INCIDENT NEAR DOG PARK: RESIDENTS FEEL UNSAFE

othasig police attended a scene last week where a man was found suffering with stab wounds. He was stabbed while trying to cross the N7 highway. Bothasig

police spokesperson, WO Jacques Mostert, confirmed the attack which occurred on Wednesday February 5. “When police members arrived at the scene they found an injured man in his early thirties from Dunoon who had been stabbed. According to him he was chased by perpetrators who tried to rob

him while crossing the N7 on his way to work,” Mostert says. The police called for medics to assist the victim, while waiting for the ambulance, Mostert says. “By the time the ambulance arrived the victim had been stabilised. He indicated that he would consider opening an assault case after receiving

medical treatment,” says Mostert. The area where the attack occurred is close to the Adam Tas dog park in Bothasig. Residents claimed on social media that this was the site where the attack occurred, but this is denied by ward councillor, Helen Carstens.

he current firearm amnesty period is two months underway and residents still have until 31 May to hand in any unwanted or illegal firearms and ammunition they wish to surrender at their nearest police station for destruction.

After this period, minister of police, Bheki Cele, in January warned that persons found in possession of unlicensed firearms will face the full might of the law.

Unwanted firearms Unwanted firearms consist of any weapons, part of a weapon or ammunition that are unsafe or are lawfully in someone’s possession, who no longer needs or requires the weapon. “That would also in-

clude weapons, parts of a weapon or ammunition that are in a poor state or inherited by someone who is no longer interested in keeping it,” explains police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous.

Illegal firearm An illegal firearm is any firearm, part of a firearm or ammunition, which is not licensed and possessed in accordance with the Firearms Control Act. This includes a firearm, part of a firearm or ammunition, that is not registered to the current owner, does not have a serial number or has a defaced or removed serial number. “If a firearm, (unwanted or illegal) is handed in during this time for the purpose of destruction there will be no compensation,” she says.

Illegal or unwanted firearms may not be sold.

Transfer of weapon not allowed Crous explains that you can’t hand in any firearm in terms of the amnesty period for someone else to apply for a license for that same firearm.

“If, however, your license has expired, you can hand it in during the amnesty period and then apply for a new license, without being prosecuted.”

The weapon will be kept safe by police until such time as the new license is granted.

Crous suggests that gunowners contact the firearm officer at their local police station, who will provide them with more information and assistance and the relevant forms.

Residents who wish to obtain more information in this regard are invited to contact the designated firearm/amnesty officer at their local police station.

Tons of rubbish collected from beach: Learners from Edgemead High School recently participated in a Big Schools Beach Clean-up with Save a Fishie, a non-profit organisation (NPO), at the Milnerton Lagoon Beach. The clean-up was held on Saturday 1 February. Zoë Prinsloo, founder of the NPO and president of the school’s Interact Club, organised the cleanup as part of a month-long schools project.

“When I arrived at the lagoon, I was excited to see that the City of Cape Town had recently done a big clean-up and that the lagoon was looking better than it has in a long time. Yet, despite that we still managed to collect a staggering 17 bags of litter off the beach. I am so grateful for everyone that came out to help,” the 17-year-old says. Zoë runs regular clean-ups at the lagoon and those wanting to help at the next event can follow her on Facebook via Save a Fishie.

“Nonetheless, the injured man happened to make it to the dog park as he was attempting to look for help on his way to Bothasig,” Carstens explains.

She says the open field on Adam Tas has been problematic for many years, and it was

actually due to this reason that it was chosen to be used as a dog park.

“The fact that the vibracrete wall is continually broken on the N7 side is a problem that is very difficult to address as each time we replace the slabs, they are removed. We have even built a brick wall which was also broken down. We will now be placing a selflocking gate and placing a sign-board stating that it is a dog park and not a thoroughfare and of course that entry is at your own risk,” she says. CPFs get green light On Thursday, the provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, met with the provincial commissioner of police, Lt Gen Yolisa Matakata, and the chair of the provincial CPF board, Francina Lucas, to discuss the continuation of the community policing forum (CPF) electoral annual meetings. It was agreed that the provincial commissioner would withdraw the moratorium currently placed on the CPF electoral meetings.

“The lifting of the moratorium and the continuation of the CPF electoral meetings are subject to the elections being officiated by both a representative from the community safety department and the police station commander.

“Those meetings which take place without the station commander and a department representative will be invalid, impacting on the CPFs’ eligibility to receive funding from the department,” Fritz said in a statement.

NPO aims to uplift youth RICHARD ROBERTS

The two organisations recently agreed to partner in helping youth in the area.

elping Hands, a local non-profit organisation (NPO), plans to run various projects aimed at uplifting the youth.

The projects will be run in partnership with the Bothasig police, the NPO says.

“We have teamed up with the police to work on youth projects in the community.

These projects include acting against bullying, drugs and trying to use role-models to encourage them not to follow a path of crime, but rather to look at sport and education to better their lives,” Steven Taylor, vice-chair of Helping Hands, says.

Taylor recently met with Col Patrick Jacobs, commander at the Bothasig police station, to discuss these plans. He says the organisation will be working closely with the police.

The NPO will visit prisons to show the youth the another side of life, and hopefully encourage them to stay out of prison. They will also plan youth camps, Taylor says.

“So there is a lot that we are planning to do and I am happy to be working with Col Jacobs, and the members at Bothasig police.”

The NPO will start rolling out the projects this month. Some of the other services the NPO provide include a feeding programme, frail and care support, as well as crisis control and trauma support. Helping Hands was founded by Karen Koegelenberg, who dreamed about helping others.

“She trained to be a community nurse and finally realised her dream in March 1999 with the registration of this NPO. “Her is to help the communities of Kleinbosch, Edgemead, Richwood, Bothasig, Burgundy Estate and Summer Greens in both spiritual and material ways, by uniting communities and getting their participation in a self-help programme to improve the living standards of people who are struggling, for whatever reason,” Taylor says.

Edgemead jewellery store robbed RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj A jewellery store in Edgemead was robbed early on Friday 7 February.

According to information shared by the Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch (ENW), the incident occurred around 10:15 at the Edgemead Village Centre.

Matthew Canning, vice-chair of the neighbourhood watch, confirmed that a group of men robbed the store, while one person was waiting in the get-away vehicle.

Ingrid Nel, centre spokesperson, confirmed the attack, saying that they are thankful that no one was hurt.

“We are incredibly distressed by this incident and are in the process of investigating it fully. We do not wish to comment on the incident until we have the fullest possible picture of what had happened.

“Incidents of this nature are occurring across the city. It is sadly not an isolated incident. As a management company we have been in conversation with both the police and security consultants in an attempt to work out how best to deal with the wave of crime that is being experienced, and its effect on centres such as the Edgemead Village Centre,” Nel says.

She says they regard the robbery as very serious. According to ENW all resources were on scene within minutes and the Bothasig police and their detectives have conducted a thorough investigation.

“Because of the quick thinking members of the public, a vehicle have been identified and this information has been sent out to all the security channels available, including all police special task team members on the road, to be on the lookout,” ENW says. Nel says that they are very concerned that patrons and staff had been affected by the incident, and ask anyone who feels they would need a session with a trauma counsellor to contact their offices on 021 424 1210 or by emailing retail@daleglen.co.za.

ew know that there were many early Christian martyrs called Valentine.

The most famous of them during the time of Roman emperor Claudius II was executed for conducting weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry, and also because he happened to minister to Christians in Rome, which was a Pagan religious city at the time.

Before his execution on 14 February in AD 496, Saint Valentine

performed a miracle by restoring the sight of his jailer’s blind daughter, Julia, and then endearingly wrote a farewell letter to her signed: “Your Valentine.”

In order to remind the soldiers who converted to Christianity and God’s love, Saint Valentine gave them hearts, which he apparently cut from parchment, and so that’s why the heart has featured ever since. But what has the love we associate today with Val-

entine’s Day got to do with it all? Firstly, Saint Valentine wore a purple amethyst finger ring with the image of Cupid carved on it (Cupid being the god of love, or in ancient Greece, Eros). Secondly the amethyst became the birthstone of February – a stone which attracts love. And so this Valentine’s weekend, be sure to wear some piece of apparel in the colour of the amethyst, and maybe add an emblem of a red heart to

it, to show your love for your spouse, current lover, or one you still hope to meet. Treat your loved one to a pink prawn picnic While many happy couples will be exploring restaurants and other romantic spots to mark Valentine’s Day, there are some who prefer to avoid the bustle and do something special at home.

Keshan Rambarun, executive chef at The Table Bay, shares an easy to follow Braai’d Lemongrass Tiger Prawns recipe with dipping sauces that oozes romance.

“This is a recipe I have prepared many times and it never gets old. Go out to your garden or venture to the beach or a quiet picnic spot. Do most of the preparation at home. The prawns can be pre-marinated and dipping sauces prepared beforehand.

Garlic bread and salad are optional, but a glass of good wine or champagne is a must,” he says.

Recipe | Braai’d Lemongrass Tiger Prawns You will need 1kg Tiger prawns, deveined and butterflied.

For the marinade . 6 Lemon grass spears . Lemon olive oil . 2 garlic cloves . 30ml siracha sauce . 20g fresh coriander

Mix the ingredients together and pre-marinate the prawns.

Grill prawns over hot coals until the shells turn pink.

For each of the following dipping sauces, simply mix the ingredients together and serve with the prawns.

Revamp for these classrooms

S

everal classrooms at Monte Vista Primary School recently underwent a revamp – each one decorated according to a specific theme, the school says.

Jenna Brand, school spokesperson, says many teachers revamped their classrooms during the December school holidays.

The teachers used various themes and as a result there is now a pineapple, popsicle, colours and even a space class.

Monte Vista Primary School’s motto is “Be the difference.”

“Being the difference and going the extra mile is something that Monte Vista primary takes seriously. Many of the educators gave up their December holidays to revamp and decorate their classrooms. The learners are excited about their classes and their excitement towards education and learning is going from strength to strength,” Brand says.

Charles, die eerste wenner van TygerBurger se gewilde Karaoke soos ’n Ster-kompetisie, se heel eerste enkelsnit, “Gone”, word Vrydag bekend gestel.

Die enkelsnit is ’n uitvloeisel van haar oorwinning in Karaoke soos ’n Ster.

“As deel van my pryse toe ek Karaoke soos ’n Ster gewen het, kon ek by TygerBurger se GrandJol optree. Die bekende sangeres Amy Jones was saam met my op die verhoog en haar bestuurder het agterna gesê hy dink ek kan ver kom in die musiekbedryf. Daarna

het dinge vinnig gebeur en ons het ’n vergadering met die mense by die musiekvervaardigers by Soul City gehou,” sê Charles.

Die lied, “Gone”, handel oor ontsnapping uit toksiese verhoudings.

“In my geskiedenis was daar verhoudings wat nie net toksies was nie, maar vernietigend. Vernietigend vir liggaam en siel en ek dink hierdie lied is ’n ontsnapping uit hierdie verhoudings. Ek hoop regtig jongmense wat in sulke verhoudings vasgevang is kan hierdie lied gebruik om hulle te inspireer om meer in hulself te glo,” sê Charles.

Volgens haar het die proses om die lied op te neem haar ook nuwe dinge geleer.

“Ek besef nou waarop ek uitgemis het.

Daar is soveel positiewe goed daarbuite wat ’n mens mis as jy nie op jou doelwitte gefokus is nie. Ek is egter vreeslik opgewonde oor Vrydag,” sê sy.

Charles gaan ook vir die eerste keer “Gone” op die verhoog sing by vanjaar se Karaoke soos ’n Ster-eindstryd in die Kraaifontein-stadsaal. Kaartjies vir die eindronde is op die Webtickets-webtuiste beskikbaar.

Petrolprys pla ons nie juis in Suid-Afrika Die petrolprys pla Suid-Afrikaners nie juis nie. En die regering weet dit.

Ons kan darem nog petrol kry, enige tyd van die dag of nag, in enige volume en byna op enige plek.

Dieselfde kan ongelukkig nie van elektrisiteit gesê word nie.

In Suid-Afrika is ons om verskeie redes aan ons voertuie verknog. Dis enersyds ’n statussimbool en andersyds ’n noodsaaklikheid. Maar as iemand in ’n fô-baai-fô voor jou by die pompe staan en sy twee tenks volmaak, sien jy dit draai sommer maklik by R2 000 op ’n slag.

Selfs al maak die regering oornag die petrolprys R30 per liter, sal ons waarskynlik steeds, en net soveel, met ons motors ry. Dit weet die regering ook, so hy laai die petrolprys na hartelus met allerhande belastings, en Jan Publiek betaal maar.

Dit was nog altyd die staat se ou melkkoei. En sy is net nóóit droog nie.

Mense sou lankal en masse met motorfietse en 125cc-scooters gery het as die petrolprys hulle gepla het. In die Ooste, in lande soos Viëtnam, China en Japan, is dit die norm. Ma, pa, twee kinders en die hond ry op ’n scooter.

Daar is tonnels, brûe, bane en parkeergarages by die mall nét vir scooters. Motors is uitsonderlik, want daar is nie plek nie.

Maar al ry mense daar vier op ’n motorfiets, swem hulle nie in die see nie, “because its dangerous”.

Ek wil nou nie ’n donderpadda wees nie, maar nou die dag staan ek by Checkers en ’n tante kom in een van daai fô-baai-fô’s aangery.

Sy kry ’n parkeerplek, maar dis baie nou. Hoe nou gemaak? Vorentoe en agtertoe, vorentoe en agtertoe en weer vorentoe, so ja. En agter haar dam die verkeer op. Nou wag ons maar.

En dis toe ek voel ek moet iets sê. Toe sy uitklim, sê ek “mevrou, sê bietjie vir jou man hy moet vir jou ’n klein karretjie koop”. “Ja,” seg sy, “ek hét al vir hom gesê”.

Nou watter man wil dan sy vrou met ’n fô-baai-fô straf? Of moet sy daarmee ry net vir die curb hopping wanneer sy Saterdae vir Jangotliebantonius by die skolesport gaan aflaai? Daar is mos gewoonlik nie parkeerplek nie, behalwe op die sypaadjie.

Of dalk wíl mevrou met ’n V8-Humvee in die dorp ry, want ewe skielik is sy baie groter as al die ander voertuie en kan sy lekker op hulle afkyk – en op hulle neersien. En die petrol? Ag nee wat, manlief se platinum-kredietkaart betaal mos, geen probleem dáár nie.

Daardie selfde tante kon op dieselfde plekke kom met ’n klein stadsmotor wat ’n kwart van die petrol van ’n Hummer gebruik. Dis eintlik kotsmislik, dié conspicuous consumption, want dis presies wat dit is. Dit skreeu dit eintlik uit: Kyk hoeveel kan ék tog mors!

Miskien kan iemand in my tweede lewe vir my verduidelik wat die rasionaal daaragter is om met ’n reusevoertuig, wat vir die berge en modder bedoel is, op teerstrate te ry. Of dalk is dit ’n omen van wat op ons wag: strate vol gate dat dit soos die Grand Canyon lyk?

In daai geval sou ek nie eens ’n Hummer wou hê nie, ook nie ’n Land Rover-, Mahindra- of Haval-4 x 4 óf ’n scooter nie, nee wat. Dán wil ek een van daai nuwe drones met ’n tweesitplek-kajuit en aircon hê. Hy sit nie in verkeer vas nie, slurp nie petrol of diesel op nie en is boonop veiliger.

Do away with these plastics With the Western world intent on reducing single-use plastics, it is noticeable that fresh milk is still sold here mainly in plastic bottles and bags.

I recycle way more milk bottles than any other plastic, which shows how prevalent they are.

Surely other containers such as Tetra pak cartons and glass should be encouraged. Even aluminium cans can be tried as they are doing in the wine industry, and they are not more expensive per millilitre than a bottle.

Millennials expect big businesses to be more environmentally conscious and therefore some packaging may initially be more expensive, but the law of averages will apply and the costs will come down.

Logically the focus should be on preserving the environment, not maximising profit.

Single-use plastic containers should be priced much higher than the alternatives, thereby reducing the demand and ultimately phasing them out.

Hoekom hier kaartjies uitskryf?

Ek moes onlangs die Louis Leipoldt-hospitaal besoek.

Dit was ’n absolute nagmerrie om parkering te kry en ek het letterlik 30 minute lank op en af gery in elke straat rondom die hospitaal.

Ek kan verstaan dat sekere motoriste uit desperaatheid later parkeer waar hulle ook al ’n gaatjie kry.

Wat ek wel kon sien, is dat niemand iemand vas parkeer

het nie of ’n onderneming se parkering “gesteel” het nie.

Wat my egter so vies maak, is dat daar wragtig ’n verkeerskonstabel rondloop en kaartjies uitskryf vir elke motor wat nie in ’n parkeerplek geparkeer is nie.

Ek is ’n wetsgehoorsame burger, maar ek sou regtig anderpad kyk in hierdie situasie.

Die mense kom hospitaal toe om ’n goeie rede. En hier is geen parkering nie.

Ek hoop hy is trots op die feit dat hy dalk ’n kaartjie vir iemand uitgeskryf het wat iemand daardie dag aan die dood afgestaan het.

Ek voorspel ’n briljante toekoms vir Nielen in die joernalistiek.

Lesers sal dalk verbaas wees oor die talent en vernuf wat in die Tygerberg se private tuisbedrywe vir musiek te vinde is. Daar is byvoorbeeld ’n pa-en-seunspan, Foster en Luwig van der Merwe van De Tyger, wat wêreldklas- akoestiese kitare bou – soms op bestelling van internasionale en plaaslike supersterre. En daar is Hennie van Wyk van Rosendal, wat op bestelling meester-

like banjo’s in sy tuiswerkkamer bou. En dit is nou net enkeles op die musiekfront.

Alle voorspoed word Nielen toegewens. Ek hoop sy word eendag redakteur van ’n topgehalte musiektydskrif – iets wat nog altyd heeltemal afwesig in die Suid-Afrikaanse publikasiemark was en is.

These bikers should be reported Most people complain about the lawlessness of the minibus taxi drivers, but the motorcyclists are worse.

They blatantly disobey the rules of the road by speeding and threading their way between cars and ignoring the noise pollution legislation as the standard exhaust systems (that the motorcycle manufacturers spend millions on getting as quiet and efficient as possible) are replaced by noisy systems. What they do not take into consideration is that they have full-face helmets on and the exhaust outlet is behind them, so the noise that they hear is behind them. Not so for the people around them who have to put up with the irritating noise.

I reside in Sonkring and we have to put up with a number of these irresponsible people racing during the night starting from 23:00 to sometimes 04:00 in the morning.

Naturally, no traffic officers are visible to stop this practice, or check the decibel levels of the exhausts, although they have speed cameras on these roads.

Please report them to the authorities if you see them speeding. All motorcyclists should carry an organ donor card as they will become one sooner or later if they drive in the manner that they do.

‘Hobo’ has a suggestion I agree with C Liebenberg that handing out money at traffic lights isn’t solving the beggar’s problem. About 70% of them end up as substance abusers because they aren’t interested in uplifting themselves.

The other 30%, like myself, get to uplift ourselves and get temporary help at shelters only for six months. We are not seen as someone that really needs urgent help and support from their social workers or groups. We are not seen as substance abuse addicts, only as “homeless” with or without a job.

I “fell down” after a divorce at 52-years-old and found it difficult to find a place to stay as it’s extremely expensive.

For instance, to move into a place of R2 500 per month works out R7 500 (R2 500 times three is R7 500).

Can’t big companies, organisations, shopping groups etcetera “invest” in hostels as property investments?

A big building with 20 rooms, each room with four double bunk beds and a locker per bed gives you an income of R120 000 (R1 500 per bed). Ablutions and showers etcetera can be shared.

KILLARNEY: FIRST EVENT OF THE YEAR ATTRACTS THOUSANDS

housands of spectators at the 19th annual Passion for Speed by G-Energy on Saturday 8 February at Killarney International Raceway were treated to a day of superb racing, dramatic finishes and incomparable automotive history, some of it by cars that, had they been human, would have been classed as pensioners.

The true aristocrats among them were the Historic Grand Prix Cars, original Formula 1 racers from the golden era before the advent of the all-conquering three-litre Cosworth Ford DFV V8.

For most of the spectators, however, the main attraction was the thundering V8 Legends of the 9 Hours and Sports and GT Cars.

In an eight-lap prologue to the headline 45-minute SA TT endurance race Swedish visitor Kennet Persson (Ford GT40) romped to a nine-second win over Jonathan du Toit from Gauteng (Shelby Daytona Coupe) with Janne Kling third in another Swedish GT40.

Persson went on to dominate the main event, completing 31 laps in 45 minutes.

He ran second to the Lola T212 of Bernt Andersson and Michael Kernick in the early stages, dropped to as low as fourth in the

middle part of the race as Colin Ellison from Gauteng held a tenuous lead, before charging to the front on lap 25 and walking away to win by almost a lap from Ellison and Herman von Putten.

The Legends of the 9-Hour ran together with the Regional BeJo Trustees Fine Cars, producing an impressive field of 29 cars and two hugely entertaining races.

As usual, the motorcycle categories delivered the closest racing of the day. Pole-sitter Dylan Croudace led the first two laps of the opening RST Trac Mac Clubmans race on his Ducati Panigale, until he was blitzed

by Willem Binedell’s Dog Box ZX-10R on lap three as Croudace chased the Kawasaki rider all the way to the line, taking the flag just 0.806sec in arrears.

The closest finishes of the day, however, came in the first RST Trac Mac Powersport race, where Gauteng import Dominic Penny and Trevor Westman on the Monza Group Ninja 650 swapped the lead on almost every lap – but it was Penny who was ahead by less than a quarter of a second when it counted, with Keenan Sharp and Edward Rolstone fourth and fifth respectively, 0.071 seconds apart.

Cycle Tour a great success A total of 3 077 cyclists made their way to Durbanville on Saturday for the 22nd Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour.

The event is the third largest cycle race in the Western Cape and is organised and hosted by El Shaddai Christian School in Durbanville.

Craig Boyes won the 103 km men’s event with a time of 2:29:34. Tyrone Filander won the coveted King of the Mountain prize. Trihas Tesfay won the ladies 103 km with a time of 2:41:25.

“Conditions were ideal on race day, starting off with cool temperatures and little wind. A fantastic race was enjoyed by all and riders enjoyed the new routes,” says Therese Videler, marketing head of 99er Cycle Tour.

The main lucky draw prize giving at this year’s Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour had R100 000 worth of great prizes up for grabs, which included two Cannondale bicycles from D’Ville Cyclery in Giant

Durbanville.

“Saturday saw the 99er host another successful and indeed our 22nd cycle race,” says Morne Vorster, chair of the race organising committee.

“With our race being a seeding event for the 2020 Cape Town Cycle Tour, we saw over 3 000 cyclists take on a new route and the feedback we have received so far is overwhelmingly positive. We want to thank all the cyclists who participated, as well as all our volunteers and sponsors who made the day possible.

“A special thanks to all the residents from Durbanville for their patience and support of this great event,” he says.

Vorster also thanked Denver Faroo, Quinton Nel and the team at the City of Cape Town’s Langeberg depot for all the work they did on Van Schoorsdrif, Vissershok, Tygerberg Valley, Contermanskloof, as well as the route through Durbanville town.
