A

nxiety, fear and frustration are just a few of the emotions felt as the coronavirus spreads in South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a na-

tional state of disaster on Sunday 15 March, implementing emergency measures to curb the spread of the virus.

One of these includes banning gatherings of 100 people or more, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of events across the country.

TygerBurger spoke to various people across different sectors who are affected by the virus.

Emergency measures Measures Ramaphosa announced include the following:

. A travel ban for foreign nationals from high-risk countries, including Britain, Italy, Iran, Spain, Germany, China and the United States. South African citizens are also advised to refrain from travelling to high-risk countries.

Veterane trek nie meer voor, karnaval nou af DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

L

ede van die WP-veteraantrekker- en enjinklub is teleurgesteld oor die afstel van dié jaar se Kaapstad-karnaval wat die komende Saterdagaand sou plaasvind.

Ses lede van dié klub sou met hul trekkers en sleepwaens met klanktoerusting voor getrek het vir die groepe wat sou optree.

Die karnavalorganiseerders het Maandagoggend aangekondig die karnaval is afgestel nadat pres. Cyril Ramaphosa Sondagaand ’n nasionale ramptoestand in die land afgekondig het om die verspreiding van Covid-19 te bekamp.

Dit sou die klub se vyfde jaar van deelname aan dié gewilde optog gewees het.

“Die situasie is Saterdag op ’n vergadering van die komitee bespreek. Dit was opvallend hoe baie deelnemers steeds optimisties was om deel te neem, so ook ons klub.

Die grootste besorgdheid was die toeskouers se welstand. Daar is elke jaar sowat 55 000 toeskouers wat bankvas staan.

“Dis baie jammer dit is vanjaar afgestel, maar ons troos onsself daaraan dat dit nooit gekanselleer sal word nie vanweë die positiewe beeld wat deelnemers van verskillende kulture uitdra en die geweldige impak wat dit het om die beeld van Kaapstad te bevorder,” sê Hannes Rheeder, voorsitter van die klub.

Die klub het vyf jaar gelede betrokke geraak.

“Dit het net sin gemaak om die sleepwaens in die optog met trekkers te trek pleks van vragmotors. Trekkers is gemaak om stadig te ry en is laag op die grond. Vragmotors se kajuite is te hoog en dan kan jy eers die sierwa agterop sien wanneer hy by jou verby ry,” verduidelik Rheeder.

Hannes Rheeder, voorsitter van die WP-veteraantrekker- en enjinklub, staan by ’n 1945-Farmall B-trekker in die klubhuis in Joostenbergvlakte.

T

he newly completed section of Giel Basson Drive (M12) near Burgundy Estate and Richwood is finally open. The section links Malibongwe Drive and Welbeloond Road in Atlantic Hills – a newly developed light industrial area – to Tygerberg Valley Road.

Last year TygerBurger reported on the road’s completion, but also that the road had not yet been opened. This was due to outstanding electrical work (“Road complete, just electricity still required”, 6/11).

Work on the road started in June 2018.

Police proud of convictions Several cases investigated by the Bothasig police have ended in successful convictions, the police say.

WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson, says the station was especially happy with two cases in which hefty jail sentences were handed down.

One of the convictions involves a 37-year-old man who was found to be in possession of Mandrax tablets at a house in Bothasig in February. The man, who is originally from Ravensmead, received a fine of R2 000 or 90 days behind bars, Mostert says.

A 44-year-old man from Bothasig was also convicted in February after he was arrested for driving under the influence.

He received a fine of R10 200 or a two-year jail sentence, says Mostert.

Capt Carleigh Noemdo, head of the Bothasig detectives, is proud of the police members and the way the cases were dealt with.

Rise in assault cases Bothasig police say they have noticed a “steady” rise in cases of assault.

WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson, say some of the complaints include victims being pushed, hit with fists, slapped or kicked.

“In some of these cases alcohol as well as domestic violence had played a part. It was also noticed that counter cases, where both parties open cases, had been reported,” Mostert says.

Music competition entries closing soon E

very year during September, young musicians from all over the country take part in the Samro Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition.

Says Anna-Marie Alkema, one of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) committee members: “Children participating in this event undergo tremendous musical growth from the moment they start preparing for the audition up until the week of the competition itself.

“Although being a musician should not focus on competing as its main goal, exposure to this platform does create an opportu-

nity to prepare for a potential performing career as well as holistic academic and social development.”

Previous winners represent different parts of the country and include Teboho Motsatse (Johannesburg), Weien Amy Luo (Durban) and Mike Wang (Cape Town).

T

he entertainment industry and the livelihoods of artists are being negatively affected by the state of disaster announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday 15 March.

This according to events management company, Brukman Consulting, after several events which were set to take place across in the coming weeks have either been cancelled or postponed in an effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19.

In his address to the nation on Sunday evening following an urgent Cabinet meeting Ramaphosa announced the following preventative measures where events and gatherings are concerned: . Gatherings of more than 100 people will be prohibited; . mass celebrations of upcoming national days such as Human Rights Day and other large government events will be cancelled;

. where small gatherings are unavoidable, organisers will need to put in place stringent measures of prevention and control.

This in effect means the hosting of major music festivals and shows at GrandWest and the rest of Cape Town need to be put on hold.

Founder of Brukman Consulting, Bridgette Brukman, says most of their events take place in public places with more than 100 people.

“A further impact of this pandemic is that events in communities are unable to take place, organisations that rely on big shows for income will have to stop production. It’s a domino effect in this industry. Some fulltime artists feel the pinch more as they rely on events for their basic living expenses.”

Brukman says they have had to cancel or postpone partnered events such as the KKNK, Suidooster actress Jill Levenberg’s Up Close & Personal Brunch and Nostalgia (an event which would’ve featured Craig Lucas and Robin Pieters) to name a few.

Donate blood despite Covid-19 The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is appealing to healthy donors to continue donating blood.

Michelle Vermeulen, promotions manager for the WCBS says they would like to assure donors that donating blood is safe.

The coronavirus (Covid-19) cannot be transmitted through a blood transfusion as respiratory viruses are generally not known to be transmitted by donation or transfusion.

Blood donor screening, which includes travel self-deferrals, are already in place to prevent individuals who may be at risk

of clinical respiratory infections from donating blood. The WCBS does not test for Covid-19.

The WCBS is currently experiencing a critical shortage of O- and B+ blood groups.

Healthy donors of all blood groups are urged to continue to donate blood to ensure the blood stock levels are adequate at all times in the Western Cape. “We anticipate added pressure on the blood supply during Easter, Ramadaan and the winter months and the added effects of the coronavirus could see the number of eligible do-

Big Concerts has also announced the postponement of the Lighthouse Family’s SA tour that was due to take place at the Grand Arena, GrandWest on Tuesday 24 March. In a statement it said: “We are working to reschedule the tour and all tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled dates. Further information will be sent directly to ticket holders as soon as it becomes available.”

Province equiped for Covid-19 Provincial minister of health, Nomafrench Mbombo, visited Tygerberg Hospital last week to outline the province’s plan of action amid the Covid19 virus outbreak.

Mbombo was accompanied by medical experts, as well as the premier, Alan Winde. During the visit a walkthrough was conducted of the two isolation wards at the state facility.

Nationally there were 62 confirmed cases of Covid-19 by Tuesday. The Western Cape had 16 confirmed cases of Covid-19, commonly referred to as the coronavirus. The department said in a statement the last six patients are all men with varying ages.

“These six new cases all presented to private facilities with flu-like symptoms, and recent international travel history to various countries,” Mark van den Heever, spokesperson for the department, says. All 16 cases are being monitored.

Residents that suspect they may have the virus are advised to immediately seek medical help. Explain your symptoms and where you have travelled to, or with whom you had contact.

It is important that you call ahead before visiting a health facility, the department say.

Symptoms include a cough, fever and sore throat.

It is advisable for you to stay at home and self-isolate if you display these symptoms, the department advises.

Celebration of art in Bellville Art.b Gallery, the Arts Association of Bellville, is currently exhibiting works by their members.

Participating artists are displaying only one of their works, with no size restrictions.

Says Anne Wells of Art.b Gallery: “This exhibition showcases and celebrates our members’ art. Our members include established artists, students, amateur artists as well as untrained artists. Every year, we’re amazed and delighted with the quality of the works that form part of this exhibition.”

City to address refuse removal backlog The City of Cape Town’s refuse collection services should see a steady improvement over the next three weeks.

The disruptions to refuse removal times and subsequent backlogs have been experienced as a result of revised procedures to audit and governance processes that came into effect from 24 January.

According to a statement by the City, this is affecting repairs to vehicles and infrastructure throughout the municipality.

However, this is primarily being felt in the solid waste collections service due to the high demands placed on vehicles ánd the maintenance required to keep the service working.

Various City departments have worked day and night to finalise 709 purchase or-

ders for the servicing of its 211 refuse vehicles in line with the new audit requirements and to continue the refuse service as best as possible, including timeously clearing backlogs.

Suppliers are also being requested to speed up repairs and maintenance of vehicles to get them back on the road again.

Where applicable, senior staff in the solid waste service has also been recalled from leave to ensure contingencies, such as redistribution of vehicles to worse-affected areas, are in place to minimise the impact on residents while the backlog of vehicle repairs is being tackled.

Residents are advised that from Monday 16 March a new service schedule will be implemented which will mean that refuse col-

lection should not be delayed by more than one day. Residents throughout the City are advised to bring their bins out by 07:00 in the morning and leave them outside until 21:00. The City’s solid waste teams will continue to also work on weekends to clear any backlog which still exists.

“Excess refuse that cannot fit in the wheelie bins will also be collected until this problem is resolved. Residents are also implored not to resort to illegal dumping if collection delays cause refuse to build-up to the point where it cannot fit in the wheelie bins.

“The City apologises for this inconvenience. We want to thank our residents for their patience during this time while every effort is being made to restore normal ser-

vices,’ said the City’s mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg.

Furthermore, the City is engaging with contractors to attempt to mobilise any additional capacity they may have available, and are increasing oversight in the service to ensure contingencies operate as designed.

According to the City’s Mayco member for finance, Ian Neilson, they have worked hard to ensure that the revised procedures do not have an indefinite negative impact on service delivery.

“City financial experts have developed ways to speed up the procurement process in a manner that is compliant with the new audit and governance requirements while at the same time, together with our solid waste department, everyone has done their utmost to ensure that the impact on services is minimised wherever humanly possible,” said Neilson.

The Bothasig Gardens phase 2 construction project is currently under way.

hase 2 of a social housing project at Bothasig Gardens is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2021, “if all goes as planned”.

The first phase of the project has been completed and provided 120 qualifying beneficiaries and their families social housing opportunities, the City of Cape Town says.

This phase of the project entails providing social housing to 314 beneficiaries.

On Wednesday last week, Mayco member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, visited the site to check on the progress. He was accompanied by ward councillor Helen Carstens.

“It is exciting to see the second phase of the Bothasig Gardens social housing project progressing well and that the work is on track for completion within the next year. We are closer to seeing this project be-

come a reality and for our qualifying beneficiaries to move into their new homes. It is also a good example of how we must build and expand on partnerships to tackle the demand for more affordable housing in Cape Town and other parts of the country for that matter,” Booi says.

The social housing regulatory authority’s social housing grant for this project is more than R85 million and social housing institution Communicare contributed equity of more than R46 million while the City contributed land and bulk services at a cost of about R20 million.

“We are aware of the acute housing need in our city and the impact that housing can have on our residents,” says Booi.

Construction on the second phase of the Bothasig Gardens project started in November 2019.

Trees cut for safety, says City The removal of pine trees in Monte Vista earlier this month was done out of safety concerns, the City of Cape Town says.

Ten trees were removed from the road reserves along Monte Vista Boulevard as a safety precaution for motorists and pedestrians, says Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community service and health. The trees, he says, were all dead.

Last week TygerBurger reported on the pine trees being removed in the Monte Vista area (“Dead pine trees cut down”, 11/03).

“Removal was necessary to prevent them from falling over and causing damage due to inclement weather anticipated in the winter months ahead,” Badroodien ex-

plains.

He says tree removal happens on a caseby-case basis.

“There are some instances where there is damage to property or continuous problems with walls and foundations because of the tree roots. Root pruning will then always be considered as a first option and where it is viable – as it would make a tree unstable – the tree is removed.”

The trees in Monte Vista were all pine trees, but in some cases Ficus trees are also removed elsewhere in the city.

“Should residents wish for trees to be planted, they can contact the local office who will advise of feasibility of the request,” Badroodien says. -Richard Roberts

T

he 2020 Easter egg collection campaign for the Lighthouse Foundation has officially kicked off.

Inspired by the strength of her mother, Anel Hugo from Bellville dreamed up the Lighthouse vision in 2013 and finally in 2018 formalised the foundation into a registered nonprofit organisation.

Her mom Rounell passed away in 2016, aft-

er battling leukaemia for 17 years.

The Easter egg project came to be in 2009 when Anel collected 24 284 Easter eggs for patients at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

“We collected the marshmallow Easter eggs and packaged three eggs into sandwich bags with a little note and a ribbon around the packet to round it all off. I was bowled over with the hearts of people. We collected 12 times more than we set out to do,” she says in a statement.

“A group of ‘world changers’ did random acts of kindness through selflessly giving their time, donations and sometimes even financial contributions.”

The project became an annual affair.

In 2010, they collected 18 000 Easter eggs, in 2012, 30 000 and in 2015, 32 733. In total they have spoiled more than 50 000 people in hospitals, children’s homes, soup kitchens and night shelters with a little chocolate delight.

“My mom was a pillar in this project, despite her leukaemia and chemo treatments.

She was an absolute warrior, always thinking more of others than herself. She made endless packets, dropped it off at various locations and was always willing when the new year arrived to support the project, the project will always be dedicated to her memory. We take so many things for granted, a bed to sleep on, a meal, your health, family and friends whereas most people in our beautiful country are just trying to survive,” says Anel.

New carnivorous plant species discovered A new carnivorous plant species was discovered in the Klipheuwel area outside Durbanville recently.

The plants from the Drosera species, which are also known as Sundews or “Snotrosies”, catch and digest small insects, using stalked glands on their leaf surfaces.

The smaller pink-flowered form of Drosera cistiflora found in this area specifically, is very unique and different enough from the type of specimen(s) to be included into a research project that might see it classified as a new species in the near future, according to a media release by the City of Cape Town.

“Though the research is still in its early stages, this sub-population will likely also be considered as highly threatened because of its rarity,” according to the media release.

The plants were found in the Joostenbergskloof conservation area after an ecological burn was conducted in the 40-year-old veld in 2018.

Wendy Horn to lead education district The provincial education department has appointed Wendy Horn, award winning teacher and principal of Protea Heights Academy (PHA) in Brackenfell, as director of the Metro North education district. Horn will replace David Millar who will take up his duties as CEO of the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa.

The PHA principal was recently named the winner of the National Teaching Award for Excellence in Secondary School Leadership.

In 2017, Horn was one of 50 finalists for

the Global Teacher of the Year Award.

She also received a National Teaching Award for excellence in teaching science in March 2014.

Announcing her new appointment, effective from 01 April 2020, Horn tweeted: “I am ready to serve”.

Millar said he believes that the district will flourish under Horn’s guidance.

Banger vir stasie as vir selfisolasie Die tyd wat ons almal gevrees het, is nou uiteindelik hier.

Die laaste klompie weke lees ons en sien ons op die televisie hoe die gevreesde Covid 19-virus die markte laat tuimel het, grense toegemaak en mense vir weke op ’n boot vasgekeer is. Sportwedstryde en ander geleenthede waar baie mense bymekaar moet kom, is gekanselleer.

In my leeftyd het ek al baie flieks gesien van hoe virusse versprei en watter impak dit op die wêreld (gewoonlik net Amerika) het. Nooit het ek gedink dat ek die dag sal sien wanneer ons president voor die hele land sal staan en sê “my fellow South Africans” en dan die land tot ’n rampgebied verklaar nie. En grense en skole en wat nog moet toemaak om die inwoners van die land te beskerm nie.

Ek is seker daar is mense, veral leerders en studente, wat die langer vakansie gaan geniet. Ook van die werknemers wat nou van die huis af kan werk, dink seker dit is hemel op aarde.

Maar ons moet ’n oomblik stilstaan en dink aan diegene wie lewe daarvan afhang om baie mense bymekaar te hê.

Sportspanne en kunstenaars, maar veral die kunstenaars.

Baie kunstenaars is afhanklik van die inkomste wat hulle jaarliks tydens feeste genereer en die meeste groot feeste is afgestel.

Die Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees op Oudtshoorn dra jaarliks meer as R100 miljoen by tot die plaaslike ekonomie. Die afstelling beteken dat hierdie streek, wat reeds onder ’n droogte gebuk gaan, nog verder verarm. ’n Mens sidder om te dink hoe die armstes onder die armes hierdeur geraak word.

Dis ’n baie goeie ding dat skole vir langer gesluit word, maar hier moet ons dink aan die skole-voedingskema. Amper tien miljoen leerders ontvang kos by staatskole. Vir baie is die ete wat hulle by die skool kry die enigste vir die dag.

Gaan hierdie kinders vir ’n bykomende week sonder kos wees?

Wetenskaplikes beveel aan dat mense wat uit die buiteland kom of diegene wat vermoed dat hulle met ’n besmette persoon in aanraking gekom het, hulself isoleer. Daar is baie mense wat hul eie geselskap geniet. Sommige kreatiewes hou daarvan om afgesonder te wees, want dan kan kry hul kreatiwiteit vlerke.

Maar hoe nou gemaak met mense, soos die uwe, wat sy energie van ander mense kry?

Ek was klein toe ek reeds besef het ek kan nie te lank sonder ander mense wees nie. Dalk is dit omdat ek in ’n huis vol kinders groot geword het. Daar was altyd iets aan die gebeur in my ouerhuis en om ’n stil hoekie te kry vir enigiets, was ’n luukse.

Sedert die uitbreek van koronavirus het ek gedink, wat sal ek doen as ek gedwing word om in afsondering te lewe?

Boeke lees en flieks kyk en dalk bietjie skryf. Miskien skilder en baie tyd met my geliefdes deurbring. Tussendeur dalk na musiek luister waarvoor ek lanklaas tyd gehad het.

Ná ek lank oor al hierdie dinge gedink het, kom ’n moedswillige kollega en praat oor hoe dit op die Bellville-stasie gaan.

Volgens haar is daar siektes te kus en te keur op daai stasie. Die laaste keer wat ek daar was, het riool sommer vrylik gevloei en mense het sommer openlik water afgeslaan. ’n Onaardse stank het in die lug gehang en alles het net vuil gelyk.

Dit is só maklik om te kla oor die rook van tuinvullis, maar ek is seker dieselfde persoon maak gereeld braaivure en almal word blootgestel aan die rook en reuk van vleis, al is jy vegetaries – jy moet maar daarmee saamleef. Soos die vrot vullisreuk jou pla, so pla die reuk van braaivure ander om jou.

En as jy net ’n vuur maak, affekteer daardie rookreuk ook ander se wasgoed op die lyn.

Why not rather take on taxis?

It seems like traffic officers in Goodwood are too scared to take on taxis who commit traffic offenses daily and is targeting the man on the street. I attended a school fun walk at De Vrije Zee Primary School and to my shock, I got a traffic fine for parking. Since there was no parking at the school, all parents parked in the road without obstructing traffic.

Why not take on taxi drivers who drive like idiots and are a danger to society?

March, “Stop signs mean stop” (TygerBurger): Oh dear when it comes to drivers on the road this is only the very tip of the iceberg!

I wonder just what is being taught to learner drivers these days whether by instructors from driving schools or merely friends because the code of the road seems to have taken the back street. Why stop at a stop sign – this is time wasting – better to use it as a yield sign and if there happens to be a yield sign well ignore that all together. When nearing traffic lights - if amber it means beat the red! However, should you fail all you have to do is edge forward over the two pedestrian crossing lines so that you are geared and ready to move before the lights even change to green.

Once in the main stream do not heed the speed limit – that is for sissies – in any case who will be around to step out into the road to stop you. Go ahead and drive as you please! Should the driver in front of you display caution and happens to be driving slower – well he is just hogging the road. All you have to do is drive right up to the rear end of his vehicle so that he will be forced to make way for you.

If not. you could flash your lights, hoot or drive over the solid line or even the yellow demarcated area (which in fact indicates an invisible island of sorts). Do not at any time slow down, be courteous, be tolerant or be considerate – No! You have a licence (however it was obtained), you are the only one with the right of way, your motto must be: “King of the highway!”

Oh why do I bother to write

– it might well be just to air my anger and frustration. For no doubt the very many who not only ignore stop signs but every rule of the road will not take note. The next time behind the wheel sadly it could be into the role of late actor Paul Walker (Fast & Furious) – speed kills!

Ek het jare gelede bolletjies daarvan raakgeloop en geplant. As ek reg onthou het dit bolletjies.

Myne blom gereeld elke jaar van omstreeks Maart tot Mei. Volgens inligting wat ek het, word dit ook vlieslelies genoem. Spinnekoplelie is vir my meer beskrywend van hoe die blom lyk.

Thank you for your honesty We would like to publically acknowledge the excellent service received from Simon Miners who was on duty at FreshStop Durbanville in Wellington Road, late on a Saturday night where we stopped for diesel and a few odds and ends. We accidentally left our bank card in the machine and considered phoning the bank to cancelling our card but decided instead to pop into the FreshStop and enquire as to whether they had seen our bank card.

An abundance of blooms this year How surprised we were when we saw Rocco Bonafede’s picture in the TygerBurger (11 March) with his Spider Lilies.

We have had Spider Lilies for many years, but this year we have had an abundance of blooms. The lily seems to bloom between 19:30 and 20:00, but then only lasts a few days.

We have our Spider Lilies in a pot on the front veranda of our cottage. Last month we advertised the fact that the first blooms were about to open. For the last three weeks we have not disappointed the village residents who have come to view this magnificent flower.

We have also managed to capture a short video on the cellphone of the actual opening which takes a few seconds.

porting activity in the country has been brought to a grinding halt following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Sunday 15 May that the country is now in a state of disaster in response to the Covid-19.

In his address, Ramaphosa drove home the point that minimising contact between people is essential in curbing the spread of the virus, further stipulating that gatherings of 100 people or more will not be allowed. As a result, almost every major sporting body in the country has followed suit, by implementing immediate suspensions or cancellations of activity amid the ongoing uncertainty which surrounds the outbreak.

The Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC), which oversees multiple sporting codes and reports to the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC)

have been one of the first to take heed. “We request that all members in the sporting fraternity begin the immediate practice of social distancing,” reads the statement by WCPSC president JP Naudé.

The statement further outlines that all sport in the province is postponed or cancelled with immediate effect for at least the next two weeks. This includes clubs, district, provincial and national activity and includes junior and senior sports activities; amateur and professional sports gatherings; formal and informal sport gatherings; private and institutional sports gatherings; and competitions.

“Although the first action is a suspension of 14 days, this could change or be extended on further notice. We will continue to engage with our partners and the health authorities so that we may advise you with accurate and timeous information ... If ever there was a time for the sport to contribute to the nation, this is it.”

No more TygerRun this weekend The TygerRun, that was scheduled to take place on Saturday 21 March, has been postponed until further notice. A new date is still to be set, and will be communicated to runners, for the event that is presented by TygerBurger, Radio Tygerberg 104FM and Tyger Valley Shopping Centre.

Hardus Zevenster, chief executive officer of Radio Tygerberg, says: “We see the virus disruptions as an opportunity for South Africa to take the lead, take responsibility and set an example to not panic under real pressure and fake news. It is a chance to stand together, to help each other, and to encourage one another to succeed in difficult times. The only way to overcome the virus is not to take it lightly, but at the same time to make wellconsidered and responsible decisions for the benefit of everyone.”

Cricket season cancelled The Western Province Cricket Association has also announced

the cancellation of the rest of the cricket season. “To this end, the WPCA offices and Newlands Cricket Ground, is under lockdown until further notice,” read a statement issued by WPCA. As a result, most WPCA staff will work remotely, all club, youth and any other form of cricket is cancelled and all board and subcommittee meetings are cancelled.

Residents are also encouraged not to visit Newlands Cricket Ground in an effort to “to exercise social distancing and prevent the spread of the virus”.

Varsity Cup games postponed While a decision on the future of the Varsity Cup was not yet available at the time of print, the organisation chose to postpone all this week’s matches. “All FNB Varsity Cup matches for 16 March have been postponed. The FNB Varsity Cup Board will meet on Tuesday 17 March where a decision on the rest of the tournament will be taken,” read the statement.

Bodybuilding champs now in July The International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) Africa International Championship was due to take place in Bellville South this week. INBA Africa president, Alma Nel, confirmed the event’s postponement. “Following the announcement by the President last night (Sunday), we have decided to postpone our event to Saturday 11 July,” says Nel. Kewyn Snyman laid down his marker for the 2020 RST Suzuki South Superbike series title with a superb clean sweep of pole position, the fastest lap in each race and two race wins.

Which is not to say that he had it all his own way. Multiple former regional cham-

pion Ronald Slamet chased him for most of the race, until Snyman pulled the pin in the closing stages and pulled away to win by 9.413 seconds.

Behind them an epic four-way fight for third resolved itself into two separate duels as Gerrit Visser recovered from a poor start to make up two places and beat Bernard Haupt’s Fueled Racing R1 by 0.208sec for third.

The closest racing of the day, however, came from the teenagers of the Powersport 300 Class. Slade van Niekerk and David Lindemann finished fourth and fifth overall, separated by a scant 0.008sec, in Race 1 after swopping places four times in eight laps.

Lindemann got his revenge in Race 2 however, passing his arch-rival three laps from the end and holding onto a tenuous lead to come home 0.541sec ahead.
