Geese make it ‘home’ ESMÉ ERASMUS

A clever Egyptian geese pair just knew the safest place to take their newlyborn brood and raise them, is the home of a bird-lover in Uitzicht, Goedemoed. Three years after Wendy Herbig, wellknown environmentalist in Durbanville, saved the mother goose and her goslings from a sure death on Lubbe Street, the goose and her life-partner turned up at Wendy’s side gate at her house in Goedemoed with their whole brood in tow. In 2009 Wendy saw a pair of Egyptian geese trying to cross Lubbe Street with their newly-hatched babies. “There were just too many cars and trucks, so I picked up the little ones, stopped the traffic – I was alone which made it quite difficult – and crossed the road, mommy and daddy following me. “As I got to the other side of the road, a 4 x 4 vehicle got impatient and simply drove straight at the geese and hit the daddy goose.

“He lay at the side of the road for a while with mommy goose crying over him. I had my hands full of the little ones and all I could do was walk home with them, with their mommy following me,” Wendy said. After she put the goslings down, she went straight back for the injured goose, but he was gone. “I looked everywhere, but couldn’t find him. The mother goose stayed in the garden with her little ones and called incessantly.” Then, just over two weeks later, the daddy arrived at her house with a broken leg. “I couldn’t catch him, because he could still fly, but he coped with the leg getting stronger all the time,” she said. This is not the first time the Egyptian geese pair returns to her house to raise their goslings. “At the end of that season they all left and I did not see them again until the following year in August when they appeared in my driveway with a clutch of babies again. I have no idea where she breeds or how far she walks to get to me. Last year

she did not make it to me. “But this past Saturday early evening I heard her calling and when I opened my side gate, she marched in with five little ones and then another five came struggling through the long grass behind her. “So, we now have 10 tiny little goslings, mommy who protects them constantly and daddy who keeps guard from the roof, Wendy said. The family dog walks past them without even looking, she is so scared of being honked at. “The cats are hiding in the house and the bunny has already had a firm peck on the bum, so they also keep their distance,” she said. “The pool is taking strain, but how can we look at money compared to the pleasure of knowing that I have given a mother a safe place to raise her family. “With the crime in the area being out of control, it is quite comforting having a goose family in my garden as nothing moves without the parents seeing and honking like mad,” Wendy said.
