FROM PAGE 1 “Durbanville needs to be declared a local disaster area,” he said. Roberts said Durbanville needs electronic monitoring of its exit points. “We need more cameras and help to install them. The police and law enforcement needs resources. The green belts need to be fenced off.” Subcouncil 7 (Koeberg) chairperson Gerhard Fourie said the Durbanville Camera Initiative is a good idea. “However, the city is not permitted to fence off public open spaces. We can identify hot spots and fence them off on the one side to prevent a thoroughfare, like with the R300 reserve adjacent to De Villiers Road,” said Fourie. “It is unbelievable what success was brought on by this. Another road where this could be successful is Giraffe Road and Goedemoed Street.” He said he has made provision in his ward contributions for fencing off Goedemoed Street during the new financial year. Plato said CCTV cameras can make a difference. “We plan to put up a number of CCTV cameras in areas such as the Cape Flats. They will be connected to the city’s CCTV camera network to help decrease the crime rate. These cameras must be of such a standard that registration numbers on vehicles and faces of people can be easily identified. “The Durbanville Camera Initiative is moving in the right direction. It will also help the police and courts with the identification of perpetrators. The quality must be good in order to stand as evidence in a court of law.”

At the meeting last Wednesday are, from left, Western Cape community safety minister Dan Plato, Dave Roberts from ESports, subouncil 7 chairperson Gerhard Fourie, Durbanville Community Police Forum chairperson Timothy Tomkyns and Kraaifontein cluster commander Brigadier Moses Mamela. PHOTO: ESME ERASMUS Plato said crime dropped by up to 60 % where cameras were installed. “In non-white areas,” he said, “where the community employed their own security guards, the crime rate is low. But, if it is so that security people are operating in Durbanville but the crime is still high, we need to investigate that issue.” Durbanville CPF chairperson Timothy Tomkyns said they need to address the real issue, “which is the fact that Durbanville policie is under-resourced”. “We need another police station. Neighbourhood watches cannot make arrests, but can only apprehend a suspect, but then it takes hours for the police to arrive to arrest the suspect. “The national prosecutor has a role, but

we need police officers. What happened to the police station planned for Kraaifontein North (in the police plans for the Kraaifontein cluster) and a satellite magistrate’s court?” he asked. “We also asked for four vehicles and ten police officers, but none of this is happening.” George Sieraha of the Durbanville Community Forum said “Durbanville has experienced large scale expansion and the time has arrived for more police stations.” Fourie added that 16 000 new housing units will be build in Fisantekraal over the next five to eight years. Mamela said the Kraaifontein cluster did not benefit from the November recruitment, but hopes to benefit from the next intake.
