Raising awareness while fighting crime!

Bothasig police recently conducted a vehicle checkpoint with the help of the City of Cape Town’s traffic services and Metro Police. This was done as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The operation was conducted in Vryburger Avenue, Bothasig. “The goal was two-fold – to do crime prevention and enforcement, and also to raise awareness regarding the abuse of women and children,” says WO Jacques Mostert, police spokesperson. On the day, 95 vehicles were pulled over and 17 were searched. The police also issued 13 fines to the value of R35 000.

othasig residents are up in arms after Eskom started digging trenches in the area.

The trenches, according to comments on the Bothasig Residents’ Association (BRA) Facebook page, are left open for days and pose a danger to pedestrians.

Trenches have been dug in Botma and Ross streets, but apparently the digging will affect the entire Bothasig.

One resident wrote that the situation is unacceptable, saying that on windy days things only get worse and that people have nowhere to park when visiting. Another mentioned that the grass he recently planted had been “destroyed” by the sand.

The open excavations were apparently the work of a subcontractor.

Helen Carstens, councillor for ward 5, has confirmed there has been meetings between all the role players, including Eskom, BRA and her office. Carstens indicated she is unsure as to what the trenches are for as it is

an external project run by the power utility.

The excavations are set to continue until February 2020.

“The complaints were first brought to my attention when it appeared on social media.

“Eskom’s contractor did meet with me prior to the commencement of the project, and because of my previous experience with Eskom, I enquired if a community liaison officer (CLO) would be appointed and if residents would be informed. The contractor said that this would happen but, unfortunately, it did not happen,” Carstens says.

The last meeting was held on Wednesday 11 December between the stakeholders, including the Bothasig neighbourhood watch and local community policing forum.

“I met with Eskom who admitted that they had erred on the point of checking with the contractor to ascertain if the CLO had been appointed and the residents had been notified.”

The matter was also brought to the attention of the department of roads and transport, Carstens says.

Spreading Christmas cheer at hospitals R

achel’s Wishes hosted and partially funded two Christmas parties, one at Red Cross and a second at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital on Friday 6 December.

Christine and Debbie Adcock from Rachel’s Wishes, in collaboration with the team from Reach for a Dream, hosted a festive party at the transplant unit of Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

“The children enjoyed a morning of entertainment with the Reach for a Dream ‘Jabulani’ entertainer. This was followed by a delicious lunch for the children and their parents funded by Rachel’s Wishes, along with the very generous donation from Food Lover’s Market, Pinehurst.

“A very big thank you to Roger Boltman, manager of the branch, along with his team, for supporting us with this event. Without their participation we could not have fed the 65 children and their parents. The highlight

of the day was when each child received a special gift from Father Christmas,” says Christine.

She adds the second party at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital is already an annual feature on the hospital’s calendar. This event catered for 400 children (300 inpatients and 100 outpatients) with the aim of giving the children a Christmas party they will never forget.

“Each year, the organising committee of this event relies on the generosity of various sponsors. Margaret Sendler, Jilly Bird and Ami-Rose Barber from Rachel’s Wishes, along with various other sponsors, ensured it was a huge success. Additional sponsors ensured that each child received a party packet, cake and sweets, contributing to the success of the day.”

On Friday, Eskom responded, saying it was upgrading its underground network in the area by laying cables in Botma and Ross streets.

“Unfortunately, the trenches were left open for a few days in early December but have subsequently been closed.

“Work related to trenching and cable laying has stopped for the calendar year but not the reinstatement of the pavements and drive-ways. It is expected that the contractor allocated to the project will complete the reinstatement of the two streets by Thursday 19 December.

“Eskom apologises for the inconvenience caused to its customers,” the power utility says.

Identikidz return to beaches The City of Cape Town will implement its Identikidz project at 15 beaches over the festive season.

The project aims to help reunite lost children with their families.

As part of the project all children who arrive at these beaches will be registered and issued with a tag containing their parents’ contact details. The initiative will be active at these beaches on 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29 and 31 December and again on 1, 2, 4, 5, 11 and 12 January.

The City’s social development and early childhood development directorate is spearheading the project, which is part of the festive season safety plan.

This year, the project has been implemented at Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Strandfontein, Gordon’s Bay, Strand, Monwabisi, Harmony Park, Mnandi, Big Bay, Sea Point and surrounding area, Silwerstroom, Camps Bay, Lagoon Beach, Melkbosstrand and Milnerton beaches from this past weekend. “The Identikidz programme has grown exponentially as more people become aware of it, and the

results are truly astounding.

“It provides peace of mind to parents on busy beach days, when children can so easily become lost in the crowd, but it also makes the task to reunite them far simpler,” says Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien.

During the 2018/’19 festive season, just more than 100 000 children were tagged – a 132% increase on the previous year.

A total of 535 children were reunited with their families.

“We are doing everything possible to keep children safe, but this doesn’t absolve parents and caregivers of their responsibility,” says Badroodien.

“We urge them to register their children with our Identikidz teams as soon as they arrive at the beach, and to ensure that they keep their cellphone close by and charged, in the event that we need to get hold of them.

“Getting lost is a very traumatic experience for a child and we want to limit the anxiety by reuniting them with their caregivers as soon as possible.”

Businesses in Bothasig suffer due to loadshedding RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

W

hen the lights go out, so do profits and productivity.

This is the opinion of local business managers and owners in the Bothasig area who have suffered significant losses as a result of loadshedding which was implemented more than a week ago.

In a statement issued on Friday 13 December, Eskom indicated that loadshedding would be required all day “to cater for further trips, and to create capacity to replenish water reserves for our pumped storage schemes”.

On Friday, ahead of the long weekend, Eskom implemented Stage 2 rotational loadshedding between 09:00 and 23:00.

Earlier in the week saw the power utility implement Stage 6 loadshedding.

This, businesses say, has had an adverse effect on their day-to-day running.

Janice Scrimgeour, manager at the Cedar Spar in Botma Street, says their store suffered a lot.

“It has had a negative impact on our business.

“You can have all the measures in place, but in a nutshell, we do not have access to our computers.

“We need to put in our orders at our suppliers upfront as some companies close the coming weeks, but due to the loadshedding this has now caused a backlog.

“I cannot even recharge my cell phone. It is painful,” Scrimgeour says.

She says she feels as if her hands are tied.

“Loadshedding affects us in a negative way. Our tills cut out and the customers do

not want to wait. There is absolutely nothing we can do.

“The customer has a choice to make, do they wait, or do they leave their stuff and come back later?

“We try our best to implement things when the lights go out.”

She says the store does make use of a backup-generator, but when the power goes out, it takes a while for the generator to reboot their computer system.

“Our Uninterrupted Power Supply which runs to our tills cuts out, and it takes three to five minutes to restart. Some customers do not want to wait.

“You as a manager, you panic and you are on the edge,” she says.

Scrimgeour says some people do their shopping according to the loadshedding schedule.

“We serve a whole lot of seniors in the area and they are not always as computer savvy as the youngsters to check on the app for the schedule and to make sure if there is electricity or not,” Scrimgeour says.

A pet shop-owner at a shopping complex in Vryburger Avenue says her business too has suffered a lot.

“Our fish tanks are taking a strain and we had to use battery operated pumps to keep the tanks going during loadshedding. Normally we use electricity,” she says.

The owner says the electricity would go off for nearly seven hours during a day.

“I cannot afford to close my business, as I have staff to pay.

“This really is taking a toll on my business,” she says.

Willem Loots, senior manager at Engen De Grendel in De Grendel Avenue, Botha-

sig, says business here have also taken a punch.

“I have been looking for generators, but cannot find any. We try our best to get a generator, but we are told that they are all sold out,” Loots says.

He says the loadshedding has caused a lot of problems at both the pumps and the store.

“The computers are our main problem as they are not working.

“Our EFT (point of sales) systems are not loading and the sales of litres of fuel has dropped. The cash made in the store has also dropped,” Loots says.

He says the shop alone would make close to R15 000 a day, but that his profits had decreased to R8 000.

“But the fuel outside is our biggest loss,” says Loots.

He says he has been suffering a loss since loadshedding started.

“At first the electricity went off twice a day and then three times a day. On the days it went out three times we suffered the most.”

The power would go off at 06:00, 14:00 and again at 22:00.

“The morning was probably the worst as people who went to work would stop, but cannot put in any fuel.

“We lost the most at this time of the day.

I would stand outside and I could see how the cars turn around.”

He says the loss in customers is one aspect, another is the unproductivity of his staff, he says.

‘Be cautious at the beach’ The City of Cape Town is calling on bathers to exercise caution and heed warnings following several drowning incidents.

In a statement, the Mayco member for community services, Zahid Badroodien has advised that bathers stay within safe zones at the beach.

“The peak summer season and popular beach days are still on the way and already 10 people have lost their lives. This is very disheartening, given the awareness drives and campaigns from the City to prevent drowning.

During the previous season (2018/2019), there were 11 fatal drownings compared to the season before where 19 people lost their lives.

“Indications are that incidents are related to rip currents or swimming in undesignated bathing areas. Our key messaging each season specifically includes warnings on rip currents and staying within safe zones on the beach,” said Badroodien.

The City has 282 seasonal beach lifeguards, in addition to 11 permanent senior beach lifeguards, who are stationed at 26 locations along the coast, including tidal pools.

“While they assist with many help outs, near-drownings and prevent a large number of serious incidents, they cannot do it alone.

Visitors to the beach have a role to play and I implore them to remain in the designated bathing areas at all times, swim only at beaches where lifeguards are on duty, to not drink and swim, to only swim between the flags and for adults to supervise their children.

“You are reminded not to bring alcohol to the beach because not only is it illegal, but alcohol impairs good judgment.

Help us to keep you safe while you have fun,” added Badroodien.

ong kankerlyers in die onkologie-saal by die Tygerberg-hospitaal is verlede week met ’n vroeë Kersgeskenk verras, danksy twee tieners se goedhartigheid.

Teddiebeertjies, opgestopte speelgoed-pikkewyne en dinosourusse sowel as speelgoed- mediese gereedskap is net ’n paar van die artikels wat verlede Dinsdagoggend aan die kinders uitgedeel is.

Elke oorhandiging is met ’n warm glimlag deur die klein kankerlyers begroet.

Die vrygewige gebaar was dié van twee maats, Anika Fourie en Marlee Nel. Die twee het armban-

de, oftewel scrunchies gemaak en verkoop. Hulle het die speelgoed met ’n gedeelte van hul opbrengs gekoop en op 10 Desember na die onkologie-saal geneem om dit aan die kankerlyers te skenk.

Die oortollige speelgoed is aan die verpleegsters oorhandig wat dit in die saal se speelkamer gaan berg.

Die bemarking en verkope van die armbande is meestal deur sosiale media gedoen. Die bandjies is teen R20 elk verkoop en daar is altesame 120 van hulle van die hand gesit, sê die twee tieners.

“Die kinders is ’n reuse-inspirasie en al is hulle so jonk, is hulle sterk en regte vegters.

“Oktober was kanker-bewusma-

kingsmaand en ons wou bewusmaking skep van kinders wat aan kanker ly.

“Vanweë al die behandeling wat die kinders moet ontvang, kry hulle nie aldag die kans om net gewone kinders te wees nie. Ek wou om dié rede geld insamel en speelgoed koop sodat wanneer hulle daarmee speel, hulle net vir ’n kort tydjie van die kanker sal vergeet en net ’n kind sal wees en genot sal hê,” sê Anika.

Anika het vanjaar haar matriekjaar aan die Hoërskool Brackenfell voltooi en Marlee is ’n gr. 6-leerder by die Laerskool Bastion.

“Ons wil almal bedank wat ons projek ondersteun het en vir al die donasies,” sê Anika.

Only 12 dogs left at animal welfare Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) has 12 dogs left at the animal shelter at Uitsig Animal Welfare in Melkbosstrand. Some of them have been waiting more than five years for a forever home.

The dogs can either be adopted or fostered. “Fostering allows the animal to get out of the shelter environment while waiting for a forever home.

“The foster can teach them how to be part of normal family life and help ready them for adoption,” says Jenni Davies, spokesperson for FAW. Home-checks are required and animal behaviour advice will be provided for adopted or fostered dogs.

“It costs R600 to adopt a dog, which includes vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, sterilisation and a free vet check at a Durbanville-based vet following the adoption.”

ie Redelinghuys-egpaar is nou al kenners as dit by reuse-burgers kom.

Vroeër vanjaar het hulle glo die grootste burger ter wêreld gemaak en nou is hulle ook die nie-amptelike rekordhouers vir die grootste burger op ’n spyskaart ter wêreld.

Joe en Anna van Penhill Estate is die eienaars van Annie’s Ladies Bar in Stikland,

waar al die aksie die afgelope paar maande afgespeel het.

Hier het die twee eers op 27 Julie ’n burger van 79,5 kg aanmekaar gesit.

Daarna het baie kliënte gevra wanneer hulle nog so iets gaan maak, vertel Joe. “Toe sê ek kom ons stel nog ’n wêreldrekord op. Ons het gegaan vir die grootste burger in die wêreld op ’n spyskaart.”

Op 30 November het hulle dié uitdaging aangepak en ’n burger van altesaam 123 kg gemaak. Dit het bestaan uit twee patties van

35 kg elk, vier verskillende souse en meer as twintig ander bestanddele.

Om die patties te braai, het die Redelinghuyse ’n spesiale braairooster laat ontwerp – hul tweede nadat die vorige rekord opgestel is. Die buns is in agt dele sodat die brood makliker bak.

Met dié geleentheid het hulle besluit om ook iets vir minderbevoorregtes by te dra.

Burger-eters moes R100 per kaartjie betaal en die opbrengs is aan Grace Animal Sanctuary geskenk.

Die “grootste burger” pronk nou op Annie’s Ladies Bar se spyskaart en Joe sê hulle kan met bestelling ’n prys uitwerk.

Hy skat ’n burger van so 80 kg sal R13 950 kos. Hy sê dit is perfek vir ’n jaareindfunksie.

Die roosters waarop die patties gebraai is, gaan ook nou teen hul muur hang. Joe sê dit gee ’n goeie idee van hoe groot die burgers kan wees.

Om ’n rekord amptelik by Guinness World Records te laat sertifiseer kos sowat R11 600.

Joe sê hulle gaan nie hierdie duur proses volg nie, maar is tevrede met die grootte van hul burger. Hoewel dit nie seker is of dié burger inderdaad die grootste een ter wêreld op ’n spyskaart is nie, is dit definitief die grootste een wat die meeste mense in hul lewe sal sien.

Drugs a problem in Parow – CPF RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj For nearly a decade now the Parow Community Policing Forum (CPF) has been battling the drug scourge in the area.

The CPF covers a wide area, stretching from Tygerberg Valley Road in Burgundy Estate to Parow Valley in Francie van Zijl Drive.

To help in the drug fight, the CPF has over the years approached several entities, including the provincial and national police departments. Despite these efforts, the sale of drugs are still rife, says CPF chair Roger Cannon.

A worrying factor is that a lot of the buyers are young students.

“Drugs have a ripple effect. It leads to other forms of crimes such as house breakins and robberies,” he says.

In September, the police raided several suspected drug dens which led to the arrest of six suspects – two men and four women.

Confiscated drugs included mandrax and tik.

Some of the other major crimes to hit Parow this year is the murder of student Jesse Hess (19) and her step-grandfather Chris Lategan (85) in August.

Recently the police also responded to a cash-in-transit heist at a shopping centre in Voortrekker Road, Parow, in which two suspects were arrested in Nyanga following a high-speed chase.

They donated toys to a few of the young children in the care of the centre. Shoe boxes containing toiletries, clothing, toys and sweets were given to the children as early Christmas presents. “We bought all of the presents,” Lt Col Kobus van Dyk, police spokesperson, says. About 35 children benefitted from the initiative which forms part of the police’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign.

Cannon, who has been staying in Parow for nearly 18 years, says the CPF wants to work with non-profit organisations and churches.

“There is already a good working relationship between us, the neighbourhood watches and the Parow police.”

He says the Parow police are extremely under-resourced and under-staffed.

“We want to encourage members of the public to get involved, to get to know the police and have an understanding of how they work,” he says.

Cannon, who also runs a business in Montague Gardens, says he has been involved in the community for many years and plans to be involved for many more years to come.

ne of the world’s biggest wrestling events returns to South Africa in 2020.

WWE Live will return to South African shores on Wednesday 29 April at the Grand Arena in GrandWest before heading to the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Thursday 30 April.

Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg will host the last two shows on Friday and Saturday 1 and 2 May. Fans attending WWE Live will see their favourite stars, including Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Bobby Lashley and Aleister Black, among others.

Oupa draf sy 250ste Parkrun kaf NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

E

nigeen kan aan Parkrunwedlope deelneem.

Vra net vir Bertus Byker (68), ’n oupa van drie wat Saterdag sy 250ste een voltooi het. En dit ten spyte van ’n kankerdiagnose.

Byker is die eerste persoon wat hierdie mylpaal by die Bellville-Parkrun behaal het en net een van ’n handjievol wat dit landwyd gedoen het.

Oor die wêreld heen neem duisende mense elke Saterdagoggend aan Parkrun-wedlope deel. Dié gratis uitdagings strek oor 5 km en lok mense van alle vermoëns. Die eerste Parkrun is einde 2011 in Suid-Afrika aangebied nadat dit in 2004 in Londen begin is. Deesdae is meer as twee miljoen mense wêreldwyd

by Parkrun geregistreer.

Byker, wat in Goodwood Park bly, se eie liefde vir hierdie konsep het in Desember 2013 begin nadat sy dogter, Carike (31), hom daarvan vertel het. Hy’t aanvanklik saam met haar deelgeneem, maar die gogga het gou gebyt en hy het begin om op sy eie na byeenkomste in verskillende areas te gaan.

Hy het selfs die oorspronklike Parkrun-roete in Bushy Park, Londen, voltooi, toe hy in 2015 daar gekuier het.

Byker, ’n oud-ingenieur wat by die Stad Kaapstad se paaiedepartement gewerk het, se aftreejare was op ’n drafstap en positief. Maar in 2018 het alles amper ontspoor toe prostaatkanker by hom gediagnoseer is.

“Ek het aanvanklik nie besef ek het prostaatkanker nie, maar bloedtoetse het dit uitgewys.”

Hy moes 35 keer bestraling kry en ook hormoonbehandeling ondergaan. Veral dié behandeling het hom geraak en hy het gewig opgetel, energie verloor en warm gloede gekry.

Hy’t egter steeds elke Saterdag gaan draf, hoewel sy tye nie meer so goed gelyk het as voorheen nie. “Ek was bang as ek eers ophou, gaan ek nie weer aan die gang kom nie,” vertel hy oor sy besluit om eerder aan te hou hardloop. “En dit was natuurlik lekker.”

Mettertyd het sy gesondheid

verbeter en hy is nou in remissie, waarvoor hy baie dankbaar is.

Deesdae is byna sy hele gesin Parkrun-entoesiaste. Hulle deel ook graag foto’s en statistieke oor WhatsApp met mekaar.

Sy seun Rudolf (26) en ander dogter Ingrid Hagg (35) bly in Pretoria en neem daar deel.

Selfs sy kleinkinders is ywerige deelnemers.

Ingrid en haar man, Frans (39), se kinders, Willem (6), Emily (3) en Bernard (1) neem al deel “sodra hulle in ’n stootwaentjie pas”. Willem het self al 15 wedlope op sy eie voltooi en hy is nog nie eens sewe jaar oud nie.

Byker se vrou, Helmy, volg almal se vordering met belangstelling.

Hy het nie ’n gunstelingbaan nie, vertel hy, maar sê hy sal dikwels ’n roete kies na gelang van waarvoor hy lus is. Vinnige bane is byvoorbeeld by Rondebosch en Century City, waar Durbanville en Bellville se Parkrun-roetes bekend is vir hul bulte. “Elke baan is anders, dis wat dit interessant maak. As elke week presies dieselfde is, is dit nie lekker nie.”

Sy “tuis”-roete is die een by Bellville en ook die een waar hy al die meeste gehardloop het (107 keer).

Daarom wou hy ook hier sy 250ste wedloop voltooi.

Oor dié mylpaal is hy dankbaar, veral omdat hy nog gesond genoeg is om deel te neem.

Parkrun het so ’n groot invloed op sy lewe gehad dat Byker almal wil aanmoedig om deel te neem.

“Mense moet kom probeer,” raai hy ander aan. “Niemand word (by die Parkrun-wedlope) uitgesluit nie.”

Dit is veral vir hom, as ouer persoon, ’n goeie aanmoediging om aktief te bly. “Soos jy ouer word, is die versoek om op te hou oefen baie groot.

“Dit is altyd makliker om niks te doen nie. Maar Park­run gee vir my daai aanmoediging (om iets te doen).”

Boonop is dit lekker om in ’n groep te draf en mense te ontmoet.

Alles wat mooi is vir volgende jaar Terwyl ek hier skryf voel ek asof my enkels met kettings vasgebind is en ek deur dryfsand voortsukkel.

Die einde van die jaar is in sig, maar dit voel so ver. Asof ek nooit die einde van die jaar gaan bereik nie.

Maar hoekom is mens so haastig dat ’n jaar moet eindig? Elke keer wanneer ek uitsien na die einde van die jaar, vra ek myself af hoekom?

Nie een jaar is dieselfde nie, het ek oor die jare gevind. Jy kan jou jaar so fyn as moontlik beplan, maar die lewe loop snaakse draaie. So was dit ook vir my in 2019. Al die planne wat ek vir my en my gesin gehad het, het nie uitgewerk nie.

Terwyl ander onbeplande goed weer verrassend positief uitgewerk het.

My voorneme was om so bietjie van die oortollige vette ontslae te raak, maar ten spyte van talle probeerslae het ek misluk.

Ek sou ook meer skryf, maar ek kon net nooit aan die gang kom nie. Tot die lewe gebeur het.

Toe ek weer sien lê ek op die naat van my rug in die hospitaal. Twee operasies later. Dit was glad nie deel van my beplanning nie.

Omtrent dieselfde tyd begin my bakkie so baie probleme te gee dat ek later nie meer kon bekostig om dit reg te maak nie.

Dit het ek nie sien kom nie.

Ek sê nie hierdie goed om te kla of om simpatie te kry nie, maar om te demonstreer hoe dinge uiteindelik ten goede uitwerk.

Toe ek uit die hospitaal kom en baie tyd op my hande het, het ek geskryf aan ’n manuskrip wat al jare lank onaangeraak rondgelê het. Teen die tyd wat ek weer begin werk het was ek amper 90% deur die boek. Sou ek dit reggekry het as ek nie by die huis was nie? Ek twyfel.

Was dit nie vir my bakkie wat opgepak het nie, sou ons nie ’n splinternuwe gesinsmotor aangeskaf het nie. Vir die eerste keer in dertien jaar het ons weer nuwe wiele gehad.

So hoekom wens ’n mens die jaar om?

Ek dink dit is daardie ingebore gevoel van om weg te wil kom van die negatiewe in die lewe. Of daardie hoop dat môre, oftewel volgende jaar, beter gaan wees.

Dat jy die ervaringe kan wegvee deur nuwes te skep.

Vir Suid-Afrikaners was 2019 ’n helse jaar. So baie dinge het verkeerd geloop.

Dit is nou meer as ooit duidelik dat ons land wanbestuur word. Hiervoor is daar genoeg bewyse voor die Zondo-kommissie.

Ons het nie krag nie. Ons het nie water nie. Ons lugdiens is in sy tjops. Ek het te min vingers en tone om alles op te noem wat in hierdie land verkeerd is. Al leen ek ook by iemand méér tone en vingers, sal dit nie genoeg wees nie.

In ag genome hierdie toedrag van sake, moet ons uitsien na volgende jaar? Moet ons hoop dat dit volgende jaar beter sal gaan? Ek weet nie wat volgende jaar vir die land inhou nie. As ek eerlik moet wees, sien ek onweerswolke op die horison saampak. Die regering kan ons nie regeer nie.

As ’n mens egter met ’n fyn kam tussen al die negatiewe dinge kyk, sal jy vind dat daar tog ’n gryntjie hoop is. Die Springbokke is weer die wêreldkampioen.

Ons het gedink ons sal nooit weer glorie op die grootste verhoog bereik nie, maar vir die volgende vier jaar kan ons breëbors rondloop.

Kom ons geniet die laaste paar dae van die jaar saam met familie en vriende.

En ons hoop dat 2020 ons gaan verras met goeie goed wat ons nie sien kom het nie.

Ten eerste is dit ’n baie belangrike dokument met betrekking tot jou eiendom.

Dit is nie maar net ’n wyse van geld maak uit die verkoper van ’n eiendom nie.

Nakomingsertifikate gaan oor die beskerming van jou eiendom en veral jou en jou gesin se lewe.

Die koste van die sertifikaat: Ja, daar ís kansvatters.

En die eerste teken daarvan is wanneer die koste van die inspeksie ’n skamele R500 beloop.

Laat ek verduidelik. ’n Inspeksie verg ’n deeglike ondersoek van elke aspek van jou elektriese installasie, nie slegs die uitskryf van ’n dokument van vier bladsye nie. Dit verg ook talle elektriese toetse, waarvan die koste van die toetsapparaat sowat R25 000 beloop.

Voeg daarby reiskoste, reistyd, inspeksietyd, die tyd wat dit verg om die sertifikaat te dokumenteer en miskien die belangrikste, die verantwoordelikheid wat daarmee gepaard gaan.

Daarbenewens verg dit die nodige kennis, wat verkry word eerstens deur vakleerling-opleiding. Dan volg die bestudering (en begrip) van die bedradingsregulasies.

Suksesvolle aflegging van die eksamen moet opgevolg word met praktiese opleiding, en daarna assessering deur ’n gekwalifiseerde eksaminator.

Eers dan kan die student by die departement van arbeid om sy lisensie aansoek doen.

Hierdie hele proses beloop duisende rande, uitgesluit sy tyd en toerusting. Die

bedradingselektrisiën verdien dus sekerlik ’n beter tarief as die beweerde R500.

Laastens kan ek byvoeg, indien die koper enige defekte verwant aan die installasie bemerk, stel dit die vorige eienaar bloot aan vervolging, wat op sy beurt natuurlik die persoon kan vervolg wat die sertifikaat uitgereik het.

Dit op sigself kan natuurlik duisende rande beloop.

En wie ly daaronder?

My pleidooi is, maak seker jy kry ’n geloofwaardige nakomingsertifikaat.

Begraafplaas se toestand skok So gaan ek mos op 4 Desember na ’n verassingsdiens by die Maitland-krematorium.

Soos jy die begraafplaas nader van Goodwood se kant, besef jy skielik dat jou belasting- en heffinggeld nie na behore gebruik word nie.

Die begraafplaas lyk soos ’n “jungle”, die heinings is gesteel, die grafte lê om. Jy sien nie personeel wat die plek netjies moet hou nie. By die krematorium is die verval van die eens statige geboue ook ’n skreiende skande.

Wie dink die owerhede met wie het hulle te doen? Ons betaal ons krom, maar kry niks vir ons geld nie. Die enigste manier dat so iets sal werk, is as dit in private hande gelaat word en al die munisipale “fat cats” verjaag word.

Ek het al lankal besluit ek gaan nie in enige munisipale begraafplaas “rus” nie.

Ek het ’n graf gekoop vir my en my geliefde in Klipheuwel se gedenkpark.

Hoe maak ons om die onbevoegde mense wat ons verteenwoordig, uit te kry?

Blykbaar werk die tegnici (elektrisiëns) tot 22:00 saans.

My houding was “ag, die mense doen maar net hul werk, maar hoekom doen hulle nie nou hul werk nadat ek betaal het nie”?

Ongerief is die minste om van te praat. ’n Mens kan gesels pleks van TV kyk, jy kan met gas kook en kerse of lampies aansteek.

Maar jou veiligheid word ingeboet – geen veiligheidstelsels (alarms, kameras, elektriese heinings, selfoonbatterye) kan werk nie. Jou gesondheid word belemmer as jou medikasie in ’n yskas gehou moet word. Hoekom het die Stad Kaapstad munisipale standaarde en ordonnansies wat hulle self nie kan eerbiedig nie? Hoekom maak hulle beloftes wat hulle nie kan nakom nie?

Also the professionalism and passion that goes into their landscaping is really amazing. Anton just has a good eye for a beautiful garden setup. He has been doing gardens for well over 30 years now.

But what amazed me so much is the owners’ (Anton and Melanie) story on this business and how they got to this point.

They have been in business for a mere 7 years, but it seems more like 17 years or more with the way they are operating.

New sponsor for cycle tour announced T

he organisers of the 99er Cycle Tour announced Gryphon Asset Management as the new headline sponsor for the 2020 event. The event takes place on Saturday 8 February in Durbanville. Not only is the Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour a favourite on the cycling calendar and the third largest race in the Western Cape, it’s also a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The race is organised and hosted by the El Shaddai Christian School in Durbanville and is the main fundraising activity for the school. There are over 350 volunteers in the form of parents, staff, pupils, alumni and past parents involved on race day.

In their quarter-final clash against Kenya, Blitzboks turned in a clinical second-half display to see out their fellow Africans in a 17-5 win.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, though. Local hearts were sent aflutter when, against the run of play, Kenya took an early 5-0 lead

through an unconverted try by Alvin Otieno.

However, Nel would restore parity, much to the delight of the home crowd, but Justin Geduld failed to convert, leaving the scores deadlocked at 5-5 at half-time.

During the tournament, Geduld became the fourth South African player in the World Series to score 1000 career points after Cecil Afrika, Branco du Preez and Seabelo Senatla.

Shortly after the restart, Nel would secure his brace after rounding off a well-orchestrated lineout, converted by Geduld. Selwyn Davids put the game beyond Kenya’s grasp when he chased down a kick by skipper Soyizwapi. Nel, however, could not play in the final after picking up an injury in the semi-final win. He was sorely missed.

“It was a pity that I could not play in the final, but that is the way rug-

by goes sometimes,” said Nel. “At least I played in two full tournaments and we did very well. I am now returning to fifteens, but I am very pleased with my short comeback to sevens. At least I know my conditioning will be right up there when I join the Stormers soon.”

Meanwhile, the Springbok women’s Sevens team, Imbokodo, who made their debut at the Cape Town Sevens, finished 10th. Coach Paul Delport applauded his squad’s efforts, saying the tenthplace finish was what they were aiming for.

“We realised that our intensity was not good enough and, therefore, our defence suffered and we made some poor decisions on attack,” said Delport.

“But that was always par for the course as we last played at any level close to this last year at the Rugby World Cup Sevens.”
