T

hree alleged drug dealers were caught by police in Brackenfell last week; one from Kuils River after a high-speed chase that ended in Protea Heights, and another two from Burgundy Estate who were caught in the act in the parking lot at Vredekloof Centre.

The first arrest was made on Tuesday 5 November at 10:30 when WO Terence Nortjé and Sgt Kobus Grobler, of Brackenfell police station, received information of a man selling drugs at the railway station in Brackenfell.

“They notified the flying squad and local security companies to block off possible exit routes. When they stopped the suspect, who was driving a Hyundai Atos, he sped away from police and a chase ensued,” says police spokesperson, Capt Erica Crous.

Minutes later, the vehicle was pulled off on the corner of Kruis- and Kruin Road, Protea Heights and the suspect was arrested after tik and cash were found on him.

A case of reckless and negligent driving was also opened against the 40-year-old man from Kuils River.

More arrests followed the next day (Wednesday) when Nortjé and Grobler once again received information of drugs being

sold at Vredekloof Centre in Brackenfell.

According to information received the specific vehicle was spotted on previous occasions by members of the public at various locations in Brackenfell, allegedly selling drugs. “This time police enlisted the help of law enforcement officers Conan Fick and his group, farm watch members and members of SJC Security to block off possible escape routes,” says Crous.

The suspects were caught in the act in a Silver Volkswagen Jetta in the parking area of Vredekloof Centre at approximately 10:00.

“Upon searching the vehicle, police found 20 packets of cocaine, nine packets of khat (estimated street value of R8 700) and a small

amount of dagga. A large amount of cash and dangerous weapons were also found in their possession.”

These arrests follow after a major sting operation on 3 October saw the arrest of a 39year-old man in Brackenfell, after mandrax worth R7.8 million was found in his possession at a local warehouse. On 6 October another two men were arrested after being caught off-loading and transporting some 200kg of dagga in Brackenfell.

The two men (25 and 27) from Burgundy Estate were arrested and detained at Brackenfell police station.

They appeared in Kuils River magistrate’s court on Friday.

uy Fawkes is vanjaar in Parow en omliggende gebiede heelwat stiller gevier as vorige jare.

Slegs enkele voorvalle is aangemeld van kinders wat mekaar met verf of politoer besmeer het.

Guy Fawkes word jaarliks op 5 November gevier.

Vanjaar het die Stad Kaapstad egter geen persele beskikbaar gestel waar mense hul vuurwerke kon afvuur nie. Die besluit is deur talle inwoners en veral diereliefhebbers verwelkom.

Vuurwerk-handelaars was egter nie so in hul skik oor die Stad se besluit nie (“Obey the law on Guy Fawkes”, 30/10).

Volgens die Stad se syfers is daar vanjaar tog heelparty voorvalle aangemeld van vuurwerke wat onwettig afgevuur is.

Uit ’n verklaring wat verlede week uitgereik is, blyk dat 272 sulke gevalle gerapporteer is. Altesame 35 gevalle van die onwetti-

ge verkoop van vuurwerke is aangemeld.

Helen Carstens, raadslid vir wyk 5, wat Edgemead insluit, sê sy is slegs bewus van een gerapporteerde voorval van vuurwerke wat in haar wyk onwettig afgevuur is, ten spyte van die groot aantal klagtes wat op Facebook aangemeld is deur mense wat vuurwerke hoor afgaan.

“Die geraas weergalm, so dit mag dalk in ’n ander omgewing ook afgevuur gewees het.”

Carstens sê sy is nie seker of daar ná die gerapporteerde voorval in Edgemead teen enigiemand opgetree is nie.

Dit was ’n ewe stil aand in wyk 10, wat ’n gedeelte van Parow insluit. “Ek was in die wyk tot ná 20:00 en die enigste vuurwerk wat afgevuur is, was deur kinders in die woonstelblokke, maar geen klagtes of drama is amptelik aangemeld nie,” sê Jackie Visser, wyksraadslid.

Cheryl Visser, raadslid vir wyk 1 wat Monte Vista, Plattekloof en Panorama insluit, sê sy het ook geen klagtes ontvang nie.

“Ek kan dit skaars glo. Ek het geen klap-

pers hoor afgaan nie.”

Franchesca Walker, raadslid vir wyk 26 wat Parow en Elsiesrivier insluit, het ook nie klagtes ontvang nie. “Buiten die kinders wat mekaar gesmeer het,” sê sy.

JP Smith, burgemeesterskomiteelid vir veiligheid, sê die openbare nood-kommunikasiesentrum het verlede Dinsdag tussen 06:00 en 23:00 altesame 345 oproepe ontvang – die meeste het verband gehou met die afvuur van vuurwerke.

Hy sê die Stad se wetstoepassingsdienste, metropolisie, verkeersdienste, sowel as die Dierebeskermingsvereniging van die Kaap van Goeie Hoop, is op gereedheidsgrondslag geplaas.

Metro-polisielede het in onder meer Kleinvlei, Eersterivier en Ravensmead op vuurwerkmateriaal beslag gelê. Só ook die wetstoepassingseenheid in Atlantis, Big Bay en Athlone.

“Ek doen ’n beroep op gemeenskapsleiers, skole en families om te begin praat oor Guy Fawkes en die skade wat dit berokken,” sê Smith.

While 16 Days of Activism is a powerful campaign to bring awareness about violence against women and children, it is not enough.

This is the opinion of Ricki Fransman, director of Childline Western Cape. Fransman says there needs to be awareness and interventions throughout the year, to curb violence against women and children.

“As an organisation, our focus is working with vulnerable children who are at risk of, or have experienced abuse, sexual abuse and, or trauma. The 16 Days of Activism, therefore, is a vehicle for us to create even more awareness of the issue,” Fransman told TygerBurger.

He says during the campaign, the organisation is inundated with requests for their prevention programmes.

Childline Western Cape’s Tygerberg office has a few events planned for this period.

These include body safety campaigns at schools in Goodwood, Salt River and Eerste River.

Childline works with children between the ages of three and 17 years who have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse and rape and communicates in a language is child-friendly.

Big plans for 16 Days of Activism RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj November is a month filled with many celebrations including World Vegan Day, World Kindness Day, Sandwich Day, Guy Fawkes Day as well as the month of Movember – a celebration which involves men growing their moustaches to raise awareness around men’s health issues.

Apart from these, November is also the month in which South Africans celebrate 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse.

This takes place from Monday 25 November to Tuesday 10 December.

To mark this event, Parow residents, churches, the police, Metro police, fire brigade as well as the local community policing forum, neighbourhood watches, local businesses and ratepayers’ associations are planning an event for Saturday 16 November at Hernus Kriel Senior Centre, a home for senior citizens. The event is spearheaded by the Parow West community neighbourhood watch.

Jean Fredericks, a member of the Parow Methodist Church, told TygerBurger on Friday the event is aimed at encouraging social cohesion.

“It will be in the form of a festive anti-crime awareness campaign and also a fun festival for family and friends.

“We will have a dog unit put on a show, line dancing, market stalls and musicians performing. There is also going to be a survivor of abuse who will be the special guest speaker,” Fredericks says.

She says they will also have an exhibition where visitors can learn about gender-based violence.

The Parow police station commander, Col Tebogo Jacobs, will address the gathering, while the brigade of the Anglican church will march through the streets.

According to the government website, www.gov.za, the department of women will be hosting a series of dialogues on violence against women and children this month.

Here in the Western Cape, similar talks will take place.

“The department of health, the premier and department of social development have a few plans in the pipeline,” Cayla Murray, spokesperson of the department of community safety, says.

The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Enough is Enough’.

Some of the department’s events include visits to the Fikile Aids Project in Gugulethu, the AFM Church in Strandfontein, Darul Muhtar, a madrasah in Ocean View, the Baptist Church in Bonteheuwel, A-Z Projects in Manenberg as well as the First Resource Centre in Hanover Park before closing off the campaign in Khayelitsha.

hile new MyCiTi bus routes are being rolled out in other parts of the city, frustrated commuters in the northern suburbs, might have to wait another 10 years for MyCiTi bus routes.

During a council sitting last week, Cape Town mayor Dan Plato, announced the City’s plans to put forward a proposal to approve an agreement with the Dutch government, whereby the City of Cape Town’s transport directorate will receive R300 million of grant funding over the next five to 10 years to improve public transport for commuters from Khayelitsha.

“This funding agreement is known as the Orio Project and is a collaboration between the City and the Dutch government for the roll-out of the MyCiTi bus service between Khayelitsha and Wynberg and Claremont,” said Plato.

The grant funding will be spent on the construction of new trunk routes and feeder routes for the MyCiTi buses, as well as bus stops and stations, and a bus depot in Khayelitsha.

“Given that the MyCiTi service will be connecting commuters with other modes of transport, such as minibus-taxis and trains, the funding will also assist in improving the Nyanga, Khayelitsha, Nolungile and Vuy-

ani public transport interchanges,” he said.

Felicity Purchase, Mayco member for transport, last week told TygerBurger that the roll-out of the above routes (Phase 2A), between the metro south-east and Claremont and Wynberg, currently enjoy priority.

“The other MyCiTi bus routes will only follow thereafter, and is dependent on the funding we get from national government – meaning, it is impossible to give exact dates or timelines at this stage,” she said.

She explained that the City’s approved Integrated Public Transport Network Plan 2032, includes a number of trunk routes serving the northern suburbs, when finally rolled out before or by 2032 – a trunk route on Symphony Way linking metro south east and Bellville to Durbanville; a trunk route linking Westlake and Bellville; and a trunk route linking Kraaifontein and Century City via Bellville.

In another development last week, a new route was introduced to connect commuters from Atlantis directly to Sea Point, via the Grand Parade.

“The 115 service is an extension of the T02 Atlantis route which mainly caters for commuters from Atlantis, as well as some from the Table View and Milnerton areas, who wish to travel to Sea Point and return without having to transfer to another bus,” the City stated in a press release.

Sanca offers interviewing training Sanca WC (the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) will be hosting their next training from Wednesday 20 November to Friday 22 November.

The training is a three-day Motivational Interviewing course and will cover a range of topics including working with client ambivalence, strategies to enhance motivation for change and dealing with client resistance. It is aimed at anyone and is presented

by social workers.

The course will take place at Sanca WC’s head office (18 Karoo Street, Bellville.) from 09:00 to 15:00. Cost is R1 200.

Winners of Tygerberg Matrieks se werke in Awards announced kunssentrum uitgestal T

ygerberg’s changemakers and influencers were honoured on Wednesday at the 4th Tygerberg Awards.

The event was held at Sanlam Auditorium and saw around 120 attendees networking and celebrating.

The guest speaker, Mayor Dan Plato, spoke about celebrating the positives.

“We have to focus on the good news in Cape Town,” he said.

Kemi Adebayo, executive director of the Tygerberg Heritage Festival, commended the hard work by all 47 nominees and the winners. “It is sometimes easier to complain than to appreciate. This is what the Tygerberg Award is about. We wanted to genuinely recognise and encourage them all. They are our unsung heroes in the Tygerberg area.”

All 43 nominees for the 15 different categories were identified through a selection process by the Tygerberg Heritage Festival

Die jaarlikse matriekkunsuitstalling by die Tygerberg-kunssentrum in Parow het pas geopen.

Die uitstalling word beskryf as die hoogtepunt op die sentrum se kalender.

“Die werk wat uitgestal word, spog met die leerders se beste vermoëns en vorm deel van hul matriek-eindeksamen se prakties-punte,” sê Greg Lawson, woordvoerder.

Die uitstalling is op Vrydag 1 November geopen.

Fransonette Swart, hoof van die kunssentrum, het die geleentheid geopen, wat deur skoolhoofde, onderwysers, ouers, amptenare van die departement van onderwys, sowel as sommige leerders, bygewoon is.

In haar toespraak het sy leerders aangemoedig om hul passie te vind en dit na Jason Duff van die Mountain View Academy in Monte Vista. te streef en te geniet.

Paartjie van Durbanville was verstom toe hul pasgebore eerstelingseuntjie die skaal by geboorte op bykans 6 kg getrek het.

Eli Kuter is op 22 Oktober in die MediClinic Durbanville met ’n keisersnit gebore en het ’n volle 5,95 kg geweeg – slegs 50 g onder 6 kg. Dít terwyl sy ma, Melissa Shaw Kuter, gesond is en nie aan diabetes ly nie – ’n siekte wat dikwels tot groter babas aanleiding gee.

Volgens Parent24 is die gemiddelde grootte van babas by geboorte tussen 2,5 kg en 4 kg.

Eli se trotse pa, Kuter Kuter, ’n radio-omroeper by Bok Radio, sê sy vrou wou graag ’n tweeling hê.

“Nou het sy sommer twee babas in een pakkie gekry,” lag hy.

Die plasenta was ook 1,2 kg – groot genoeg om twee babas te voed en heelwat groter as die normale 500 g.

Ceramics come under the spotlight Art ceramics will be celebrated at the annual curated ceramics market, which will be presented at Rust-en-Vrede in Durbanville on Saturday 16 November from 09:00 to 14:00.

A total of 30 curated stalls will showcase quality work.

Talks and lectures will be presented. Hennie Meyer will give a talk about his residency in Estonia last year when a number of international ceramic luminaries were invited to work together for three weeks, after which they held an exhibition of their work.

In addition, there will be a unique ceramics exhibition of work finished during a recent week of ceramic firing, where an anagama kiln was fired at the Millstone Pottery in McGregor.

The firing took 100 hours to

reach temperature and five tons of wood (invasive species) were used in the firing. The kiln took five days to cool down.

The results of this week, probably one-of-a-kind in South Africa, will be exhibited in the gallery in the main building at Rust-enVrede. In addition, there will be demonstrations of different clay processes by ceramic artists and potters at half-hour intervals.

There will also be food and coffee stalls, a bookstall, a children’s play area and a tombola stall.

This work by Ann Marais titled Guard Dog will be one of the pieces on sale at the ceramics market held in Durbanville on Saturday 16 November.

Sy is in 1879 in die Verenigde State gebore.

Ton Vosloo en Anet Pienaar-Vosloo, ’n egpaar met noue bande met die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US), het aangekondig dat hulle vanaf 2020 die Ton en Anet Vosloo-Leerstoel in Afrikaanse Taalpraktyk aan die US vir ’n tydperk van vyf jaar borg.

Leerstoel is ’n ander woord vir die meer gebruiklike professoraat of ’n hoogleraarskap.

Benewens die Leerstoel word geld ook beskikbaar gemaak vir beurse aan verdienstelike studente wat Afrikaans op nagraadse vlak aan die US studeer.

Volgens die Vosloo-egpaar is die Leerstoel gemik op die verdere uitbou van Afrikaans as belangrike instrument in diens van die Suid-Afrikaanse gemeenskap as ’n geheel.

Vosloo was tot 2015 altesaam 59 jaar in die bedryf as joernalis, redakteur, uitvoerende hoof en voorsitter van Naspers, en die afgelope drie jaar professor in joernalistiek aan die US. Pienaar-Vosloo, ook ’n oud-joernalis, is besig met die derde televisiereeks Mooi vir die VIA TV-kanaal. Sy is ook welbekend vir haar

rol as medestigter en direkteur van onder meer die Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, Aardklop en verskeie ander feeste landwyd. Sy is ook die eerste vroulike voorsitter van die Baxter-teater in Kaapstad.

Prof. Wim de Villiers, rektor en visekanselier van die US, sê die skenking help nie alleen met die handhawing van Afrikaans as onderrigmedium nie, maar ook met die bevordering van Afrikaans as wetenskap- en beroepstaal binne ’n meertalige gemeenskap.

“Sover ons weet is dit die eerste en enigste geborgde Leerstoel in Afrikaanse Taalpraktyk by enige universiteit,” voeg hy by.

Prof. Ilse Feinauer van die departement Afrikaans en Nederlands in die US se fakulteit lettere en sosiale wetenskap, is as bekleër van hierdie Leerstoel aangewys. Sy gee sedert 1982 aan die departement Afrikaans en Nederlands klas en is van 1996 betrokke by die nagraadse program in vertaling wat onder haar leiding van ’n nagraadse diploma in vertaling tot ’n PhD in vertaling uitgebou is.

“Dit is vir my ’n ongelooflike eer en voorreg om hierdie Leerstoel in die Afrikaanse Taalpraktyk te kan beklee. Ek gee alle krediet aan prof.

Wim de Villiers, wat die aanvoorwerk gedoen het om hierdie Leerstoel binne die departement Afrikaans en Nederlands ’n realiteit te maak.”

Volgens Feinauer is daar reeds beurse aan vier honneursstudente, drie magisterstudente, twee PhDstudente en een nadoktorale genootskap in Afrikaans en Nederlands vir 2020 toegeken.

“Hierdie Leerstoel skep vir die departement die geleentheid om by uitstek nagraadse studente te bemagtig om in en oor Afrikaans navorsing te kan doen, ten einde ná afloop van hul studie in en met Afrikaans ’n professionele loopbaan te kan volg,” voeg sy by.

“Anet en ek het die genade dat ons kan help. Afrikaans is, soos Jan Rabie geskryf het, ons suurstof.

“Dis nou die tyd om in te tree om hierdie ongelooflike kennisbron ter wille van ons nasie se toekoms verder uit te bou,” sê Vosloo.

WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS

Bring daardie rooi pen Die vrou sit in die kerk. Verveeld tydens ’n diens. Al weer. Sy is al moeg getel aan die bakstene teen die muur en kyk oudergewoonte na die lidmate wat voor haar sit. ’n Ander vrou is baie besig met die kerkbulletin. Die dominee sê iets en die lidmaat skryf onverskrokke aantekeninge op die papier neer.

“Ag, nog ’n hoogheilige,” dink vrou een geamuseerd en buig vooroor om te sien wat vrou twee skryf.

Tot haar skok kom sy agter dit is nie vroom notas oor die preek nie, maar aantekeninge oor hoe om die bulletin se taalgebruik te verbeter.

Hulle was van daardie oomblik af vriendinne.

Soos ’n gerehabiliteerde alkoholis in ’n fliek wil ek nou bieg – vrou twee is my ma. En sy was ’n taalonderwyseres. Vrou een is steeds ’n onderwyseres en kon seker aanklank vind by die rooipen-sindroom.

Hoewel ek graag sou wou skryf oor kerkrebelle wat bakstene tel en vriendskappe vorm, is hierdie eerder ’n verhaal van ’n irriterende gewoonte wat ’n mens se lewe stelselmatig verwoes. Oukei, dalk is ek net effens dramaties hieroor.

My ma het ’n ligte obsessie met ander se taalfoute.

Dis immers wat sy heeldag vir kinders moes leer.

Iewers langs die pad het sy net opgehou om by die kinders se foute te stop. Sy het nie net in die kerk gesit en die blaadjie gekorrigeer nie, maar soms die koerant, dikwels die TV en amper altyd pamflette se taalgebruik reggemaak.

Kyk, ek gaan nie vir jou lieg nie. Sy moes nie ver soek nie.

Mense.kan.nie.spel.nie.

Hulle gebruik ook die taal baie verkeerd. En as jy eers foute soek, is dit asof hulle oral is.

Hoewel ek baie ander eienskappe van my ma sou wou erf, het ek hierdie irriterende gewoonte aangeleer.

Die eerste keer dat ek dit agtergekom het, was nog op skool. Die cool kinders het ’n gewoonte gehad om vloekwoorde op alles te skryf. Die vloekwoorde was egter meestal verkeerd gespel. Weet jy hoe baie jy soos ’n loser voel as jy mense se vloekwoorde in jou kop korrigeer?

Baie. Die antwoord is baie.

Deesdae kan ek nie meer na ’n Kersmark gaan sonder om na my asem te snak oor die verkeerde spelling op produkte nie. En dis nie asof ek onskuldig is nie! Ek weet ek maak ook taalfoute. Hierdie rubriek self is seker deurspek daarvan. Maar kyk, as jy eers weet iets is verkeerd, dan kan jy nie ophou om dit op te let nie. Al is dit die onbenulligste ding.

Dis soos sommige rugbyliefhebbers.

Dikwels word hulle so vasgevang in wat die “ref” verkeerd gedoen en gemis het dat hulle vergeet om die spel te geniet.

Daar is so dikwels tye dat ek wens ek kon net van taalreëls vergeet en ’n program of tydskrif geniet.

Het jy geweet ’n mens praat van “onder meer” as jy praat van alles buiten mense en “onder andere” as jy na mense verwys? As jy so na die mensdom luister, weet die meeste mense dit nie. En nou gaan jy, soos ek, dit seker nooit weer kan hoor sonder om te dink dit is verkeerd nie.

Daar vang die vloek jou ook.

Ten minste het ek en my ma geleer om hierdie gewoonte tot ons familie se binnekring te beperk. En wanneer die taalkorrigeer-monster dreig om in die openbaar na vore te kom, onthou ek die belangrikste sê-ding van almal: “Jy kan óf vriende hê óf taalkundig korrek wees – nie albei nie.” – Nielen de Klerk

Munisipaliteit bedank vir diens As “nuwe inkommer” wil ek graag die plaaslike munisipale administrasie bedank.

Ek gee ’n opsomming van drie dinge wat ek die afgelope drie maande in die omgewing waar ek woon, waargeneem het, te wete in Queen- en Langenhovenstraat.

Nadat ’n onbedagsame motoris gedurende ’n naweek ’n lamppaal in Queenstraat omgery het, het ’n span werkers die Sondag om 08:00 opgedaag om die paal te vervang.

In antwoord op my vraag aan die voorman oor hoekom hulle dit op ’n Sondag doen, het hy gesê die vele gevalle van kabeldiefstal maak dit amper onmoontlik om volgens ’n rooster te werk en daarom word hierdie soort herstelwerk in ’n “stil” tyd

gedoen.

Ek het in Langenhovenstraat ook op ’n Sondagoggend ’n elektrisiteitspan aangetref wat besig was om aan ’n verspreidingsbord te werk. Die persoon in beheer se antwoord was dat hulle dié soort instandhoudingswerk op ’n Sondag verrig om ondernemings in ag te neem en die minimum ontwrigting te veroorsaak.

Op 11 September gedurende die uitsending van Binnelanders is ’n sterk stroom water opgemerk, wat langs die randsteen van die sypaadjie in Queenstraat afgeloop het.

Presies 20 minute nadat die nommer 021 590 1900 geskakel is, het ’n werknemer ’n stopkraan op die sypaadjie kom toedraai.

Ek het omstreeks 09:00 die volgende oggend met my motor by Karsten Horizon Fruit verby gery en opgemerk dat die pyp reeds die vorige aand herstel is.

Met die onlangse hernuwing van my voertuiglisensie was 11 mense voor my in die ry.

Iemand het ’n opmerking gemaak oor die wagtyd. ’n Jong man het dadelik kapsie gemaak oor die opmerking.

Hy het verwys na die werkswyse van ’n naburige lisensiekantoor.

Nog ’n persoon het dit beaam met die volgende: “Hierdie personeel wérk en beskik oor die nodige kennis.”

Ná die tyd het ek hulle gaan uitvra en het hulle erken dat hulle in ’n ander munisipale gebied woon, maar liewer ’n paar rand spandeer en hierheen ry om gehelp te word as dat hul bloeddruk daaronder ly.

Die munisipaliteit kan dit gerus oorweeg om van dié fikses vir die jaarlikse Sanlam-marathon in te skryf.

A foetus is still a human being

Please think before you ‘scream’

Laylaa Trevor says a foetus is not a child (“Abortions: get your facts straight”, TygerBurger 6 November).

My old Concise Oxford Dictionary disagrees.

Its definition of “child” includes “unborn or newborn human being”, and the expression “with child”, meaning pregnant.

We might be more likely to call it a baby than a child, an unborn baby, but it is a baby, a human baby. And that’s what is important: not if it’s a child, but that he or she is a human being.

This is addressed to Stapper (“Skerp klippe op sypaadjies is ’n gevaar”, TygerBurger 18 September), Tammy Coetzee (“Pavements are a huge concern”, TygerBurger 9 October) and others who hold the same opinion.

We all pay our rates to local government and it is their duty, as it was years ago when I was a kid, to keep the streets and pavements clean.

Then a few years back that “chore” was passed on to the homeowner or tenant. I had more weeds than grass on my pavement for quite a few years, then came the water restrictions and the weeds outnumbered the grass, please note that I don’t say lawn.

I removed the weeds and grass from my front grounds and the pavement and replaced it with stones. Very little time spent looking after it at the cost of R22 000. Have I been reimbursed by the council for that? No! No problem for me to lift the stones and “give” the pavement back to the council and let them keep it clean.

They have almost doubled the value of my house, which is a prefab, to just under R2 million, so up goes my rates.

The bank told me, when I bought the house, that my income was too low. So my daughter became a co-owner, on paper. With her being a co-owner I can’t get a pensioner’s discount on my rates, even though my daughter lives with her husband in their house and makes no contribution to upkeep, electricity, or the rates of my house.

And you have a problem with stones on pavements?

Abortion is taking an innocent life Regarding “Abortions: get your facts straight” printed in TygerBurger on 6 November.

The argument often made by pro-choice or abortion supporters is “that no-one has the right to tell them what to do with their body”.

If the unborn baby (I prefer baby as “foetus” is defined as “offspring”, “hatching of young” or “bringing forth” according to Wikipedia) is part of the woman’s body, then why can the unborn baby: . and mother have different blood groups; . have different genetic codes; . have different genders; . can even live while the mother dies; . die while the mother lives?

By all means, do to your own body what you wish ... but an abortion is taking an innocent life ... no matter how you spin it.

e was just nine years old when his father bought him his first knife and ever since then Rick Afonso has had a love-relationship with knives.

Afonso, from Fish Hoek, is the chair of the Cape Knifemakers Guild, who is hosting its annual show on 22 and 23 November. “Since I got my first knife, a Swiss army knife, I have always had a knife with me. I used my knife as a tool to cut everything. I spent some time on a farm and there was always something that needed cutting, so a knife became a constant,” says Afonso.

When he was sixteen he went to a gun show in Johannesburg with his father and his passion for knives was further established. “At the gun show there was a stand with custom knives. Comparing the knives I owned with those knives was like comparing a Toyota with a Ferrari. I then decided to teach myself the art of knifemaking. It was the beginning of the internet so I mostly used books to teach myself. I have only done one formal course,” says Afonso.

According to him, television programmes like Forged in Fire definitely help to make knifemaking more popular.

“We have noticed an increase in people showing an interest in the art of knifemaking, so programmes like those are welcomed. On the negative side it shows only a little bit of what knifemaking is about.

There are processes that are not shown because it doesn’t make for good television.

This gives viewers the idea that in order to make a good knife takes an hour. I am not saying that you cannot make a knife in an hour, but the real artworks take days, weeks or even months,” says Afonso.

He reckons that knifemaking will be around for a long time. “Knives are proba-

In ancient times knives were used for war and to cut things and today still we are using knives for cutting, even though we don’t use it for killing. The ideals for the guild are those of perfection through work, skill through learning, and fellowship through generosity, where we are able to create a knife of the highest order of craftsmanship from a piece of blank steel,” says Afonso.

@samantha_lee121 The Cape Town Society of Model and Experimental Engineers will be hosting its open day from Saturday 16 to Sunday 17 November.

The club is situated in Rondebosch on the corners of Erin, Duke and Campground roads in Croquet Lane behind the Rondebosch Croquet Club. The club has members from areas including Fish Hoek, Tafelsig, Bothasig, Vredehoek, Parow, Milnerton and the broader Cape Town area. The club offers members an opportunity to learn basic engineering skills including basic electronics, track construction and soldering techniques.

Andre van Breda, club chair, says the club has grown considerably in the last few years.

“This used to be a hobby for older people, now we see a lot more youngsters joining.

We have one boy who joined us after visiting last year’s open day. He and his mother came to see what the club was about. He is 14 years old and he comes to meetings every Wednesday,” says Van Breda.

There are also members in their early 20s.

“The workshop is a hive of activity. We gained so many members in the last four to

five years that we needed to buy more equipment,” he says. “I am a firm believer in getting the youngsters involved because when I am no longer here, I need to have passed my knowledge on.”

The club will be open to the public from 09:00 to 16:00. Entrance fees are R20 per adult and R10 per child. Children under the age of six enter free. The money raised will be used for maintenance of the clubhouse and to fund the various sections of the club with their projects.

“We also support some of the pensioners who are part of the club and can’t afford their subs. With the fundraisers we subsidise their membership fees. Because we are leasing a building from the municipality, we need to maintain it. Other funds raised go toward projects at the club,” says Van Breda.

One of the biggest attractions each year is the model train rides. Children will be able to ride the 5-inch gauge live steam engine and parents are welcome to join in.

Tickets will cost R5 per child. The rides will be available from 09:00 to 12:00, then 13:30 to 15:30. This allows for maintenance of the locomotives.

Model trains and cars will also be on display at the event with several locomotives and tracks in operation. There will also be a display on how toy soldiers and cannons are made which will be available for sale. Club magazines and books on display will be sold at bargain prices. Refreshments will also be sold on site.

Music magic with Marwood and Madzar British violinist Anthony Marwood and renowned Serbian pianist Aleksander Madzar will present the Cape Town Concert Series’ annual celebrity recital on Saturday 16 November at the Baxter concert hall at 19:30.

St Petersburg Ballet brings classic to Cape Town

ne of Cape Town’s most popular events returns to the city’s streets next month.

The Twilight Run, which is organised by the Community Chest, normally marks the start of the December party season, but this year’s event has a much more serious goal in mind.

“The 2019 edition of the Twilight Run will again attract thousands of Capetonians and visitors to the 5km route that winds its way around our streets. We are inviting everyone to join us this year as we take a stand against gender-based violence,” says Lorenzo Davids, CEO of Community Chest.

“We regard it as a moral obligation to continue the fight against gender-based violence. On Tuesday 3 December, we aim to create one of the largest public events to honour the thousands of women and children that have been affected by femicide, abuse, neglect, rape and brutality.”

The entity invites all companies, schools, organisations, families and private citizens and specifically fathers, brothers, uncles, nephews, religious leaders and male friends, and their partners to enter the run on behalf

of all women.

“Twilight has always been one of the most inclusive events of the year, attracting corporates, small businesses, organisations, schools, families and individuals in a festive atmosphere that guaranteed participants a good time, in aid of a good cause,” says Davids. “This year will be no different as Community Chest invites you to join the 2019 event and become a superhero as an act of solidarity against gender-based violence.

Two organisations will benefit from the money raised through this year’s event, and they will be present at the event to receive their cheques from us.”

The event will enjoy the support of media personality Tracey Lange, Obama Fellow and founder, and executive director of Women Lead Movement Melene Rossouw, as well as the comedian Yaaseen Barnes.

by Jarrad Ricketts and Paxton, as well as upand-coming singer, Ameer Hendricks.

The event sets off at 19:00, and all finishers will be awarded Twilight Medals.

The annual Tears Sleepathon is a not-tobe-missed event that allows animal-lovers to get involved with the rescue, sterilisation and support of homeless dogs and cats, or those in impoverished areas.

The Emma Animal Rescue Society (Tears) is an animal welfare organisation that homes, provides sanctuary for and sees to the medical needs of dogs and cats in Vrygrond, Redhill, Ocean View and Masiphumelele.

The Sleepathon will be held on three consecutive Saturdays – 16, 23 and 30 November – at the Tears Animal Rescue shelter in Sunnydale. During the event, participants will get to curl up next to a homeless hound or cute kitty for the night, make them feel loved and also enjoy an evening of festivities.

The aim of the event, according to the organisation’s marketing coordinator Luke Kruyt, is fourfold. “It’s to raise awareness, raise money – because we desperately need it – find homes for dogs and cats, and we’re always looking for volunteers,” he says, adding that the more volunteers the Tears shelter, hospital and veterinary clinic has, the more animals it can take care of.

Tickets to participate in the furry fun cost R200 per person and can be bought online. Entrants can sign up as individuals, a corporate team, or as a family or group of friends. Once tickets have been purchased, a welcome pack will be emailed to recipients who are then tasked to raise funds – either through social media, by pledging donations or through the sale of goodies – in support of three causes at Tears.

“There’s the rescue, rehab and rehome cause – that’s for the shelter and rescue dogs, and making sure they get all the veterinary care they need to become wellrounded and get homed. The other cause is to help to offer free sterilisations in the communities we work in. And the last is to support the welfare and mobile dog clinics which offer subsidised veterinary care,” explained Kruyt.

PHOTO: RACINE EDWARDES Last year the shelter raised more than R500 000 but its monthly running costs are currently standing at more than R1 million, due to the fact that it services communities who can’t afford the care their animals need. This year, Tears is hoping to generate even more money.

On the day they’ve booked, participants will check in at 17:00 at the shelter where they will receive much more than just 14 hours with man’s best friends. A statement on the event read: “Sleepathoners will enjoy a festive evening of celebration, live music and socialising in a chilled and comfortable space. One of three gourmet plant-based meals, hot cocoa and s’more kits are on the menu for dinner and everyone is encouraged to bring sleeping bags and camping gear, as well as snacks and treats to make their sleepover as memorable as possible.”

Participants will be able to choose a special fur baby they feel a connection with, or they will be allocated one. The only downside, according to Kruyt, is saying goodbye at 07:00.

Tangram Restaurant wins global award D

urbanville Hills’s Tangram Restaurant has been given no less than three awards at the annual Haute Grandeur Global Restaurant Awards.

The restaurant received the Best South African Cuisine on a Global Level, Best Restaurant Manager in South Africa and Best Gourmet Cuisine in Africa awards.

The announcement was made at a gala dinner held in Kuala Lumpur recently, where the world’s top hospitality providers gathered to celebrate excellence in the industry.

Some of South Africa’s most awarded restaurants competed in the various categories, including La Colombe, Myoga, Jardine, Hartford Koi, Test Kitchen and the Pot Luck Club.

The Haute Grandeur Global Restaurant Awards acknowledges hospitality experiences across seven continents and more than

60 countries.

The award winners were chosen by means of a rigorous rating process, based on a unique concept exclusive to Haute Grandeur, which relies on the feedback from guests rather than a general public vote or judging.

An ecstatic Dirk Steyn, awarded best restaurant manager in South Africa, says that it’s an enormous honour to be globally recognised.

“The hospitality industry is competitive and consumers demand consistent quality, exceptional service and unique experiences that entice them to return.

Red-hot action excites fans R

ed-hot action filled the track at the Killarney International Speedway at the weekend with the final and deciding round of the World Rallycross (World RX) championship.

In the end, Sweden’s Timmy Hansen was crowned as champion on account of a count-

back of wins over Norway’s Andreas Bakkerud.

Timmy (Peugeot) arrived in Cape Town just a single world championship point clear of title rival Bakkerud (Audi) and younger Hansen brother and teammate Kevin another five points back in third.

After the qualifying rounds and semi-finals, Timmy’s championship lead was only two points, with just the final left to race and eight points on the table.

Timmy started the final from pole position from Bakkerud, Grönholm, Kevin, Timur Timerzianov and Timo Scheider as the top six lined up two-by-two to decide the world championship over six scintillating laps in sweltering heat to the backdrop of Table

Bakkerud made a perfect start to lead from a combative Timmy, but the three world championship contenders became embroiled in a controversial incident, when Timmy made a move on Bakkerud and the two tangled and went off as Kevin also went off in avoidance at the bottom hairpin.

The upshot was that Grönholm led the way from the recovered Bakkerud, Timerzianov and the similarly recovered Timmy, who had made quick work of a struggling Scheider to take a vital fourth place.

Kevin then had a second spectacular incident at the same corner where he, his brother and Bakkerud had collided on the opening lap, as Grönholm led a disgruntled Bakkerud, Timerzianov and a limping Kevin home after Scheider ground to a halt.

“I am super happy for the sport – the last race with everything on the line was nerve-

wrecking, but I kept focusing and delivered a strong performance race by race through the weekend — there was no room for error — not the smallest mistake,” says Timmy.

“This season is the best in my career with four race wins and now the title — it’s a dream come true and I am so happy for the team — we are first and third in the drivers title with Kevin and me and we are makers champions too — the car has been brilliant every race. I still can’t yet take it in!”

South African motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe was also in attendance: “It is wonderful having a world championship in South Africa in motorsport. I think it is the most exciting form of motorsport anyway, because there are so many good drivers,” he said, adding that he wished World RX was around during his competitive racing days, and implored locals to keep supporting the event in the future.

Die jaarlikse bootwedren het vanjaar weer vir hope aksie gesorg nadat die afgelope twee jaar nie kon plaasvind nie weens droogtebeperkings en kampterreine wat nie die spanne kon akkommodeer nie. Vanjaar se wedren het van 1 tot 3 November tussen Velddrif and Melkbosstrand oor ’n afstand van 362 km plaasgevind. Op dag een het die spanne 144 km gery – vanaf Velddrif na Dwarskersbos en Elandsbaai, teruggedraai en weer by Dwarskersbos aangedoen en dan terug na Velddrif. Op die tweede dag is 146 km van Velddrif na Mykonos Langebaan en Yzerfontein afgelê en op die derde dag moes hulle moeilike seetoestande vanaf Yzerfontein na Melkbosstrand trotseer.
