Bella Riva backtracks ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

olf lovers who were looking forward to taking a swing at the originally proposed new Bella Riva Lifestyle and Country Estate near Fisantekraal, can polish those clubs so long.

The developers, Sage Wise 67, have withdrawn their latest amended application last

week – a far more dense development with almost double the amount of housing units than the original application and without the golf course.

This change of plan came after the amended application – with 5 875 housing units instead of the 3 069 housing units in the first application and without the golf course – was submitted only about a month ago after a silence of more than five years.

After the recent first public participation period as part of the amendment application, the applicant has decided to withdraw the amended application from the department of environmental affairs and development planning and proceed with the existing approved environmental authorisation – dated 11 April 2016, Carina Nel of Guillaume Nel Environmental Consultants (GNEC) said in a letter by e-mail to interested and

affected parties on Friday 20 September.

GNEC was appointed to facilitate the environmental authorisation amendment application process as a result of substantive changes proposed to the site development plan.

On enquiry by TygerBurger she confirmed that many objections were received against the amended application.

Serving the community for years AVRIL FILLIES

W

hen her children left school 33 years ago, she decided to be of service to her community and fellow man.

Since the 1980s Margaret Voogt (83) from Blomtuin, Bellville, has dedicated her whole life to serving her fellow man and community – and is still doing it. She is one of the finalists in the 80 years and older category of the Community Champions Elder Awards presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers.

“I don’t like being in the limelight but prefer to be in the background. This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger visited her at home.

She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do.

“I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries.

“Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect secondhand clothing and every three months we have a sale. My team and I usually stored the clothing in boxes at the hospital, but a storeroom was cleaned and we use that space as our storeroom,” Margaret said.

She visits Karl Bremer every Thursday and all the clothes that are not sold are handed over to Patricia Groenewald of Avondale, to hand out where there is a need.

“We sometimes get knitted squares and use that to make blankets for the rape centre at Karl Bremer hospital. The past 20 years

I am a volunteer catering coordinator at the Bellville East Reformed Church for the nongovernmental organisation, Koningskinders. This is a group of underprivileged kids that we take on a camping trip every term.

“The kids are from Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein and the principal selects who attends the camps. The camp is over five days and is held at the Melkbosstrand Cultural Centre and matrics or college students are the group leaders. Each group leader has three children to take care of for the duration of the camp and the camp has a Christian theme,” she said.

The leader and kids read the Bible, say a prayer and are involved in certain activities like a concert and dress up. As part of her involvement with Koningskinders she makes food parcels and distributes them in the Kraaifontein community.

At her local church, she has been doing flower baskets for sick people every Sunday since 2000 to brighten their day.

“I don’t have money to give away but God gave me hands to reach out and contribute with. As I mentioned in the beginning, I don’t want publicity but appreciate the fact that I was nominated for the Community Champions Elders Award,” she chuckled.

Her compassion for the needy continues to be her daily focus despite her age and fragility. She has 11 great-grandchildren for whom she also knits beanies and bonnets when she gets time, and is waiting to hear the gender of her next great-grandchild.

The proposed development is situated east of R302 (Klipheuwel Road) and north of the R312 (Lichtenburg Road), opposite Fisantekaal and next to the Fisantekraal aerodome.

According to the original application document, the proposed development will feature 3 069 housing units, of which 1 000 subsidised housing units. The rest of the units will consist of: 545 large single residential units (larger than 700m²); 200 small single residential units (500m² to 700m²); 594 group housing units; 490 town housing units and a retirement village with 150 housing units, as well as 90 flats. The development will include a school for 2 000 learners and a crèche for 500 babies or toddlers.

The golf course will consist of a 18 hole golf course and clubhouse.

The Fisantekraal waste water treatment works is also located on the land. This will be buffered by a berm and open space.

Brave the Zevenwacht route in our trail run L

ace up your tekkies, “wear your newspaper” and join TygerBurger on Saturday 19 October at our first trail run at Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Kuils River.

The 5km trail run starts at 08:00. The uphill and winding route takes participants through the vineyards and has breathtaking views of the entire peninsula.

Hearts beating for charity: Curro Castle Durbanville recently held a collection drive in aid of Beating Heart SA. Beating Heart SA is a Cape Town-based charity organisation which focuses on the upliftment and encouragement of those in need. The nursery school’s families were asked to support the initiative by donating items for new moms in need. The drive received an overwhelming response and a sizeable donation of baby items was handed over to Beating Heart SA. Fietsryers tel rommel op

ergfietsryers van die GrannyGear-fietsry-akademie het verlede Vrydag 20 September ’n projek aangepak om die roetes waarop hulle oefen, skoon te maak.

Hulle het in drie spanne teen mekaar meegeding om te sien watter span die meeste rommel kon versamel op die area tussen die Biosport-fietsrypark en B-spot op Bloemendal.

“Dit het die kinders spanwerk geleer, asook om na die omgewing om te sien en die bewaring van ons pragtige natuur aangewakker,” het Marli Fourie van GrannyGear gesê.

Alex Kruger, afrigter van GrannyGear, het aan die kinders verduidelik die bewaring van die omgewing en in-

standhouding daarvan is ’n integrale deel van ons daaglikse lewe en is ons verantwoordelikheid.

“Dit was vir die kinders nie net pret nie, maar hulle was ook trots om te kon wys hoeveel rommel hulle kon verwyder en hoe netjies dit gelyk het na die opruimingsprojek.

“Die Tygerberg-fietsryklub hou die fietsryroetes in stand en as waardering kan die gebruikers daarvan help om die area skoon en rommel vry te hou,” het Fourie gesê.

Five waterberry (Syzigium cordatum) trees were donated and compost were donated by Sacio Trading, said Danielle Cronje, environmental officer of Garden Cities.

The waterberry tree is an evergreen, water-loving tree, which grows to a height of 8 to 15 metres. This tree if often found near streams such as the Mosselbank River corridor. It flowers from August to November with white to pinkish fragrant flowers,” Cronje said.

“The month of September South Africa celebrates trees and raises awareness of their importance and need for the conservation of indigenous trees that are threatened by extinction.

“Garden Cities invited the learners from Won Life early learning centre in Fisantekraal to join them for their tree planting day,” she said.

MRCT members Elizabeth Maans and Sharne Konyn explained the importance of planting trees and the benefits they hold to the learners.

“These benefits include reducing carbon dioxide levels, producing oxygen, providing shelter to animals, providing food to people and animals and help block wind and create shade,” Cronje said.

Members of the community services, waste, water and health departments of the City of Cape Town also joined in on the tree planting fun. Wilmot Arendse of City of Cape Town provided educational material to the learners.

One of the highlights was when Garden Cities handed out lollipops to all the children.

“Encourage your friends, family and neighbours to plant trees by giving a small plant or sapling as a gift this Arbor Month.

This is an easy way to make a difference,” Cronje said.

Members of different departments of the City of Cape Town joined in on the tree planting fun.

ie jaarlikse clivia-uitstalling in die Tygervallei-sentrum op 21 en 22 September was weer ’n reuse-sukses met honderde mense wat dié pragblomme van nader wou beskou.

Volgens Eddie Mathewson van die Cliviaklub was daar vanjaar ’n groter verskeidenheid clivias op die skou as verlede jaar.

“Die gunstelingkleur clivias was oranje, geel, brons, perske en salm.

“Uitstallers het van so ver as George, Sedgefield en Sandbaai gekom. Kopers het weereens die geleentheid gehad om clivias te koop wat nie in kwekerye beskikbaar is nie.

“Die publiek het die skou baie geniet en daar het baie gesprekke oor clivias, asook plante in die algemeen, plaasgevind,” sê Mathewson.

Die wen-uitstallers by die clivia-uitstalling was Gideon van Zyl van Kuilsrivier en Leon Blom van Durbanville. Thanks for keeping us on our toes A former editor once told me the quickest way to find out if people still read your newspaper, is by deliberately printing a typo in the headline ...

While that was not the case on page 2 of TygerBurger (with the exception of the Tyger Valley edition) last week – “Surcarge (sic) by City is unregulated” – the number of readers pointing it out via email, WhatsApp, Facebook and telephonically showed us how important their weekly dose of TygerBurger news still is.

Even more importantly, that language and grammar, contrary to the way the majority of people speak these days, are still high on our readers’ list of priorities.

If I may comment on some of these letters: Yes Antje, it is indeed “most embarrassing”. To Jeff, considering the production team left the office at 22:00 last Monday (due to an earlier deadline) after a 14 hour shift of staring at words the whole day, it was most likely not only the proof reader, but also the journalist, layout artist, second-line proof reader and yours truly that were “asleep”.

While we take every comment to heart, of which many were tonguein-cheek, some were downright nasty.

Calling the journalist “incompetent” or “not qualified”, or claiming we “think our readers are stupid” are uncalled for.

Anyone that has ever worked in a newsroom will tell you it’s a miracle how little mistakes actually make it into print considering how much newsrooms have shrunk and the immense pressure we work under to put out the best possible product week after week.

At TygerBurger, copy from 10 journalists as well as sports, entertainment and property contributors finds its way onto the pages of 14 zoned editions – from planning each page separately to subbing and final proofing every single article and copy thereof – within two days. That is a minimum of 100 news items (roughly 40 000 words) that has to be planned, double-checked and triple-checked before the 14 editions of the newspaper, which vary from 12 to 40 pages, can be put to bed. Many of our journalists also wear more than one hat – writing and gathering news from Wednesday to Friday, and then putting on a production hat on Monday and Tuesday.

By the end of day two of production the psycholinguistic hypothesis that the human mind does not read every letter by itself but the word as a whole, starts to ring true and two letters that are swopped around, or the “h” button on your keyboard getting stuck, can easily be missed by tired eyes staring at a sea of words.

So yes, we have made our fair share of mistakes and so has many other publications – like a daily newspaper that misspelled the name of its CEO on the front page, or one of our sister publications that accidentally reported on Dildo (instead of Dido) Valley.

And yes, it is super embarrassing when you open the paper the next day and find that typo glaring back at you. However, we ask the “errorists” to remember we are human – so please keep us on or toes, but spare us the personal attacks. We put our hearts into giving you the best read possible every week.

To borrow a line from a former colleague: “If you were to look at our error rate (we’d confidently put it at less than 1%), we’re doing better than the airline industry”. – Cecilia Hume (Editor)

Justice system is failing us We can write and complain about crime in our country until we’re blue in the face (“Genoeg is genoeg”, TygerBurger 11 September), but the situation will continue to deteriorate until the police and the prosecutors get their acts together and work in unison.

There are too many reports of shoddy police work and uncaring officers – but let me hasten to add that our local Durbanville cops seem to be a cut above the rest – and when the cops do get it right, judges and magistrates often get it wrong, usually to the benefit of the criminals.

A case in point is the murder of an Eversdal woman by a friend of her son, as reported in the TygerBurger. In his infinite wisdom, the judge declined to impose even the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years. As a result, this killer could be back on the streets in a few short years. I am shocked that the prosecutor has not appealed this sentence. Of course, if we had a government that could get the economy off its deathbed, and appoint properly qualified, experienced and incorrupt persons to the justice cluster, that would also help matters.

Teenstanders van die doodstraf het nog nie aan eie lyf die pyn gevoel na ’n gewelddadige aanval op ’n familielid nie.

Na aanleiding van Stapper se brief (“Skerp klippe op sypaadjies is ’n gevaar”, TygerBurger 18 September).

Ek verstaan heeltemal die probleem waarmee die klippe op sypaadjies gepaardgaan.

Die probleem is net, wil Stapper liewer hê die sypaadjies moet onnet en slordig vertoon in sy woonbuurt?

Die Stad Kaapstad onderhou meeste van die tyd nie meer woonbuurte se sypaadjies nie, die inwoners doen dit. Hoe los ’n mens die probleem op?

Graag wil ek dit onder die aandag bring van eienaars wat aansoek gedoen het vir die herwaardasie op eiendomme wat te hoog gewaardeer is.

Ek het aansoek gedoen dat my waardasie moet hersien word. Hulle het toe my eiendomswaardasie verlaag met R15 000 – van R1 230 000 na R1 215 000.

Dit beteken ek moet nou belasting betaal op die nuwe waardasie van R1 215 000 minus die eerste R300 000 van jou eiendom se waarde, wat die Stad Kaapstad aangekondig het ons nie belasting op gaan betaal nie.

Groot was my verbasing dat hulle my eiendomswaarde na R1 215 000 verlaag, maar toe trek hulle die R15 000 weer af van daardie R300 000 waarop ons veronderstel is om nie belasting te betaal nie – dit verander dus nou na die eerste R285 000. Enige mens wat ’n bietjie rekenvaardig is kan sien die Stad Kaapstad verneuk ons!

Yarden raises funds to the tune of 80s music Y

arden Children’s Enrichment Centre in Durbanville held a fundraising event on Tuesday 19 September at Koffi Terapi in Durbanville.

The daycare facility currently takes care of six severely physical and intellectual disabled children.

The event was held to raise funds to assist parents who cannot afford the fees. Guests were entertained with 80s music by The Banned Unplugged.

The centre was founded by Adri Cloete after she and her husband could not find a daycare facility for their son, Pierre.

Pierre, now 13 years old, was only a week old when he suffered deep venous thrombosis and severe intracranial hemorrhage in his brain. This left him with spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy impairment, as well as

epilepsy.

Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the thrombosis and it was revealed that Pierre has a blood disorder, Factor V Leiden Thrombophilia. This caused an increased tendency for abnormal blood clots to form, which block the blood vessels.

“Ever since Pierre’s illness, we have looked endlessly for a daycare that would accommodate him, but without any success,” Cloete said.

For eight years Pierre has been cared for at home by a full-time caregiver when they decided to start their own daycare centre.

“As a mother of an impaired child, it has always been my dream to open a centre where children like Pierre can be taken care of. “Being retrenched from my company in June 2014, I realised that it was then or

never to make my dream a reality,” she said.

They opened the centre in January 2015 in the Durbanville-Bergsig Dutch Reformed Church and later moved to a house at 2 Crown

Families benefit from Barnyard concerts Raising Hope SA, a non-profitable organisation in Durbanville, is selling tickets for the show Smash Hit Radio: 60 years of radio hits in the Barnyard Theatre in Willowbridge Shopping Centre on Thursday 3 October. The funds will be used to feed needy families in their Hampers of Hope project, said Mary Klinkradt of Raising Hope SA. The organisation was started by her teenage daughter, Ashlyn, in 2016.

“This project currently feeds 42 families or 222 people in total. All these families are impacted by disability.

For all of them there will be no food on the table – not a single meal – without our food hamper,” she said. “For the price of one Barnyard ticket, we can feed one family for a week. These hampers include dry staple products.

Each hamper is divided into smaller parcels to make it easier for the children to take home,” she said.

The doors open at 18:30, while the show starts at 20:00.

Tickets cost R120 each if bought from Raising Hope SA. The tickets usually cost R165, so this is a good deal, she said. Anyone who wishes to sponsor a table or tickets, can be issued a section 18A donation certificate for tax purposes.

CY Market presented with lots of fun

T

he popular CY Market is taking place from Monday 30 September to Sunday 6 October at Stone Shed on Vrymansfontein farm on Adderley Road outside Durbanville.

“This year we want to create an atmosphere of giving – giving your time, effort and creative input to bring hands full of beauty to homes and lives,” said Ansomari Schoeman, founder and organiser of the market.

“It is all about hands this year – hands stained with splashes of rich berry and jewelled colours, raw pottery, hints of forest, creamy linen, folk lace, paper elements, washed denim, cheesecloth, net and used paint brushes,” she said.

The market is open from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00, Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00.

. On Monday 30 September live music is presented by Newton. There will also be clay pigeon shooting and a mother-and-daughter fitness session from 08:00 to 09:00. The cost of the session is R80 per pair, which includes free entry to the market. Book by sending an email to bianca@fitmom100.co.za. . On Tuesday 1 October and Thursday 3 October Fitmom100 sweat sessions are presented from 08:30 to 09:30. Participants are encouraged to dress up in 80s gear on Tuesday.

APPLICATION FOR GRANT-IN-AID FUNDING 2020/21: SUBCOUNCIL 7 (WARD 105) The City of Cape Town’s Subcouncil 7 invites applications for the financial year commencing 1 July 2020 from registered organisations working in Ward 105 who wish to implement environmental health services relating to animals.

Ward 105 comprises the following areas: Durmonte – Welgevonden– Klipheuwel Housing Scheme – Mikpunt – Vierlanden – Ruitershoogte – Proteaville – Brentwood Park (Durbanville) – The Crest – Wellway Park – Graanendal - Joostenbergvlakte Smallholdings – Kraaifontein Industrial (West of Maroela Street, South of the N1 Freeway, Anderson South Road and Wagtail Street; East of the railway line and North of the N1 Freeway) – Philadelphia – Fisantekraal Industrial – Fisantekraal – Durbanville (North of Wellington Drive and Hibiscus Way and East of Koeberg Way and Plein Street) – Westerdale – Greenville Garden City – Schoongezicht – Clara Anna Fontein.

Proposals must be made in writing and must specify details of the project(s), including purpose and location. Project proposals must be confined to municipal responsibilities and further the strategic aims of the City as set out in the IDP, Economic Growth Strategy and Social Development Strategy.

ie voorreg om in die groot rooi brandweerwa te ry en om eerstehands te leer hoe om vure te blus, is die rede waarom die Goggas van die Gogga-Paradys Speelgroepie in De Bron nou ook vure wil blus!

Hulle het die Durbanville-brandweerstasie vroeër vandeesmaand besoek. Die peloton-bevelvoerder Deon Nel en sy personeellede het die Goggas en hul ouers vriendelik ontvang.

Leslie Rowan het op ’n kindervriendelike manier baie interessante en insiggewende demonstrasies van ’n brandweerwa, brandbestryders se pligte en hul kleredrag verduidelik. Klein en groot het dié demonstrasies terdeë geniet.

“Ek kan jou verseker die Goggas het die kans om self met die brandslang water te spuit, die meeste geniet.

Dit was groot pret en ’n belewenis, want as jy nie weet hoe nie, word jy self waternat, maar danksy die hulp van die personeellede was daar darem nie baie ‘watergevalle’ nie,” het Miranda van Zyl (Tannie Mier), die hoofgogga, gesê.

Die kans om ook saam met ’n regte brandbestryder in die brandweerwa te sit, was nóg ’n hoogtepunt.

“Die opgewondenheid by die ouers en kinders was groot en dit was beslis ’n dag wat vir baie jare onthou sal word,” het sy gesê.

Volgens haar is die gemeenskap baie dankbaar vir die onbaatsugtige en uiters noodsaaklike werk wat ons land se brandbestryders verrig. Na dié besoek is daar nou ’n hele nuwe peloton brandbestryders onder die Goggas.

Mervyn Abrahams, brand- en lewensveiligheidsopvoeder by die Atlantis-

brandweer, het by navraag verduidelik wat hulle aan die kleuters, peuters of volwassenes verduidelik as die brandweer besoek word.

“Vir September het ek nou al 15 besoeke gehad en wanneer ons met die kleuters werk, praat ons oor brandveiligheid en waarom goed brand.

“Ons leer hulle ook dat vuurhoutjies nie ’n speelding is nie en dat net volwassenes daarmee moet werk.

“Ons leer hulle ook die twee noodnommers, naamlik 107, wat jy vanaf ’n landlyn bel, en 112 vanaf jou selfoon,” het Abrahams gesê.

Een van die vrae wat hy gereeld vra, is wat word aangesmeer as jy dalk brand.

“Baie kinders sê hul ouers smeer botter, tandepasta of seep aan en dan verduidelik ons dat jy die brandwond net onder lopende kraanwater moet hou vir tussen 15 en 20 minute. Daarna moet jy so gou as moontlik by die dokter of hospitaal uitkom.

“Die sit in die brandweerwa is ook altyd ’n wenner, want ons wys hulle watter apparate alles daarin is. Die demonstrasie met die brandslang sorg altyd vir groot opwinding, want die kinders is gou om vir jou te sê hulle het ander klere saamgebring en skrik nie om nat te word nie,” het Abrahams geskerts.

Die blydskap op die kinders se gesigte is vir hom beloning genoeg.

“Hulle vra goeie vrae en ons beantwoord dit maar so eenvoudig as moontlik sodat hulle kan verstaan.

“Ons doen dieselfde veiligheidsdemonstrasies by ouetehuise, skole of biblioteke,” het Abrahams gesê.

Hy is nou al 23 jaar verbonde aan brandweerdienste en die afgelope ses jaar die brand- en veiligheidsopvoeder.

rackenfell has become one of Cape Town’s top performing residential areas, highly sought after among a younger generation of home buyers.

New shopping malls, coffee shops, restaurants, gyms, schools and convenient medical facilities abound, all set within a leafy suburb with an abundance of open spaces, providing a magnet for young families and creating an ongoing demand for residential accommodation.

“This is evidenced by the fact that notwithstanding the slowdown in house price inflation being seen in many parts of the city’s residential property market, over the past decade prices of houses and sectional title properties in Brackenfell have almost doubled,” says Keimpe Weistra, Pam Gold-

ing Properties’ area principal for the suburb. He attributes the solid performance of this relatively new suburb – Brackenfell was only established in 1913 – to its comparative affordability as well as the emergence of business and industrial nodes in the area.

“Brackengate business park and the completion of the new Haasendal Village Square has stimulated commercial activity in the area, and created more jobs. The knock-on effect has been the expansion of Brackenfell’s housing market, as more young families and first-time buyers move into the area,” explains Weistra.

Brackenfell also offers a range of school options, making it appealing to young families. With primary and high schools offering English and Afrikaans tuition, Brackenfell

has broad appeal. With Stellenbosch in close proximity, this suburb is equally attractive to buyers thinking about tertiary education.

With easy access to the R300 and the N2, as well as the N1 if commuting to Cape Town central, Brackenfell is well located.

Younger buyers are especially drawn to the newer “sub-suburbs”, many of which have modern residential developments.

These include Sonkring and Burgundy, which offer recently-completed duplex and townhouse options, as well as the burgeoning Schoongezicht Estate. “The styles and finishes in these homes are more in line with what a millennial buyer would prefer. Good season for mountain biking

D

urbanville and DF Malan High schools were placed third and fifth overall in the Western Cape finals of the 2019 Spur Schools MTB League and will be competing in the national finals this week.

Kenridge won the primary schools division.

The Western Cape wrapped up an exciting 2019 Spur Schools Mountain Bike League (SSMTBL) season with a record number of 1025 entries.

Host school Paul Roos Gimnasium continued their winning streak of the past 11 years and walked off as the winner in the boys and overall categories with a seasonal total of 1985 points. This victory was spearheaded by Ben Puddu, who ascribes their success to the absolute commitment

from the riders and the fact that mountain biking is accredited as an official school sport at Paul Roos Gimnasium.

“We have consistently developed the sport over the past 11 years and have managed to build great depth in the team with 30 new intakes signing up for mountain biking this year”, said Puddu – a teacher at the school and keen mountain biker himself.

Another league stalwart, Parel Vallei High School in Somerset West finished second overall with 1155 points with the boys placed second and the girls finishing in fourth position. Durbanville High School took the third slot in the overall competition with 808 points with their boys third on the podium and their girls team placed fourth.

Rhenish Girls’ High School showed great consistency this year and won the women category of the Western Cape leg with 237 points followed by HTS Drostdy in second with 157 and Durbanville High School in a close third with 155 points.

Filling the fourth to tenth slot overall were HTS Drostdy, DF Malan High School, Montana High School, Hermanus High School, Rhenish Girls High, SACS College and Curro Hermanus. The boys’ teams from HTS Drostdy and DF Malan have also qualified for the national finals.

Based on a national weighting system, the Western Cape qualifies 5 boys and 5 girls teams for the SSMTBL finals to be hosted at Wagpos High School outside Brits in the North West Province from 2628 September.

Danielle Barnard of Durbanville High School finished third in the youth women’s race.

Durbell maak hom reg vir Goue Beker SAREL BURGER

et die onverwagte maklike oorwinning van 36-7 wat Durbanville-Bellville op Saterdag 21 September in die halfeindronde van die Presidentbekerklubrugbykompetisie oor die Universiteit van Kaapstad behaal het, het die Durbies ’n dubbele slag geslaan.

Nie alleen sou Durbell gister, op Erfenisdag, in die eindstryd van die topafdeling teen die Maties te staan kom nie, maar as die voorste nie-universitêre klub sal hy nou ook vroeg aanstaande jaar weereens die WP-verteenwoordiger in die nasionale Goue Beker-kompetisie wees. Die uitslag van die Presidentbeker-eindstryd was met druktyd nog nie beskikbaar nie.

Die klub Valsbaai, wat saam met Durbell in die wedloop was vir deelname aan die Goue Beker-kompetisie, het in die ander halfeindstryd met 21-26 teen die Maties vasgeval. Saterdag in die halfeindstryd teen die Ikeys het sake aanvanklik nie heeltemal na wense verloop vir die Durbies nie.

Hulle is lank in hul eie halfgebied vasgepen, maar danksy goeie benutting van hul puntekanse het Durbell met rustyd met 15-0 voorgeloop.

In die tweede helfte het Durbanville-Bellville die hef in die hand gekry en die verbrokkelende Ikeys al meer op hul agtervoete gedwing om uiteindelik ’n sege met 36-7 te beklink.

Die Tygerbergstreek sou gister in al drie afdelings van die WP se Presidentbekerkompetisie se eindstryde verteenwoordig wees. In die B-afdeling het Kuilsrivier met sy oorwinning van 36-27 oor Bellville die eindstryd gehaal teen Hamlets, wat St. George met 30-28 uitgeskakel het.

Wat die C-afdeling betref, was daar vroegdag drama in die kleine op die City Park-stadion in Athlone. Toe die Kraaifonteinse klub Hands & Heart daar opdaag, is hy deur die WP-unie (WPRU) verhoed om in die een halfeindstryd teen Langa uit te draf, aangesien daar ’n beswaar ingebring is teen ’n speler van Hands & Heart. Wat die Kraaie des te meer die hoenders in gemaak het, is dat hulle nie vooraf deur die WPRU hiervan in kennis gestel is nie.

Hoewel Scottsdene met sy sege van 44-18 in die ander halfeindstryd sy plek in die eindstryd bespreek het, was dit weens die debakel met die Hands & Heart-wedstryd met druktyd onduidelik wanneer die eindstryd in die C-afdeling sou plaasvind.

Goodwood Harriers to host 10km race this weekend The Goodwood Harriers will host a 10km run or walk on Saturday 28 September at the Fort Ikapa Military Base in Tygerdal.

The race starts at 07:00 with a two-hour time limit. The prize-giving is at 09:00.
