Van der Merwe reckons the young woman involved in the latest accident was fortunate not to sustain any serious injuries.

Brackenfell police spokesperson, Captain Erica Crous, confirmed that an accident occurred at around midnight on 19 July.

She says that according to information, the driver of the white Ford Fiesta vehicle was only slightly injured.

or for safety and security, Richard Bosman, says they are aware of the many accidents that have happened at the Brackenfell Boulevard intersection.

“Our records show seven motor vehicle accidents in the last six months at the intersection,” says Bosman.

He says enforcement and speed mitigation measures are of little effect if motorists do not take responsibility for their actions and abide by the law.

“We encourage motorists to always abide by the rules of the road, including sticking to the speed limit and not drinking and driving.”

Motorists are warned to be careful of the dip at the intersection and to always abide by the speed limit to prevent more accidents from occurring.

TygerBurger was unable to reach the driver involved in the most recent accident, or her family, by the time of going to print.

ie vangnet span stywer om ’n plaaslike bouer en ontwikkelaar, Tollie van der Westhuizen.

Van der Westhuizen, ook voorheen ’n bekende rugby-afrigter by die Tygerberg-rugbyklub, staar bedrogklagte in die gesig nadat sy beslote korporasie, Fynbosland, na bewering groot bedrae geld ontvang het by verskeie kopers vir projekte wat nooit realiseer het nie.

Van der Westhuizen het hom verlede Maandag aan die Kraaifontein-polisie oorhandig nadat daar verlede Vrydag ’n lasbrief uitgereik is vir sy inhegtenisneming.

Die lasbrief is deur die Bellville-landdroshof uitgereik nadat Van der Westhuizen versuim het om te verskyn vir ’n ondervraging in die landdroshof met betrekking tot die insolvensie van sy onderneming, Fynbosland. Van der Westhuisen is voorheen gewaarsku om die ondervraging, saam met sy rekenmeester, Jacques de Villers, by te woon. De Villiers het ook nie opgedaag vir die ondervraging nie. Die lasbrief is ook teen Van der Westhuizen uitgereik weens die feit dat hy nie finansiële dokumente oorhandig het nie, waarvoor daar voorheen ’n subpoena op hom beteken is.

De Villiers het glo die land verlaat voordat hy verlede Vrydag by die ondervraging moes verskyn. By navraag het dit geblyk dat Van der Westhuizen met vakansie aan die Weskus was toe hy in die hof moes wees.

Geen ander keuse Landdros J.J. van Reenen het gesê hy het geen ander keuse as om die lasbriewe uit te reik nie. “Dit kan nie geduld word dat mense hulle nie steur aan die waarskuwings van die hof nie. Deur dit te doen, versteur hulle die regsproses,” het Van Reenen gesê.

Van der Westhuizen het sy onderneming Fynbosland in 2016 insolvent verklaar tydens die verloop van ’n siviele saak wat Ja-

mes Vos, parlementslid en DA-woordvoerder oor toerisme, in 2016 teen hom gebring het. In die saak het Vos sy geld van Van der Westhuizen teruggeëis nadat hy nie ’n 2013koopkontrak nagekom het vir ’n plot-enplan-skema in Langeberg Ridge en later in Malmesbury nie.

Vos het die koopkontrak geteken ten einde vir sy bejaarde pa ’n huis te koop.

Vos, wat die gelde vroegtydig oorbetaal het, het maande later besef dat die projek nooit sou realiseer nie toe hy uitvind dat die grond waarop die huise gebou sou word, nie eers aan Van der Westhuizen behoort nie.

“Toe ek hom konfronteer, was hy woedend en het alles ontken. Ek het egter daarop aangedring dat ek my geld terug wil hê, maar hy het my meegedeel dat hy die geld reeds in ’n ander projek belê het,” sê hy.

Volgens Vos is daar tot op hede geen verduideliking deur Van der Westhuizen aangebied oor hoekom hy dié gelde in ’n ander ontwikkeling gebruik het nie.

Van der Westhuizen en sy onderneming was ook nie by die National Homebuilders Registration Council (NHBRC) geregistreer om gelde by Vos te kon ontvang nie.

Volgens Vos se regsverteenwoordiger, Leon van Rensburg, is dit ’n kriminele misdryf om gelde van ’n verbruiker te ontvang vir die bou van ’n huis wanneer sodanige registrasie nie plaasgevind het nie.

Die siviele saak is op 31 Mei 2016 in die Wes-Kaapse hooggeregshof geskik, en die hof het beveel dat die bedrag van R770 000 teen 30 Junie aan Vos terugbetaal word. Van der Westhuizen het vir die hof aangedui die gelde sal teen daardie datum betaal wees.

Nadat Van der Westhuizen versuim het om te betaal, het Van Rensburg opdrag aan die balju gegee om die lasbrief vir eksekusie uit te voer. Van der Westhuizen het egter die balju meegedaal dat Fynbosland in daardie stadium reeds vir drie maande lank dormant was. “Van der Westhuizen het tot nog toe geen woord gerep oor wanneer Vos te-

rugbetaal gaan word, of wanneer daar nakoming van die hofbevel sal wees nie.

“Hy het ook geensins verklaar wat hy met Vos se geld gemaak het nie. Verder het hy die hof ook mislei deur te skik om die geld terug te betaal en dit terwyl die beslote korporasie glo dormant was,” het Van Rensburg ten tye van die verwikkelinge gesê.

Net ’n ‘blote regsgeding’ Volgens Van der Westhuizen se prokureur, Kevin Kiewitz, was die hele aangeleentheid egter net “’n blote regsgeding”.

Volgens hom het verskeie groot uitgawes vir die bouprojek gelei tot vertragings wat uitendelik gelei het tot die kansellasie van die projek. Kiewitz sê Van der Westhuizen en die eienaar van die grond het ’n gesamentlike onderneming begin om die grond in Langeberg Ridge te ontwikkel.

“Die ontwikkeling is registreer as Ridgeview en die NHBRC-registrasie was op die grond eienaar (se onderneming) se naam gedoen. Volgens die voorwaardes van die gesamentlike onderneming sou Van der Westhuizen slegs die projekbestuurder van die ontwikkeling wees,” sê Kiewitz.

Met betrekking tot die ontwikkeling in Malmesbury, sê Kietwitz, dat Vos die ooreenkoms gekanselleer het omdat hy ongeduldig begin raak het. Kiewitz het nie aangedui waarom Van der Westhuizen nie Vos se geld teruggegee het toe die kontrak gekanselleer is nie. Vos het gevolglik ook ’n kriminele saak by die Kraaifontein-polisie aanhangig gemaak. Volgens die ondersoekbeampte, wat ook teenwoordig was by die insolvensie-ondervraging, is daar verskeie verklarings geneem by ander mense wat na bewering ook geld deur Van der Westhuizen se aktiwiteite verloor het.

Die ondersoekbeampte het bevestig dat die saak tans nog ondersoek word. Na vele oproepe kon TygerBurger nie daarin slaag om Van der Westhuizen vir kommentaar in die hande te kry nie.

Complaint against K’River councillor DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

A

complaint was lodged last week against Kuils River ward councillor for ward 11, Desirée Visagie, by an unhappy resident of Kuils River.

JC MacFarlane lodged the complaint with the office of the Speaker of the City of Cape Town, Dirk Smit, wherein MacFarlane alleges that Visagie is not involved in her community.

“The real problem is that she does not attend the development community meetings when invited and I have never, since she took office, received any reply on my emails,” he stated.

Neither does she reply on important service delivery issues, according to MacFarlane.

“One recent such complaint involved illegal squatters in St Dumas, on which even media enquiries were ignored,” he said.

“The people in my community are struggling to get in contact with our councillor and she never attends any meetings. She does not reply to her emails, nor does she try to resolve any problems in the community. We are currently opposing a huge development and it was noted that the councillor was not present at any of the meetings.

When we invite her, she has other duties like finding her missing dog, and also going abroad for her birthday,” he said in a letter to the Department of Local Government in the Western Cape.

MacFarlane feels that Visagie should be removed as ward councillor before the next local elections. Dirk Smit confirmed on Friday that his office had received the complaint and the matter is being attended to.

Locally, the Municipal Systems Act pre-

scribes the code of conduct for all councillors. According to this legislation (information provided by the Department of Local Government) any allegations against a councillor may be reported to the Speaker of Council, to determine whether a provision of the code has been breached.

The Speaker can then authorise an investigation of the facts and circumstances of the alleged breach and give the councillor a reasonable opportunity to reply in writing to the allegations. A public report in this regard should be submitted to the municipal council and be made available to the MEC for Local Government.

In practice, this investigation entails a disciplinary hearing, and if found guilty of breaching the code, a councillor may be reprimanded, given a warning or fine, be suspended for a certain period, or even be removed from office.

Visagie on Friday defended herself on the allegations. According to her, she had valid reasons for not attending the aforesaid meetings and had informed the Chief Whip of these reasons, including when she had to go look for her missing dog.

Her overseas trip, she says, was a longstanding tour that had been planned months in advance. “Also, in my absence for the second meeting I arranged for the subcouncil chair to be there. As the councillor I cannot just stop any development and it doesn’t mean I don’t have the community’s interests at heart,” she told TygerBurger.

“There are several other issues that the community addresses with me on a regular basis, which I attend to and try to resolve,” she said.

Obscure objects: These structures alongside Amandel Road in Kuils River have caught

the eye of residents and commuters. The six steel frames with tyres were erected two weeks ago and have left residents scratching their heads about their intended purpose. By the time of going to print, the City of Cape Town was unable to confirm who erected the structures or what their purpose will be.

raffic on Old Paarl Road in Brackenfell came to a standstill early on Thursday morning when a pedestrian was hit by an armoured cash-in-transit van.

The 55-year-old woman was crossing the road on the corner of William Dabs Road at about 06:30 when she was hit by the oncoming vehicle.

According to information received from various sources and confirmed by the police, the vehicle was travelling over the green light in the direction of Bellville when the woman walked in front of it.

Brackenfell police confirmed that her injuries were not serious and that she was taken to hospital by ambulance for observation.

“An accident report was completed,” said

police spokesperson, Captain Erica Crous.

In another incident also on Thursday morning, a 22-year-old man was left seriously injured when he reportedly fell between two carriages of a moving train at Brackenfell Railway Station.

ER24 paramedics, along with Metro and Fire and Rescue Services, arrived on the scene at approximately 08:30.

“Paramedics found the man lying on the platform surrounded by several members of the community.

“Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained several injuries and was in a serious condition. Paramedics treated the man and provided him with advanced life support interventions before he was transported to Tygerberg Hospital for further care,” said ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

Bright day for Bright Stars DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

Bright Stars Safe Home is a communitybased non-profit organisation in Kraaifontein looking after 26 children – including a newborn baby – from the poorer local communities, whose welfare or safety have been compromised.

On Mandela Day last week, management staff from CapeGate Shopping Centre did their bit to spread the Madiba joy, when they offered up 67 minutes of their time at the home.

The children were spoiled with a scrumptious lunch, while crucial items were donated to the home.

Although the Department of Housing provides the house to accommodate the children, the NPO receives limited resources from the Department of Social Services.

Social grants also do not cover the monthly expenses.

“We were delighted to be able to spend Mandela Day with the kids and founders, Pierre and Brenda, and are in awe of the wonderful work they do every day. We thank our wonderful tenants and customers for donating various items that Bright Stars so desperately needed,” said Nadine le Roux from the CapeGate marketing team.

Donations included blankets, fruit, clothing, toiletries, nappies and the lunch.

wo young Brackenfell songstresses wowed judges at the Talent America national finals held in New York City over the school holidays.

Danielle van Niekerk (18) and Danielle Psomas (19) both qualified for the finals earlier this year at the local Talent Africa competition.

The two Danielles, both from Riana van Wyk School of Music in Brackenfell, joined a South African team of 42 performers from across the country to take part in the prestigious competition.

Van Niekerk walked away with four first places for pop, rock, country duet and R&B duet, as well as two third places for country and jazz, and she was also named the overall age group winner and vocal divisional winner.

Likewise, Psomas took three first places for country duet, R&B duet and musical/ Broadway; two second places for pop duet and R&B, and two third places for gospel and pop.

Judges included some of the most influential powerhouses in the industry, say organisers. Moreover, there was an incredible line-up of classes and workshops after the competition – a dance class with a television celebrity and Broadway star, and a vocal class with teacher to the stars, Bob Marks.

Both girls were elated at their achievements. “It was a fantastic experience and a dream come true,” says Van Niekerk, who plans to go into the entertainment industry full time next year, after completing her school career.

Psomas, a vocal teacher in Brackenfell, could not be reached for comment.

Man kry 8 jaar oor pornografie

Man van Durbanville wat tien jaar lank pornografiese foto’s en video’s van sy eie kinders en sy bure se kinders geneem het, is tot effektief agt jaar tronkstraf gevonnis in ’n appèlsaak wat in die Kaapstadse hooggeregshof aangehoor is.

Dit het gekom nadat die man (39), wie se naam weerhou word om sy eie kinders se identiteit te beskerm, aanvanklik bykans ongeskonde daarvan afgekom het.

Hy is op 24 Mei 2015 in die streekhof in Parow aan 2 103 aanklagte van kinderseksoortredings skuldig bevind. Hy het skuld op die aanklagte beken. Hy is agt jaar tronkstraf opgelê, wat in geheel vir vyf jaar opgeskort is. Sy opgeskorte vonnis het groot kritiek en verontwaardiging ontlok.

Die staat het teen die vonnis geappelleer en aangevoer die landdros het met vonnisoplegging glad nie die erns van die misdade en die belange van die gemeenskap in ag geneem nie. Die man, van ’n plaas buite Durbanville, het sy eie seuns, sy bure se dogters en sy skoonsuster misbruik om pornografie te vervaardig. Hy het in die nag na die slapende kinders gegaan, hul slaapklere verwyder en foto’s met sy selfoon van hul geslagsdele geneem. Onder sy slagoffers was ’n sesjarige, ’n agtjarige en ’n negejarige.

Die man is aangekeer nadat hy en sy gesin in Januarie 2011 met vakansie gegaan en hy sy buurman gevra het om sy huis op te pas.

Die buurman wou ’n rolprent op die man se rekenaar kyk en het op pornografiese foto’s van sy eie kinders afgekom. Hy het die

man se vrou in kennis gestel en die polisie ingeroep. Meer as 10 000 foto’s is in die man se besit gevind. Hy het van 2001 tot met sy inhegtenisneming in Januarie 2011 pornografiese foto’s geneem en rolprente van die kinders vervaardig.

Regter André le Grange en waarnemende regter Leslie Weinkove het sy vonnis verswaar en hom tot tien jaar tronkstraf gevonnis, waarvan twee jaar opgeskort is, berig Die Burger. Hulle het bevind die streeklanddros het gefouteer deur die beskuldigde se belange swaarder te weeg as die gemeenskap se belange. “Daar is geen twyfel nie dat die man ’n geneigdheid het om pornografie te vervaardig. Hy vervaardig dit wanneer hy baie stres ervaar en gebruik die beelde om homself seksueel te verlig,” het Le Grange volgens Die Burger gesê.

Die man het ’n valse beeld van vertroue tussen hom en die kinders gebou. Le Grange het gesê die streeklanddros het gefouteer deur te sê die kinders, wat geslaap het terwyl die voorvalle plaasgevind het, is nie erg getraumatiseer nie omdat hulle niks kan onthou nie. Hy het gesê die landdros het ook gefouteer met sy argument dat een van die slagoffers nie omgegee het om deel te neem aan die seksuele fotografering nie.

“Kinderpornografie word wêreldwyd veroordeel, en met goeie rede. Dit maak inbreuk op ’n kind se reg tot privaatheid en waardigheid. Die man het sy dade beplan en is manipulerend. Hy is ’n gevaar vir die gemeenskap,” het Le Grange volgens Die Burger gesê.

“It is scary to be exposed to such a stark reality. But being as prepared as you can be, and knowing that you have to do whatever it takes to save your own life, gives you a line of defence.”

One mean dream team

A

Dream Team. This is how a group of teenage youths from the Kraaifontein, Brackenfell, Elsies River and Stellenbosch areas were deemed after being chosen to experience a select weekend camp recently.

A large group of u.16 youths from Wallacedene High, Hector Peterson High, Scottsville High, Scottsdene High, Scottsville Development (a mixed team from the school), Bernadino Heights, Elsies River High and Brackenfell High A and B teams, as well as six netball teams from Lindelani Development (a care centre in Stellenbosch) and Hector Peterson High initially participated in an educational camp this past Youth Day. Granthem Abrahams, founder of the Be the Difference Foundation (BTD), and his team then selected a Dream Team made up of 20 boys selected from the groups that attended.

The Dream Team was then privileged to

attend a follow-up educational camp.

The initiative was sponsored by Crunchie Carrots.

Abrahams describes the event as an educational camp to empower the youth and show them that there are sports beyond just rugby.

He says the focus of the weekend was not only to inspire and motivate the group, but to educate them on what is needed to further their education.

Professional sports stars also came to share their stories. Edwill van der Merwe (Stormers player) spoke about his experiences as a student at Stellenbosch University, while Craig Barry (WP player) and Justin Geduld (SA Blitzbok) also shared their stories.

According to Abrahams, the Dream Team represented BTD in the Land Rover N1 City Rugby Festival held in Brackenfell last weekend, winning 19-0 against De Kuilen on

BTD's Dream Team won on Saturday against Humansdorp in the Land Rover N1 City Festival the Friday and 47-0 against Humansdorp on the Saturday.

The Dream Team will also represent BTD at the Starter Academy Sevens Tournament in September.

Abrahams says they are also extremely proud of Bernadino Heights for winning the 2017 u.16 BTD Sevens, winning 15-7 against

Elsies River in the final to take the cup.

He says the youth need to understand that not everyone will become Stormers or Springboks.

Dit is ’n vreemde rekord om op aanspraak te maak, maar ek hou moontlik die rekord vir die meeste kere vir dieselfde persoon sê sy pa is oorlede.

Dit was net meer as vyf maande nadat my broer ernstige breinskade in ’n ongeluk opgedoen het. Ons pa, wat al ’n rukkie siek was, se lyf kon nie meer byhou nie. “Waar is Pappa?” het my broer gevra. “Pappa is dood. Vanoggend,” het ek gesê en in sy dowwe oë gekyk.

“Oukei,” het hy geantwoord. “Waar’s my beursie?” het hy toe gevra. Hy het dit in sy broeksak gesien, opgekyk en weer gevra: “Waar is Pappa?” Oor en oor en oor. Maklik 30 keer ’n dag.

Municipality is making me mad!

The municipality of Cape Town, like all the other municipalities in the country, is owned by the very councillors for whom we have voted. The councillors and senior management feel absolutely nothing for ratepayers, as they have captured the cities and towns after every election.

They do not believe that the ratepayers have any say or that they should have an interest in the day-to-day running of the councils. Ask any councillor and he will tell you that ratepayers’ associations have no power.

In fact, the councils tolerate them but actually feel nothing for them. Service delivery is poor and workers have a no-care attitude, as rot starts at the top and filters down. For example, go to any licensing department – half the counters are closed and the rest are working at a snail’s pace. Staff close counters or disappear for long periods; they could not care less about the queues waiting patiently, as we have no other option. Behind the scenes we can see people wandering around aimlessly and standing around chatting.

Take the current drought: Are we kept informed on a weekly basis of what contingency plans have been made and the progress? Not at all, not even from the provincial government. Our premier is fixed to her computer and Twitter. Our mayor keeps a low profile and it makes you wonder if she knows what to do.

It is time that the mayor and all her councillors start realising that the City of Cape Town belongs to the

residents, and we want action immediately!

I also believe that any employee who earns more than R600 000 per year should forfeit increases for the next two to three years. We cannot afford to pay you more! Councillors’ salaries should be frozen until the next municipal elections.

Before the elections, their salaries should be fixed and remain so for the five-year period.

Onlangs het ek ondervind hoe dié mense amper ongelukke veroorsaak in die stadige oggendverkeer voor sewe.

Mense is so besig op hul selfone dat drie amper in my motor se agterkant vasgery het. In een voorval moes ek op my toeter lê om die persoon agter my te waarsku dat sy voor haar moet kyk.

Teen daardie tyd was sy ’n haarbreedte van my motor se agterkant af.

Hierin lê twee gevare: As bestuurder konsentreer jy so hard oor wat voor en agter jou gebeur, dat jy nie nog aandag aan die voertuie langs jou gee nie.

Die gevaar is dat jy in ’n oogwink in die motor voor jou kan vasry, omdat jy die persoon agter jou dophou.

Waar gaan dit eindig?

Ons is almal grootmense. Is ons so verslaaf aan ons fone soos tieners wat nie eens ’n halfuur sonder dit kan klaarkom nie?

Wetgewing kan niks daaraan doen nie.

Ons moet self na die gevolge kyk – beserings, koste

en ongerief.

Ekstra klasse in wiskunde help wel “Ekstra wiskundeklasse help selde,” was die boodskap van ’n berig in die TygerBurger van 5 Julie.

Die hoofdoel van bogenoemde studie was om eerstens die vakkennis van Afrikaanse wiskunde-onderwysers te meet en tweedens om veranderlikes te identifiseer wat betrekking het op leerderprestasie.

So is bevind dat die Afrikaanse wiskunde-onderwysersers in die studie uiters bekwaam, ervare en goed opgelei is. Verder is bevind dat daar ’n positiewe ooreenkoms tussen die vakkennis van die onderwyser en sy leerders se prestasie is. Reg so. As die onnie dit verstaan, dan leer hy die kinders reg.

Een van die veranderlikes waarna ook gekyk is, was ekstra klasse. Die studie het bevind dat leerders wat ekstra klasse neem, 10% swakker vaar as dié wat nie ekstra klasse neem nie (55% teenoor 65%). Verder is ’n negatiewe ooreenkoms gevind tussen die aantal ekstra klasse per week en wiskunde-prestasie.

Hieruit word die gevolgtrekking gemaak dat dit wat in die klaskamer gebeur, bepalend is vir ’n leerder se prestasie en dat ekstra klasse nie veel help nie. As ’n Afrikaanse wiskunde- en wetenskaponderwyser wat self darem ook ’n bietjie wiskundige statistiekkennis het en ook ekstra klasse gee, bevraagteken ek hierdie gevolgtrekking.

Die prestasies van die leerders voor die neem van ekstra klasse van beide groepe moet vergelykbaar wees. Die wiskundige aanleg, vermoë of basiese getalbegrip vir die twee groepe moet vergelykbaar wees, maar

meeste leerders wat ekstra klasse neem, is juis swakker hierin. Dit beteken bloot dat daar ’n sydigheid in die eksperiment is, wat enige vergelyking tussen die twee groepe ongeldig maak. Hierdie studie, wat ook net op gr.

12-leerders fokus, gee nie die antwoord nie.

Om die impak van ekstra klasse te ondersoek, is meer navorsing nodig. In die verslag word ook gemeld dat 20% van die gr. 12-leerders aantoon dat die ekstraklas-fasiliteerder ’n beduidende rol in hul prestasie speel. Om te beweer dat ekstra klasse nie help nie, is dus nie net teenstrydig met die studie nie, maar ook ’n duidelike waninterpretasie van die beskikbare data. Daar is bekwame en ervare ekstraklas-onderwysers in die noordelike voorstede by wie baie leerders baat. Hulle is juis daar om ’n belangrike aanvullende, remediërende en ondersteunende rol te speel deur onderpresterende leerders te help.

Domestics being failed in Vredekloof The residents of Vredekloof pay additional money to keep their streets clean, so I am told. They have an efficient and well-run neighbourhood watch. However, they cannot arrange to have a decent bus shelter installed (albeit privately) for the ladies who clean their homes. In summer these ladies sit on the grass and in winter they have to stand or sit on the cold cement blocks while waiting for buses. They are tired after a day’s work and have to walk to the bus stop and then stand and wait. Is it too much trouble to have a bus shelter erected for these ladies?

Conference on concept ‘compassion’

T

he concept “compassion” will be the focus of the annual interfaith conference of Neo-Spektrum on Saturday 5 August from 09:00 to 13:00 in the auditorium of Sanlam’s head office in Strand Street.

Speakers from four different religions, namely Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Christianity, will discuss their own unique understanding of the concept of compassion.

Kirti Pandya from India, a priest at the Radha Krishna Temple of the Cape Hindu Cultural Association, will talk from a Hindu perspective.

Muhsin Hendricks, an imam and executive director of The Inner Circle of Al-Fitrah in Cape Town, will present the Islamic perspective.

The Buddhist perspective will be presented by Anita George, a Nichiren Buddhist of the Soka Gakkia International Group in South Africa.

Terblanche Jordaan, the spiritual leader of Neo-Spektrum in Durbanville, will talk about the Christian perspective.

They will discuss the focus of each of these religions in respect of compassion and what they have in common.

The cost is R200 per person or R300 for two people.

Retirees can join club The Bellville Social Club, the South African Association of Retired Persons (SAARP) invites all retirees (above 50 years of age) to join the club.

Groot uitdagings vir aktrise in dié hoofrol NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

S

y moes ’n bietjie Nama leer praat en het ure op ’n yskoue stel deurgebring, maar die aktrise Crystal Donna Roberts het ander ongewone uitdagings in haar jongste fliek teëgekom.

“Die grootste uitdaging wat ek teëgekom het, was perdry,” lag sy oor haar spanningsvolle oomblikke agterop die stokou Tokkels se rug. “Én om ’n vrou te speel van wie ons so min weet.”

Roberts, wat in Boston bly, is die hoofkarakter in die nuwe plaaslike fliek, Krotoa, oor die geskiedkundige Khoi-prinses wat ook as Eva bekendstaan.

“Om dié karakter lewend te maak, was ’n uitdaging,” vertel sy. “Ons het al beelde en

video’s van Madiba gesien en onderhoude gekyk. Ons weet hoe hy lyk en hoe hy praat, maar ons weet baie min van Krotoa,” verduidelik sy.

“Maar dit is hoekom ons goeie regisseurs het om ons met daardie proses te help.”

In die fliek volg ons die storie van Krotoa wat as tolk tussen Jan van Riebeeck (gespeel deur Armand Aucamp van Die Boekklubfaam) en die Khoi-stam optree.

Krotoa poog om die wêrelde van die Hollanders en Khoi-stamme te versoen, maar kry ongekende teëspoed in die proses.

Die fliek was ’n eer, sê Roberts. “Ons moet ons geskiedenis ken. Ek glo nog altyd jy weet nie waarheen jy gaan as jy nie weet waar jy was nie.”

Dit is boonop raar vir ’n bruin Suid-Afrikaanse aktrise om ’n hoofrol in ’n fliek te speel, sê sy.

“Ek het natuurlik gespring toe ek die geleentheid kry,” vertel sy.

Die fliek draai eers in Augustus op eie bodem, maar ryg al vir maande internasionale pryse in.

Roberts sê sy is opgewonde én skrikkerig oor hoe dit in Suid-Afrika ontvang sal word.

“Dit het ongelooflik goed oorsee gedoen en dit is fantasties, maar dit is ’n storie van ’n Suid-Afrikaanse Khoi-vrou en ek hoop dit kry baie goeie terugvoer. Ek hoop daar word gesprekke daaroor gevoer en dit motiveer ander om soortgelyke stories na te vors.”

Roberts en haar man, Schalk Cornelessen, bly al vier jaar in Boston.

“Ek is mal oor Boston,” vertel sy.

“Die gees en die energie maak my siel gelukkig.”

Karate­ouma spog met tweede dan NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

D

ie meeste mense sit ná hul terugslae in sak en as, maar Bellville se karate-ouma het nog baie skop.

Ouma Joan van der Merwe (86) het in Mei vanjaar haar tweede dan in karate verwerf.

“Om hierdie prestasie in jou tagtigerjare te bereik, is in my ervaring ongehoord,” vertel Hennie Bosman, eienaar van die Kyokushin-kan-Welgemoeddojo, waar ouma Joan die afgelope 16 jaar oefen.

“Om ’n swartbelt (eerste dan) in Kyokushin-karate te kry neem omtrent sewe jaar en 1 000 uur se oefening. Net 4% van karate-deelnemers kry dít reg. Net omtrent 1% kry ’n tweede dan.”

Ouma Joan sê sy was uit die veld geslaan toe sy hierdie eer ontvang.

“Ek het nie eers gedink ek gaan ’n swartbelt kry nie,” vertel sy beskeie.

“Kyk, baie mense gaan vir ’n swartbelt, maar ek het nie daarvoor gemik nie. Ek het gegaan om myself te leer verdedig.”

Ouma Joan, wat op 70 met karate begin het, het op 80 haar eerste swartbelt gekry.

Haar karate-lewe het begin toe sy selfverdediging wou leer nadat sy ’n plaasaanval in Caledon oorleef het en op haar kinders se aandrang terug Bellville toe getrek het.

“Ná twee maande het ek gevoel dit is nou nie genoeg nie en vir Hennie gevra of ek nie maar na die karateklub kan kom nie.”

Deur die jare het ouma Joan meer terugslae gehad en in 2009 ’n beroerte gehad en in 2010 was sy in ’n motorongeluk.

Sy het egter aanhou oefen en gaan deesdae drie keer ’n week vir karate-

klasse.

“Ek hou van die dissipline wat daar by karate is. ’n Mens moet respek hê.

In ’n klas kan jy byvoorbeeld nie praat nie en ons loop volgens ons rang in.”

Dié ouma van sewe kleinkinders is ook die ma van vyf kinders en geniet dit nou om so na aan haar familie te wees.

Buiten karate woon ouma Joan ook weekliks kunsklasse by.

“Ek het nog altyd gehou van handvlyt, maar ek het nooit met die kinders tyd gehad nie.”

Sy hou ook van lees en blokkiesraaisels invul. Vroeër jare het sy kalligrafie gedoen en aan porseleinpoppe gewerk en sê sy sou seker nou nog meer gedoen het as sy meer geld gehad het.

“Ek wil net nog iets doen en nog iets doen.”

Haar aktiwiteite dra dan juis by tot haar goeie gesondheid, glo sy.

“Jy moet besig wees anders word jy voor jou tyd oud.”

Bosman sê die meeste mense besef nie watter fisieke uitdagings daaraan verbonde is om so ver in karate te vorder nie.

“Die meeste mense hou teen 75 met sport op. Ouma Joan is 86 en sy doen nog pushups. Ons besef nie hoe moeilik dit is nie, want ons is nie in ons tagtigs nie.”

Dit is duidelik sy het ’n baie belangrike plek by dié karateklub.

“Ouma Joan is ’n baie spesiale persoon,” sê Hennie. “Sy word deur almal bewonder.”

“Ja,” lag ouma Joan, “as ek nie daar is nie, dan vra almal waar is ek? ’n Mens kan seker sê hulle het soos familie geword.”

ie Speel-Speel-Slim-kleuterskool in Langeberg Ridge het besluit om vir Mandeladag uit te reik na die Kraaifontein-tehuis vir bejaardes.

Heinrich Annandale, ’n mede-eienaar van die skool, sê die personeel en ouers het almal ingespring om te help bak aan die 160 kolwyntjies.

“Ons 14 personeellede en ’n paar van die mammies het hand bygesit,” sê hy.

Volgens Annandale was dit baie

pret vir die kinders om te help versier aan die kolwyntjies. “Ons moes ook mooi verduidelik het dat dit nie vir hulle is nie. Maar ’n paar het lekker aan die versiersuiker gelek.”

Hy sê hulle het dié tehuis gekies omdat hulle voorheen ook daar betrokke was. “Hulle is ook naby aan ons skooltjie en ons ondersteun graag mense in ons gemeenskap.”

Hy sê hulle het ’n oulike bedankingsbrief van die tehuis gekry.

“Hulle was baie dankbaar vir die kuier en die lekker happies wat hul dag opgehelder het. Hulle was ook

verras deur die kleurvolle kolwyntjies.”

Annandale sê hulle wou hê die kinders moes deel wees van die ervaring en die grootsheid van die dag. Daarom het hulle besluit op kolwyntjies, wat self deur die kinders versier kon word.

Sy personeel was self ook geraak deur die besoek, en sal graag by ’n volgende geleentheid langer wil gaan kuier. “Ons sal graag weer na hul stories luister,” sê hy.

his year is turning out to be a busy one for local Mills & Boon author, Therese Beharrie (25).

Beharrie released her first book with the world-renowned romance publisher in January, and is now looking forward to the release of her third novel, The Millionaire’s Redemption.

The novel will be released on 1 August and being proudly South African, Beharrie has chosen to make Cape Town the setting.

“I try to write stories I wish I had read while I was growing up,” she explains, referring to the characters and setting.

With her books, which focus largely on romantic pursuits and relationships, she is attempting to make romance stories more diverse by having her main characters be of mixed race. She says that when she saw the cover of her new book, it was a personal victory for her, as once she submits the final copy of her book the publisher gets to decide on how the cover will look. She says that the publisher’s decision to place a mixed-race couple on the cover makes her feel as if her attempt to diversify romance and move away from mainstream romance characters is not a futile one.

Beharrie, who was initially contracted with the publisher for two books and then a further four books, says that she’s realised through the writing process that she is capable of writing quite quickly. “I definitely feel that I have a future with Mills & Boon, but apart from writing for them I would like to, in future, take on one or two projects per year outside of my contract.”

K

uils River-based skills academy Reach Make It! recently completed the training of its 600th student. The academy specialises in training students in welding and is located in the Kuils River industrial area. It is aimed at ensuring that those who are unable to afford the fees of Further Education and Training (FET) colleges are able to study and develop some sort of skill.

Thabo Sigenene (34) from Blackheath, the 600th student, says the training he received at the academy has developed in him an in-

valuable skill set, as he is now able to start his own welding business.

Sigenene started at the academy in April and underwent three months of theoretical and practical training. “It was quite the experience for me, because I didn’t know a thing about welding when I started out,” says Sigenene. “The course is not easy and for the first three weeks I was tired and panicking,” he laughs.

Sigenene initially worked for a steelwork engineering company as a driver before deciding to become a welder, he says.

“I went to enquire at Northlink, but the fees were too high and I couldn’t afford it.”

It was then when someone recommended the academy to him.

“I resigned from my job as a driver because I wanted to fulfil my dream of having a better job. I was able to leave my job and afford the fees at the academy,” says Sigenene.

According to Humphry Joseph, a founding member of the academy alongside Leweza in the Netherlands, the facility was founded out of a need to cater to those unable to afford FET fees.

“Before starting the academy we asked ourselves what we could do to help the unemployed and poorest of the poor,” explains Joseph.

“The answer that came to mind was that we can only alleviate poverty through skills development.”

The academy was started in 2008 and is accredited with the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MerSETA). “It was important to us that we be accredited so that we can give youngsters a qualification that is worth something,” explains Joseph.

There are currently 12 men undergoing practical training at the academy under the guidance of Leonard Charles.

Once their three-month training at the academy has been completed, the students have to complete a three-month internship.

Once this has been completed, they will be fully fledged and qualified carbon steel welders.

Asked whether they also have female students, Joseph says: “Of course we do. We’ve actually had quite a few females. We’re open to all persons who want to develop a skill set to improve their living situation.”

Joseph says they keep to very high standards, as government representatives can walk in at any moment.

“We keep a file on every student and track their progress in that way,” says Joseph.

“No matric qualification is necessary to study at the academy,” explains Joseph.

However, in order to become an artisan in South Africa, a student must have completed Grade 9.

The academy will, however, accept those who have not completed Grade 9, but these students will only be able to undergo the three months of basic training, and will not be able to complete an internship.

“Our goal is to develop an employable skill in all persons so that everyone will have the opportunity to have a qualification and skill that will enable them to get decent work,” says Joseph.

Remarkable revamp for charity shop

Mandela Day last Tuesday to revamp the charity shop at the Durbanville Children’s Home.

“The charity shop is an important source of income for the home and assists in buying school clothes for the approximately 140 children in the home’s care,” says Lizelle Louw, marketing manager of the centre.

“Our team spent the day packing out stock and making attractive displays of the items to enhance sales. We also built shelves for the displays and made signage for the shop.”

“The shop has the most beautiful ‘hidden treasures’ – from clothes to decor. It will be great if more people go have a look at what they offer and support them,” she says.

The charity shop is open from Mondays to Fridays from 10:00 to 15:00, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00.

Film contest to promote awareness The Western Province Blood Transfusion Service’s (WPBTS) annual #YouthTube competition for young aspiring filmmakers returns this year, following its success in 2016.

The competition, aimed at young people aged 15 to 25 years, is focused on raising awareness about blood donation through creative filmmaking.

Irene van Schalkwyk, promotions manager at WPBTS, says the aim of the campaign is to spread the word about the significance of blood donation among the youth in the Western Cape. “The goal of the campaign is to create brand awareness around blood donation, to increase blood collections and to provide a platform for young and aspiring filmmakers to showcase their talent. Ultimately, we want to save lives and inspire our youth to join in.”

The competition comprises two entry categories: Category 1 is open to youth aged 15 to 19, and Category 2 is open to youth aged 20 to 25.

Entries for the competition are open until 18 September. Winners will be determined through a public vote in October and will be announced in November.

Prizes up for grabs consist of camera gear for the category winners. Schools with the most entries will win a Canon camera. Lucky voters will stand a chance to win prizes sponsored by Galileo and Tracker.

Secret Sunrise brings smiles for miles T

he greenbelt behind Willowbridge Shopping Centre came alive on Saturday with more than 100 people braving the cold to take part in a Secret Sound event.

Young and old danced until the sun rose, as part of a Mandela Day project in aid of the Durbanville Children’s Home.

An amount of R2500 was raised through this event and another Secret Sunrise event in Cape Town, while Willowbridge Shopping Centre donated five tins of food for every

ticket sold. About 500 tins of food will soon be handed over to the home.

The management team of Willowbridge Shopping Centre also revamped the charity shop at the home on Mandela Day. The next Secret Sunrise event will be held in Cape Town on 24 August. Visit Secret Sunrise Cape Town on Facebook for more information closer to the time.

Franse bied Cheslin ‘nuwe lewe’ AVRIL FILLIES

S

y eerste aanbod om vir die Franse klub Toulouse te speel, het Cheslin Kolbe (23) van Kraaifontein reeds in 2013 ontvang. Hy het begin vanjaar die aanbod aanvaar en sal hom aan die einde van die Super Rugby-seisoen in Frankryk gaan vestig.

“Ek het in 2013 vir die SA o.20-span gespeel toe ek die eerste aanbod gekry het. Ek het gevoel ek is nog te jonk, want ek was net besig om impak op die rugbytoneel te maak. Ek het ook net begin om sewesrugby te speel en was nog nie seker watter kode ek verkies nie,” het Cheslin gesê.

“Ek weet rugbykenners meen dat Franse rugby nie kan kers vashou by rugby in die Verenigde Koninkryk nie. Die Franse se klubrugby is baie kompeterend en die rede waarom die nasionale span so sukkel, is omdat die meeste spelers in hul klubkompetisies van oorsee is en dus nie in aanmerking kan kom vir die nasionale span nie.

“Ek is eintlik baie bevoorreg om sedert 2014 vir die Blitsbokke en ook vir die Stormers in Super Rugby te speel. Nie almal het daardie voorreg nie. Jou sewesvaardighede kom jou goed te pas as jy 15’s speel. Ek weet daar was baie rugbyondersteuners wat gevoel het dat ek en ander spelers van die 15-mankode, soos Juan de Jongh en Francois Hougaard, nie verdien het om SA by die Olimpiese Spele in Rio de Janeiro te verteenwoordig nie. Ek het jammer gevoel vir my sewesspanmaat Branco du Preez, wat jare vir die Blitsbokke uitgedraf en nie die span gehaal het nie.

Hy het gesukkel met beserings en was net besig om van sy beserings te herstel toe die span vir Rio gekies is,” vertel Cheslin.

Volgens hom het Neil Powell, afrigter van die Blitsbokke, aan die groter prentjie gedink en nie die span uit sentiment gekies nie.

“Hougie se gebaar om sy bronsmedalje aan Seabelo Senatla te oorhandig, het almal verstom.

Ons wat deel is of was van die Blitsbokke, kan jou verseker dit is deel van die Blitsbok-kultuur.

en jy deel in almal se lief en leed,” het hy gesê.

Intussen is hy druk besig om Frans te leer lees en praat en woon Franse klasse by en laai ook die toeps (apps) af.

“My eerste taak sal wees om so gou as moontlik by die rugby-omstandighede daar aan te pas. Ek sal hul speelstelsel moet leer ken en my voete vinnig moet vind. Ek sal ook nuwe mense ontmoet en leer ken en dan sal ek maar my Frans op die inwoners moet toets. Ek wil net my familie, vriende en ondersteuners verseker dat ek glad nie Toulose toe gaan om to lose nie, maar gaan probeer om dieselfde spel wat ek hier lewer, ook daar te lewer,” skerts Cheslin.

Hy beskou homself as ’n heelagter en toe hy aan die begin van die jaar op vleuel gekies is, het hy besluit om sy rugby by die Stormers te geniet, ongeag waar hy in die agterlyn speel.

“Die afgelope twee wedstryde was ek in my element op heelagter en dis seker ook hoekom my spanmaats my toegelaat het om driekunste in albei wedstryde te behaal,” het hy gesê.

Sy raad aan jong spelers is om rugby die eerste paar jaar te geniet.

“Wanneer jy begin speel, sluit jy vriendskappe wat jare gaan duur en jy moet elke oomblik geniet. Die Here het vir jou ’n plan uitgelê en jy moet net getrou bly aan daardie plan. Ek weet, want ek beleef Sy plan eerstehands.

“Waarna ek die meeste in Frankryk gaan verlang is my ma se kos, biltong, my vriende, familie en spanmaats. Ek weet die Franse kan nie braai nie, want hulle eet paddaboudjies en allerlei fyner geregte, maar dis iets wat ek hulle kan leer.

My opgewondenheid om oorsee te speel, laat die adrenalien nog pomp, maar ek weet God is in beheer,” het hy gesê.

Dit is nog steeds sy droom om ’n Springbok te word, maar hy is tevrede dat hy ’n Blitsbok en SA o.20-speler is.

“Nie almal kan sê dat hy ook ’n Olimpiese atleet is nie, en ek het dit vermag. Ek hoop om weer vir die Blitsbokke in 2020 in Japan uit te draf,” het Cheslin gesê.

Durbell het verras met sy oorwinning van 24-22 oor Hamiltons, die naasvoorloper op die punteleer. Dit was die Durbies se agste sege in ’n ry en sal gewis as ’n motivering dien wanneer hulle die komende naweek te staan kom teen Valsbaai, die huidige voorbok op die punteleer.

ara Gorlei laid last year’s ghost to rest when she defeated fellow USA collegiate golfer Jessica Dreesbeimdieke for the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Championship title at Stellenbosch Golf Club on Wednesday last week.

Just 12 months after the 21-year-old golfer from Milnerton squandered the lead and lost the title to Lumien Orton, Gorlei rolled in a three-foot birdie putt at the last hole to beat

the lanky Namibian 1-up.

“To hold this trophy has been a goal for so many years; this is really a dream come true,” said Gorlei.

Last year Gorlei led the final but lost it down the back nine, and at one point in the final round, she had a strong sense of deja vu. “It was a tough final because Jessica never lets up,” said Gorlei. “When I went from 4-up to 2-down, I thought ‘here we go again’,

but I pulled it through and I’m absolutely over the moon. On behalf of all the amateurs, but especially the young girls, I want to thank Sanlam and Gary van Loggerenberg for supporting women’s amateur golf in such a big way.”

Gorlei put the championship field on notice when she won the seeding round on a count out, and after a first round bye, the former GolfRSA Elite Squad player fired the first warning shot with a crushing 6 & 4 win against Elsune Roode from KwaZulu-Natal.

She dispatched Larissa du Preez from Gauteng North 4 & 3 in round three, and routed local favourite Crystal Beukes at the 19th hole on her home course to make the semi-finals. She eliminated reigning University Sport South Africa champion Sarah Bouch from Ekurhuleni 2-up to another stab at glory.

Meanwhile, Dreesbeimdieke downed Lizzie Currie from KwaZulu-Natal 5 & 4 in round two, Gauteng’s Chiara Contomathios 3 & 1 in the third round, and Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North 2 & 1 before facing South Africa’s third-ranked Zethu Myeki for a spot in the final.

Myeki stumbled out of the blocks with a double bogey start and handed the lead to the University of Denver student.

Dreesbeimdieke was relentless and had a 4-up through seven. Myeki won the eighth hole with a birdie, but the Namibian parred 15-hole to win 4 & 3.

Both finalists bogeyed the opening hole in the final, but Gorlei drew first blood with a birdie at the second and moved 2-up with another gain at the fourth.

“I had about 50 yards in and pitched it a foot from the hole and made the putt at two and at four. I hit a good drive, and a good second to four feet and holed it,” said Gorlei.

Aaliyah Abrahams from Rondebosch Golf Club and Jessica Green from Clovelly, from the Women’s Golf Western Province HPC Coaching Programme, went toe-to-toe in the third place play-off, with Abrahams the victor after she triumphed at the 19th hole.
