family in Edgemead was fortunate to escape unharmed after a giant tree toppled outside their house in Baxter Way. The rubber tree was uprooted by

strong winds, homeowner Peter Knott says.

“It was about 18:45 when my wife, Jenny, heard the terribly loud noise. My mother-inlaw who is nearly 89-years-old and partly deaf got a terrible fright. Jenny ran outside to find one part of the tree that stood on our neighbour’s verge had fallen over, and was

lying across our garage front and roof,” Peter says. The tree was near their driveway and damaged the roof sheets of the garage.

Knott, who was at work at the time of the incident, says his wife tried calling him several times and that during that time the second huge piece of the tree had started fal-

ling and landed across the road. “With that the largest part of the tree also fell, reaching right over the road to the verge opposite our home. We were relieved that nobody was injured as a man and his dog were walking by when the first part fell.

New ultrasound at Tygerberg a first in Africa D

octors at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital can now “see” and diagnose lung diseases in children without invasive surgery thanks to the donation of a specialised bronchoscope by the Rotary Club of Blouberg.

The R3 million bronchoscope with a miniature radial ultrasound probe is the first such equipment in South Africa and the only one in Africa.

At the official handover at the hospital on Thursday 23 January, Prof Pierre Goussard, Tygerberg Children’s Hospital clinical paediatric pulmonologist, explained that in the past, surgery had to be performed by opening the chest to get samples and biopsies to detect any abnormalities in the airways of children.

He says this new, less invasive technology now gives doctors the opportunity to go down the airway to get samples by using a 2mm needle.

This procedure will be used on children between the ages of three months and 12 years old and is a vital tool in the management of lung diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) and cystic fibrosis as well as HIV-related lung disease, congenital lung abnormalities and complicated pneumonia cases.

The bronchoscope gives the paediatric pulmonologist the opportunity to visualise the pathology in the airways of the child, collect specimens for diagnosis and even intervene to re-establish a compromised airway in a child.

Helène Visser of the Blouberg Rotary Club says the funds for the bronchoscope were raised through determination, collective fundraising with the help of local and

global Rotary networks and a donation from the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust.

Visser invited Randell Barclay of the Wallingford Vermont Rotary Club in the United States to be their international partner, who in turn invited 12 clubs in his rotary district to contribute as well as four Rotarians.

The local Rotary Clubs of Goodwood, Tygerberg, Signal Hill, Claremont and Rotary District 9350 (Cape Town) also joined hands in this project.

Visser also invited Dr Bettye Walker, a member of the Los Angeles Rotary Club and the peace facilitator for Rotary District 5280, and Prof Hildreth (Hal) Walker (who was responsible for the operations of the lunar laser ranging system during the first moon

landing), to also become a major partners.

Other contributors were Rotary clubs in Austria, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Hawaii, Japan and Bulgaria.

The Blouberg Rotary Club then applied to Rotary International for a global grant whereby they matched the funding from all the Rotary clubs and Rotary districts.

With the help of a Japanese Rotarian, Dr Yukari Kurita, a 10% discount was received from Olympus and Surgical Innovation, the suppliers of this specialised medical equipment.

Visser says Blouberg Rotary along with their national and international Rotary partners will now embark on another Rotary global grant application to bring doctors from the African continent to Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, to be trained in the use of the bronchoscope.

“Our neighbour managed to alert a woman in her car just in time before the second part of the tree hit the road,” Peter explains.

He says his daughter, Kirsty, had managed to get hold of him as his wife was frantically phoning the municipality and ward councillor, Helen Carstens, to obtain emergency numbers.

“We are grateful for the neighbourhood watch who started the process of sawing, and trying to clear up some of the mess.

Thankfully the trucks and cherry picker arrived, and it was just before midnight by the time they cleared the road and lifted the three heavy trunks out of the road, and off our roof,” he says.

The road was closed most of the evening.

The family has been living in Edgemead for 28 years and the tree, Knott says, was on the verge when they moved in.

minutes before this happened.

“The other vehicle in our drive-way was missed by millimetres.

“Someone must have been looking after us,” he says.

Peter suspects that the tree was old and the top part was heavy. With the dry ground and gale force winds on Friday 17 January, this all added up to the tree’s unfortunate demise, he says.

he intersection at the corner of Jakes Gerwel and Voortrekker Road (before GrandWest) is on ward 26’s priority list as concerns have been raised about the disregard taxi drivers have for road rules.

Ward councillor Cecile Janse van Rensburg says discussions are underway to remedy the situation, “We have a lot of law enforcement in the area and at those intersections, but it seems enforcement is not the sustainable approach. We are busy looking at ways to improve the crossing,” says Janse van Rensburg.

A commuter Cindy Davids (34) says she

doesn’t feel comfortable when the taxi stops on the side of the road. “It’s not safe because they don’t stand behind a yellow line or in a bus stop.

“I have no other choice but to utilise the taxi because this is my only means of transport. It would be great if the councillor or someone can come up with a better solution for the taxi drivers.”

A 24-year-old man, who asked to remain anonymous, because he works at a local business on Voortrekker Road says this is a daily issue. “The taxi drivers don’t care and it can become very dangerous.”

Ecological burns for nature reserves scheduled Nearby residents and visitors to Tygerberg Nature Reserve will be seeing smoke when a scheduled ecological burn takes place in the area.

In a press release the City’s Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt, says 13 ha will be burned at Tygerberg Nature Reserve between February and April this year.

About 2.5 ha will be burned at nearby Durbanville Nature Reserve from March to April.

These burns of old vegetation are necessary to maintain species’ diversity and to reduce fuel loads, which in turn reduces the risk of wildfires.

“The actual dates are dependent on ideal weather conditions.

“We will, however, ensure that the surrounding residents are provided with further details of each planned ecological burn once the dates are confirmed so that they can be prepared for the event,” said Nieuwoudt.

The Fire and Rescue Service will also conduct the required pre-inspection of the areas; fire-breaks will be maintained and widened where necessary, and firefighting equipment and fire hydrants will be tested to ensure seamless operations on the day.

For safety reasons these reserves, or portions thereof, will be closed to the public on the day of the burning and for a few a days after until the area is deemed safe.

Cuddles, creativity meet at market Following the success of previous markets, the Durbanville Craft Market will present monthly pet and craft markets on the first Saturday of every month from 09:00 to 14:00.

Stalls are still available for the first market on Saturday 1 February in the garden of Durbanville Presbyterian Church on the corner of Louw and Hafele streets in Durbanville (behind police station, next to fire station).

A pet adoption day and micro-chipping will be presented.

D

ie Tygerberg-kunssentrum in Du Toitstraat in Fairfield Estate in Parow is al sedert 1975 aan die gang en talle bekende, sowel as suksesvolle kunstenaars, ingenieurs en ontwerpers het reeds hier hul opleiding ontvang.

Daar is tans sowat 460 voltydse studente by die sentrum ingeskryf, wat deur sewe ervare en toegewyde kunsonderwysers opgelei word. “Elk van die onderwysers is kundiges in hul veld,” sê Greg Lawson, sentrumwoordvoerder.

Dat gehaltewerk aangebied word en die resultate wat dit oplewer, kan ’n mens maklik sien as jy die sentrum besoek. Die sentrum se mure en gange is versier met alle soort kunswerke, modelle en foto’s. Die huidige

Christine Brownbridge, wat al 40 jaar by die sentrum klasgee, bied grafiese en drukkuns aan.

Lawson, wat al nege jaar daar klas gee, sê die studente kom van oral.

“Ons fokus hoofsaaklik op kuns as skoolvak vir leerders in grade 10, 11 en 12 wie se skole nie dié vak aanbied nie.”

Van die skole wat die sentrum bedien sluit in die hoërskole Stellenberg, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Edgemead, Bosmansdam, J.G. Meiring, President, Settlers, De Kuilen, Fairbairn, Dunatos, Fairmont en Tygerberg. Klasse is van Maandae tot Vrydae in die namiddag.

Dan is daar ook tuisskoolleerders wat die sentrum bedien as deel van sy uitreikprogram. Lawson sê daar is sowat 200 leerders by dié sentrum ingeskryf.

Daarbenewens bied hulle ook klas aan vrywillige studente wat op Vrydae daar klasloop. Die klasse is beskikbaar vir leerders van enige graad. “Sommige van dié leerders word ook later studente hier,” sê Lawson.

Die sentrum bied onder meer visuele kunste en ontwerp as vakke aan. Onder visuele kunste as vak kan studente kies tussen fotografie, teken of skilder en onder ontwerp kan hulle kies tussen illustrasie, keramiek, grafiese en drukkuns, tekstiel en mode- of juweliersontwerp.

“Daar is tans geen keramiekstudente en net een juweliersontwerpstudent,” sê Lawson, maar voeg by dat laat inskrywings vir dié vakke nog aanvaar word.

Lawson, wat illustrasie aanbied, sê daar is nog etlike plekke oop. “Ons wil hê kinders wat hier kom, moet voel asof hulle iets bereik wanneer hulle die klasse voltooi het.”

Koeberg tank clean-up a big success A

verda South Africa’s Specialised Industrial Cleaning (SIC) team recorded what is believed to be a world first by completing a high-risk clean-up of two tanks at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station at the end of last year.

The refuelling water storage (PTR) tanks have been in use to store contaminated radioactive water for some 40 years and needed to be thoroughly cleaned before they were demolished and disposed of, as they were due for replacement.

“This is a phenomenal achievement by our team from Mossel Bay that services our industrial clients in the region,” says Johan van den Berg, managing director of Averda South Africa. “It was a tough assignment in one of the most hazardous environments one could imagine, and they managed to exceed the client’s expectations.”

The project was undertaken under contract from Lesedi Nuclear Services and required the Averda team to clean two stainless steel tanks that stand 20m high and 12m wide. They are integral to the nuclear power station’s running, and the radioactive water it has stored could easily have contaminated the structure.

According to Lesedi, there is no record of any other project in which the inside of these tanks have been high-pressure hydro washed to remove radioactive particles and contamination.

The SIC team spent weeks preparing for the job, including a week of safety training before they travelled from Mossel Bay to the Koeberg nuclear plant.

This training had to be in line with Koe-

berg’s stringent safety procedures and the Averda teams core focus was radioactive contamination and to keep that as low as possible.

The high degree of caution was not only to prevent exposure to any radioactive materials or surfaces, but especially because the tanks were still in place alongside the reactors.

Once all the preparations were completed, the three-day cleaning process could begin.

The key was to remove all the remaining particles that could be radioactive from the inside of the tank.

“To do this, the team started by suspending a 360° high-pressure nozzle into the tank for 12 hours. Only the following day did team members enter in specialised bubble suits to continue this process with hand-held highpressure nozzles,” says Van den Berg.

“We could not have been happier with the results, as was Koeberg. The radiation in the tanks before we started was quite high, but when we were done there wasn’t a trace of any remaining radioactive particles.”

Understandably, the safety of all staff was the first priority throughout the project.

Which is standard practice for Averda’s SIC team that services major industrial clients throughout South Africa. Averda Mossel Bay branch coordinator Mark Golden says that although the possibility of being exposed to radioactive material makes this risky, many other industrial tanks contain residual gases that are far more volatile.

“This is something that’s not visible, so you have to trust your monitors and your training because if the exposure gets too high you have to evacuate immediately,” he says.

Electricity scam doing the rounds The City of Cape Town has called on residents to be vigilant of apparent scammers posing as City electricity officials, gaining access to homes.

In a statement, the City warns that the scammers, dressed in council uniform and carrying some form of identification, go to homes where they insist on being let in so that electricity infrastructure, including the meter, can be checked.

The City’s Mayco member for energy and climate change, Phindile Maxiti, says while one scammer talks to the resident, the other steals small, personal items.

“It appears that elderly residents are especially being targeted. The City does not have members of staff going door-todoor to check on infrastructure without an appointment.

“All municipal workers and contractors must carry a work order number specific to that dwelling and a City-issued identification card.

“Residents should ask to check the official identification card before allowing anyone onto their property.

“Residents are not to allow anyone onto their premises until they have verified these details. Our residents should al-

ways be vigilant in these cases,” adds Maxiti.

He further states that the City is currently rolling out a free electricity meter replacement programme across the metro. “Each meter replacement has a notification number on the City’s internal system, which the City’s Call Centre can verify should a resident enquire. Residents can also make an appointment for their meter to be changed at a time which suits them.”

Members of the public can verify whether visitors to their home are in fact employed by the City by: . phoning the Call Centre on 0860 103 089 to confirm whether work is being carried out in their area; and . informing the official that they will allow them entry only once the Call Centre has verified their identity.

Residents can find out which suburbs have had this meter replacement work completed and if their suburb has been selected for upgrades by viewing the schedule on www.capetown.gov.za/electricitymeters.

Provincial health monitors Coronavirus outbreak The provincial health department is closely monitoring developments of the novel coronavirus outbreak in China, they stated on Friday.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) regularly issues updates on the situation.

In China, 26 people have died and 830 cases reported, since the outbreak on 7 January.

“Together with the national department of health, the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) has developed and distributed clinical guidelines and case definitions for doctors and nurses in both the public and the private sectors to better detect, identify and respond to a possible 2019-nCoV case,” a spokesperson said.

“Surveillance systems are in place to rapidly identify and detect any cases in South Africa. This includes the screening and monitoring of anyone with a relevant travel history and close contacts with the area of the outbreak. Western Cape Government Health is prepared and ready to act if necessary,” it was stated.

According to the WHO’s website, coro-

naviruses are a family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars).

These viruses are transmitted between animals and people.

Sars, for instance, was believed to have been transmitted from civet cats to humans while Mers travelled from a type of camel to humans.

Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

A novel coronavirus, identified by Chinese authorities on 7 January and currently named 2019-nCoV, is a new strain that had not been previously identified in humans.

Little is known about it, although human-to-human transmission has been confirmed.

According to the WHO, signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

T

he Woof Project, which is operated by a non-profit organisation (NPO), makes pet adoption much easier by operating a mobile unit which allows animal lovers to pop around and view some of the fur friends they have in their care.

The project is currently located at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

Ashleigh Marais, spokesperson, says the The Woof Project is powered by Oscars Arc, an NPO, which was established by Joanne Lefson as a lasting legacy to her adopted dog, Oscar.

Together they travelled around the world visiting 43 countries to promote adoption with the aim of changing the status quo, and accelerating dismal adoption numbers, Marais says.

“There are incredible dogs in shelters dying for a second chance,” says Lefson.

She adds, “If people could just

see them and meet them, they would all be adopted.”

Oscars Arc was founded in 2017.

Marais says the mobile unit they introduced is currently at the V&A Waterfront on Noble Square until the end of February.

Marais says the adoption process is simple.

“The Woof Project offers a convenient, inspired and customer-driven dog adoption experience that includes a ‘name your price’ adoption fee.”

She says all the dogs are vaccinated, sterilized and ready to go to their new homes after a brief home check.

“We currently have 50 dogs up for adoption and these dogs are from shelters across the Western Cape,” Marais says.

Comedy Festival returns After a successful inaugural year the Mother Cit y Comedy Festival returns to the Baxter studio theatre from Tuesday 11 to Saturday 29 February .

More than 45 comedians will be performing in 40 shows over three weeks. Produced by Siv Ngesi, in collaboration with Taylor Made Productions, the festival celebrates stand-up comedy in all its forms, presenting a full spectrum of different comedic styles.

With two shows daily, and three on weekends, the festival will get audiences up close and personal with their favourite comedians while introducing them to some of the country’s most exciting upcoming talent.

“We had such a phenomenal response to the first festival, we’ve made the programme longer, bigger and even better,” says Ngesi. “The festival proved to be not only a great event for comedy connoisseurs to get their fix, but also a key platform for newer stars to perform at a major Cape Town venue.”

So staan ons aan die begin van ’n splinternuwe jaar – ’n nuwe jaar met 365 geleenthede. ’n Tyd waarin baie besin oor die afgelope jaar en aan nuwejaarsvoornemens begin dink. Lysies word gemaak van alles wat jy graag in die nuwe jaar sou wou verander sodat jy op jou beste kan wees. Sommige mense besluit ook op ’n mantra wat hulle dan hul eie maak deur die loop van die nuwe jaar. Hoe lank hierdie goeie voornemens hou, is ’n ope vraag.

Wat my egter aan die dink gesit het, is die woorde van Zozibini Tunzi, Mej. Suid-Afrika en ook nuut verkose Mej. Heelal. Sy sê: “The most important thing we should teach young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time, not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labeled women to do.” Sy sê voorts ook: “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful.”

Sy spreek tot elkeen van ons en wil hierdeur beklemtoon dat ons almal “mooi” in eie reg is, ongeag hoe ons lyk of die kleur van ons vel. Moet jouself nooit minder ag omdat jy dink dat ander beter of “mooier” as jy is nie!

Hoeveel jong mense kraak hulself af omdat hulle voel dat hulle nie slim, maer, ryk of “mooi” genoeg is nie en vergelyk hulself met ander? Die oomblik wat jy gemaklik in jou eie vel is, is jou uitkyk oor die lewe ook meer positief en jy is ’n gelukkiger jy. Wees trots op wie jy is – daar is niemand anders soos jy nie!

Wat my veral getref het, is haar woorde oor vroue en leierskap. Ek wil ’n beroep doen op elke jong vrou “to take up your space” in Zozibini se woorde. Moenie dat enigiets of enigiemand jou terughou nie.

Ken jou potensiaal en volg jou drome na met dringendheid. Moet nooit jouself onderskat omdat jy ’n vrou is nie, droom groot en weet jy is tot enigiets in staat is. ’n Groot rolmodel van my, Michelle Obama, wie met Barack Obama, die 44ste president van die Verenigde State getroud is, is ook ’n groot voorstander van die bemagtiging van vroue en meisies. Sy ook doen ’n beroep op vroue om hul regmatige plek in die samelewing in te neem met die volgende: “You don’t have to aspire to just be the wind beneath someone’s wing ... prioritise yourself.”

“Become more than just somebody’s wife!” Dit was van die begin af duidelik, as ’n Princeton- en Harvard-gegradueerde, as prokureur en selfs as die Eerste Dame dat Michelle Obama geglo en toegewyd was aan haar persoonlike ontwikkeling.

Sy het geglo dis in haar om vas te stel wat haar lewensroeping is en om haar stem te laat hoor. Sy is meer as net Barack Obama se vrou, meer as ’n moeder, meer as ’n dogter ... sy word die vrou wat sy bestem was om te word!

Dis ’n inspirasie vir een en elk om tot jou volle potensiaal te ontwikkel. Laat dit jou nuwejaarsvoornemens wees.

Die eerste stap sal wees om jou skoolopleiding, asook tersiêre opleiding te voltooi. Daar is instellings wat beurse aanbied vir belowende studente. Slegs studies gaan jou uit armoede lig en jou help om ’n beter lewe te lei. Droom groter as jou huidige omstandighede; jy moet daai wil hê om selfversorgend te wees en nie op ander staat te maak om na jou om te sien nie.

Belangrikste – wat is jou droom? Doen alles in jou vermoë om daai droom na te jaag en dit te verwesentlik.

Nodeloos om te sê was my vriende hewig ontsteld dat enigeen die natuur so kan minag, en dit was dus voor die hand liggend dat daar nie ’n enkele pylstert te sien was nie. Een toeskouer se opmerking was “dat die see groot genoeg is en dat ’n bietjie Jik geen verskil sal maak nie”. Ons besluit toe om op die hout-wandelroete al langs die see te gaan stap, en weereens moes ek hoor “typical South Africa”.

Hoekom? Want die persoon wat die verrotte planke vervang het, het die oues sommer so nonchalant in die

bosse gesmyt waar dit nou stille getuienis is van iemand se gebrek aan omgee. Wat die Jik aanbetref, kon ons dit ’n halwe kilometer verder nog ruik.

My vriende het my gevra of Suid-Afrikaners nog nooit van hoëdrukspuite gehoor het nie – dit sal met die alge korte mette maak en nie die see besoedel nie. Ek wil weet waar is die mense wat hul stemme moet laat hoor, of is ons al so gekondisioneer dat ons alles net stilweg aanvaar?

Why speed limit?

Is it really necessary for the speed limit on Saxdown Road to be 60km/h or is this just another way for the traffic department (whom we never see in Kuils River anyway) to make some money on fines. It is so difficult to stay within this 60km/h limit on this long road which does not actually go through any suburbs – so why this speed limit?

God bless you at Karl Bremer Exactly a year ago my wife was rushed to Karl Bremer Hospital and was in a coma for 16 days.

We as family prayed day and night for her to stay with us. We were told that she was the sickest person at the time.

It was so hard to accept what is happening. She picked up some virus.

I will always remember day 16. That day she opened her eyes.

To the doctors and nursing staff of the emergency ward, ICU and high care at the hospital, I will never ever forget all the efforts and running around doing everything in your power to save the life of my wife of 40 years.

Pools in appalling state It is nothing less than damning and despicable that those who made use of the Goodwood swimming pool, those who came from near and far and many who queued for more than three hours before opening time, were subjected to its appalling state.

The wooden beams, on which shade cloth once upon a time afforded shade, are in a pathetic state. The paint peeling, rot and broken windowpanes make it unsightly. The state of the entire area in front of the pool was raised with ward councillors years ago. They have done nothing! Yet again the Elsies River pool was inaccessible to its inhabitants and again the local councillor is not concerned. I have it on good authority that the pool is not going to be opened again.

Hence, hordes will stream to Goodwood. However, from what I witnessed, full compliments must go to the City employees who were on duty.

They were an example to those in council who blatantly does not give a damn.

I would really like to know why the cars of people (definitely not disabled) are not being clamped for parking in disabled parking spots at various shopping centres.

Two shopping centres in Kuils River are known for not clamping down on these selfish culprits. Please do it and start clamping these cars.

It really enrages a person when you see quite capable people parking in those disabled parking spots. What will happen one day is that road rage will turn into disabled parking rage.

Over-50s Cricket World Cup ahead F

ollowing the success of the inaugural o.50s Cricket World Cup in Australia in 2018, the tournament’s second staging is in Cape Town in March 2020 will draw teams from 12 nations to our shores.

Cricket Hall of Fame inductee and former Protea fast bowler Allan Donald has joined as the head coach of South Africa’s o.50s side. When eight national teams gathered in Sydney in November 2018 for the first o.50s Cricket World Cup, expectations were cautious with no previous experience of such an event.

Three weeks later, after Australia had beaten Pakistan by just three runs in a nailbiting climax, the verdict was crystal clear: this event had to become a regular fixture on the global cricket calendar, with Cape Town as the next host. Tournament director Roger Moult says the twelve national teams who will compete for the cup between 11 and 24 March, include newcomers West Indies, India, Zimbabwe and Namibia, who join Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, Wales, Canada, and South Africa. The event forms part of the mission of the Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa’s (VCASA) to keep older cricketers in the game.

“Just because you have passed a certain age doesn’t mean you have lost your skills or passion for cricket. The Over-50s tournament in Sydney was a case in point - we even had a few Over-60s on the field,” says Moult.

Donald (52) agrees wholeheartedly and would have been playing, subject to selection, had a shoulder injury not ruled him out of contention. “Retiring doesn’t mean you must stop doing what you love most. Retiring means you should continue doing what

you love most,” says the man who was ranked number one in the ICC Test rankings and number two in ODIs in 1998. Donald played 72 Tests and finished with 330 wickets, the most for his country at the time, when he retired in 2002. Only Dale Steyn (439), Shaun Pollock (421) and Makhaya Ntini (390) have surpassed him.

“I can’t wait to get started. I have remained active from the day I retired and have coached around the world, including stints in the IPL and with the national teams of England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and, of course, my beloved South Africa,” says Donald.

“We’ll give everything to win the World Cup, it’s great to have a second chance – or a fifth chance in my case – but it’s also about making new friends and sharing new experiences in the second half of life,” he says.

Five other South African cricket legends of yesteryear have enthusiastically accepted appointments as tournament ambassadors.

They are Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards, Omar Henry, Peter Kirsten and Mike Proctor. “Donald’s story shows that one can remain active and play sports as one matures and that these are key ingredients to a healthy, happy post-retirement life,” says Arthur Case, brand marketing director of Evergreen Retirement Holdings, the event’s sponsor.

Moult adds there are more benefits to keeping mature cricketers on the field, over and above individual health benefits.

“Keeping older players in the game, instead of seeing them leave once they hit their late thirties, is good for our cricket club environment as it results in more members,” he explains.

Die universiteite van Wes-Kaapland, Maties, Kovsies, Noordwes, Ikeys, Wits, CUT, UJ en Tukkies is almal in aksie in die Varsitybeker.

Die Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie (KSUT) is die Kaapse verteenwoordiger in die Varsityskild en kom te staan teen Rhodes, Walter Sisulu, Fort Hare, KwaZulu-Natal, NMMU (Madibaz) en die Tswane Universiteit van

Tegnologie (TUT). Dié kompetisie begin op Valentynsdag op Vrydag 14 Februarie.

Die Varsityskild vier ook sy tiende bestaansjaar en opwindende rugby word verwag.

Durbanville (172) moes kwaai walgooi om ’n nederlaag teen Kaapstad (172) af te weer, met die beste bydraes deur Janneman Malan (48) en Nathan Swartz (4/18) terwyl UWK (125) eweneens moes spook om gelykop te speel teen WP-klub (125).

Erinn Ewerts (4/12) en Givon Christians (48) het vir die studentespan uitgeblink.

Nadat skitterende kolfwerk deur Lee-Roy Walters (84) Brackenfell na ’n skaflike telling van 195 gevoer het, kon die Brakke se boulers egter nie veel hond haaraf maak teen die kolwers van Claremont (196/3) nie.

Die groot verrassing Saterdag was Bellville (248/7) se sege oor Rondebosch (225/7) – danksy

veral Schaughn van Greunen (83) en Leon van Vuuren (51*), maar Sondag in ’n tweede wedstryd het Bellville (69) met die keersy van die muntstuk te doen gekry teen UWK (73/5).

In ’n buurmanstryd in die eerste liga was Kraaifontein (167/6) gans te sterk vir Kuilsrivier (89) met Craig Thyssen (52*), Eugene Zwart (46) en Orin Kotze (4/23) almal mooi op stryk vir die Kraaie. Tygerberg-klub (194) het sy wendroogte gebreek teen Gugulethu (162) met behulp van waardevolle bydraes deur Nabeel Abrahams (43) en Jancan Adams (4/27).

Maximillan Walter (65*) was aan die voorpunt van Milnerton (120/3) se afrekening met Primrose (118), terwyl NoordelikesGoodwood (142/3) ook met sewe paaltjies teen United (141) geseëvier het. Fronic Kasner (54*) het ’n groot aandeel aan die sege gehad. Maar Edgemead se nagmerrie-seisoen duur steeds voort ná nog ’n uitklophou, hierdie keer met 112 lopies deur Rylands (162). – Sarel Burger
