Bothasig resident says despite the roll-out of the brand new green lid recycling wheelie bins being a step towards helping to save the environment, it also causes littering.

Community the losing party in CPF debacle DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

stalemate between provincial government and the provincial community policing board (CPB) is threatening to destabilise local community safety structures should middle ground not be found soon.

It stems from directives issued by the department earlier this year, which changes the voting rights that were adopted by individual community policing forums (CPF) in accordance with national legislation.

This resulted in provincial police commissioner Lt Genl Sindile Mfazi to on 30 October place a moratorium on CPF annual meetings across the province, where new executives would have been voted into office for the next five-year term; this after the CPB called on the police commissioner for intervention.

Provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, last week called on Lt Genl Mfazi to lift this moratorium and allow communities to elect their leadership.

He also called on all CPFs in the province to abide by his directives and guidelines.

“These directives were issued to allow for all community based organisations including neighbourhood watches (NHW), nongovernmental organisations and the religious fraternity to participate in CPFs at the station-level,” he said in a statement.

He is of the opinion that the current Uniform Constitution for CPFs in the Western Cape, drafted in 2010, is now outdated. “(The UC) is no longer aligned with current legislation, particularly the Civilian Secretariat for Police Act and the Western Cape Community Safety Act,” he stated.

He expressed concern that this outdated constitution is being used by a few within the CPB to side-line community based organisations in terms of voting rights.

“Historically, these provisions have resulted in a lack of representation of NHWs and community structures on CPFs, in turn, causing much tension,” said Fritz.

According to Fritz the constitution is not aligned with the spirit of the Western Cape Community Safety Act, which aims to make CPFs inclusive of all community based organisations.

He added that the department’s directives were issued within the ambit of the legislative powers of the province, after much consultation and confirmation from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the national civilian secretariat for police and from the police.

Sean McCleland, chair of the Tygerberg cluster CPB, says Fritz’s statement is misleading.

“Firstly, the IEC is a political organisation and has no mandate to moderate functions or elections within a CPF. Secondly, the provincial commissioner, after consultation with the CPB, did not confirm the department directives as claimed by Fritz and thirdly, the constitution does not apply only to certain organisations or cultural structures. It applies to every safety organisation, both within government and community based within respective communities.

“Furthermore, the department is acting outside of their legal mandate in terms of the Constitution of the Republic, which clearly shows no legal mandate and no responsibility on the department to issue directives. Legally, the role of department is to promote, assist and monitor police part-

nerships,” he says.

McCleland says the constitution by which CPFs are managed, was instituted and approved of by the department, the police and CPFs at its inception and is focused on the implementation of national laws, not provincial legislation.

“Legally speaking the department cannot dictate to CPFs and the question begs as to why they forget their legal mandate.

Why are they attempting to force this onto CPFs and what is their agenda?” says McCleland. “It is causing political infighting and internal friction that is weakening community safety.”

McCleland confirmed that the CPB and the provincial police commissioner in a meeting on 16 November agreed that CPF annual meetings and elections will only proceed next year between 20 January and 28 February and will take place in terms of the constitution and not department directives.

The department was notified of this meeting, but did not show up and confirmed their refusal to attend the meeting, according to McCleland.

Fritz, on the other hand, continued to say it was unfortunate “that the functionality of all 151 CPFs in the Western Cape is now compromised because of a dysfunctional few”.

In reply to Fritz, McCleland said, “it is because of the attempts by the department to dictate to CPFs that this very problem has occurred, even although the department is admittedly way outside of its legal mandate”. “Let me explain it like this. The City collects refuse from residents and supplies a black refuse bin. The City does not supply the black bag to put in the bin and no resident throws their rubbish directly into their black bin – they all put it into some kind of bag whether a black bag or other bag.

“Likewise, the City has supplied ward 5 and parts of ward 1 with a free recycling bin.

The contract to collect it has been awarded to WastePlan. Neither the City nor WastePlan are obligated to provide bags.

However, it is advisable to place the recycling in a clear plastic bag in order to maintain some level of hygiene, as well as to prevent items from flying around in the wind,”

Carstens explains.

She says she has pursued kerbside recycling in ward 5 for five years.

“The advice is to put the recycling items in a bag. This also makes it easier to collect, as recycling is currently not an automated service like refuse collection is.

“It is done manually and it makes sense that it would be easier and faster to empty the bag onto the trailer truck,” Carstens says.

All waste collected in green lid wheelie bins are transported to the Kraaifontein Materials Recovery Facility.

“Although many residents in my ward have been recycling privately for many years, it is a new concept to many of the other residents,” Carstens say.

“I understand that it is something good the council is trying to do, that we need to recycle. The idea is fantastic and people are recycling, but it is littering our streets.

“Look it is still new, and people will say it is fine for now, but I foresaw this happening,” Anderson adds.

The bins are emptied by WastePlan on Thursdays.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Cathy van der Westhuizen, said they do not provide the bins. “The bins are supplied and delivered by the City of Cape Town,” she says.

Schools learn how to live smart The Two Oceans Aquarium and the City of Cape Town recently hosted a five-day Smart Living course, for Grade 7 learners from different schools.

This included a session on waste and a visit to the Kraaifontein integrated waste management facility. “It was a real revelation to most of the students to see what happens to some of Cape Town’s waste,” a statement from the aquarium reads.

Back at the aquarium, the learners spoke about different types of waste and their sources, as well as which types of materials are recyclable. They then did a waste sorting activity and further learned about ways to minimise and manage waste. Part of the course included a visit to the Green Point urban park to get some hands-on contact with the city’s biodiversity. On completion of the course, the learners wrote a final assessment.

Grade 7 learners from Blackheath, Durbanville, Panorama and Vredelust primary schools visited the Kraaifontein intergrated waste management facility where they saw how waste is processed.

Childline welcomes child porn conviction RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

local non-profit organisation (NPO) who works with vulnerable children welcomed the conviction of a man found guilty of being in possession of child pornography.

The convicted Dawid Lotz from Malmesbury was handed down a 10-year prison sentence at the Parow regional court on Monday 18 November.

Lotz worked as a control prosecutor at the Atlantis magistrate’s court until three years ago.

Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson of the National Prosecuting Authority told TygerBurger that Lotz resigned from the NPA in December 2016.

Childline Western Cape, who works with children who either are at risk of, or who have experienced sexual abuse and, or trauma and who has offices in Parow, say they are glad for any conviction and sentencing in cases which involves the possession of child pornography.

“It sends out a clear message that child pornography is a crime, and should be reported to the police.

“We are pleased to note that the many efforts being made to bring awareness to this issue, are bearing fruit,” Cheryl Morilly, deputy director, says.

She encourages parents and caregivers to be involved in their children’s social media activities and to talk about the dangers of sharing photos on social media.

Most people pack up and go on holiday during December. It is for this reason, the police say people should best be extra careful.

WO Jacques Mostert, Bothasig police spokesperson says, when leaving on holiday, it is a good idea to inform a neighbour – that way someone can keep an eye on your property.

He says neighbours will spot any irregular activity at your property which they can report to the police.

Mostert also provided some safety hints for the holiday season: . Do not let strangers enter your house to make telephone calls. Take their details through the locked security gate and make the call on their behalf. . When you see suspicious people or vehicles, contact the police. Even if it is a false alarm, the police visibility might scare off potential criminals. . Do not go outside and leave the security gates open, especially if you do not have the door in your sight. Rather lock the gate and unlock it when you re-enter. . Before leaving, ensure that you have burglar bars installed as a first line of defence. . Ensure that security gates are installed at the front and back doors. . Install security lights around your home. . Secure sliding doors so that it cannot be lifted off the tracks. . Do not hide keys outside your premises; rather give them to someone trustworthy.

Ntabazalila says the 44-year-old Lotz was sentenced to a 10-year direct imprisonment of which three years were suspended for five years.

He was found in possession of 125 images of child pornography.

Lotz was also sentenced to three years direct imprisonment for sexual assault which was suspended for five years.

Capt Frederick van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson, says the police are pleased with the outcome.

The matter was investigated by the police’s provincial family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit.

The unit was made aware of Lotz being in possession of child pornography in October 2016.

According to Van Wyk the offices at the Atlantis magistrate’s court as well as the convict’s house were searched.

“Exhibits were seized by the provincial cyber crime unit,” Van Wyk explains.

Lotz first appeared in court on 31 December 2016 on charges of the possession of child pornography and sexual assault.

A further order is made that his name be recorded in the sexual offences register and that he is found unfit to work with children and also unfit to possess a firearm, police say.

Partnership leads to arrests The Bothasig police recently arrested a group of suspected burglars with the help of an “eagle-eyed” resident.

WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson, says three suspected burglars are now behind bars.

On the day of the arrests Sgt Reggie Mars and his colleague, Sgt Elton Baron, were on patrol when they received a call from radio control regarding a possible burglary.

“The members immediately responded.

They were met by a local resident who informed them about the suspicious characters at a house in Van Riebeeck Street, Bothasig.

The police went to the house where they noticed a broken bedroom window and burglar bars which was bent inward,” Mostert says.

Police seek help in culpable homicide case

Bothasig police are seeking help in a culpable homicide case on the N7 highway. On Thursday 14 November at about 18:30 police attended an incident where a 36-year-old motorist died after being hit by a car while changing a flat tyre in the emergency lane, in the direction of Goodwood, opposite Richwood. The vehicle which struck the motorist did not stop at the scene.

They also noticed movement inside the house.

“They searched the house and found three unknown men hiding in the bathroom,” Mostert explains.

The men were in possession of a bag containing property, which seemed to be stolen from the house.

The suspects are aged 19, 34 and 36 years.

According to the police they are from Gugulethu and Nyanga.

The trio appeared in the Goodwood magistrate’s court.

Lt Col Patrick Jacobs, station commander, praised the police members for arresting the men and the resident who called them when noticing something was wrong.

irst Business Wellness (FBW) is launching its breakfast club, to reach out to entrepreneurs.

The breakfast club aims to create awareness of compliance, ethics and accountability among small medium enterprises (SMEs).

The launch will take place at Blowfish restaurant, Dolphin Beach, 1 Marine Drive, Table View at 08:30 on Thursday 5 December.

Entry to the event is R120.

This month’s event is open, but future events will be for FBW members and their guests only.

The First Business Wellness Association, a non-profit company, was formed to offer a holistic service to the small and mediumsized business sector (SME).

This is often overwhelming for the entrepreneur and they simply won’t be able to wear all hats and be competitive in the marketplace,” he says.

“Vier nuwe oefenplekke word gebou en twee opelug-gimnasiums in wyk 1 is ook opgeknap,” sê Visser.

Die wyk se 2019/20-begroting is gebruik om die projek te finansier.

“Insette van mense van oor die hele wyk 1 is in ag geneem.”

Die reeds voltooide opelug-gimnasiums is geleë in die Alk van Zyl-park (tussen Hennie Winterbachstraat, Alk van Zyl-rylaan en Constantiastraat in Panorama), sowel as by die openbare park op die hoek van

Malmesbury- en La Provence-pad in Welgelegen.

Die park op die terrein van die Richwoodgemeenskapsaal in Richwood-rylaan is ook pas voltooi.

Nog ’n park, die Eendedam-park in Olienhout-rylaan, Plattekloof is byna voltooi.

Opknapwerk word ook in sekere parke gedoen.

Dit sluit in Camoens-park in Monte Vista en nog ’n park in die Malmesbury-pad in Welgelegen.

“Ons het probeer om die oefenplekke so te plaas dat dit goed verspreid is en die maksimum inwoners of besoekers die voordeel van die gebruik daarvan kan geniet,” sê sy.

“Wat wonderlik is, is die spangees oor die hele wyk 1 en dat verskillende woongebiede se rolspelers omgee vir die groter wyk.

“Ek wil graag dankie sê vir die hulp en betrokkenheid van inwoners.

“Mense moet hul parke gebruik en ek hoop die nuwe toerusting sal tot ’n gesonde lewenstyl bydra,” sê Visser.

Inwoners van wyk 1 kan ’n bietjie ekstra gewig afskud by enige van die nuwe opelug-gimnasiums wat dwarsoor die gebied aangebring of opgeknap is. Dié oefenplek is in die Alk van Zyl-park in Panorama.

fter completing thousands of kilometres on his bicycle to help raise awareness for Klinefelters syndrome, Stephen Malherbe is back home.

The Bothasig resident set out from Philadelphia on his planned six-week journey around the Western Cape on Saturday 5 October. He visited several health clinics in the towns he cycled through where he distributed pamphlets around Klinefelters syndrome.

Malherbe planned on visiting 47 towns.

Asked about his journey and the challenges he experienced along the way, Malherbe told TygerBurger that for the most part it was smooth sailing.

“There were no real difficulties, the biggest challenge was just the lack of funds.”

A fundraiser was held for him at the Edgemead community hall on Friday 8 November.

“I feel I have broadened my mind and my eyes have been opened in so many ways.”

Malherbe says he achieved his goal, but that he would have liked to have done more.

“Unfortunately I only completed 40 towns when the funds had run out. My partner collected me from Franschhoek in

Stephen Malherbe from Bothasig cycled across the Western Cape to raise awareness around Klinefelters syndrome.

Malherbe Street, which is ironically my surname.” His partner, Caryn Allwright, said earlier that she kept in touch with him and recorded his journey on Facebook.

Awareness around Klinefelter syndrome, he says, is something that should be done more widely.

Malherbe, who has undertaken several such challenges in the past, says there are things about the trip he will miss.

“I loved the quietness and peace in the countryside. I am struggling a bit at the moment.”

Klinefelters syndrome has symptoms along the Autism spectrum. Many people with Klinfelters syndrome have communication problems due to language development issues. “Constant health problems have plagued me all my life.”

Some of the towns he visited include Darling, Langebaan, Hopefield, Moorreesburg, Riebeeck Kasteel, Tulbagh and Ceres.

Water restrictions to be reconsidered DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

F

ollowing mayor Dan Plato’s statement earlier this year, that water restrictions would be reconsidered in October, the City last week stated that a decision over this must still be made in consultation with the national department of water and sanitation (DWS) and all users of the Western Cape water supply system.

DWS have scheduled a meeting for the end of November, in which their modelling for the region’s next hydrological year will be presented for consideration and discussion,” said Mayco member for water and

waste Xanthea Limberg,” in a statement to the media on 18 November.

She said the City can’t pre-empt the outcome of the meeting, but will advise residents after consultations have taken place.

According to Limberg, dam levels have decreased by 0.5% over the previous week and are currently at 83.7%.

“Water consumption for the same period was slightly down, falling from 675 million litres/day to 674 million litres/day.

Currently the consumption target for the City is 650 million litres/day,” she added.

“Although our surface water supply is markedly higher ahead of summer 2019/’20 than it has been in recent years, residents

should keep in mind that rainfall for winter 2019 was again below average. This is the fifth year running this has been the case, as reflected in City graphs.”

In response to this statement, Sandra Dickson of the civic organisation Stop Coct, said the City is using the same rhetoric as last year.

“First Plato said restrictions would be reconsidered in October, but now they say November. As was the case last year, the City now says they have to wait upon DWS to lift restrictions.

“If the City could implement water restrictions unilaterally and increase tariffs, why must they now wait for DWS to de-

crease it? she said.

Dickson says the City last year implemented a 30% water reduction, while DWS only asked for 10%, resulting in the 650ML consumption target, which was exceeded by about 25ML only for the last three weeks. “It is simply outrageous and indicates that the City thinks the public will not see it. They have double standards, which only benefits the City.”

Dickson adds that should restrictions be reduced to the lower level, the public would be paying 49 cents per KL less.

Hoe lank hou ’n World Cup-babelas?

Diegene wat al erg deur babelas gekasty is, sal weet dat daar nie ’n erger siekte as wingerdgriep is nie.

Sommige ouens raak so siek dat hulle voel hulle kan sterf. Die kop pyn, die maag is ontsteld en alles irriteer jou. Alle reuke maak jou naar, veral kos.

Nou die laaste paar weke het ek ’n vreeslike babelas. Gelukkig darem nie die dranksoort nie, maar wel rugby-babelas.

Met die wêreldbekerrugby het ek letterlik elke dag rugby gelewe.

Van voor die toernooi begin het, het ek al die programme oor rugby gekyk – ou wedstryde, dokumentêre programme, onderhoude met oudspelers, onderhoude met huidige spelers, plaaslike en oorsese ontledingsprogramme.

Daarna het ek elke rugbystorie in die koerante verslind. Oorsese koerante het ek aanlyn gelees om beter perspektief te kry oor wat ander mense van die Springbokke dink. In meeste gevalle het ek my vervies omdat die Bokke nie ’n kans gegun is nie.

Ek dink nie daar is meer iets te sê oor die euforie wat die land oorval het toe die Bokke uiteindelik met die gesogte trofee huis toe kom nie. Koerante het elke storie uitgewring wat oor die Bokke geskryf kon word. Onderhoude is gevoer met spelers se ouers en grootouers en ooms en tantes en predikante en honde en katte. Ons weet nou dat Faf de Klerk van Bokbloemer-faam eens op ’n tyd in ’n skoolkonsert opgetree het en dat Damian de Allende se broer die week ná die toernooi getrou het. Elke aspek van die seëvierende span se lewe gaan in die volgende paar maande ontleed word. Dít is in die kind se belang Ek is ’n gekwalifiseerde en geregistreerde maatskaplike werker. Hiermee my professionele opinie en kommer oor die koerantberig “Rugbyafrigter kry trekpas ná onwelvoeglike optrede” (TygerBurger, 6 November).

Ingevolge die huidige Kinderwet en die Wet op Seksuele Misdrywe kan enige individu in die gemeenskap ’n beweerde seksuele oortreding teenoor ’n kind by die polisie aanmeld. Dit is belangrik om kennis te neem dat die beweerde oortreding, die strafregtelike ondersoek, hofverrigtinge en die regsbeslissing deur die hof nog steeds in die beste belang van die kind bly al word die beweerde oortreder ook onskuldig bevind.

Dus stem ek nie saam met dr. Theron wanneer hy sê dit is moeilik om te sê wat in elke kind se beste belang is nie.

Ingevolge die wetgewing kan die betrokke skool ’n strafregtelike klag aanhangig maak en is dit die wetlike verantwoordelikheid van die polisie om die klagte te ondersoek en die saak voor die hof te bring, selfs in ’n situasie waar dit nie die keuse van die kinders se primêre versorgers is nie.

Wetgewing en selfs huidige skolebeleid regverdig en beskerm die skool in hierdie verband. Volgens die berig is die rugbyafrigter deur ’n onafhanklike party in ’n interne tugverhoor skuldig bevind. Hierdie bevestiging is myns insiens bo redelike twyfel ’n sterk aanduiding vir genoegsame gronde vir ’n strafregtelike klag. Aan die ander kant kan die versuim om ’n strafregtelike klag in te dien ook geïnterpreteer word as ’n oortreding van die Kinderwet en die Wet op

Seksuele Misdrywe.

My verdere kommer is dat die rugbyafrigter uit sy pos by die skool ontslaan is, maar heel moontlik verdere kontak gaan hê met ander kinders omdat daar tans geen wetlike buffer is om verdere kontak met kinders te vermy nie. Die Kinderwet het duidelike beskermingsprosesse vir kinders teen oortreders wat strafregtelik skuldig bevind is, soos die registrasie van die skuldige op die nasionale register vir kinderbeskerming en seksuele oortredings.

My addisionele kommer is dat daar ’n sielkundige, ’n maatskaplike werker en ’n staatsaanklaer by hierdie situasie van die skool betrokke was en dit vir my voorkom asof die kinders deur die reg gefaal is en die oortreder wetlik skotvry hiervan afkom. Die moontlikheid bly dat ander kinders deur hierdie rugbyafrigter se sielkundig disfunksionele en patologies afwykende gedrag getraumatiseer kan word.

MAATSKAPLIKE WERKER E-pos

Taxis in control of our roads I wonder who is in control of the Western Cape and who controls the roads.

I live in Sonkring, and daily I use Blackberry Road to gain access to Cecil Morgan Road.

This is a scary place in the mornings because although the taxis are not supposed to stop there, they park in the yellow line blocking the view for both directions, as well as blocking Blackberry Road for us.

There are people crossing the road to and from the Checkers/Shoprite storage facility which makes entering the road more treacherous.

The people who say that

this problem does not exist do not monitor that road early mornings.

When will the authorities take heed? Or are we waiting for an accident to happen first?

Why not at least put a traffic light there or provide a taxi rank which might at least help people to be able to avoid oncoming traffic?

Who is in control?

It seems that taxi drivers and their owners control the streets of Cape Town and surrounding areas.

Kinders openlik dronk by konsert Ons was die naweek as ’n gesin na Liefde by die dam, of eerder “Drank vir tieners by die dam”.

Sommige mense sê tye verander en ons moet daarby aanpas, maar ek het nog nooit soveel minderjariges openlik dronk by ’n openbare geleentheid gesien nie. Seer sekerlik is dit nie reg nie.

Wat veronderstel was om ’n gesinsgeleentheid te wees, het in ’n absolute dronknes ontaard. Daar was geen beheer oor aan wie drank verkoop is nie.

Twee wagte het nou en dan probeer om vir ’n ID te vra, maar dit het nie vrugte afgewerp nie.

Kinders van Durbanville het openlik geloop en drink – sommige van hul voete af, asof daar niks mee fout is nie.

Meisies van 15 tot 16 jaar het by die kroeg drank gekoop sonder enige moeite.

Na bewering het een van die bands ook die kinders aangepor om meer te drink.

As ’n ouer van twee jong kinders maak dit my baie bekommerd as dít is waarheen ons op pad is.

Librarian in Bellville ‘saved a life’ It’s 2019 and like so many other South Africans I have lost faith in our government on national, provincial and local levels. l have also lost all faith in myself and my purpose here on earth.

Today, Monday 18 November, I was prepared to end my life. My depression has sucked the last drop of joy I had. I have been living for everyone except for myself. I had to return some books for a friend as these were one of the obligations I was forced to undertake every few weeks.

Nonetheless, I was at my lowest, lowest point. But upon reaching the main counter at Bellville Library I was greeted by a young, friendly newbie (Chad or Shad) who continued to ask me if I enjoyed these books. And when he realized I wasn’t feeling too good instantly encouraged me to get a book on positive thinking. I thought why is this over-enthusiastic guy trying to convince me to read a stupid book? - as if that would help.

He then continued to make a joke about one of the books he had read. He explained the different parts of the library and spoke about his dreams of becoming the wealthiest assistant librarian in the world which surprisingly made me laugh, much to my delight. This was the first time all week I had not thought about ending my life, but rather considering signing up and joining a library.

This enthusiastic young man without knowing had stopped me from committing one of the biggest sins.

I thank the Almighty for allowing me to experience such a miracle. The world needs to know about this great young man.

or years Lego has enchanted children around the globe.

With movies, board games, robotics, books and even clothing, the humble brick has morphed into a multi-billion dollar industry.

In the background, it has also had a growing following of a different kind – adults.

No longer are parents doomed to unintentionally step on their children’s lego bricks and hurting themselves while barefoot.

These days grown-ups step on their own lego bricks.

These adults are called Afols - Adult Fans Of Lego. Increasingly these Afols are getting together to share their passion for the interlocking plastic brick.

The CapeLUG group (LEGO User Group) was formed in 2016 by Marick Hornsveld from Somerset West. The group now has 44 members from across the Cape.

They come together bi-monthly in Pinelands and have building competitions. Every other month they have a social gathering called Brickday.

Here members can share ideas and show what they’re working on.

In March 2019 the group was officially recognised by the Lego Group in Denmark and now CapeLUG has also achieved RLUG status in March 2019 (Recognised LEGO®️ User Group) that means CapeLUG is now recognised by the LEGO®️ Group in Denmark.

Elmar Wentzel, one of the members who lives in Malmesbury, says he finds his hobby very relaxing.

An engineer by day, he enjoys “following the instructions and creating something without thinking too much about it”.

He spends around seven to eight hours a week on it but says it’s not enough. He shares the hobby with his wife, Colleen, and together they have a separate room for their collection.

The cost of it all differs from person to person, he says.

“Like any hobby, it depends on yourself how extreme you want to go. It is a quality product and also has collector’s items.”

He realised he wasn’t the only adult who enjoys Lego around four years ago when he spent time in a toyshop looking at the product.

Here he met other shoppers and they started chatting about their passion.

Elmar says the biggest joy is when the group displays their goods at malls. “The expression on children’s faces during public displays - absolutely priceless!”

Your chance to see one of these displays in real life (and even sign up) is fast approaching. The next CapeLUG will be on 30 November from 9:00 to 16:00 at Willowbridge Shopping Centre.

Around 40 tables will display all sorts of Lego creations and organisers say this will be the biggest CapeLUG display to date.

Dit wissel van die Lykoi, die weerwolfkat wat as die skaarsste kat beskou word, tot die Elf, ’n haarlose kat met krulore, sowel as Siamese, Persiese katte, Britse korthaarkatte, Burmese en Abessynse katte.

Die kleinste katras ter wêreld, die Singapura, sowel as die grootste katras ter wêreld, die Maine Coon, sal ook teenwoordig wees. Daar is ook ’n afdeling vir gewone huiskatte.

Die katskou, wat deur die Cat Association of Southern Africa (Casa) aangebied word, is die laaste katskou in Suid-Afrika vanjaar. Die assosiasie is geaffilieer by die Wêreld-Kattefederasie (WCF).

Besoekers is welkom om van 09:00 tot 16:00 teen ’n klein toegangsfooi die katte te besigtig.

Daar sal ook ’n kiosk beskikbaar wees.

Music centre to host demonstration The Hugo Lambrecht Music Centre in Parow that offers lessons in a wide variety of orchestral instruments, including piano, guitar, voice and theory training, will be hosting a demonstration of all the instruments on offer, followed by general auditions next month.

Interested individuals will be able to try out and choose which instrument is best for them.

This takes place on Monday 2 December and Tuesday 3 December, at 17:00.

The centre offers tuition to learners of all ages.

“Over 30 years of music tuition has seen learners from the music centre embark on solo, orchestral and educational career paths both locally and abroad,” a spokesperson says.

The centre is proud of its four-string orchestras, threewind bands and symphony orchestra.

ollowing the first round of fixtures in the Cape Town Baseball Federation’s Major league, Bothasig Knights are atop of the standings.

Knights lead the league with 14 points after their emphatic 21-0 win over VOB Macaws on Saturday 23 November. They are followed by Bellville Tygers on 12, who beat Maitland Giants 9-4, who now find themselves in third place on the log, with 10 points.

Durbanville Villains and VOB Macaws have six points each, with Durbanville coming off a 13-2 win at the weekend against Van der Stel. They are followed by Athlone A’s on four, with Van der Stel on two with Grassy Park Crusader with zero points.

In the week’s featured game, Athlone A’s and Grassy Park Crusaders could not be separated after 10 innings of play in their Major league fixture at Vangate Sports Com-

plex on Saturday with score deadlocked at 11-all. Although A’s outhit Crusaders 14 hits to 12, Crusaders can’t be happy leaving 18 runners on base. A’s three pitchers gave up 15 walks.

Both teams’ utilised three pitchers, with A’s surprisingly starting with Matthew Diedericks. Diedericks pitched four innings and only gave up two hits, but a staggering nine walks and struck out four hitters.

He was replaced by former Crusaders pitcher Cameron Fortuin who came in for some heavy punishment conceding eight runs. He pitched three innings, giving up eight hits, walked four and struck out three.

Dean Jacobs took over from Fortuin.

For Crusaders Lucien Swartz pitched 3.2 innings before being replaced by former A’s lefty Niyaaz Galant. Grant Robertson took over in the eighth innings.
