangs ’n nuwe wending geneem toe ’n hawelose man ’n sakevrou wat hom wou verwilder, na bewering te lyf wou gaan. Volgens Theresa Uys, raadslid vir wyk 21, wat die dorpskern insluit, word sy daagliks deur soortgelyke klagtes oorval. Die hawelose man, bekend as Johnnie, het glo op Louwena Drotscke, eienaar van Village Interiors, op die hoek van Kerk- en Voortrekkerstaat, Durbanville – skuins oorkant die stadsaal en Durbanville-polisiekantoor – afgestorm toe sy vir hom gesê het om op te hou om mense lastig te val. Volgens Drotscke het Johnnie en sy houvrou op Woensdag 14 Augustus twee bejaarde vroue wat by die stadsaal gaan bloed skenk het, gepla oor hulle nie vir hom geld wou gee nie.
Kardeur “Hy het die een vrou se kardeur oop gehou sodat sy dit nie kon toemaak nie. Sy het eindelik daarin geslaag om die kardeur toe te maak en weggery. Hy het dit toe met nog ’n ander bejaarde vrou gedoen,” het sy vertel. Nadat sy oor die straat op hom geskree het hy moet die mense uitlos, het hy glo aggressief op haar afgestorm. Die eienaar van die winkel langsaan en ’n vriend het haar te hulp gesnel en Johnnie verwilder. “Hy het openlik, sommer net daar, gaan hurk en teen die stadsaal se muur urineer,” het sy gesê. Drotscke het daarna in haar motor om die blok gery om die sekerheidsman van die gebou van Mikahaja Court, die ge-
bou waarin haar onderneming geleë is, te soek. Sy het toe die sekerheidsbeampte by die stadsaal gaan sê om Johnnie te verjaag. “Toe Johnnie sien ek praat met die sekerheidswag, het hy ’n stok opgetel en my motor bestorm.” Die bestuurder van ’n eiendomsagentskap dreig nou ook al om met sy “baseball bat” te kom werk om sy agente en kliënte te beskerm teen die haweloses se gedrag.
Probleem Albert Gerber, bestuurder van RE/ MAX Property op die hoek van Wellingtonweg en Oxfordstraat, het in ’n e-pos aan Uys gekla oor die probleem by die parkeergebied voor Rust-en-Vrede. Hy het gesê een van die sogenaamde “karwagte” skree en klap teen kliënte se motors as hulle nie vir hulle geld wil gee nie. Twee agente is ook gedreig dat hul motors gekrap gaan word. Hulle wil ook nie meer werk toe kom nie, omdat hulle voel hul lewens word bedreig, het hy gesê. “Dit het regtig nou handuit geruk,” het hy gesê. Uys het tevore reeds ’n beroep op die inwoners van Durbanville gedoen om nie geld of enige ander goed aan hawelose mense te gee nie. Sy wil ’n plaaslike sorgnetwerk van alle plaaslike organisasie begin. ’n Datum vir ’n werksessie hieroor sal later bekend gemaak word. Uys skryf die toename in hawelose mense in Durbanville toe aan die sukses van stadsverbeteringsprojekte in Vredekloof en Voortrekkerweg, Bellville. Residents who need assistance to pay their monthly municipal accounts now have until 31 October to apply for special rates rebates from the City of Cape Town. Senior citizens who are 60 years or older, as well as recipients of a disability grant or pension, could qualify for rates rebates ranging from 10 % to 100 %. The upper limit of total household income for these two categories has also been raised from R10 500 to R12 000 per month. In addition, all property owners with a total household income of R3 000 or less per month may apply to be registered as indigent, and may qualify for a 100 % rates and refuse rebate. Their arrears may also be written off once during occupation of the property. ‘Gif’ onskadelik vir mense ESMÉ ERASMUS

rese dat inwoners van Durbanville moontlik vergiftig is toe ’n spuitvliegtuig ’n swamdoder op hawerlanderye aanliggend tot Vierlanden en D’Urbanvale gespuit het, blyk heeltemal ongegrond te wees. ’n Inwoner het verlede week in ’n e-pos mense gewaarsku nadat hy Vrydag 23 Augustus gesien het ’n spuitvliegtuig bespuit landerye naby sy huis in Vierlanden en D’Urbanvale. Die produk, Duett, is op hawerlanderye van die Diemersdal-wynlandgoed gespuit. Die inwoner, Gert Steyn, het veral mense met kinders in die Chesterhouse School en Hoërskool Durbanville gewaarsku teen die gevare van Duett. Die vleiland in D’Urbanvale kon ook geaffekteer word, het hy aan TygerBurger gesê.
Gewaarsku Op die inligtingspamflet word gewaarsku die produk bevat middels wat kanker en genetiese defekte kan veroorsaak, fertiliteit en ongebore babas kan aantas. Dit is glo ook giftig vir vislewe. Maar die produk is relatief veilig en hou nie gevaar in nie, volgens dr. Gerhard Verdoorn van CropLife Suid-Afrika en direkteur: Griffon-gifinligtingsentrum. “Duett bevat karbendasim en epoksikonasool. Die akute giftigheid van beide die aktiewe bestanddele vir soogdiere en dus die mens, is onbeduidend. “Beide is minder giftig as gewone tafelsout en sou daar wel ’n beduidende hoeveelheid van een of albei van die middels op mense se velle en of oë val, is daar ook geen irritasie nie.
“Dus, in kort, is die produkte nie akuut giftig vir mense wanneer dit volgens die produketiket se aanwysings gebruik word nie,” het hy gesê. “Die waarskuwings is gegrond op studies met laboratoriumdiere en langtermynwaarnemings op mense. Daar is geen klinkklare bewyse dat die middels wel kankerwekkend, mutagenies of teratogenies is nie.
Proefdiere “Dis wel korrek dat dit in proefdiere waargeneem is, maar mense moet in ag neem dat proefdiere aan ekstreme hoë dosisse van die aktiewe bestanddele oor ’n lang tydperiode onderwerp word, wat nooit in die praktyk sal gebeur nie,” het hy gesê. Dit het egter wél geblyk dat sekere vereistes in terme van die Regulasies vir Plaagbeheeroperateurs-wetgewing onder die Wet op Misstowwe, Veevoedsel, Landboumiddels en Veemiddels nie nagekom is nie. Daarvolgens moet die plaagbeheeroperateur instansies en mense binne ’n 5 kmradius vanaf die plek waar lugtoediening sal plaasvind, vooraf daarvan verwittig. Verder, ingevolge die SANS 10118 vir lugtoediening, moet mense in die onmiddelike omgewing van die area waar lugtoediening gaan plaasvind, gewaarsku word deur die nodige kennisgewings aan te bring. “Dit is verpligtend vir die plaagbeheeroperateur, die vlieënier, om mense in die 5 km-radius daarvan te verwittig en vir die produsent (plaaseienaar) om in die onmiddellike omgewing kennisgewings aan te bring. “Met ’n kennisgewing word bedoel ’n
eenvoudige plakkaat wat bloot aan plaasheinings aangebring kan word. Sou hierdie twee aksies nie geneem word nie, is die lugtoediening regtens nie wettig uitgevoer nie en is die wet oortree. “As mense dit nie nakom nie, moet die owerhede dit aanspreek,” het Verdoorn gesê. “Dit help nie om meer wette te maak en niks word toegepas nie,” Hy het gesê talle versoeke is al aan die departement van landbou gerig om dié wet te hersien. “Laastens, wil ek mense gerusstel en vir hulle aandui dat alle chemiese stowwe op aarde giftig is. Die kwessie is egter dat die dosering van die chemiese stof dit uiteindelik giftig maak,” het hy gesê. Thys Louw van Diemersdal het gesê hulle was genoop om ’n spuitvliegtuig in te span, omdat die landerye ná die swaar reënval onbegaanbaar was vir ’n trekker en spuitwa, waarmee dit gewoonlik bespuit word. Volgens die vlieënier, Michael Orsmond van Westelike Provinsie-oesbespuiting, het hy juis met rookspuite 100 % seker gemaak daar is geen wind toe hy die landerye bespuit het nie. “Ek kry my instruksies eers op die vliegveld. Die wet is nie prakties uitvoerbaar nie,” het hy gesê. “Ons is nie ‘cowboys’ nie, maar tree professioneel op,” het hy gesê. Hy het gesê hy het aanbeveel dat nog twee landbou-chemiese middels vir onder meer luise en onkruid, wat daardie dag gespuit moes word, weggelaat word juis oor ’n moontlike gesondheidsrisiko. Intussen word ’n ondersoek na die voorval deur die departement van landbou gedoen.

A message doing the rounds asking the public not to buy arum lilies from street vendors, is potentially harmful and irresponsible, CapeNature has said. The message, which asked the public to ignore the vendors’ product because it was purportedly destroying the habitat of the arum lily frog, is not entirely truthful, Marietjie Engelbrecht from CapeNature has explained. “The arum lily frog (Hyperolius horstockii) inhabits wetlands in the lowlands of the Western Cape and is not threatened by the harvesting and sale of arum lily flowers,” she said. “It is also not classified as a threatened species, but is locally threatened in places by habitat loss for urban development in particular. “These frogs are dependent on wetlands in which to breed and wetlands often tend to contain arum lilies. “Although the frogs occasionally shelter in the arum lily blooms, they are not dependent on the blooms, and it can be considered mere coincidence that these two species occur together in certain wetland habitats,” Marietjie said.

Beautiful trees for firewood I used to live in a pleasant leafy avenue. It’s one of the reasons that I bought my house in that road; I always had a country feeling when I drove down my road. Leafy. Green. Yesterday the council came to “prune” the trees in my road. They started with the largest, thickest branches. When I tried to stop them they used all sorts of excuses. “It’s to let in light” or “It’s so the rubbish truck can get through.” Neither of those excuses were valid, but it didn’t matter. The trees came down. And then the real reason for the destruction was revealed. “Would I like to buy some firewood?” they asked. So for any of you living in a street with beautiful trees, beware, it’s winter and the council tree rapists are hungry. ANON Email

My eerste vraag aan Annette is: “Hoekom het jy niks gedoen nie?” Hoe op dees aarde gebeur dit dat volwassenes kan toelaat dat 100 onbekende, ongenooide kinders tussen die ouderdomme van 14 en 20 jaar hul huis oorneem met drank en openbare stoornis en hulle doen niks? Hoe laat jy toe dat onbekende meisies van 14 (met drank) kuier saam met onbekende studente (met drank) in jou eie huis en al wat jy doen, is jy beman jou kamerdeur? Dis mos verregaande. Wanneer my kind na partytjies genooi word, is daar ’n paar standaardvrae: Wie gaan almal daar wees? Hoeveel volwassenes gaan toesig hou? Gaan daar drank wees?
Daar is ’n spesifieke rede waarom ek daardie vrae vra – dis om my kind se veiligheid! Sodra ek my kind by die partytjiehuis aflaai, beteken dit ek is gemaklik met al die veiligheidsmaatreëls en dan is die volwassenes in beheer verantwoordelik om namens my op te tree as ouer. Die inligting wat ouers gehad het oor Annette se partytjie was 30 kinders, geen alkohol en drie volwassenes en dit was beslis nie die geval nie. As ek my kind by jou huis afgelaai het op grond van daardie inligting en iets het met my kind gebeur by die partytjie soos hy uitgedraai het, sou ek jou op elke moontlike manier verantwoordelik gehou het. Nie die “BC” nie, nie die “oophuispartytjie”-gier nie en nie die onbeheerbare kinders nie – jy is verantwoordelik. Mense het jou vertrou om hul kinders veilig te hou en jy het nie – nou wil jy kla oor die onbeheerbare kinders. Ek wil liewers kla oor die ruggraatlose grootmense. WAT??? Durbanville

Ek wonder hoe ek sou voel as niemand bereid was om vir my te betaal nie. Die meisie wat R1 300 gekos het, moes seker ’n spogperd gewees het. Ek aanvaar skole moet vorendag kom met skeppende

Legendary concert pianist, David Helfgott, will bid farewell to South Africa when he performs his last shows in the country at the City Hall on 14 and 15 September for his Farewell, South Africa tour. Since 1998, Helfgott has been performing sold-out concerts in South Africa and holds the country very dear to his heart. He even chose to celebrate his 60th birthday in 2007 with a concert tour to the country. Helfgott soared to international fame after the release of the Oscar award-winning film, Shine, in which Geoffrey Rush gave a compassionate portrayal of the pianist. As a result, his exceptional life story has inspired people across the globe ever since. Born in Melbourne to Polish-Jewish parents, his musical talent was obvious from an early age and he became known as a child prodigy. He went on to study at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London at the age of 19, but towards the end of his studies he suffered an unfortunate mental breakdown and returned to Australia. Over the years he managed to overcome his illness with the help of loyal friends and his caring wife, Gillian, whom he married in 1984. Since the mid-1980, he re-established himself as a concert pianist; touring all over the world and giving recitals that inspire and move people from all walks of life. Saying goodbye to the Home The Durbanville Children’s Home presents a ladies’ breakfast on Saturday 14 September from 10:00 at the Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, Paarl to raise funds for its school leavers’ programme. The well-known Soli Philander will act as the master of ceremonies, while Zanne Stapelberg and Karen Zoid will perform opera and rock songs. “A child leaving the children’s home is saying goodbye to his or her home,” says Johanna Strauss, marketing
manager at Durbanville Children’s Home. “We would like to arrange a special farewell for each leaver, as well as help them to continue their studies and perhaps also assist with furniture and household items they will need,” Strauss said. outh African, and international, music legend, Johnny Clegg, will be performing in Durbanville soon. With a career that spans over 30 years, Clegg has a long list of career highlights. “Playing at ‘Concert in the Park’ in Ellis Park in 1985 to 120 000 South Africans of all races,” is one of the highlights he lists, but then there is also opening for The Grateful Dead in one of their stadium shows in 1989 in Los Angeles, USA and supporting the Steve Winwood tour for two months in the United States and the United Kingdom in 1988. Clegg talks about another one of his highlights: “Playing the UK birthday concert for Nelson Mandela in 1987 and having Jackson Brown share my slot singing my song ‘One Human, One Vote’. He was a very important influence on my lyric writing.”
Headline Then in 1988, Clegg also headlined the Amnesty International tour in Abijan, as he had a number one hit there at the time, “I call your name”. “The line-up was Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Tracey Chapman. Tracey loved my show and she invited me to support her six-week USA/Canada tour later, which I did,” Clegg says. In 1989, Clegg won the French Victoire de la Musique award for the biggest selling album in the country that year. The award was presented to him by the then Prime Minister,

He was the first South African solo artist to play and fill, the Royal Albert Hall. “Having Nelson Mandela walk on stage during my performance of ‘Asimbonanga’ in Frankfurt, Germany 1997 and having him share his ideas about music and what it means to him,” Clegg says is another highlight. Clegg says he continues to find inspiration for songwriting from books, poems, movies, and conversations. “I am always interested in crossing over different musical styles and this has also contributed to keeping my creative horizons open,” Clegg says. Clegg’s stepfather was a journalist, and he says, this contributed to the music that he makes. “He took me into the townships at the age of nine and showed me the
other side of South Africa, hidden from white South Africans,” Clegg says, adding: “He also loved kwela music and African jazz and I grew up listening to this.” Clegg says he has never really played in Cape Town over an extended period and will be here for a few shows this month. He will be recording a live, unplugged album at The Baxter from Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 September. When asked if he has any plans for recording with his son, Jesse Clegg, Clegg says: “Only when I hang up my boots.”
Favourites He talks about his favourite music in South Africa at the moment: “I like Zahara, as she is the first black female singer songwriter to compose and perform on her guitar in both English and Xhosa,” he says, adding: “I like my boy’s work a lot in terms of songwriting, I like Phuzukhemisi and many other traditional Zulu masikande musicians.” “I also like Prime Circle, the ultimate survivors of a tough and unforgiving rock scene in SA.” Clegg will be at Hillcrest Quarry in Durbanville on Sunday 15 September. s sanger, musikant en skilder is Stephan Visagie ’n man van vele talente. “As ek myself moet beskryf, is ek basies ’n ‘Jack of all trades’ wat uiteindelik vas gesteek het by die kunste-gedeelte,” sê Stephan. “Ek het die eerste keer in die musiekbedryf geland toe ek so net oor die drie jaar gelede by Chris Coetzer begin sanglesse neem,” verduidelik hy. Coetzer is ’n lid van die plaaslike Drie Tenore. “Deur hom het ek met Christa Steyn en haar seun, Douw Steyn, in die verbinding getree,” sê Stephan. Stephan het toe sy eie liedjies geskryf, maar sê hy het sy singery eers geheim gehou. “Toe ek uiteindelik drie jaar gelede die moed bymekaar skraap, toe besluit ek ek gaan nou voluit,” sê Stephan. Sy eerste album, Los my hart, is in 2011 bekend gestel. “Van daar af was dit net een rigting – vorentoe,” sê hy.
Volwasse Stephan sê sy musiek word geklassifiseer as volwasse kontemporêre musiek. “Maar enigiemand kan daarna luister,” voeg hy by. Hy sê sy lirieke is bietjie dieper as algemene musiek, maar nog steeds met ’n lekker ritme. Hy beskryf dit ook as kitaar-gedrewe musiek. Stephan skilder nou al vir ongeveer nege
jaar en sê dis ook iets wat hy nooit gestudeer het nie. “Ek het myself geleer skilder,” sê hy. “Die eerste paar probeerslae het dit nie so goed gegaan nie,” erken hy. “Maar ek het net aangehou en van die heel eerste skilderye het ek verkoop gekry.” “Nou is dit nege jaar later en ek het vasgesteek by akrielverf. Ek het so bietjie geprobeer met olie, maar ek het nie die geduld om ’n maand te wag vir iets om droog te word nie,” spot Stephan. Sy werk bestaan meestal uit landskappe en blomme en so nou en dan sal hy ’n portret verf. Musiekgewys het Stephan onlangs ’n kontrak geteken by Vonk-Musiek in Johannesburg en sy nuwe album, 4Keeps, is nou beskikbaar. Hy sê die platemaatskappy het sy liedjies “nuwe baadjies aangetrek” en die CD het ook van sy groter treffers op, soos “4Keeps”, wat in die Kaap en op Bosveld Stereo goed gedoen het, saam met die liedjies wat op Suid Afrikaanse country-trefferlyste was. Intussen is Stephan ook besig om te skryf aan ’n nuwe album, wat hopelik in Maart 2014 of 2015 sal uitkom. “Ek is nie ’n haastige skrywer nie,” sê Stephan. “Ek wag tot iets my beetpak en ek iets behoorliks in die hande kry, dan sal ek die liedjie van daar af vat,” sê hy. Stephan is onlangs aangewys as ’n ambassadeur van Ribbons4Roses, ’n organisasies wat werk met kinders wat kanker het en kinders met outisme en ander gestremdhede. Stephan sal die organisasie help met hul geldinsamelings- en bewustheidsinisiatiewe. While local Melissa Hertz’s musical journey has been short so far, she is sure that this is her destiny. “I have not been a musician for very long but yet feel that this is my destiny and what God called me to do,” Melissa, a mother of two from Uitzicht, says. While she dreamed of being an artist or painter, while growing up, she says: “I never believed, in my wildest dreams that I would be able to succeed at being a musician. “My musical journey has been a surreal one and an incredible experience.” Melissa was a bit of a late musical bloomer and only realised that she was passionate about music at the age of 25. “Almost every night I would have the same dream where I was either singing or playing a guitar or piano. This I believe was God calling me to my destiny of becoming a musician,” she explained. Due to circumstance, music lessons were never really an option for Melissa growing up, so at 25, she got her first guitar and started taking lessons. “A few months later I got a piano and found that writing songs and playing was something that made me feel so alive and fulfilled,” she says. A chance meeting in a bookshop with a local rapper, D-Note, led to Melissa recording vocals for three songs on his album.

Malan se oorstroomde velde. Hierdie toernooi sal nou hopelik eerskomende Saterdag afgehandel kan word. Twaalf spanne sal van 09:00 af mekaar op ’n rondomtaliebasis aandurf om vanjaar se kampioenspan te bepaal. Die deelnemende spanne is D.F. Malan, HTS Bellville, Durbanville, Bellville-Suid, Scottsville, Scottsdene,

Nick is the catcher for the Blaauwberg Baseball Club first team. Playing senior baseball at the tender age of 16 shows the talent of this young man. He captains the Western Province u-16 side and they went undefeated in the national tournament. The Western Province team recently faced a tough Great Britain national side and they won comprehensively 14-2. Being born in the United States, Nick dreams about playing college baseball for North Western Illinois.
