Motoriste op die Klipheuwelpad buite Durbanville, asook veral inwoners van Graanendal en Durmonté, staar van vandeesweek af erge vertragings van tot ’n halfuur in spitstyd op dié pad in die gesig. Dit kom nét toe motoriste voorverlede Vrydag ’n sug van verligting geslaak het oor die stop-en-rybeheer op ’n 7 km-gedeelte van die pad tussen Durbanville en Klipheuwel gestaak is.

Die projek het juis ’n week gelede tot stilstand gekom toe die vergruisermasjien gebreek het. Onderdele is oornag vanuit Duitsland ingevlieg en daar is onverpoos gewerk om die masjien te herstel sodat die werk op die stuk pad naby die Eensgezind-onthaallokaal hervat kan word. Die frustrasie by motoriste het vroeër vanjaar opgevlam toe dit gelyk het of die projek oënskynlik stilstaan. Volgens Chambers is die vertraging deels veroorsaak deur die landwye tekort aan bitumen, asook

Opeenhopings in spitstye verwag . Van bladsy 1. Die koste hieraan alleen het sowat ’n R0,5 miljoen by die totale koste van die projek gevoeg, het hy gesê. Daar is laasnaweek begin om die laaste 1,5 km-gedeelte van die pad van net anderkant Lubbestraat in Durbanville tot by die indraai na Groot Phezantekraal-plaas te herbou. Die werk het begin op die linkerbaan (soos vanuit Durbanville) en die regterbaan sal met stop-en-rybeheer gebruik word om verkeer in beide rigtings te reguleer. Die padwerke aan die linkerbaan oor die besige verkeerslig by die Graanendal-woongebied en die ingang na Durmonté – vanuit Durbanville van sowat 150 m voor die verkeersligkruising tot 200 m ná die verkeersligkruising – is Sondag gedoen om die minimum ontwrigting vir motoriste te veroor-

saak, het Chambers gesê. Die pad is reeds verlede Vrydag gesluit vir tweeringtingverkeer. Die ryvoorrang by die verkeersligkruising by die Brackenfell-boulevard (by Graanendal) en Durmoné-ingang sal deur vlagmanne per hand verleen word. Chambers het gesê groot opeenhopings word met spitstye soggens en in die middae verwag. Motors sal na verwagting tot by Langebergweg en selfs tot verby die Mediclinic Durbanville opdam. Aangesien die Kaapse stadsraad nie toestemming vir amptelike ompaaie deur die omringende woongebiede van Wellwaypark, Goedemoed en Uitzicht kon verleen nie, sal motoriste self korter roetes deur hierdie woongebiede moet vind. Chambers het motoriste aangeraai om soveel as moontlik alternatiewe roetes te volg.

Van die alternatiewe roetes, soos Brackenfell-boulevard, beskik egter oor massabeperkings. In laasgenoemde geval is die massabeperking 5 ton. Mense wat nie ’n ander keuse het nie, moet ekstra tyd toelaat vir die vertragings, het hy gewaarsku. Hy het motoriste gemaan om versigtig te ry en gehoor te gee aan die vlagmanne se aanwysings. Hy het motoriste bedank vir hul samewerking en geduld. “Die naweek se werk het werklik goed en glad verloop. Die mense is baie geduldig en die samewerking is uitstekend, behalwe enkele belhamels en natuurlik meeste van die taxi’s wat geen respek vir aanwysers, tekens en ander padgebruikers toon nie,” het hy gesê.

The luck of a gang of three house robbers that is suspected of terrorising victims in Melkbosstrand, Table View and Durbanville over the last couple of months has finally run out. Two of the men were arrested and one shot and killed by police after their most recent job in Melkbosstrand went awry. An internal police investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is currently under way into the shooting of the suspect along the N7 on 29 August. The incident followed after a house robbery in Kiewietjie Road, Van Riebeeckstrand, Melkbosstrand on the same night. According to the IPID they are investigating the death of one of the three suspects. “It is alleged that one of the three occupants of the vehicle attempted to escape after which the police members shot him. He was declared dead on the scene,” said Moses Dlamini, national spokesperson for IPID. The other two suspects did not attempt to escape and were arrested inside the vehicle. The stolen property including the firearm was recovered inside the stolen vehicle. The deceased is a 26-year-old Angolan national from Hout Bay. The other two suspects – a 23-year-old Angolan and a 30-year-old Namibian – are both from Du Noon. “I competed against the best cellar workers in South Africa, worked hard and studied even harder. All these things make me proud of this award,” said Joseph Phiri, South Africa’s Cellar Worker of the Year. According to Phiri his eagerness to learn, seven years of cellar working experience in the wine industry, along with his enthusiasm for his work, were major contributing factors towards his success in the competition. The SA Cellar Worker of the Year Programme, which is funded by Wine Cellars South Africa and Winetech, aims to recognise all permanent cellar workers in South Africa’s wine industry. The intention of the project is to create role models for cellar workers, thus improving productivity, encouraging healthy relationships, transferring knowledge and promoting training. There were 102 participants in the first round of the 2012 programme, of which 34 went through to the second round. After delivering a presentation to a panel, 20 cellar workers were chosen to move on to round three. The three finalists were chosen from this group following an intensive wine tasting. Gladys Jafta of Vergelegen and Gerrie Grootboom of Roodezant Wines were included in the top three, along with Phiri. “The competition has so many levels: a written exam, a presentation and a wine tasting,” explained Joseph. “I concentrated on the wine tasting in particular, because my years of experience at De Grendel had prepared me sufficiently in the other areas. “We tasted wine every morning in preparation for this competition. As we don’t have defective wines here, we made a few examples ourselves – with too much sugar, acidity or water. We even left a glass of wine outside to oxidise, just so that I could identify a defective wine!” Joseph found his presentation with the title “The costs of making wine and the factors that influence it” the most demanding aspect of the competition. According to Charles Hopkins, cellar master at De Grendel, this award is significant because of the winemakers’ responsibility

Meyer gesels oor keramiek Die bekende keramiekkunstenaar, Hennie Meyer van Durbanville, het by ’n byeenkoms by Rust-en-Vrede oor sy keramiekprojek by ’n luukse Indonesiese hotel gepraat.

Meyer het hierdie muurinstallasie vir die Qunci hotel in Indonesië ontwerp. Dit is in die muur van die kunsgang aangebring.

Die byeenkoms is gehou deur die Durbanville-erfenisvereniging in samewerking met die Durbanville-kultuurvereniging. Meyer, wat veral vir sy dekoratiewe teepotte van keramiek bekend is, is in 2008 deur die eienaar van Qunci Villas, ’n hotel in Indonesië, genader om werke te ontwerp vir die versiering van die hotel se ingang. Hy het Meyer se keramiekwerk by ’n plaaslike uitstalling gesien. Dit het daarna in ’n groter projek ontwikkel

met die installasie van kunswerke in die hotel se kunsgang, asook die versiering van die portale en spa-vierkante. Die sowat 4 000 keramiekstukke is uit twee ton klei hier ontwerp, vervaardig, verpak en toe verskeep. By die hotel moes Meyer aan die plaaslike inwoners beduie hoe elke stuk geplaas moet word. Meyer het sy praatjie met skyfies van die kunswerke toegelig. Die sowat 40 gaste by die praatjie het voor-

According to a crime report by the Durbanville police, the incident happened on 30 August at about 23:15. Janet Koch, ’n gr. 10-leerling, het die kampioentitels in enkel- én dubbelspel by die Gauteng East Key Health Ope-tennistoernooi gewen. Sy het dit opgevolg met ’n tweede plek in die dubbelspel by die Groenkloof ITF-toernooi in Pretoria. Daarna het sy aan twee ITF-toernooie in Harare in Zimbabwe deelgeneem, waar sy onderskeidelik tot die kwarteindronde en halfeindronde gevorder het.

Dié sentrum, wat in Augustus 2001 geopen het en as nie-winsgewende organisasie geregistreer is, huisves tans 14 kwadrupleë. Volgens Patrick Botto, ’n inwoner en projekkoördineerder, kry die sentrum slegs ’n klein staatsubsidie, wat maar sowat 20 % van die sentrum se uitgawes dek. Die onkoste om die sentrum te bedryf beloop tussen R75 000 en R80 000 per maand. “Al die inwoners betaal vir hul verblyf en ons kry ook donasies uit die gemeenskap. Maar die res van ons uitgawes moet ons self dek met geldinsamelingsprojekte,” het hy gesê. Daar word gereeld in briewe en artikels gepraat van die landwye probleem in S.A. van straatmense wat ’n oorlas van hulself maak. Selfs hier in Durbanville het ons probleem die laaste jare vererger soos die arbeidswetgewing meer “werkgewer-onvriendelik” geword het. Die “bergie-motel” oorkant die polisiestasie is ’n goeie voorbeeld van die nagtelike skande in Durbanville. Durbanville is my dorp al vir meer as 30 jaar en ek was nog altyd gegrief dat dit ’n dorp is wat gekenmerk word deur ’n skewe gemeenskap, gegewe die rykmansmentaliteit en die armoede en drankmisbruik aan die ander kant. Hoe ons agter ons hoë heinings, 4x4’s en kerke skuil. Terwyl groepe van ons mede-burgers op die straat lewe in haglike omstandighede en ons steeds drank aan hulle verkoop asof daar nie ’n môre is nie. Wanneer gaan al die kerkgemeenskappe van Durbanville ernstig raak oor die gemeenskap waarbinne hul

bestaan? Daar word “uitreik-aksies” gehou, geld ingesamel en allerhande twak gepraat, maar dit lyk vir my oor die algemeen is dit net ’n sosiale klub wat so bietjie sing en uit Bybels lees. Ek sien geen, maar geen vasberade poging van hierdie “sosiale klubs” om ’n nagskerm te befonds nie. Daar is altyd geld om een, twee, drie dominees, pastore te betaal, maar nooit ’n nagskuiling nie. Die Amerikaners het ’n uitdrukking “Nimb” of te wel “ not in my backyard”. Kan ek ’n uitdaging rig aan die kerke van Durbanville om binne die volgende maand ’n paar “pre-fabs” op te rig op die parkeerterrein by die Daniel-sentrum en dit te bestuur? Ek wed hulle sal dit nie kan doen nie. Maar Sondag sal die kerke weer volgepak wees. Dis mos Durbanville se spesialiteit: Ons kan praat... en praat. FRANCOIS M E-pos

G’n simpatie met bedelaars Ek het geen simpatie of empatie met iemand wat op straat staan en bedel nie. Ek glo dat hulle net te lui is om te werk en dat dit maklike geld is. Jy het gesondheid. As jy ’n gesonde verstand het, kan jy vir jou werk skep. Elke mens het ’n talent. Gebruik dit. Dit het nie altyd so goed met my gegaan nie. Toe my eerste man siek geraak het, het hy sy werk verloor en het ek ook nie werk gehad nie. Dit is nie hoe hard jy val nie, maar wat jy doen om op te staan. Ek kon nie werk kry nie want ek het te lank tuis gebly en na kinders gekyk. Toe die balju een oggend aan my deur klop, het ek besef ek moet iets doen anders gaan ek op straat sit. Ek het toebroodjies met die laaste brood en konfyt in my huis gemaak en dit gaan verkoop. Met dié geld, het ek weer brood gekoop en die toebroodjies verkoop. Ek is daardie aand met R160 se wins huis toe.

Ek het R100 gespaar om weer die volgende dag toebroodjies te maak. Ek het later ’n Duitser raakgeloop en het salami wat van Windhoek gekom het, begin verkoop. In hierdie tyd het ek vele kere bedelaars probeer kry om saam met my te werk, maar 10 kg-salami wat tot 1 km ver gedra moes word, was te harde werk vir hulle. Die lewe gee mens keuses. Staan op veg terug. Het jy al ooit die geld wat jy gister gekry het deur te bedel aangewend om jou eie werk te skep? Wat is dan die probleem dat mense nie werk het nie. Net drie dinge: Vertroue, respek vir jou medemens en geloof in jouself. Dit is al wat jy nodig het om jou eie werk te skep. Waar daar ’n wil is, is daar ’n weg. PATRYS PIENAAR Brackenfell

Ek was bevoorreg om deur die verkeersdepartement uitgenooi te word na hul uitreik-geleentheid by die Alta du Toit-nasorgsentrum. Op pad soontoe het ek gewonder hoeveel mense nie sal sê die verkeersdepartement moet liewer aandag gee daaraan om motoriste te vang wat in woongebiede jaag nie. Die opgewondenheid van die inwoners van Alta du Toit het my laat besef hoe belangrik dit is om soms net ’n klein bietjie van jou tyd te gee om minderbevoorregtes gelukkig te maak. Die uitstraal van hul borrelende liefde laat mens vergeet dat jy binne die woelinge van die stad is! Elkeen wil net vir ’n mens ’n drukkie gee om te sê dit is vir hulle verskriklik lekker. Wat my sal bybly, is die deernis en geduld waarmee die personeel hierdie inwoners benader. Ek wil van die geleentheid gebruik maak om die verkeersdepartement en spesiaal die senior inspekteur, Waldo Prinsloo, te bedank vir dit wat hulle gedoen het. Ek is seker die inwoners sal nog baie lank vertel van hul ondervinding om agterop ’n motorfiets van ’n “speedcop” te ry en om aan ’n helikopter te kan vat! Dan wil ek ook ’n spesiale woord van dank rig aan George Gordon, Marina van der Meulen en al die personeel wat elke dag hul alles gee om die inwoners te beskerm en gelukkig te maak. Big shoes to fill for Santa’s boxes The Santa Shoebox Project kicked off on 1 September marking the launch of this year’s drive to collect gifts for thousands of children. This non-profit organisation has been collecting “Santa Shoeboxes” at Christmas time for thousands of children from vulnerable social backgrounds and this year the target is 100 000 children. These will be dispatched to more than 900 children’s homes, orpha-

nages and other child care institutions across the country. With “share the joy of giving” as the essence of the project, the Santa Shoebox Project offers people the chance to participate. Parents are encouraged to involve their own children in the process by selecting the name of a specific child from the selection list on the website. Gift boxes may then be chosen and filled according to the guidelines provi-

ded, with necessities such as toothpaste and a toothbrush, face cloth and soap as well as sweets, educational supplies, a toy and an item of clothing. The gift wrapped Santa Shoeboxes need to be dropped off at central distribution points across the country between 24 and 31 October. Kids also get cancer The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC), is creating awareness during September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This will be done by implementing programmes throughout the Western Cape, working closely with and providing support to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Tygerberg Children’s Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital. A study done by Tygerberg Hospital, found that a large numbe of children within the Western Cape are either undiagnosed or diagnosed when the cancer has already advanced. However, if a diagnosis is done early, between 70 % and 85 % of children can be cured. This has given CHOC the opportunity to establish a campaign which targets communities, schools and clinics throughout the Western Cape aimed at raising awareness and increase diagnoses. CHOC Westen Cape has provided facilities as a “home away from home” for families who are disadvantaged and who travel a long distance for treatment.

The CHOC Lodge Tygerberg offers assistance to families receiving treatment at the Tygerburger Children’s Hospital, while the CHOC House Plumstead takes in families from Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital including Groote Schuur Hospital. They provide care to children by making the wards more child-friendly and they have a dedicated volunteer programme aimed at empowering the children while they are in the hospital receiving treatment. As the majority of the children are from disadvantaged backgrounds, CHOC Western Cape also provides practical and nutritional support such as food, clothing, toiletries and funding for transport to the children as well as their families, to ensure that no child abandons treatment. The paediatric oncology units at both Red Cross War Memorial and Tygerberg Children’s Hospital who diagnose at least 220 children with cancer each year, dedicate their services and support to ensure that all children, regardless of family resources, are given individualised treatment and that access to all forms of highly-specialised cancer treatment is provided.

Lasers make eye ops even safer PROMOTION

Femtosecond laser technology has provided improved safety, predictability and accuracy in many eye procedures. As the most well known application of the Femtosecond laser is in the blade-free iLASIK procedure, the Femtosecond laser is used to create a thin corneal flap under which advanced CustomVue laser technology is used to treat myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism to

make patients independent of spectacles and contact lenses. Tyger Valley Eye and Laser Centre offers a free 30 minute iLASIK suitability evaluation with its laser-care optometrist. The amazing results are seen with Femtosecond-assisted Astigmatism treatment procedures for people suffering from high degrees of astigmatism (especially after previous corneal transplant surgery) who can now have their astigmatism drastically reduced using this new technology.

The Femtosecond laser is also used during corneal transplant surgery to very accurately cut both the donor and recipient corneas. This makes the procedure much more precise resulting in much lower post-operative astigmatism and also better refractive outcomes. Partial thickness corneal grafts selectively remove only the diseased part of the cornea. As the healthy layers are retained, the body does not recognise the donor tissue, hence there is a less risk of rejection, and steroid

medications do not need to be continued for a long duration. Tyger Valley Eye and Laser Centre can also import suitable donor corneas from overseas, so that there is no need to be on a long waiting list for a corneal transplant. However there are other procedures that utilise the Femtosecond laser including Intra-corneal ring segment surgery for the treatment of irregular corneas (in keratoconus), and the Flexivue micro lens implant for the correction of presbyopia.

Alzheimer’s Month a first for affliction The first World Alzheimer’s Month launched this month with awareness-raising activities across the world taking place during the month of September. World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September will play a key role in the month as the co-ordinated international effort reaches its peak. The theme for World Alzheimer’s Month 2012 is “Dementia: Living together”. Alzheimer’s can, and does, affect people from all walks of life. The World Alzheimer Report shows there are interventions that are effective in the early stages, some of which may be more effective when started sooner. It also shows there is a strong economic argument in favour of earlier diagnosis and timely intervention. Every year since 1994, Alzheimer associations across the globe have united on 21 September to recognise World Alzheimer’s Day. This year, World Alzheimer’s Month will mark the first global month-long campaign and a website dedicated to the Month will be available soon. To raise awareness and increase knowledge about dementia, Alzheimer’s South Africa has planned educational seminars, workshops and social events for people with dementia and their carers. Creative youth design difference Another call to creative youth to submit design proposals has been presented, as Shift is hosting their annual Fresh Talent Sustainable Design Competition. Janine Johnston, CEO of Shift says: “The competition is our main platform to showcase examples of sustainable design and how small things can make a difference. “It aims to challenge young people to think beyond beauty and functionality and consider how design can influence significant change to local and global communities.” To enter, designers should submit concept proposals, in response to the brief which is: “Small Change; A World of Difference”. The submissions may span various contemporary design fields from product, industrial and surface design, communication and graphic design, textile and fashion design, architecture and engineering, to create new models for sustainable business and community development projects.

The Arts Association of Bellville and Bellville Library are calling for entries for their annual Over 60s Art Exhibition. The Over 60s Art Exhibition aims to inspire, honour, celebrate and connect older artists while providing a platform for artists over the age of 60 to showcase their talent and creativity. Etching hope into SA landscape Morning cycle.

Renowned South African adventurer Riaan Manser, on behalf of KFC’s corporate social responsibility programme Add Hope, will consume limited calories while cycling the word “hope” across the face of the South African map over the next two months. His cycling odyssey will highlight both the plight of hunger and the positive impact that Add Hope is making to the country’s children.

Manser took off for his journey from SOS Children’s Villages in Cape Town on Friday 14 September. He spent time with the children that are under the centre’s care, sharing breakfast. Add Hope has had significant involvement with SOS Children’s Villages for the last four years. “The SOS Village is a home which provides basic needs like food, clothes, comfort and the security so the children have a sense of structure in or-

der for them to grow up into responsible adults,” said Yvonne Stigling fund development manager, SOS Children’s Villages. Manser has battled extreme cold while circumnavigating Iceland and Madagascar in a kayak, and cycled around Africa through conflict zones, alone and unaided. Now he tackles yet another challenge: filling hungry tummies. Manser’s Journey of Hope will span 4 100 km on a predetermined course across

the country. While this may seem easy compared with his previous expeditions, there is a catch: Manser will undertake the journey on a limited calorie intake. “I’m calling on everyone to help me save a few lives by the end of my journey. I will be highlighting the issue of hunger and showing people the impact that Add Hope makes and continues to make on children’s lives,” says Manser. Through the use of geo-tracking, this never before attempted journey will also be visible and traceable on satellite maps for fans to track. Customers and fans can get involved and help “feed” Manser emergency calories throughout his challenge by tweeting about the journey and using the hash tag #AddHope. Manser’s bike will have a donation collection vessel fastened to it. People who come into contact with him along his trip will be able to contribute their R2 into the box, thus also increasing his load while he rides. The adventurer will visit various KFC stores and several other Add Hope partner beneficiaries where he will be served the same meals as the children. “I’m looking forward to meeting the children and visitors and uncovering many of the stories of hope that the children have to tell,” says Manser. “Hunger is a major problem in our country, and if not addressed proactively will hamper our ability

Substance abuse stats implicate 7-year-olds JANA BEKKER

Figures on the treatment of alcohol abuse over a 12-month period indicates that 28 % of those treated by the national alcoholism council in the Western Cape were between the ages of seven and 17 years. Dr Andreas Plüddeman, chairperson of the South African National Council on Alcoholism (Sanca) in the Western Cape, who made this statement in his annual report, described the fact as a concerning trend. Plüddeman said Sanca, as well as the Medical Research Council statistics, indicate methamphetamine, commonly known as tik, as the most common choice of abuse. Dagga is the second most common. According to Plüddeman the proportion of heroin use remained stable compared with the previous year at seven percent. Plüddeman said dealing with clients dependant on methamphetamine is particularly challenging due to the mental health side effects, which includes psychosis. From April 2011 to March this year, Sanca’s most recent data collection period, they served over 1 700 clients, an 18 % increase in comparison with the previous year. Both Plüddeman and regional director of Sanca, Dr David Fourie, said in their reports that government subsidies have been insufficient to meet the growing needs and rising costs within the sector.
