D

uring the height of the Corona-pandemic in mid-winter, the words of the now iconic South African song, “Jerusalema”, morphed into an international anthem of hope . . . and it’s not going away just yet.

As president Cyril Ramaphosa endorsed the accompanying dance challenge ahead of the country opening up for tourism this week, Brackenfell High School has thus far reached 56 000 views on Facebook for its rendition of the dance-challenge.

The production was tailor made for Heritage Day, with an endearing theme, “I am

different”.

The video was directed by dance teacher Bernice Gordon and shot almost entirely on her Apple iPhone 11 by co-educator Jenna Merrington.

vers. For Brakkie-learners the uplifting song also symbolises the diversity of their school community.

Ten languages feature in the video, representative of learners at the school. It includes Shona, Afrikaans, Swahili, Xhosa, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Zulu and French.

“The project was inspired by the diversity of our youth. The beauty of our diversity is that we are all so different, but yet so the same,” says Gordon.

“With our differences come challenges because it is not always easy to create a complete atmosphere for inclusion.

“But we are united in our efforts to work hard to do this. This is what we wanted to

show with the video.

“As educators it is our responsibility to teach our learners how to live in a community that is inclusive of everyone.”

Gordon says the entire school was involved, the dance class, other learners, teachers, the principal and all the staff.

“From planning to execution, it was truly a team effort.”

Taking tips from her father, a film director in Cape Town, Merrington enjoyed playing around with the iPhone, during shoots.

“We tried different angles and played around with moving tripods.

“Apart from aerial shots from the drone footage, the entire video was shot on an iPhone 11,” she says.

R27 million relief fund for businesses Provincial minister of finance David Maynier last week launced the Western Cape Covid-19 Business Relief Fund, which commits R27 million to supporting small businesses in both the formal and informal sectors who have been hard-hit by Covid-19 restrictions.

“We know that times have been tough for businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fund will provide financial assistance in the form of a financial grant to businesses who can apply to either the formal or informal business category. The grant will be used exclusively to subsidise business expenses such as fixed costs, operational costs, supplier debt and other pressure cost items,” he said in a statement to the media.

“With the move to alert level 1 which allows more businesses to safely open, this fund is an important step in our economic recovery plan to help businesses to rebuild and save jobs in the Western Cape. And so, I would like to encourage all interested small businesses to apply. We look forward to receiving your submissions.”

The closing date for submissions is Monday, 12 October 2020 at 10:00.

Desal plants take final bow T

he Monwabisi desalination plant is being decommissioned as the two-year period for which it was hired has come to an end.

Decommissioning of its counterpart in Strandfontein already commenced in June this year, and is currently underway.

The City commissioned both the Monwabisi and Strandfontein temporary desalination plants to provide emergency water supply in the event that it was needed, as we faced the prospect of Day Zero.

“The Monwabisi temporary desalination plant bids farewell at a very different time to when it was first commissioned during the worst drought in the Cape. Dam levels have recently reached 98,2% as of 21 September,” the City stated in a media release on Monday 28 September.

“The City has also made big strides towards implementation of larger schemes, as outlined in our water strategy. The first water from the Table Mountain Group Aquifer abstraction programme has already come online, contributing around 15 million litres of groundwater per day to our water

supply. “Operation of these plants has provided valuable hands-on experience in producing desalinated water, which will help us as we work towards larger scale desalination projects. The experience taught us a lot about the management of a desalination plant, and built confidence that this is a viable way of reliably producing good quality drinking water,” said Xanthea Limberg, Mayco member for water and sanitation in the City.

“Once the plant has been shut down, the infrastructure will be removed in phases by the contractor. Timeframes for the removal of infrastructure will largely be dependent on the weather and sea conditions. During this time, public access to sections of the area may be limited, at short notice, depending on the scope of the work.

The area on which the plant was built will be restored to its former condition.

“An environmental control officer will monitor the rehabilitation work,” she said.

According to Limberg, local community members were given work opportunities throughout the duration of the project, from

construction right through to the operation of the desalination plant.

“Residents are advised that it is likely there will be a slight change to the taste of water as supply shifts back to surface water, but are assured that the strict Sans241 standards remain in place and that the water remains safe to drink.”

Water security going forward Limberg said the drought showed that the City needed to accelerate diversification of waters sources quickly. “The strategy for doing so is outlined in the City’s water strategy, which seeks to ensure that Cape Town will be more resilient to climate change and other shocks. In summary the City is committed to increasing supply by building affordable new capacity of approximately 300 million litres per day over the next 10 years, and in suitable increments thereafter, in a way that is adaptable and robust to changes in circumstances.”

Whale migration changes explored DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

I

n a world first, three universities in Cape Town will join an international research effort to unravel how changing ocean conditions are influencing migration patterns and recovery of the humpback whale population in the southern hemisphere, where numbers have significantly increased.

During whaling practises in the previous century, the population of the species dwindled, with more than 220 000 individual whales being hunted down between 1904 and 1972.

By the time the whaling industry ended there were only about 1 000 of these whales left in the oceans.

“With conservation regulations in the 1960s and 70s, numbers started to recover, doubling every seven years to a current population of 90 000,” says professor Ken Findlay, a whale expert at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

In recent years, experts have also noted changes in migration patterns of humpback whales, suspected to be linked to climate change.

Iconic to the southern ice sea, the humpback whale species are now the focus of this new six-year long research project, which will see contributions from 25 researchers from six countries including Australia and several South American countries.

The Whales and Climate Research Programme was conceptualised by prof Alakendra Roychoudhury, an environmental geochemist at the University of Stellenbosch in collaboration with prof Brendan Mackey, director of the Griffith Climate Change Response Programme at Griffith University in Australia.

According to Roychoudhury, the Arctic Ocean is largely unexplored and there is an urgent need for seasonal as well as longterm observations of this vast ocean.

“Climate change is drastically altering our oceans, with less ice in the Arctic and warmer water affecting the migration patterns of whales”, says Findlay.

“Humpback whales migrate each year between June and July from the cold Arctic past South Africa on both sides to breed in Angola and Gabon, Mozambique and Madagascar. By October and November they swim back.

“But last year they didn’t arrive in Mo-

zambique, why not? Something has happened and we don’t know what. The warmer water could be affecting their food source in the Arctic, causing them to not feed enough in order to migrate.”

Findlay says they have also spotted what is called super-groups of about 250 whales in the waters between Lamberts Bay and Cape Point during October and November in recent years. “This is unheard of. Could it be that they found a new food source?

“Researchers hope to identify and link these seasonal changes to the oceanographic and biogeochemical changes occurring in the Southern Ocean over the same time period,” he said.

Two pedestrians killed DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorkeon Two pedestrians lost their lives when they were knocked down on busy roads this past weekend.

On Saturday afternoon at about 16:15 an unknown man was killed when he ran onto the N1 near Joostenbergvlakte.

According to eyewitness accounts the man was playing soccer with a group of friends on an open field next to the highway. He died on impact.

In a second incident a woman died after a car hit her at the corner of Brackenfell Boulevard and Old Paarl Road.

The 23-year-old woman was an employee at a fast-food shop across the street, and was making her way home to Bloekombos when the incident occurred.

The vehicle was traveling in the direc-

tion of Protea Heights, according to police.

According to information from a source, two women was crossing the intersection.

The deceased stopped in the middle of the road to let vehicles pass.

Allegedly, she then suddenly stepped in front of the vehicle.

Paramedics responded and was on the scene within minutes.

“We found her laying helplessly in the road. Unfortunately due to the extensive injuries she sustained she was declared dead on the scene,” says Kobus Kotze, a spokesperson from Titanium ambulance services.

Brackenfell police was on the scene to investigate.

Cases of culpable homicde was openened.

Miss SA finale held in Cape Town For the first time in its 62-year history, the finale of the Miss South Africa pageant will be held in Cape Town.

Miss South Africa 2020 will be crowned at The Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront in an entertainmentpacked event on Saturday, October 24, from 17:00. The event will be screened live on M-Net and Mzansi Magic, and will be streamed live for an international audience.

Elderly couple survives Covid-19 A

Cape Town couple in their 90s were surprised to learn that they were in hospital together.

Netcare N1 City Hospital in Cape Town is celebrating the discharge of a senior citizen couple, Neville and Iris Adams, aged 91 and 90 respectively, who were both admitted with Covid-19 around the same time without even knowing it.

“Neville Adams was admitted on 16 August and his wife, Iris, a week later on 21 August, neither realising at first that they were just a room away from one another, both being treated in isolation in line with Netcare protocols. Neville Adams was astonished to learn that his wife was also admitted with him, doing well in her recovery and being cared for just next door,” says one of the couple’s treating physicians, Dr Zia Els. “Given their age and the fact that both have underlying medical conditions – Iris has diabetes and hypertension and Neville has kidney problems – we were deeply concerned about them when they were admitted.

I am delighted to say, however, that they both did remarkably well and are continuing to recover strongly at home after being discharged home together on Spring Day, 1 September,” says Els. “We’re going home,” said an excited Neville on the couple’s discharge. “We had quite an experience, but are both feeling much better now. The doctors and staff at the hospital treated us exceptionally well and we are deeply grateful to all of them.”

Netcare N1 City Hospital’s acting general manager, Morné Kielblock, says the hospital staff members and doc-

tors gave the couple a rousing send-off with a “guard of honour” when they were discharged and are rejoicing in their recovery. “Under the watchful eye of our outstanding medical and nursing teams, both these senior citizens survived the virus. It was a great privilege for us to treat such a brave couple and a morale booster for all of the doctors and staff to be able to send them home safely,” says Kielblock.

According to Els Iris was admitted with very similar symptoms to her husband and both were initially dependent on oxygen, with Neville spending the first few days in the high care unit of the hospital.

“The team treated them conservatively using less invasive ventilation techniques, to which they both responded well. The multi-disciplinary treatment teams at the hospital have used a conservative approach regarding ventilation where possible for Covid-19 patients throughout the pandemic and have achieved excellent results and outcomes. I would like to thank all of the doctors and staff at the hospital for their outstanding work over the pandemic and particularly like to thank the nursing staff, who have worked so tirelessly and bravely to ensure that their patients were well cared for.”

Public to apply for permit for firework display I

f you love firework displays, you will now need to apply for a permit.

This is according to the City of Cape Town saying that in terms of the National Explosives Act and the community fire safety by-law, people wishing to host fireworks displays will be able to apply for a permit to do so.

As was the case in 2019, fireworks displays will only be allowed where a permit has been applied for in terms of the relevant legislation.

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said any event where 200-plus attendees are expected, or that requires any infrastructure build, will also require an events permit from the City.

“The City wishes to reiterate that, while it has, in years gone by, provided designated fireworks sites, there is no obligation to do so and since 2019 has no longer provided designated fireworks sites for Guy Fawkes, Diwali and New Year’s Eve. As we indicated last year, the public will need to apply for a permit for a fireworks display as we no longer provide designated sites. There is growing public sentiment opposing the use of fireworks, and we have also seen a decreased appetite from subcouncils to approve designated sites, Smith said.

He added that the cost of running the sites and making resources available to monitor activities and clean up the aftermath, a picture emerges of why the designated site allocation is not feasible.

“Furthermore, the designated sites have done little to deter the illegal discharge of

fireworks in residential areas, which is an ongoing problem.Unfortunately this was misinterpreted as a ban on fireworks, when it was first implemented, but I would like to remind the public that only national government has the authority to ban fireworks. Firework displays can still be applied for, in terms of the relevant legislation,” Smith explained.

People who would like to apply for a permit to host a firework display need to apply to the police via email at capetown.explosives.cmrd@saps.gov.za.

Smith said the community should contact the head of the City’s fire and life safety section in their application via email at Ignatius.smart@capetown.gov.za.

“If the application is given the go ahead by the police, they then have to make contact with the fire and rescue services, the fire life safety section, in the area where they plan to hold the display so that a site inspection can be carried out to determine whether the site is safe for such a display.

Apart from ensuring that there are no fire hazards in the immediate surroundings, permission also needs to be sought from residents and businesses in the area, and strict conditions have to be adhered to before and during the fireworks display to mitigate any potential risk to public health and safety,” Smith said.

Furthermore, the import and sale of fireworks without the necessary permission outlined in the Explosives Act is illegal, as is the discharge of fireworks in an area not specifically designated for it.

f mathematics are the building blocks of the universe, then art is what gives it form.

Ongoing research in the education sphere has linked the positive influence of the arts on performance of learners in subjects like mathematics, science, technology and engineering, the so-called Stem subjects.

“Therefore an approach combining arts with Stem subjects gave rise to the Steam approach to education, that assumes that art is an integrative element in teaching and learning,” explains Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson of the provincial education department.

In a recent national competition, a project inspired by the Steam approach, schools in

the northern suburbs of Cape Town produced six winners.

The MathArt Competition challenges learners to combine artistic creativity with mathematical problem solving in innovative ways.

Learners in Grades 7 to 12 could enter the Nelson Mandela University’s MathArt Competition, a project of the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre, which is a partner of the provincial education department.

The theme for this year’s competition was “My Universe”.

Stellenberg High School in Bellville had the most learners in the final round.

The school also produced the first and second prize winners: Amè Lambrecht with her work “Perspective” and Nicola Nothnagel with her work “Unlimited” in the Grade 11 and 12 category.

Nadia Heunis of Protea Heights Academy in Brackenfell with her work “Calculated Randomness” was third.

Stellenberg also had two winners in the Grade 10 category, Simon Botha with “My universe is an illusion” in second place and Jemma Fourie with “Proportionally EQUAL” in third place.

Durbanville Children’s Home is presenting its adopt-a-home project to upgrade the various houses in which its children are homed.

The home has 12 house units – each a duplex with the bottom area consisting of a kitchen, living area and store room. The top area consists of four bedrooms and a bathroom.

“Our aim is to create an enriching and stimulating home environment for the children in our care by offering love, emotional support, opportunities and a child friendly environment,” says Melanie Stipp, marketing and campaigns coordinator of Durbanville Children’s Home.

“Our main challenge presently is that we need to upgrade our house units,” she says. According to Stipp research has shown that a child’s early home environment has a long-term effect on development. “The home environment can even affect a child’s brain development. Colour psychology and its impact on a child’s le-

arning abilities and behaviour is a muchresearched subject. Colour psychologists have linked colour with brain development, enhanced productivity and even transition from childhood to adulthood,” she says.

Craft market opens again After almost six months of no income, the crafters of Durbanville Craft Market is back on track and planning an auction at its first pet and craft market since lockdown on Saturday 3 October.

“We are planning a white elephant table where items will be auctioned for as little as R10. We also plan a bric-a-brac table to auction children’s toys.

“Each charity organisation will have a turn to take part and raise some much-needed funds for their organisation,” says Anni Theron, organiser.

The craft market will be held from 09:00 to 14:00 on the grounds of Durbanville Presbyterian Church at 5 Louw Street (behind

the police station, next to the fire brigade) in Durbanville. Only the best handmade crafts will be for sale. The fun auction will start at 11:00. Lucky Lucy Foundation will do micro-chipping at only R100 per pet.

Other charity organisations with stalls are Hope Foundation for Cats, Capetonians against Animal Abuse and Imagine Animal Dreams. Registered charity organisations can join the fundraising project at no charge.

lopesie, ’n mediese toestand wat tot haarverlies lei, is waarskynlik iets waarvan min mense kennis dra.

Tog is Septembermaand die maand waarin hierdie siekte erken word.

Alopesie is ’n outo-immuunsiekte wat die persoon se immuunstelsel verkeerdelik aanval en die haarfollikels dan laat uitval. ’n Groep lyers het onlangs by die Tyger Falls-waterfront byeengekom om die maand te vier, sowel as om stories te deel, en ’n ondersteuningsgroep te begin.

“Min mense is bewus daarvan en min mense weet eintlik wat die toestand behels,” meen Inge Palvie, ’n lyer. Inge is een van die mense by wie op ’n jong ouderdom alopesie gediagnoseer is.

“Ek is op 26-jarige ouderdom gediagnoseer,” sê Inge.

Die toestand het gevorder tot ’n stadium waar sy alle hare op haar kop, arms, bene en wenkbroue verloor het.

“Dit was ’n baie emosionele tyd toe my hare begin uitval en toe ek gediagnoseer is, veral omdat daar geen definitiewe antwoorde is nie, en daar geen kuur vir die toestand bestaan nie.”

“Moenie voel dat dit jou skuld is nie; reik uit na ander lyers vir ondersteuning, want dit is maar moeilik om te aanvaar, en onthou dat jy nie onthou sal word vir die hare op jou kop nie,” sê sy.

Athlete pushes to the extreme NETTALIE VILJOEN

W

hile most of us would consider staying in the plank position for longer than two minutes a test of endu­rance, Jamie Marais sets that bar somewhat higher.

On 30 August, Marais became the only known person in the world to have cycled a vertical ascent of 9 000 metres – the equivalent elevation of Mount Everest (8 845m) – in a big-5 game reserve over 36 hours.

Starting at 06:00 on Saturday 29 August, the adventure athlete pressed on through the night to reach the summit of a gravel circuit 40 times (337 kilometres) by 18:00 the next day. And he did it all for a good cause.

Well, two good causes – to protect endangered wildlife and to feed communities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Durbanville resident says a single phone call made during lockdown set the wheels in motion.

“I remember sitting at home, feeling so frustrated after having read yet another negative post about Covid-19. It got me thinking about my amazing holiday at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape last December and how they must have been affected by the downturn in tourism.”

That’s when Marais called one of the reserve’s game wardens who in turn put him in touch with Lindy Sutherland, the director of the Kariega Foundation.

The non-profit trust, which supports wildlife conservation and community upliftment, is fuelled by a community and conservation levy paid by adult guests visiting Kariega Game Reserve. For five months, the big5 game reserve could not bring in any revenue. This meant that the foundation’s community projects, including an antipoaching unit and community food relief programmes, were in jeopardy.

Sutherland, a Constantia resident, says:

“Raising funds to ensure the safety of our endangered species and keep our neighbours and friends fed has become our priority.”

Putting their heads together, they came up with the idea for the #JamieRides4Rhinos campaign.

Once out there, it quickly garnered the support of an international team of creative people, including cycling commentator Phil Liggett, three-time winner of the Roof of Africa off-road endurance motorbike race Louwrens Mahoney of KTM, Mountain Bike SA magazine editor Paul Ingpen and filmmaker Fergus Clark.

Funds raised during the live social media broadcast of the event clocked in at R400 000.

Marais, who did not sleep a wink for the entire 36 hours, says what kept him going was the support of his family.

“My cousin Paul Marais cycled for 12 hours through the night with me. And each time I reached the summit, my wife, Rouchelle, was there, waiting for me.”

Rouchelle Liedemann, who also happens to be a well-known singer and a popular TV personality on kykNET, had broken her toe just a week or so before the event. Marais says seeing his wife there at 02:00 in the morning, hobbling around with her broken toe while bringing him a cup of tea, really warmed his spirit.

He shares a couple of mantras that he repeats to himself to stay motivated.

“What came to mind 32 hours into the ride was, ‘It is not that hard’. With four hours left to go, I started saying that to myself. The more you say it, the more you believe it.”

Besides the huge change in temperature – blistering heat in the afternoon to freezing cold at night – Marais also had to contend with the threat of colliding with wildlife each time he descended the gravel trail.

“There was a large bull elephant, Charlie, who stopped me right in my tracks when I started. He stayed in the area, wanting to see what was going on. My biggest stress factor was descending at speed because crashing into an elephant is the last thing you want to do.”

Marais, who is the head of corporate sales for an IT and tech company based in Century City by day, began to focus on solo extreme endurance challenges four years ago. Having competed in top-ranked amateur men’s cycling teams throughout his 30s, Marais says the decision to change gears was made in response to him discovering his “why”.

“When I turned 40, I asked myself why I do what I do and why I want to do what I

want to do. I realised my true passion was inspiring people to believe in themselves, to help others realise that nothing is too big to face and to overcome. Each challenge I tackle is a metaphor for what people are facing in life.”

He completed his first major challenge in 2016 when he speed-summitted Table Mountain 22 times in 28 hours over two days to raise funds for the Sabrina Love Foundation which cares for children with special needs.

Since then, Marais has taken on one big project every year.

As to what’s next, Marais says he hasn’t decided yet. “But each challenge is becoming more dangerous and extreme. So let’s see what the future holds,” he adds.

Sibling rivalry a recipe for disaster Sibling rivalry has been around since the second generation of mankind. At least that is what those like myself, who take what is written in the Holy Book as the gospel truth, believe.

The plus side of this kind of feud between families is that those involved strive to become the best version of themselves and make a success of their lives.

Although they would never admit it, mothers secretly encourage the competitive relationships because it builds character.

The problem, however, comes when this rivalry carries on well into the siblings’ adulthood and is no longer cute for the mother to witness.

These are the nightmares that mothers dread wholeheartedly. They dread it because it gets really ugly.

Growing up, I was the youngest of three children. My brother, the middle child was the favourite and my uncle, well his troublesome behaviour always rubbed everyone off the wrong way.

Although he was our uncle, we considered him our brother because there was no huge age gap between him and my brother.

Looking back at those days, I now realise that my once obedient uncle got tired of always having to prove his capabilities.

As for me, I could not care less what the others thought of me. I was too young to compete with teenagers anyway.

While my mother and grandmother tried to call a truce between the two, clearly favouring the middle child, the young me was busy engaging in his daily tolletjie brei activity.

This war between my two older siblings lasted until July last year when my dearest uncle, well in his forties, succumbed to a long illness.

What the rest of my family does not realise though, is that the troublesome oldest sibling never got over the so-called rivalry. To him it was betrayal more than anything, the favour his younger counterpart always had over him.

It killed his confidence, the way he shrunk in the presence of my brother was too obvious to ignore. It was too sad to witness, if you ask me.

One would ask themself who is to blame for this. Did my uncle bring it upon himself or could this have been avoidable from the beginning?

I think the elders are to blame.

Yes their motive for allowing this competitive behaviour was to help the young men build character, but to let it carry on beyond their young adulthood is enough to send the other to an early grave.

To avoid resentment between siblings, parents need to teach their children from an early age to support each other in whatever they do.

Encouraging competition between siblings can only have damaging repercussions that could divide families for many generations.

As the saying goes: “Together we stand, divided we fall.”

Sibling rivalry will make it easier for the enemy to enter into the household and destroy it forever. Once destroyed, picking up the piece will be almost impossible when feelings of resentment, bitterness and anger towards each other are felt.

Wie is vriend, wie is vyand?

Elke dag word statistieke gegee van sterfgevalle van Covid-19 en miljarde rande word bestee om dit hok te slaan.

Maar ek maak die afleiding dat die daaglikse moordsyfer soms meer, soms minder, is as die Covid-19-gevalle en dit wil voorkom of dit eenvoudig aanvaar word.

Gewelddadige misdaad is besig om hand uit te ruk.

Elke dag word babas vermoor en verkrag; vroue word doodgeslaan. Daar is plaasaanvalle, gewelddadige bendegeweld, kinderontvoering en gewapende huisrooftogte. Gewelddadige oproer waarin infrastruktuur beskadig en vernietig word, vind plaas en so gaan die misdaadlys aan.

Jy kan nie eie reg gebruik om jouself te beskerm nie, want die polisie, aldus die Grondwet, is vir ons veiligheid verantwoordelik.

Die polisie is magteloos aangesien die meerderheid van die gemeenskap nie bereid is om betrokke te raak by misdaadbekamping nie, want hulle vertrou nie die polisie nie.

Ek kan dit verstaan, want elke dag lees jy in die media van polisielede wat aangekeer word vir ernstige misdade – hetsy aan diens of van diens, asook lede wat steeds in diens is met opgeskorte vonnisse vir ernstige misdade. Die ergste van alles is dat hierdie misdadigers tot op senior vlak voorkom.

Die minister van polisie, Bheki Cele, was destyds die polisiekommissaris en is onder ’n donker wolk uit die polisie geskors en later weer aangestel as die minister van polisie.

My beskeie mening is dat hy geensins ’n idee het wat van hom verwag word nie behalwe om arrogant te wees en die volk te dreig dat hy hulle sal toesluit vir geringe oortredings soos die oortreding van Covid-19-regulasies.

Wanneer gaan die regering wakker skrik en besef dat die meerderheid van ons polisie onbekwaam is – van voetsoolvlak tot senior bestuur, die minister ingesluit, en dit gaan nie net die volk benadeel nie ... buitelandse toeriste gaan nie hul lewe waag om ons land te besoek nie.

Ek is bevrees dit staan soos ’n paal bo water dat vigilante optrede ons voorland gaan wees.

Waar is ons munisipaliteit en owerhede?

Nêrens in Brackenfell kan jy vandag rondry en die sypaadjies miskyk nie.

Die onkruid staan in sommige strate meer as ’n meter hoog.

Ek het al hoeveel keer Stad Kaapstad gekontak en versoeke gerig op die Stad Kaapstadapplikasie, maar niks het nog gebeur nie.

Op die hoek van Kruis- en Brackenstraat het ’n waterpyp gebars en die munisipaliteit was daar om dit te herstel, maar die sypaadjie is net so gelos. Die grond is nie gelyk gemaak nie.

As jy in Kruisstraat van die verkeersdepartement af ry na die stasie toe, sien jy aan albei kante van die sypaadjie hoe hoog die onkruid staan.

Jakaranda-parkie is vuil en op die terrein aan die oorkant waar die ou Voortrekkersaaltjie staan, is die onkruid net so hoog. Daar slaap ’n man in ’n tent op hierdie terrein en

wetstoepassing doen niks daaraan nie.

Die stasie is vuil en onwettige straatverkopers (straatmense) verkoop hul gesteelde artikels daar.

Kyk hoe lyk die terrein langs KFC in Ruwari.

En as jy al hierdie dinge aanmeld, dan sê die persoon aan die ander kant net hulle sal vir jou ’n SMS stuur.

We have been complaining about rabbits but neighbours are feeding the rabbits arround the park. Currently, we cannot utilise our park or walk our dogs properly. Dogs are going crazy at night when rabbits are about.

Ek en sewe ander sit op die stoep van die munisipale kantore vir die een teller om ons te help. Ek is tweede in die ry, maar dit neem 45 minute.

Toe sien ons ’n tipiese voorbeeld van personeelgebruik.

Oorkant ons is ’n munisipale werker besig om die parkeerplek skoon te vee met ’n besem op wiele.

Van die besems is opgetel (vir minder weerstand). Hy het handskoene aan (vir eelte) en is besig met sy selfoon vir oproepe en musiek (multi-tasking).

Vandat ons begin tel het, het hy 25 keer dieselfde 10 x 3m stukkie parkeergebied “gevee”.

Heen-en-weer, heen-en-weer.

Toe ek daar wegry, was hy nog nie klaar nie en dieselfde blare het op dieselfde plek gelê as toe ek gekom het!

Dit was in die oggend en sy skof was seker tot namiddag ... en dan kom môre.

Alles het reg voor belastingbetalers plaasgevind en ons moet daarvoor opdok.

Dis skrikwekkend hoe geld gemors word.

Volgende jaar met die verkiesing moet ons hulle weer ondersteun.

Prioriteitslys 1 tot 4: beter salarisse, meer werkers, hoër tariewe, groter skuld en eers by nommer 27, produktiwiteit!

SOFTBALL: LOCAL SEASON STILL OFF THE CARDS

T

he 2020/2021 local softball season, run by the Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA), will not go ahead.

The softball season usually runs from October to March every year.

The previous season only managed to finish a matter of days before the lockdown was officially implemented.

The pandemic had a major effect on the sport locally, which has five women and three men’s leagues with many youth teams. Nationally, events such as the National Provincial Championships, normally held in March, was also cancelled.

However, the government stance regarding softball as a non-contact sport has baffled players and administrators alike – who have the collective thought, saying, “there’s nothing soft about it”.

The dust will stand thick when players clash at a base. Contact between opposing players is inevitable.

The majority of clubs supported the Cape Town Softball Association’s (CTSA) executive committee in their proposal not to play the 2020/2021 season.

The CTSA will, however, review the status of the pandemic at the end of November for a possible start in January 2021, albeit a shortened competition season.

The cost to ensure that the playing venues are compliant in terms of regulatory requirements is exorbitant, but CTSA chairperson Hayley Carolus says health and safety is of paramount importance.

“We are responsible and held accountable for their safety and their loved ones at home. It was by no

means easy to propose the ‘no play’ (decision). We are all eager to return back to the field of play to continue enjoying this beautiful game we all love so dearly.

“However, this is no normal season we are living in, and we are heading into an uncertain future.

We are living in extraordinary times and I hope times that we will never experience in our lifetime again,” she said.

“By moving to alert level 1, we have to be extremely cautious and keep practising social distancing, washing of hands regularly, wearing a mask, as we are now more

vulnerable than ever, with limited borders and airports opening up. I would rather want our softball fraternity to be safe, healthy and living than to return to the field of play too soon and be at risk of any danger,” Carolus added.

Nazeem Dulvie, veteran coach of current Super League champions, Westridge Yankees Softball Club, echoed the sentiment, questioning the government’s view that the sport is a non-contact sport.

“Surely the ones who are categorising the code as non-contact has not watched this beautiful game being played at an elite level.

“Pick-off plays on bases are exciting and contact is inevitable.

Not to mention those close plays at home plate when players collide as well as ‘run-downs’,” he says.

Dulvie adds that the pandemic has had a major impact on preparations, especially considering the closure of facilities for most of the lockdown period, while limited resources exacerbate the safe return to action.

“Not all players can afford their own equipment, and this has added to the lack of proper preparations.

We need to look at the holistic wellbeing of our athletes and the effects

possible Covid-19 infections can have on them physically, emotionally and financially. Even though we might have younger ‘low risk’ athletes competing, these athletes go home where they might live with ‘high-risk individuals’.

“Also considering that our more experienced technical staff are older and at a higher risk than the players. This sport has stood the test of time and will be there way after the Covid-19 pandemic has been surpassed.

“It is time to take caution and protect our players, technical and their families,” Dulvie concluded.

There will be no action at Turfhall Softball Stadium, the home of the Cape Town Softball Association, following a “no play” decision.
