COVID-19: MORE PEOPLE JOBLESS
Food parcels welcomed RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
T
he Monte Vista and Plattekloof Glen Ratepayers Association says it is grateful to the mayor and City of Cape Town for the food parcels and Covid-19 hygiene care packs donated to residents in need recently. Dan Plato, mayor, visited Monte Vista and Edgemead on Thursday last week. A combined 500 Covid-19 hygiene care packs and 100 food parcels were donated to organisations to be distributed to residents in need in these areas, the City says. Pierre Gouws, chairman of the ratepayers association, says his only big concern is that
the donations may come to an end. “I was very surprised when I spoke to the mayor and he agreed with me, we are both actually quite shocked at how many people are now starting to lose their jobs. “More people are becoming dependent on these food parcels than ever before and that is the scary point for me, and actually sad to see,” Gouws says. He says people not being able to receive food parcels will have an even more detri-
mental effect as we head towards the festive season, Christmas and the new year. Gouws says he hopes that someone will be able to continue to distribute food parcels in future. A spokesperson for the mayor told TygerBurger that the food drive started at the beginning of the lockdown period and that has been going on as the need for assistance continued. “I note the reality of many Capetonians who have been affected by this pandemic. to operation, the need for assistance remains under level one, and we have filled in the gaps wherever possible through the distribution of care packs and food relief to residents in need,” Plato says. He says the City is working hard to drive economic recovery and will need residents to work with them and support them in the drive. “We have overcome the worst of the Covid19 pandemic together, but we cannot become complacent. As we work towards rebuilding our economy and lives, continued recovery depends on all of us, our responsibility is not over. “It is vital that we continue to take the necessary precautions,” Plato says.
