Hallo to the festive season! The drum majorettes from the Groote Schuur Primary School performed at this year’s Switching on of the Christmas Lights held at the Bothasig police station on Saturday 30 November. Hundreds of people flocked to the event which was officially opened by station commander Lt Col Patrick Jacobs. This year’s event was dedicated to the late Ian Ward, founder of One FM 94.0. STRONG WINDS: TREE UPROOTED

Tree causes ‘roadblock’ RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

A

giant tree in Monte Vista fell over in Monte Vista, narrowly missing a nearby primary school. The tree, supposedly a poplar tree, was uprooted on the corner of Van der Spuy and Visagie streets on Thursday 21 November. It obstructed the road for a few hours, and nearly damaged the roof of an early childhood development (ECD) centre at Monte Vista Primary School. No one was injured in the incident. This is according to Cheryl Visser, ward

1 councillor, who was informed of the incident a day later by school principal, Sophia Swart. Information about the fallen tree was also shared with residents on the Monte Vista and Plattekloof Glen Ratepayers and Residents’ Association Facebook page. One resident said it is hardly surprising the tree fell over, due to the strong wind on the day. Another resident said it is sad to see such an old tree fall over. Kelvin Irvine, team leader for parks at the ratepayers and residents’ association told TygerBurger that this was not the first inci-

dent of its kind. “It is the second one in the past few days and was certainly the biggest,” he says. Volunteers from the neighbourhood watch used hand tools to clear the obstruction. The City’s parks department and disaster risk management, also assisted with the removal of the tree. “With the number of trees in the area that has pitch canker disease, we have seen at least four big trees blown over recently, as they were dead. The stumps are still in the process of being removed. “The parks department have cut down a few trees last week that posed a danger to

pedestrians, and we have identified a good few more that need to be cut down before they fall down. “It is also feasible that some trees have not been able to recover from the drought and are weakened, as many of the trees that were planted by the City of Cape Town way back when, were not indigenous,” Irvine explains. He says the association’s committee are in contact with the parks department, but that there is budget constraints and that the removal of the trees not only involves chopping down dead trees.
