T
he animal hospital against which a formal complaint was lodged after the death of a Rottweiler, has contacted TygerBuger with their side of events after more complaints came to light. In an article in TygerBurger (‘Dog died waiting for care at vet’) published on 5 February, the story of Amiga, the Rottweiler of Nico Loubser, who died at the Tygerberg Animal Hospital (TAH) in Bellville, were told. In that story Loubser alleges that he and his friend were made to wait unnecessarily during the last crucial moments of Amiga’s life, before she died under one of the benches in the waiting room.
More complaints Loubser laid a complaint with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) in which he expressed his feelings about the emergency, he feels went ignored. Subsequent to that story, three other people have come forward with complaints, two of which are directed at the TAH in Bellville and Brackenfell. These complaints were put to Dr John Adam, a partner at the TAH. His response to these and Loubser’s complaints are as follows: “(The) TAH is a multi-man practice with over twenty vets and many other nursing and orderly staff. We pride ourselves on the service we deliver as well as the high standards we set in terms of the care we give and the equipment and modern technology we use in ensuring those standards,” he said. “As in all large organisations there are
bound to be times when things are not handled in an ideal manner. We always investigate when complaints arise although the number of complaints are far outweighed by the compliments and thanks we get for services we have rendered to our clients and their pets,” he explained. “In cases where we find we could have given better service we strive to correct any shortcomings that we perceive. “We do not hesitate to admit where we were found to be wanting, but by the same token vigourously defend our practice and staff where we feel we have been accused of failings that, in our opinion, did not warrant the allegations. “One such case is that of the Rottweiler Amiga, belonging to Mr Loubser. The matter is now in the hands of the SAVC and, as such, is ‘sub iudice’. We will await their inquiry before any further comment.” “We take any and all complaints very seriously,” he concluded.
Council The SAVC have confirmed that Adam is a member of the SAVC council. “While Dr Adam is a SAVC Council member, he is not involved in any investigations conducted by the Investigations Committee of the SAVC in any manner at all,” said Dinamarie Stoltz, legal director at the SAVC about the case concerning Amiga. “Council members are expected and indeed required to recuse themselves from any matter in which they may have a personal interest or conflict of interest,” she said. “We received one complaint against a veterinarian at one of TAH’s branches during the past five years, which was investigated and dismissed due to a lack of grounds.”
