S

enior citizens in Bothasig will soon be able to make use of a unique service which involves handymen, or women, coming to their homes to do DIY projects.

Derek Antonio Serra, a resident, is the founder of the initiative.

“The idea of starting a community handymen, handywomen group was prompted by

a Facebook post I saw before Christmas asking people to make a wish for something they needed, rather than wanted.

“An elderly lady commented that there were some elderly people who needed basic repairs done to their houses because they were either too old, or did not have the money to hire someone to help them,” Serra explains.

He launched the Handymen/Women initiative around Christmas 2019 with a similar

post, asking for volunteers to join.

“Once I had a reasonable workforce of around 15 people with a wide range of expertise, I decided to link the initiative to the Bothasig’ Residents Association (BRA) where I am a committee member,” Serra says.

He says the response on the various Facebook groups for Bothasig and surrounding areas have been overwhelming, with so many people wishing them well and supporting the idea.

Currently 24 volunteers have joined the group. They also have a WhatsApp group where Serra post requests for assistance which allows for easy communication with the volunteers.

“I plan to launch a few more initiatives during the year to build community spirit and to encourage residents to help one another.”

The Serra-family moved to Bothasig in 1965.

W

hile most 11-year-olds spend their free time playing sports or video games, one boy from Panorama prefers spending his time outdoors by heading to the mountains.

Jayden Peiser’s love for hiking is so big that he has now decided to undertake a challenge even some grown-ups may deem extreme – a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

The Panorama Primary School learner hopes that through this expedition in July, he can raise enough money for an animal charity, his mother, Anile, says.

“He loves fitness, the outdoors, hiking and totally loves animals,” Anile told TygerBurger.

She says the challenge combines everything he loves – hiking, but also raising money to help animals in need.

Jayden’s decision to raise money for animals in need originates from the family’s involvement with shelters.

“We are locally involved in Bella’s Guardian Angels and R.A.D. where we adopted our current dogs from.

“I climbed Kilimanjaro in 2017 with the Sandton SPCA, whom we are climbing with again this time around,” Anile says.

She says the family hikes as often as possible.

“We hike together as a family on weekends and in the holidays.

“December we spent our holiday in the Drakensberg where we did many hikes,” she says.

To prepare for his strenuous hike up the highest mountain on the African continent, Jayden will be doing rugby fitness training, spend some time in the gym with Anile as well as going on regular weekend hikes.

Making the trip with him in July will be his mother and 25 other climbers. “The company we are going with is Adventures Dynamics International and the expedition leader is the famous mountaineer Sean Disney.”

Anile says Jayden is prepared for the challenge ahead.

“He is confident that he will be fit enough by the time we leave, but he is slightly nervous about the unknown – how his body will react to altitude sickness and so on.”

The group will hike up Kilimanjaro from Saturday 18 to Saturday 25 July.

Jayden says climbing Kilimanjaro has been an absolute dream of his since the age of eight.

“Another part of this trip is our visit to a local school where the children of the porters who assist us on the mountain attend school.

“They are not as privileged as we are and every bit of funding or gently used goods that I can contribute, will hopefully make a difference in their lives,” Jayden said by word of his mother.

Gala dinner in aid of Mes

An annual gala dinner was held last Wednesday in aid of Mould Empower and Serve (Mes) in Cape Town.

Mes works with unemployed people and their current activities in Cape Town are mainly focused in the northern suburbs.

The premise of the organisation is stopping handouts and instead restoring dignity and having people reach their full potential.

Along with the Safe Space step-down shelter in Bellville, the Christian organisation also provides a job rehabilitation programme and skills workshops.

He encourages people in other areas to copy the idea. “I am happy to advise them on how best to launch it in their areas. South Africa is going through a tough time, and as communities, we will only survive if we help each other. No money is expected, only one’s time.”

Work for the elderly in need will be done on the following basis: . They can assist people aged 60 years and older who are Sassa card holders. . Each request for assistance will be assessed to establish the need of the elderly person. . In cases of extreme need no call-out fee or labour charge will be levied. relatives are also welcome to contact us on behalf of the needy elderly resident as well.

“I will come out and see what work needs to be done and then request assistance from our volunteers. We cannot guarantee assistance in all cases, but we will try our best to help,” says Serra.

A

giant tree that toppled over in Edgemead due to strong winds, caused major damage to a car parked underneath

it.

The incident occurred on Sunday 9 February around 17:30.

Fortunately there were no people inside the vehicle.

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s fire and rescue services, told TygerBurger that it was initially reported that there were two people trapped inside. “But upon investigating, the driver and the passenger were found not to be inside,” he says.

The incident occurred near the community centre in Edgemead Drive.

Matthew Canning, vice-chair of the Edgemead neighbourhood watch (ENW) confirmed the incident.

Fundraising four-ball for charities Rachel’s Wishes and Reach for a Dream are joining forces to host a charity four-ball golf day at the Durbanville Golf Club on Friday 3 April.

Their aim is to raise funds to fulfil the dreams of children and create their perfect dream day.

The Reach for a Dream Foundation has brought hope, joy and healing to the children’s wards of South African hospitals for 30 years.

However, the organisation rely heavily on events such as this to ensure that each of these dream days are as special and tailor-made as possible.

“There were no injuries reported when I got to the scene,” Canning told TygerBurger.

In a post on Facebook, ENW says all resources were on scene within minutes including some of their patrollers. The fire and rescue services began with the cleaning-up, by cutting the tree into pieces and removing it from the road, ENW says.

Fire and Rescue Services, responded to the call at 17:36, with Carelse adding that their firefighters from Goodwood and Milnerton were still on the scene at 18:44 to cut up the tree, and to ensure that the road was cleared for traffic. The road was re-opened at 18:45.

Tot in daardie stadium het hulle ten bate van die Paarlskool in Brackenfell fietsgery, maar die skool het destyds weens logistieke redes voorgestel hulle pak eerder die fietstoer namens ’n ander organisasie aan.

Toe die speke eers vir die DSAWC begin sing, was dit amper asof dit liefde met die eerste trapslag was.

Vanjaar gaan altesaam 11 fietsryers die 473 km-roete aandurf en via Bredasdorp en Mosselbaai na George ry.

Hulle spring op 24 Februarie weg en sal na verwagting op 28 Februarie by hul bestemming aankom.

Tussen-in gaan hulle op verskillende dorpe stop, waar hulle by skole gaan aanklop en bewustheid oor downsindroom kweek.

Die onderskeie skole hou dikwels hul eie insamelingsprojekte en skenk dan die geld aan die fietsryers om vir die DSAWC te gee.

Jodi Hendriks, ’n downsindroom-lyer, begelei hulle saam met enkele ander DSAWCpersoneellede. Hendriks, ’n groot Kurt Darren-liefhebber, lewer gewoonlik ’n klein vertoning.

Patrick Darlow sê die DSAWC word nie deur die staat ondersteun nie en het elke

sent nodig wat vir hulle ingesamel word.

Vanjaar is die eerste keer dat twee fietsryers van die onderneming Freightmore saam gaan trap.

Hulle is nie juis bekommerd oor hierdie uitdaging nie, vertel Brent Buckley van Freightmore.

“Dit is ’n voorreg en ’n eer (om hieraan deel te neem).”

Tineke Ganz-Malan, bestuurder van die Downsindroom-vereniging in die Wes-Kaap, sê dit is ’n voorreg om weer eens by die fietstoer betrokke te wees.

Dit gaan vir hulle meer oor bewusmaking as oor die geld, en om te wys “mense met downsindroom is maar net soos ons”.

Buiten geld benodig die DSAWC skenkings van onder meer kruideniersware, sjokolade, skyfies, sonroom, neute, kitshawermout, sap, lekkergoed en petrol.

ir die meeste ouers is die nuus dat jou kind aan kanker ly hartverskeurend.

Die meeste mense voel hulpeloos, maar sommige meen egter dat die ondersteuning wat hulle van familie en vriende ontvang, jou soms deur dié donker tonnel kan dra.

Vir die Humphrey-gesin van Scottsdene, Kraaifontein, is dit ’n werklikheid. Hul dogter, Nailah (14), was net 11 maande oud toe hulle meegedeel is dat hul eersteling aan Neoroblastoma-kanker ly.

Die gesin was op Vrydag 14 Februarie, ook Valentynsdag, gaste by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, waar Internasionale Kinderkankerdag herdenk is. ’n Spesiale geleentheid is gereël deur die Tygerberg-hospitaal se Kinderfonds- en Kinderkanker-stigting van Suid-Afrika (CHOC).

“As baba was haar ouma bedags vir haar versorging verantwoordelik. Haar ouma het agtergekom dat iets nie reg is nie. Ons het

haar toe na die dokter geneem,” vertel Nicolene (36), haar ma.

Haar pa, Steve (44), onthou ook Nailah het destyds baie gebraak.

“Sonars en skanderings is gedoen en ons het besef sy het kanker,” sê hy.

Nailah, ’n graad 9-leerder aan die Hoërskool Brackenfell, het chemoterapie ontvang en ’n operasie ondergaan om haar regternier te verwyder. Sy het nog vyf jaar lank as buitepasiënt vir toetse na die Tygerberghospitaal gegaan.

Eers rondom die ouderdom van ses jaar het sy normaal begin leef.

“Tot en met daardie tyd het sy nog gereeld vir hospitaalbesoeke gegaan,” vertel haar pa.

Sedertdien besoek sy net die nierkliniek.

“Dit was ’n moeilike tyd vir ons as gesin.

Jy moet sterk wees. Sy was nog net ’n baba.

“Ons moes vir berading gaan omdat ons nie presies geweet het wat die proses behels nie. Ons was jonk getroud, maar ons familie het ons ondersteun. Die ondersteuning by die werk was ook oorweldigend.

“Ons het gebid en ons is dankbaar dat ons vandag hier kan staan,” sê Nicolene.

Lizaan Hendricks, ’n inwoner van Our Pride in Eersterivier, ontvang ook ondersteuning van haar ma nadat kanker by haar 2-jarige baba, Renesmee, gediagnoseer is.

Sy en haar dogter was ook gaste by die herdenking Vrydagoggend by die hospitaal.

Renesmee is in Januarie 2019 gediagnoseer. “Sy het blou merke ontwikkel, haar maag het konstant gewerk, sy was alewig

Lizaan Hendricks, ’n inwoner van Our Pride in Eersterivier, is hier met haar dogter Renesmee, by wie verlede jaar kanker gediagnoseer is. Sy ontvang nog behandeling. Die ma en dogter het verlede week ’n geleentheid by die Tygerberg-hospitaal bygewoon om Internasionale Kinderkankerdag te herdenk. koorsig en het baie gebraak.

“Ek het haar na die kliniek geneem en hulle het eers gesê sy was net siek, en dat die blou merke net kneusmerke is.

“Ná ’n besoek aan die Eersterivier-hospitaal is ons egter na Tygerberg-hospitaal verwys, waar die dokters toetse uitgevoer het.

Sy is op 25 Januarie verlede jaar gediagnoseer,” vertel Lizaan.

Sy was geskok toe die dokters haar dié nuus meedeel. “Ek het gedog my kind gaan sterf. Ek het nie geweet dat kinders ook kanker kon kry nie.

“Ek was bewus van chemoterapie en het geweet wat dit aan ’n mens doen omdat my oupa daardeur moes gaan. Renesmee was eg-

Van die tekens waarvoor ouers en voogde moet uitkyk by kinders sluit in abnormale bloeding, abnormale swelling en wit merke op die oog, onverklaarbare koors, gewigsverlies, pyn, hoofpyn, braking en moegheid.

Die Tygerberg-hospitaal samel tans geld in vir die modernisering van sy pediatriese onkologie-eenheid met behulp van Tygerberg-hospitaal se Kindertrust.

Sedert 2014 is daar ’n toename in kinders by wie kanker gediagnoseer word.

Skoolmeisie slaggereed vir kolf: Kayla Fourie (11), ’n gr. 6-leerder aan die Laerskool Monte Vista, is onlangs gekies om haar skool te verteenwoordig as eerste en enigste meisie vir ’n krieketwedstryd.

Sy neem hierdie naweek weer aan ’n wedstryd deel. “Dis ’n unieke prestasie as die eerste meisie in Monte Vista se geskiedenis, wat in ’n seunskrieketspan haar skool verteenwoordig,” sê Piet Phyfer, haar oupa. Kayla was van kleins af reeds lief vir krieket.

More babies blessed by charity organisation ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme The Bless-a-Baby charity organisation in Durbanville have recently upped its service to 360 bags a month – with a total of 90 more families which benefit weekly.

One of the new mothers blessed was Tharly Adams, who recently gave birth to twin boys, Cameron and Clinton. They were born prematurely four weeks ago; their due date was only in February.

“She gave birth at Tygerberg Hospital and is currently at Eerste River giving kangaroo care to the boys until they are big enough to go home,” says Glynne Rosselli, head of the Bless-a-Baby team.

“It’s a very difficult and slow process and she needs all the help and support she can get.

“We recently visited her to deliver two Bless-a-Baby bags full of essentials for the twins plus some goodies for her, so the boys can concentrate on growing stronger and bigger. Tharly can now nurture her boys and doesn’t have to worry about provision,” Rosselli says.

Bless-a-Baby was started in October 2002 after the founder, Judy McCallum, realised that some babies who are born at local hospitals, go home without any covering, clothing or basic toiletries. In some cases they were wrapped in newspaper when discharged.

Bless-a-Baby is a group of women who meet every week to sew nappy bags and fill them with the basics such as nappies, clothes, knitted items and toiletries.

The bags are distributed at eight hospitals or clinics: Karl Bremer Hospital, Kraaifontein Day Hospital, Tygerberg Hospital, Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis, Durbanville Clinic, Paarl Hospital, Mowbray Maternity Hospital and Delft Maternity and Obstetrics Unit.

Tharly Adams, who recently gave birth to premature twin boys, smiles after receiving two bags from Bless-A-Baby.

“Our bags make a big difference in the lives of moms who have to go through difficult situations and circumstances to care for their babies,” Rosselli says.

They provide two types of bags with essential goodies for moms and babies – a comprehensive Bag of Love, which is valued at R600, and an emergency Bag of Hope, which is valued at R300.

“In addition, we provide a Bag of Dignity for the mom who needs to be clean and feel good about herself to look after her baby. This is valued at R135.”

To maintain this output, Bless-a-Baby is needing help.

“Bless-a-Baby depends on companies, churches and private people to donate either products or money. There are no administration charges, thus all goods and money donated go directly to the moms and babies.

arow residents have been warned to be vigilant at night when the lights go out due to load shedding.

The local community policing forum (CPF) feels that this is also the time criminals are more active.

“With the ongoing power outages please make sure your alarm’s battery back-up is working. Also be vigilant as thieves capitalise on these vulnerable moments.

“Be extra alert for suspicious individuals or noise around your home,” part of the CPF’s Facebook post made last week reads.

Roger Cannon, CPF chair, told TygerBurger that this is unfortunately something residents should pay attention to.

In the post, residents are also encouraged to report anything suspicious to their security company, neighbourhood watch or to the police. They are further encouraged to fit solar powered lights around their home to add some light for visibility during power outages.

“There has not yet been an incident that occurred but we think it is important that people are made aware – that during the time of loadshedding there are criminal activities that do take place,” Cannon says.

He says people should not think that criminals are not smart. “They will use this opportunity. They already know at what time the power goes out. They also have smart phones. Coupled with your house lights being off, the streetlights are also down and the alarm goes off. Therefore it is important to have a back-up battery in order to keep it working,” he says.

He says people should also pay attention to dogs barking when it is dark.

“Especially when they bark continuously. A dog will also go to the area where there is activity, so pay attention. It might mean that something, or someone is there.”

Cannon says they have picked up that when there is a noise, most people will turn over and continue to sleep. “But please go and check what the cause was, because far too often people think ‘it is not here by me,’ but it could be that something happened elsewhere down the road and that the culprit is jumping over your wall. So always go and check.

“When things like this happen, please report it to the police, the neighbourhood watch or a security company.”

He adds, “I also encourage people to create a WhatsApp group. This will help indeed.

In my area we have an emergency WhatsApp group and anybody can put something on it. Most of the time when I put something on, people jump into their cars to come and assist.”

He emphasises that homeowners shoud install solar powered lights in their gardens. Cannon says Parow is an area where there are a lot of vagrants, especially along the N1 and McIntyre Street.

Só dra jy jou welvaart suksesvol oor “Pa koop, ek bou, my kinders verkoop, my kleinkinders het leë hande,” lui die Skotse gesegde.

Die suksesvolle oordrag van familiewelvaart is nie vir almal beskore nie. Die belangrikste redes hoekom die meeste familie-fortuine verdwyn – oor drie generasies heen, is weens die uiteenlopendheid van: . die familie se missie, waardes en geloofsoortuigings; . die beleggingsdoelwitte (fokus verskuif dikwels van ’n groei/opportunistiese na bewaring/konserwatiewe oogmerk); . die familie se intellektuele of hulpbronkapasiteit; . lewenstyl (eens konserwatief na uitspattig).

Elke suksesvolle familiebesigheid het sy eie fassinerende storie van unieke waagmoed, maar daar is sekere universele riglyne wat ons kan toepas op ons eie welvaartbeplanningstrategie. Hier volg ’n paar sleutelkonsepte vir oorweging met intergenerasiewelvaartskepping, gebaseer op insigte van James E. Hughes Junior in sy boek Family Wealth.

Beoefen spandinamika Ouers en grootouers se finansiële planne word dikwels deurmekaargekrap as gevolg van gades, kinders, asook broers en susters wat weens omstandighede finansieel in die moeilikheid beland (egskeiding, aflegging of siekte). Families is ’n eenheid van individue, wie se welstand interafhanklik is van mekaar en daarom is dit nodig om meer omvattende familiewelvaartbeplanning te doen.

Skep ’n positiewe missieverklaring Begin met jou familie ’n proses van ontdekking rondom jou eie missie, waardes en oortuigings. Dokumenteer, kommunikeer en belyn hierdie inhoud ook met diegene wat deel uitmaak van jou intergenerasie-welvaartplan. Hierdie missieverklaring behoort toeganklik te wees vir alle familielede. Die welstand (nie net finansieel nie) van elke familielid binne hierdie raamwerk is die sleutel vir hul voortbestaan, oor generasies heen.

Intergenerasie-welvaartbeplanning Baie min besigheidsbedrywighede begin met intergenerasie-beplanning. Dit is belangrik om vroeg, soos wat eksponensiële besigheidsukses sigbaar raak, intergenerasie-welvaartbeplanning te doen.

Die voordeel vir toekomsgenerasies om op vorige generasies se momentum voort te bou, moenie onderskat word nie.

Intergenerasie-welvaartbeplanning behels beplanning vir die eerste generasie (korttermyn), tweede generasie (mediumtermyn) en die derde generasie (langtermyn). Die geweldige klemverskuiwing kan nie genoeg benadruk word nie.

Ontwerp ’n raamwerk vir besluitneming ’n Verantwoordbaarheidsraamwerk moet vir die familie geskep word, waarbinne persoonlike verskille besleg kan word, selfs in die afwesigheid van die stigterslid. Die ontwerp en doeltreffendheid van hierdie raamwerk gaan ’n deurslaggewende rol speel in die suksesvolle oordrag van familiewelvaart na toekomstige generasies. Begin vroegtydig jou familielede betrek by jou familie se finansiële besluite.

Professionele raad Elke individu in ’n familie dra iets unieks (nie net finansieel nie) by wat ewe belangrik is vir die welstand van die familie om as ’n eenheid te kan funksioneer. Skep ruimte vir elke individu om by te dra in sy area van kundigheid.

Hersien die snelperke Ons weet almal hoe belangrik toerisme vir ons ekonomie is.

Daar is verskillende soorte toeriste hier in die Kaap, byvoorbeeld fietsryers, wyndrinkers, natuurliefhebbers, stappers, kampeerders en so aan.

Iets wat ons heeltemal van vergeet het, is dat Duitse toeriste byvoorbeeld gewoond is aan snelweë met geen spoedbeperkings nie.

My voorstel aan die minister van toerisme is dat ons hier in die Kaap ’n aantal paaie oormerk met geen spoedbeperking gedurende bepaalde tye nie.

Ek glo dit gaan ’n groot trekpleister wees en daar kan natuurlik toegangsgeld gehef word; die staat doen mos niks gratis nie. Dit behoort teen enige bedrag die moeite en geld werd te wees. Andersins, as die lughawe eendag toemaak, kan die aanloopbaan gebruik word. Killarney is ongelukkig nie ’n topspoedbaan nie.

Terselfdertyd kan ons ook begin druk plaas op die owerhede om van hul “spoedmalligheid” af te sien. Daar is al hoe meer standaardmotors op ons paaie wat beperk word tot 250 km/h. Sommige haal lankal meer as 300 km/h en van die elektriese motors 400 km/h.

Ek is glad nie verras dat dit lyk of almal vinnig ry nie; karre is nou eenmaal gemaak om vinniger as voetgangers, fietse en donkies te ry. En krag en spoed is seker van die wonderlikste vryhede waarvan ons ontneem kan word. Ek wil dit net baie duidelik stel dat ek glad nie ’n voorstander van roekelose bestuur is nie. Trouens, met spoed kom enorme verantwoordelikheid, soos om ’n vuurwapen te besit. Mense moenie dink dat ’n mens enige tyd en enige plek net

vinnig kan ry nie. En natuurlik – die wind in die Kaap sal ook verseker dat jy baie stadig ry.

HENDRIK Durbanville

Neem ander mense in ag met musiek Ek wil beaam wat “Ou Suurbek” van Brackenfell sê oor bure wat voel dat almal na hulle en/of hul keuse van musiek moet luister (“Respekteer jou medemens”, 5/2).

Ons self kuier graag en dis heerlik om met vriende of familie ’n jolige tyd te geniet.

So, ons het geen beswaar as die bure kuiermense het nie, maar wel as hul musiek só hard is dat ons onsself toesluit in ons huis en die TV so hard moet stel om weg te kom van hul musiek. Nie almal geniet dieselfde musiek nie. Hoe kan ’n mens kuier as die musiek so oorverdowend is? Ek dink as mense die beginsel van “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” volg, sal almal in rus en vrede woon.

Ons het nie sulke suurknolle nodig Aangesien die Duitse vriende en die naamlose briefskrywer (“Toeriste wil nie weer SA besoek nie”, 29 Januarie) niks positief oor ons pragtige land en die Kaap kon vind om te geniet nie, dink ek hulle moet maar gerus nie weer hierheen kom nie. Ons het nie sulke suurknolle en mense wat net die lelik in die lewe raak sien, nodig nie. Komaan mense! Kyk om julle!

Miskien moet hulle liewer Doebai toe gaan volgende keer. Ongelukkig het hulle nie ’n berg of pylsterte nie.

Besoek jou eie kliniek Ek verwys na die brief van anoniem in TygerBurger (“Kliniek se diens gaan agteruit”, 5/2).

Ons weet almal die klinieke is onder baie druk. Ek het nog altyd goeie diens by die Bellville-kliniek ontvang.

Ek sien die klaers is van Durbanville en Brackenfell. U val nie onder Bellville nie.

Miskien moet al die mense van Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kraaifontein en Kuilsrivier die klinieke in hul eie gebiede besoek. Daar is te veel mense wat Bellville toe kom en dit maak dit nog moeiliker vir die kliniek om by te hou.

Beggar seen going to liquor store I would like to add my story about beggars to the letter “Stop beggars ‘killing themselves’ ” by C. Liebenberg that was published in TygerBurger on Wednesday 5 February.

I wrote a letter to TygerBurger and to the Afrikaans daily newspaper Die Burger about two weeks ago. This was about a lady standing at the intersection of Okavango Road and Belami Drive, near Makro.

In this case, it is not only swollen hands, but a red/pink heavily swollen face.

She uses her income to go to TOPS at SPAR at CapeGate Lifestyle Centre. I have seen her many times, and besides this she sleeps just there on the ground where the old Blasters Restaurant used to be. This between people getting in and out of taxis that stop there.

Needless to say, I got a mouthful from a person in Somerset West, telling me if I have not been in that positi-

I have to agree wholeheartedly with this reader.

I had the same problem.

The neighbours were celebrating some event or other. It is all well and good if anyone wants to celebrate a special occasion, but for goodness sake keep it within a time limit.

á die sukses van die eerste konsert in 2019, word die tweede Kuier op die graskonsert op Sondag 5 April weer op Zevenwacht-wynplaas aangebied.

Vanjaar beloof dit om groter en beter te wees met drie kuns­tenaars – Snotkop, Ricus Nel en Juan Boucher.

Christo Booyens van Bakgat Promosies, wat die konsert reël, sê hulle is meer as 20 jaar in die bedryf en streef daarna om die beste vermaak vir die hele gesin te bring.

Love filled GrandWest Five thousand fans spent their Valentine’s Day at It’s A Love Thing Vol. 4 Duets produced by Robin Pieters.

The show took place on Friday 14 February at the Grand Arena, GrandWest, with a lineup which included Pieters, Craig Lucas, Elwira Standili, Karin Kortjé, Keegan Martin, Loukmaan Adams, Nur Abrahams, Paxton Fielies, PJ Twins, Salome and Terra Cox. Youngsta CPT was a surprise act at the show.

“When she was younger she turned towards the Ariana Grandes of the world, but nowadays her love for music is so diverse that it would be impossible to mention just one. Her go-to song for this week would have to be “Don’t want you” by Ella Mai,” her mother says.

young musician from Monte Vista has just released her debut single, “Untouchable”.

The track saw her being interviewed on several local radio stations recently and will hopefully open more doors for the aspiring artist.

Tayla Hunter, a Grade 10 learner at Edgemead High School, says music, dancing and figure skating are just a few of the hobbies she loves.

Asked what inspired her to pursue a music career she indicated that her family played a huge role.

Her mother, Candace Rogers and godfather, the late Ian Ward (founder of One FM 94.0) always pushed her a little.

But it was her father who really made an impact on her decision to

take singing more seriously and who encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

The 15-year-old singer/songwriter started singing lessons about one and a half years ago.

Although her father has some musical abilities, it is still a mystery where her beautiful voice came from, as no one in the family can really sing, her mother says.

However, her great-grandfather used to sing and play the banjo during the war to lift people’s spirits.

Tayla is currently on a bursary with Discovery Health (where her mother is employed) and hopes to maintain her A-aggregate to retain the bursary throughout high school and university.

“She wants to study something in the medical field and at the moment she is contemplating midwifery,”

he 2020 Western Province Rotax Max karting championship kicked off in dramatic style on Saturday 15 February as bumper fields of eager young racers delivered thrilling racing and multiple winners on a scorching hot Cape summer’s day at the Killarney Kart Track.

In a dramatic top class DD2 gearbox class season opener, Sebastian Boyd beat old rivals Jason Coetzee, senior max graduate Charl Visser and Dino Stermin to victory in a day that saw all three taking a chance at winning.

Coetzee romped to lights to flag heat 1 win, before Boyd returned the favour in the second race and then Visser took a somewhat fortuitous maiden DD2 win in the sensational final.

It was an equally thrilling weekend in o.30 DD2 Masters, where Conor Hughes, Roy Gruer and Jason Greyling shared out the race wins to end up in that order overall ahead of Andre Steenkamp, Jared Jordan and Andrew Thomas, who bounced back to end the final, second after a tough two opening heats.

Jason Coetzee had a great day to take senior max with a couple of race wins on his return to that WP class, moving from fifth to first in race 1 as he passed second place man of the day Tate Bishop, on the last lap to take the heat 1 win before moving ahead on lap three, making it to an easy race 2 win over Bishop again.

The Rotax Max Challenge sees drivers racing like-powered karts in a tightly controlled series of races to crown regional champions in the major centres around the country, alongside a four-rounds SA National championship to crown this year’s South African champions. They earn Grand Final seats in the SA team in the Olympics of Karting, the Rotax Max Grand Finals in Bahrain in November.

The next round of the WP series is at Killarney on Saturday 14 March.
