Misdadigers wat vanjaar uit Bellville en Parow verjaag word, sal heel waarskynlik hul heenkome in Brackenfell kom vind. Die voorgenome stadsverbeteringsdistrik (SVD) rondom Voortrekkerstraat, sal waarskynlik al daardie probleme hierheen bring, tensy aksie geneem word. Om dié rede is ’n SVD vir Brackenfell se sakekern voorgestel as ’n saak van dringendheid by verlede Dinsdag se gemeenskapspolisieringforum se jaarvergadering.

Volgens die voorsitter, Leon Brynard, is daar reeds 16 SVD’s in die Skiereiland wat baie suksesvol is. “Die grootste van dié suksesverhale is die Stad Kaapstad se sentrale sakegebied, wat eers vervalle was en vandag ’n sprekende voorbeeld is van wat met ’n SVD bereik kan word,” het hy gesê. Volgens Brynard moet Brackenfell spoedig daaraan dink om ook ’n SVD te implementeer. “Wanneer daar in Julie vanjaar begin word met die totstandkoming van die SVD in Bellville en Parow se sakekern, bestaan die moontlikheid dat die kriminele bedrywighede soos dwelmhandel

Niks kon Tokkie Barkhuizen voorberei vir dit wat sy sou beleef toe sy ’n jaar gelede onverwags in ’n wêreld van duisternis gedompel is nie. Toe gee die see haar ’n geskenk. Tokkie van Proteahoogte was net 43 toe haar optiese senuwees gebars en sy heeltemal blind geword het. Tokkie ly aan Lyme-siekte wat sy 20 jaar gelede opgedoen het met ’n bosluisbyt wat nooit korrek gediagnoseer is nie. Ná ’n reeks beroertes en toe hartprobleme, was sy eers verlam. Die siekte, wat nooit behandel is nie, is eers verlede jaar by Tokkie gediagnoseer nadat haar optiese senuwees gebars het. Ten spyte van haar gestremdheid is Tokkie ’n stralende vrou met ’n aansteeklike glimlag en ’n positie-

Hier moes ek van voor

af leer om alles te doen, van koffie maak tot naaldwerk doen,” sê sy. Kort voor lank het Tokkie se ander sintuie sterker begin word en het sy haar in skulpkuns begin uitleef. “Kort nadat ek blind geword het, het ek op die strand in Gansbaai gaan sit om vrede te kry. Daar langs die see het ek weer my voete gevind. Die skulpies wat ek oral om my gevoel het, was geskenke wat die see vir my gegee het en ek het dit gretig begin bymekaar maak,” vertel sy. Daarna het haar verbeelding oorgeneem en die skulpies het die vorm van skulpmensies en sommer hele skulpfamilies

aangeneem. “Dié kuns het vir my ’n passie geword en hou my na aan die werklikheid.” As ’n mens na die delikate skulpmensies kyk, is dit moeilik om te glo dat ’n blinde persoon dit kan maak. Maar sien is glo, en die skulpmensies hou ’n besondere bekoring in. “Soos enige kunstenaar wil ek my kuns se mooiheid aan ander mense wys,”sê Tokkie wat daaraan dink om dit te bemark. Volgens Heidi Volkwijn, koördineerder van die VBB wat in Grassy Park geleë is, is daar sowat 850 000

blindes in Suid-Afrika, en weet talle gesiggestremdes nie van die werk wat die VBB doen nie. “Ons het ’n holistiese benadering om die blinde individu by te staan, met maatskaplike, sosiale en sielkundige dienste. Verder leer ons ook die blinde om weer onafhanklik te wees, en bied braille-klasse aan in Afrikaans en Engels. Ons leer hulle om vir hulself te kook en bied baie aktiwiteite aan soos mandjievleg en het selfs ’n blinde krieketspan en gimnasium vir blindes.” Die VBB beskik ook oor ’n preprimêre skool. Nog 400 klagtes teen man DESIREÉ RORKE

Nog minstens 400 klagtes van kinderpornografie word tans geformuleer teen ’n man van Brackenfell wat teregstaan op aanklagtes van verkragting en seksuele aanranding van minderjariges. Nadat alle pleitonderhandelinge verlede jaar skipbreuk gely het, het die vermeende kindermolesteerder weer verlede Donderdag in die Bluedowns-streekhof verskyn. Ná die klagstaat telkemale verander en aangepas is, staan die man nou tereg op vier klagtes van verkragting ingevolge die nuwe wetgewing op seksuele misdade, en 11 van seksuele aanranding. Vyf van die meisies, van wie twee sy eie dogters is, is tussen die ouderdom van 9 en 13. Die sesde slagoffer is ’n 16-jarige kinder-

oppasser. Daar is ook pornografiese materiaal van sommige van die kinders, meestal sy eie dogters, op sy rekenaar gevind. Die klagstaat sou aanvanklik net met een klagte met betrekking tot kinderpornografie aangevul word. Maar volgens ’n TygerBurger-bron het die openbare vervolger egter verlede Woensdag beslis dat daar aparte klagtes vir elk van die ongeveer 400 pornografiese foto’s teen hom gemaak moet word. Die staatsaanklaer is hiervan in kennis gestel en die saak is dus weer uitgestel tot 8 Februarie, vir ’n moontlike pleit. Die man is op 15 Mei by sy huis in Morgenster in hegtenis geneem nadat een van die slagoffers, ’n vriendin van sy kinders, aan haar ouers vertel het wat met haar gebeur het tydens ’n naweekbesoek aan die beskul-

digde se huis. Soos die ondersoek gevorder het, het ander voorvalle van seksuele aanranding en ook verkragting van die ander slagoffers op die lappe gekom. Daar was aanvanklik 10 aanklagtes teen die beskuldigde. Ingevolge die nuwe wetgewing word verkragting gedefinieër as enige vorm van penetrasie. Borgtog is later geweier en die man het in aanhouding gebly terwyl die ondersoek voortgeduur het. Teen die einde van verlede jaar het die staat egter in pleit-onderhandelings met die beskuldigde getree en volgens TygerBurgerbronne is ’n tronkvonnis van agt jaar bespreek indien hy skuldig sou pleit. Die staatsaanklaer, Hamely Marquard, het egter op 22 Desember verlede jaar aan die hof gesê dat alle aanbiedinge van die tafel gevee is.

Neighbourhood watch restarts DESIREÉ RORKE

The first neighbourhood watch in Brackenfell since the mid 1980s, started operating in Morgenster and St Michaels in January this year, a feat the Brackenfell police have been struggling for years to achieve. Under the leadership of chairman Philip van der Riel and Sector 1 commander, Sgt Isaac Khewu, planning started in November. Official approval was received from the Community Police Forum (CPF) on 14 December and patrols started two weeks ago. According to W/O Erica Crous, spokesperson for the Brackenfell Police Station, neighbourhood watches play a vital role in sector policing. “In fact that is what sector policing is about, a partnership between the community and the police,” she says. “We had a few neighbourhood watches in Brackenfell back in the 1980s, but all of them died a slow death due to a lack of interest from the public,” she adds. But due to the increase in crime in recent years, the need for a strong community policing sector has become necessary. According to Sgt Khewu, crime activity in Sector 1 has increased tremendously over the last two years, with housebreakings and theft of motor vehicles being the most prevalent crime in the area.

“The proximity of the railway line, which serves as an entrance and exit avenue has played a factor in the crime element in this area. Kry só lekker resepte Sosiale netwerke is nie net vir vry nie. Ek geniet dit geweldig om so met ander kosmaats te gesels en resepte uit te ruil. Daar is ’n magdom groepe waar jy kan aansluit en raad vir enige bak- of kosprobleem is binne sekondes byderhand. Ek lees elke dag vol verwondering hoe daar gewoeker word in Suid-Afrikaanse kombuise. Dis ook ’n baie belangrike bron van inligting vir Suid-Afrikaners wat oorsee woon. Somtyds geniet hulle dit om vol heimweë oor melktert te gesels met mense wat weet wat dit is! Hulle hunker na sonskynkos en Karooskaap. Om trooskos uit jou hartland te maak, maak die verlange effe minder. Produkte wat ons as vanselfsprekend aanvaar, soos karringmelk en maaskaas, is onverkrygbaar oorsee en dan word daar na raad en plaasvervangers gesoek om nog steeds daardie lekker Suid-Afrikaanse beskuit of kaaskoek te bak. Uit baie verskillende wêrelddele is almal dit eens: nêrens in die wêreld is daar sulke lekker vrugtejogurt soos in Suid-Afrika nie! Dit maak juis ’n belangrike bestanddeel uit van so baie van ons yskasterte dat baie mense nou hulle eie jogurt oorsee maak en dit dan met pasteivrugtevulsel meng en in resepte gebruik. En so leer ek ook sommer baie! Die lekkerste van alles is dat almal so gulhartig hulle

raad en resepte met mekaar deel. Ek kon nog nooit verstaan hoekom sommige mense suinig is met hulle resepte nie, of as hulle dit wel vir jou gee, laat hulle ’n ietsie uit … mag hulle soufflés almal flop! Hiermee dan een van die baie lekker resepte wat ek by my mededeelsame kosmaats gekry het wat dit met die grootste liefde gedeel het. Nou doen ek dieselfde. MAKLIKE TERT MET KLAPPERBOLAAG 500 ml melk 60 ml motter 4 eiers, geklits 5 ml vanieljegeursel 250 ml suiker 250 ml klapper 125 ml koekmeel 5 ml bakpoeier Knippie sout Metode: Verhit oond tot 180 ºC en smeer of spuit ’n tertbak met kleefwerende middel. Smelt die botter en meng die melk, eiers en vanieljegeursel daarby, meng goed. Meng droë bestanddele en meng melkmengsel geleidelik daarby in. Plaas in tertbak en bak ongeveer 30-40 minute tot goudbruin, uitgepof en gestol. Hierdie tert lyk baie soos ’n melktert met ’n klapper bo-laag en is liplekker. . Biblioteek nou ook elke Saterdag oop Die Brackenfell-biblioteek sal voortaan elke Saterdagoggend oop wees. Triple matric delight for top learners ESMÉ ERASMUS

The days that teachers must try to distinguish among the Agostinelli triplets are finally over now that they have matriculated.

TygerBurger reported 12 years ago about Claudia, Nadia and Gabriella Agostinelli first school day at the Durbanville Preparatory School. They have matriculated with flying colours at the La Rochelle Girls High School in Paarl – all above 80 % and with 16 distinctions between the three of them!

Gabriella has achieved 85,7 % and A symbols in six of her subjects. She is on the waiting list to be selected for medical studies and will be studying a B Sc degree at the University of Stellenbosch this year. She was also taking part in horseriding and played for the school’s second hockey team. “She is passionate about children with autism and regularly worked as a volunteer at the Snap Centre in Vierlanden in Durbanville,” her proud father, Roberto Agostinelli, said. Nadia, who has achieved 80,7 % and five A’s, will studying to be a

teacher this year. She will be studying a B Ed degree, also at the University of Stellenbosch. “She is the soft-hearted one who likes to help people, especially underpriviledge children,” Agostinelli said. Nadia also played netball. Claudia has achieved 82,7 % and also five A’s. She is passionate about music and reading. She will be studying a LLB degree at the University of Stellenbosch. They have a brother, Luca (16), who is attending school at Paarl Boys High School, and a younger sister, Romi (13), who has started at La Rochelle this year.

Brakes on drag race crowds Traffic officials issued a total of 182 fines at an illegal drag racing operation in Bellville over the course of six hours recently. The operation was held on Sunday 22 January, starting at 19:00 and the following fines were issued: 19 vehicles suspended for unroadworthiness; 24 unlicensed drivers; 14 smooth tyres; one inconsiderate driving case; five unlicensed motor vehicles; eight failed to display number plates; one overload; one operating motor vehicle whilst under suspension; three failing to wear safety belts; 106 speed offences on Vanguard Drive between Klipfontein Road and the N2 (highest speed 123km/h in a 60km/h zone). Adrian Long, principal inspector technical services of the Cape Town traffic services department, said they received a tip-off that dragsters were getting together at Modderdam Road at UWC. “The message contained a date, time location, alternative locations and even a contingency plan, should they encounter any law enforcement personnel,” Long said. He said by 22:30 there were about 120 vehicles parked on both sides of Modderdam Road opposite UWC, waiting for the races to start. Officers managed to block in all the vehicles and conducted inspections on them. Officers then moved to Bishop Lavis, where another group of about 25 vehicles was starting to form. This group dispersed before officials arrived and they were unable to intercept them.

Extension for local entrepreneurs GARY VAN DYK

The Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) is on the move to empower local entrepreneurs. While it has just announced that it is extending the deadline for entries for the Small Business Stars business plan competition, its services have helped an Elsies River couple empower themselves to financial stability. Last year Wendy and Oscar Samuels from Elsies River were unemployed with no prospects of jobs in their future. According to business adviser Dalton Randall of Seda service provider Devine Solutions, the couple decided to take personal responsibility in order to remedy their situation.

“Although there were several alternative solutions such as government grants, these entrepreneurs decided to pursue their dream,” he says. “After trusting God and starting small they have now managed to sustain themselves over the last year with a mobile takeaway stand that operates in the area. “Through our guidance they have now received a subsidy from Seda in order to promote the business,” said Dalton. They have created two employment opportunities, doubled their turnover within a period of a month and also managed to give back to the community by supporting a feeding scheme in the area. “This is a remarkable achievement and a reflection that gov-

Liesl Cronje en haar dogter, Lische, het Daisy na die kliniek geneem nadat hulle ’n groot gewas in haar lies gewaar het. Dr. Rozelle Theron sê Daisy is die kleinste pasiënt wat hulle nog ooit gehad het. “Gelukkig is Margaret, my assistent,

baie handig as dit by naaldwerk kom en sy het spesiaal ’n piepklein teaterdoekie vir Daisy gemaak” sê Theron. Met die narkotiseur en assistent op hulle pos, is die gewas ná ’n senutergende vyf minute suksesvol verwyder. Klein Daisy was nog ’n bietjie deurmekaar ná die operasie, maar sy sterk goed aan. “Dit gaan nou baie goed met haar. Sy het al klaar vanoggend uit haar hok ontsnap en sy hardloop die hele wêreld vol,” sê Cronje. “Dit lyk nie eers of sy ’n operasie gehad het nie.”

Reminder to renew licence Many firearm licences issued in terms of the Firearm Controls Act of 2000, will expire during 2012. So says Colonel André Traut, spokesperson of the Western Cape Police, and reminds the public to have their firearm licences renewed. “This process is not automatic, and a licensee will have to submit an application 90 days prior to the expiry date at his or her local police station in terms of the legisla-

tion,” Traut says. “We would also like to encourage firearm owners to make an enquiry at their police station where an application was submitted, for issued licences, as these licences are often left uncollected for many months.” According to Traut, the ownership of a firearm is not only governed by legislation, but is also a huge responsibility and he appeals to firearm owners to take all necessary care.

Metro Police there to serve The Metro Police have been in the news constantly over the past couple of years – some of it bad (when allegations of bribery surfaced or when they brought the N2 to a standstill during a protest), but most of it good. Take this past week for example. Metro Police officers arrested 37 suspects on charges ranging from drug possession to drunk driving. No wonder Cape Town’s executive mayor, Patricia de Lille, said she’d fight tooth and nail for the retention of the country’s metro police. De Lille mentioned at the City of Cape Town’s first council meeting of the year that a draft white paper is proposing that metro and municipal police services be abolished. Her speech caused quite a stir with the minister of police’s spokesperson Zweli Mnisi telling her to “shut up”, saying she shouldn’t speak out of turn. Fact is we need all the help we can get to fight crime in this country. De Lille was quoted as saying the Metro Police have helped keep the people of Cape Town safe. Kudos to her for bringing the matter out in the open; more often than not things are swept under the table. De Lille got it spot on when she said: “ ... we should never allow politics to jeopardise the safety of our citizens.”

Did you know there are great animal lovers in our country who are forced to put down perfectly healthy cats, kittens dogs and puppies every day? Imagine looking into those loyal puppydog eyes and putting an animal to sleep. Just because there is no space. No other reason. Statistics in SA show that if we wanted to save all the animals in our country, every household would have to take in 40 animals! Many of you will now immediately jump to the conclusion that the problem lies in our poor areas, in our squatter camps. Sure, there is a lot of uncontrolled breeding going on, but there are many welfares dedicated to help the townships, like African Tails, Lucky Lucy and PETS, to name a few. They educate the people about proper care for their animals, and the people are more than willing to listen. They sign their animals up to be sterilised and vaccinated. They understand the importance of it, because of the hard work these welfares do. Eventually the townships will be under control. The real problem in my eyes, are the backyard breeders. A backyard breeder is ANYONE who has unsterilised pets in his/her home, that let his/her animals breed, be it purebred or not. The problem lies in the money that can be made by selling a purebred pup. Remember, a purebred and a registered purebred are two different things. Anyone can breed purebred dogs with each other, without knowing what they are doing, but a KUSA registered breeder, for the most part, has researched the breed, and is breeding properly, for the refinement or quality control of a breed, not just throwing two random dogs together! People who breed in their backyards for a quick buck makes me mad. Every animal bred, is a home taken away from a shelter pet who thus dies. MANY shelter pets are purebred. If you want a purebred dog, visit websites like www.furkidz.co.za,

www.barkingmad.co.za or phone around to shelters, see what they have, or buy a properly bred dog from a registered breeder. At least that way your animal will have few health issues, be properly socialised, vet checked, and cared for properly before you take it to its new forever home. Of course, you can also adopt a crossbreed, they are awesome animals and normally very hardy and healthy. If only more people would visit a shelter before buying an animal, more animal lives would be saved. If only more people would wake up and see what they are doing; that their money-making from their pets (even if they only do it once) adds to the thousands of already homeless animals in SA. “We’ll find them all good homes” they say. Really? Phone the people who buy from you a year from now, find out how many are actually still with their original owners. You will be disappointed. We in welfare know, rehoming an animal to a “good home” is not always the case. Many animals get abused by their new owners or end up in shelters, and you will never be the wiser. Of course, there are many of you that will not give a damn and continue breeding ... but, I hope that I have at least inspired “someone” out there to sterilise or to adopt. Anyone can make a difference by just being responsible and sterilising your pets. If everyone stopped breeding in their backyards, and adopted or bought only from KUSA registered breeders, a lot of lives would be saved. Remember, an adoption fee at a shelter normally INCLUDES the sterilisation at six months, what a score! You get to literally save a life, and get free sterilisation! Ek skryf vandag hierdie brief uit dankbaarheid teenoor die dokters en personeel van die vaskulêre saal D1 by die Tygerberg-hospitaal. Dit was met skok dat ek besef het hoe onbaatsigtig en toegewyd hierdie dokters is, en die ongelooflike lang ure wat hulle werk. Soms het ek gewonder of hulle ooit slaap. My suster, mev. Rademeyer, was daar vir vyf weke en die ekstra myl is vir haar geloop deur alles menslik moontlik te doen om haar been te red, ten midde van baie moeilike omstandighede. Die nagte wat hulle opgeoffer het om te veg vir haar lewe het nie by my ongesiens verby gegaan nie. Die oggend toe sy oorlede is, was daar nog steeds geveg vir haar lewe. Dit word uit die diepte van my hart waardeer. Dit was die wil van die Here dat sy moes gaan en ek berus daarby. Aan dr. Pohl en dr. Keyzer ’n baie, baie spesiale dankie, woorde ontbreek my. Globall adventure team kicking it JESSICA BOTES

The vibrant Parish of the Bellville Catholic Church recently played host to a Polish adventure team, Globall 2012. The team of extreme Polish adventurers are on their way to the southern tip of eastern Europe – 23 000km away. They made a turn at the parish to share a special message of tolerance, joy and unity with their creed, “All borders and prejudices that separate people, are manmade and can only be overcome by

man”. The expedition will be recorded in its entirety as they plan to release a film and a book on this incredible experience. The Bellville parish priest, Father Bogdan Buksa welcomed the members of the expedition and said the church was honoured to be part of such a special project. They were treated to a special farewell dinner in the church hall which ended in a jamming session with Buksa, who is also a keen saxophone player. The next morning a special mass was held for the group

and the fleet of 4x4 vehicles were blessed by Buksa. In their bid to unify people, Globall 2012 uses sport as a means of overcoming social barriers. The team plays soccer with the locals wherever they stop. Buksa is also Polish and he came to South African as a missionary priest six years ago. He fell in love with South Africa and has been at the Bellville parish for four years for the Archdiocese of Cape Town. Academics in the genes With their youngest son receiving his fifth degree soon, the Ipser family in Bellville now boasts 13 degrees amongst them. Jonathan, son of Claude Ipser, councillor for Ward 105 in Durbanville and surrounding area, will have his Master’s degree conferred on him next month by Columbia University in New York. Jonathan’s degrees, and the major fields of study respectively, are Bachelor of Social Sciences (B Soc Sci) with Psychology, Anthropology and Archeology, a B Soc Sci. (Hons) in Research Psychology, an MA (cum laude) in Research Psychology and a PhD in Psychiatry, all from the University of Cape Town. His doctoral thesis investigated a link between extreme impulsiveness and unusually poor emotional control in adults, and severe psychological trauma experienced by them at an early age. Next month the degree of Master of Science ie MSc Epidemiology will be conferred on him by Columbia University of New York, USA. Epidemiology is the study of the causes, spread and control of diseases in populations. Jonathan left last Thursday for the University of California’s San Diego campus, where he will undertake post-doctoral research on a bursary for the next 18 months, said his father, Ipser. His research in California will revolve around mental degeneration arising from HIV. Ipser’s eldest son, Adrian, has

He was admitted as an attorney on 2 October 1996. His admission was moved in the High Court in Cape Town by two counsel, being his father, Ipser, assisted by his sister, Melanie. Melanie achieved a BA and LLB degree, while Ipser himself achieved a BA and LLB degree. Ipser’s younger daughter, Catherine, attained a BA degree and was studying her LLB when she died in a car accident in 1998. “Catherine’s declared ambition was to obtain an LLB and then a doctorate in Forensic Psychology. “She was a matric A scholar at Stellenberg High School and all expected her to be the academic achiever, which I am sure she

would have been had she not been killed. “For Jonathan our expectations were to matriculate by the skin of his teeth, if at all!” Ipser said. “Although Jonathan, like his four siblings, was delivered by caesarean section, he was premature, and in his case was extremely slow and did not feature at all whilst at school. “Jonathan surprised us all by his focus and application,” Ipser said. “He is an example of what can be attained through setting goals and persevering in achieving them,” he said. His and his wife, Mary’s fifth child, David, who was born third, died as a result of medical negligence whilst a baby.

Hennie Swart van Panorama sê hy sien nou die dag op ’n bord die park wat deur Michiel Laubscheren Diazstraat begrens word, heet nou Alk van Zyl-park, dit terwyl Alk van Zylstraat twee blokke verder is. Hy het gewonder of die Stad Kaapstad dié park se naam verander het. Hy wil ook weet of nog plekke en strate in Parow se name besig is om te verander. Wat name in Parow betref, is daar nie planne vir baie veranderings nie. Volgens Brett Herron, voorsitter van die naamsveranderingskomitee van die Stad, is nuwe name in hierdie stadium net vir Hendrik Verwoerdrylaan en Modderdamweg (van Manenberg tot by Voortrekkerweg) in die vooruitsig. Oor eersgenoemde was daar reeds ’n proses van openbare deelname in 2007 en is Beyers Naudérylaan as nuwe naam voorgestel. Naudé was ’n Afrikaanse predikant wat openlik teen apartheid gekant was. Dié naam sal nie een van die dae verander nie. “Die Stad Kaapstad sal in Maart en April vanjaar ’n uitgebreide proses van openbare deelname uitvoer oor strate, geboue en openbare areas wat reeds geïdentifiseer is. Inwoners het daarom ’n verdere geleentheid om kommentaar te lewer op die voorgestelde naamsverandering van Hendrik Verwoerd,” het Herron gesê. The worst road in the country There are times to be grateful that we live in the Western Cape. I say this because I have just returned from a holiday in the Eastern Cape and an encounter with what must surely be the worst road in South Africa, a road so bad that the local farmers have taken to driving in the veld alongside the road! The road in question links the little towns of Adelaide and Tarkastad. It used to have a good gravel surface but it has now disintegrated into a rocky ridge with corrugations so deep that no city car can venture onto it without having its bottom scraped. So city cars, too, turn off the road and drive in the veld. All this has prompted the local farmers to consider reverting to horses. Trouble is most of the horses available today are such pampered creatures that they would expect to be taken to town in horse boxes pulled by Land Rovers. When I was in the area the farmers were all watching the Dakar rally on TV in the hope of learning useful new driving techniques. But at the end of it all there was a collective shake of the head and a suggestion that the Dakar drivers should visit Adelaide to learn from them. Just how the road got so bad can be explained in one word – neglect. The local powers that be have very little regard for farmers.

And they understand that farmers don’t have to attend important meetings in Bisho. Farmers should stay on their farms and farm! But things are not going well in the Eastern Cape and many farmers have had to send their wives out to work so they need the roads. To make this possible they use tracks alongside the ruins of the road. Every now and then the track is diverted onto the rocky ruin to avoid a ditch or to cross over to the other side where the veld in the road reserve may be a little flatter. There is no prospect of tarring the road. All the available asphalt is needed to fill the potholes on more important roads. They also use asphalt to create rough strips on roads approaching a stop sign or junction. This has become necessary because standard road signage no longer has the desired effect and it has become necessary to shake up cars and wake the drivers. One solution might be to go back to cement strip roads. But if one is progressing into the past it might be better to go back a little further and try wagons again. Think of all the jobs it would create. One person to lead the oxen, one or two to walk alongside cracking the whips and another seated on the wakis to give the orders. In the Eastern Cape, the future is not what it used to be.

Dié byeenkoms val saam met die skool se 75ste verjaardag. Dié skool visse swem ver Toe die graad agt-leerders onlangs by Hoërskool Stellenberg se hekke instap, het ’n taai week vir hulle voorgelê, maar dit het ook ’n goeie dosis pret en plesier ingesluit. Die tema vir die oriëntasie vir vanjaar was visse – wat in die groot see Stellenberg toe geswem het. Die doel van die oriëntasie was om ’n uiteenlopende graadgroep van verskillende laerskole te verenig. “Hoogtepunte was die waatlemoenfees, deurnag en waterdag,” het ’n groepie graad agts saamgestem. Maandag 16 Januarie het hulle vir oulaas hul graad 8-liedjie vir die matrieks gesing, waarna hulle hul Stellenberg-baadjies aangetrek het. “Jy voel trots om deel te wees van Stellenberg,” was die graad agts dit eens. “Kom ons hoop dié skool visse swem heerlik vir die volgende vyf jaar,” sê Chrisjan Wust, lid van Hoërskool Stellenberg se studenteraad.

Amoré gewild in Kaap LOUISA STEYL

“Ek was 12 jaar oud toe ek vir die eerste keer op die verhoog was,” sê die plaaslike sangeres Amoré Rudman. Amoré het al ver gekom van daardie tyd af. Sy is in 2012 deur Bok Radio aangewys as die Kaap se gewildste kunstenaar vir haar liedjie “Lekker by die see”. Toe Amoré elf jaar oud was, het haar ouma vir haar ’n klawerbord gekoop. Dit was by haar klawerbordlesse dat sy begin sing het en haar onderwyser het haar aangemoedig om aan kompetisies deel te neem. Voor sy haar eie CD, “Kamermuur”, opgeneem het, het Amoré liedjies gesing vir Select-musiek se versamelings. Amoré het ook al saam met Nic Stevens getoer, en sê hy is beslis haar mentor in die Suid-Afrikaanse musiekbedryf. 99ER race time again The Reeds Chevrolet 99ER Cycling Road and MTB race will take place on Saturday 11 February. This popular race is the third largest in the Western Cape and the event is an official seeding race to the Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour for 2013. Last year saw the dawn of a new era for the Ninety Niner Cycle Race with the introduction of two exciting mountain bike routes, adding more variety and action to this already popular event. This year there will be three mountain bike routes: 35km, 20km and 8km, catering for a wide range of participants. The mountain bike event will once again take place at Meerendal Wine Estate.

To win this brand new Chevrolet Spark, cyclists must enter one of the 123km, 50km road races or the 35km mountain bike race. Universiteit Wes-Kaapland, wie se wedstryd teen St. Augustine eers Saterdag begin het, het met sy 213/9 ook op ’n oorwinning afgestuur nadat die tuisspan vir net 108 lopies uitgeknikker is. Dale Campbell (90*), Robbie van der Ross (45 en 5/22) en Ngulu Serame (3/17) het UWK op die wenpad geplaas. Durbanville (266/5, gesl.) het Groenpunt (201) met 118 lopies getroef ná onder meer puik kolfwerk deur Jaco Castle (110*), terwyl Bellville-Suid (181) heeltemal te sterk was vir Bonteheuwel (72 en 60). Thando Mdodana (57), Naeem Gabru (30*), Shahied Peters (4/12 en 3/11) en Marben Plaatjies (3/6) was hul span se wedstrydwenners. Gareth Knott (5/11) het op die Edgemead-veld die span van Kaapstadklub – wat net 38 lopies vir ’n oorwinning benodig het – benoude oomblikke besorg voordat die besoekers met vyf paaltjies die knoop deurgehak het. Ook Tygerberg (118) het lelik op sy baadjie gekry toe Primrose (71/0) hom met 10 paaltjies verslaan het. Noordelikes-Goodwood (128) se nagmerrie-seisoen duur voort ná sy nederlaag met 6 paaltjies teen Strandfontein (102/4) en dieselfde geld vir Kuilsrivier wat net 94 lopies in sy opvolgbeurt teen Milnerton kon aanteken om die tuisspan met ’n beurt en 14 lopies te laat seëvier. Die atlete het behoorlik gesweet tydens die WPA se junior byeenkoms wat Saterdag in Bellville afgehandel is. Die vier groot skole in die Tygerberg het die kans aangegryp om hul spanne te slyp vir die MTBS wat Vrydag plaasvind. Ten spyte van die hitte, was daar talle pragvertonings. I In die naellope was Yusuf Ismail (ITHE) in die 200 m vir seuns o.18 (22.16) en die 100 m (10.96) die groot uitblinker. In die velditems het Angelina Smith (BAK), Annelien Gerstner (DFM) en Christel König (DFM) almal twee titels verower. Anneke Germishuys (TYG, o.16-SG) met 35.64, Tristan van Wyk (WCSS, o.18-VS) met 6,16 en Mia Labuschagne (BAK, o.18-HS) met 1,60 het ook goed gevaar.
