Not even his face mask could disguise the broad smile of matric learner Tendai Muchengi of Fairmont High School in Durbanville last Monday when Grade 7 and 12 learners in the Western Cape returned to school. DURBANVILLE: 11 POLICEMEN TESTED POSITIVE

P
rotective glass screens have been erected at the front desk counters in the community service centres of Durbanville and Fisantekraal police stations this past weekend to protect the police officers and the public alike against the spread of Covid-19. This came after the Durbanville police station was closed twice to be disinfected after positive cases since the onset of the Covid-19 pan-
demic. A total of 11 police officers have tested positive for the virus, of which only one was hospitalised, according to Lt Col Theo Fisher, acting station commander of Durbanville police, which also serves the Fisantekraal area. Of these positive cases, three officers have already recovered and tested negative when they were retested. Five more were retested this past Saturday, Fisher said. The officer that was hospitalised

was discharged last Thursday and is doing well, he said. According to Fisher, the protocol is that officers can only return to work once they have tested negative after their recovery. The screens were made possible by Durbanville Community Policing Forum (CPF), which volunteered to be the lead agent in the fundraising project towards the screens. Last week R4 000 of the necessary R5 000 was still needed to erect the main screens.
HEARING SCREENINGS
According to Maritha Roukema of the Durbanville CPF donations were received from members of the organisation, as well as from local businesses. The durable screens are made of aluminium and security glass for long-term use. “This was the first two of three phases of the project. We plan to erect shields at the private interview cubicles at the Durbanville community service centre in a third phase, but still need the necessary funds for this,” she said.

“The project was initiated due to concern for both our community members, as well as police members who have been on the forefront during this time. “We thank our local businesses and CPF members for their wonderful support and contributions which made implementation possible,” Roukema said. V Community members or business interested to support the new phase of the project can send an email to cpf.durbanville@gmail.com for enquiries on how to contribute.
