Makro builds green DESIREÉ RORKE
On the corner of Okovango and Tanner roads at CapeGate, a colossal new structure has risen in record time, and will house another new Makro in Cape Town when it opens its doors in the third quarter of the year. But unlike any other Makro store in the country, this “green” building was specifically designed to blend into the environment. Construction started in November last year, and is now in the final phases. “Following the hugely successful opening of the Montague Gardens store last October, which boasted record sales, Makro is introducing
a new urban design store to the northern suburbs of Cape Town,” says Nicole Freeman from Makro SA. According to Freeman this store will be very different from the Makro stores the public knows, with aesthetic changes being made to the building, which will assist the store in blending into its urban surroundings. The store will have a trading area of 16 513m² and 811 parking bays. The mass merchant offers a unique shopping experience to retail, commercial and reseller customers. The business is owned by Massmart, a JSE listed company, which is in turn 51 percent owned by the largest retailer in the world, Walmart.
Makro currently has 16 stores countrywide including two stores in the Western Cape. “The store is being built with the environment in mind, which will reduce the carbon footprint dramatically. Some of the green aspects include abundant natural light to reduce the amount of electricity required, motion sensors in all the offices and storage rooms, which will reduce both consumption and start-up current,” Freeman says. Furthermore, the store will use environmentally friendly air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. The restrooms are going to be fitted with a metered water system for taps and a cistern dual flushing system for toilets, which will assist

in reducing water usage. Also, according to Freeman, building materials are being sourced from around the area, reducing transport requirements. “A horticultural consultant is going to be employed to ensure the plants used on the site are waterwise and eco-friendly. The store will also have a green buffer between the local residents and the store. Makro is looking forward to introducing the new CapeGate store.” A whole new world of shopping awaits customers in the northern suburbs, catering for a wide spectrum of shopping needs.
