message of hope to local business people for the recovery of business after Covid-19 has been shared by James Vos, City of Cape Town’s Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management.

Vos was the guest speaker at the first meeting of Durbanville Business since lockdown, which was held at Durbanville Hills Winery last Tuesday (20 October).

fer opportunities, he said at the meeting.

“I can honestly say that there has never been a better time to invest in Cape Town.

“Last year alone, R2.6 billion worth of investment was secured, 5 720 jobs were created and 2 048 people were trained by the City’s Special Business Partners (SBPs). This illustrates the power of partnerships between the City and the SBPs we fund.

“As a city, we focus our energy on attracting investment which creates jobs and leads to economic growth. It is vital that we implement plans that are proven to work,

which bring in investment, and develop the right skills pipelines for the high-growth sectors,” Vos said.

“Cape Town is fast becoming the call centre hub on the continent and supports almost 60 000 jobs. That is why the City provides funding to one of our Strategic Business Partners, CapeBPO, to upskill and place residents in this sector,” he said.

“Besides Amazon’s investment into data centres, they have also been expanding the call centre side of their business in Cape Town.

“Amazon’s web services are also to relocate to Cape Town and will have an employment benefit, he said.

City relaxes water tariffs A

fter various calls for the relief in water tariffs, the City of Cape Town announced that it will move to the lowest tariff, being the no restriction, waterwise tariff from 1 November.

In a statement, it reads the decision to lift water restrictions and lower water tariffs is based on the following three key considerations: . The national department of water and sanitation’s lifting of its restrictions applicable to the Western Cape water supply system of shared dams, of which Cape Town is one of the users. Overall, the province’s dam levels reached 100%. . City projections indicating dams are unlikely to drop below 50% by next winter. . City projections also indicating the latest anticipated water usage patterns for the coming summer will be sufficient .

Tariff drops explained The City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation, Xanthea Limberg, explained to TygerBurger what needs to be considered before a decision concerning tariff drops is made.

“Tariffs are set according to anticipated consumption levels rather than dam levels. When setting tariffs the City looks at how much is likely to be sold and sets the price per unit to cover costs of providing the service for the coming financial year.

“The City assures residents that we do not budget for a profit/surplus from the sale of water, and seeks to keep costs of service delivery as low as possible.

It should be kept in mind that the cost of the water only forms a portion of what it costs to operate the service.

“The total cost of running the water and sanitation service includes treatment, transporting of the water, maintenance, administration as well as cost flowing from upgrades to the system, which stay fairly similar no matter how much water is sold.

“The water and sanitation service comprises substantial infrastructure that needs to be operated and maintained; 11 500km water network, 9 500km sewer infrastructure, 490 wastewater pump stations and 23 wastewater treatment works.”

School hosts world-class sport C

urro Independent School in Durbanville presented world-class swimming clinics recently where learners got the chance to swim with some of our country’s aquatic champions.

The school also appointed former Protea and coach Eric Simons as coaching consultant to upskill the Curro group of schools’ cricket coaches.

Swimming Curro Durbanville Aquatics recently hosted a four-day professional training clinic with Rocco Meiring, head coach, at the High Performance Sports Centre at the University of Pretoria.

The clinic was the first of many to be held by the swimming coach at the local swim club to help club members and coaches benefit from his expertise.

During the clinic, the club’s swimmers trained alongside the Olympic qualifying breaststroke star Tatjana Schoenmaker, Ruan Ras (cancer-survivor and former SA Students competitor), Kristin Bellingan (a 2018 Commonwealth qualifier in the 400m and 800m freestyle), as well as Kiara Noades, a junior swimming champion.

Schoenmaker shared words of encouragement with the swimmers and provided some insights on her international swimming experience.

Cricket The appointment of Simons as cricket coaching consultant coincides with two new indoor cricketing facilities being opened at Curro schools.

Cricket players at Curro Hillcrest and Curro Durbanville will no longer be bound by the weather, seeing that these new indoor facilities include several bowling lanes, complete with gym facilities, as well as doctors and physio rooms.

The partnership sees Simons partaking in a coaching clinic tour planned for early next year, with two-day conferences scheduled for Curro schools across the country.

At the conferences Curro coaches will be exposed to the latest international coaching trends.

Curro will also be launching a new online sports library for coaches. Simons will use the knowledge gained on the nationwide tour of Curro schools to create several instructional videos and documents for Curro’s cricket coaches.

Support quadriplegic centre’s golf day A

R500 sponsorship per wet hole can give the annual golf day of Andries Olivier Durbanville Quadriplegic Centre on Friday 13 November at Durbanville Golf Club a much-needed boost.

With 31 fourballs entered and only five entries left, the organisers hope to make the day as special and pleasant as possible for the golfers.

“For a wet hole sponsorship, the sponsor can erect a gazebo and any advertising material, as well as serve drinks and snacks to our golfers.

“As we have virtually a full field, sponsors will be visible to in excess of 120 people,” says Rosabelle Riese, coordinator of the golf day. “We also have tables and chairs are available for hire.

“In addition, we humbly appeal to sponsors who are willing to provide or give a discount on snacks and drinks for our prize-

giving,” she said.

All their fundraising events this year have been derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the success of this golf day is important to raise the money needed to sustain the home, Riese says.

The centre is managed by 12 residents who have to raise the necessary funds to sustain it. The government subsidy covers only about 15% of their expenses, while the residents are responsible for the monthly shortfall of about R20 000.

All funds raised by the golf day will go towards this monthly shortfall.

Last year’s entry fee of R2 200 has been lowered to R2 000. The golf day will take place in the format of a 4BBB Stableford.

The tee-off is from 11:30.

Replacement bins ‘are not to be paid for’ THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo

esidents whose wheely bins have been damaged by garbage collectors will not be required to pay for replacements, Mayco Member for Water and Sanitation Xanthea Limberg said.

This follows a number of Northpine residents complaining over their damaged bins, allegedly caused by garbage collectors who do a rushed job while executing their duties.

Limberg further says residents will be required to pay for the replacement of the bins if it is found that the damage was wil-

fully caused by them.

“If bins are damaged, standard practice is that the residents report it via email along with their name and contact details, municipal account number as well as their residential address,” she explains.

In addition to this, those reporting the issue should state whether they are renting and, if so, include a letter of authority from the owner or managing agent.

“Residents will then be issued with a reference number and your new bin should be delivered within ten working days,” Limberg said. “The City will ensure waste is collected during the waiting period.”

If garbage collectors are found guilty of

deliberately damaging the bins, Limberg says the City’s standard disciplinary process will be followed.

Northpine resident Susan Solomons says garbage collectors she has interacted with have not shown any signs of aggres­sion and are usually friendly.

“They would sometimes come to collect bins unexpectedly,” she said, “and they would actually wait a few seconds more for someone to get their bin out if there was a request.”

Solomons says people often have their days when they are going through a lot, so it is understandable that they are not as friendly as they usually are.

“Human nature allows us to be anti-social at times, and it is understandable.”

TygerBurger made contact with two Northpine residents who have apparently had their bins damaged by garbage collectors and a meeting appointment was set up with one of them.

The other could not be reached on the number they provided.

The meeting with the former could not be held on the scheduled day, and requests to reschedule the appointment was declined.

Two years of ‘tiny owls’ celebrated ESMÉ ERASMUS

A

strong desire by a Durbanville couple to see children in need being placed in loving families – after having four of their own and adopting three more – led to the founding of the Tiny Owls Baby Home, a temporary safe home for abandoned babies in the Western Cape.

The story of the home began two years ago, on 15 October, when its founders Kim and Wayne Allen took a small baby boy into their arms and hearts.

This was the first baby they received after starting a home for babies at their home in Durbanville, converting their triple garage into a nursery. Within two months the nursery was filled to the maximum with six babies.

The four biological children of Kim, CEO of Tiny Owls, and Wayne, who works in financial administration and runs the NPO Chanan54, are 12, 14, 17 and 19 years old.

“We planned to have four children,” Kim said. “Around the time of our youngest child’s birth a close friend of ours adopted their first child. We were deeply impacted by this and felt God was moving on our hearts to adopt a child.

“When our young domestic worker’s sister and brother-in-law passed away and left two orphaned children behind she was overwhelmed, and not equipped to raise them.

We reached out to help her, and the children landed up staying with us, on and off, for about two years.

“The desire to adopt became stronger. After two years the social workers, who were assisting us in looking after the children, found the children’s paternal grandmother, who requested they live with her.

“A few days after the two children were sent back to their grandmother, the social worker contacted us to ask if we would be willing to adopt two baby boys.

“We were thrilled, for we knew the timing was right. Not even a week later our two beautiful boys came home. They are now 10 years old. A few years later we decided to

“After adopting our little girl we still desired strongly to see children in need being placed in loving families. We knew that as a family we were at full capacity, so decided to start the baby home to assist with the safety, care and adoption of vulnerable babies in need of care.”

The Allens have been vetted and trained by social workers to be temporary safetycare parents.

“We work directly with both private and state social workers, who contact us when a baby is in need of safety care,” Kim says on the Tiny Owls website. “The social workers are themselves notified of babies through various channels.

“Most of the babies we receive are either abandoned or relinquished due to extreme poverty, substance abuse or rape. They arrive generally no more than a few days old and stay for an average of six months.

“Due to their difficult start in life some babies have ailments or trauma, which require special medical attention.”

“One of our babies who was initially placed in the special-needs category (which reduces their chances of being placed) has been declared as no longer having special needs due to the therapy interventions.”

The Tiny Owls team is made up of nine women who work in two teams of three day staff and two night staff, all trained in child

care and emergency medical interventions.

They are also undergoing continuous job training.

“The dedication of our staff was clearly demonstrated during lockdown, when travel to work was impossible,” Kim said.

Two of the staff, who are sisters, moved into the baby home for those five weeks, taking turns to look after the babies. “They took breaks only to shower, sleep and eat,” said Kim. “It is rare to see such dedication anywhere.”

Over the last two years Tiny Owls Baby Home had 21 little bundles of joy in its loving care.

Of these, three were reunited with their families, one baby was placed with a foster family and 11 babies were adopted.

“Each baby’s placement into his or her family is beautiful to witness,” Kim pointed out. “Our favourite so far though was our first baby’s adoption placement. When he arrived at the baby home he had numerous special medical needs, including palsy in his one arm. He was unable to use the arm and the prognosis was not good.

“Through many hours of extra medical care and the staff’s dedication, he fully recovered. He was placed in a loving home in Norway, and is thriving. The staff also learnt with his placement how difficult it would be to say goodbye to a baby. Many of the staff cried for days after he left.”

City’s K-9 Unit receives boost The provincial department of community safety has contributed R2.5 m to the City of Cape Town’s metro police K-9 Unit.

Provincial minister Albert Fritz said the department also donated two vehicles to the dog unit.

It comprises 25 dogs and 23 handlers specially trained to assist law enforcement in detecting narcotics, explosives and missing persons.

“Our contribution in funds and donation of vehicles will support the unit in joint operations at weighbridges on provincial roads and identified hotspot areas,” he explained.

“Focus is placed mostly on national and provincial roads to curb transport of illicit drugs, ammunition and substances.”

Metro police’s K-9 Unit has been in operation for approximately 10 years.

It includes 12 dogs trained to detect narcotics, six to detect explosives and four missing people.

In a statement, the City’s Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith explained that over a 14-month period the unit had recovered 15 330 units of drugs.

“Our K9 Unit has really come a long way in its near eleven-year existence, and the value it adds cannot be underestimated.”

Addressing animal neglect by sterilisation D

espite many obstacles such as the Covid-19 pandemic and load shedding, Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has managed to sterilise more than 400 animals so far this year.

In the latest sterithon, on Thursday 15 October – with veterinarians doing compulsory community service (CCS) – a total of 26 dogs were sterilised.

According to Jenni Davies, spokesperson of FAW, the organisation focuses on sterilisations, as “the overpopulation of companion animals such as dogs and cats is the root cause of neglect.

“Especially now that so many people are losing their jobs and simply cannot afford to feed them, we have unprecedented numbers of people asking for food for their pets, or even surrendering their pets.

“FAW had planned the yearly total of sterilisations to be much higher, but Covid-19 and lockdown threw a spanner in the works.

“Between January and September, FAW sterilised 390 animals, even though we had lockdown and could not work for over a month, and then had load shedding too.

“We work only with volunteers, and have a couple of CCS vets. The group that did the

sterilisations for us included ‘our’ CCS vets and some others who are not usually working with us but decided to donate their time off to assist.”

Davies says there are many misconceptions around the reproduction and sterilisation of animals.

“Dogs generally go into season from around six months old (cats at around four months) and can get pregnant during their first season,” she said, “which can be detrimental to their health or they can even die.

“Dogs and cats can have babies from different fathers in one litter. Cats can even get pregnant while nursing a litter.

“Dogs have around two litters per year; cats have two to three litters. Dogs can have multiple pups per litter. We have had cases where dogs had up to 16 puppies at once. Cats usually have two to six kittens, sometimes more.

“If one imagines that each of those can go on to have more babies, and then these have their own, one can imagine why there is a problem with too many! There just aren’t enough good homes for so many animals.

“Breeding is not ‘fun’ for the animals. We often see females in season running desperately to escape all the males. It is even worse when people tie up their dogs, then the poor things can’t even get away.

“Males can get seriously injured as they can scent a female in season up to 5 km away and will do anything to get there – climbing walls, running into traffic and getting into fights with other dogs.

“An unspayed cat will end up in a constant cycle of going into heat, and this is horrible for her and the owners. Unsterilised cats spray, fight, yowl and become a nuisance.

“People think their dog or cat will be miserable if it is sterilised. Animals don’t need a ‘sex life’, and they won’t know any differently. They receive anaesthetics and pain medicine, so it doesn’t hurt them and they recover in no time at all.

“Their personality will not change, they will still be good watchdogs – in fact, they are often better watchdogs, because they’re not distracted. They will not become aggressive or get fat.

“Lastly, animals do not need to have one litter before they are sterilised. This myth has caused so much damage, and we wish

people could move on.

“It is an ‘old wives’ tale’ and leads to suffering.

“Except in a few exceptional cases, it is best to have them sterilised before their first season at around six months. This reduces chances of mammary cancer, prevents ovarian, uterine and testicular cancers and pyometra.”

Davies urged people to consider making a donation towards sterilisation of animals in impoverished areas.

“It costs a lot of money for medicine, equipment, oxygen, anaesthetic, electricity and petrol to fetch the animals, but sterilisation is the only way to stop the breeding cycle that result neglect and abuse.

City commences with roadworks in Brackenfell Construction at the Belami Drive and Magnifica Street intersection has been underway since the City of Cape Town’s transport directorate commenced with the task on Monday 19 October.

This is part of a road improvement project to upgrade this intersection from a stop street to a single-lane roundabout.

The City says construction will take place in a phased approach to minimise disruptions to traffic.

The construction takes place on weekdays between 08:00 and 17:00 and is expected to last for about eight weeks, depending on the weather.

The upgrading will improve the traffic flow in the area as the new roundabout will enable free-flowing movement on Belami Drive and accommodate the increase in traffic in a more structured system.

A new development will also have access from this circle.

“The Belami Drive road upgrade is an example of how we are continuously implementing solutions to improve our road network and accommodate new developments. “Apart from ensuring access to the development, the upgrade will also assist with traffic flow in this area in general,” mayco member for transport, Felicity Pur-

chase says.

Road users should note that changes have been implemented for the duration of the roadworks.

“Traffic on Belami Drive will be diverted from the existing lanes to the shoulders of the lanes.

“Through-traffic on Belami Drive will be controlled by a stop-and-go system allowing one direction of traffic at a time, for approximately one week during the project.”

Purchase further says that Magnifica Street to throughtraffic close to the intersection with Belami Drive will be closed for three weeks from Friday 13 November.

“Access will be provided from Cynaroides Avenue to the Capegate Lifestyle Centre and the Capegate Villas residential development.”

All other traffic will be diverted through Nitida and Cynaroides avenues.

Motorists are advised that work areas will be temporarily demarcated to regulate traffic flow.

“We do not expect congestion but I recommend that road users consider making use of alternative routes if possible as roadworks usually involve some level of inconvenience,” Purchase concludes.

Inperking vir Kersfees ons voorland Ek hoor onlangs iemand sê Kersfees moet ingeperk word.

Dit is as ’n grap bedoel, maar soos ons almal weet drup menige grap van ’n bietjie waarheid. Die stelling het my aan die dink gesit.

As iemand wat slaafs nuusgebeure volg, het ek gewoonlik darem ’n aanvoeling vir wat mag volg. Jy begin besef die gety is besig om te draai teen ’n spesifieke persoon in die nuus, of mense is besig om hul menings oor ’n sekere onderwerp te verander. Veral met sosiale media wat lopende kommentaar toelaat, kan ’n mens nogal redelik uitwerk waarheen dinge op pad is.

Maar ek is al baie verras met hoe dinge uitspeel. Met die Amerikaanse presidentsverkiesing vier jaar gelede het ek gedog dis onmoontlik dat ’n vulgêre, taktlose werklikheidster sal seëvier teen ’n beroepspolitikus.

Hier ter plaatse het ek ook nie gedink die ANC het die vermoë om van Nommer Een ontslae te raak nie.

Vroeër vanjaar het ek ook my eie idee gehad van hoe 2020 sou uitspeel – planne vir kreatiewe projekte en reis was in die vooruitsig. Ja, ek het die tekens gesien van wat in lande soos Italië en Amerika aangaan, soos die koronavirus sy pad oor die aardbol gevind het. Maar het ek verwag dat ek sewe maande later in ’n hoekie van my voorkamer sal sit en werk? Dat ek sommige dae onderwyser moes wees? Dat ek oral waar ek gaan moet seker maak ek het my masker, en dat handreinigingsmiddel ’n permanente deel van die inkopies gaan word?

Nee, ek het dit nie sien kom nie. Die tekens was daar, maar nooit het ek gedink dat Covid-19 ons lewens só drasties sal verander nie.

Die laaste ruk lees ek gereeld waarskuwings oor die “tweede vlaag” van die virus wat op pad is. Dat dit gevaarliker as die “eerste vlaag” gaan wees.

As jy vir TygerBurger werk, word daar van jou verwag om in die gemeenskappe te wees waaroor jy skryf – om ’n gevoel te kry van wat die hartklop van daardie gemeenskap is. Ek dek onder meer Eersterivier en Wesbank.

As ek net kyk na wat ek om my sien, dan is ek bekommerd. Nie net oor myself en my gesin nie, maar vir die gemeenskap. Dit is amper soos om ’n ongeluk te sien gebeur, maar jy kan nie wegkyk of dit verhoed nie. Dis amper asof alles in stadige aksie afspeel: mense wat sonder maskers aan by winkels gehelp word; groot samekomste sonder enige gesonde afstand tussen die mense; die polisie wat kla dat daar meer dronk mense op straat is, ten spyte daarvan dat hulle nie oor naweke drank mag koop nie; skoolkinders sonder maskers wat in groot groepe saambeweeg; lang rye by winkels; taxi’s wat oorlaai is.

Dit wil voorkom asof mense meen vlak een van inperking beteken die virus is ook op vlak een. Al wat vlak een beteken is dat sekere inperkings verslap is om die ekonomie van die land weer aan die gang te kry, nie dat die virus, om Donald Trump aan te haal, "wonderbaarlik gaan verdwyn” nie.

Kattekwaad lei tot erge buretwis Die artikel “Cats poisoned” (TygerBurger 14 Oktober) verwys.

Die onlangse vergiftiging van katte is onrusbarend, wreed en onaanvaarbaar.

Die vergiftiging van honde kan verstaan word, waar misdadigers ’n huis teiken en ’n hond in hul pad is. Die tergende vraag is waarom iemand katte sou vergiftig?

Die debat rondom die vraag het verskeie uitgangspunte, maar verskeie nuut gepubliseerde wetenskaplike studies van huiskatte en hul gedrag bring ons by die werklikheid: As ons nie nou aandag aan die uitdaging gee nie, sal vergiftiging bly voorkom.

As vertrekpunt sou dit wys wees om na die Stad Kaapstad se verordening (2010) te kyk wat die aanhou van diere reguleer. Dis duidelik dat die verantwoordelikheid en aanspreeklikheid by die aanhou van honde en katte verskil. In kort, ’n hondeienaar is wetlik verplig om sy hond binne sy erf te hou.

Sodra hy openbare eiendom betree, moet dit onder die beheer van sy eienaar wees en aan ’n leiband wees. ’n Hondeienaar is verantwoordelik vir sy hond se gedrag en kan aanspreeklik gehou word vir die “skade” wat sy hond mag aanrig. ’n Kateienaar aan die ander kant het geen verantwoordelikheid om sy kat tot sy erf te beperk nie. ’n Kat hoef ook nie onder beheer van sy eienaar te wees as hy openbare eiendom betree nie en soos dit tans staan, is ’n kateienaar ook nie verantwoordelik vir die “skade” wat sy kat aanrig nie, mits binne ’n siviele regsgeding.

Katte en honde is nie dieselfde nie, en daarom kan geredeneer word waarom daar ’n verskil is in eienaars se verantwoordelikheid. Katte vang muise en rotte en hou ’n pesbeheervoordeel in. Verkeerd. Die jongste navorsing wys katte sal ’n muis per

geleentheid vang, maar vir rotte is hulle maar skrikkerig, terwyl ander inheemse spesies deurloop en gevolglik is katte verantwoordelik vir grootskaalse omgewingskade.

Die impak van huiskatte op verkleurmannetjies, akkedisse en tuinvoëls, is angswekkend.

Die omgewingsimpak van katte bring ’n nuwe dimensie tot die debat, wat ons opnuut dwing om te kyk na verantwoordelike kateienaarskap binne die raamwerk van die wet.

Het jy al blomme in jou beddings geplant en met katmis in aanraking gekom en die stank daarvan verduur? Het jy al op ’n warm somersnag wakker geword van ’n mannetjieskat wat deur jou venster gekom het en jou huis en gordyne besproei het en jy nie van die reuk ontslae kan raak nie?

Het jy ’n voëlvoerder in jou tuin en telkemale sien jy hoe ’n kat jou tuinvoëls wat jy voer, vang. As die voorgenoemde vir jou bekend klink en jy nie eens die eienaar van ’n kat is nie, is dit hier waar kattekwaad kan lei tot buretwis. As ’n mens dan die kat kan identifiseer en weet wie die eienaar is, en die eienaar nader, is die reaksie gewoonlik een van die volgende: Jammer, maar dis nie moontlik om my kat net in die huis te hou nie; jy weet hulle loop rond, veral in die nag. Meneer, plaas jou voëlvoerder só dat my kat dit nie kan bereik nie. Die werklikheid is dat kateienaars verwag dat jy op jou erf op jou koste voorsiening moet maak om hul katte van jou erf te hou. Niemand se vryheid kan so ver strek dat dit ’n ander se vryheid oorskry of inperk nie. So dis hier waar mense uit radeloosheid hulle wend tot metodes wat onaanvaarbaar en wreed is, en dis nie die kat se skuld nie.

Gekyk na gepubliseerde navorsing is ’n huiskat niks

anders as ’n miniatuur mak “leeu” nie. Die katte wat in navorsing gemonitor is, is goed versorg en gevoed, maar hul instinktiewe gedrag, spesifiek om te “jag”, het nou ’n omgewingsrisiko vir ander inheemse diere geword.

Wetenskaplik, as gekyk word na ’n huiskat, is dit nie ’n inheemse spesie nie en kan katte werklik geklassifiseer word as ’n “wilde dier”, want dit is die gedrag wat hulle natuurlik openbaar en hulle ’n kat maak. In vergelyking met ander wilde diere kan ’n mens redeneer dat jy ’n permit moet hê om ’n kat te kan aanhou as gevolg van die “wilde” natuur. Die instink om te jag, het niks te doen met “honger” nie, maar is eie aan hul gedrag.

As ’n gedeelte van die oplossing sou die eerste vertrekpunt wees om die munisipale verordening te wysig en meer verantwoordelike en aanspreeklike kateienaarskap te inkorporeer.

Kateienaars, net soos hondeienaars, moet verplig word om hul katte te beperk tot hul eienaars se eiendom.

As ’n kateienaar nou sou redeneer dat dit te veel sou kos om dit te doen en onprakties is, jammer. Hondeienaars moes nog altyd die verantwoordelikheid en gepaardgaande koste dra. So as jy dit nie kan bybring nie, kan jy ongelukkig nie ’n kat aanhou nie.

Die tyd het gekom om kateienaarskap in heroorweging te bring. Birdlife SA is tans besig om sy beleid rondom huiskatte as gevolg van hul omgewingsimpak te hersien. Ek het ’n skrywe aan ons DA-verteenwoordiger, Marian Nieuwoudt, gerig in die verband, om te verneem wat die proses is wat gevolg moet word om die wysiging van ’n verordening te versoek, maar het nog geen antwoord gekry nie.

24th outage completed at Koeberg T

he 24th outage of Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station was completed on Wednesday, 21 October.

In a statement, Eskom explained the unit is currently synchronised onto the grid and will load up to full capacity by this week.

“This will give Eskom a reliable electricity output of approximately 900MW for close on 400 days, helping ease the supply constraints on the rest of the power station fleet.

Unit 1 continues to operate as normal at full

capacity, and is scheduled for a refuelling and maintenance outage starting in February 2021.

The outage at Unit 2 – the 24th since it first started to generate electricity – was also a planned and regular refuelling outage, where the nuclear fuel in the reactor core was replaced with new fuel.

During operations like these, all the nuclear fuel is removed from the core, the reactor cavity is drained and cleaned whereafter it

is refilled before the fuel is placed into the core.

Eskom further explained that during the outage, routine maintenance was performed on the plant to keep the station performing safely and optimally.

“While many maintenance activities can be performed without switching off the station, there are some more intrusive activities that can only be performed when the unit is shut down.”

Koeberg staff performed the refuelling and maintenance, with the assistance of 32 international specialists required to safely perform some specialist and very focused maintenance tasks.

“These crews arrived in South Africa starting on 31 July, and followed all the Covid-19 protocols, including Covid-19 screening and testing, and quarantine.

“The outage began on 11 August,” Eskom explained in its statement.

Aansoekers moet daarvan kennis neem dat die departement ten doel het om sy opbrengs op investering (ROI) te maksimiseer deur ’n kollaboratiewe befondsingsmodel wat ’n vaardigheidsoordragkomponent en projekuitsette in pas met die GOP en sakedoelwittte insluit.

Voorstelle vir hulptoelae moet skriftelik ingedien word op ’n amptelike aansoekvorm wat beskikbaar is by alle subraadskantore of aanlyn by www.capetown.gov.za/grants-in-aid.

Projekvoorstelle moet tot munisipale verantwoordelikhede beperk wees en die strategiese doelwitte van die Stad, soos in die GOP, die strategie vir ekonomiese groei en die strategie vir maatskaplike ontwikkeling uiteengesit, bevorder, en moet ook die Stad se pogings om ’n geleentheidstad, ’n veilige stad, ’n omgeestad, ’n inklusiewe stad en ’n goed bestuurde stad te bou, ondersteun. By die opstel van hul begroting moet aansoekers kennis neem van die hulptoelaebeleid wat op versoek of op die Stad se webwerf beskikbaar is. ’n Bedrag van R14 108 865 is vir toewysing beskikbaar. Die minimum bedrag per aansoek per projek is R15 000. Aansoekers moet realisties wees wanneer voorstelle opgestel word aangesien fondse beperk is. Nie alle aansoekers sal befondsing ontvang nie en die Stad kan besluit om voorstelle gedeeltelik en nie in geheel nie, te befonds.

Alle aansoeke moet vergesel wees van: • ’n Afskrif van die jongste, geouditeerde finansiële state of ouditsertifikaat indien daar in vorige boekjare toelaefinansiering van die Stad ontvang is. Die bedrag van die toelae ontvang, moet aangedui word. Indien die bedrag van die toelae voorheen ontvang R50 000 of minder per projek was, hoef slegs ’n afskrif van die finale uitgaweverslag van die vorige jaar aangeheg te word.

“T

he lack of lifeguards at most beaches is posing a danger to residents and more needs to be done.”

These are the words of a concerned resident after the recent drowning of a 13-yearold boy at Lagoon Beach in Milnerton.

According to the resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, there are no public swimming pools from the N1 to Sunningdale to use, only beaches.

“Where must people go other than the beach?” she asks. “Pressure needs to be put on the City of Cape Town, explaining why there is a shortage of lifeguards on beaches.

Lifeguards should be deployed to every beach, especially now with the holiday and summer season. Last year lifeguards were employed in September already.”

Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, says the City plans lifeguard deployment for the coastline annually in line with the school holiday dates. “The City, therefore, is currently in the process of recruiting, vetting and training lifeguards and the intention is that they will be deployed from 23 October at certain beaches and tidal pools around the City, based on the drowning prevention plan. This coverage will be daily, from 10:00 until 18:00, until 12 April 2021,” he said.

However, residents in Sunset Beach and Bloubergstrand claim lifeguards are not visible at the beaches.

“We can only visit beaches and have no access to public swimming pools in our area,” Jacques de Villiers says. “Over the years, there have been countless drownings in the area with only the National Sea Rescue Institute assisting beachgoers and paddlers.”

The City says it will invest approximately R48 million in lifeguard salaries and a further R300 000 on specialised PPE and Covid19 related training, as part of its drowning prevention project this year.

“Lifeguards are also supported by a city drowning prevention team, which works very closely with safety and security, the NSRI and Lifesaving Cape Town,” Badroodien added. “Approximately 330 seasonal beach lifeguards and 290 municipal pool lifeguards have been appointed. Lifeguards will be stationed at 26 bathing areas between 10:00 and 18:00 daily, until 12 April 2021. The City urges visitors to the beach to swim only where and when lifeguards are

on duty, between their red and yellow flags designating safe bathing areas.

The City will deploy lifeguards at Silwerstroomstrand (bathing area and tidal pool to be covered by lifeguards), Melkbosstrand Main Beach, Big Bay, Milnerton Lighthouse Table View (lifeguards will be stationed here from November onwards) and Milnerton Lagoon Beach. Table View and Lagoon Beach are patrol areas for lifeguards only, as there are identified hotspots for water emergencies.

TygerBurger asked the City the plans in place to open public swimming pools in the Milnerton and Table View areas. The City says there is an infrastructure investment plan which highlights the need to upgrade existing infrastructure, among other key interventions. “The infrastructure referred to is intended to accommodate all major sporting activities, including new recreation and parks facilities within approved sporting precincts. Spatially, these precincts are located across the entire metro.

There are currently no new swimming pools in this plan, as there are already swimming pools within these sporting precincts. Additionally, the City unfortunately has a vast number of needs and backlogs.

As a result, the department has had to prioritise investments,” Badroodien says.

The City says lifeguard recruitment and placement is only one element of a comprehensive drowning prevention project that the recreation and parks department rolls out during the summer season. “This is intended to raise awareness and educate the public about water safety. There is a Summer Safety Campaign that the department runs annually from 1 December. During the school holidays, the department runs educational programmes about water safety for children at the City’s recreation hubs.

Learn-to-swim programmes are also offered at municipal pools by swimming clubs affiliated with Cape Town Metro Aquatics.

It is anticipated that the programmes will resume once clubs start training at facilities in November,” Badroodien explains.

Other educational programmes the City has in place includes its drowning prevention awareness officers and its Beach Buddies Programme.

Badroodien adds, “The department is in the process of recruiting 70 employees as Beach Buddies working to promote awareness, vigilance, environmental education and aid in monitoring visitors to beaches from 1 December 2020 – 30 April 2021.”

lobal Handwashing Day was celebrated recently and, according to medical practitioners, the regular practice of washing hands is an important way to help prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

By doing so everyone protects themselves and their loved ones, says Dr Nosi Kalawe, who forms part of the Northern Tygerberg Covid-19 response team.

She says everyone should stick to the rule of washing hands regularly, wearing masks and practising social distancing.

“If you suspect you have been infected you should quarantine as soon as possible.”

It is also important that people also avoid as much as possible super-spreader settings, such as crowded places, confined spaces and close contact with others. Ka-

lawe points out that hands are one of the main means by which germs are spread, and shared some useful tips on keeping safe: . Open the tap and wet your hands, after which you rub soap from palm to palm. . The right palm washes the back of the left hand, and the left palm washes the back of the right, fingers interlaced. . Wash your hands again palm to palm, fingers interlaced. . Wash your knuckles over the opposing palms, and do the same on the other side, fingers interlocked. . Wash your left thumb in rotational movements, and do the same on the other thumb. . Clasp the fingers and rub the tips circularly over the opposite palm. . Rub each of the wrists with a hand, rinse and wipe your hands.

New mobile appointment service Residents in the Northern and Tygerberg communities now have access to a mobile appointment service for day hospitals.

A statement by the provincial department of health explains that the service allows residents to easily make an appointment from home when they need to vi­sit the health facility by either sending a Please Call Me, calling the number, or sending an SMS or WhatsApp message.

“Usually, people who need health care and do not have an appointment, would arrive at the clinic and will have to wait to be assisted.

“With the new system, they can avoid long queues and waiting times by booking an appointment from home.

“They will be offered a date and time at their clinic and only have to wait 15 to 30 minutes before their appointment,” it reads.

Valhalla Park resident Xandile Xabela says he is pleased with the new appointment service.

He used the service to make an appointment at the Bishop Lavis Community Day Centre.

“I like the service very much. It was easy

and convenient to make my appointment.”

Administration clerk Nazeera Vlotman has been working at the Bishop Lavis CDC for more than 10 years and has welcomed the implementation of the new service.

“The service has been going well so far.

Previously patients without appointments would wait really long to see a clinician.

“The new appointment line allows them to make an appointment and visit us later in the day, for instance, they can be booked for 14:00 and arrive 30 minutes before their appointment instead of sitting at the facility from 07:00 in the morning to get help.”

Cansa: high time for high tea NETTALIE VILJOEN

reast cancer is the number one cancer affecting women in South Africa, according to the National Cancer Registry (NCR) 2016. “That is why it is so important that we take care of ourselves,” says Cara Noble, the national relationship manager for The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

It is recommended that women aged 25 to 39 years go for a clinical breast exam every one to three years. Women aged 40 years and older, should have an exam done every year and women 55 years and older should change to every two years. However, Noble says a lot can happen in between exams. She says it is vitally important that women get into the habit of examining their breasts regularly.

“By the time a woman’s partner finds something, it has usually

been there for months. Women need to become familiar with their bodies. If you have breasts, examine them monthly. It is best to pick it up early and get a better outcome.”

Noble is one of four women who will form part of a panel discussion during both an S-Connect Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness webinar on Friday 30 October and at an afternoon high tea at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town on Sunday 1 November. Luzelle Yon Lestrade, a breast cancer survivor and internationally certified John Maxwell coach and speaker; Ariella Kuper, a two-time breast cancer survivor and South Africa’s leading female auctioneer; and Dr Windy Dean-Colomb, a medical oncologist and internal medicine and medical oncology board-certified practitioner are the other speakers who will discuss and provide insight on topics such as early detec-

tion and preventative measures.

The campaign, organised by S-Connect Women, a business networking hub to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aims to provide a beacon of hope to many women undergoing treatment. All proceeds raised will go to Cansa.

With so many fundraising events cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown, Cansa has faced a significant funding shortfall these past months. In the middle of lockdown, it had to go through a restructuring and retrenchment process.

Noble says they had to focus on keeping their 12 care homes afloat.

Among its many services, Cansa provides home-from-home accommodation to patients undergoing cancer treatment at oncology clinics far from their homes.

Guests at the care homes located

in the main metropolitan areas across the country stay for an average of six weeks and receive meals and transport to and from treatment centres. With Cansa named an essential service, all of these care homes stayed open throughout lockdown. Noble explains, seeing that the immune systems of patients undergoing oncology treatment are compromised, the standard of care and nourishment provided at these care homes needed to remain at the highest level.

“Our staff sacrificed a lot. They didn’t go home Easter time. They didn’t leave the facility. They were so scared that if they were to go home to their families that they might be exposed to the virus and bring it back to work with them.

They went to the ends of the Earth for our patients. I am so proud of them,” she adds.

She says fundraising events like these held by S-Connect are a bless-

ing to get Cansa’s services up and going.

“We are getting back on our feet, slowly and surely. Next year will be our 90th year of existence and we will be coming back with a bang and doing even more for our patients and their families,” Noble says.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Afternoon High Tea will be MC’d by television and radio presenter Zoë Brown. Scar Hair Salon will provide a pop-up Hair Salon for guests to cut and colour their hair pink, nail technicians will paint nails pink, and Cansa will provide a help desk. Practise water safety at beaches KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels With the school holidays in full swing this week, many are rushing to beaches to enjoy the swimming season.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is encouraging the public to adopt a water safety mindset around coastal and inland waters.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the institute’s number one rule for a safe experience at the beach is to choose one that has lifeguards on duty and swim between their flags. “If you do that, you don’t need to worry about rip currents, or suddenly getting out of your depth,” he said. “Putting an arm in the air and waving for help will get a rapid response from the lifeguards on duty.

“Unfortunately, for various reasons, people regularly swim where there are no lifeguards on duty. This may be on a beach before or after the lifeguard’s duty for the day or at a beach that does not have lifeguards.

This is when things can go wrong.”

The NSRI says the public should have a plan in place in the event of an emergency to prevent panic.

“Make sure you have emergency numbers that you may need saved on your cellphone,” Lambinon said.

“Dial 112 from any cellphone in any emergency. Or, simply Google Sea Rescue or NSRI for the closest sea rescue station’s telephone number. Check the wind, weather and tides before going to the beach, fishing or boating.”

According to the NSRI, it is important to tell someone where one is going and when one is due back, and to ensure sure the institute knows one’s route.

The NSRI pointed out the following water safety tips to bear in mind this summer: . Swim at beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty. . Swim between the lifeguard flags. . Don’t drink alcohol, and then swim. . Don’t swim alone. Always swim with a buddy. . Adult supervision and barriers to water

are vital. Adults who are supervising children in or near water must be able to swim. . Know how to survive rip currents. . Don’t attempt a rescue yourself. Call a lifeguard or the NSRI by dialling 112 and call the NSRI’s emergency operations centre on 087 094 9774 from your cellphone for help. . Watch children who are using floating objects, toys or tire tubes at the beach or on dams very carefully. . Drowning is silent. Watch children when they are in or near water. Do not be distracted by your cellphone or social media while looking after children in or near water. You need to focus on them and nothing else. . Learn how to do CPR. Have the emergency numbers saved in your phone.

The NSRI appealed to boaters, paddlers and sailors to wear bright neon clothing when they launch onto water.

“Have your name, contact telephone numbers for yourself and a responsible family member stencilled on your craft,” Lambinon says.

The City of Cape Town is awaiting applications for grant-in-aid funding from registered organisations working with vulnerable groups, which complements the objectives of the City’s social development and early childhood development (ECD) departments.

The funding is available to qualifying organisations who work within youth development and education, ECD, gender-based violence, persons with disabilities, LGBTQQIA+, and street people.

Earlier, the City signed memoranda of agreement with several organisations in the same sectors to provide humanitarian relief and services through the disbursement of R20m in grant-in-aid funding for a six-month period until the end of the year.

Organisations wishing to apply for the new funding of more than R14m that is being made available must outline exactly which projects they require funding for and must submit a business plan and supporting documentation, in line with the City’s policy.

“We call on applicants to be as detailed as possible in their applications. Funding is limited and not everyone may qualify or receive funding in full. Often, organisations are disqualified because they do not have the necessary documentation like audited financial statements or a tax clearance certificate,” said the City’s Mayco member for Community Services and Health Zahid Badroodien.

All applications must be accompanied by: . A copy of the latest, audited financial statements or audit certificate if grant funding was received from the City in previous financial years. . A copy of the organisation’s constitution and a copy of the organisation’s latest municipal rates and services accounts (if applicable). . A zero-rated VAT invoice if confirmed as a VAT vendor. . Valid tax clearance certificate. . Date of establishment of organisation. . Type of organisation (NPO, Section 21 company). . Details of previous funding by the City. . Details of other funding received from the City for the current financial year. . Detailed description of project to be implemented. . Amber September (32) en Daniel Kepkey (28) is albei werkloos en het maande lank in ’n informele skuiling in Kuilsrivier gewoon.

Reeds voor die inperking was die twee gereelde besoekers by die voedingsprogram wat Dawn Roode van haar huis in Brantwood bedryf. Roode sê vir die eerste 150 dae van die inperking het hulle sewe dae per week kos gegee aan sowat 150 mense.

Tans is dit vyf dae per week en die mense kom in kleiner groepies deur die loop van die dag sodat daar nooit lang rye staan nie.

Dit gaan nie net oor kos gee nie, maar ook om holisties te probeer help en mense te bemagtig, sê sy. “Ek bied ’n program oor selfontdekking aan.”

Toe Amber onlangs die nuus met haar deel dat sy en Daniel ’n datum het om by die departement binnelandse sake in Bellville te trou, het Roode uitgereik na haar kontakte.

Binne dae is alles gereël vir die spesiale dag. Roode sê die Here het hulle so geseën dat daar uiteindelik omtrent dubbeld van alles was – twee rokke vir die bruid, twee ruikers en twee troukoeke!

Terwyl die paar Dinsdagoggend 20 Oktober by die departement binnelandse sake getroud is, het Roode en ’n hele span helpers alles gereed gekry vir die onthaal by haar huis. Die bruid het van uitrustings verwissel en die pasgetroudes is vrolik toegejuig toe hulle uit die huis gestap gekom het.

Mense van die voedingsprogram kon deel in die ete wat onder meer gebraaide hoender en poeding ingesluit het.

Roode het in haar toespraak by die onthaal almal bedank wat gehelp en bydraes gemaak het – ook haar man, Patrick, wat verstaan dat gemeenskapswerk nie kantoorure het nie. “Ons kan nie die hele Suid-Afrika red nie, maar ons kan ten minste ’n goeie fondament lê by een persoon of paartjie.”

Sy het gesê Daniel en Amber se woorde aan haar, ‘‘we want to pay it forward”, gee haar hart woema. Amber het ook vir haar gesê sy wil graag matriek klaarmaak.

Roode het gesê die aand voor die troue is daar ná 21:00 nog voorhuwelikse berading ook ingepas.

Daniel se pa, Edward Kepkey, en Amber se ma, Mandy September, was ook aanwesig.

baie dankbaar vir wat vir hul kinders gedoen is. Die bruid het die bruidegom voorgespring vir ’n spreekbeurt om dankie te sê.

Daniel en Amber het mekaar bietjie meer as ’n jaar gelede in Bishop Lavis ontmoet waar Daniel toe in n supermark gewerk het.

Amber sê sy het daar gewoon en elke dag winkel toe geloop vir ander mense om geld te verdien.

Die liefde het geblom en die twee was sedertdien onafskeidbaar.

Daniel het gesê hulle het nie die troudagviering verwag nie. ‘‘Ons het gedink dit gaan net ons twee wees,” het hy gesê.

“Ons kom mos al lank aan met aunty Dawn, so toe gee ons haar die goeie nuus (van ’n troudatum by binnelandse sake) en dis hoe …”, het Amber als verklaar.

Vir die pasgetroudes se wittebrood is gereël dat hulle die eerste aand as egpaar in ’n hotel in Parow kon oornag. Albei was baie opgewonde oor die vooruitsig en het gesê nie een van hulle het al ooit voorheen in ’n hotel oornag nie. “Oo, ek kan nie wag nie, kan dit nie nou gou aand raak nie?” het Daniel gevra.

Roode het later vertel die twee kan nie uitgepraat raak oor hul troudag en die hotel-ervaring nie. “Daniel en Amber kon nie genoeg dankie sê vir almal wat deel was van alles en hul dag so heuglik gemaak het nie.”

Roode sê daar is ’n paar moontlikhede wat werk betref en albei se CV’s moet nou agtermekaar gekry word om in te dien.

Dan moet hulle ook kyk of hulle ’n stukkie grond in ’n agterplaas of iewers kan kry sodat Quinton Adams (The Shackbuilder) vir die paartjie ’n stewige houthuisie (“shack”) kan bou soos wat hy onderneem het by die bruilof.

lmost three years ago Laetitia Genis of Kraaifontein received a Facebook post of a puppy, then called Leela, up for adoption from the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha. The puppy was blind in one eye and had a deformed face. Laetitia says as her daughter’s name is Leela, she saw it as a bit of a sign.

The veterinarians at the clinic believed the puppy chewed on a live wire, she explained. The previous owner had left the injury without treatment for too long.

The infection had spread to her eye, into her gums and some of her teeth.

“She can’t see out of her one eye and has some scarring. Only about half her tongue is there.”

The family named her Eyevy, because of her special eye. “It’s so nice to come home, and someone is so excited and wants to be all around you.”

Genis says Eyevy also taught Leela (3) about sharing and patience. “She is an allround loving and happy dog. She brings this atmosphere of constant love into the house.”

At Mdzananda Eyevy’s face was stitched up repeatedly until it eventually started to heal.

“Even though she was in pain, Eyevy was the happiest puppy we’d met, always offering licks, skew faced smiles and tail wags,” says Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising Manager of the clinic. She needed a very special home and found it with the Genis-family in Kraaifontein.

Genis and Eyevy recently became patrons of Mdzananda and appear in a video to appeal for support for the clinic.

Genis says she has seen how much the staff cares for the animals. With an estimated 130 000 animals in Khayelitsha there is a dire need. “The clinic’s services are essential to help the pets of Khayelitsha, but the clinic has been hit hard by the pandemic. It lost significant funding, had increased expenses and was robbed three times during lockdown,” she said.

“The really scary part is the impact it’s had on our individual donors,” says Du Plessis. “People have started cancelling their monthly debit orders, many of which bounced in difficult times. This income is our organisation’s lifeblood.

We’re also concerned that corporates won’t donate in future due to the economic impact.”

The clinic recently launched its “Become a #PawMember” campaign, with a view to signing up 1 000 people to donate R100 per month. “If we can have 1 000 people signing up, our deficit will be covered,” says Du Plessis.

Genis says her family adopted another dog, “Mia, a little white mongrel who is deaf” from Mdzananda. “Not a lot of people want to take a dog that has a disability or disfigurement, but we find the ones that need a little extra love always give a little more love.”

A mother whose late daughter was diabetic is hosting a virtual walk in honour of her and to raise awareness of the illness.

After Anthea Usher’s daughter Caylee died she organised the first event last year, which she couldn’t repeat this year because of Covid-19. “This year, due to Covid-19, I am arranging a virtual walk, because even though our government has now increased the number of people allowed at outdoor events I don’t have enough time to prepare for the type of event we had last year.

“With the virtual walk people can walk their 5 km anywhere they want to, and share their photos on the Facebook page I created for Caylee.

According to Usher, people who participate in the walk should support all who live with diabetes as well as those who have lost family and friends to diabetes.

The walk will take place on 14 November.

ArtsAbility festival online The ArtsAbility Festival, presented annually by Unmute Dance Company, is an inclusive arts festival for both disabled and able-bodied artists and performers.

This year the festival moves online offering a free virtual experience from Tuesday 3 November until Thursday 3 December.

It pays tribute to the International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD), which is celebrated in December.

Under the overarching theme “Spaces and Homes Invasion Festival of Transmission (Shift) Online” it is using the virtual space to increase the usually six-day event to a month-long online festival.

“The theme is striving to return to the core value of the original focus of taking inclu- ArtsAbility’s sivity in the arts to community spaces and people, says Nadine McKenzie, Unmute artistic director. “This year, with the virtual innova­tion, Unmute has taken the opportunity presented by a month-long event to incorporate many more artists and performances.”

She says the festival’s objectives are three-fold. Firstly, to provide exposure for young inclusive artists who are already producing works in communities.

Then, to provide a platform for collaborative works between South African, African and global inclusive artists.

Lastly, to provide learning opportunities through the Access Lecture, Inclusive Webinars, Sign Language lessons, Integrated Dance workshop programmes.

The golden thread running through

focus is on inclusivity.

ArtsAbility 2020 is Unmute’s vision of inclusivity, accessibility and integration.

One of the highlights is Access Denied; a video presentation where three artists from Unmute Dance Theatre explores the different accessibility challenges these artists deal with daily.

Through their art, the artists interrogate the discrimina­tions they experience.

To create clarity for the viewers, ArtsAbility 2020 has been divided into daily subthemes.

Each day will offer a different performance or learning opportunity, with some performances only online for 24 hours.

Enter filmmaking competition Applications for South Africa’s first-ever online mobile phone movie making film festival are now open – and as the name suggests, anyone using a smartphone, tablet, drone or action camera can enter.

The Mobile Moviemakers Film Festival Cape Town by MMOCA was devised as a way to empower any person with a smart recording device to tell the untold stories.

MMOCA is an initiative by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa and is powered by the Belgian Consulate in Cape Town, Flanders, Wallonia-Bruxelles International, Flemish Investment and Trade organisation as well as the Wallonia Trade & Investment organisation.

The inspiration behind the mobile festival stems from a need for change.

While traditional filmmaking emphasises the big, latest technology cameras and sound equipment, this festival hopes to reach a much bigger group of aspiring filmmakers.

“It’s all about storytelling and not the size of your camera,” explains festival director, Dominique Vandenhoudt.

Entry into the competition is R100, but students gain free entry.

Entries include documentary, fiction or advertisement and close on Friday 13 November.

Winners will receive a production grant of R10 000 and a jury-prize of R5 000.

The festival will end off with a Red Carpet-style awards night at the Belgian House in Cape Town.

We have resumed recruitment of participants for a study on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and the brain.

This study investigates how the brains of people with OCD work in comparison to the brains of healthy individuals. It also looks at response to medication in a subset of people with OCD. Baseball unions plan for a safe return EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt

s the Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays continue their battle for the Commissioner’s Trophy across the Atlantic Ocean in Texas, plans are afoot locally to pave the way for a safe return to baseball activity.

Following extensive meetings by the South African Baseball Union (Sabu) and its constituents last week, the Cape Town Baseball Federation (CTBF) held its annual general meeting (AGM) on Sunday 18 October in Claremont to discuss the way forward after studying Sabu’s recommendations.

In a letter addressed to provincial and district federations, the South African Baseball Union outlined a three-phase approach to the resumption of activities under the national lockdown level one.

They are: . The preparation of baseball facilities.

This excludes any playing activity. . The start-up of baseball activities, which includes practising, but no matches or competition. . The return to full activity.

“Provincial and district federations and clubs are hereby authorised to gain/request access to baseball facilities under SA Baseball phase one – preparation of baseball activities providing that any local regulations are complied with,” said Sabu president Marc Moreau.

“The main objectives of South African Baseball Union under the three-phase approach is to comply with any national, provincial and local health and safety regulations and rules as well as any additional measures required to ensure the safety and well being of all baseball activities and stakeholders.”

As a result, the CTBF has instructed clubs to prepare their facilities with a deadline of Sunday 31 October set for clubs to inform CTBF of their readiness to be inspected.

Further to that, a newly established CTBF task team will meet with Sabu to discuss the recommendations for the second phase of a return to action, according to CTBF public relations officer Deidré Marquard, who adds that CTBF has provided clubs with a 32-page document with guidelines for them to adhere to before moving onto the next phase.

The guidelines include the establishment of a compliance officer by every club, the screening and testing of players and officials as well as the keeping of a health protocol register. Once clubs are given the go-ahead to return to training, clubs are advised to conduct staggered training sessions in order to limit the number of players on the field at any time and that a maximum of two teams can occupy a single field where a 100m² field can be divided into two training areas.

All equipment, whether they share or privately owned, must be sanitised between uses and while no spectators are permitted

at any senior matches or training, parents of players in junior teams will have to abide

by Covid-19 protocols when in attendance and players are encouraged not to use change rooms. All should adhere to physical distancing and adopt the principle: “Get in, train, get out”.

Power Series continues to thrill at Killarney Killarney International Raceway’s motorsport fans, globally watching the event via live stream, were treated to a glimpse of what international sports and GT class racing is like at Round 5 of the Power Series on Saturday 24 October, in the headline Ons Huisie 100, over 31 laps or 101.27km.

To the surprise of many, what was expected to be something of a tactical contest with slick fuel stops and driver changes turned out to be a foot-flat 31 lap sprint.

None of the cars made a pit stop and their lap times were only marginally slower, if at all than in a normal 10 lap sprint race.

Steve Humble romped away to lights-toflag win, setting the fastest lap of the race (and the day), a blistering 1 min 10.509sec, just short of the halfway point on lap 15.

He came under a serious challenge in the early stages, however, from Josh Broome, who managed to stay in touch until the Ra-

dical went sick on lap 23. Nevertheless, Broome had done enough to be classified in the results and, as the only Class A entry, duly won his class.

With Broome out, second overall went to Class B hotshot Gary Kieswetter, just one lap down on Humble after 37 minutes of superb action, with Martin Pugh’s Appleberry CanAm third overall and second in Class B. The biggest field of the day, however, rolled out for the two Mikes Place Clubmans races, with 31 cars on the grid.

Race 1 was a classic as Danie van Niekerk, Brennon Green, Basie Burger and Cody Alberts battled it out for the lead.

In the end, however, none of the three challengers could get quite close enough to make a move on Van Niekerk, who came home less than half a second ahead of Green, with Alberts a surprise third, 1.49sec further adrift, after Burger dropped

Race 2 saw closer results all round, as Donadio slowed by about a second a lap, allowing Van der Merwe to close to within half a second at the flag. Momberg, Forbes and Honeywill took the next three places.

Jurie Swart, Colin Meder and Jason Coetzee made the GTi challenge races their own with two exciting tussles at the sharp end. In the first, Swart led home Meder by three seconds with Coetzee less than half a second further adrift, followed by Dillon Joubert and Charl Visser.

Race 2 was just as close, as Swart led home Coetzee and Meder, all three crossing the line within less than three seconds, followed by Visser, Joubert and Thompson.

In Class C Dario Busi in the Automan Golf bounced back from a disappointing Race 1 to ace Class C in 12th overall.

Fabio Tafani showed why his V8 Masters car carries the No.1 plate with a well-judged win in the first V8 Masters and Makita Formula Supercars race, ahead of arch-rival Marcel Angel and veteran Richard Schreuder. Late entry David McFadden delivered a master class in racecraft with two superb wins in the RST Suzuki South Superbike races, chased home in each case by Kewyn Snyman, who is improving with every outing.

urbanville-based golfer Kaylah Williams put the perfect exclamation mark on her final competitive appearance for the 2020 season with a victory in the prestigious Ackerman Championship.

The 18-year-old fashioned a blistering closing loop of 31 strokes, featuring an eagle and four birdies in the final round at Clovelly Country Club on Sunday 18 October to win by seven shots from Ekurhuleni’s Nadia van der Westhuizen.

Her six-under-par 210 triumph marked a welcome return to the winner’s circle for the GolfRSA Elite Squad member since her Pro Shop Gauteng Open victory in May last year.

“It feels absolutely fantastic to lift a trophy again, especially in my last ranking event for the season,” said Williams.

“With the matric finals just around the corner, this was my last event and I really, really wanted to finish the season on a high note. I am extremely proud to have done just that.”

Williams, who is a learner at Fairmont High School, was only 14 when she lifted the sought-after Gus Ackerman Trophy for the first time, but she was just as thrilled the second time around to add her name to a win-

ner’s list that includes SA Golf Hall of Famers Wendy Warrington and Gilly Tebbutt, Ladies European Tour winner Ashleigh Buhai, Sunshine Ladies Tour champions Bertine Strauss, Nobuhle Dlamini and Carrie Park and former SA Women’s Match Play champion Cara Gorlei.

“It’s a huge honour to put my name on this list twice, because the Ackerman Championship is one of the oldest and most esteemed events on the Western Province Golf calendar and one of those events that has gained huge national support,” Williams said.

“We are so grateful to the Ackerman family and Pick n Pay for sponsoring the Ackerman Championship for the last 40 years and for their continued support of amateur golf in the Western Province.
